HAMPTON - Kirby Dian Miller, 65, of Hampton died at her home Tuesday, April 27, 2004. Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 4, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Hampton with Rev. Joe Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, May 3, from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

Kirby was born Dec. 8, 1938, in Mason City to Clarence and Irene (Davis) Gaiser. She graduated from Rockford High School. On July 7, 1957, Kirby was united in marriage to Dean Miller at Rockford. She was employed by the Hampton Health Care Center as a CNA for 35 years. Kirby was a member of the First Christian Church at Hampton. She enjoyed gardening, canning and cooking.

Survivors include her husband, Dean, of Hampton; one son, Michael Miller and wife Ruth of Alexandria, Va.; and one daughter, Michelle Hand and husband Douglas of Solon; one brother, Kelvin Gaiser and wife Pam of Tucson, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

IOWA FALLS - Arthur T. Hill, 89, of Iowa Falls died Monday, April 26, 2004, at Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls. Funeral services were Friday, April 30, at Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls with Rev. Don Preston officiating. Burial was in the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls.

Arthur was born Dec. 2, 1914, at Dows to Clarence and Mildred (Bates) Hill. He graduated from Dows High School in 1933. On May 21, 1939, Arthur was united in marriage to Ilene Martin. He was a lifelong farmer. Arthur enjoyed football and school plays. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls.

Survivors include his wife, Ilene, of Iowa Falls; three daughters, Janice Gregory and husband Dr. Richard of Vermillion, S.D., Judy Duckett and husband Ronald of Randalia, and Janet Kaufman and husband Larry of Ankeny; two sons, Steven Hill of Geneva and Stan Hill of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lavonne Morris of Albert Lea, Minn., and Evelyn Boyington of State Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Veva White, Mildred Pepper and Edith Fitz; and four brothers, Laurence, Aubrey, Laurel and Clair Hill.

Harley H. Brightwell

DES MOINES - Harley H. Brightwell, 90, of Des Moines died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, of a heart ailment. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 1, at 2 p.m., at Southtown Funeral Home in Des Moines with burial at the Sunset Cemetery.

Harley was born Nov. 20, 1913, at Knox County, Mo., to LeRoy and Lela May (Whiteaker) Brightwell. He worked for The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company's Store in Iowa Falls. On Nov. 21, 1937, Harley was united in marriage to Gail Lake at Bethany, Mo. The couple lived primarily in Des Moines. He was employed by A & P Grocery as manager, retiring in 1974. Harley was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Des Moines.

Survivors include one son, David Brightwell and wife Linda of Des Moines; four daughters, Barbara Mitchell and husband Larry of Urbandale, Marilyn Finney and husband Larry of Lead, S.D., Susan Marquis and husband Dan of Berrien Springs, Mich., and Karen Hubbart and husband Rick of Denver, Colo.; 13 grandchildren, including Stacey Anderson and husband Jody of Iowa Falls; 16 great-grandchildren, including Jacob and Jared Anderson of Iowa Falls; and three sisters-in-law, Letha Hanson and Herbie Lake, both of Hubbard, and Arleta Evans of Dows.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Gail.

Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association.

DUMONT - Alice Siems, 94, of Dumont died Saturday, May 1, 2004, at the Dumont Care Center in Dumont. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 5, at the Dumont Reformed Church with Rev. Bob Scholten officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery.

Alice was born July 18, 1909, in Hardin County to Wubbo and Hilda (Bakker) Viet. She attended rural country schools. On Dec. 22, 1930, Alice was united in marriage to Dick Siems at Dumont. She was a homemaker and enjoyed embroidering, making quilts, gardening and afternoon tea time.

Survivors include one son, Verlon Siems and wife Shirley of Hampton; a daughter-in-law, Janet Siems of Hampton; three sisters, Grace DeVries, Jen Gronewold and Tillie Hicken, all of Dumont; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Dareld, four brothers and one sister.

Grace Modderman

ALEXANDER - Grace K. Modderman, 100, of Alexander died Saturday, May 1, 2004, at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 5, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Reformed Church in Alexander with Rev. Phillip Arnold officiating. Burial will be in the Alexander Cemetery.

Grace was born Dec. 7, 1903, at Alexander to Dirk and Yettie (Pals) Dirksen. She was raised in the Alexander area, graduating from the Alexander Consolidated Schools. On Feb. 19, 1929, Grace was united in marriage to Eilert Modderman at Alexander. The couple farmed in the area until retirement. In 1981, she moved to Alexander to care for her mother, remaining there until 1998, at which time she entered the Belmond Care Center. Grace was a member of the First Reformed Church for 84 years, where she taught Sunday school, was involved in the Women's groups and was a RCW member for over 50 years. She was a member of the Alexander Cemetery Society and the CAL over 60s organization.

Survivors include one sister, Jennie DeWaard of Kanawha, and two brothers, Louis Dirksen of New Hampton and Dirk Dirksen and wife Grace of Alexander. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eilert; one brother, Jelto Dirksen; and one sister, Clara Lauritzen.

Roger Reed

URBANDALE - Roger Henry Reed, 63, of Urbandale, formerly of Steamboat Rock, died Thursday, April 29, 2004, at the Kavanagh Hospice House in Urbandale. Funeral services were Monday, May 3, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Urbandale with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.

Roger was born Aug. 31, 1940, in Hamilton County to Ralph H. and Arlene H. (Thompson) Reed. He graduated from Steamboat Rock High School and attended Wartburg College. On June 15, 1963, Roger was united in marriage to June A. Keiper. He worked for Gibbs/Cook Caterpillar and established Des Moines Construction Parts and Equipment in 1983. Roger was a member and past president of the Independent Dealers Association, a member of the Iowa Ostrich Association, Iowa Land Improvement Association and had served as coach for the West Des Moines Girls' Softball League. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, fishing and attending auto races.

Survivors include his wife, June; two daughters, Carla Chambers and husband Todd of Ankeny and Krista Oehlerich and husband Dwight of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren; his parents; three brothers, Kenneth and wife Linda of Ackley, Leslie and wife Renee of Galt, Mo., and Douglas and wife Treva of Spanish Fork, Utah; two sisters, Pamela Berends and husband Edwin of Conrad and Denise Matlage and husband Ed of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be directed to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, the Kavanagh House on 56th, or an education fund for his grandchildren.

Etta Fink

PARKERSBURG - Etta Clara Fink, 84, of Parkersburg died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls. Funeral services were Saturday, May 1, at Calvary Baptist Church in Parkersburg with Rev. Anthony Bradseth officiating.

Etta was born March 11, 1920, in Grundy County near Dike to Sam and Effie (Reiter) Hayes. She graduated from Grundy Center High School and attended college at Iowa State Teachers' College. On Feb. 23, 1945, Etta was united in marriage to Vernett Fink at Parkersburg. The couple farmed near Parkersburg. Etta taught school in Grundy County for eight years and gave piano and accordion lessons. She was a lifetime member of Calvary Baptist Church. Etta enjoyed needlework, quilting, doing jigsaw puzzles and reading. Compiling a book of her family tree and passing the needlework art on to her granddaughters were among her accomplishments.

Survivors include her husband, Vernett Fink of Parkersburg; one son, Verlyn Fink and wife Betty of Parkersburg; three grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Mildred Hayes of Dike.

Lawrence Cutler

NEW PROVIDENCE - Lawrence E. "Ted" Cutler, 89, of New Providence died at his home Saturday, May 1, 2004. Funeral services were Tuesday, May 4, at the Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church with Rev. Arlen Daleske officiating, Burial was at the Honey Creek Cemetery.

Ted was born April 2, 1915, in Sterling, Kan., to Lawrence and May (Cartmell) Cutler. He was raised and educated in New Providence where he graduated from high school in 1934. In 1938, Ted was united in marriage to Vera Hadley at her parents' home in New Providence. They farmed in the Union and New Providence communities for 42 years. Ted retired from farming in 1979, but continued living on the family farm. Watching the wildlife and observing sporting events were among Ted's favorite activities. He was a member of the Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church, a board member of the original South Hardin/Union Telephone Company, a former township trustee, 4-H leader and an active conservationist.

Survivors include his wife Vera of New Providence; a son Jay Cutler and wife Karen of Charles City; a daughter Linda Widmer and husband Ted of Mount Pleasant; daughter-in-law Becke (Cutler) Arnold and husband Gary of Oskaloosa; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Steven; and brother Jack.

Memorials may be directed to the Iowa River Hospice and the Honey Creek Church Preservation Group.

C. Lucille Nelson

WEBSTER CITY - Charlotte Lucille Nelson, 74, of Webster City died Thursday, April 29, 2004, at the Hamilton County Hospital in Webster City. Funeral services were Monday, May 3, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe with Pastor Dan Hart and Pastor John Grebner officiating. Burial was at Bethany Lutheran Cemetery, rural Radcliffe.

Lucille was born on Aug. 26, 1929, in Randall, the daughter of Ingoff Nelson, and daughter and stepdaughter of Beatrice and Ole D. Reisetter. She attended schools in Hamilton County. Lucille lived 25 years on the Ole D. Reisetter farm until 1960. She later moved to Webster City, where she provided adult care for elderly residents. Lucille met all of her obstacles with great determination. She was an avid reader of the Bible, poetry and stories. Lucille enjoyed all people and animals and cherished her family and friends.

Survivors include her five brothers, Luther Nelson of Des Moines, David Nelson of Redding, Calif., Marion Reisetter of Iron Ridge, Wis., Dick Nelson of Devil's Tower, Wyo., and Larry Nelson of Spirit Lake; two sisters, Oliva Wright of Grinnell and Doris Peterson of Jewell; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bervin Nelson and Lyle Nelson; one niece; and two nephews.

Harley was born Aug. 1, 1925, to Oldie and Mary (Huesman) Janssen. He attended Aplington High School. On March 10, 1950, Harley was united in marriage to Julia Kuperus at Austinville. The couple farmed in the Ackley area.

Survivors include his wife, Julia of Ackley; one daughter, Mary Jo Louters and husband Larry of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two sons, Hollis and wife Ardelle of Ackley and Harlyn and wife Charlane of Hampton; five grandchildren, Lauren, Jeremy and Julienne Louters, Harley P. Janssen and wife Jessica and Michael Janssen; step-grandchildren, Mike and Doug Pralle; one great-granddaughter, Jayna Janssen; two sisters, Anna Yorke and husband Roy of Cameron Park, Calif., and Mildred VanHove and husband Ben of Hampton; two brothers, Alfred and wife Kathy of Waverly and Dale and wife Lynda of Ackley; and many nephews and nieces.

ACKLEY - Annie Jansen Buskohl, 102, of Ackley died Saturday, May 8, 2004, at Presbyterian Village in Ackley. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 12, at 10:30 a.m. at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center with Rev. Kent Leydens and Rev. Bruce Baillie officiating. Burial will be in Colfax Center Presbyterian Cemetery in Colfax.

Annie was born March 3, 1902, in Parkersburg to Johannes J. and Gertie (Jansen) Meester. She received her education in the Pleasant Valley No. 6 country school of rural Parkersburg. On Oct. 10, 1940, Annie was united in marriage to Heye Buskohl. She was a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting and embroidering. Annie was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include three sisters, Trena Schnell and Lydia Kolder of Parkersburg, and Ruth Claassen and husband Clarence of Grundy Center; one sister-in-law, Lena Meester of Parkersburg; one brother-in-law, Jacobus Hemmen of Aplington; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Jacob and Herman; and four sisters, Jacobena Wolters, Henrietta Luhring, Martha Eilderts and Esther Hemmen.

Fredrick Balvanz

FALLBROOK, Calif. - Fredrick "Fred" E. Balvanz, 95, of Fallbrook, Calif., died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at the Emerald Garden Health Facility in Fallbrook. A memorial service will be held in Fallbrook. Internment will be at a later date in the Alden Cemetery.

Fred was born June 6, 1908, to William and Hermina Balvanz in Eldora. He attended school in the Eldora area. While living in Iowa, Fred was a carpenter, farmer and builder of many houses in Shell Rock. On May 7, 1952, he was united in marriage to Betty Lyon. The couple moved to the National City/Chula Vista, Calif., area where he was a carpenter for Rohr Aircraft Industries until his retirement in 1973. He was active in the Imperial Beach and Park Hill United Methodist churches and shared his woodworking talent for sanctuary furnishings at the Santee United Methodist and the Park Hill United Methodist churches. For several years, he was a volunteer driver for the Scripps Memorial Hospital in Chula Vista.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews, including Sylvia Ginoza and husband Dennis of Fallbrook, Joyce Schager and husband Robert of Iowa Falls and Bonnye Ryan and husband James of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Darwin (Skip); his parents; one brother, Otto; and two sisters, Agnes Steinfeldt and Anna Steinfeldt.

J. Verald Brown

HAMPTON - J. Verald Brown, 90, of Hampton died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton. Funeral services will be Friday, May 21, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Hampton with Rev. Jerry Miller officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, May 20, from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

Verald was born March 25, 1914, in Hampton to James and Esther (Wolf) Brown. He was raised in Hampton and graduated from Hampton High School in 1933. Verald attended Iowa State University and received his BS degree in dairy husbandry. On May 27, 1939, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Berger at Sioux City. Verald was a farmer and a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis, of Hampton; two sons, J. Kent and Charles and wife Barb, both of Hampton; two daughters, Janet Brown of Humboldt and Marilyn Hopkey and husband Ed of Storm Lake; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Wayne; one sister, Lois; and a daughter-in-law, Janet.

Edward Humburg

HAMPTON - Edward J. Humburg, 83, of Hampton died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton. Funeral services were Tuesday, May 18, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton with Rev. Kent Mechler officiating. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield.

Edward was born July 5, 1920, in Sheffield to Henry and Ida (Schafer) Humburg. He attended rural Franklin County schools. Edward served in the U.S. Army during WWII, earning five Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. On April 19, 1946, Edward was united in marriage to Beulah Kappen at Iowa Falls. He was a farmer for most of his life and in his later years, was a farm manager for George Stock in Sheffield. Edward was a member of Zion St. John's Lutheran Church in Sheffield. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren and attending their sporting events.

Survivors include one daughter, Susan Eisentrager and husband Duane of Hampton; one daughter-in-law, Sally (Sarah) Humburg of Mason City; two grandsons, Michael Eisentrager of Hampton and Anthony Humburg of Mason City; one sister, Esther Humburg of Sheffield; one brother-in-law, Kenny Kappen and wife Viola of Sheffield.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son, Roger; four brothers; and four sisters.

Dorothy Sellers Nolting

MARSHALLTOWN - Dorothy K. (Claassen) Sellers Nolting, 87, of Marshalltown died Thursday, May 13, 2004, at Fountain West Health Center in West Des Moines. Private family graveside services will be held Wednesday, May 19, at the Eldora City Cemetery in Eldora with Pastor Harrison Lippert officiating. Public visitation will be Wednesday, May 19, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, where the family will be present to greet friends.

Dorothy was born Sept. 11, 1916, to Henry and Beulah (Strickler) Claassen in Eldora. She graduated from Eldora High School in 1934. After graduation, Dorothy went to work for Potgeiter Feed and Grain in Eldora, working as a bookkeeper. In 1937, she was united in marriage to Victor E. Sellers in Eldora. They lived in Eldora for a short time and also in Illinois. In 1942, they moved to Marshalltown. In 1956, her husband Victor died, and Dorothy continued to make Marshalltown her home. She was married to Roland Nolting at Marshalltown in 1969. Dorothy worked for the Girl Scouts and Arbie Feeds until her retirement in 1981. Her husband Roland died in 1978. In 1997, Dorothy moved to Des Moines, living there for the remainder of her life. She had been a 55-year active member of the First Baptist Church in Marshalltown.

Survivors include one son, Victor Sellers and wife Jo Ann of Des Moines; two granddaughters, Kimberly Sellers of San Francisco, Calif., and Kara Gorsuch and husband Christopher of Windsor, Colo.; and two great-grandchildren, Cooper and Kurtis Gorsuch.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, Victor; and her second husband, Roland.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the First Baptist Church in Steamboat Rock.

Anna Siems

ACKLEY - Anna Elizabeth Siems, 80, of Ackley died Friday, May 14, 2004, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Funeral services were Monday, May 17, at the First Presbyterian Church in Ackley with Pastor John Butler officiating. Burial will be in the Steamboat Rock Cemetery.

Anna was born Jan. 16, 1924, in Eldora to Ed and Minnie (Polley) Luiken. She graduated from the Eldora High School. On Aug. 13, 1945, she was united in marriage to John Siems at the Washington Reformed Parsonage. She taught country school near Steamboat Rock. Anna was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ackley and the Ladies Aid.

Survivors include two sons, Stanley Siems and wife Connie of Ackley and Edwin Siems and wife Teresa Vokoun of Marshalltown; two daughters, Joyce Harken and husband Phil of Phoenix, Ariz., and Janet Catron and husband Wayne of Owensboro, Ky; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one sister Edna Kruse of Eldora.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Lyle and Charles Luiken.

Sietsema Funeral Home of Ackley was in charge of arrangements.

Lena Swieter

HAMPTON - Lena Swieter, 93, of Iowa Falls, formerly of Hampton, died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 19, at 1:30 a.m. at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton with John Lyman officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter's UCC Church Cemetery, rural Geneva.

Lena was born June 14, 1910, in Franklin County to George and Ella (Meyer) Meyer. She attended rural Butler County schools. On Jan. 8, 1935, Lena was united in marriage to Donald Swieter at Steamboat Rock. She was a homemaker and worked part-time in area restaurants. Lena was a member of Bible Truth Hall in Bradford. She enjoyed cooking and gardening.

Survivors include three sons, LaVerne and wife Betty of Geneva, Walter and wife Caroline of Brighton, Colo., and Clarence and wife Bonnie of Dumont; two sisters, Minnie Meyer of St. Paul, Minn., and Pearl Nielson of Michigan; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Larry; five brothers; and three sisters.

Dena Nederhoff

WELLSBURG - Dena Nederhoff, 91, of Wellsburg died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center. Funeral services were Tuesday, May 18, at the Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg with Pastor Todd Rempe officiating. Burial followed at Rose Hill cemetery in Grundy Center.

Dena was born June 14, 1912, to John and Gepka (Behrends) Niehaus in Grundy Center. On Dec. 21, 1938, she was united in marriage to Gratus Nederhoff at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple settled on a farm in rural Conrad, moving later to a farm in rural Wellsburg. In 1978, they moved to Wellsburg.

Survivors include one son, Don and wife Faye of Ackley; three daughters, Joan Winger of Wellsburg, Harriet Off and husband Harley of Iowa Falls and Donna Kramer and husband Kelly of Aplington; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Beverly Roberts; six sisters, Mary Veld, Jo Harris, Dehlia Krull, Minnie Miller, Annie Nederhoff and one sister in infancy; and two brothers, Cap and John Niehaus.

Doyen-Abels Funeral Home of Wellsburg was in charge of arrangements.
