Clayton, 44, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002 at his residence after an extended illness.

Clayton Dean Bill was born September 26, 1957 in Charles City, the son of Harvey and Dorothy (Chambers) Bill.

On January 3, 1991 he married Debra Renae Morrell in Cresco. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a mechanic.

He is survived by his wife Debra of Morristown; two sons: Anthony of Burnsville, MN and Harvey of Morristown; one daughter: Amy Bill of Houston, TX; one step-daughter: Randi Bill of Morristown; three grandchildren; his mother: Dorothy Bill of Riceville; eight sisters: Nancy Grimm of Riceville, Judy McMaster of Riceville, Janice Runnion of Spencer, WV, Mary Olson of Cresco, Tammy Loecher of Adams, MN, Sandy Runde of LeRoy, MN, Vickie Roethler of Algona, and Linda Levorson of Riceville; and four brothers: Larry of Hampton, Kenneth of LeRoy, Roy of Charles City, and Russell of Morristown.

Clayton was preceded in death by his father; and two brothers: David and Jesse.

Frank Jackson

Funeral services for Frank Jackson were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 6 at First Lutheran Church in Cresco with Intern Anna Tews officiating.

Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were his grandchildren: Abraham Jackson, Gene Wenthold, Darcy Wenthold, Justin Jackson, Luke Lubahn, Jackson Smith, Heide Jackson, Shannon Reis, Kathy Lubahn, and Emma Smith. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Frank, 78, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County.

Frank Jackson and his twin sister were born June 4, 1924 at Bettendorf to Alice May Shannon-Jackson and Benjamin LeRoy Jackson. There were seven children born to the marriage and when their mother died, the children were split-up, the younger children spent time in an orphanage in Toledo Juvenile Home. Frank and his twin sister, Frances were raised on a farm near Chimney Rock by Ruth and Albert Benson. Frank remained with the Bensons until his marriage.

On October 20, 1948 he married Nancy Ann Eaton. Frank was employed by Culbert's Implement, Farm Service, operated his own milk route and worked for Surge for 28 years before he retired.

He volunteered for the Cresco fire Dept., was a Sunday School teacher, 4-H advisor and a membr of the Cresco Saddle Club.

Frank enjoyed horses, gardening, yard work, bowling, birds, and going for drives along the river.

He is survived by his wife Nancy; his children: Ken of Waseca, MN, Keith of Clinton, Ruthie Wenthold of Cresco, Bernie of Cresco, Bev Lubahn of Wykoff, MN, and Linda Smith of White Bear Lake, MN; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his brothers and sisters: Wilber of Gilman, Ben of Cresco, Frances Langholf of Alburquerque, NM, Agnes Williams of Eldora, Mary Hautekeek of Grinnell, and Opal McDonald of What Cheer.

Frank was preceded in death by one son: Larry; his parents; and one sister: Dorothy.

Lois Klinefelter-Hughes

Lois died Wednesday, July 3, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Lois Estella Klinefelter-Hughes was born July 28, 1931 in rural O'Brien County, the youngest daughter of Rolland Klinefelter and Stella Klinefelter. She grew up in Peterson where she became a member of the Congregational Church. Lois graduated from Peterson High School in 1949. She worked for a time at the Peterson State Bank and later at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

In 1955, she married Stephen Hughes in her hometown church at Peterson. She made her home in Lime Springs, where she became a member of the United Methodist Church.

She was a member of the Eastern Star and the J.C. Club in Lime Springs.

She is survived by her husband Stephen; two grandchildren; one brother: Robert of Peterson; and one sister: Joyce Finney of Ontario, Canada.

Lois was preceded in death by one son: Charles Donald in 1987.

Vivian Hockens

Vivian, 77, died Friday, July 5, 2002 at her home in McIntire.

Vivian Catherine Hockens was born September 26, 1924 at Adams, MN, the daughter of Joe Jr. and Rosa (Krebsbach) Koenigs. She grew up in the Adams area and attended Sacred Heart School in Adams.

On February 16, 1946 she married Perry Hockens at Immaculate Conception Church in Riceville. They operated a restaurant in Bailey. They lived in the McIntire area, and then settled in town.

Vivian was employed at the Fox River Mills in Osage for over 30 years. The last four years, she worked part-time at LeRoy Products.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, its Altar and Rosary Society. She liked playing cards.

She is survived by three daughters: Ida Rowe of LeRoy, MN, Brenda Stevenson of McIntire, and Julie Jacobs of Minnetonka, MN; one son: James of Rochester, MN; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers: Ernest of CA and Edmund of MI; and four sisters: Helen Mullenbach of Adams, MN, Dorothy Gunsallus of McIntire, Millie Barnes of Grand Meadow, MN, and Margaret Kohel of WI.

Vivian was preceded in death by her husband Perry on March 30, 1978; one daughter: Sandy Kozak; her parents; two brothers; and three sisters.

Arlene Denner

Funeral services for Arlene Denner of New Hampton will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, July 7 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton with Rev. David Bergstrom and Rev. Kevin Frey officiating.

Arlene, 88, died Saturday, July 6, 2002 at the New Hampton Care Center of natural causes.

Arlene J. Denner was born Septembr 11, 1913 in rural Chickasaw County, the daughter of Samuel and Justina (Waientiny) Boos. She attended rural country school and the New Hampton High School.

On November 28, 1933 she married William Denner at the former St. Paul Lutheran Church parsonage in New Hampton. They lived and farmed near Fredericksburg and moved to New Hampton in 1936. Arlene worked many years as a clerk at the former Coast-to-Coast Hardware Store in New Hampton. She remained at her home until December of 2001 when she became a resident of the New Hampton Care Center.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and as an active member of the Ladies Aid.

She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and fishing.

She is survived by one daughter: Betty Gorman of New Hampton; one son: Glen Denner of Wetumpka, AL; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Earl of New Hampton and Robert also of New Hampton; and two sisters: Lorraine Eller of New Hampton and Coletta Buss of St. Paul, MN.

Arlene was preceded in death by her husband in 1983; one granddaughter; and her parents.

Judy Galchutt

Funeral services for Judy Dale Galchutt of Minnetonka, MN were held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10 at Washburn-McReavy Strobeck-Johnson Funeral Chapel in Hopkins, MN.

A memorial service was held on Friday, July 12 at 7:00 p.m. at the Elma Methodist Church.

Judy, 59, died Sunday, July 7, 2002.

She was a longtime employee of Hennepin Parks in Minnesota.

She is survived by her husband Steve; her parents: Dale and Evelyn Hart of Elma; one sister: Joyce Ann Hart of Mason City; and three brothers: James of Petersburg, IL, Joseph of Alta Vista, and Jerry of Rochester, MN.

Cory A. Hageman

Funeral services are scheduled for today (Wednesday), July 17, for a Decorah teenager who died as a result of drowning in the Vernon Springs mill pond south of Cresco.

Cory A. Hageman, 17, died Friday, July 12, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester from complications of the drowning that took place on Monday, July 8.

Hageman and several friends were attempting to swim across the mill pond from the Howard County park on the south shore to the Cresco Country Club. His friends summoned help when Hageman disappeared and a number of golfers, including off-duty Cresco firemen, responded. CRP was performed and Hageman was taken to the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco before being air lifted to St. Mary's where he remained in serious condition.

Hageman, born Dec. 6, 1984 in El Salvador the son of Larry and Jerilyn Hageman, was a Decorah High School student. He worked at McDonald's in Decorah for more than three years.

Survivors include his parents; a sister, Krista Hageman at home; brothers Michael and Kyle, both at home; and his grandparents, Hazel Stortz of Decorah and Eugene and Jeanne Hageman of Decorah.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Robert Stortz and paternal grandmother, Patricia Hageman.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Schluter-Balik Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Jungbluth

Memorial services for Mildred "Millie" Jungbluth of New Hampton were held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 14 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton with Rev. Bergstrom officiating.

Interment will be held at a later date in Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Cremation Society of Eastern Iowa handled the arrangements.

Mildred, 81, died Friday, July 12, 2002 at her home following a brief illness.

Mildred L. Jungbluth was born August 15, 1921, the daughter of Vera (Andersen) and Arthur Anderson.

On September 4, 1943 she married Carl Jungbluth. She received her training as a registered nurse at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. She worked as a registered nurse at the Washington County Hospital and also provided private duty nursing in New Hampton.

She loved knitting and traveling.

She is survived by one daughter: Christine Popenhagen of Middleton, WI; one son: Carl of New Hampton; four grandchildren; two sisters: Alice Anderson of Texas and Marilyn Lukins of Hoodsport, WA; and two brothers: Bill and Ed, both of Riverside, CA.

Mildred was preceded in death by four brothers: Charles, Bob, Harry, and Richard; and three sisters: Nell Wenger, Ruth Pratt, and Frances Detweiler.

Michael Huebner

Funeral services were held in Marshfield, WI for Michael Paul Huebner, three week infant son of Dr. Julie Doubek-Huebner and Barry Huebner.

Michael, and his identical twin brother, Hayden, were born June 21, 2002 in Marshfield, WI.

He is survived by his parents; sisters: LeAnn and Mary Schwarz; paternal grandmother: Jeanine Martinson of Stratford, WI; maternal grandparents: Roger and Elaine Doubek, Dennis and Kay Herold, all of Cresco; maternal great-grandparents: Floyd and Connie Herold; and great-great-grandmother: Gertrude Herold, all of Decorah.

Julia Pecka

Julia, 100, died Monday, July 15, 2002 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco where she has made her home since 1990.

Julia Pecka was born September 13, 1901 in Czechoslovakia, the daughter of John and Rosa Vlk. She attended school in the old country and came to the United States in 1923.

She married Joseph Marhoul at Gridley, KS. They lived in Kansas for a few years and in 1941, they moved back to Winneshiek County between Ridgeway and Cresco. Joseph died in 1958 and she later married Frank Pecka in 1960 at Cresco and moved back to Kansas. They lived there about three years and Frank died. Julia then returned to the Cresco area to make her home.

Julie liked to travel and had been to Hawaii, and had returned to her home country three times. She liked to bake, crochet and take care of the flowering plants in her home. She belonged to a garden club.

She is survived by one son: George Marhoul of Cresco; one step daughter: Alice Hess of Burlington, KS; 13 grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 17 step great-grandchildren; and numerous step great-great-grandchildren.

Julia was preceded in death by two husbands; one son: Joseph Marhoul Jr.; one daughter: Helen Pecinovsky; her parents; one step son: Frank Pecka Jr.; one step daughter: Irene Hess; and two sisters from Czechoslovakia.

Evelyn Zotika

Evelyn, 84, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002 at the Grandview Heights Nursing Home in Marshalltown.

Evelyn Mary Zotika was born April 12, 1918 near Saratoga, Howard County, the daughter of Albert J. and Clara (Ranc) Haskovec. She attended the rural school near her home and then attended Lime Springs High School. Following her education, she returned to help her parents on the farm.

On May 23, 1939 she married John J. Zotika at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. They started farming in the Lime Springs area. They retired from the farm and moved into Cresco in 1973.

Evelyn was a member of St. Stephan's Catholic Church in Chester until they moved into Cresco and she joined the Assumption Church. She belonged to both church's Altar and Rosary Society. While in the Lime Springs area, she belonged to two different women's clubs.After moving to Cresco, she volunteered at the Evans Memorial Home and also doing church work.

She is survived by two daughters: Sharon Witty of Melbourne and Judith Emde of Lawrence, KS; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband John on December 15, 1996; her parents; and two brothers: Leonard and Clarence.

Melvin Sebastian

Melvin, 83, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Melvin Sebastian was born November 11, 1918 in Cresco, the son of Leslie and Jessie (Bouska) Sebastian. Mel grew up in the Cresco area.

He married Lillie Bakken.

He worked for a Harley Davidson dealership in LaCrosse, WI as a mechanic until serving in the Air Force during WW II as a flight engineer. Upon his discharge he worked for Howard County doing road maintenance until 1953 when he started his own construction business and later starting Sebastian Welding and Machine which he owned and opearated until his dealth.

He is survived by four sons: Ron of Eldridge, Robert of Preston, MN, Roger of Salt Lake City, UT, and Rick of Cresco; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother: Donald of Cresco.

Melvin was preceded in death by his wife Lillie; and his parents.

Joseph Wanderscheid

Funeral services for Joseph Wanderscheid of New Hampton, formerly of Florida, were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 19 at Holy Family Catholic Community - St. Joseph Center with Rev. Carl Schmitt officiating.

Joseph, 92, died Wednesday, July 17 at the New Hampton Care Center of natural causes.

Joseph A. Wanderscheid was born August 2, 1909 in Lawler, the son of John and Anna (Schwindinger) Wanderscheid. He attended elementary and high school in Lawler graduating in 1928. In 1935, he graduated from the Spencerian College in Cleveland, OH. He taught school in a one-room country school near Lawler for two years.

On October 14, 1940 he married Mary Aileen Souder. In March of 1942, he began working for the United States Treasury Department - Internal Revenue Service. He retired on December 31, 1976 after serving as a special agent investigating organized crime. He received congratulations from Attorney General Robert Kennedy for his work and was also featured in several books about the organized crime investigations he participated in. His wife Mary died February 7, 1972. In 1978 he married Kay Moran who died of cancer in 1979.

He enjoyed golf, researching family history, and reading.

Joseph was preceded in death by his wives: Mary and Kay; his parents; one sister: Margaret Wanderscheid; and five brothers: Wilfred, George, Martin, Louis, and Elmer.

Lloyd Peter

Funeral services for Lloyd Peter were held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 21 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lime Springs with Rev. Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating.

Lloyd, 68, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City. He had been suffering from congestive heart failure since 1988 and most recently had spent since June 12 in the U of I Hospital.

Lloyd Eugene Peter was born June 27, 1934 in Cresco, the son of Edward and Josephine (Wood) Peter of Lime Springs. Lloyd was baptized in the Lutheran Church and confirmed his faith in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. He attended elementary school in Lime Springs, Clarksville, and Cresco and graduated from Lime Springs High School in 1952. He attended one year at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

On June 6, 1954 he married Marian Sanborn.

Prior to and following his service in the U.S. Navy from 1957-1959, Lloyd worked with his father in the Lime Springs Texaco Station until he began driving truck for his uncle Ernest Peter as a tankwagon agent for Northern Iowa Oil Company. In 1977 he joined Stapelkamp Oil Company where he continued until his early retirement in 1998 due to his heart disability.

He was a council member and Sunday School teacher in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, a councilman and mayor of Lime Springs, and 22 years as a borad member of the Lime Springs Public Library. Recently he became a member of the Lime Springs American Legion Post # 545. He enjoyed being outdoors hunting or fishing. He loved playing cards, board games, and puzzles. His love of sports carried through in later years through his attendance at high school ballgames, Twins games, and Hawkeye football games.

He is survived by his wife Marian; five children: Becky Pahl of Lime Springs, Beth Kulow of Fort Wayne, IN, Margie Hunt of Colorado Springs, CO, Win of Nora Springs, and Barb Reicks of rural Cresco; 12 grandchildren; and one sister: Marian Lee of Beavercreek, OR.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Edward.

Linda Irvine

Funeral services for Linda Irvine of Easton, KS were held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 23 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church of Easton.

Linda, 43, died Thursday, July 18, 2002 at her home after a 10 year battle with breast cancer.

Linda L. Irvine was born November 6, 1958, the daughter of George and Leona (Rosonke) Herold in Cresco.

On August 16, 1980 she married LTC Jeffery L. Irvine (USA Ret.) in Cresco. Linda was the librarian at the Easton Primary School. She was a member of the St. Joseph of the Valley Catholic Church, and was a member of the Army family.

She is survived by her husband LTC Jeffery L. Irvine (USA Ret.); one son: Jeremy L. of Warrensburg, MO; one daughter: Lindsey L. Irvine at home; her mother: Leona Herold of Cresco; three brothers: Al of Cresco, Larry of Denver, CO, and Joe of Raymore, MO; and three sisters: Bonnie Blaylock of De Pere, WI, Janice Moehn of Ft. Madison, and Mary Martin of Kensington, MD.

Linda was preceded in death by one son: Justin L.; her father: George; and one sister: Sharon Herold.

Harris Vaala

Harris, 90, died Saturday, July 20, 2002 in Cresco.

Harris Theodore Vaala was born April 9, 1912 in Saude, the son of Theodore and Hannah (Natvig) Vaala.

Harris farmed near Saude with his brother Orin and sister Gladys for more than 50 years. He served with the U.S. Army during WW II, spending most of this time with the air corps in the Aleutian Islands.

He played amateur baseball for many years in and around Saude, and was a lifetime fan of the University of Iowa football and basketball teams.

He is survived by two sisters: Melba Robinson and Lillian Henry both of Cresco.

Harris was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Orin; two sisters: Gladys and an infant sister.

Ellwood Pettitt

Memorial services for Ellwood Pettitt of Riceville will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 4 at the Riceville United Methodist Church in Riceville with Rev. Michael Carey officiating.

Ellwood, 64, died Sunday, July 21, 2002 at the Baum Harmon Mercy Hospital in Primghar from a heart attack.

Ellwood Merle Pettitt was born September 22, 1937 in Lyle, MN, the son of Oliver George and Ila Marie (Anderson) Pettitt. He moved to Riceville in 1950 with his parents after having resided in Bolan, near St. Ansgar. He attended local schools and graduated from Riceville High School in 1956. In 1957 Ellwood joined the United States Army and served for two years in Germany as a cook with his Army Company.

In August of 1961, he opened Pettitt's Pantry. In March of 1967 he moved to the present location of Pettitt's Cafe. He retired in April of this year.

Ellwood received the Boy Scout Award of Merit, several Jaycee's awards, the Governor's Volunteers Award, and organized many fund raising events.

He was a member of the Riceville Methodist Church, having served as Church Treasurer and Sunday School Superintendent for many years.

He is survived by one sister: Donna Dawson of Paulina.

Ellwood was preceded in death by his parents.

Fred Hubka

Funeral services for Fred Hubka were held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 26 at Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating.

Fred, 84, died Monday, July 22, 2002 at the Evans Memorial Home of complications of pneumonia.

Fred Albert Hubka was born April 23, 1918 in Howard County, near Protivin, the son of Joseph and Anna (Tupy) Hubka. He attended the rural school and returned home to work on the farm.

On January 30, 1952 he married Doris Rice at the St. Joseph's Rectory by the Rev. Roman A. Schares. They made their home on the farm near Cresco until they retired and moved into Cresco.

He was a former member of the Farm Bureau, and the Wildlife Club. He was a life time member of the Knights of Columbus, and was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He loved the simple things such as a game of cards, watching Tiger Woods or eating fresh strawberries or sweet corn. He loved retelling the story of seeing two World Series; both George Brett and his Kansas City Royals and Kirby Puckett and his Minesota Twins.

He is survived by his wife Doris of Cresco; two daughters: Joyce Becker of rural Cresco and Ruth Hopkins of Prairie Village, KS; one son: David of Rochester, MN; six grandchildren; and two brothers: Joseph of rural Cresco and Edward of Protivin.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; one sister: Helen Prochaska; and two brothers: Leonard and Brother Anthony (Clarence).

Charles Bakke

Funeral services for Charles Bakke of rural Lanesboro, MN were held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 26 at Elstad Lutheran Church in rural Lanesboro with Rev. Peter Huggenvik officiating.

Charles, 72, died Monday, July 22, 2002 at his home of congestive heart failure.

Charles H. Bakke was born March 6, 1930 in La Crosse, WI and graduated from Lanesboro High School in 1948.

On September 22, 1952 he married Catherine Blaser at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco.

He was a former member of the Elstad lutheran Church Council and was a Twins and Vikings fan.

He is survived by his wife Catherine; two daughters: Sharon Wissing of Preston, MN and Susan Buss of Waverly; two sons: Duane and David, both of Lanesboro; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters: LaVonne McCabe of Lanesboro and Rosalie Hongerholt of Fargo, ND.

Erwin Marshall

Funeral services for Erwin Marshall were held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 25 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco with Rev. Gary Olson, chaplain at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home in Cedar Falls officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were son-in-laws: Norris Langan, Larry Beaton, Richard Jensen, Sam Bailey, Jerold Storke, and grandson, Chris Langan.

Erwin, 89, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002 at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home in Cedar Falls.

Erwin Willard Marshall was born February 5, 1913 in Howard County, near Alta Vista, the son of Frederick and Janet (Lockie) Marshall. He attended the Cresco schools and graduated from Cresco High School in 1930. He worked on the family farm outside of Cresco until he started working for Howard County Road Maintenance in 1940. Erwin was appointed maintenance supervisor in 1958 and remained in that position until his retirement in 1978. He also owned and operated the Cresco Dairy Queen with his family from 1958 until 1977.

On November 23, 1940 he married Irene Barthelme in Cresco.

Erwin was active in the Cresco community after his retirement. He served on the Park Board of the City of Cresco. The train restoration was one of his major projects. He also was past president of the Howard County Historical Society.

He is survived by his seven children: twins: Janet Langan and Jean Beaton, both of Waterloo, David of Olympia, WA, John of Topeka, KS, Linda Jensen of St. Charles, MO, Marilyn Bailey of Cedar Rapids, and Sharon Storke of Wisconsin Rapids, WI; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Erwin was preceded in death by his wife Irene on April 20, 2000; his parents; two sisters: Lois River and Elizabeth Martin; and one brother: Harold.

Norbert Drilling

Funeral services for Norbert Drilling of Bloomington, IN were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Bloomington with Rev. Charles Chesebrough officiating.

Interment was in Valhalla Memory Gardens in Bloomington. Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, Greene & Harrell Chapel handled the arrangements.

Norbert, 79, died Thursday, July 25, 2002 at the Bloomington Hospital after a brief stay for rehabilitation at Bell Trace Nursing Home.

Norbert G. Drilling was born September 10, 1922 in Cresco, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Drilling.

On November 22, 1952 he married Patricia Dunn at Iowa State University in Ames.

Norbert served in the U.S. Army during World War II, seeing combat in France, Italy, and Germany. He was a member of the Army Reserves for 23 years, retiring with the rank of Major. He received the Bronze Star for duty in combat.

Mr. and Mrs. Drilling moved to Indianapolis in 1952 and to Bloomington in 1965.

He was retired after working as an electrical engineer for RCA in Indianapolis and Bloominton. He also worked for Bearcat in Indianapolis. He received his degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State University in Ames.

He enjoyed traveling, his computer, and working in his back yard.

He is survived by his wife Patricia of Bloomington; and two sisters: Ruth Kuhn of Cedar Rapids and Grace Kandler of Woodbury, MN.

Norbert was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Donald.

Arthur Pecinovsky

Funeral services for Arthur Pecinovsky were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 29 at the Holy Trinity Church in Protivin with Rev. Raphael Ludwig officiating.

Interment was in Holy Trinity Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Dean Hubka, Rita Baird, Deb Markin, Doug Pecinovsky, Kenneth Pecinovsky, and Scott Pecinovsky. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Arthur, 73, died Thursday, July 25, 2002 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco.

Arthur Charles Pecinovsky was born June 21, 1929 in Cresco, the son of Carl and Clara (Martinek) Pecinovsky. He atttended the Protivin school. Art enlisted in the Marines on February 26, 1954. He transferred to the Reserves and served until 1962.

On August 24, 1968 he married Glenda M. Hugeback at Sacred Heart Parish in Manly. Art was a farmer and lived his whole life in Howard County. He farmed until 1993, then helped his nephew until his health wouldn't allow it.

He was a member of the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, and Catholic Workman. He was an avid card player.

He is survived by his wife Glenda of Protivin; one daughter: Eva Pecinovsky of Protivin; and two sisters: Abbie Novak of Protivin and Pauline Hubka of Waucoma.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Donald.

Helen Flugge

Memorial services for Helen Flugge of Lime Springs were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Robert Hupp officiating.

Interment was in the Howard Center Cemetery in rural Lime Springs. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Helen, 71, died Friday, July 26, 2002 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah.

Helen Mary Flugge was born July 14, 1931 at Mason City, the daughter of Michael and Helen (Pipin) Maskarina. She attended school at Mason City.

On September 21, 1947 she married Ralph Flugge at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They moved to Charles City until 1961, and then they moved to the Cresco, Lime Springs area. She lived mostly on an acreage.

She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and its circles. She liked to bake, sew, and play cards with the grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Ralph; six children: Linda Dvorak of Iowa City, Larry of Cresco, Sue Thomas of McChesney Park, IL, Ralph L., Randy, and Steve all of Cresco; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters: Mary Kelley of Mason City, Marjorie Nelson of Forest City, and Anna Maskarina of Minneapolis, MN.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother: George.

Sandra Nelson

Sandra, 43, died Sunday, July 28, 2002 as a result of a motorcycle-deer accident near Spillville.

Dorothy Rifenrath

Dorothy, 80, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at her home of cancer.

Dorothy Mae Rifenrath was born June 30, 1922 in Glendive, MT, the daughter of Henry and Selma Rifenrath. Her family moved to Brainerd, MN when Dorothy was seven. She graduated from Washington High School in Brainerd in 1940 and entered the business world in Minneapolis, MN whre she resided from 1940 to 1988. Dorothy began her career with F.W. Woolworth Co. as an accountant in 1941. in 1945, she joined Thiss Associates, Inc. as an accountant, was promoted to manager of the retail store and eventually became a partner. in 1971, Dorothy sold her interest in the Thiss business and co-founded a management consulting firm, Reuss, Thiss and Co., and in 1973, Med-Care Associates, a nursing home management company. In 1976 she received her Health Care Administrator's license. She retired in 1988 and moved to Florida in 1990.

She is survived by two sisters: Irene Bertetta of South San Francisco, CA and Mary McGuire of Brainerd, MN and Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers: Henry, Erven, and Carl.
