Mary, 96, descendant of one of the oldest pioneer families in Howard County, died at her home Thursday, October 12, 2006 after a brief illness.

Born on March 20, 1910, Mary's parents were Dora Carver Swenson and the inventor (and manufacturer) John Stephen Swenson, famous in the Cresco area and even nationally for the brilliance and usefulness of some of his many inventions. Young Mary graduated from Cresco Public High School in 1928, four years after the premature death of her father (he was only 51) from a cerebral hemorrhage in 1924. After graduation, Mary and her mother Dora lived in California for the summer, after which Mary entered Grinnell College, and two years later Carleton College, from which she graduated in 1932, with a double major in   English and in Art. During the year 1934, Mary enrolled at the Chouinard School of Art in Los Angeles, developing her distinctive talent in pen and charcoal drawings. With her mother, she traveled broadly, to both coasts and by sea to Cuba and the Panama Canal.

On January 1, 1936, she married George Raphael Laub, also of Cresco, and they had three children, only two of whom survived early infancy, Karen and Gretchen. Both Mary and George were gifted with strong artistic talents. Both loved to sketch the oldest and most distinctive buildings in Cresco and elsewhere. Mary eventually opened “The Little Gallery” on Elm Street, which sold prints, drawings, note cards (featuring scenes of Cresco) and other objects of art for many years. Both Mary and George loved to travel, and visited Mexico, Hawaii, Panama, Italy, France, Germany and many other countries overseas. In addition to her drawing and sketching, Mary loved playing golf, and also cooking huge holiday meals for her family. She could set a groaning table like nobody else.

Mary Laub's grandparents were Mary Fall Carver and Chester M. Carver, who came by covered wagon from Stockbridge, Massachusetts, to Vernon Springs in 1859. The Carvers were descendants of the brother of John Carver, who came to Massachusetts on the Mayflower. Their ancestor settled first near Plymouth Bay, having arrived by ship after the Mayflower.

With her husband George, Mary Laub was very active all her life in projects for the betterment of Cresco - from the Arts Festival, the Country Club, and the Howard County Historical Society, to the Cresco Industrial Development Corporation; and from the Howard County Fair, the Campfire Girls and the 4-H, to the Federated Women's Club and the Red Cross. She was also for a time on the Board of Trustees of Upper Iowa University.

Long suffering from an illness that confined her to a mobile chair for more than forty years, Mary was a conspicuous example of bravery and good spirit - when wheeling rapidly around a room, she could be a real menace to unsuspecting children (and adults). When Mary laughed, it was a good strong laugh, and contagious. Like her daughters and son-in-law, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren loved her very much.

Mary is survived by two daughters, Karen Laub-Novak of Washington, D.C., and Gretchen Laub of Cresco; and six grandchildren; Richard Novak, Tanya Holton, and Jana Novak; Lucy Gehling, Tanya and George Laub; six great-grandchildren: Emily and Stephen Novak of Des Moines, Kurtis and Samantha Gehling of Decorah, and the daughters of Randall and Tanya Holton of Boston.

She is preceded in death by an infant son within hours of his birth; by her husband George; and by her grand-daughter Sarah.
