Burton Hoffland

Funeral services for Burton "Burt" Hoffland of San Bernardino, CA were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 4 at Highland Avenue Lutheran Church in San Bernardino.

Burt died Wednesday, February 27, 2002.

Burton LaMoyne Hoffland was born April 20, 1925 in Cresco, the son of John and Olena (Landswerk) Hoffland. His parents farmed in the Saude area and he helped on the farm until his mid-twenties. He was the youngest of five children. He finished high school in Cresco, where he played football and baseball. He continued his passion for baseball by pitching for many county league teams.

He joined the Air Force in early 1952. The night before he was to report for duty he met his bride-to-be at his brother Vic's wedding. He took Eleanor Smith to church the next morning and began a courtship through correspondence.

They were married in Portland, OR on November 22, 1952 at the same church in which they had met. The Air Force moved them to Long Beach and Marysville, CA. In 1956 Burt left the Air Force and settled in San Bernardino.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters: Ellen Sabie of Palm Springs and Betty Hoffland of Glendora; one grandson; and one brother: Victor J. of Milwaukee, WI.

Burt was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters: Harriett Peterson, Marjorie Bruns, and Edna Hoffland.

 Doris Meade

 Funeral services for Doris Meade of Iowa City were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 18 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Iowa City with Rev. James Vrba officiating.

Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery. Lensing Funeral Cremation Service handled the arrangements.

Doris, 71, died Wednesday, March 13 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness.

Doris A. Meade was born September 15, 1930 in Iowa City, the daughter of Fred A. and Edith Mary (Cole) Kasper.

On January 8, 1951 she married John D. Meade at St. Wenceslaus Church in Iowa City. She was raised in the North Liberty area and was a 1948 graduate of University High School. She has been a resident of Iowa City since 1951. Prior to marriage she was employed by Northwestern Bell. She and her husband farmed in rural Johnson County.

She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, and Iowa City Women of the Moose. She was an avid Hawkeye fan.

She is survived by her husband John D. of Iowa City; three sons: Lynn of Iowa City, Tim also of Iowa City, and John of Coralville; one daughter: Beverly Jean Meade of Cresco; five grandchildren; and one brother: Fred of Iowa City.

Doris was preceded in death by two grandchildren; and her parents


Kenneth Natvig

Funeral services for Kenneth Natvig were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 15 at the Saude Lutheran Church in Saude with Rev. Kent Dethlefsen officiating.

Interment was in Saude Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Jonathan Natvig, Gregg Dahlke, Larry Benz, Mike Webster, Mike Natvig, Dennis Natvig, Mark Natvig, and Allen Borlaug. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Kenneth, 83, died Monday, March 11 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco of natural causes.

Kenneth O. Natvig was born September 10, 1918 in Howard County, the son of Oscar and Berthilda (Steensland) Natvig. He was baptized and confirmed in the Saude Lutheran Church. He attended rural elementary school at New Oregon #8 in Howard County and graduated from Cresco High School in 1937.

On September 12, 1945 he married Stella Geneva Knutson at the Jerico Lutheran Church. They lived on the family farm and continued farming there until he retired in 1995 and moved to Cresco.

He served for 25 years as a board member of the Tri-County REC. He was a lifelong member of the Saude Lutheran Church where he served on many boards and committees.

He is survived by his wife Stella; three children: Kendall of Webster City, Oakleigh of Cresco, and Sharon Burk of Sacramento, CA; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister: Ann Dahlke of Fairmont, MN.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Merle, who died in infancy.


Marcia Howell

A memorial service for Marcia Howell of Las Vegas, NV were held on Friday, March 15 in the Davis Funeral Home, Las Vegas.

Interment was in Paradise Memorial Cemetery in Las Vegas.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 23 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton with Pastor David Bergstrom and Pastor Kevin Frey officiating. Hugeback Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Marcia, 48, died Sunday, March 10, 2002 at her home of breast cancer.

Marcia Lynn Howell was born March 15, 1953 in New Hampton, the daughter of Reuben and Vernice (Engle) Svendsen. She attended Lawler Public School grades K-3 and Turkey Valley Community School grades 4-12. Marcia was a graduate of Turkey Valley High School in 1971. She then attended and graduated from NIACC in Mason City in 1973. She then moved to Las Vegas.

On December 25, 1980 she married Robert D. Howell. The couple owned and operated several companies. Marcia was vice-president of Action Towig, Inc. of Las Vegas.

She is survived by her husband Robert of Las Vegas; three sons: John, Kristopher, and Bobby, all of Las Vegas; her mother: Vernice Svendsen of Lawler; three sisters: Dianne Blazek of Lawler, Beverly Frey of Mason City, and Mary Ann Esquivel of Las Vegas; and one brother: LeAllyn of Steamboat Springs, CO.

Marcia was preceded in death by her father Reuben on December 24, 1989; and her grandparents.


Don Chyle

Funeral services for Don Chyle of Cresco were held on Tuesday, March 12 at Holy Trinity Church in Protivin with Rev. John Moser officiating.

Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Protivin. Pallbearers were: Edmund Samec, Jim Harms, Gary Swestka, Bob Stika, Doug Pecinovsky, and Tom Lentz. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Don, 79, died Thursday, March 7, 2002 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI.

Don Chyle was born November 19, 1922 in Howard County, between Cresco and Protivin, the son of Wenceslaus and Clara (Komarek) Chyle. He attended Holy Trinity Elementary School and Rudolphinium High School. Following his education, he stayed on the farm helping his parents.

On June 14, 1948 he married Arlene Sobolik in the Holy Trinity Church in Protivin.He lived on the family Century Farm and dairy farmed.

He received the Distinguished Family Dairy Award for Howard County in 1998. He was a long time Farm Bureau member, and served on the Howard County Extensin Board for many years. He was a member of the Protivin Council of the Knights of Columbus.

He enjoyed fishing and doing custom windrowing for people. Because of health reasons, his last three years were spent doing reading and driving short distances.

He is survived by his wife Arlene; one son: Mark of Cresco; and one sister: Evelyn Steffen of Cresco.

Gertrude Wilson

Funeral services for Gertrude Wilson of Cresco were held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19 at the Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were: Dana Wilson, Todd Wilson, Bart Wilson, Darin Wilson, Renae Wilson, and Bill Sindelar. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Gertrude, 90, died Thursday, March 14, 2002 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Gertrude C. Wilson was born August 12, 1911 in Howard County, the daughter of William and Julia (Woods) Wilson. She was a graduate of Cresco High School. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in 1931. She taught for 12 years in various rural schools in Howard County.

In 1941 she was elected president of the Iowa State Rural Teachers' Association, which had 8,000 members. In 1942 she moved to Oakland, CA. During the war period, she worked at the munitions factory helping to do her part.

Following the war, she worked as office manager of Gardner Neon and Ignition Transformer Inc. from 1958 until 1973. During this time, she became half owner of this company. From 1973 to 1985, she then worked as office manager for Kelly's Sporting Goods. She retired in 1985, and moved to Cresco.

She spent many hours doing volunteer work in Oakland, CA. She enjoyed traveling and traveled to every continent, her favorite being the Orient.

She belonged to the Notre Dame Parish Altar and Rosary Society.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers: Emmett and Floyd.

Verne Gager

Funeral services for Verne Gager were held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 18 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco with Rev. Rick Kielb officiating.

Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Verne, 78, died Friday, March 15 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown where he has made his home for the last 28 years.

Verne Osmer Gager was born May 4, 1923 at Cresco, the son of Herbert Leslie and Margaret (Kaufman) Gager. He graduated from Cresco High School and started working. He enlisted in the Army on January 15, 1943. He served in the South Pacific. Following his discharge on April 18, 1946, he returned to Iowa and started working for a photo studio in Charles City. Again he enlisted in the Army to serve during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he returned to Cresco and worked at various jobs. He was a cook, a bartender, and worked at a gas station.

Verne lived with his mother until she died in 1973 and in January of 1974 he entered the Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

He is survived by three sisters: Ellen Stevens of Cresco, Jennie Hagen of Des Moines, and Carol Casey of Lime Springs.

Verne was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Donald and Walter; and four sisters: Evelyn Swim, Thelma Rotte, Edna Sears, and Marian Gager in infancy.


 Charlotte Grosz

Funeral services for Charlotte Grosz of Cresco were held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, March 18 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco.

Interment was in Meservey Cemetery at Meservey on Tuesday, March 19 at 2:00 p.m. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Charlotte, 59, died Friday, March 15, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Mason City.

Charlotte Grosz was born December 10, 1942 in Mason City, the daughter of Lewis and Maxine (Waddington) Dorenkamp. She graduated from high school and attended business college.

Charlotte was married to George Grosz and they were later divorced. She worked in the family hardware business and later at the Howard County Residential Facility.

She is survived by two sons: Ryan of Cresco and Eric of Des Moines; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister: Linda Lou Dorenkamp of Clear Lake; two brothers: Tom of Omaha, NE and Jim of Thornton; and her step mother: Ruth Dorenkamp of Clear Lake.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents


Raymond Capouch

Funeral services for Raymond Capouch were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Schley with Rev. John A. Moser officiating.

Interment was in Holy Cross Church Cemetery in Schley. Pallbearers were his nephews: David Capouch, Bob Randak, Lloyd Neubauer, Virgil Neubauer, and Bill Koudelka. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ray, 88, died Saturday, March 16, 2002 at Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital of a massive heart attack.

Raymond Joseph Capouch was born March 23, 1913, the son of Joseph and Mary (Kubik) Capouch. Ray's boyhood was spent on a farm northwest of Schley. Ray attended country school near Schley in Howard County where the Sovereign Elevator now sits.

On September 22, 1941 he married Adela Koudelka at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They spent their entire life on a farm west of Schley. After retiring from farming, Ray enjoyed restoring antique engines and going to sales. He resided at the Cresco Care Center since April 20, 1999.

He is survived by one sister: Viola Capouch in the Cresco Care Center.

Raymond was preceded in death by his wife Adela on June 11, 1999; his father Joseph on June 9, 1965; his mother on November 17, 1958; one brother: George; and one sister: Dora Neubauer.


William Samec

Funeral services for William Samec were held on Friday, March 15 at the Assumption Worship Center in Cresco.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Honorary pallbearers were: Adam Samec, John Rasmusson, Gary Lienhard, Marty Hudecek, Lori Martinek, Janelle Mahr, and Ron Milota. Pall bearers were: Chris Samec, Chad Samec, Brian Fogarty, Danny Polashek, Edmund Samec, Gene Pecinovsky, and Richard Samec. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

William, 86, died Monday, March 11, 2002 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco where he has resided since February 12, 2002.

William Clarence Samec was born June 20, 1915 southwest of Cresco in Howard County, the son of Frank and Barbara (Hron) Samec. He attended the rural school and helped out on the farms in the neighborhood.

On May 16, 1939 he married Anna M. Havel at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin by Rev. Vaclav Hradecky. He worked on the farm until 1966 when he went to work for Huntting Elevator. He retired in 1980.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife Anna; four children: Norma Fogarty of Loxahatchee, FL, Kathy Polashek of Cresco, Adrian of Cresco, and Dennis of Lime Springs; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

William was preceded in death by one grandson; his parents; three brothers: Frank, Joseph, and James; and one sister: Mary Shock.


Adah Grube

Funeral services for Adah Grube were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 18 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco with Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiating.

Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Adah, 96, died March 15, 2002 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, MN after a short illness.

Adah Ovieda Grube was born June 22, 1905 on a farm in Lodi Township in Mower County near LeRoy, MN, the daughter of Ole and Anna (Hatleberg) Vold. She attended a rural school and then the LeRoy Public Schools, graduating from high school in 1924. Following graduation she worked at the Mayo Clinic in Medical Records until her marriage.

On September 7, 1931 she married Leo P. Grube at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in Mason City and Dubuque where her husband was employed as an auditor for DX Petroleum Oil Co. until moving to a farm north of Cresco in 1942 where she lived until 1977. She then moved to another rural home until 1989 when she moved to an apartment in Cresco where she resided until becoming a resident of the Evans Memorial Home in 1995.

In 2000, she and her sister, Olena Hendrickson were enrolled in the Centenarian Sibling Pair Study of the Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA.

Adah was a member of the Cresco United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She enjoyed fishing, crocheting, and reading.

She is survived by two daughters: Gaurdis Krider of LeMars and Dulcie Ollendieck of Cresco; five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren.

Adah was preceded in death by her husband in 1973; one son: Gary; one grandson; one step grandson; and five sisters.


Mary Retterath

Funeral services for Mary Retterath of Chester were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville with Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Mary, 71, died at her residence in rural Chester.

Mary Catherine Retterath was born September 8, 1930 in New Haven, the daughter of Carl J. and Amelia Mary (Schwieger) Adams . She attended Stacyville schools and two years prior to her marriage was employed at Pitzen Brothers Produce in Stacyville.

On September 28, 1949 she married Paul Retterath at the visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville.

She is survived by her husband Paul of Chester; three sons: Charles of Chester, Ronald of Elma, and Gary of Riceville; two daughters: Sharon Hanson of Fredericksburg and Linda Fagerness of Princeton, MN; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents.


Diane Kuper

Funeral services for Diane (Bean) Kuper, of Custer, SD, formerly of New Hampton, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 27 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Waucoma. Pallbearers will be: Virgil Snyder, Joey Snyder, Bryan Kilcher, Donald Kilcher, Jimmy Schwickerath, and Lyle Stolfus. Hugeback Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Services were also held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 23 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Custer.

Diane, 49, died Tuesday, March 19 at her home.

Diane M. Kuper was born June 4, 1952 in New Hampton, the daughter of John and Dorothy (Buschman) Patton.

On September 1, 2000 she married Randy Kuper in Custer, SD where they have resided at their "Trial and Error" cabin in Custer. Diane worked as a cook at Custer Youth Corrections Facility and the Lamont Center in Custer.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband on their Goldwing, cookouts at the cabin, dancing, yardwork, fishing, hiking, and loving her animals.

She is survived by her husband Randy of Custer; her parents: John and Dorothy Patton of Custer; three daughters: Debra Mashek and Trisha Bean, both of Lawler, and Kelly Martinez of Custer; one son: Billy Bean, Jr. of Cresco; two step daughters: Corina Webb of Judsonia, AK and Comfort Doe of Lonsdale, MN; and six grandchildren.

Diane was preceded in death by one son: Jeffery in infancy; and grandparents: Virgil and Julia Buschman.


Ann Huffman

Funeral services for Ann Huffman of New Hampton were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 26 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Hampton with Rev. Carl Schmitt officiating.

Concelebrating was Rev. Marvin Salz and Monsignor Leander Reicks. Interment was in St. Lukes Cemetery in St. Lucas. Her five daughters placed the pall. Pallbearers were her grandsons: Ron Kerian, Tom Kerian, Paul Pecinovsky, Kevin Wenthold, Keith Croatt, Kevin Croatt, Paul Sabelka, Jason Huffman, Ryan Huffman, and Andy Messersmith. Hugeback Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ann, 84, died Thursday, March 21, 2002 at her home of a heart attack.

Ann Huffman was born November 22, 1917 in Burnstead, ND, the daughter of Martin and Frances (Knobbe) Lueke. After the sudden death of her mother and infant sister Elizabeth in 1919, Ann came to live with her uncle and aunt Henry and Anna (Lueke) Best. Ann attended St. Lukes School and Church in St. Lucas.

On August 17, 1937 she married Joseph Boeding at St. Luke's Church in St. Lucas. They farmed with his father Herman and brother Arnold and wife for nine years before moving to a farm one and one half miles south of St. Lucas. Joe died June 19, 1975 from cancer. Ann spent the next seven years on the farm.

On September 30, 1982 she married LeRoy Huffman and moved to New Hampton. LeRoy died on March 9, 1992 from cancer. Ann was a former member of the St. Luke's Parish, and is presently a member of St. Mary's Church and Rosary Society, the Catholic Order of Foresters and a member of the New Hampton Legion Auxiliary.

She had a doll collection from all over the world.

She is survived by five daughters: Frances Pecinovsky of Cresco, Elaine Croatt and Mary Jo Sabelka, both of Lawler; Ruth Huffman and Karen Messersmith, both of New Hamtpon; 34 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; step children: Rita Van Dyke, Brian Huffman, Creighton and Robert Huffman and Philip Huffman and Jim Huffman.

Ann was preceded in death by her husbands; one daughter: Arlene Wenthold; one son: Eugene Boeding; one grandson; her parents; one brother: Rev. Clem Knobbe; and two sisters: Mary Eischeid, and infant sister: Elizabeth.


Arline Zdun

Funeral services for Arline Zdun of Prosper, MN were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 25 at the Burr Oak Lutheran Church in Burr Oak with Rev. Hans Floan officiating.

Interment was in Orleans Cemetery. Mengis Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Arline, 82, died Thursday, March 21, 2002 at her home.

Arline C. Zdun was born September 20, 1919 in Cresco, the daughter of Andrew and Charlotte Scott. She graduated from Cresco High School.

On March 8, 1941 she married Casimir Zdun in Prosper. The couple lived in Prosper. Arline was a school teacher for many years in the Hesper, Ridgeway, and Bluffton areas and Casey operated the Prosper Garage from 1946 to 1981.

She was a member of the Burr Oak Lutheran Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary, and the Prosper Neighbors Club.

She is survived by her husband Casimir of Prosper.

Arline was preceded in death by her parents.

Ronald Casey Funeral services for Ronald Casey were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 23 at the Saetersdal Lutheran Church in rural Lime Springs with Rev. Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating.

Interment was in Saetersdal Lutheran Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: William Casey, Michael Casey, Bryan Casey, Casper Casey, Scott Meyer, and David Stockdale. Honorary pallbearers were: Jeff Heidebrink, Doug Whiteman, Abbott Case, Lester Drtina, Todd Albertson, Rick Burke, Eric Kandare, and Les Soukup. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ronald, 88, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco of natural causes.

Ronald Maurice Casey was born October 30, 1913 in Wayne County, near Allerton, the son of Guy and Ina (Owen) Casey. He attended high school in Corydon. As a young man, he came to the Howard County area in the early 1930's.

On November 1, 1939 he married Carol Gager in Cresco.

He farmed for over 40 years for others in the Fillmore County area.

He is survived by his wife Carol of Lime Springs; six sons: David of Spring Valley, MN, Tom of Glencoe, MN, John of Lime Springs, James of Tavenier, FL, Jason of Medford, MN, and Joseph of Rochester, MN; two daughters: Verna Stockdale of Spring Valley, MN and Judy Graves of Gifford, PA; 27 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother: Beryl of Des Moines; and one sister: Evalie White of Ocala, FL.

Ronald was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Harold and Elmo; and one sister: Evelyn.

Genevieve Blake

Funeral services for Genevieve Blake of Riceville will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 27 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville with Rev. Ray. E. Atwood officiating.

Genevieve, 69, died Sunday, March 24, 2002 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Genevieve Theresa Blake was born January 5, 1933 in McIntire, the daughter of Lawrence and Marie (Wettstein) Retterath. She attended local schools and graduated from Adams High School in Adams, MN.

On October 30, 1951 she married James Blake at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Adams. She worked as an aide at the Riceville Community Rest Home for 28 years.

She enjoyed crocheting and gardening.

She is survived by her husband James of Riceville; four sons: Michael of Iowa City, Steven of Shakopee, MN, Carl of Morgan, MN, and William of Atlanta, GA; five daughters: Ann Kindschuh of Shakopee, MN, Karen Hartman, Rose Gansen, Cynthia Houser, and Marilyn Blake, all of Riceville; 15 grandchildren; four great-granddaughters; three brothers: John and Joseph, both of Adams, MN, and Thomas of Adams, IA; and seven sisters: Ann Hemann of St. Ansgar, Lorraine Kramer, Louise Goegren and Helen Weber, all of Adams, MN, Theresa Watson of Alandale, WI, Mary Rogne of Austin, MN, and Elizabeth Schik of Plymouth, MN.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents.


Gail Eide

Funeral services for Gail Eide of Riceville were held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27 at the Congregational Church in Riceville with Rev. Gale Richards officiating.

Gail, 88, died Sunday, March 24, 2002 at the Riceville Community Rest Home where she has lived since August 12, 1998.

Gail Arline Eide was born February, 21, 1914 at Riceville, the daughter of Jerry and Cora (White) Clark. She attended the rural school and went to Riceville High School for a short period. She started working at the Jamestown Cheese Factory when she was 15 years old.Gail also started working as a nurse, even though she had no certified training. She worked in various homes helping with the sick and started working with the doctor in the hospital and even making house calls with him. Finally she started working in the Riceville Nursing Home and had to become certified.

On March 8, 1935 she married James Eide in Osage by the Rev. Solum. They made their home east of Riceville.

She was a life long member of the Congregational Church. She was a member of the Golden Rule Circle.

She liked to cook, bake, and make quilts.

Gail was preceded in death by her husband James in February of 1972; her parents; one sister: Reva Clark; and three brothers: Leslie, Samuel, and Vernard.


Walter Warburton

A memorial service for Walter "Bill" Warburton of Riceville was held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 30 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville with Rev. Herschel Hawf officiating.

Interment was in Eddy-Kendallville Cemetery, Kendallville.

Walter, 77, died Sunday, March 24, 2002 at the Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.

Walter Warburton was born February 19, 1925 in Jamestown Township, Howard County, the son of John and Zeffie (Ford) Warburton. He received his schooling at the Round Grove School. He farmed with his father until they moved into Riceville in 1951. He drove a mail route between Riceville and Decorah, worked in maintenance at Luther College and Riceville Community Schools retiring in 1989.

He enjoyed attending steam engine shows and collecting and watching videos of them.

He is survived by one brother: Dale of Riceville; and three sisters: Evelyn Anderson of Riceville, Lois Eidness of Osage, and Maryetta Mentel of Waterloo.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Harry; and three sisters: Lenora Gansen, Grace Warburton, and Dolores Lambers.


Theodora Natvig

Funeral services for Theodora Natvig were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 29 at the Saude Evangelical Lutheran Church at Saude with Rev. Kent Dethlefsen officiating.

Interment was in Saude Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Travis Pollock, Craig Pollock, David Skaaland, Lance Zurfluh, Kyle Veltri, Allan Natvig, Oakleigh Natvig, and Roland Natvig. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Theodora, 79, died Monday, March 25, 2002 at her home

Theodora Sigrid Nativg was born Ocotber 22, 1922 in Chickasaw County, the daughter of Theodore and Tina (Nelson) Knutson. She was baptized and confirmed at the Jerico Lutheran Church. She attended rural grade school in Chickasaw County and graduated from New Hampton High School in 1940. She taught in rural elementary schools for three years.

On December 2, 1942 she married Godfrey Natvig at the Saude Lutheran Church parsonage. They made their home in Howard County, rural Cresco, where they farmed until the present.

She was a member of the Saude Lutheran Church where she was active in the Ladies Aid.

She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, and gardening.

She is survived by her husband Godfrey; eight children: Diane Skaaland of Wittenberg, WI, Dr. Duane Natvig of Northfield, VT, Mary Randall of Oak Park, IL, Gayle Zurfluh of Eatonville, WA, Marilyn Wallman of Medinah, IL, Tina Veltri of Loveland, CO, Ellen Rink of Decorah, and Michael of Cresco; 19 grandchildren; two brothers: Stanley and John, both of New Hampton; and two sisters: Lois Davis of Des Moines and Donna Jepson of New Hampton.

Theodora was preceded in death by her parents; and four sisters: Norma Munson, Oriette Adams, Colleen Pollock, and Shirley Knutson.


Walter Sunday

Funeral services for Walter Sunday of Modesto CA, formerly of Decorah, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 30 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Calmar with Rev. Harvey Abrahamson officiating.

Interment was in Calmar City Cemetery. Schluter Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Walter, 74, died Monday, March 25, 2002 at the Doctors Medical Center in Modesto following a sudden illness.

He is survived by one daughter: Leslie Peele of Charlotte, NC; two sons: Mark of Tucson, AZ and David of Huntington Beach, CA; and two sisters: Norma Costa of Modesto and Elaine Lowry of Decorah.


Hazel Crooks

Funeral services for Hazel Crooks of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 28 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Hampton with Rev. Carl Schmitt officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton. Hazel's children placed the pall. Pallbearers were: Robert MacMaster, Ryan Crooks, Adam Crooks, Daniel Crooks, Jared Crooks, and Robert Kolbet. Honorary pallbearers were: Art Kohls, Henry Brunner, Tom Mahoney, Mike Njus, Clair Roethler, John Loes, and Jerry Huegel. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Hazel, 84, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient in Mason City after an eight year battle with cancer.

Hazel Arlene Crooks was born June 18, 1917 at Alta Vista, the daughter of Herman and Christine (Erion) Dopp. She received her education in Alta Vista graduating from the Alta Vista Public School. After her schooling she lived with Rita and Clarence White working as a housekeeper and taking care of their children. She then went to work for Gerald Crooks as a bookkeeper at Crooks Implement in Alta Vista.

On October 24, 1946 she married Gerald F. Crooks in Waterloo. They resided in Alta Vista and continued to operate the Implement until their retirement in 1971. They moved to the Smith Century farm north of New Hampton where they resided until Gerald's death in 1996. Hazel moved to New Hampton where she was currently residing.

She was a member of the Alta Vista VFW Auxiliary, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Joan of Arc #388, St. Joseph Church, and the rosary society. She was active in the Cancer Support group in New Hampton.

She enjoyed playing bridge and 500 as well as traveling.

She is survived by two daughters: Cheryl Madsen of Brooklyn Park, MN and Denise Brinker of Maplewood, MN; three sons: Craig of Mason City, James of Minco, OK, and Kevin of Alta Vista; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Gerald; her parents; and a half-brother: Alvin Wismer.


Leonard Schlee

Funeral services for Leonard Schlee of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 30 at St. Benedicts's Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

Interment was in St. Benedict's Catholic Church Cemetery in Decorah. Schluter Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Leonard, 88, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah after a short illness.

He is survived by his wife Olivia of Decorah; one son: John of Postville; seven daughters: Audrey Halverson of Decorah, Lois Halvorson of Colorado Springs, CO, Juanita Bruening of Decorah, Judy Bruening of Colorado Springs, Betty Kirchner of Bloomington, MN, Kathy Schierholz of Colorado Springs, and Sharon Needles of Decorah; 22 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.


Gerald Dotzler

Memorial services for Gerald Dotzler formerly of Cresco and Mabel, MN will be held at 10:0 a.m. on Saturday, April 27 at the Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. David Schatz, nephew, officiating.

Gerald, 74, died Thursday, March 28, 2002 in Tucson, AZ.

Gerald Dotzler was born May 20, 1927 near Cresco, the son of Henry Sr. and Clara (Morgan) Dotzler. He served in the U.S. Army in 1946 and 1947.

On June 27, 1950 he married Leoba Schatz at St. Joseph's Church in Cresco. He farmed in the Cresco and Mabel areas before retiring to Arizona in 1979. He helped start a fire protection business in 1981, then moved to Tucson in 1983.

His hobby was iron work.

He is survived by his wife Leoba; seven sons: Gary of Gilbert, AZ, Jeff of Casper, WY, Dan of Rosemount, MN, Mark of Phoenix, AZ, Kelly of Fountain Hills, AZ, Chad of St. Joseph, MN, and Clair of Tucson, AZ; four daughters: Kathy Schmitt of Cresco, Kristy Olerud of Phoenix, AZ, LeAnn Brune of Leesburg, IN, and Monica Delbridge of Chandler, AZ; 19 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; one sister: Evelyn McKitrick; and one brother: Henry, Jr.
