Nicholas L. Gansen

ELMA - Nicholas L. Gansen, 77, of Elma, died Monday, November 27, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 30 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Reverend Ray Atwood celebrating the Mass. Mary Gansen was the organist and accompanied the Immaculate Conception Church Choir and those in attendance singing "Be Not Afraid," "Prayer Of St. Francis," "How Great Thou Art," and "Let There Be Peace On Earth." Lectors for the service were Kate DePauw and Elizabeth Gansen. Alexis Ptacek, Emily Eliyahu and Audrey Eliyahu presented the offertory gifts. The pall was placed by Nicholas' wife and children and Larry Gansen served as Eucharistic minister. Mass servers were Garrett Praska and Andrew Zweibohmer.

Burial with military honors was in the Calvary Cemetery in Elma with Nathan Gansen, Ben Gansen, Brian DePauw, Robert Case, Tim Gansen, and Ken Gansen serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers were Isaac Ptacek and Andres Diaz.

Military Honors were accorded by the Elma American Legion, John Frahm Post 597.

Friends called from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma where there was a 4:00 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary and 6:00 p.m. Parish Scripture Service. Visitation was also an hour prior to services at the church.

Nicholas Lee Gansen, the son of Clarence and Geneva (Jacoby) Gansen, was born January 28, 1929, on a farm east of Elma. Educated in country school, he graduated from the Immaculate Conception Academy in 1947. Nick then farmed with his father until entering the U.S. Army on October 4, 1951. Nick was a Corporal and served as a lineman and forward observer during the Korean War. On June 22, 1953, he was united in marriage to Regina (Dolly) Praska at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. The couple honeymooned in Colorado Springs, where he received his honorable discharge from the Army on July 17, 1953. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze stars and the United Nations Service Medal. He farmed with his father near Elma, then purchased and farmed the homestead where he was born until his retirement in 1993. Nick remained active on the farm when his son, Greg, took over the operation.

 
 

Nick was active in the community of Elma. He served on the Colonial Manor Board and the Howard County Equity Board, serving terms as president on both. He was also involved in the reconstruction of the Immaculate Conception Church in Elma after the 1968 tornado.

He enjoyed his family, fishing, hunting, music, nature, reading, golfing, and mowing the lawn. Nick was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Elma where he was a dedicated choir member for many years and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4144 of Elma.

He will always be remembered for his wit, his sense of humor and his conversation.

Survivors include his wife Regina "Dolly"; nine children - Larry (Julie) Gansen, Chanhassen, MN, Regina (Todd) Rooks, Nevada, IA, Nancy (Ed) DePauw, Hudson, WI, Susan (Randy) Swanson, Cedar Falls, Gregory Gansen, Elma, Beverly (Shawn) Eliyahu, Roseville, MN, Barbara (Dave) Ptacek, Cedar Rapids, Christopher and his special friend Susana Rivera, Burnsville, MN, and Stephanie Gansen, Lourdes; 13 grandchildren - Nathan Gansen, Benjamin Gansen, Elizabeth Gansen, Kate DePauw, Brian DePauw, Robert Case, Patty (Dave) Braunger, Beth (Kwan) Porter, Emily Eliyahu, Audrey Eliyahu, Alexis Ptacek, Isaac Ptacek, and Andres Diaz; three great-grandchildren Devrah Braunger, Kai Porter, and Jyelle Porter; two brothers - Gerald (Marge) Gansen and Joe (Eleanor) Gansen, both of Elma; four sisters - Mary Finley, Story City, Kate White, Alta Vista, Norma (Ken) Kolbet, Naperville, IL and Jeannette (Brian) Glaser, Kansas City, MO.

Preceded in death by his parents and a brother John in infancy.


 

Beatrice “Bea” Jane Fosse

NASHUA- Beatrice “Bea” Jane Fosse, 87, of Nashua died Monday, November 27, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center - New Hampton in New Hampton, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday December 1, 2006 at the United Methodist Church in Nashua with Pastor Karl Schiltz officiating. Nelda Shepard will serve as the organist and lead the congregation in the singing of “I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry,” “This Is My Fathers World” and “Hymn of Promise.”

Committal services and interment will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Geneseo Methodist Cemetery rural Buckingham, IA.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Beatrice Jane Fosse was born March 28, 1919 the daughter of John and Beatrice (Cooper) Kerr. Bea was raised on a farm in Eagle Township in Black Hawk County and attended the Orange Township School. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and Drake University. She completed additional studies at the University of Colorado. Bea was a teacher in the Lamont, Tama and Des Moines school districts.

 
 

Bea was united in marriage to Ames D. Fosse at the Geneseo Methodist Church October 24, 1953. Ames and Bea resided in Des Moines until moving to Nashua in 1964. They enjoyed fishing, spending time with friends and family. Bea was a member of the Nashua Methodist Church, Eastern Star and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

Survivors include two sons, Kirby Fosse (Valerie), Ionia and Rick (Karen) Fosse, Iowa City; two grandchildren, Emily and Sam Fosse, Iowa City; four sisters, Marjorie Ibbotson, Tingley, Harriett (Larry) Garlock and Mary (Curt) Glessner both of Waterloo, Trudy Grimes, Grundy Center.

Preceded in death by her husband, Ames D. Fosse on August 23, 2005 and her parents.


 

Willis Baldwin

CHARLES CITY - Willis Baldwin, 83, of Charles City, died Tuesday, November 28, 2006, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Reverend Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and a Vigil Scriptural Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Brian P. Burke

LIME SPRINGS - A Mass of Christian Burial for Brian P. Burke of rural Lime Springs was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 13, 2006 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Rev. Ray Atwood officiating. Pallbearers were: Paul Winkels, Andy Worple, Kyle Finnell, Aaron Burke, Kevin O'Brien, Scott O'Brien, Chuck Larson, and Jeremiah Larson. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Elma.

Friends were to call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, November 12 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma where there was a 4 p.m. Rosary and 6:30 p.m. Parish Scripture Service. Visitation was also held from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 13 at the funeral home.

Brian, 16, died Tuesday, November 7, 2006 near his home.

Brian Paul Burke was born February 17, 1990 at New Hampton, the son of Joseph and Sandi (Dohlman) Burke. He was baptized at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma and confirmed at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Chester. The family lived north of Elma until 1993, when they moved to their rural Lime Springs home. He attended Riceville Community Schools and was currently a Junior at the Riceville Community High School. During the summer months and after school, Brian worked at O'Brien Construction in Elma.

He also spent much of his time caring for his nieces and nephews and was always willing to set things aside to help someone else.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed sharing these pastimes with his brothers, nephews and cousins. Brian loved muscle cars and spent time researching them on the internet and drawing pictures of them, listening to country music, and helping others. He dreamed of joining the Air Force, becoming a pilot and flying jets. He was proud of his family and Brian will always be remembered as the little “Big” brother because his brothers and sisters could always turn to him for advice and because of the concern he showed toward others especially his nieces and nephews.

 
 

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Elma.

Brian is survived by his parents: Joe and Sandi Burke of rural Lime Springs; grandparents: John and Eleanor Burke of Elma; two brothers: Tom Burke and friend Tonya Kelly of Harmony, MN and Nick Burke and his friend Sara Richardson of Cresco, IA; two sisters: Amanda Burke and Amy Burke, both of rural Lime Springs; three nephews: Brandon Burke, Brady Burke, and Shane Burke; two nieces: Chloe Burke and Brooklyn Shelby Burke.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Floyd and JoEtta Dohlman; and a niece: Shelby Rose Burke.

Funeral services are pending in Texas.

NASHUA - Evelyn L. Rausch, 89, Nashua died Thursday morning, November 30, 2006 at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Private family services are tentatively being planned with the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua (641) 435-4134.

Burial Will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

CHARLES CITY - Nels H. Knutson, 71, of Charles City, died Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 2 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton.

Burial with Military honors will be in the New Hampton Cemetery.

Susan Kay Ball
 

 

CRESCO - Susan Kay Ball, 50, Cresco, died Wednesday, November 29, 2006 in a one-vehicle accident in Howard County.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 4 at Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Richard J. Ament presiding. Music was provided by Brian and Larry Ball. Casket bearers were Jammy Galligan, Graham Jones, Dan Vagts, Tom Hove, Scott Johnson and Wayne Lepa.

Conway Funeral Home, Cresco, assisted with the arrangements.

Susan Kay Ball was born September 9, 1956 at New Hampton, IA, the daughter of Raymond and Joan (Parks) Ball. She graduated from New Hampton High School in 1974. On December 6, 1975 Susan married Bradley Halvorson and they became the parents of a daughter, Rayna Halvorson on March 13, 1978.

She married Harold Flatland on July 27, 1993 in Red Wing, MN. The couple resided on a farm near Cresco.

Susan obtained her Nursing degree in 1985 at Northeast Iowa Community College. She was employed by Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, for the past 16 years. The majority of her nursing career was spent working at St. Mary's Hospital in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit. She was a talented and well-liked nurse.

 
 

Sue had many interests, including gardening, amateur photography, traveling, reading and shopping. She loved animals and took special care of all her cats and dogs. Sue liked to socialize with friends and relatives; her home was always open to everyone. She enjoyed being in her kitchen and entertaining. Her smile and wit will always be remembered!

Surviving are her husband and best friend, Harold; one daugher, Rayna Halvorson, Rochester, MN; parents, Ray and Joan Ball, New Hampton; grandmothers, Luella Parks and Irene Ball, both of New Hampton; one sister, Valerie Ball, Princeton, WVA; one brother, Tom (Joan) Ball, Bradenton, FL; Valerie's children, Jammy (Traci) Galligan and their children, Nick and Jared; Melissa (Graham) Jones and their child, Cooper; and Tom's daughter, Heather.

Preceding her in death were her grandfathers, Tom Parks and William Ball.


 

Monica Brickley

INDEPENDENCE - Monica Brickley, 97, Independence, died Friday, December 1, 2006 at the Buchanan County Health Center Long Term Care.

She was born October 21, 1909 at Monti, IA, the daughter of William P. and Rose E. (Dobbins) Ryan. She married Martin J. Brickley on November 26, 1936 at Monti.

Monica received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, and taught at country schools, Monti Consolidated and St. John's Elementary, Independence, until her retirement.

Surviving are a son, Pat (Carol) Brickley, New Hampton; three grandsons, Kelly (Katrina) Brickley, Decorah, Dave (Elaine) Brickley, Oregon, WI, Tim (Christy) Brickley, Des Moines; four great-grandchildren, Connor, Meghan and Casey Brickley and Brittany Allen.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Martin in 1964

Karen G. Weidow

RIDGEWAY - Funeral services for Karen G. Weidow of Ridgeway, IA were held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 3, 2006 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway with Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson officiating. Organist was Martha Jensen. Congregational hymns sung were: “On Eagle's Wings”, “How Great Thou Art”, and “Rock of Ages”. Special music was: “When I Get Where I'm Going” by Brad Paisley. Honorary pallbearers were the Ridgeway coffee ladies. Pallbearers were: Ryan Dahl, Todd Mestad, Dean Larson, John Dahle, Lloyd Weidow, and Orvin Melaas. Interment was in Lincoln Lutheran Cemetery in rural Ridgeway.

Friends were to call from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Saturday, December 2, 2006 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and an hour prior to the services on Sunday at the church.

Karen, 65, died Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah following a long illness.

Karen Gustine Weidow was born May 24, 1941 in Decorah, IA, the daughter of Alvin and Myrtle (Melaas) Larson. She was baptized June 15, 1941 and confirmed May 15, 1955 at Madison Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway. She graduated from Decorah High School with the Class of 1959.

On April 10, 1965, she married Cletus L. Weidow at Madison Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with three children: Kevin, Kathy and Corey.

 
 

Karen worked at the Ben Franklin Store, Luther College Food Service and the Senior Citizen Meal sites in Decorah and Ridgeway. She also provided childcare in her home. 

She was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway and had volunteered for the Winneshiek Medical Center Auxiliary for many years. She enjoyed going to coffee with her friends. 

She liked to travel and enjoyed playing cards. Karen loved to spend time with her granddaughter Kristen and especially liked going on shopping trips with Kathy and Kristen.

Survivors include her husband of over 41 years, Cletus of Ridgeway; her children: Kevin (Michelle) Weidow of Ridgeway, Kathy (Richard) Dahl of Burr Oak, IA and Corey Weidow of Ridgeway; a granddaughter: Kristen Dahl of Burr Oak; three step grandchildren: Ryan Dahl of Decorah, Shelley Kvam of Decorah and Kyler Kostohryz of Decorah; and one step great granddaughter: Mackenzie Kvam of Decorah.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents and her grandparents.


 

Frances M. Wolfe

WAUMANDEE, WI - A Mass of Christian Burial for Frances M. Wolfe of Waumandee, WI will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, December 6, 2006 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waumandee with Father Michael Klos officiating. Pallbearers are: Craig Wolfe, Dave Wolfe, Mark Wolfe, Rev. Ryan Wolfe, Ben Wolfe, and Bryce Wolfe. Honorary pallbearers are Frances's grandchildren.. Interment will be in St. Boniface Cemetery.

Friends were to call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church where there was a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service and a 7:30 p.m. Rosary. Friends are to also call from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the church.

Frances, 86, died Saturday, December 2, 2006 at St. Michael's Lutheran Home in Fountain City, WI.

Frances Marie Wolfe was born March 7, 1920 in Waumandee, the daughter of Fred and Mary Ann (Knefelkamp) Bohlinger. 

On September 10, 1940 she married Anton Wolfe at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waumandee. Together they farmed three years on the Fountain City Ridge, three years on the Pine Creek Ridge, and thirty-five years in Waumandee. He preceded her in death on December 18, 1981.

 
 

Frances was an excellent gardener with a green thumb, and was still gardening through the summer of 2006. Her greatest joys were spending time with her family and visiting the trout pond developed by her husband, Tony. She was a member of the St. Boniface Altar Society, the Live and Learn Homemaker's Club, and the Waumandee Senior Citizen's Group.

Frances is survived by five sons: Loren (Ruth) Wolfe of Waumandee, Leon (Sondra) Wolfe of Darlington, WI, Anthony (Lucille) Wolfe of Witoka, MN, Cletus (Geri) Wolfe of Colfax, WI, and James (Janis Rockabrand) Wolfe of Cresco, IA; one daughter-in-law: Margaret “Peggy” (Wolfe) Knegendorf of Spring Valley, WI; 15 grandchildren: Craig and Brad Wolfe of Waumandee, Dave of Madison, WI, Chris of Darlington, Aaron of Darlington, Niki Murphy of Wakefield, RI, Carrie of Witoka, Mark of St. Cloud, MN, Ryan of Schofield, WI, Tiffany Rinew of New Berlin, WI, Ben of Cresco, Elizabeth of Iowa, Bryce of Arcadia, Zachary of Winona, MN and Kayla of Menomonie, WI; 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Blanche Ziegler of Fountain City, Viola Kochenderfer of Winona, and Sister Imeldine Bohlinger of Campbellsport, WI; and one brother: Lyle (Mary Jane) Bohlinger of Fountain City.

Frances is preceded in death by her husband Tony; her parents; son: Charles; grandson: Marcus; brothers: Wilber and Willard Bohlinger; and sister: Florence Schlesser.


 

Wallace R. Blekeberg

DECORAH - The Service Celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ for Wallace R. Blekeberg of Decorah, IA was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 4, 2006 at Madison Lutheran Church, Decorah with Pastor Phillip Olson and Pastor Ginny Olson officiating. Pallbearers were: Ron Fulsaas, Mark Bosmans, Steve Bosmans, Carlton Kjos, Vince Herman, and Clayton Herman. Interment was in Madison Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, IA.

Schluter - Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, IA handled the arrangements.

Wallace, 80, died Thursday, November 30, 2006 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN following a lingering illness.

Wallace Raymond Blekeberg was born March 14, 1926, on the family farm near Ridgeway, IA, the son of Amund and Olga (Halvorson) Blekeberg. Wallace was baptized on April 11, 1926 and confirmed on May 26, 1941, the last member to be confirmed in Norwegian at the Madison Lutheran Church. Wallace attended country school near his home. He farmed his entire life in Madison Township, where he was a loving caretaker of the land and animals. 

On June 11, 1955, he married Dorothy Marie Hoyt in the Methodist Church in Oelwein, IA. After her death, he married Roberta Moen Melaas on November 5, 1989 at the Lutheran Parsonage in Ridgeway.

Wallace enjoyed his Norwegian heritage and jokes, reading about farming, dancing and listening to all kinds of music and especially his grandchildren. One of the highlights of his life included a trip to Norway, where he visited his ancestor's farm in July of 2002. He also enjoyed listening to “Peace and Power”, when he was unable to attend Sunday services. Wallace was a life-long member of the Madison Lutheran Church.

 
 

Wallace's survivors include his wife, Roberta Blekeberg of Decorah; two daughters: Donna (Paul) Bosmans of Brooklyn Center, MN and Susan (Doug) De Haan of Michigan City, IN; one son: Alan (Michele) Blekeberg of Decorah; three grandsons: Mark and Steven Bosmans and Lucas Blekeberg; one granddaughter: Leah Blekeberg; one step-daughter: Lori (Robert) Schutte of Mabel, MN; two step-sons: Doug (Kirsten) Melaas of Belle Plaine, MN and Eric Melaas of Cresco; nine step-grandchildren: Lindsey, Levi and Lacey Spalla; Ryly Patterson; Sonja and Ingrid Melaas; Lydia, Becky and Mitchel Melaas; one brother: Orrin (Helen) Blekeberg, Ridgeway;  two nephews: Vince (Barb) Herman and Clayton (Sherri) Herman; and one niece: Viann (Gene) Moritz. 

Wallace was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife: Dorothy on July 22, 1988; one daughter: Jane Blekeberg on January 12, 1979; two sisters: Hazel (Vernon) Herman in 1990 and Marcella (Orville) Smorstad in 1997.


 

Myrna C. Wagner

RIDGEWAY - A Mass of Christian Burial for Myrna C. Wagner of Ridgeway, IA was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 4, 2006 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Lectors were Cindy Frana, Anne Williams, and Janice Balk. Offertory gifts were carried by Myrna's sisters: Shirley, JoAnn, Charlene, Connie, and Nancy. Organist was Doris Thompson, soloist was Dan Silhacek, violinist was Nori Hadley, and the St. Wenceslaus choir sang, “Here I Am, Lord”, “One Bread, One Body”, “Let There Be Peace on Earth”, “Hail Mary Gentle Woman”, “Going Home”, “On Eagle's Wings”. Pallbearers were: Ted Frana, Dan Miner, Roy Kraninger, Jim Wagner, Steve McGrane, and Konnie Verlsteffen. Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in Spillville.

Balik Funeral Home in Spillville, IA handled the arrangements.

Myrna, 66, died Friday, December 1, 2006 at her home after a courageous battle against cancer.

Myrna Catherine Wagner was born on November 21, 1940 in Elma, IA, the daughter of Joseph and Helen (Kohles) Sullivan. Myrna was raised on a farm outside of Elma where she graduated from Immaculate Conception High School. After graduation she worked as a Nurses Aide at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN in the polio ward. She later moved to Waterloo, IA and attended Young's School of Beauty where she earned her Cosmetology Diploma.

In 1964, Myrna married Robert (Bob) Corrick of Elma, IA. They had two children together, Brenda and Brett.

Myrna, Brenda and Brett moved to Cedar Falls in 1980, where Myrna worked at the University of Northern Iowa.

 
 

Myrna married Calvin (Rick) Wagner on December 22, 1984 in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA. She then attended NITI and obtained a Business Management-Computer Technology Degree. Together they farmed until 2001, when they moved to Ridgeway. Myrna and Rick enjoyed dancing, maintaining the yard, and spending time with family and friends.

Myrna's greatest joy in life was her family. She always said that her family was what kept her going in life. Her grandchildren Katelyn, Michala and Wyatt especially brought her tremendous happiness. She enjoyed genealogy, baking cookies, photography, crocheting, watching TV and visiting with family and friends.

Survivors include her husband: Calvin (Rick) Wagner of Ridgeway, IA; children: Brenda (Ivan) Hackman of Roberts, WI; Brett Corrick of Urbandale, IA; grandchildren: Katelyn Elizabeth, Michala Rose and Wyatt Joseph Hackman of Roberts, WI; sisters: Shirley (McGrane) Daleske of Eldora, IA, JoAnn Bork of Des Moines, IA, Charlene (John) Tull of Lacey, WA, Connie (Garry) Kraninger of Independence, IA, and Nancy (Tim) Gibbons, of Mason City, IA; four brother-in-laws: Darrell (JoAnn) Wagner of Calmar, IA; Jim (Nancy) Wagner of Cedar Rapids, IA; Randy (Cheryl) Wagner of Ft. Atkinson, IA and Denis Reicks of Cresco, IA; two sister-in-laws: Jeanne (Konnie) Verlsteffen of Coral Springs, FL and Janice Balk of Waucoma, IA; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

    Myrna was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Helen Sullivan; father and mother-in-law: Edward and Gladys Wagner; brother-in-laws: Helmut Bork, Earl McGrane, Elvin Daleske and Mark Balk; and sister-in-law Judy Riecks.

NORTHFIELD, MN - A Mass of the Angels for Augustus Michael Kuennen was held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 30, 2006 at Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph Worship Center in Cresco. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Augustus Michael Kuennen was silently born into the loving arms of Jesus at 1:23 a.m. on Friday, November 24, 2006 at Northfield Hospital.

Survivors are his parents: Deanna (Less) Kuennen and Allyn Kuennen of Northfield, MN; grandparents: James and Donna Kuennen of Cresco and Mike and Ruth Ann Less of Atkins; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was baptized into the Catholic faith by Father Denny Dempsey of St. Dominics Church.

Augustus was preceded in death by his sister Hope, who passed from this earth on December 27, 2005.

Augustus had his mothers ears, his fathers lips and all of our unconditional love. May God hold both of our children's hands and watch over them

Lucille, 91, died Sunday, December 3, 2006 at Hiawatha Care Center in Hiawatha following an extended illness.

Lucille M. Corrick was born January 20, 1915 in Elma, IA, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Silver) Kelly.

In 1938 she married Everett Corrick and they lived in Elma.

 
 

Lucille had owned and operated Lucille's Beauty Shop for many years in Elma. She then worked as a supervisor for Comprehensive Systems in Elma from 1971-1985 before retirement. She moved to Lowden in 1990 and resided there until January of 2006.

She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Toronto and the American Legion Auxiliary in Lowden. She enjoyed playing cards, raising a flower garden and sharing her love of life with others.

She is survived by sons: Robert (Phyllis) of Bettendorf and Thomas (Judy) of Sun Lakes, Arizona; daughters: Michaeleen (Al) Duncan of St.Paul, MN and Debra (Terry) O'Neil of Cedar Rapids; a sister: Myrna Hughes of Cedar Rapids; and eight grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

Lucille was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and three brothers.

LOURDES - Raymond Valvoda, 79, of Lourdes, died Saturday, December 09, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 13 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes with Reverend Ray Atwood celebrating the Mass. Theresa Burke will be the organist and will accompany the Our Lady of Lourdes Church Choir. Joe Thraenert will be the lector and presenting the offertory gifts will be Scott, Jaclyn and Chad Valvoda. Marge Ludwig will be the eucharistic minister and Ray's wife and children will place the pall.

Burial will be in the church cemetery with Roger Nibaur, Bob Flaherty, Tom Flaherty, Francis Shatek, Bill Chihak , and Steve Dvorak serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers will be Joe and Shirley Praska, Bill and Sharon Zweibohmer, Fay and Bernice Freidhof, and Lynn and Delores Schwade.

Friends may call from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma where there will be a 4:00 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary and 7:00 p.m. Parish Scripture Service. Visitation will also be an hour prior to services at the church.

Raymond Rayfield Valvoda was born July 4, 1927, on the family farm East of Elma, the son of Lewis and Barbara (Haskovec) Valvoda. He attended country school near his family's home and went on to graduate from the Elma Public School in 1944. After his graduation, Ray began his lifelong farming career. On October 5, 1949, he was united in marriage to Mary Chihak at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Following their marriage the couple resided on his parent's farm where they farmed and raised their family. In 1983, they moved to Lourdes and he continued to help his son on the farm.

In his early years Ray enjoyed going snowmobiling, and later he enjoyed going fishing, playing cards and traveling. Ray especially enjoyed their beagle, Rusty.

 
 

He was a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 4144 of Elma.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary; three children Rosemary Valvoda, Castle Rock, CO, Beverly Valvoda, Aurora, CO, and Ron (Nancy) Valvoda, Elma; three grandchildren, Chad Valvoda, Mason City, Jaclyn Valvoda, Mason City, and Scott Valvoda, Elma; a brother, Art Valvoda, Elma, and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

BOISE, ID - Sharon Ann Allen, 64, Boise, ID, died suddenly on Sunday, November 26, 2006 in Huatulco, Mexico while on a cruise of the Panama Canal with her husband, Gary and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 4 at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Boise.

Burial was at Cloverdale Memorial Park.

Services were under the direction of Cloverdale Funeral Home.

Sharon was born in Buhl, Idaho on September 5, 1942 to Trusten and Viola Probasco. She graduated from Highland High School in Salt Lake City in 1960 and attended Linfield College, McMinville, OR. She married Gary Allen on August 26, 1988 in Boise. Sharon worked as a legal secretary for nearly 20 years, retiring this past September from Moore and Baskin.

Surviving are her husband, Gary, Boise, ID; a daughter, Debbie (Gerry) Arvizu, Boise; a son, David (Diana) Annin, Chicago, IL; two grandsons; two granddaughters; a stepdaughter, Danielle (RJ) Whitsitt, Meridian, ID; a sister, Patty (William) Mark, Portland, OR; mother-in-law, Thelma Allen, New Hampton; brothers-in-law, Dean (Monica) Allen, Red Bluff, CA, Darwin (Debra) Allen, Ionia and Brian (Julie) Allen, New Hampton; sister-in-law, Karen Gebel, Ottawa, KS.

Lucille Cresentia (Eischeid) Jenn was born on September 24, 1915, in North Washington, Iowa, the daughter of John and Susan (Rausch) Eischeid. She was baptized and confirmed at the Immaculate Conception Church in North Washington.

Lucille attended the Immaculate Conception school in North Washington until her mother's death in 1930, when she left school to help her father care for her siblings. She married John Jenn on November 9, 1946, at the Immaculate Conception Church.

 
 

While living in North Washington, Lucille was active in her parish, enjoyed bowling, and helped as a poll worker for many years. She moved to New Hampton after her husband passed away in 1985, and later to Iowa City where she was a resident of Emerson Point Assisted Living. She enjoyed family gatherings, a good game of cards, and baked wonderful apple pies, sugar cookies, and chocolate cakes.

Survived by two sons, John of Britt and Mike (Barb), Coralville; a sister, Rita Ungs, Cedar Rapids; two sisters-in-law, Rosie Eischeid, New Hampton and Mary Eischeid, Lock Haven, PA; five grandchildren, Steve, Laurel, Kristin, Katie, and Beth; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers Ralph, Howard, and Raymond; a sister-in-law Lavonne; two brothers-in-law, Norbert Marbach and Donald Ungs; and a grandson, Paul.

Bruce, 64, died Sunday, December 17, 2006 at Regional Health Services of Howard County Iowa following a short illness.

Bruce F. Chailquist was born in Minneapolis, MN on November 16, 1942. He graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1960 and received his B.S. and M.S. from St. Cloud State College in Minneapolis.

Bruce married Susan (Rostamo) Chailquist in August 1966 and moved to Cresco, IA. He taught business education courses at Crestwood High School until retirement in 1999.

 
 

He is survived by his wife Susan of Cresco; two daughters: Lee (Cletus) Kral of Swisher and Lynn (Tom) Colsch from Caledonia, MN; and four grandchildren.

He had been employed at Comprehensive Systems in Charles City and the former Chickasaw County Home. Clinton enjoyed his trips to Camp Courageous for many years with his brother, Levi. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Levi Patrie, New Hampton and LaVern (Betty) Patrie, New Hartford. Two sisters-in-law; Phyllis Patrie, New Hampton and Geneva Patrie, Charles City. Many nieces and nephews.

Joan, 66, died Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Joan Ann Bowker was born June 8, 1940 in Long Branch, NY, the daughter of Albert and Mildred (Morris) Hawley. She received her education in New York and worked at various jobs. She was presently a school bus aide before moving to Cresco to be near family.

On January 13, 1976 she married Elwood Bowker in Manchester, NJ. He died on December 24, 1984.

 
 

She was a life member of the Whiting Fire Company Auxiliary. Her hobbies included playing Bingo, and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children: Selmer “Junior” (Patricia) Engan of Columbia, SC, Geraldine (Henry) Richards of Greenbrier, AR, and Barbara (Leonard) Wharton of Cresco; seven grandchildren: Sharon, Tiffany, Dana, Joseph, Shaun, Kyle and Elwood; one brother: Edward Hawley of Jackson, NJ; three sisters: Gloria Hankins and Shirley Ford, both of Lake Hurst, NJ, and Wanda Hurley of Toms River, NJ.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; and three sisters: Thelma Parker, Florence Hawley, and Helen Kennedy.

FORT ATKINSON - Mary Barloon, age 90, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, died on Friday, December 15, 2006, at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, Iowa, following a short illness.

Mass of Christian Burial was 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 18 at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson with Rev. David Beckman officiating. Jeanette Dietzenbach was the organist and accompanied St. John's Choir singing “Be Not Afraid”, “Hail Mary, Gentle Woman”, “Let There be Peace on Earth”, “We Remember”, “All That I Am”, and “On Eagle's Wings”. Curt and Linda Gjere presented special music “In the Garden”. Lectors were John Barloon and Linus Barloon. Offertory gifts were presented by Eleanore Martin, Mary Anne Hoey, Vincent Barloon and Joanne Olson. All of Mary's grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren were honorary casketbearers. Loren Turner, Kathy Iverson, Karen Engebretson, Mark Skretta, Gary Kuhn and Shawn Leighton served as casketbearers.

Interment was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Fort Atkinson.

Arrangements were made by Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson.

Mary Therese (Becvar) Barloon was born on March 16, 1916, the daughter of Jacob and Mary (Peeper) Becvar in Calmar, IA. Mary attended St. Aloysius and St. Francis de Sales Catholic Schools, graduating in 1929. She then graduated from Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, IA, in 1931, majoring in music. Mary then taught in Alta Vista and in the Calmar areas. She married Adolph Barloon on November 7, 1939 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. Together they farmed the Barloon family farm near Fort Atkinson, where they raised their six children. They moved into Fort Atkinson in 1968 and Mary taught piano, organ, guitar and violin lessons. Mary loved music and served as the organist at St. John's Catholic Church for many years, retiring in the 1998. She enjoyed playing cards, baking and cooking for all her family members and spending time with them. Mary served as a 4-H Leader and was a member of St. John's Catholic Church; the American Legion Auxiliary, where she served as president; Calmar and Fort Atkinson Senior Citizen's groups. She also received the Governor's Volunteer of the Year Award.

MASON CITY - A Memorial Mass for Clarence F. Tass of Mason City will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 22, 2006 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City with Reverend Harry H. Koelker officiating. Inurnment will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City with military graveside honors by members of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Clarence, 92, died Friday, December 8, 2006 at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Clarence Francis Tass, was born on March 4, 1914, in Hinckley, MN, the son of Charles and Dora (Klein) Tass. He attended and received his education in the Cresco Community School, graduating from Cresco High School in 1933. In the fall of 1933, Clarence moved to Arizona to work at the Parker Dam in Parker, AZ. In the spring of 1934, he moved to Wyoming to work on Alcova Dam near Casper, and on the Klondike Ranch near Buffalo, WY. He then enlisted in the US Army/Air Force in 1941, at Ft. Logan, CO, and served overseas during World War II, and in the battles of Guadalcanal, Northern Solomon's, and New Guinea, with the 40th Air Service Squadron, 29th Air Service Group, and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Meritorious service unit plaque, World War II Victory Medal, and the American Defense Service Medal. Clarence was honorably discharged on October 31, 1945. After the war, Clarence moved to Waterloo, IA, to work for the Waterloo Bus station and for John Deere until 1948. 

Clarence moved to Charles City and was united in marriage to Evelyn Ritter on June 24, 1948. After their marriage they lived in Charles City until 1950, when they moved to Mason City. Clarence began working for the Mason City Public Transit (Bus Barn) until 1952 when he then went to work for Gibbs Cook Caterpillar Company. Clarence worked for Gibbs-Cook for 33 years until he retired in 1985. Clarence and Evelyn celebrated 50 years of marriage in 1998. 

 
 

He enjoyed gardening, fishing and fixing things-he was known as “Mr. Fix It”. His great love and enjoyment was his family, children, and grandchildren.

He attended St. Joseph Catholic Church; he was a 3rd degree Knights of Columbus member, and a member of the American Legion in Mason City. 

Left to cherish his memory are his children: David Tass and his wife Mary Martha of Mason City, Mary Jo (Tass) Wells and her husband Gary of Phoenix, Arizona, Charles Tass of Colorado Springs, CO, and Steven Tass and his wife Cristy of Mason City; five grandchildren: Peter Tass and his wife Jean of Houston, TX, Chris Wells and Nicole Wells of Phoenix, AZ, and Cory and Joey Tass of Mason City; as well as other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife; Evelyn; grandson: Benjamin Guy Tass; his parents; his brothers: Leo Tass, Joe Tass, and Louie Tass; and his sister: Julia (Tass) Johnson.

Avis, 82, died Thursday, December 14, 2006 at the Patty Elwood Center in rural Cresco.

Avis A. Ishman was born January 24, 1924, the daughter of Jesse and Eva Allgood and was the youngest of five children. She graduated from Grundy Center School and was a school teacher.

She married Donald Sherman Ishman on April 14, 1945. She touched many people's lives in a positive way, as a teacher, co-worker, supervisor, volunteer, wife, mother and a grandmother. She will be missed by all who knew her and loved her.

She is survived by a son: Bruce (Nicki) Ishman of Cresco; two daughters: Linda Spieker of Cresco, and Donna (Larry) Fredrickson of New Hope, MN: six grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and one sister: Jessie (Harry) Cooley of Morrison, IA.

 
 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don; two sisters: Pauline McFarland and Vera Brandt: and two brothers: Sam and William Allgood.

Loras, 64, died Thursday, December 14, 2006 at his home in Mercer, WI.

Loras William Stejskal was born on February 27, 1942 in Cresco, IA, the son of William F. and Clara M. (Urban) Stejskal. He grew up in Cresco and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1960. Following his graduation, he started working for the Oliver Tractor Company later White Motor Co. in Charles City. When the plant closed in Charles City, he worked for John Deere Tractor Co. in Waterloo. He also operated a service station in Cresco. He moved to Lac du Flambeau, WI where he did various jobs of welding for the State Transportation Dept. and many other businesses.

In the late 1980's he was married at Lac du Flambeau and in the later three years, he moved to Mercer.

 
 

Loras is survived by his brothers and sisters: Joan Wicks of Cresco, Clare Stejskal of Waverly, Thomas of Cedar Rapids, John (Leslee) of Newton, and Mary Ann Stejskal of Decorah; five step children; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents; brother-in-law: Leonard Wicks; and nephews: Paul Wicks and Irvin “Skip” Stearns.

Margaret, 68, died Sunday, December 17, 2006 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Marge was born August 13, 1938 in Allamakee County, IA, the daughter of Larry and Mary (O'Brien) Schultz. In 1950 she was adopted by Vincent and Evelyn Kreitinger. She graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in Des Moines, also DMACC and the University of Iowa. 

In 1981 she married Howard Holdefer in Colfax. She retired from HyVee and spent her time with needle work, cooking and her family.

 
 

Marge is survived by her husband Howard; two sons: Richard and Jim Dunn of Cresco; two daughters: Barb Miskimins of Altoona and Kathy Lamb of Mingo; a daughter-in-law: Becky Dunn; a step-son: Tony Holdefer and his wife Missy; her grandchildren: Teresa, Stephanie, Justin, Kara, Jeffery, Paul, Michael, Jeremy, Brittany, T.J., and Brooklyn; a sister and brother-in-law: Judy and Clem Smith of Cresco; and a brother: Terry Hall of Colorado; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Alfred, 85, died Saturday, December 8, 2006 at his home with his family by his side.

Alfred H. Knode was born April 26, 1921 in Chester, IA, the son of Alva and Freda Knode. He attended schools in Oakdale Twp. through the eighth grade. In 1942 he joined the Army Air Corp and was based in Spokane WA. He was later stationed in Sunningdale, England for two years during World War II and also one year in France and Germany.

After returning to England, he married Constance Rance on August 23, 1945 in The Church of England. After Alfred was discharged from the Army, they made their home on a farm near Chester. Three children were born to this union.

 
 

Alfred attended GI school for two years, studying farm management. He farmed in the Chester area for the majority of his life, and also worked at Oliver/White Farm Equipment in Charles City retiring in 1983.

Alfred enjoyed 10 years of square dancing with the Tender Foots out of Alta Vista and before ill health, Alfred and his wife spent many winters traveling in their motor home visiting family and friends.

Alfred is survived by his wife Connie of LeRoy; one son: Alvin Knode (finance Cheryl Julius) of Chester; one daughter: Linda (Darryl) Chandler of Shingle Springs, CA; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one sister: Marie (RoyJohn) Duffey of Mesa, AZ; and one brother: George (Shirley) Knode of LeRoy; also many nieces and nephews.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; one son: Robert; a daughter-in-law: Patricia A. Knode; and two brothers: Glen and Paul.

George, 53, died Friday, December 8, 2006 at Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco after suffering a heart attack at home.

George Raymond Clynch was born September 2, 1953, the son of Raymond and Mayme (Koudelka) Clynch. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1971, took a course at Ames on electronics and became a self-made electronics repairman and salesman. He set up sound systems at various fairs and for many celebrations.

George was a member of the Howard County Fair Board, the Knights of Columbus, and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was a life long member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. He enjoyed helping at the Fair, the Moo-Mobile, and cotton candy. He loved horses, going on cruises and visiting with his many friends. George also had his realtor licenses.

George is survived by his special friend and associate: Kennie Waller of Cresco; two sisters: Catherine (Neil) Kappes and Betty (Louis) Torkelson, both of Elma; and nieces and nephews.

 
 

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister: Lorraine Daley.


 

Daniel F. Mracek

Daniel, 81, died Monday, December 4, 2006 at Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco, IA after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Daniel Francis Mracek was born October 3, 1925 in Howard County, near Protivin, the son of Frank Joseph and Regina Margaret (Riha) Mracek. He grew up on the family farm and lived there until his retirement in 1992. He moved to Cresco in 2000. Up until that time, he was a member of the Holy Trinity Church in Protivin. When they moved to Cresco, they joined the Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center.

Dan received his education in the country school. Following his education, he remained on the farm to take care of the land.

On June 6, 1950, he married Darlene Leuenberger at St. Mary's Church in New Hampton. They became the parents of six children.

 
 

Dan was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and when able, was very active in his church activities. He enjoyed traveling, dancing, going on bus tours, loved car races and riding his bike and scooter. He especially enjoyed visiting his family and attending his grandchildren's activities. This was the most important part of his life.

Daniel is survived by his children: Diane (Gerald) Pecinovsky of Newton, Connie Mracek of Neenah, WI, Dennis (Donna) of Protivin, Kathy (Steve) McCarville of Cresco, Jane (Pete) Heying of Cedar Rapids, and Tom (Laura) of Kasson, MN; 15 grandchildren: Jill, Julie and Eric Pecinovsky; Jeff Mracek, Aimee Wesley, and Amanda Jirak; Ryan, Kelly, Kyle, and Kimberly McCarville; Adam, Nicholas and Alex Heying; Matthew and Jonathan Mracek; two great-granddaughters: Simone Wesley and Macy Jane Mracek; and one sister: Evelyn Kostohryz of Protivin.

Daniel was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Darlene on September 16, 2003; and one sister: Darlene in infancy.

Visitation was held Saturday, December 9, 2006 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home in Ripon. Visitation continued on Sunday, December 10 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the Federated Church in Green Lake.

Dorothy, 79, died Wednesday, December 6, 2006 in her daughter's home in Green Lake, WI surrounded by family and friends.

Dorothy Elaine Fagerburg was born October 23, 1927 in Osage the daughter of Morris Palmer and Vera (Cole) Williams. She graduated from Osage High School in 1945. She then studied at Sioux Falls College (now The University of Sioux Falls) where she met the man she would marry.

While attending Sioux Falls College (SFC) she toured with the SFC Choir, was a sorority member of Pi Kappa Delta, Roister Doister, Delta Psi Omega and Quapaw. Dottie was awarded SFC's “Purple Feather,” the highest award for outstanding students, and the SFC Senior Student Woman Representative of Sioux Falls College award. She participated in Oratory, Extemporaneous speech and debate. She was a member of the American Baptist World Wide Guild (WWG), and was honored to be named to Who's Who of College students. She was a member of the Student Senate and was the Student Association VP, was actively involved in the SFC newspaper and yearbook. She was chosen by the student body to be the Tepee Day Attendant. She graduated from SFC in June of 1949 where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in Christian Education and Speech.

 
 

On June 12, 1949 she married Frank Phillip Fagerburg of Bloomington, IL at the First Baptist Church of Osage then moved to Berkeley, CA where Frank attended Berkeley Baptist Divinity School (now The Seminary of the West). Dottie worked for the Council of Churches in San Francisco and as secretary of the First Baptist Church (FBC) of Oakland until giving birth to their first son Frank Leslie in 1951. They directed the youth program at FBC in Oakland, then moved to Vallejo where Frank was Youth Director at First Baptist Church. Son, Stephen George, was born in 1953. After Frank's ordination they returned to Sioux Falls where Frank was Assistant Pastor and Dottie was Director of Christian Education at the First Baptist Church of Sioux Falls.

In 1955 they moved to Trent, SD where Frank pastored the Trent Baptist Church and West Baptist Church of Coleman. Daughter Pamela Jo was born that same year and son Mark Daniel was born in 1959.

Alongside her husband, Dottie faithfully and lovingly continued to serve other American Baptist Churches including The First Baptist Church of Churdan, The Federated Church of Green Lake, WI, and The First Baptist Church of Red Oak. Dottie and Frank moved to Waupaca, WI where Frank served as Caretaker for two years at Camp Tamarack, the Wisconsin American Baptist Church state campgrounds. They then “retired” to their son Frank's home in Iola, WI, although they continued to minister in many churches. God called them back to active ministry to serve at the First Baptist Church of Cresco where they served for seven years until they officially retired in 2001. They returned to Green Lake where they most recently were members of The Federated Church of Green Lake.

Dottie's service to God through these churches included Christian Educatin Director, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher, Bible Study leader, Choir Director, Choir Member, Women's Fellowship membr as well as serving on countless committees. She was a great organizer and “ideas” person when planning events in the church. She was instrumental in starting “The Live-Aloners” at The Federated Church, a group for those who had lost spouses or had never married, who she and Frank invited to their home for monthly dinners and fellowship.

Over the years her community involvement has been varied. She has served as School Board President and Booster Club President and was active in community musical theatre. She loved attending all school activities her children were involved in - choral and band concerts and competitions, school plays, forensics competitions, and sports events to name a few.

She enjoyed working a number of years at The American Baptist Assembly where she had the opportunity to see many close friends from college, seminary and other churches.

Her children learned from her the love of music, love of family and friends, and especially the importance of faith. She was a remarkable encourager to thousands and truly showed the importance of edifying one another. Over the years Dottie and Frank have made thousands of telephone calls to sing “Happy Birthday” to those in their church and community. She is lovingly referred to as “the birthday lady” by many.

Dottie is survived by her husband The Reverend Frank P. Fagerburg of Ripon; son: Frank (Nancy Schnackel) of Iola, WI, son: Steve (Marcia McNutt) of Fort Dodge, daughter: Pam (and her fiancé Gordon Farrell) of Green Lake, and son: Mark (Susan Tornow) of Columbus, WI; grandchildren: Carrie Joy of Iowa State University, Ames, Brian Philip James of Fort Dodge, Kindra Noel of Grandview College in Des Moines, Taylor Alyse of Columbus, WI, and Graham Parker of Columbus, WI; sisters: Mary Williams and Jean Clausen of Osage; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Keith and Dean.

Mae Klossowsky
 

 

NEW HAMPTON - Mae Klossowsky, 100, of Waverly, formerly of New Hampton, died Saturday, December 23, 2006, at her son's home in Waverly.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Thursday, December 28 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton with Reverend Kevin Frey and Reverend Joel Dahlen officiating. Edith Kolthoff will be the organist and Denise Bitler will sing "The Lord's Prayer."

Burial will be in the New Hampton Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton and an hour prior to services at the church.

Mae Agnes Klossowsky was born December 3, 1906, at New Hampton, IA, the daughter of William and Lillian (Edgar) Wilson. She received her education in New Hampton and was a graduate of the New Hampton High School. After her graduation, Mae worked at Schmidt's Millinery Shop where she finished making the hats and later at Kelson's Variety Store for several years. On October 24, 1926, she was united in marriage to Clarence Klossowsky at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Following their marriage the couple resided in New Hampton until moving to a farm near New Hampton. After her husband's death on December 23, 1964, Mae moved to her home in New Hampton on South Chestnut. While she was in New Hampton she was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the WELCA serving on the Lydia Circle. In 1996 Mae moved to Waverly and went to live with her son and daughter-in-law in 1998. On December 3, 2006 Mae celebrated her 100th Birthday.

She enjoyed reading, sewing, quilting, needlework, gardening, cooking and spending time with her family.

 
 

Survivors include her son Harold (Patricia) Klossowsky of Waverly; two granddaughters Denise (Bob) Bitler of Albany, IL and Michelle Klossowsky of Arvada, CO; two great grandchildren Paul and Scott Hardison; three great great grandchildren Brooklyn, Blake and Brianna Hardison; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her parents, husband Clarence, granddaughter Valerie Klossowsky; 6 sisters Helen Kahn, Grace Hauser, Mildred Klossowsky, Flossie Wilson and two sisters in infancy; three brothers Glen “Bud” Wilson, James Wilson, and Charles Wilson.

Bruce F. Chailquist was born in Minneapolis, MN on November 16, 1942. He graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1960 and received his B.S. and M.S. from St. Cloud State College in Minneapolis.

Bruce married Susan (Rostamo) Chailquist in August 1966 and moved to Cresco, IA. He taught business education courses at Crestwood High School until retirement in 1999.

Her granddaughters, Denise Sinnwell, Diane Murphy, Debbie Rosendahl, Shelly Speltz and Lori Eischeid will place the pall on her casket. The offertory gifts will be presented by Bill and Denise Sinnwell. Marlys Sinnwell will be the lector. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton, with Mike Finnegan, Robert Finnegan, Bill Sinnwell, Terry Rosendahl, Mark Murphy, Tony Eischeid, Chris Speltz and Mitchell Sinnwell as pallbearers. Nina was born September 12, 1916, in Vesper, WI, the daughter of Arthur and Mary (Hamel) Bean. She had five brothers and four sisters. Nina graduated from the Lincoln High School, Wisconsin Rapids, WI, class of 1934. On September 14, 1940, at St. James Catholic Church, Vesper, WI, she married Cornell Finnegan. To this union four sons were born. For thirty-five years she worked for Kelso Produce, A & P Egg Plant and Hillandale Farms in New Hampton. Nina enjoyed playing cards and her activities with the Rosary Society and American Legion Auxiliary. Especially important to her were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her three sons, Chet (Doris) Finnegan, Larry (Jane) Finnegan all of New Hampton and Tom (Linda) Finnegan of Tuscon, AZ; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Inez Neufeld of Wisconsin Rapids, WI. Preceded in death by her parents; her husband ‘Corny' on October 7, 1998; one son, Robert Finnegan on July 24, 1971; five brothers and three sisters.


 

Joan A. Bowker

CRESCO - Funeral services for Joan A. Bowker of Cresco, formerly of Whiting, NJ, will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at the Carmona-Bolen Funeral Home in Whiting, NJ. Interment will be in Whiting Memorial Park.

Visitation was held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, December 19 at the Carmona-Bolen Funeral Home.

Joan, 66, died Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Joan Ann Bowker was born June 8, 1940 in Long Branch, NY, the daughter of Albert and Mildred (Morris) Hawley. She received her education in New York and worked at various jobs. She was presently a school bus aide before moving to Cresco to be near family.

On January 13, 1976 she married Elwood Bowker in Manchester, NJ. He died on December 24, 1984.

 
 

She was a life member of the Whiting Fire Company Auxiliary. Her hobbies included playing Bingo, and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children: Selmer “Junior” (Patricia) Engan of Columbia, SC, Geraldine (Henry) Richards of Greenbrier, AR, and Barbara (Leonard) Wharton of Cresco; seven grandchildren: Sharon, Tiffany, Dana, Joseph, Shaun, Kyle and Elwood; one brother: Edward Hawley of Jackson, NJ; three sisters: Gloria Hankins and Shirley Ford, both of Lake Hurst, NJ, and Wanda Hurley of Toms River, NJ.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; and three sisters: Thelma Parker, Florence Hawley, and Helen Kennedy.

CLEAR LAKE - Cheryl L. Hanson, 70, of 1004 5th Ave S, Clear Lake, IA, passed away Wednesday December 20, 2006 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.  Memorial services will be held 1:30 P.M. Wednesday December 27, 2006 at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. 4th St, Clear Lake with Reverend Dean Hess officiating.

Private inurnment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.  Visiting with family will be one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Clear Lake Public Library Foundation in Cheryl's name.

Cheryl was born March 10, 1936, the daughter of Julius T. “Ted” and Marie (Benz) Willadsen in New Hampton, IA.  Cheryl graduated from New Hampton High School in 1954.  She attended and graduated from A.I.B. Institute in Des Moines, IA. She moved to Mason City and worked where she met her husband David and was married.  She later worked in the office of a contractor in Clear Lake, office of Dr's Larson and Powell and later for Mason City Clinic until she retired in 2001. Cheryl also worked part time for the Clear Lake Library after her retirement.  She was a board member of Clear Lake Library and North Central Regional Library. Cheryl enjoyed knitting, reading, genealogy, playing computer games, WWII and Western movies on DVD. Cheryl was a member of the Clear Lake Zion Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her three children, Mark and Keith Hanson, Clear Lake and Julie Hanson of Ames; several nieces and nephews and  sisters-in-law, Lou Willadsen, Merritt Island, FLorida, Betty Blick, Sultan, Washington, Jo Ellen Carpenter, Clear Lake, Joyce Stille, Swaledale, and Bonnie Hanson, Clarksville, Georgia.

Preceded in death by her parents; husband David, two brothers Roger and Lorne Willadsen and sister-in-law Joyce Willadsen.

Nikki was born November 11, 1997, in Waterloo, the daughter of William and Vickie (Schnieder) Beaulieau. She was currently in the third grade at the Cross Road Academy in Decorah. Nikki loved helping her family, riding bike, babies, horses, dogs and the walking trail. She was always very friendly to those she met as well as being proud of being on the honor roll. She enjoyed spending time with Marlowe Steege. Her creativity and the way she brought joy to any room will be missed by her family.

Survivors include her father, Bill Beaulieau, Fredericksburg; her mother, Vickie Beaulieau (Steve Bonefas), Independence; one brother, B.J. Beaulieau, Fredericksburg; Aunt, Shirley Beaulieau, Tripoli, paternal grandfather, Elmer Beaulieu, Fredericksburg; maternal grandmother, Mary (Bub) Galer, Oelwein; maternal grandfather, Bernard Schnieder, Hazel Green, WI; maternal great-grandparents, Art and Betty Necker, Archer, FL; maternal grandmother, May Berry, Waterloo; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

CRESCO - Funeral services for Avis A. Ishman of Cresco were held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2006 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, IA handled the arrangements.

Avis, 82, died Thursday, December 14, 2006 at the Patty Elwood Center in rural Cresco.

Avis A. Ishman was born January 24, 1924, the daughter of Jesse and Eva Allgood and was the youngest of five children. She graduated from Grundy Center School and was a school teacher.

She married Donald Sherman Ishman on April 14, 1945. She touched many people's lives in a positive way, as a teacher, co-worker, supervisor, volunteer, wife, mother and a grandmother. She will be missed by all who knew her and loved her.

She is survived by a son: Bruce (Nicki) Ishman of Cresco; two daughters: Linda Spieker of Cresco, and Donna (Larry) Fredrickson of New Hope, MN: six grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and one sister: Jessie (Harry) Cooley of Morrison, IA.

 
 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don; two sisters: Pauline McFarland and Vera Brandt: and two brothers: Sam and William Allgood.

ALTA VISTA - Tom Mahoney, 76, of Alta Vista, died Sunday, December 17, 2006 at his home in Alta Vista.

Mass of Christian Burial was held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 20 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista with Reverend Ray Atwood celebrating the Mass. Theresa Burke was the organist and accompanied the St. Bernard Church Choir and vocalists Mike Klein, Jim Kinsey, Amber Wiebusch, and Marian Mahoney singing “Soon and Very Soon”, “Amazing Grace”, “How Great Thou Art”, “On Eagles Wings”, “Be Not Afraid” and “Jesus Remember Me”. Dawn Klein was the lector and Deborah Kinsey read a poem. Presenting the offertory gifts were Tim and Dennis Mahoney. The eucharistic minister was Daniel Mahoney.

Friends called from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma where there was a 4:00 p.m. combined Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters Rosary and a 7:30 p.m. Parish Scripture Service. Visitation was also an hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Interment with Military Honors was in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista with Tom's grandsons: Thomas Moran, Benjamin Klein, Michael Mahoney, Joseph Mahoney, Brady Mahoney and Brian Mahoney serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers were Tom's granddaughters: Angie Pecinovsky, Maria Moran, Katie Mahoney, Becky Mahoney, and Erica Mahoney.

Military honors will be accorded by the Alta Vista VFW Paul Johann Post 4069.

Thomas Lloyd Mahoney was born August 4, 1930, at Alta Vista, IA, the son of Lloyd and Angela (Keefe) Mahoney. He received his education at St. Williams Catholic School in Alta Vista, graduating in 1948. Following his high school graduation he went on to further his education at the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN and Loras College in Dubuque, IA. After college, Tom returned to Alta Vista and joined his father in the family business, Mahoney Oil Company. On June 16, 1951, he was united in marriage to Nancy White at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista. After their marriage the couple remained in Alta Vista where they have been lifelong residents. On January 10, 1952, Tom was drafted in to the US Army and served as a Company Clerk during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on October 9, 1953 and returned to Alta Vista and continued to work at the Mahoney Oil Company. In 1960, Tom along with his brother-in-law John Loes, bought the Mahoney Oil Company from his father and they operated it together until Tom retired in 1986, when John's son Brian joined the business.

 
 

During his retirement years, Tom enjoyed oil painting, boating, family camping trips, going to the cabin in Pine River, MN and wintering in San Diego, CA and Mission, TX. He was a member of the St. Bernard Catholic Church, Paul Johann VFW Post 4069, Knights of Columbus Council 4144, Catholic Order of Forester-St. Joseph Court, Alta Vista Volunteer Fire Department and Alta Vista Commercial Club.

Survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy; five children Deborah (Jim) Kinsey, Cottage Grove, MN, Tim (Marian) Mahoney, Lake City, MN, Dawn (Mike) Klein, Elma, Daniel Mahoney, Alta Vista, and Dennis Mahoney, Woodbury, MN; 11 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters Mary Kay (John) Loes, Alta Vista, and Betty Schulte, Cedar Rapids, and a sister-in-law Connie Mahoney, Independence.

Preceded in death by his parents, son Michael Mahoney, two grandchildren Gregory and Jessie Klein and a brother Jack Mahoney.

NEW HAMPTON - Kay Marie Kuehn was stillborn December 7, 2006 at 8:50 a.m. at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City. She weighed one pound, 10 ounces and was 10 inches long. She was blessed by Rev. Vitols Valainis.

Ella, 100, died Saturday, December 23, 2006 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Ella Albertson was born March 6, 1906, the daughter of Carl and Mabel (Jewell) Blomgren. She was the oldest of 15 children and was raised in Winneshiek County near Cardinal Marsh. She was confirmed on May 18, 1941 in Lincoln Church in rural Ridgeway.

On July 2, 1924 she married Joe Albertson and to this union were born, two daughters: Elnora and Juliet, and three sons: Junior, Jerry, and Gerald. Ella and Joe farmed near Spillville, IA from 1924 until they moved to Ridgeway.

 
 

She enjoyed crocheting, putting puzzles together, flowers, and playing cards and marbles.

She is survived by two daughters: Elnora and Juliet; one son: Jerry (Sandy); a daughter-in-law: Bette; 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 28 great-great- grandchildren; six step grandchildren; eight step great- grandchildren; two step great-great-grandchildren; and five sisters: Florence Anderson, Rose Ratcliff, Mabel Hovden, Liota Hinneman, and Doris Blaess.

Ella was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant son: Junior; a son: Gerald; sisters: Ruth Sue, Cora Eiler, Maude Albertson, Pearl Frisch, Aleda Olson, Opal Ellerman, Josephine Nabolz, Dorothy Eidenschink; one brother: Carl “Buster” Blomgren; two great-grandchildren: Jay Sersland and Nicole Albertson; one great-great-grandchild: Rhett Hovey; and three sons-in-law: Curtis Marlow, Milton Schnitzler, and George Marhoul.

BETTENDORF - Funeral services for SGT. Michael D Smith of Bettendorf will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at St. James Lutheran Church in Bettendorf. Interment will be held in the National Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made for his sons, Elijah and Noah education funds.

Michael, 41, died Monday, December 18, 2006 in Washington, D.C.

Michael D. Smith was born on September 28, 1965 in Iowa City, IA, the son of Inez (Smith) Vidmar.

On September 1, 1996 he married Kristine Mattly in Cresco.

 
 

He proudly served in the United States Army from 1984-1987. He continued serving in the Army Reserves from 1988 until present. He deployed in support of Iraqi Freedom in 2003.

Michael was a member of the Davenport American Legion Post #26, where he was a member of their honor guard.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his sons.

Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife, Kristine and two sons: Elijah and Noah, all of Bettendorf; mother and stepfather: Inez and Victor Vidmar of Colorado Springs, CO; sister: Ishala (Ernie) Griego of Colorado Springs, CO; brother: Mark (Amy) Smith of Washington, D.C.; mother and father-in-law: Jerry and Myrna Mattly of Bettendorf; grandmother: Nellie Smith of Cresco; sister-in-law: Jennifer Mattly of Westport, CT; brother-in-law: Erik (Shayla) Mattly of Bettendorf; nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, many cousins, including a special cousin: Chris (Jeanette) Cotant; and members of the 389th Engineer Battalion, past and present.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather: Reidar Smith; and cousin: Keith Miene.
