James Hyke

Funeral services for James E. Hyke of Lourdes will be held Thursday, May 4, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes with the Rev. Roger R. Rethamel officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery with Jeremy Hyke, Brian Riley, Franics Nibaur, Robert Flaherty, Tom Nehl and Rick Bollman serving as pall bearers. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. today at Conway Funeral Home in Elma where there will be a 4:00 p.m. rosary and a 7:00 p.m. scripture service. Visitation is also an hour before services at the church.

James, 69, died Monday, May 1, 2000 of natural causes at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

James Edward Hyke was born September 2, 1930 near Lourdes in the home of his parents, Adolph and Millie (Marik) Hyke. He attended the Lourdes school.

On April 16, 1951 he married Arlene Nibaur at Our Lady of Lourdes Church by Father Noonan. Jim and Arlene lived all their married life in Lourdes where they farmed until ill health forced Jim into retirement. He worked part time in maintenance for the Lourdes church and cemetery grounds.

Jim enjoyed gardening and fishing.

He is survived by is wife, Arlene; two daughters, Deb Riley of New Hampton and Ann Ollendieck of Ridgeway; one son, Tim Hyke of Cresco; eight grandchildren; one brother, John of New Auburn, WI; four sisters, Margaret Fogarty and Everista Williams, both of Cedar Rapids, Virginia Nehl of Waterloo, and Mary Bollman of Cresco.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Betty Hyke; and two brothers, Tom and Raymond

Lucy Drew

Funeral services for Lucy Drew of Decorah were held Friday, May 5, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah. The Rev. Gary Krapfl officiated. Interment was in St. Benedict’s Catholic Cemetery in Decorah. Pall bearers were: John Lubke, Jerry Dvorak, David Mitchell, Tom Mitchell, Steve Dvorak, and Craig Ellingson. French & Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Lucy, 90, died Monday, May 1, 2000 at the Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton following congestive heart failure.

Lucy Marie Drew was born June 25, 1909 the daughter of Michael and Mary Jane (Sexton) Drew on a farm near Decorah, where she lived all her life. Lucy attended Madison Township School, Decorah High School and the Gates Business College in Waterloo.

She was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters of America and the Farm Bureau.

Her entire life was spent helping her brother farm and care for her parents and siblings.

She enjoyed gardening, flowers and especially the companionship of her dog, Mugsy. Lucy spent the last eight months at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Elma.

Lucy was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters: Catherine Drew, Genevieve McCabe, Grace Bouska, Bea Drew and Loretta Mitchell; three brothers: William, Francis and Thomas in infancy.

Sally Pogose

Funeral services for Sally Pogose of St. Paul, MN, formerly of Elma, were held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 6 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in St. Paul, MN. Private interment was in Calvary Cemetery in St. Paul. Kessler & Maguire Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Sally, 90, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000 in St. Paul, MN.

Sally B. Pogose was born October 11, 1909 in Elma, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Bucholtz) Ball.

Sally is survived by two sisters: Rosella Fausnaugh and Gertrude Hedricks; and one brother: Orville.

Sally was preceded in death by her husband Everett; four brothers, and two sisters.

Edward Shileny

Funeral services for Edward Shileny of Decorah, formerly of Spillville, were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 8 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Spillville. The Rev. Donald Hawes officiated. Pall bearers were: Jeff Bernatz, Tom Warner, Dave Hagen, Mike Warner, Jody Nieborg, Shane Bohlmann and Andrew Mihm. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Edward, 80, died Thursday, May 4, 2000 at the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah.

Edward Anthony Shileny was born August 10, 1919 on a farm near Spillville, the son of Frank F. and Emma (Snyder) Shileny. He obtained his education by attending St. Wenceslaus School, Decorah High School and graduated from Luther College in 1942. Edward taught for over 40 years. His first teaching job was at Ft. Atkinson High School in Ft. Atkinson. He also taught at Glencoe, MN Chatfiled, MN, Waucoma and served as principal, history, band, and vocal instructor for 12 years at the Ridgeway High School. He taught social studies at South Winneshiek in Calmar for 24 years, retiring August 8, 1988. Edward also farmed west of Spillville.

On November 26, 1952, he married Sylvia (Novak) Bernatz at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. To this union, one daughter Sally was born.

Edward is survived by his wife Sylvia of Decorah; one daughter: Sally Mihm of St. Lucas; one step-daughter: Suzanne Warner of St. Louis Park, MN; two step-sons: Tom Bernatz of New Hampton, and John Bernatz of Davenport; two grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister Louise Frana.

Robert Loftus

Funeral services for Robert Loftus of Charles City were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 8 at the Conway Funeral Home in Elma. Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery at Lourdes. The Rev. Roger R. Rethamel officiated. Pall bearers were: Joe Hensley, Roger Jacobs, Dave Zobeck, Chris Rankin, Brian Deetz, Louis Trachta, and Dennis Beaver.

Robert, 63, died Thursday, May 4, 2000 at his home in Charles City of cancer.

Robert Walter Loftus was born October 25, 1936 near Elma, the son of Gathian and Olga (Zobeck) Loftus. He attended Immaculate Conceptin Academy in Elma through eighth grade, he later went on to receive his GED from Calmar. Later in life he attended NIACC in Mason City for plumbing and heating.

On June 28, 1958 he married Becky Hensley at the Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. After their marriage the couple resided in Charles City, where he worked at Oliver-White Farm. He later owned and operated the Point Cafe. He also spent some time working at John Deere in Waterloo. Most recently he worked at the Charles City Country Club.

He enjoyed working on cars and remodeling homes.

Robert is survived by his wife Becky of Charles City; four sons: Robert of Charles City, Norb of Lourdes, Marty of Charles City, and Monty also of Charles City; four daughters: Deb Beaver, Cherie Loftus, Peggy Loftus and Crystal Loftus all of Charles City; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; and two step-grandchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister Patsy Walker.

Alfred Kohles

Funeral services for Alfred Kohles of Elma were held Tuesday, May 9, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Lourdes. The Rev. Roger R. Rethamel officiated. Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Lourdes. Pall bearers were: Michael Ries, Jeff Biwer, Joshua Tweeten Jacob Tweeten, Tyler Tweeten and Michelle Biwer. Honorary pall bearers were: Lori Stewart, Shelley Howe, Shereen McKenna, John Kohles, and Kimberly Davis. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Alfred, 80, died Friday, May 5 2000 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco of natural causes.

Alfred Peter Kohles was born December 17, 1919 at Earling, the son of George and Mary (Emig) Kohles. At age two his family moved to Howard County. He made his First Communion and was confirmed at Chester. He entered the armed forces in 1941 and served three years in the Military Police during WWII.

On May 29, 1944 he married Beatrice Havlik at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. After their marriage the couple farmed in the Lourdes area and after his retirement they moved to Elma.

He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and the American Legion Post in Elma.

Survivors include his wife Beatrice of Elma; four daughters: Donna Biwer of Elma, Mary Lou Ries of Ionia, Linda Tweeten of Joice, and Julie Hageman of Ossian; one son: Ronald of Belmond; 13 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren; five sisters: Marcella Wyatt, Stella Wyatt, and Rita Thompson all of Riceville; Anna Jean Sullivan of Cedar Rapids, and Helen Sullivan of Cresco.

Alfred was preceded in death by one son: Gary; one daughter: Betty Jo; his parents; one brother: Urban; and three sisters: Lenora Kohles, Rose Kohles, and Mary Whitinger.

Peter Govern

Funeral services for Peter Govern of Riceville were held at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, May 6 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville. The Rev. John Moser and Rev. John Cain officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Peter, 63, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000 at the Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City after battling cancer since 1988.

Peter Joseph Govern was born February 20, 1937 northeast of Bancroft, the son of John Patrick Govern and Ella Irene (Trenary) Govern. He attended at St. John’s School of Bancroft and then matriculated at Iowa State University for his B.S. in physical education and mathematics. His M.S. was received from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, IL. He taught at Columbus High School in Waterloo when that school opened in 1959 until 1962 in the math department and as the head baseball coach and as a basketball coach. He also taught at the Alden Community Schools, LaHabra, California schools, and mathematics classes at the Riceville Community Schools from 1965 until 1979. He received a Mitchell County Teacher of the Year award in 1970. He was a member of the Riceville Education Association.

Pete’s other vocations included farming and real estate. He was a salesman with Kepple Real Estate of Charles City from 1970-1977. In 1977 Pete and his wife Elaine opened “Govern and Govern, Homes and Farmland, U.S.A.” which served his neighbors and friends of Northeast Iowa by providing real estate and farm management services. In January 2000 he became associated with Riceville Real Estate. In 1980 he received an Outstanding Conservation Farmer Award from Howard County SCD. For several summers he did hail adjusting.

In the past he was an officer of the Cedar Valley Board of Realtors and a member of the Northeast Iowa Board of Realtors. For many years he was associated with the Realtor’s Land Institute and a vice-president of the Northeast Iowa region. In 1994 he was named the Outstanding Farm and Land Broker of the State of Iowa. In 1999 the institute recognized his years of service to the organization with a service award. He served as a consultant for the Iowa Farm Business Association. Other responsibilities included work for the Howard County Board of Review, Howard County Economic Development Commission for the promotion and welfare of Howard County. This had a special place in his agenda with several industries and businesses added to the Howard County roster of accomplishments.

Local Riceville projects have included service on the Immaculate Conception Church Council and as a Trustee. In the past, he was active on the Archdiocesan of Dubuque Council. Offices held in the Riceville Industrial Corporation included secretary, treasurer, and president for may years. Others include president of the Riceville Library Board, the Riceville Community Club, Riceville Jaycees and as an Oustanding Jaycee president in Northeast Iowa. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Riceville Community Golf Course and as the Riceville charman of the town’s quasiquicentennial celebration.

Peter is survived by his wife Elaine of Riceville; one daughter: Juliet of Riceville; two sons: Christopher of St. Joseph’s, MN and Shawn of Milwaukee, WI; three grandchildren; his mother: Ella Govern of Bancroft; two brothers: John of Eagle Grove and Tom of New Lennox, IL; and five sisters: Delores Miller of Marshalltown, Pat Mathre of Nora Springs, Phyllis Krause of Mason City, Priscilla DeGeeter of Champaign, IL, and Jean Govern of Mason City.

Joan Marley

Funeral services for Joan Marley of Riceville were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 13 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven. Interment was in St. Peter’s Catholic Church cemetery in New Haven. The Rev. John A. Moser officiated. Pall bearers were: Curt Fox, John Sullivan, Ken Eagen, Lee Snyder, Jerry Koenigs and Lyle Eastman. Honorary pall bearers were: Katie Rieken, Jean Foster, Linda Retterath, Cathryn Adams, Karen Huinker and Grace Warburton. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Joan , 57, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000 at her home.

Joan Marie Marley was born July 20, 1942 in Mason City, the daughter of Frank and Mary Helen (Graham) May. The family moved to Austin, MN where her father was an auto mechanic. Joan lost her father to an auto accident in 1954 and her mother to cancer in 1957. She then moved in with a foster family, Pete and Lucille Kloberdanz. She graduated from Pacelli High School in 1960. Joan attended cosmetology school and was a beautician for two years. She then worked at St. Mary’s Hospital until she met her husband.

On September 14, 1963, she married Dave Marley. The couple lived on a farm in the Riceville area. Joan kept busy working at the Riceville School, cooking hot lunch and cleaning the First State Bank in Riceville.

Joan was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven. She enjoyed spending time in her kitchen cooking and baking.

Joan is survived by her husband; five sons: James of Riceville, Joe of Koyukuk, AK, Jerry of Baraboo, WI, John of Trempealeau, WI, Jay of Osage; one daughter: Sara Grimm of Osage; a foster daughter: Deb Prescott of Adams, MN; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; her foster mother, Lucille Kloberdanz of Austin, MN; and four foster sisters.

Joan was preceded in death by an infant son; her parents; and her foster father, Pete Kloberdanz

Bernice Medhaug

Funeral services for Bernice Medhaug were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 15 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Waterloo. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Bernice, 84, died Thursday, May 11, 2000 at Allen Hospital of natural causes.

Bernice V. Medhaug was born February 1, 1916 in Cresco, the daughter of Joseph and Blanche (Grebin) Ahern.

On November 5, 1989 she married Howard Medhaug in Osage.

Bernice is survived by her husband; one step-son: Jim Tullis of Ann Arbor, MI; two step-daughters: Shirley Sharp of Rochester, MN and Cynthia Stewart of Cedar Falls; seven step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; one brother: Don of St. Paul, MN; and two sisters: Vivian Viskocil of Osage and Doris Thompson of Savannah, GA.

Bernice was preceded in death by a sister, Maureen Dee and one brother, Vergil Ahern.

William Polivka

Funeral services for William Polivka were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 15 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery, rural Cresco. The Rev. Robert Holdorf officiated.

William, 89, died Thursday, May 11, 2000 at the Cresco Care Center where he had resided for five years.

William Polivka was born May 24, 1910 at Cedar Rapids, the son of John and Stella (Sobolik) Polivka. He attended high school in Cresco. On May 11, 1942 he entered the Army and served during WWII in the African and Middle Eastern theater. Following his discharge he returned to Cresco and worked as a carpenter with his father.

William was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Leonard.

Janet Fox

Funeral services for Janet Fox of Riceville were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 15 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville. The Rev. Herschel Hawf officiated.

Janet, 87, died Thursday, May 11, 2000 at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Center in Osage.

Janet S. Fox was born June 30, 1912 in Waterloo, the daughter of James G. Smith and Jeanie (Black) Smith. She was baptized at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Waterloo. Janet attended grade school in East Waterloo and graduated in 1930 from West High School in Waterloo. She then worked for the Rev. J.E. Johnson’s as a nanny.

On October 30, 1933, she married Theis Fox in Waterloo. They moved to the farm that Theis’ father had homesteaded in 1888 and where Theis was born.

Janet became a member of the First Congregational Church in Riceville in April of 1946. She moved into Riceville in 1974 where she resided until she entered the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center on April 30, 1995.

She worked as a dental assistant and receptionist for Dr. Paul Johnson in Riceville for several years.

She enjoyed a small garden and several flowers in her yard on Woodland Ave.

Janet is survived by one son: James of Wabasha, MN; and one daughter: Carol Lou Brunner of Riceville; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Janet was preceded in death by her husband Theis on August 2, 1963; one daughter in infancy; a grandson; her parents; one brother: Don; and one sister: Alice J. Warner.

Harold Blomgren

Funeral services for Harold Blomgren were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 16 at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. The Rev. Gary K. Lee officiated. Pall bearers were her grandchildren, and honorary pall bearers were: Charles Miller, Paul Ristau, Don Burr, Robert Byrnes, Ray Baumgartner, Elmer Sjurson, Ronald and Eugene Bronner.

Harold, 86, died Friday, May 12, 2000 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Harold Henry Blomgren was born October 3, 1913 in Bluffton township in Winneshiek County, the son of Elmer and Ida (Hermann) Blomgren. He was the oldest of seven children. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith on November 16, 1913 and confirmed on November 19, 1961. Harold completed the eighth grade in the rural schools in Howard County. Harold served less than a year in the Civilian Conservation Corps, while it was stationed in Cresco.

On October 8, 1938 he married Sarah Elizabeth Offen in the Presbyterian parsonage in Mason City.

Harold worked as a hired farm laborer, then in 1945 they started farming on their own. In 1955 they bought a farm in Orleans township in Winneshiek County. They farmed this farm for 40 years, then they sold the farm and moved into Cresco.

Harold is survived by his wife of 61 years Sarah; one son: Eugene of Spring Valley, MN, and one daughter: Sharon Bronner of Cresco; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Fern Schmauss of Cresco and Violet Pedersen of Mabel, MN.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Lyle and Marvin; and two sisters: Gladys Hart and Lillian Bujan.

Lester Seavy

Funeral services for Lester Seavy of Riceville, were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 16 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery. The Rev. Thomas Mowbray officiated.

Lester, 87, died Friday, May 12, 2000 at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Lester Raymond Seavy was born May 17, 1912 in Riceville, the son of Frank and Charlotte (Meinzer) Seavy. He attended grade school and two years of high school in Riceville. He worked on his parent’s farm east of Riceville. During this time Lester completed a correspondence course from Cook Electrical School. In 1942 he moved to Burbank, CA where he worked at Lockheed Aircraft. He entered the Army on May 11, 1942. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific and U.S. Continental area. He was an automotive mechanic in the 23rd Military Police with the rank of technician 4th grade. He was discharged on November 9, 1945. After discharge from the service he returned to Lockheed Aircraft where he worked until retiring in 1959. During his retirement years Lester did a variety of handyman work such as lawn mowing, electrical, plumbing, lawn mower and auto repair out of the shop at his home. Lester returned home to visit his family and friends on a yearly basis until 1984. He had an avid interest in cars and their repair.

Lester is survived by one sister, Hazel Seavy, of Riceville.

Lester was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers: Floyd, Donald, Gaylord, and Gilbert.

Betty Jean Biesek

Funeral services for Betty Jean Biesek of Baraboo, WI were held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 17 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Baraboo. Interment was in Caledonia German Methodist Cemetery. Rev. Gerald Vosen officiated. Redlin Funeral Home in Baraboo handled the arrangements.

Betty, 57, died Friday, May 12, 2000 following a long illness.

Betty Jean Biesek was born May 30, 1942 in Cresco, the daughter of Leonard and Anna Mae Hyke.

On February 3, 1962 she married Eugene Biesek, Sr., in Ft. Lewis,WA.

Betty is survived by her husband Eugene of Baraboo; two daughters: Tina Neises of Reedsburg and Brenda Buelow of DeForest; and one son: Eugene, Jr. of Baraboo; six grandchildren; and one brother: Robert of Phoenix, AZ.

Betty was preceded in death by two grandsons; her parents; one brother: Earl; and her grandparents.

Beatrice Boehmer

Funeral services for Beatrice Boehmer of New Hampton, were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 16 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Alta Vista. Interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista. The Rev. Roger R. Rethamel officiated. The pall bearers placed the pall. Pall bearers were her grandsons: Leo and Roger Deutsch, Tom and Tim Boehmer, and John and Joe Conry. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Beatrice, 89, died Saturday, May 13, 2000 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of congestive heart failure.

Beatrice Matilda Boehmer was born June 2, 1910 at St. Cecelia, the daughter of William and Lena (Blaska) Roethler.

On May 15, 1928 she married Walter J. Boehmer at St. Bernard’s Church in Alta Vista. Following their marriage, they farmed near Lawler, New Hampton and later near Alta Vista. Beatrice moved to Pleasant Manor in New Hampton in February of 1984.

Beatrice is survived by two daughters: Elaine Deutsch of Ionia and Louise Conry of Greene; one son: Wally of Alta Vista; 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Leona Arndt of Charles City, Clara Yearling and Marion Elesfrud both of Waterloo.

Beatrice was preceded in death by her husband Walter in 1971; three grandsons; one great-grandson; two brothers: Alfred and Joe; and four sisters: Carrie Markle, Frances Logan, Gladys Hartson and Alice Roethler.

Alma Uhlenhake

Funeral services for Alma Uhlenhake of Ossian were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 16 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian. Interment was in St. Francis Cemetery in Ossian. Msgr. Cletus J. Hawes, Msgr. Leander Reicks and the Rev. Vincent Simon officiated. Alma, 80, died Saturday, May 13, 2000 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN of an apparent heart attack.

Alma Anne Uhlenhake was born February 2, 1920, in rural St. Lucas in Fayette County, the daughter of Alphonse and Elizabeth (Reicks) Huber. She was baptized at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas and attended school there until fourth grade. She moved with her parents and siblings to Lawler, where she was confirmed in her faith at Our Lady of Mt. Caramel Catholic Church. She continued her education in the Lawler schools and graduated from the Lawler High School in 1937. After graduation, Alma attended college at Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, where she received her teaching certificate.

Alma taught in country schools of Chickasaw, Bremer and Winneshiek counties for six years.

On October 1, 1945, she married Gregory Leander Uhlenhake at Our Lady of Mt. Caramel Catholic Church in Lawler. They made their home on the farm on the east edge of Ossian and raised their family. Alma lived there until her health began to fail and then became a resident of the Ossian Senior Hospice on March 10, 1998.

Alma was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church for 56 years and its Rosary Society.

She was known for her hospitality and excellent culinary skills. She received enjoyment as an avid gardener, watching birds and discussing politics. The annual reunion at St. Anthony’s de Padua Church near Festina was a highlight of Alma’s year.

Alma is survived by her husband Gregory of Ossian; two sons: Joseph of Ossian and Brian of Metamora, IL; four daughters: Joyce Justis of Burnsville, MN, Connie Hvitved of Cresco, Mary Lynn Schmitt of Sumner, and Barbara Byers of Inver Grove Heights, MN; 14 grandchildren; one brother: Arthur of Lawler; and three sisters: Phyllis Lechtenberg of Festina, Lorraine Fisher of West Union, and Ethel Mae Schneberger of Alta Vista.

Alma was preceded in death by one son: Craig on April 12, 1977; one daughter: Carol Uhlenhake on June 20, 1957; her parents; one brother: Henry; and one sister: Marie Wenthold.

Jodene Broderick

Funeral services for Jodene Broderick of Mason City, formerly of Protivin, were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 19 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Protivin. The Rev. Allen Schmitt officiated. The pall was placed on the casket by her two brothers. Pall bearers were: Joe Rosonke, Jeff Rothus, Chad Larson, Steve Pettit, Scott Petersburg, Peter Blodgett, Gary Pecinovsky and Allen Pecinovsky. Honorary pall bearers were: Jean Ann Rosonke, Lisa Brown, Cherie Flatjord, Glenda Bodensteiner and Nancy Hagensick. Hugeback’s Protivin Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Jodene, 32, died Sunday, May 14, 2000 in Clear Lake as the result of an accidental drowning.

Jodene Anne Broderick was born June 6, 1967 in Cresco, the daughter John and Judy (Pecinovsky) Busta. She attended Holy Trinity Catholic School in Protivin and was a graduate of the Turkey Valley High School class of 1985. In 1987 she started working for the IMI Cornelius Company in Mason City where she was currently employed as a buyer.

On April 9, 1994 she married Terry Broderick at the Lakeside Church in Clear Lake. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. Jodene mostly enjoyed being with her family and friends and spending time with them on their boat.

Jodene is survived by her husband Terry of Mason City; and three children: Kyle David Gonnerman, Kole William Broderick, and Kallie Jo Broderick, all at home; her parents: John and Judy Busta of Protivin; two brothers: Jeff of Calmar and Jayme of Atkins.

Jodene was preceded in death by one brother: John James in 1962; paternal grandparents; and maternal grandparents.

W.J. O’Brien

Funeral services for William (Bill) O’Brien of Cresco were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 27, at St. Joseph’s Worship Center with interment in Calvary Cemetery, both at Cresco. The Rev. Michael L. Tauke officiated. Conway Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. The grandchildren were pall bearers.

William, 90, died May 22, 2000 at the Regional Health Services Hospital due to complications following a stroke.

William J. O’Brien was born March 9, 1910 in Jamestown, ND, the son of William J. and Evelyn (Hunt) O’Brien. In his early years his family moved to Iowa and settled on a farm near Elma. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. He received his education at the academy at Lourdes and graduated from the eighth grade.

On May 16, 1939 he married Edvina Lickteig at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at Cresco.

Bill is survived by four children: Raymond of Waterloo, Robert of Cedar Rapids, Wayne of West Union and Mary of Rockwood, Ontario, Canada; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson; one brother, Edward of Elma; three sisters, Frances Schwickerath of Cedar Falls, Eleanor Kruger of Waterloo and Bernice Schmauss of Cresco.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edvina; one son, Ronald; one grandson; his parents; and three sisters, Marguerite Schoeberl, Myrtle Walter and Cecelia Richardson.

Harvey Lammers

Funeral services for Harvey Lammers of Chester were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 26 at the Chester United Methodist Church. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs. Rev. Robert Holdorf officiated. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Harvey, 74, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000 at his home of natural causes.

Harvey Hans Lammers was born August 14, 1925 in Lime Springs, the son of Charles and Mary (Mauderer) Lammers.

On August 9, 1947, he married Barbara Krakliow in Burlington. Harvey farmed for many years in rural Lime Springs and Chester areas. After farming, he owned and operated the Wheel Inn in Chester for 23 years. He retired in 1993. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling and spent two winters in Arizona.

Harvey enjoyed many activities including fishing, bird watching, being outdoors, playing cards, shooting pool, and being inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame. He sponsored and managed softball teams, race cars, bowling and pool teams for many years.

Harvey is survived by his wife Barbara; two sons: Curt of Cresco, and Larry of Chester; one daughter: Sue Cartney of St. Louis Park, MN; nine grandchildren; one brother: Vernie of Waterloo; and one sister: Edna Dieken of Lime Springs.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Lee and Les; and three sisters: Eileen, Ella and Elsie.

Helen Maseman

Funeral services for Helen Maseman of Elma were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 27 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Elma. Interment was in Howard Cemetery in Elma. The Rev. Maurice Lind officiated. Pall bearers were: Emil Platte, Dick Wright, Max Schmidt, Jr., Kenneth Schmidt, Melvin O’Donnell and Jim Johnson. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Helen, 91, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000 at Colonial Manor Home in Elma of natural causes.

Helen Maseman was born April 18, 1909 in Howard County, the daughter of Fred and Louise (Westendorf) Bartels. She attended rural schools near her home. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Maple Leaf on September 6, 1928.

On September 6, 1928 she married Alvin Maseman at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Maple Leaf. Following their marriage the couple farmed east of Alta Vista until 1943 when they moved to a farm north of Alta Vista where they resided until her husband’s death on January 8, 1963. Helen worked as a seamstress for many years. In March of 1963, Helen moved to Elma where she resided until her death.

She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and also a member of the St. Peter’s Ladies Aid.

Helen is survived by three daughters: Verna Harms of Denver, Vera Gebel of New Hampton, and Verla Alexander of Roseberg, OR; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one brother: Clarence of Riceville.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband Alvin; her parents; four sisters: Rose Brummond, Ester Groth, Mabel Mixdorf and Ellen Mixdorf; and three brothers: Victor, Herbert and Leonard.

Lillian Jones

Services for Lillian Jones were held at the graveside in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Lime Springs on Thursday, May 25, at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Frank Fagerburg officiating. Friends read scripture, poetry and sang for her service. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lillian died at the Regional Health Services of Howard County on May 24, 2000 at the age of 91.

Lillian Esther Jones was born September 10, 1908, the daughter of Richard and Anna (Weinkauf) Jones. Her mother died when Lillian was two and she was raised by her father and his parents. She received her schooling in this area and also attended business college in Mankato, MN. She returned to Lime Springs to care for her grandparents. She had polio at a young age, but was able to perform housekeeping work until recent years.

She was a member of the Eastern Star for 72 years joining in 1927.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

M. Prochaska

Funeral services for Margerie L. Prochaska, 97, of Cresco were held at 11;30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Lourdes with the Rev. Roger R. Rethamel officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pall bearers were Tony Whitinger, Dan and Dick McGee, Alex and Nathan Backes and David Prochaska. Conway Funeral Home in Elma was in charge of arrangements.

Margerie died Saturday, May 27, 2000 at the Cresco Care Center.

Margerie Lucille Brown was born January 17, 1903 near Riceville the daughter of Otis Wheeler and Etta Amelia (Eastman) Brown. She attended the rural school.

In April of 1957, she married Harold Prochaska. Following their marriage they operated a restaurant in Riceville for several years before moving to Cedar Rapids. After Harold’s death, she continued living in Cedar Rapids until entering the Cresco Care Center in January of 1997.

Margerie is survived by two step-daughters, Mary McGee of Gilbertville and Millie Whitinger of Elma; four step-sons, Joe Prochaska of Eagle Grove, Jim Prochaska and Francis Prochaska, both of Milan, IL, and John Prochaska of Myrtle Beach, SC; 17 step-grandchildren; and 22 step great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in 1994; two step-grandchildren; and two
