Marie E. Brannon, 96, of San Diego, CA, died October 13, 2005 in San Diego, CA.

Dee Ann (Martens) Byrne

Junction City, KS — Dee Ann (Martens) Byrne, age 37 of Junction City, KS, formerly of New Hampton, died Sunday, June 25, 2006, at her home.

Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 8 at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton.

Friends may greet the family from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Dee Ann was born on July 28, 1968, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, the daughter of Harlan and Darlene (Springer) Martens. She attended New Hampton Schools. On April 12, 1986, she married Jerry J. Byrne, Charles City. To this union two daughters were born.

The wife of a military man allowed Dee Ann to see much of the country while raising their two daughters. She especially enjoyed living by the ocean. Dee Ann was a loving mother and always made time to volunteer at their children's schools. She also had three Yorkshire Terriers who brought her great joy.

Survivors include her husband Jerry of Junction City, KS; two daughters, Nichole Byrne, Lawler and Pamela Byrne, Junction City, KS; her mother, Darlene Martens, New Hampton; one sister, Deb (Joe) Zubrod, Lawler; and one grandson, Taylor J.J. Byrne, Lawler. Preceding her in death was her father Harlan in 1991.


Arnold "Arnie" Henn

Arnold "Arnie" Henn, age 71 of New Hampton, died Thursday, June 29, 2006, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

Alta Vista — Paul V. Hentges, 79, of Alta Vista, died Tuesday, June 27, 2006 at the Colonial Manor in Elma.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 1 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista with Reverend Ray Atwood, Reverend Robert J. Ament, and Reverend John Harpel concelebrating the mass. Jane Karels will be the organist and will accompany the St. Bernard Men’s Choir and the North Washington Men’s Choir singing “Be Not Afraid,” “On Eagles Wings,” “Just a Closer Walk with Thee,” “It’s Not The First Mile,” and “How Great Thou Art.” Lectors for the service will be Leo Pospichal and Kathy Hentges. Gregg, Laurie, Hannah and Justin Schierl will present the offertory gifts and the pall will be placed by Paul’s wife and children. Mass servers will be Calvan and Anne Lucum.

Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista with Ronald Newsum, James Hentges, Jack Hentges, Joe Pospichal, Peter Hentges, and Robert Savre serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers will be Dan Frudden, Joe McAvoy, Phyllis Meyer, O.J. Tomson, Terry Anderson, and Colin Robinson. Friends may call from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma where there will be a 5:00 p.m. combined Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters Rosary and a 7:00 p.m. Scripture service. Visitation will also be an hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or Tri-County Citizens for Life.

Paul Hentges was born July 25, 1926 at Alta Vista, the son of Peter and Susan (Lentz) Hentges. He attended St. William’s High School and in 1943 had the distinction of being the only graduate in his class. Paul went on to further his education, receiving his degree in banking from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He worked his whole life at the Alta Vista State Bank, now First Citizens, from 1943 until 1988, except for a year and a half from 1949 to 1950 when he was the acting Postmaster in Alta Vista. He worked at the Alta Vista State Bank going from janitor to bookkeeper to President and Chairman of the Board. Paul has always been active in community and civic affairs.

Paul was united in marriage to Wilburta DeBoer Roegner on September 2, 1989 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista. Paul and Burta resided in the original Peter Hentges home until March 15, 1993, when they moved to their new home in Alta Vista.

He was a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Davis Assembly, Knights of Columbus Council 4144 in Elma, and a 50-year member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, St. Joseph Court, Elma, IA. Survivors include his wife Wilburta, Alta Vista; children Barbara (Dr. Kevin) Parsons, Appleton, WI, Donald (Lynn) Roegner, Appleton, WI, Laurie (Gregg) Schierl, Appleton, WI, Kathy Bruns, Appleton, WI, and Tom and Mary Gloede, Appleton, WI; six grandchildren Anne Parsons, Emily Parsons, Hannah Schierl, Justin Schierl, Daniel Burdick, Beth (Brian) Robinson; one brother, Clem (Lillian) Hentges, Ft Dodge, IA; two sisters, Maxine Neuhauser, California and Mary Lou (Gerald) Pospichal, Riceville; a sister-in-law, Mercedes Hentges, Mason City; two brothers-in-law, Mark (Edie) DeBoer, Aplington, IA and Gary (Marie) DeBoer, Oklahoma; special Godchildren, James Hentges, Mason City, Linda Wilkinson, Cedar Rapids, Paul Druce, California, and Lisa Barnes, North Carolina; special friends, Frank and Joan Marcatante, Alta Vista and Kevin and Julie Palmbach, Appleton, WI.

Merle E. Moeller

Merle E. Moeller, age 80 of Waucoma, died Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 1, 2006, at the Waucoma American Legion Post, Waucoma, with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating.

Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Waucoma. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Waucoma American Legion Post.

Lola Virginia Marks Price

Lola Virginia Marks Price, age 98 passed away on June 25, 2006

Alexandria, va — Lola Virginia Marks Price, 98, passed away on June 25, 2006, after a brief illness at the Mount Vernon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Alexandria, VA. Mrs. Price was born March 10, 1908 in Winchester, MO.

Graveside Services for family and close friends will be held on Saturday, July 8, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a noon reception at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Price Wildlife Habitat.

After a courtship of dancing, Lola married Robert Voorhees Price on April 1, 1928 and their marriage continued for almost 74 years. They first lived in Centerville, and later resided in Des Moines, Oelwein and Sumner before making New Hampton their home. Bob became a partner in the Blue Line Oil Company, retiring after 24 years in 1971.

In addition to their love of dancing, Mr. and Mrs. Price were active community volunteers and contributors, and together enjoyed many mutual interests; playing bridge, hunting, nature and the outdoors, boating and relaxing on the Mississippi River.

In 1962, their four grandchildren, aged from 5-13, came to live with them and were raised and educated by Bob and Lola. Mrs. Price took great pride in being a good homemaker to her family, and a gracious hostess to their many friends. During World War II she volunteered with the American National Red Cross. Mrs. Price was a member of First United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, and Loafers.

Mr. and Mrs. Price lived together on their own, caring for one another until he passed away in 2002, at the age of 99. In 2003, she was diagnosed with dementia and moved to Alexandria, Virginia to live with her granddaughter Joni, and her family. Then in 2004, she moved to the Mount Vernon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she was known for her friendly disposition and sense of humor, calling everyone honey and sharing her kisses.



Over Memorial Day weekend this year, Mrs. Price attended the wedding of her first great granddaughter, Jaime Price Koons Preston, and was joined by her family members from across the country.

Survivors include one daughter, Suzanne Brownell, New Hampton; two grandsons, Jeffrey Johnson, Cedar Rapids, and Jay Johnson, Jasper, GA; two granddaughters, Joni Koons, Alexandria, VA, and Jennifer Bahner, Folsom, CA; great-grandchildren Jaime Preston, Centreville, VA, Lindsay Koons, Alexandria, VA, Stacy Bahner, Folsom, CA, Joshua Johnson and Jordan Johnson, Jasper, GA, Joshua Matthess, Ben Matthess and Dylan Drahos, Cedar Rapids; great-great-grandchildren Garrett and Evan Matthess and Blake Drahos.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Bob; a granddaughter, Joy Johnson; one brother, and two sisters.


Matthew Noah Vsetecka

Matthew Noah Vsetecka, son of Michael and Donna Vsetecka of Ft. Atkinson, was stillborn Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI.

Private family services will be held at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Protivin.

Survived by his parents; one brother, Jackson Vsetecka, Ft. Atkinson; maternal grandparents, Mike and Theresa Lensing, Protivin; paternal grandparents, Leon and Barb Vsetecka, Ft. Atkinson; maternal great-grandparents, Don and Norma Lensing, Protivin; paternal great-grandparents, Roman and Therese Schmitt, Ft. Atkinson and Phyllis Vsetecka of Lawler.

Wilma Caffrey

Wilma Caffrey, 78, died Thursday, June 29, 2006


  Funeral services for Wilma "Gran" L. Caffrey of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 3 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Wilma, 78, died Thursday, June 29, 2006 in her home following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Wilma was born on August 10, 1927 in Cresco, IA the daughter of Charles and Linnie (Blaser) Schultz.

On December 29, 1947 she married Leo Caffrey in Protivin, IA. They farmed southwest of Cresco until 1988 when they retired and moved to town.

She enjoyed playing cards and spending time with family and friends. She especially enjoyed being with her grandchildren. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Mary Circle, Senior Citizen Card Club, and V.I.P. Club.
 
 

She is survived by her seven children: Kathy (Ken) Abrams of Champaign, IL, John (Pat) of Oakton, VA, Linda (Bruce) Moudry of Evansdale, IA, Gerry (Cherri) of Cresco, IA, Bill (Peg) of Cresco, IA, Deb Caffrey of Springfield, IL, and Mike (LaVonne Gjere) of Cresco, IA; and 11 grandchildren: Barb Abrams, Jennifer and Kevin Caffrey, Todd (Stef) and Nick Moudry, Danny (fiancee Jaime), and Becky Caffrey, Andy Rink and Amanda Caffrey and Alex and Madison Caffrey.

Wilma was preceded in death by her husband in 1993; her parents; brother: Wayne; sister: Arlene; and one infant grandchild Mark.

Marcella Svoboda

 

Marcella Svoboda of Protivin died Saturday, June 17, 2006

 

Mass of Christian Burial for Svoboda "Marcie" C. Svoboda of Protivin was held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 22 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. David Beckman officiating. Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Protivin. Pallbearers were her grandsons: Michael Johnsrud, Jason Johnsrud, Brian Svoboda, Bradley Svoboda, Eric Svoboda, Joel Svoboda, and Ryan Svoboda. Honorary pallbearers were her granddaughters: Allison Svoboda, Kristin Wilson, Keri Johnsrud, Dana James, and Sara Gay.

Friends were to call from 3:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 21 at Hugeback's Protivin Funeral Home where there was a 4:00 p.m. Rosary, 6:00 p.m. Scripture Service and a 6:30 p.m. Video Memorial Tribute. Further visitation was Thursday morning from 8:00-10:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Marcie, 88, died Saturday, June 17, 2006 at the Bethesda Meadow Nursing Home in St. Louis, MO.

Marcella Caroline Svoboda was born July 12, 1917, on the Kalishek family farm located two and one half miles south of Protivin in rural Chickasaw County, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Kovarik) Kalishek. She received her elementary education in a rural country school and then at Holy Trinity Grade School. At the age of 14, the Kalishek family moved into Protivin where she would help with her parents in their family meat market. Marcie joined the adult choir as a freshman and then became the church organist and later, music director. She was a 1935 graduate of Rudolphinium High School in Protivin.

On May 15, 1939, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, she married Edward John Svoboda. To this union four children were born. The couple made Protivin their home for the remainder of their lives. In 1944, Edward "Swab" and Marcie purchased the local poultry business from Ed's uncle. The business continued with Marcie and the children playing a larger role when Edward became ill in the early 1960's. Edward died on August 25, 1977, and shortly thereafter Marcie sold the business.

 
 

Marcie was always very musically active in her church and was helpful in the early days of the Protivin Czech Choir. She also spent time making cakes for weddings and other special events.

In December of 2003, she became a resident at the Oneota Nursing Home in Decorah and in February of this year went to live in the Bethesda Nursing Home in St. Louis to be near family.

Survivors include her three sons: Larry (Helen) Svoboda of Clear Lake, Edward "Bud" (Diane) Svoboda of St. Charles, MO, and John (Nancy) Svoboda of Omaha, NE; one daughter: Margaret Johnsrud of Chicago; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one niece: Grace McNeal of Protivin.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; and a brother: Benjamin Kalishek.

David Wernett

David Wernett, 61, died Monday, July 3, 2006 services on Friday, July 7.

Funeral services for David C. Wernett, formerly of Cresco were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 7, 2006 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco, IA. Interment was in the Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak, IA.

David, 61, died Monday, July 3, 2006 at Rochester Health Care in Rochester, MN.

David C. Wernett was born November 8, 1944 the son of Charles and Dorothy (Wilbur) Wernett in Iowa City, IA. David was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church by Rev. Frankie. He was a very caring and loving young man with a very contagious smile which was always very genuine especially with in dealings with family and friends. He made and kept many dear friends. Those friends that he made were his second family and he lived for all their gatherings. He would sometimes travel several states to attend picnics and camp for weeks at a time, often with his dog "Pepper". He always was giving a helping hand to those in need.

David attended the Council Bluffs School For The Deaf where he took shoe repair and baking classes, and graduated in 1963. After school he worked at both several years before moving to Minneapolis where he worked at Globe Tool and Manufacturing Inc. He was a very dear brother and we are going to miss him tremendously.

He is survived by his mother: Dorothy Wernett of Cresco, IA; brother: Duane Wernett of Rochester, MN; sister: Cherri Gram of Newton, IA, and sister: Ann Deihl of Spring, TX.

 
 

He was preceded in death by his father; his sister: Sharon Johnson; brothers: Frank Wernett and Perry Manley; grandparents: Candace and Charles Sr. Wernett and Genevieve Burgman and Oscar Wilbur.


 

Robert Fravel

Robert Fravel, 78, died Monday, July 3, 2006

Funeral services for Robert P. Fravel of Cresco, IA were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2006 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Lime Springs, IA. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.

Robert, 78, died Monday, July 3, 2006 at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN following a lengthy illness.

Robert was born on October 28, 1927 the son of Glen and Dora (Pilgrim) Fravel in Cresco, IA. Robert graduated Cresco High School in 1948. He was drafted during the Korean War. He served as private first class Calvary Scout. His division was named "Hell on Wheels" and was the 57th medium tank battalion. He spent 17 months in Germany during 1951 and 1952. He then was Honorably discharged and returned to Cresco were he farmed.

He married Janice Griffin (Garrison), and to this union two children were born, Richard (Anne) of Mabel, MN and Karen (Brad) Hurst of Cresco, IA. Robert also took on three stepchildren; Diana, Jennifer, and Duane, and had two sons die at birth.

Then in 1967 Robert married Yvonne Lewis (Spinler) at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They enjoyed 38 years of marriage and continued to farm all of this time. To this union two children were born; Rose (Bill) Goetsch of rural Cresco, IA, and Ron (Rinetta) Fravel of Cresco, IA. Again Robert took on two step children; Dan Lewis of New Hampton, IA, and Brenda Lewis (Block) of New Hampton, IA.

 
 

Robert enjoyed reading, puzzles, and putting model airplanes together. He was always jolly, and quick to smile or laugh, and just enjoyed life. He retired after many years of milking dairy cattle. He would have been 80 years in another year and four months.

He is survived by his wife Yvonne; six children; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers; and one uncle: Keith.


 

Tyler Tank

A Mass of Christian Burial for Tyler W. Tank of New Hampton was held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 6, 2006 at Holy Family Parish - St. Joseph Center in New Hampton with Rev. Don Zapla of Holy Family Parish and Pastor Kevin Frey of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. The pall was placed on Tyler's casket by his parents and their spouses. The offertory gifts were presented by Tyler's Godparents: Amy Drewis and Dave and Barb Tank. Interment was in the New Hampton City Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Brandon Derry, Kyle Oxendine, Andy Hugeback, Alec Amundson, Simon Schuchardt, Brice Schissel, Eddy Rausch, Matt Tank, Kevin Vsetecka, and Brian Tank. Honorary pallbearers were: the "Class of 2009."

Tyler, 15, died accidentally on Sunday, July 2, 2006 in Dane County Wisconsin.

Tyler Wayne Tank was born January 2, 1991, in Rochester, MN, the son of Jerry Wayne and Rochelle Renae (Derry) Tank. He attended elementary and middle school in New Hampton and recently finished his freshman year. Tyler was very active in football and wrestling while in school.

He loved hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, paint-balling, four-wheeling and going to the races. Tyler liked hanging-out with his friends and during the summer months he worked construction with his dad. Tyler already had his mind set on going to Iowa State University to study automotive engineering.

 
 

Tyler will be remembered by his family and friends as a kind, generous and caring young man who had a contagious smile. His memory will live forever in their hearts.

Surviving are his parents, Rochelle (Troy) Pitzenberger and Jerry (Ilona) Tank, all of New Hampton; two brothers: Tony Tank and Joel Kuehn of New Hampton; a step-brother: Terry Schott of Fredericksburg; one sister: Victoria Tank of New Hampton; six step-sisters: Jessica Polster of New Hampton, Mandy Jo and Jennifer Schott, both of Fredericksburg, Emma, Lindsay and Caitlin Pitzenberger of New Hampton; maternal grandparents: Roger and Lynne Derry of New Hampton; maternal great-grandparents: Mary Foster of Riceville, Doris and Darrell Derry of LeRoy, MN.; paternal grandmother: Jean Tank of New Hampton; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

George, 89, died Saturday, July 8, 2006 at his home following a short battle with cancer.

George A. Johnson was born May 20, 1917 in rural Chester, IA the son of John Albert and Frances Cordelia (Smith) Johnson. He graduated from Lime Springs High School in 1934.

On October 12, 1944, he married Kathleen Hazel Armstrong at the Chester United Methodist Church and together they raised three children.

 
 

Bud farmed and also worked for his father-in-law, W.J. Armstrong. In later years, Bud did carpentry work. He was a member of Chester United Methodist Church.

He enjoyed dancing, playing cards, meeting the guys for coffee and cards and John Deere tractors and gas engines.

Bud is survived by his daughter: Karen (Mike) Wendel; son: Reed (Les) Johnson, and daughter: Jane (Rick) Ullom, all of Chester, IA; one sister: Nellie Miller of Chillicothe, IL; six grandchildren: Ben, Jill, Dana Johnson, Holly (Beau) Voigt, Jason and Kyle Ullom; and one great-grandchild: Heath Voigt.

Anna Grace, 81, died Tuesday, July 4, 2006 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah after a long illness.

Anna Grace DeCou was born January 19, 1925 on the family farm near Plymouth Rock the daughter of Frank and Julia (Daley) Ryan. Anna Grace attended Winneshiek County country school and graduated from Canton High School in 1943.

On January 25, 1945 Anna Grace married Donald DeCou at St. Agnes Catholic Church at Plymouth Rock, IA. They farmed near Burr Oak until 1972 when they moved to Burr Oak, where they owned and operated the Burr Oak Mercantile. They moved into the Oneota Apartments in Decorah in 1994, in March of 2006 they moved to the Oneota Riverview Care Facility.

Anna Grace enjoyed her dogs, watching sports, fishing, farming and going to "The Boat".

 
 

Anna Grace's survivors include her husband; Donald of Decorah, IA; one son: David of Decorah, IA; two sisters: Frances Ryan of Rochester MN and Jane Headington of Austin, MN; two sisters-in-law: Rose Ryan of Cedar Falls,IA and Evelyn Ryan of Decorah, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

Anna Grace was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter: Shirley in 1952; three brothers: Harold, Edward and Layle Ryan; four sisters: Phyllis McCabe, Mae Gossman, Doris Carr and Donna Whalen.

Bill, 85, died Sunday, July 9, 2006 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

William John Steffen was born March 9, 1921 in Howard County, northwest of Cresco, the son of Jacob (Jake) and Catherine (Arens) Steffen. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco. He attended and graduated from St. Joseph's grade school in Cresco.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, he enlisted in the United States Navy Air Force. He spent two years in Corpus Christi, TX, where he trained to be a mechanic on the Navy's PBY seaplanes. From Corpus Christi, he was sent to Hawaii where he spent the rest of his enlistment.

 
 

He married Marion Nehl on June 7, 1948 at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. They became the parents of five children, Michelle (Neil) Funke, Warren (Karen), Julie (Dean) Walsh, all of Cresco, Keith and Lee in California.

He farmed near Cresco for many years and also operated a poultry farm with an egg delivery route. Later he worked at Hawkeye Tri County electrical Co-op in Cresco and retired in December of 1987.

His only hobby and past time was fishing, which he did every Sunday during the summer.

He is survived by his wife Marion; his children and their spouses; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one step great-grandchild; two brothers: Clarence (Evelyn) Steffen and Gerald (Elaine) Steffen of Cresco; a sister: Gladys Koenigsfeld of Traer; and a brother-in-law: Gerald Nehl of Cresco.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law: Lloyd Koenigsfeld.

Funeral services for Lorence M. Lundby of Cresco, IA and formerly of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 2 at First Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. John Gannett officiating. Organist was Rick Nance. Soloist was Steve Casterton singing "Beautiful Savior" and "The Lord's Prayer." Congregational hymns were: "Rock of Ages" and "O God, Our Help In Ages Past." Interment was in Lincoln Lutheran Cemetery in rural Ridgeway, IA. Pallbearers were: Marc Rue, Daniel Lundby, Clifton Fjelstul, Lance Rue, Sarah Moyer, and Ray Torresdal.

Lorence, 87, died Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco following a long illness.

Lorence Marion Lundby was born April 15, 1919 in Ridgeway, IA, the son of Elling and Josephine (Bakken) Lundby. He was baptized and confirmed at Lincoln Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway. Lorence was educated in country school and graduated from Ridgeway High School with the Class of 1937.

He married Mildred O. Landswerk on April 1, 1939. To this union four children were born: Lorence Marion, Joan, Michael and Rebecca.

Lorence farmed for many years near Ridgeway in Lincoln Township. The couple later moved to a small acreage near Decorah in 1971. He enjoyed raising Clydesdale horses and both angus and shorthorn cattle. Lorence also worked at the lumberyard, First Lutheran Church and Roverud Construction in Decorah. The couple relocated to Cresco in 1993.

 
 

Lorence was a 4-H leader for many years. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Cresco and a former member of Lincoln Lutheran Church and Decorah Lutheran Church. He also held membership in the National Clysdale Association, the Shorthorn Association and he showed registered shorthorn cattle at local fairs for many years. For seven years, Lorence and Mildred participated in the Friendly Town Project, an effort to bring inner city youth from Chicago to a rural community for a two-week visit.

Lorence loved his family and was active in all of their activities. He also enjoyed baseball.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Mildred of Cresco; three children: Joan (Darryl) Rue of St. Louis, MO, Michael (State Senator Mary) Lundby of Marion, IA, and Rebecca (William) Moyer of Carlock, IL; four grandchildren: Marc (Andrea) Rue of West Union, IA, Lance (Angela) Rue of O'Fallen, MO, Daniel Lundby of Bronx, NY and Sarah Moyer of Carlock, IL; one great-granddaughter: Madison Rue; two step grandchildren, Alexis and Colton Caldwell; and a sister: LeVohn Miller of North Richland Hills, TX.

Lorence was preceded in death by a son: Sgt. Lorence Marion Lundby who died in the Vietnam War on March 4, 1968; his parents; two sisters: Edna Lundby and Beulah Werhan; and a brother: Clarence Lundby.

Funeral services for Richard D. Bork were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 3, 2006 at St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, IA with Rev. Steve Brackett officiating. Richard was 43 years, six months, and 17 days old when he died on June 30, 2006 at the home of his mother at Postville, IA.

Richard Dean Bork was born December 13, 1962, at Cresco, IA, the son of Robert Gene Bork and Dorothy Marie (Creger) Looney. He was baptized January 20, 1963 in Immanuel Lutheran Church at Cresco, IA and confirmed May 6, 1979 in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville by the Reverend Norris C. Swenson. Richard attended Postville Community Schools from 1968 to 1981. He served in the U. S. Navy for three years and sailed on the U. S. S. Carl Vinson on its maiden voyage around the world.

Richard was employed at the Iowa Turkey Plant and Agri Processors in Postville. He then moved to Independence, IA and worked at the Tyson Plant in 1990. In 2004 he moved to West Union and worked for Dura.

His interests included fishing, playing golf, and he was an avid Hawkeye, Raiders, and Cubs fan.

 
 

He is survived by a daughter: Taneasha of Calmar, IA; a son: Brandon of Janesville, IA; his parents: Mike and Dorothy Looney and Bob and Phyllis Bork, all of Postville; three brothers: Jim of Cedar Rapids, IA, Brian of Winona, MN, and Lonnie of Iowa City, IA; three sisters: Heather (Mark) Suckow, Melissa (Travis) Blockhus, all of Cresco, IA, and Jodi (Ryan) Koch of Clarence, IA; four nephews: Dylan, Michael, Cole, and Conner; and five nieces, Emma, Grace, Paetyn, Hannah, and Rylee.

Nashua — Mary A. Boomgarden, 82, of Nashua, died Saturday evening, July 15, 2006 in the Hospice Unit at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

 

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at St. Michaelâs Catholic Church with Rev Carl Ries officiating and burial will be in St. Michaelâs Cemetery both in Nashua.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. A Rosary Service will be held at 4 p.m. and a Scripture Service at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Visitation will continue at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

Mary Anne Boomgarden was born January 3, 1924 in Frederic, Wisconsin, the daughter of John G. and Frances (Engelhart) Sullivan. They moved to Waverly where Mary graduated from Waverly High School in 1942.

She was united in marriage to Jake Boomgarden on August 8, 1949; the couple moved to Nashua and started Jakeâs Food Market. To this union a daughter was born. Jake passed away October 14, 1961 and Mary managed the store for a couple of years. After she sold the store Mary served as Deputy Treasurer for Chickasaw County for a number of years. She retired in 1983 from the Cronin Law Office in Nashua.

Mary was a member of St. Michaelâs Catholic Church serving her church faithfully in many different capacities. She was also a member on the Nashua Town & Country Club, Nashua Boat Club and V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, bird-watching and word puzzles in her spare time.

Survivors include her daughter, Cherie (Phil) Hatlem of Grand Rapids, MI; three brothers, Tim (Darlyce) Sullivan of Waverly, Jerry (Bonnie) Sullivan of Odessa, MO and Bob (Joyce) Sullivan of Shell Rock; also one sister-in-law, Vi Sullivan of Nashua.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Jake; her parents, two brothers, Patrick and John Sullivan.

Virgil, 87, died Saturday, July 15 at the Evans Memorial Home.

Virgil Stanley Duneman was born February 21, 1919 in Howard County the son of Fred and Olive (Crisp) Duneman. He was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church. He attended the rural schools in Howard County.

On December 28, 1945, he married Evelyn Schneider at St. John's Lutheran parsonage in Wykoff, MN. They became the parents of four children. Virgil was a long time employee of Howard County until his retirement in 1983. He lived his entire life in Howard County.

 
 

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and a member of the Cresco Wildlife Club. Virgil enjoyed fishing, stock car races and playing cards with family and friends.

Survivors are two sons: Richard (Charlotte) of Fort Dodge, IA, Danny (Melanie) of Tomah, WI; daughters: Janelle (Dale) Hruska of Chandler, AZ and Lisa (Dean) Reicks of Cresco, IA; nine grandchildren: Amy (Chris) Jones, Scott Duneman, Brandon Grover, Aidan Duneman, Alesia (Michael) Hageman, Melissa (Heath) Pomeroy, Alyson, Hailey and Ashley Reicks; six great-grandchildren: Tyler Jones, Gunnar and Kian Hageman Jordan, Miranda and Brianna Pomeroy; one brother: Jerry of New Hampton, IA; and two sisters: Sylvia Price and Eunice Kaupel of Oregon.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Bernice M. Showalter of Elma, IA was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 17, 2006 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Monsignor Paul Showalter and Reverend Linus Rasing concelebrating the mass.

Theresa Burke was the organist and accompanied the Immaculate Conception Church choir singing: "Be Not Afraid," "Prayer of St. Francis," and "Here I Am Lord." Kathleen Thiele sang "On This Day O Beautiful Mother." Randy Showalter was the lector and Peg Mueterthies, Christine Sonchak and Mary Jo Showalter presented the offertory gifts. The pall was placed by Bernice's son, daughter, and daughter-in-law. Interment was in St. Patrick's Cemetery at St. Cecilia, rural Elma. Bernice, 95, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Bernice Mary Showalter was born October 17, 1910 on a farm near St. Cecelia, the daughter of Frank and Florence (Roche) Riley. She received her education at a county school near her home.

 
 

On June 7, 1932, Bernice married Harold Showalter at the St. Patrick's Church at St. Cecelia. Following their marriage the couple farmed in the Elma area and then moved to Mason City where they resided for six years before returning to Elma.

In 1959, the couple opened the Dew Drop Inn and operated it for five years. Bernice also served as foster grandparent at the Comprehensive Systems in Elma for many years.

Following the death of her husband, Bernice was able to remain in her own home until 2005 at the age of 93, when she went to live at the Colonial Manor.

Over the years she enjoyed going out to eat, sight seeing and reading. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and Rosary Society in Elma.

Bernice is survived by a daughter: Marie (Neil) Jones of New Hampton; a son: Mike (Ann Marie) Showalter of Milton, VT; a daughter-in-law: Carol Showalter of Waterloo; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a brother: Lee (Veronica) Riley of Charles City; a sister: Fran Shannon of New Hampton; and two sisters-in-law: Agnes Riley of Elma and Josephine Riley of Ft. Meyers, FL.

Virgil S. "Steve" DeGreve of Cresco, IA

A Mass of Christian Burial for Virgil S. "Steve" DeGreve of Cresco, IA was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2006 at Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with Msgr. Stanley Hayek officiating.

Lector was Jerome Nibaur, the readings were: Wisdom 3: 1-9, responsorial song was sung, second reading was Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 4: 13-5 1 and the Gospel selected was Matthew 11: 25-30, following Msgr.'s Homily the general intercessations was #2, page 90 (167-B). Marilyn Novak was the organist and Joe Wacha was the song leader. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were: Dustin Rosendahl, Tony Halverson, Larry Voves, Gerald Steffen, and Kirk Ollendieck.

Virgil, 89, died Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Virgil Steffen DeGreve was born February 18, 1917 and raised on a farm five miles north and one and one half miles east of Cresco, IA, the son of Edmund and Genevieve (Steffen) DeGreve. He attended the rural school and graduated from Cresco High School in 1933. Following high school, he wanted to attend Ames, but times were tough and he had to help out on the farm.

 
 

In October of 1942, he walked into the local draft board and requested to be drafted. He entered the active service in November at Camp Dodge. He served as an Airplane Maintenance Technician and attended Boeing School of Aeronautics in Oakland, CA, later going to the Lockheed Factory School where P-38's were built. He was discharged on his birthday in 1946. On returning home, he went to work for the Farmers Creamery and in the fall, he worked for Sears until 1947 when he and Carl Stopperan started up the Dray Business.

On August 16, 1947 he married Marie J. Meyer at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco. He eventually began driving a tank wagon delivering fuel for heat, and for farmers. While delivering petroleum products, he started selling pickup campers, toppers, and trailers. And he and Marie made and delivered ice to local businesses.

He was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W., Notre Dame Parish, and Knights of Columbus.

His only survivors are a goddaughter and several cousins.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marie in 1992; and an infant child at birth.

A Memorial Mass for Charles E. "Chuck" Howard a former Cresco resident was held on Saturday, June 24, 2006 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Sun City Center, FL.

Charles, 91, died Monday, June 12, 2006.

He served in the Navy during World War II, lived in Florham Park, NJ for many years, and retired in Sun City Center, FL.

He is survived by a daughter: Mary Pat (Bob) Suessman of Whitehouse Station, NJ; a son: Jim (Penny) Howard of Circle Pines, MN; six grandchildren; one brother: J.T. Howard of Garland, TX; and two sisters: Betty Grange of Surprise, AZ and Joan Murray Smith of Winthrop Harbor, IL.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife Ethel who died in October 2005; a son: David who died in 1988; his parents: J.W. and Lottie Howard; two brothers: Bob and John; and one sister: Gladys Flick.


A Mass of the Resurrection for Dr. Jeanne K. Lingbeck, Phd. Edu. of Burnsville, MN was held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 24, 2006 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Savage in Savage. Interment was private.

Cremation Society of MN in Edina, MN handled the arrangements.

Dr. Jeanne, 59, died Wednesday, July 19, 2006.

Dr. Jeanne was a devoted educator for 35 years. She served in the Rochester, Osseo, and Burnsville School Districts. She had a passion for literacy and touched the lives of many throughout her years of service.

Dr. Jeanne is survived by one son: Bradley (Michele); grandchildren: Annabelle and Jack; parents: Darlene (Jack) Byrnes; brother: Robert (Becky) Albertson. Also survived by many dear friends.


 

 Leona B. Rosendahl
 

A Mass of Christian Burial for Leona B. Rosendahl of Calmar was held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 24, 2006 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Organist was Alan Sensor, lector was Alberta Huinker. St. Aloysius Choir sang "How Great Thou Art," "Here I Am, Lord," "On Eagle's Wings," and "Amazing Grace." Interment was in Calmar Lutheran Cemetery in Calmar. Pallbearers were: Greg Staut, Bryan Schmitt, Chad Snyder, Michael Pfeffer, Mark Oberheu, Michael Oberheu, Daniel Oberheu, and Terry Rosendahl.

Leona Rosendahl, 92, of Calmar, IA, died Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, IA, following a short illness.

Schluter-Balik handled the arrangements.

Leona Beatrice (Sobolik) Rosendahl was born August 12, 1913, the daughter of James and Elizabeth (Kipta) Sobolik near Calmar, IA. Leona attended schools in Calmar, graduating from high school in 1930.

She married Herman Rosendahl August 13, 1934. Leona was a clerk at the local grocery store and a cook at a local restaurant until the couple opened a shoe store in Calmar. She also did cleaning at the Area I College Campus in Calmar. Leona was a life-long resident of Calmar, until entering the Cresco nursing home in March 2006.

Leona enjoyed being a homemaker, and especially loved to bake bread. She kept her entire family in homemade biscuits as long as she was able.

 
 

Herman and Leona enjoyed dancing, going fishing, and playing cards, but their greatest pleasure was spending time with their family. Leona was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and the Rosary Society.

She is survived by two daughters: Janice (LaVern) Schmitt of Lime Springs, IA and Carolee (Norman) Oberheu of Denver, IA; one son: Dennis (Mary Ann) Rosendahl of Des Moines, IA; one brother: Arnold Sobolik of Cedar Rapids, IA; one sister-in-law: Ellen Jordahl of Decorah, IA; eight grandchildren: Bryan (Betty) Schmitt, Julie (Michael) Pfeffer, Michael (Tina) Oberheu, Mark Oberheu, Daniel (Shannon) Oberheu, Tami (Greg) Staut, Terry (Deb) Rosendahl, and Melissa (Chad) Snyder; and 14 great- grandchildren: Adam Schmitt, Eric Schmitt, Elizabeth Oberheu, Zachary Oberheu, triplets: Lucy, Killian and Jackson Oberheu, Clare Oberheu, Mitchell Staut, Jacob Staut, Joshua Staut, Alivia Rosendahl, Isaac Rosendahl, and Kennedy Snyder.

Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Herman in 1992; her parents; a sister: Helen Schneberger; and a daughter in infancy: Linda Sue Rosendahl.


 


 

Memorial services for Frank C. Voyna of Ostrander, MN will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ostrander with Rev. Nancy Solomonson officiating. Interment will be in the Ostrander Cemetery.

Friends were to call at the Hindt Funeral Home in LeRoy from 5-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25, 2006.

Frank, 55, died Saturday, July 22, 2006 at Rochester Methodist Hospital of cancer.

Frank C. Voyna was born April 3, 1951 in Cresco, IA the son of William and Emily (Vopava) Voyna. He attended and graduated from Crestwood High School in Cresco.

On April 29, 1974 he married Eileen Berg at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ostrander, MN. After their marriage they lived in Cresco and later moved to Ostrander in 1977 and have resided there since. Frank worked for Sovereign Grain, Mathias Tiling, and then worked for a number of trucking firms in the area.

 
 

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a member of the Ostrander Fire Department for 22 years.

Frank enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his granddaughter.

He is survived by his wife Eileen of Ostrander; one daughter: Tasha (Mike) Nelson of Elkton, MN; one son: Tim Voyna of Rochester; one granddaughter: Bria Nelson; and three brothers: Marvin (Pat) Voyna of Conyers, GA, Jerry (Nancy) Voyna of Des Moines, and Al (Karen) Voyna of Cresco.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister: Phyllis.


 

 

Funeral services for Wilmer W. "Willie" Lukes were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 24, 2006 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. David M. Beckman officiating. The pall was placed at the beginning of the service by the family. Lector was Bill Berka, the four children carried the gifts during the offertory, Marlene Pecinovsky accompanied the congregation and Miriam Humpal in song. Loraine Vopova and Bill Berka were Eucharist Ministers. Pallbearers were his grandchildren.

Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Wilmer, 78, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, IA where he moved on Monday.

Wilmer Walter Lukes was born December 21, 1927 in Chickasaw County, IA, the son of Godlove G. and Cecelia (Novak) Lukes. He graduated from Rudolphinum High School in Protivin. As a young man, he helped out on the family farm located about one mile south of Protivin. The family moved to Protivin in 1947. He started working as parts manager for Protivin Implement during which time he hauled cream for the creamery in Protivin from 1951 until 1960. For a short time he worked for Haug Hardware in Spillville where he started installing pumps and doing plumbing. Willie then started in partnership with his brother, Arthur, in the Plumbing and Electrical business. He also was secretary for Bohemian Mutual Insurance, a position he held for over 40 years, and he was an adjuster for IMT Insurance. When he retired, he stared doing lawns and snow removal for many residents.

Willie enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre, going to Bingo, fishing and gardening.

He was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Workman.

 
 

On September 27, 1948 he married Marcella Komarek in the Holy Trinity Church at Protivin, IA. They became the parents of four children: Joyce, Gary, Wayne and Joan.

He is survived by his children: Joyce Schutte, Gary (Mary) all of Decorah, IA, Wayne (Deborah) of Marion, IA, and Joan Heinrich (Roland Dempsey) of Orlando, FL, Stanly Heinrich (Laurie Schroeder) of Marquette, IA; seven grandchildren: Eileen Gerth (Michael Gerth), Leah (Greg) Smith, Kara Lukes, Heather Lukes (Aaron), Bradley Lukes, Noah Heinrich, and Kelsey Heinrich; five great-grandchildren: Jacob and Hannah Gerth, Gavin Smith, Corbin and Hunter Lukes; two brothers: Robert of Mason City, IA and Joseph (Elenora) of Cedar Rapids, IA.

Wilmer was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marcella on September 20, 2003; two brothers: Arthur and Daniel; and one sister: Helen Pechota.
