Wallace Korsmo

Funeral services for Wallace "Wally" Korsmo will be held at 12:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 3 at the Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. John Friederick officiating.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers are: Mike Bigley, Tom Bigley, Tim Bigley, Brian McConnell, Bruce McConnell, and Brad McConnell. Honorary pallbearers are: Frank McConnell, Sam Lucas, and Joe Hernandez. Conway Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Wallace, 61, died Sunday, March 31, 2002 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Wallace K. Korsmo was born December 30, 1940 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Maurice and Ruth (Phillips) Korsmo. He graduated from Washington High School. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years.

On May 21, 1966 he married Patricia A. Bigley.

He owned his own welding shop called "Wally's Welding". He proudly sponsored the "Wally's" softball team. Wally had a long battle with cancer, becoming ill in June 1989. Before his illness he was employed by Notre Dame School as a caretaker.

He liked to go gambling, golfing, hunting, fishing, and bowling.

He is survived by his wife Pat of Cresco; one daughter: Amy Roberts of Lime Springs; two sons: Dennis of Washington and Jeff of Cresco; five grandchildren; one sister: Fran Kriz; and six brothers: Fred Korsmo, Jim Korsmo, Ron Korsmo, and Bob Phillips all of Cedar Rapids, and Maurice Korsmo, Jr. and Richard Korsmo of Texas.

Wallace was preceded in death by one grandson; his parents; and one brother: Daryl


Hattie Jirak

Funeral services for Hattie Jirak of Spillville were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 13 at Assumption Catholic Church in Little Turkey with Rev. John Moser officiating.

Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Little Turkey. Pallbearers were: Jeff Ira, Mark Balik, James Jirak, Vern Schmitt, Melvin Humpal, and Gordon Klimesh. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Hattie, 97, died Sunday, March 31, 2002 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah after a long illness.

Hattie Marie Jirak was born September 17, 1904 in Spillville, the daughter of Joseph and Barbara (Kortan) Klimesh. Hattie attended rural Winneshiek County and Spillville Parochial schools.

On September 27, 1923 she married Alois Jirak at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. They farmed near Little Turkey for many years. She retired and moved to Spillville and lived in Senior Housing until she entered the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in 1987.

She is survived by one daughter: Marlyn Murray of San Diego, CA; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Hattie was preceded in death by her husband Alis in 1984; one son: Howard; her parents; three brothers: Joseph, Frank and George; and nine sisters: (Josephine, Cecelia, Viola, Helen, Mary Klimesh), Barbara Novak, Agnes Jarosh, and Cecilie Humpal.


Loren Frymire

Funeral services for Loren "Huck" Frymire of Carmi, IL were held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. Rex Pilcher officiating.

Interment was in Big Prairie Cemetery near Carmi. Pallbearers were: Art Ackerman, Danny Allen, Mark Corbus, Jim Cutchin, Dennis Frymire and Sam Frymire. Honorary pallbearers were: Daniel Frymire and Jeff Sturgal.

Loren Frymire was born July 14, 1945 in Hawthorne Township, the son of Loren Morris and Beulah Murl (Sanders) Frymire.

On April 21, 1967 he married Jean Ann Frana, sister of Ed Frana of Cresco, at Fort Sill, OK. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1965 to 1967, and a grain elevator operator.

He is survived by his wife Jean of Carmi; three daughters: Nancy Lynn Frymire and Kimberly Frymire, both of Carmi, and Susan Jean Corbus of Greenville; one son: Dennis of Murray, KY; two grandchildren; five sisters; two brothers; and five half-brothers.



Ione Graves

Funeral services for Ione Graves of Riceville were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 4 at the United Church of Christ in Osage with Rev. Robert Melhorn officiating.

Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ione, 81, died Monday, April 1, 2002 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Ione Graves was born March 7, 1921 in Marshall County, the daughter of Merrill and Marguerite (Teeters) Mitchell.

On August 11, 1940 she married Marion L. Graves at the Congregational Church in Marshalltown. They moved to Riceville in 1950. They were engaged in farming until their retirement.

Ione enjoyed China painting, crocheting, knitting, and quilting. She was a 4-H leader for 10 years, a member of Eastern Star and was a liftetime member of the Congregational Church.

She is survived by one son: Dean of Osage; three daughters: Marilyn Butters of Mason City, Peggy Gall of Union, and Jean Affeldt of State Center; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother: Merrill of Marshalltown.

Ione was preceded in death by her husband Marion in 1998; her parents; and one sister: Helen Mitchell.


Marion Ollendieck

Funeral services for Marion Ollendieck were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9 at the St. Joseph's Worship Center with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. The entire family of brothers and sisters will place the pall. Pallbearers were her five brothers, with one nephew Paul Ollendieck standing in for his father. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Marion, 67, died Monday, April 1, 2002 at the Cresco Care Center where she has made her home since 1974.

Marion Cecelia Ollendieck was born September 25, 1934 at Cresco, the daughter of Bernard C. and Irma M. (Fritz) Ollendieck. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco, where she has been a lifetime member. She attended St. Joseph's Grade School and graduated from Notre Dame High School.

Marion had epilepsy most of her life and she stayed home to help her parents take care of their home. When her parents could no longer help care for her, she entered the care center.

She is survived by five brothers: Don, Richard, and Dean, all of Cresco, Charles of Palm Harbor, FL, and Kenneth of Buckingham; four sisters: Doris Ferrie, Jean McCarville, and Judy Tucker, all of Cresco, and Joyce Sweeney of Waterloo.

Marion was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother: Robert.


Angeline Goetz

Funeral services for Angeline Goetz of Elma were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 6 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes with Rev. John Hemann officiating.

Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery. Pallbearers were : Joe Neubauer, Art Aberly, Jerry Smith, Russell O'Brien, John Hoffer, Pete Chihak, Pat Ries, and Lloyd Neubauer. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Angeline, 85, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of natural causes.

Angeline M. Goetz was born May 24, 1916 on a farm near Lourdes, the daughter of James and Mayme (Stevenson) Neubauer. She attended country school near her home. After her schooling she spent most of her time caring for her grandparents.

On November 23, 1942 she married Frank Goetz at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.They farmed in the Lourdes area. In 1985 they retired from farming and rented out their land. The couple moved to Elma in 1991.

She was a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and Rosary Society. She enjoyed baking, playing cards, reading, sewing, making quilts, and embroidery.

Angeline was preceded in death by her husband Frank on February 3, 1995; her parents; and one brother: James, Jr.

 Helen Miller

Funeral services for Helen Miller of Lime Springs were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9 at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs with interment in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Lime Springs..

Honorary pallbearers were: Roger Mason, Roger Lepa, Bob Dickerson, Claire Anderlik, Darwin Gitch, and Christopher Scherb. Pallbearers were: Danny Miller, Jr., Bruce Eddie Swenson, Joshua Scherb, Zachary Scherb, Tim Thompson, and Brian Miller. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Helen, 77, died Saturday, April 6, 2002 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Helen M. Miller was born April 11, 1924 in Highland Center, the daughter of Ward and Elizabeth (Cunningham) Smith.

On November 28, 1942 she married Eddie Miller in Kohokah, MO. They resided in Lime Springs most of ther married life. Helen managed the theater for many years. She and her daughter Janet ran the Treasure Cove Gift Shop in Lime Springs from 1979 to 1991. For a short time she worked at VanderBie Hardware and she also sold Avon and Mary Kay products. Helen also worked as a child supervisor at the Lime Springs/Chester elementary school for a short time.

She is survived by two sons: Eddie W. Jr. and Danny, both of Rochester; three daughters: Carol Scherb of Dallas Center, Deborah Swenson of Lamoni, and Janet DeVries of Lime Springs; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Wendell of Fullerton, CA and Warren of Sun City, CA.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband Eddie, Sr. in 1989; her parents; and six brothers and sisters: Dan, Welden, Ruth and Marie, and two were infants.


Dorothy Rucker

Funeral services for Dorothy Rucker will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 11 at Garden View Chapel with interment in Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 2-9 p.m. and Thursday, one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Dorothy, 71, died Sunday, April 7, 2002 at the Ravenwood Health Care Center of natural causes.

Dorothy L. Rucker was born June 23, 1930 in Lime Springs, the daughter of Michael and Ida Mau Bronner.

On February 14, 1953 she married Darwin Rucker in Maple Leaf.

She had worked as a cook at Bieman's Cafe for many years.

She is survived by one daughter: Diane Buls of Evansdale; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers: Henry D. of Lime Springs, Earl L. of Jesup, and Arnold E. of Arizona; and five sisters: Edith Mae Benson of Cresco, Marcella G. Haskovec and Marilyn I. Nicholas, both of Lime Springs, Betty Jean Bates of Waterloo, and Elsie L. Pint of Phoenix, AZ.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Darwin on June 11, 1998; one daughter: Sandra Wilson; her parents; one brother: William C.; and three sisters: Lydia Howard, Lorraine Geiken, and Geraldine Price.


Linda Smith

Funeral services for Linda Smith of Lourdes will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 11 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes with interment in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Lourdes.

Friends may call from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma where there will be a 3:00 p.m. rosary and an 8:00 p.m. scripture service.

Linda, 50, died Sunday, April 7, 2002 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco of natural causes.

Linda Mae Smith was born November 20, 1951 at Elma, the daughter of Nicholas and Lidwina (Busch) Zeimetz. She attended Immaculate Conception Academy in Elma through 10th grade and then went to Cresco High School and graduated in 1970. She went to work at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester as a Lab Technician. A position that she held for two years.

On August 5, 1972 she married Francis M. Smith at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. They resided on the Smith family farm near Lourdes. Linda worked at the pharmacy in Elma for a short time. On March 15, 1992 the couple purchased the Roadside Rendezvous, a restaurant in Lourdes that they currently have been operating.

She is survived by her husband Francis of Lourdes; four sons: Andy of Burlington, Nick of Oskaloosa, Chris of Davenport, and Matthew of Oskaloosa; one daughter: Joni of Lourdes; two granddaughters; five brothers: Roger of Spring Valley, Francis of Elma, Mike of Elma, Nick of Elma and Larry of Denver; nine sisters: Cathy Nosbisch of Stewartville, MN, Marilyn Kiernan of Cedar Rapids, LouAnn Huegel of Alta Vista, Susan Marr of Spring Valley, Marie Smith of Lourdes Janet Flaherty of Lourdes, Tina Roethler of Alta Vista, Barb Smith of Elma, and Mary Jo Friedrich of Elma.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers: Virgil and Tom.


 Esther Johnson 

Funeral services for Esther Johnson, formerly of Clear Lake, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 15 at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake with Rev. Dean Hess officiating.

Interment was in Clear Lake Cemetery. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel handled the arrangements.

Esther, 91, died Friday, April 12, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. She has been a resident at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco for the last two years.

Esther Marie Johnson was born December 11, 1910 at Duncombe, the daughter of Martin and Ella (Jensen) Housken. Esther attended college and taught in a country school for four years. She furthered her education, attending college classes at Ellsworth College, Ft. Dodge Jr. College, and graduated from Upper Iowa University. She taught third grade at Ventura School for 20 plus years.

On June 6, 1933 she married Lloyd Johnson at the Washington Lutheran Church in Duncombe. They farmed in Duncombe and Webster City before moving to rural Ventura in 1937. They later moved to Clear Lake in 1947.

She enjoyed trailer camping and riding her bike.

She is survived by one daughter: Gwendolyn Boeke of Cresco; one son: Roger of Rockford, IL; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one brother: Wayne of Lake Charles, LA.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband; an infant grandson; her parents, one sister; and an infant brother.

Ruth Burri 

Funeral services for Ruth Burri of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 13 at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen officiating.

Interment was in First Lutheran Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Allan Boice, David Burri, David Hamilton, Ron Peterson, Lester K. Sorenson, and Roger Timp. Honorary pallbearers were: Matthew Burri, Arnold R. Duneman, and Bernard C. Livingood. Fjelstul Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ruth, 83, died Monday, April 8, 2002 at Green Lea Manor, in Mabel, MN of a long illness.

Ruth Alberta Burri was born October 13, 1918 in Winneshiek County, the daughter of Julian Sandvik and Gertrude (Hammervold) Sandvik. She was baptized at Fremont Lutheran Church. Ruth's mother died accidentally when she was two years old and she was adopted by her aunt, Lena Pederson Sandvik and Albert Sandvik. She was confirmed at Fremont Lutheran Church. Ruth attended public schools in Winneshiek County and graduated from eighth grade on June 2, 1933. For several years after her graduation Ruth worked as a hired girl.

On October 13, 1937 she married Adolph Frederick Burri at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. They farmed in Winneshiek County, near Kendallville until 1961. During that time they were active members of the Fremont Lutheran church. When they retired from the farm they moved to Decorah and Ruth was employed as a chef at Luther College for a number of years.

After retiring, Ruth enjoyed camping, reading murder mysteries, doing crocheting, embroidery, and cooking.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church at Decorah and was active in the Altar Guild.

She is survived by two daughters: Phyllis Burri of Decorah and Constance Boice of St. Charles, MN; two sons: Eugene Burri of Rochester, MN and James of Onalaska, WI; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and two half-sisters: Gerd Holden of Trondheim, Norway and Margot of Leksvik, Norway.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Adolph; one grandson; her parents; her adoptive parents; two sisters: Gladys Teetshorn and Inga Teetshorn; and four brothers: Gerhard, Engvald, Leon, and Elmer.


Donald Zimmer

Funeral services for Donald "Ernie" Zimmer of Cedar Falls were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home and Cremation Service with inurnment at a later date.

Donald, 53, died Sunday, April 14, 2002 at his home of natural causes.

Donald Zimmer was born December 26, 1948 in Charles City, the son of Donald V. and Katherine (Simmons) Zimmer. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa and was employed at Kay Park Industries in Janesville.

He is survived by two sons: McCaine of St. Louis, MO and Damon of Overland Park, KS; one daughter: Alana Zimmer of Minneapolis, MN; two brothers: Michael Wheeler of Ashburn, VA and David Zimmer of Mabel, MN; and four sisters: Deborah Hughes and Renee Russett, both of Frankville, Kim Hageman of Cresco, and Lesia Stuelke of Center Point.

Donald was preceded in death by two daughters: Terri and Tammi, both in infancy; and his parents.


Leonard Funke

 Leonard Funke, 83, died on April 12, 2002 at the Elkader Nursing Home in Elkader.

Services for Leonard Funke are pending at Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak.

Leonard Funke was born May 5, 1918, the son of Hubert and Katherine (Roth) Funke near Decorah.

On September 28, 1940 he married LaVonne Emery. They lived in the Burr Oak and Decorah areas until moving to the Harmony, MN area. They farmed near the Niagra Cave for many years.

He is survived by his children: Melvin of Granger, MN, Kristie Funke of Rochester, MN, Jo Ann Raclue of Hayfield, MN, and Rose Tripp of Cresco; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Leonard was preceded in death by his wife LaVonne on April 18, 1985 and one sister: Frances Houdek.


Anthony Kyle

Funeral services for Anthony Kyle were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 13 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco with Rev. Michael Carey officiating.

Anthony, 84, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Elma after a lingering illness.

Anthony Kirby Kyle was born February 21, 1918 in Schaller, the son of Edward and Zora (Pippenger) Kyle. He attended school in the Schaller community. At an early age he began farming with his father.

On June 5, 1943 he married Erma Naslund of Galva at the home of her parents. They lived on the Kyle farm for 20 years. In February of 1963 they moved to Greenwood, WI as they were in the dairy business.Later they owned two other dairy farms in Wisconsin. In 1979 they gave up dairying and went into the motel business. They owned and operated several motels in Iowa. In the fall of 1994 they retired and moved to an acreage near Lime Springs.

He is survived by his wife Erma of Lime Springs; two sons: Roger of Woodbury, MN and Randy of Madison, WI; and four grandchildren.


Lillian Stepan

Funeral services for Lillian Stepan were held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, April 19 at the Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating.

Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Spillville. Pallbearers were her grandchildren: Kenneth Hyke, Frankie Karnik, Richard McGee, Ray Stepan, David Stepan, and Jason Stepan. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Lillian, 94, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, where she has made her home since September 1999.

Lillian A. Stepan was born August 17, 1907 in Howard County, between Cresco and Protivin, the daughter of Ludwig and Agnes (Andera) Pecinovsky. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. She attended the rural school near her home through the fifth grade and then had to stay home and help with the chores.

On October 16, 1928 she married John J. Stepan in the Holy Trinity Church in Protivin.She continuted to work on the farm as the hired hand.

She gardened and canned the produce, baked, and enjoyed embroidering and crocheting.

She is survived by her children: Agnes McGee of Cresco, Lillian Karnik of Spillville, Ed of West Union, T.J. of Nashua, and W.W. of St. Louis MO; 32 grandchildren; 18 step grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 10 step great-grandchildren; and six step great-great-grandchildren.

Lillian was preceded in death by one grandson; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and three brothers: John, James F., and Leo; and one sister: Agnes Komarek.


 Laura Dybvik 

Graveside services for Laura Dybvik will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 18 at the Freemont Cemetery in Winneshiek County.

Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Laura, 85, died Sunday, April 14, 2002 at the Harmony Nursing Home in Harmony, MN where she had been a resident since 1998.

Laura Elizabeth Dybvik was born September 18, 1916 in Freemont Township, Winneshiek County, the daughter of Gust and Petra (Pederson) Anderson.

On February 11, 1936 she married Alvin Julius Dybvik. They resided in Cresco, until moving to a farm in Winneshiek County where they lived for 22 years. In 1979 they retired to Harmony.

Laura liked to read and bake.

She is survived by two daughters: Laurene Rogers of LeRoy, MN and Marlene Dolce of Denver, CO; one son: Allan of Decorah; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and one brother: Palmer of Waterloo.

Laura was preceded in death by her husband Alvin on October 31, 2000; one son; four grandchildren; her parents; five brothers; and one sister.


Harvey Biel

Funeral services for Harvey Biel were held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 19 at Saetersdal Lutheran Church rural Lime Springs with Rev. Linda Johnson officiating.

Interment will be at a later date. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Harvey, 92, died Monday, April 15, 2002 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Harvey Biel was born October 27, 1909 at Ridgeway, the son of Louis and Amanda (Garms) Biel. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1929. On March 5, 1934 he married Mary Nora Pickett. They farmed near Wykoff, MN for 10 years and then in Bristol Township, Fillmore Co. until they retired in 1986 and moved to Granger where they made their home for retirement.

He enjoyed farming, his shop, refinishing old furniture , and also ran the township road patrol.

He is survived by his wife Mary of Granger; six children: Stanley of Arkansaw, WI, Clifford of Mondovi, WI, Marian Beiwel of Decorah, Cynthia Moore of Clinton, Julia Kellogg of Liberty, MO, and Louis of DeWitt; 24 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Harvey was preceded in death by one granddaughter; his parents; and three brothers: Leo, Royal, and Russell.


Doris O'Donnell

Funeral services for Doris O'Donnell of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 23 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Hampton with Rev. Carl Schmitt officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton. Granddaughters placed the pall. Pallbearers were: Brett O'Donnell, Tyler O'Donnell, Jason O'Donnell, Gerald Wilson, Wayne Sovereign, and Jim Bodensteiner. Hugeback Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Doris, 91, died Thursday, April 18, 2002 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo of natural causes.

Doris O'Donnell was born January 14, 1911 on a farm in New Oregon Township, Howard County, the daughter of Warren and Florence (River) Sovereign. She attended rural country schools for eight years and the Cresco High School graduating in May 1923 with a Normal Training Teachers Certificate. For the next eight years she taught in local area schools. In 1936 she bought and operated a bakery in Cresco for two years. Doris successfully ran for the Howard County Treasurer's office in 1938. She held that office for the next four years until her marriage.

On March 5, 1943 she married George (NorbertO'Donnell of Elma. From 1962 to 1975 they owned and operated the "Cue Club" in New Hampton.

She is survived by five sons: Joseph of Ashland, Or, Jerry of Waterloo, D.J. of Lebanon, TN, Mark of Edmond, OK, and Jim of Rock Island, IL; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and an adopted sister (cousin): Dorothy Fencl of Cresco.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband George; her parents; three brothers: Claude, Gerald, and Clark; and one sister: Gladys Wilson.


Virginia Hollingsworth

Funeral services for Virginia Hollingsworth of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 22 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Hampton with Rev. Carl Schmitt officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton. Three of her children placed the pall. Pallbearers were: Joe Karwick, Dick Recker, Kevin Kennedy, Jim O'Connor, Dale Gates, and Ray Klenske. Honorary pallbearers were: Ralph Kennedy, Frank Hollingsworth, Norb Steffen, Bob Rigler, Joe Sheehy, Rosemary Huffman, and Sharon Bunger. Hugeback Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Virginia, 81, died Thursday, April 18, 2002 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of natural causes.

Virginia Hollingsworth was born July 30, 1920 in Fredericksburg, the daughter of Clarence and Izetta (Gouldsberry) Upham. At the age of two, the Upham family moved to New Hampton where Virginia attended New Hampton schools and graduated in 1938.

On January 6, 1940 she married Timothy Donovan . Timothy died on November 26, 1971. After the children were raised, she went to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture where she sold crop insurance from 1966 until retiring in 1982.

She married Niles Hollingsworth on Christmas 1972. Niles died on April 12, 1986.

Virginia was an active member of the St. Joseph Catholic church and Rosary Society and a 50 plus year member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She enjoyed fishing, bowling, playing cards, swimming, and golf.

She is survived by two sons: Mark Donovan of Springfield, VA and John Donovan of Cascade; two daughters: Maggie Miller of New Hampton and Mary Catherine Slocema of Honolulu, HI; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Virginia was preceded in death by her first husband Timothy, her second husband Niles; her parents; one brother: Dale; and one sister: Beatrice Boma.

John Souhrada

 Funeral services for John Souhrada will be held at 11:00 a.m., today, Wednesday, April 24 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Glen Wheeler and Rev. Robert Hupp officiating.

Pallbearers are: Jim Truka, Tom Beck, Bill Seele, Eldon Strike, Eugene Warnke, and Harold Munkel. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

John, 66, died Sunday, April 21, 2002 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI.

John Joseph Souhrada was born April 30, 1914 in Saratoga Township, Howard County.

On September 19, 1936 he married Hope C. Lidtke. He farmed all his life in Howard County.

John was concerned for the environment and the conservation of our natural resources. He planted thousands of trees. He and his son, Dave, created the Souhrada Forest on the Upper Iowa River. John and Hope created the "Souhrada Wildlife Preserve" near Davis Corners. His 10 years on the Howard County Conservation board helped promote other natural habitat areas.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and farming.

He is survived by his wife Hope; one daughter: Janel Souhrada Stephens of Tipton; one son: Dave of Grundy Center; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister: Viola Leslie of Lime Springs.

John was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Richard and Emil; and one sister: Helen.


Robert Cowles 

Funeral services for Robert Cowles formerly of Lamont, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 27 at Grace United Methodist Church at Lamont with Rev. Dwight Webster officiating.

Interment was in Campton-Oak Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were : Kevin Popham, Jeremy Popham, Marty Seedorff, Ryan Cowles, Jonathan Nierling, Jesus Garcia, Jason Elledge, and Frank Egloff. Fawcett Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Robert, 77, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002 in University Hospital in Iowa City, following a short illness.

Robert B. Cowles was born April 5, 1925 at Lamont, the son of A.O. and Mary (Haskins) Cowles. He graduated from Lamont High School in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army on July 28, 1943 serving in Central Europe during WWII until his discharge on November 27, 1945.

On May 18, 1946 he married Velma Hill at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.He worked with his father at the A.O. Cowles Produce in Lamont for a few years, then at Wilson's in Cedar Rapids and last worked for the Iowa DOT. Velma died on May 25, 1987 at Lamont. Robert married Delores Magirl on June 11, 1988 at Cresco. They made their home in Cresco.

Robert was a member of the Lamont American Legion.

He is survived by his wife Delores of Cresco; one son: Dennis of Iowa City, two daughters: Jane Seedorff of Lamont and Lynette West of Lamont; step daughter: Carol Nierling of Columbia, MO; and step son: Ronald of Cresco; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother: Dey of Sheboygan, WI.

Robert was preceded in death by his first wife, Velma; two infant children: Kevin and Janette; and his parents.


Karen Klatt 

Funeral services for Karen Klatt of Elma were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 27 at Immanuel Lutheran Church Crane Creek, rural Lawler with Rev. Peter D. Peterson officiating.

Interment was in Crane Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers were: David Klatt, Charles Klatt, Kenneth Duryee, Robert Duryee, Harvey Christenson, and Richard Samec. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Karen, 90, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002 at Colonial Manor in Elma of natural causes.

Karen Klatt was born September 8, 1911 at Lawler, the daughter of Halvor and Johanna (Haageness) Christenson. She was a 1929 graduate of New Hampton High School. She taught school for two years at country schools near New Hampton.

In 1931, she was married to Elmer Klatt at Crane Creek Lutheran Church. They resided in Fredericksburg, Decorah, and Alta Vista and owned and operated bakeries. The couple later moved to Cresco. Karen later moved to Minneapolis and worked at the North Star. After retiring she moved to Elma.

She enjoyed sewing.

She is survived by three children: Marilyn Duryee of Plainfield, Gordon of Perry, and Lois Klatt of Chicago, IL; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister: Dorothy Kettner of Waverly.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Gilbert and Edwin; and two sisters: Ella Nystel and Bertha Samec.


Robert Harding

Funeral services for Robert "Bob" Harding were held Tuesday, April 30 at 2:00 p.m. at the Conway Funeral Home.

Rev. Tim Sir officiated. Pallbearers were: Craig Harding, Shawn Kalvelage, James Jagerson, Aaron Jagerson, Ed Block, and Wade Cook. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery in Cresco. Conway Funeral Home of Cresco was in charge of arrangements.

Robert, 29, died Saturday, April 27, 2002 at the Mercy Hospital in Oelwein.

Robert Darwin Harding was born October 24, 1972, the son of Darwin and Donna (Foss) Harding. He attended and graduated from Crestwood High School. Following high school, he attended Riverland Technical School and graduated at the top of his class as a master machinist.

On September 4, 1999 he was united in marrige to Marletta Reindl in Eagle Butte, SD. They lived in Spencer for about a year and a half, moved to Worthington, MN and finally moved to Oelwein.

Bob liked to draw, especially drawings of cars. He enjoyed racing. Cars were his passion.

He is survived by his wife: Marletta of Oelwein; his mother: Donna Harding of Cresco; one brother: Craig and his wife Hillory of El Paso, TX; three sisters: Karen McGrane and her husband Dominic of Cresco, Barb Jagerson of Austin, MN, and Becky Jahr of Cresco; five nephews: Dodge and Casper McGrane, Shawn Kalvelage, James and Aaron Jagerson; and one niece: Emma Harding.

He was preceded in death by his father and his mother-in-law.

Herman Anderson

Funeral services for Herman Anderson of rural Calmar were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway with Rev. Philip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson officiating.

Interment was in Lincoln Lutheran Cemetery, rural Ridgeway. Pallbearers were his grandchildren. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Herman, 70, died Sunday, April 28, 2002 at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI following a lengthy illness.

Herman Ardein Anderson was born August 14, 1931, the son of Gilbert and Luella (Justaad) Anderson. He was baptized September 13, 1931 in the Hauge Lutheran Church and confirmed in the Decorah Lutheran Church. He was educated in the rural school near his home. He served in the US Army from November of 1955 until August of 1957 at Ft. Sill, OK.

On July 15, 1957 he married Lois Russell Albertson at Wichita Falls, TX. After his discharge, they farmed near Spillville.

Herman enjoyed farming and making and fixing the things on the farm. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing all sorts of games with his family.

He is survived by his wife Lois of rural Calmar; two daughters: Candi Nelson of Calmar and Tresha Kuennen of Calmar; one step son: Tyrome Albertson of Cresco; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers: Gordon of Decorah and Donald of Cedar Rapids; and six sisters: Clara Williams of Decorah, Almeda Grindeland of Seattle, WA, Pauline Keune of Ft. Atkinson, Beverly Steen of Waterloo, Frances Frana of Decorah, and Katherine Holten of Cedar Rapids.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters: Irene Groth and Loretta Phillips.


Alice Ott

Funeral services for Alice Ott were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1 at St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry Charipar officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were her grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers were her great-grandchildren. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Alice, 77, died Monday, April 29, 2002 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco where she has made her home since December of 2001.

Alice M. Ott was born January 14, 1925 in Milford, IL, the daughter of August and Hazel (Marvin) Krueger. Her parents died when she was a young girl and she came to live with Emma Rock. She attended the rural schools of Howard County.

On March 8, 1945 she married Clyde Rock in Lanesboro, MN. He died on April 13, 1949. On September 16, 1950 she married Florian Ott in Cresco. He died on January 17, 1984.

She worked as a waitress most of her life at the Red Hut, Stop Lite, Parkview Cafe, and Country Kitchen.

She enjoyed embroidering, reading, and watching TV.

She is survived by two daughters: Linda Squiers of Gilbert and Gilda Mullen of Cresco; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one sister: Ruby Ott of Cresco; and one brother: Edward of Hartville, MO.

Alice was preceded in death by her two husbands; her parents; one brother: Harry; and two sisters: Loretta Ott and Esther Benson.
