Arthur Sjobakken

Memorial services for Arthur "Art" Sjobakken of New Hampton were held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 5 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton with Rev. David Bergstrom and Rev. Kevin Frey officiating.

Interment was in the New Hampton City Cemetery in New Hampton. Honorary pallbearers were: Dan Fliger, Jim Snyder, Carroll Oelke, Harlan Pose, Kurt Hemesath, Bob Rigler, Joe Kerwick, Linus Bodensteiner, Dan Klenske, Dale Gates, and Duane Nelson. Hugeback Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Arthur, 78, died Thursday, May 2, 2002 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo of natural causes.

Arthur P. Sjobakken was born May 3, 1923 in New Hamtpon, the son of Rudolph and Carrie (Otteson) Sjobakken. He attended school in New Hampton.

On January 29, 1942 he married Beryl M. Bartz at St. John's Lutheran Parsonage in Charles City. Art entered the U.S. Navy on April 13, 1943 where he served as an Aviation Ordanceman Second Class until he was honorably discharged on December 13, 1945. After the war, he worked four years for the former Oliver Tractor Co. in Charles City and then went to work for the City Clerk's Office in New Hampton. In 1954 he began working for the First National Bank of New Hampton until he retired in 1968.

He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife Beryl; one son: Paul of Waterloo; one daughter: Gayle Kearney of Des Moines; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister: Sigrid Neff of Sedona, AZ.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Orvin, Rudolph, and Walter; and one sister: Doris Treat Bartz.


Leone Ernst

Funeral services for Leone Ernst were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 6 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Robert Hupp officiating.

Pallbearers were her granddaughters: Lori Truka, Suzanne Smith, Gayleen Moellers, Lisa Bina, Trisha Johnston, Melissa Bigalk, and Allyson Jasper. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Leone, 83, died Friday, May 3, 2002.

Leone Lydia Ernst was born March 22, 1919 near Sumner, the daughter of Ernest and Anna Ladwig. She was baptized in the Methodist Church. In 1936 she graduated from Ridgeway High School.

On February 3, 1939 she married Arnold Ernst at her mother's farm near Ridgeway. They farmed most of their life and when they retired from farming, Leone drove a school bus for Howard-Winneshiek School District for several years.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

She enjoyed being outside caring for her garden and lawn. She also enjoyed traveling, fishing, sewing, quilting, and cooking.

She is survived by four daughters: Sandra Peter, Linda Bigalk, Helen Schmauss, all of Cresco and Nancy Jasper of Birkenfeld, OR; seven granddaughters; ten great-grandchildren; one sister: Marion Symonds of Decorah; and one brother: Elmer Ladwig of Cresco.

Leone was preceded in death by her husband Arnold; her parents; one sister: Arlene Rider; and one brother: Arlis Ladwig.


L.J. Whalen

Funeral services for L.J. Whalen of rural Harmony, MN were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8 at Assumption Catholic Church in Canton, MN with Rev. Steven Peterson officiating.

Interment was in St. Agnes Catholic Cemetery at Plymouth Rock, rural Cresco. Pallbearers were grandsons: Michael Roelofs, Matthew Engesser, Jeffrey Whalen, Jacob Whalen, Andrew Engesser, and David Needham. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

L.J., 78, died Saturday, May 4, 2002 in his sleep at Green Lea Manor in Mabel, MN where he was recovering from surgery.

L.J. Whalen was born July 17, 1923 in Canton, MN, the son of Lenis Edward and M. Loretta (Ryan) Whalen.

On the deck of the USS Cummings 365 he witnessed the air raid at Pearl Harbor . His South Pacific Naval duty lasted 54 months where he served as an electrician during World War II.

On January 16, 1947 he married Alice Jean Budraka in Sioux City. They settled at their present home on the State Line road in 1960.

He enjoyed his work as an electrician, playing cards, dancing, and raising Belgian horses.

He is survived by his wife Alice; his children: Jan Roelofs of Cedar Rapids, Dr. Len Whalen of Zephyrhills, FL, Ralph of Taiwan, John of Harmony, Mary Engesser of Spring Valley, MN, Karen Needham of Houston, TX, Ruth Vaske of LeMars, and Laura Thomas of Willow, AK; 24 grandchildren; two brothers: Dean Whalen of Northglenn, CO and Loren Armstrong of Waterloo; and one sister: Sybil Dennehey of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers: Arden, Ryan, Neil, and Robert.


Mervin Lysing

Funeral services for Mervin Lysing were held at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8 at Grace Church in Edina.

Mervin Norris Lysing was born January 12, 1915 in Hitterdal, MN, the son of Gustav and Elizabeth Lysing. He received his B.A. degree in 1937 from Moorhead State College, Moorhead, MN.

In July 1940 he married Lois Jeske.

He served as a Lieutenant in the Navy for three years aboard U.S.S. Pocomoke.

He played a short time with the Lawrence Welk Orchestra and was an accompanist for Peggy Lee. He was Director of Marching and Concert Bands at St. Louis Park, MN, and directed bands in Cresco for 12 years before that.

He is survived by his wife Lois; one daughter: Susan Hickok; one son: Michael; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; four sisters: Estelle Sather, Grace Stordahl, Alice Keuhnel, Norma Sannes; and one brother: Grant.

Mervin was preceded in death by his parents; and six of his brothers and sisters.


Joseph Barloon

Funeral services for Joseph Barloon of Little Turkey were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 9 at Assumption Catholic Church in Little Turkey with Rev. John Moser officiating.

Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Little Turkey. His wife and children placed the pall. Pallbearers were his six sons. Hugeback Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Joseph, 72, died Monday, May 6, 2002 at his home of natural causes.

Joseph Raymond Barloon was born April 6, 1930 in Little Turkey, the son of Frank and Anna (Riha) Barloon. He attended Utica #7 country school near Little Turkey. On February 6, 1952, Joe enlisted in the United States Marine Crop. where he served until being honorably discharged on February 5, 1954.

On April 27, 1955 he married Alice Kuhn at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. They farmed on the Barloon farm where Joe was born and currently lived. Joe was a Turkey Valley School Board member for 13 years where he also served as president; a director of the Iowa Association of School Boards from 1979-1982, a director on Farm Credit Services, a member of the Federal Land Bank, a lifelong active member of Assumption Catholic Church in Little Turkey, Pheasants Forever, the Lawler Redman American Legion Post #279 and the Alta Vista Paul Johann VFW Post #4069.

He enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his wife Alice; six sons: Keith of Burlington, Ken of Altoona, Denny, Donny, Gary, and Jerry, all of Little Turkey; one daughter: Janet Gage of New Hampton; 11 grandchildren; and two sisters: Delores Schwade of Cresco and Helen Wenthold of Calmar.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers: Edward, Sr. and Arnold.


Roberta Gaffey

Funeral services for Roberta Gaffey of Riceville were held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 at the Conway Funeral Home in Riceville with Rev. Michael Carey officiating.

Honorary pallbearers were: Murray Holmes, Don Adams, Roger Lenz, and Roger Minnis.

Roberta, 79, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Roberta Jean Gaffey was born May 7, 1923 in Erie, PA, the daughter of Howard and Aline (Davis) Cox. She attended school in Erie and graduated from high school in 1941. She furthered her education by attending nursing school in Meadville, PA and became a registered nurse.

On April 15, 1944 she married Paul Gaffey at Buckley Field, CO.

Roberta worked as a nurse on Air Force bases and she was director of nursing at the Riceville Hospital and Stacyville nursing home. She also worked as a hospice nurse after she retired.

She enjoyed the hills of Pennsylvania where she grew up skiing and sledding.

She is survived by her husband Paul of Riceville; four sons: Michael J. of Grand Forks, ND, Dennis of Kennewick, WA, Mark of Riceville, and Brian of Riceville; four daughters: Paula Dinger of the Federated States of Micronesia, Maureen Gaffey of St. Paul, MN, Karen Schofield of Riceville, and Theresa Gaffey of St. Paul; 10 grandchildren; and two sisters: Lila LaBella of Eldred, PA and Nancy Osmer of Kane, PA.

Roberta was preceded in death by one son: Thomas; one grandson; and her parents.


Richard Pretasky

Funeral services for Richard Pretasky of Hot Springs, AR were held at Gross Funeral Home Chapel.

Interment was in Morning Star Cemetery. Pallbearers were his grandchildren: Ted Weisman, Chanda Vopava, James D. Pretasky, Stacy Axe, Joe R. Vopava, Dawna Axe and Amber Pretasky. Honorary pallbearers were: Jim Hutzel, Don and Mike Hall, Dennis Axe, Joe K. Vopava, Pamela Pretasky, Bud Chambers, friends of the Aristocrat, friends of Morning Star and Faith United Methodist Churches, Levi Hospice, Doctors Stan Josef, John Sorrels, Steve Bodemann and Hot Springs Internal Medicine.

Richard, 69, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 in Hot Springs.

Richard Donald Pretasky was born November 22, 1932 in LaCrosse, WI, the son of Frank and Cora (Stair) Pretasky. Dick was a graduate of California College of Mortuary Science in Los Angeles and was a Funeral Director for 25 years, being licensed in Nevada, Iowa, and California before retirement in 1986.

He was a strong supporter of organ donation and was a member of Morning Star United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife Patricia; his children: Paula Axe, Dennis of Las Vegas, NV, Laetitia Vopava of Ridgeway, and Don of Riceville; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers: Robert of LaCrosse, WI and Ron of Las Vegas, NV; and two sisters: Patricia Tabbert of Iron River, WI and Susan Keselburg of Sacramento, CA.


Mildred Moore

Funeral services for Mildred "Milly" Moore of Riceville were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14 at the United Methodist Church in Riceville with Rev. Michael Carey officiating.

Interment was in Osage Cemetery in Osage. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Milly, 71, died Friday, May 10, 2002 at her residence in Riceville after an extended illness.

Mildred Mae Moore was born November 1, 1930 in Sheffield, the daughter of Roy and Minnie (Fistler) Randall. The family moved to Osage where she attended school and graduated from Osage High School in 1949.

On July 10, 1949 she married Charles Moore at the First Baptist Church in Osage.

Milly was active in her church teaching Bible School, Sunday School and was a member of the First Baptist Ladies Circle. They moved to New Haven and then to a farm by Riceville.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Riceville and taught Sunday School, belonged to U.M.W. and evening circle.

She is survived by her husband Charles; one son: Ed of Riceville; one daughter: Barbara Voight of Osage; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her mother: Minnie Randall of Osage; three brothers: Ransom of Cedar Rapids, Earl of Waterloo, and David of Osage; and four sisters: Ruth Molstad and Rose Tobin both of Mason City, Doris Erickson of Minneapolis, MN, and Bev Boehmer of Osage.

Milly was preceded in death by her father; and one brother: Merle


.Elmer Ladwig

Funeral services for Elmer "Bud" Ladwig were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 16 at First Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Gary K. Lee officiating.

Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Elmer, 78, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002.

Elmer J. Ladwig was born July 16, 1923 in Winneshiek County. He lived on the family farm near Ridgeway and on August 21, 1946 he married Lillian Hanni. They spent their first years on the farm, in 1959 they moved to Ridgeway to begin their hardware business and in 1966 moved to Cresco where they established Ladwig Plumbing. Bud retired in 1992.

He is survived by his wife Lillian; his children: Dale of Plymouth, MN; one daughter: Susan Diddams of the West Indies; three grandchildren; and one sister: Marion Symonds of Decorah.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Arlis; and two sisters: Arlene Rider and Leone Ernst.


Hattie Feather

Funeral services for Hattie Feather of Riceville were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 20 at the Riceville United Methodist Church in Riceville with Rev. Michael Carey officiating.

Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Hattie, 87, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at the St. Olaf Hospital in Austin, MN after an extended illness.

Hattie Feather was born January 29, 1915, the daughter of William G. and Anna C. (Schroeder) Swyter. She attended a country school and graduated from Britt High School in 1932. Hattie furthered her education by attending Britt Jr. College and going on to receive a B.A. degree in education from Upper Iowa University in Fayette in 1969.

On July 17, 1938 she married Eugene Feather in Pennsylvania.

She taught social studies in the Riceville School system for 22 years and was an active member in the Riceville United Methodist Church where she served as financial secretary for 10 years, served as secretary and leader of U.M.W. She was a leader in 4-H Clubs and enjoyed quilting.

She is survived by one daughter: Mary McRoberts; one son: Bill, both of LeRoy; four grandchildren; seven great-granddaughters; and one brother: Bill of Humboldt.

Hattie was preceded in death by her husband Eugene in 1990; his parents; four brothers; and one sister.


Lula Brewer

Funeral services for Lula Brewer of St. Albans, WV were held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 19 at Gatens Funeral Chapel with Pastor Dorris Walls officiating.

Interment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Lula, 61, died Thursday, May 16, 2002 at home.

Lula G. Brewer was born July 31, 1940 the daughter of Warren R. Wade and Lena R. (Hensley) Wade.

She was a member of TOPS WV 395, St. Albans, and KOPS Blue and Gold Key Society.

She is survived by one daughter: Patricia A. Ennis of Pennsauken, NJ; one son: James Jr. of Scott Depot; three grandsons; one step-grandson; four sisters: Lena Skenes of Burlington, NC, Linda Maxwell of Richlands, NC, Brenda Kay Douglas of Cresco, and Betty Jo Fountain of Richlands, NC; two brothers: James of Scott Dept and Warren of Jacksonville, NC.

Lula was preceded in death by her husband James N. Brewer Sr.; and her parents.


Darold Ranc

Funeral services for Darold Ranc of Mason City, formerly of Cresco, were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22 at St. James Lutheran Church with Rev. Scott Duffus officiating.

Interment was in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery. Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel handled the arrangements.

Darold, 53, died Saturday, May 18, 2002 at his home.

Darold Frank Ranc was born June 1, 1948 in Cresco, the son of Frank and Florence (Kilby) Ranc. He attended school in Cresco and later worked on vehicles and performed various mechanical work.

On June 28, 1997 he married Faye Stump in Mason City.

He enjoyed his mechanical work, being outdoors, and occasionally gambling.

He is survived by his wife Faye and her children; four brothers: LeRoy Linderman, Ronald Linderman, Dale Linderman, and Francis Ranc; and two sisters: Lucille Crom and Alice Ranc.

Darold was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Robert Linderman and Donnie Linderman (in infancy); and one sister: Pauline Espinoza.


Kenneth Klimesh

Funeral services for Kenneth Klimesh of rural Ridgeway were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 18 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating.

Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in Spillville. Pallbearers were : Paul Jirak, Brett Bednar, Dave Riehle, Tony Halverson, Paul Klimesh, Brad Koenig, Steve Bouska, Dave Beastrom, and Ryan Christensen. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Kenneth, 44, died Thursday, May 16, 2002 at his home of cancer.

Kenneth Walter Klimesh was born December 2, 1957 in Decorah, the son of Walter and Florine (Herold) Klimesh. Ken attended school at St. Wenceslaus in Spillville and graduated from South Winneshiek High School in 1976.

On September 9, 1978 he married Patricia Jirak at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah. He farmed the home farm and worked at Camcar from 1976 till 2000 and at Anundsen Publishing since June of 2000.

He enjoyed farming and hunting.

He was a lifelong member of the St. Wenceslaus Parish.

He is survived by his wife Pat of Ridgeway; three daughters: Jennifer and Michelle of Ridgeway and Karla of Calmar; one son: Jason of Ridgeway; his mother: Florine Elsbernd and husband Romuald of Spillville; four sisters: Sally Koenig of Berlin, WI, Sherry Bouska of Ridgeway, Peggy Beastrom of Cedar Rapids, and Jean Bednar of Hiawatha; one brother: Paul of Winterset; and his grandmother: Gertrude Herold of Decorah.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his father: Walter in 1994.


Geraldine Korbel

Funeral services for Geraldine Korbel were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 20 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church with Rev. John Hemann officiating.

Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Lourdes. Honorary pallbearers were: Mary Jane Leach, Shirley Rethamel, Marcella Haskovec, Pat Rethamel, Mike Foley, and John Wacha Jr. Pall bearers were: Eldred Rethamel, Sylvester Opat, Troy Foley, Scott Balk, Paul Sir, and Ron Balk. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Geraldine, 74, died Thursday, May 16, 2002 at her home.

Geraldine Marie Korbel was born April 14, 1928 in Howard County, on the farm southwest of Lime Springs, the daughter of William and Emma (Opat) Korbel. She attended the rural school and graduated from Cresco High School. After schooling, she started working as a nurses aide in Cresco, Rochester, and moved to California to work and eventually moved back to Iowa and worked at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. While working in Cedar Rapids, she came home to help farm in the summer. She later moved home to help care for her mother and brother.

She was baptized and confirmed in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. She was a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Altar and Rosary Society.

She was very fond of her yellow lab dog, Dixie.

Geraldine was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother: "Bud".


Phyllis Robinson

Funeral services for Phyllis Robinson of Cresco will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, May 22, at First Lutheran Church in Cresco with interment in the Saratoga Cemetery at Saratoga.

Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday with a Legion Auxiliary Memorial Service at 5:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services on Wednesday.

Phyllis, 75, died Sunday, May 19, 2002 at her home.

Lawrence Goetsch

Funeral services for Lawrence Goetsch were held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21 at Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating.

Interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery, rural Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Lawrence, 70, died Friday, May 17, 2002 at Rochester Methodist Hospital.

Lawrence Goetsch was born May 8, 1932 on the family farm, the son of Sylvia Alice (Grabau) and William F. Goetsch. He attended country school until the sixth grade. He graduated from high school in Cresco in 1950.

On May 8, 1957 he married Elizabeth Schmidt at St. John's Catholic Church.

He farmed all his life in Howard County raising Hereford beef cattle.

He enjoyed reading and restoring antique tractors.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth; seven daughters: Sylvia Moe of Rochester, MN, Patsy Bronner of Cresco, Lorraine Goetsch of Cresco, Nancy Goetsch of New Hampton, Mary Beth Schroeder of Rochester, Laura Becker of Stewartville, MN, and Lois Leifeld of Cresco; four grandchildren; one sister: Vera Easler of Des Moines; and one brother: William of Lime Springs.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents and one sister: Mona Wohlsdorf.


Phyllis Robinson

Funeral services for Phyllis Robinson were held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22 at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Gary K. Lee officiating.

Interment was in Saratoga Cemetery at Saratoga. Honorary pallbearers were: Dennis Yoder, Ronnie Norman, Rick Wangen, Dean Hron, Dan Mast, and Brian Schrage. Pallbearers were: Wayne Carolan, Buddy Borland, Bud McKee, Duane Gunhus, Jamie Reinhart, and Bob Davies. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Phyllis, 75, died Sunday, May 19, 2002 at her home after a brief illness.

Phyllis I. Robinson was born February 24, 1927 in Hampton, the daughter of Albert and Carrie Norman. They moved to Riceville in 1941.

On December 23, 1945 she married Leonard Robinson.

She is survived by her husband Leonard; three children: Sharyl Cline of Chester, VA, Greg of California, MO, and Debi Robinson of Newnan, GA; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother: Clifford of Riceville; and five sisters: Lucille Duenow of St. Ansgar, Marlys Falck of Chester, Alberta Friedrich of Elma, Joann Menken of Greene, and Janice Stevenson of Melbourne, FL.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister: Marcella Ficken.


George Lammers

Funeral services for George Lammers of Dayton, OH, formally of Elma, were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma with Rev. John W. Hemann officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery. The family placed the pall. Pallbearers were his nephews. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

George, 74, died Thursday, May 23, 2002 in Dayton.

George Lammers was born November 14, 1927 in Elma, the eldest child of Herman and Anna Mae (Benson) Lammers. He attended and graduated from the I.C. Academy in Elma. Following school he entered the U.S. Army to serve in W W II.

On June 21, 1952 he married Patricia Determan.

He is survived by six children: Barbara Loe of Stillwater, MN, Ted of Dayton, Sue Richeson of Waxhaw, NC, John of Dayton, Tom of Columbus, OH, and Ruth Lammers of Palatine, IL; eight grandchildren; and one sister: Terrie Kahn of Mason City.

George was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers: Jack and David.


Lanette Helm

Funeral services for Lanette Helm of Decorah were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 27 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, rural Decorah.

Schluter Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Lanette, 38, died Thursday, May 23, 2002 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital from cancer.

Lanette Jo Helm was born May 4, 1964 in Charles City, the daughter of Bernard and Vivian (Holst) Gielenfeldt. She attended and graduated from Nashua High School in 1982.

On November 22, 1986 she married Scott Helm in Charles City. Lanette did ministry with the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses for many years.

She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in rural Decorah. She enjoyed painting and gardening.

She is survived by her husband Scott of Decorah; her mother: Vivian Gielenfeldt of New Hampton; one brother: Larry of Tracy, CA; and one sister: Cindy Davis of Port St. Lucy, FL.

Lanette was preceded in death by her father Bernard.


Glenice Ekanger

Glenice Ekanger of Minneapolis, MN was cremated and no services were held.

Inurnment was in Dawn Valley Cemetery in Bloomington, MN.

Glenice, 91, died Thursday, May 23, 2002 at her home im Minneapolis, MN of natural causes.

Glenice was a former resident of the Saratoga and Chester area where she was born and raised. She received her education in the rural schools.

On June 12, 1936 Glenice Kelsey married Lloyd Ekanger in Cresco. They farmed in Howard County and moved to Osage to retire in 1970, and after the death of her husband she moved to Minneapolis to be closer to her family.

She is survived by seven grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Opal Klingsheim of California and Thea Gould of Colorado.

Glenice was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd on June 18, 1994; and one daughter: Darlene Clausen.


Vera Engelhardt 

Funeral services for Vera Engelhardt formerly of Charles City, were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Charles City with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating.

Interment was in Lime Springs Cemetery, Lime Springs. Fullerton Hage Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Vera, 87, died Thursday, May 23, 2002 at Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home.

Vera Helen Ella Engelhardt was born July 19, 1914 in rural Howard Co., the daughter of Richard and Anna (Reinhardt) Martens.

On August 20, 1932 she married Abner John Engelhardt in Preston, MN. They farmed for many years.

She loved reading the newspaper, watching and feeding the birds and squirrels. She also enjoyed baking and tending to her flower gardens.

She is survived by her children: Darryl of Garrison, Vicky Davies of Charles City, Nancy Howland of Davenport, Joanie Lukes of Washburn, Debra Foster of Greene; 25 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Vera was preceded in death by her husband Abner; two sons: Arlyn and Jerry, Sr.; two daughters: Judith Harrington and infant daughter Peggy; her parents; two brothers; and two sisters.


Bernice King

Funeral services for Bernice King of Elma were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville with Rev. Miles Grismore officiating.

Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

Bernice, 84, died Friday, May 24, 2002 at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Elma.

Bernice was born April 8, 1918 in Clayton County, the daughter of Frederick and Selma (Lenth) Seidel. She attended local schools.

On October 9, 1940 she married Marreld King at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband Marreld of Elma; four sons: Frederick of Charles City, Duane of Floyd, Wayne of Pensacola, FL, and Cecil of Robins; two daughters: Leona Parish of Cedar Rapids and Darlys Rogers of Osage; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one brother: Harold of Saratoga; and one sister: Milda Willis of Mason City.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother: Delbert.


C. Inez Dahle 

Funeral services for C. Inez Dahle of Ridgeway were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29 at Madison Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway with Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson officiating.

Interment was in Madison Lutheran Cemetery in rural Ridgeway. Pallbearers were : Lance Dahle, Gaylen Hovden, Gary Hove, Gerald Pecinovsky, Kenneth Qualley, and Tom Schott. Fjelstul Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Inez, 100, died Saturday, May 25, 2002 at Cresco Care Center where she had been a resident since October 1991.

Clara Inez Dahle was born February 26, 1902 in Sumner Township, the daughter of John and Anna (Anderson) Albertson. She was baptized at Lincoln Lutheran Church on March 31, 1902 where she confirmed her faith on May 14, 1916. She attended rural school in Sumner.

On January 14, 1925 she married Homer O. Dahle at the Madison-Lincoln Parsonage. They farmed in Glenwood, Madison, and Lincoln Townships before moving to Ridgeway in 1963.

She was active in the Madison Church Ladies Aid and Bethany Circle. Her interests were cooking, sewing, crocheting, quilting, embroidery, and playing the piano.

She is survived by one daughter: Irene Schott of Los Alamos, NM; one son: John of Ridgeway; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; and one sister: Pearl Soreide of Decorah.

Inez was preceded in death by her husband Homer on December 17, 1974; one grandson; her parents; one brother: Arthur Albertson; and three sisters: Edith Dahle, Geneva Bakken, and Amy Ray.


Ruth Gansen

A memorial gathering will be held for Ruth Gansen of Riceville from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25 in the fellowship hall of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville.

A private burial was held at Riverside Cemetery in Riceville. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ruth, 101, died at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Ruth G. Gansen was born March 3, 1901 in rural Elma, the daughter of William and Ida (Cochran) Bunston. She attended local schools.

On October 29, 1928 she married Mathias A. Gansen in Elma. Ruth spent her entire life in Howard and Mitchell Counties farming with her husband. They were also owners of a restaurant.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Mathias in 1997; one brother: Charles; and one sister: Emily Fogle.


Leo Heying

Funeral services for Leo Heying of Alta Vista were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 3 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista with Rev. John Hemann officiating.

Interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista. Leo's granddaughters placed the pall. Pallbearers were his grandsons and his granddaughters were honorary pallbearers. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Leo, 91, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at Colonial Manor in Elma of natural causes.

Leo John Heying was born May 13, 1911 at St. Cecelia, the son of John Herman and Christina (Glaser) Heying. He attended St. Williams Catholic School in Alta Vista.After his schooling he worked as a farm laborer for the neighbors for a short time before riding the freight train to California, where he stayed for one year. When he returned to the Alta Vista area he worked as a farm laborer.

On January 11, 1938 he married Velda Webb at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista. They farmed in the Alta Vista area until moving to New Hampton in 1948. The couple returned to the family farm near Alta Vista in December of 1951. The couple moved to Alta Vista in 1974 where he was residing.

He was a member of the St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista. He enjoyed going downtown to play cards, attending the Senior Citizen lunches, and watching the Chicago Cubs.

He is survived by two daughters: Lois Vorwald of Toledo and Mary Elliott of Charles City; five sons: John of Conway, AR, Bob of Kewanee, IL, Edward of Chandler, AZ, Leon of Cedar Rapids, and Thomas of Elma; 22 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two brothers: Bernard of Benton, WI and Billy Gourley of San Jacinto, CA; and two sisters: Rosie Bach of Beloit, WI and Lillian Osterman of Garrison, MN.

Leo was preceded in death by his wife Velda on April 10, 1998; two grandsons; his parents; three brothers: Charlie, Harold, and Joseph; and one sister: Angela Marshall.


Elenor Wilkinson

Cremation arrangements and a private memorial service in Cresco will be arranged by the Lindstrom Funeral Home for Elenor Wilkinson.

Elenor, 85, died Friday, May 31, 2002 at Azalea Trace in Pensacola, FL.

Elenor (Elly) M. Wilkinson was born on May 5, 1917 in Cresco, the daughter of James and Amy (Barnes) Sobolik. She graduated from Cresco High School in 1934. She attended Grinnell College, and served during World War II in the Red Cross Corps in Panama.

On June 19, 1946 she married Dr. Paul F. Wilkinson in Chicago, IL. She lived in San Diego, while Dr. Wilkinson served in the Korean Conflict, and LaCrosse, WI while he worked at the Gundersen Clinic.The couple then settled in Rockford, IL. After her husband retired in 1982, they moved to Pensacola, until they moved to Azalea Trace in 1998.

She is survived by her husband Dr. Paul Wilkinson; and one sister: Helen M. Bouska of Cresco.

Elenor was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister: Alice Thies.


Obed Lee

Funeral services for Obed Lee were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 3 at Orleans Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway with Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson officiating.

Interment was in Orleans Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers were : Nathan Lee, Kevin Lee, Jason Lee, Andrew Olson, Rock Tuchek, and Dean Quandahl. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Obed, 87, died Friday, May 31, 2002 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County.

Obed Alexander Lee was born October 25, 1914 in Benton County near Walford, the son of Oliver and Thea (Lindanger-Johnson) Lee. He was baptized on November 15, 1914 and confirmed on December 30, 1928 at the Lutheran Church in Norway. Obed listed in the U.S. Army Air Corp in 1942 and was discharge in 1945.

On August 26, 1951 he married Sylvia Bentley. Obed farmed in the Norway area and also in the Ridgeway area.

He is survived by his wife Sylvia; two sons: Gary of Schaumburg, IL and David of Decatur, IL; three grandsons; one sister: June Tow of Walford; and one brother: Kenneth of Norway.

Obed was preceded in death by one son: Steven; his parents; and one brother: Oliver.
