Loyd Entwisle
 

Funeral services for Loyd Entwisle were held on Friday, August 4 at the United Methodist Church in West Union. Rev. Kay Roath and Rev. Richard Speight officiated. Interment was in West Union Cemetery. Pall bearers were: Steve Nagel, Nicholas Entwisle, Shawn Zentz, James Weltzin, Dennis Nagel, and Lance Brennan. Burnham-Wood Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Loyd, 85, died Wednesday, August 2 2000 at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center.

Loyd Entwisle was born October 26, 1914 in Volney, the son of Charles and Cora (Slack) Entwisle. His mother died when he was an infant, and he was raised by his aunt, and later by his older siblings. Loyd attended school in Monona and Hawkeye.

On March 17, 1937 he married Violet Walker in the Hawkeye Methodist Church. They farmed for a while, then Loyd was employed with Doscher-Miller and Sage Implement Company of West Union for ten years. Loyd then worked for Sidney Crowe and Rodney Drewes doing dairy farming.

Loyd retired to Hawkeye in 1979. During his retirement years, he spent his time mowing lawns, gardening, and taking care of his son Jim’s horses. Loyd cared for his wife until her death in 1991.

Loyd entered the Good Samaritian Home in April 1998.

Survivors include three sons: Jim and Mark of Hawkeye, and Dennis of West Union; seven daughters: Merilee Kleppe of Floris, Linda Weltzin of LaPorte City, Janet Entwisle of Cresco, Nancy Nagel of McGregor, Peggy Kurt of Bridge Port, NE, Diane Nagel of Prairie Du Chein, WI, and Julie Zentz of Cedar Rapids; 24 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Loyd was preceded in death by his wife Violet; one daughter: Sherry Ellen; one grandson; three grandchildren in infancy; his parents; two brothers: Earl and Orville; and three sisters: Bessie Kolby, Ruby Hayward, and Ruth Schott.


Eileen O’Brien

Funeral services for Eileen O’Brien of Bluffton were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 7 at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, Bluffton. Rev. Henry Charipar officiated. Interment was in St. Bridget’s Cemetery. Pall bearers were: Tom Webb, Steve Webb, Nancy White, Mike Webb, Karen Hageman and Jerome McCabe. French & Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Eileen, 89, died Friday, August 4, 2000 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah after a long illness.

Eileen Marie O’Brien was born February 23, 1911 near Bluffton, the daughter of Patrick and Amelia (Bergmann) O’Brien. She attended country school and worked for St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN for 25 years. Before moving into the Aase Haugen Nursing Home she lived in the Goose Island Apartments.

She loved her flowers, knitting and crocheting.

Survivors include one sister: Ruth Webb of Burr Oak.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Margaret O’Brien and Charlotte McCabe; and one brother: John.


Gotchal Anderson

Funeral services for Gotchal “Pete” Anderson of Riceville were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 8 at the McIntire United Methodist Church in McIntire. Rev. Michael Carey officiated. Interment was in Wayne Cemetery in rural McIntire. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Gotchal, 85, died Saturday, August 5, 2000 at his home.

Gotchal Leonard Anderson was born December 30, 1914 in Lisbon, ND, the son of Andrew and Rasmine (Hansen) Anderson. He came to Iowa as a young man with his two brothers to work as a farm hand. In 1937 he started working at Dolliver, IA for Christina Hansen managing the farm.

On May 4, 1940 he married Mabel Hansen, the daughter of christina Hansen in Spencer. In 1942 they moved to an unimproved farm near Riceville. He had lived the last 53 years on the present farm.

Gotchal loved his life as a farmer. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, having taken all his grandchildren to Canada except the three youngest. Upon retirement they spent several years in Mission, TX.

Survivors include his wife Mabel of Riceville; two sons: Darrel of Riceville, and Dennis of Lisbon, ND; two daughters: Nancy Lubbert of Riceville and Debra Roth of Beloit, WI; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Ervin and Edmund both of Lisbon, ND.

Gotchal was preceded in death by one son Larry in 1996; his parents; four brothers; and three sisters.

 

 

 


Charles Shores

Funeral services for Charles Shores of Protivin will be held today, Wednesday, August 9 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Cresco. Rev. Tim Sir will officiate. His body was donated to the University of Iowa for medical research. Balik Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Charles, 96, died Saturday, August 5, 2000 at the Cresco Care Center following a short illness.

Survivors include three brothers: Milo of Fort Atkinson, Louis and Walter both of Protivin.


Charles Shores

Funeral services for Charles Shores of Protivin were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 9 at the First Congregational Church in Cresco. Rev. Tim Sir officiated. Interment was in Bohemian National Cemetery, rural Protivin. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Charles, 96, died Saturday, August 5, 2000 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco after a long illness. Charles donated his body to the University of Iowa for medical research.

Charles Louis Shores was born May 1, 1904 near Protivin, the son of Louis and Mary (Chyle) Shores. He attended country school near Protivin, he played his guitar for 4-H and school programs. Charles was inducted in the Army at Camp Dodge. On August 24, 1942 following basic training as an airplane and engine mechanic, he was assigned to the 405th Fighter Squadron of the 729 Air Force. Charles left for service in the European Theater of operations on February 28, 1944. He served with the 405th Fighter squadron through the following Campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe and Air Force offensive Europe. He was awarded the following Medals and Campaign Ribbons: Good Conduct Medal, District Unit Badge, G.O795 9th Air Force, 1945 Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European, African, Middle Easter Theater Ribbon, with one Silver and one Bronze Battle Star. Three Overseas Service Bars, and one Service Stripe. Attaining the Rank of Staff Sergeant, Charles departed for the United States on October 29, 1945, arriving on November 7, 1945. He received his Honrable Discharge at the Separation Center Fort Sheridan, IL on November 12, 1945.

Following his discharge, Charles returned to the Protivin Community where he was engaged as a self employed carpenter until his retirement. He joined the American Legion Post #605, Protivin on April 3, 1946 and continued that membership until his death, serving in various capacities, including a long period as Chaplain.

Survivors are three brothers: Milo of Fort Atkinson, and Louis and Walter both of Protivin.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters: Mary Shores, Elle Kinkor, and Lilian Whitney.


August Huhe

Funeral services for August Huhe of Ridgeway were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 8 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Rev. Bruce Hobert officiated. Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery, Cresco. Pall bearers were: Duane Huhe, Robert Kappes, Galen Huhe, Troy Huhe, Jeremy Omar, and Harold Huhe. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

August, 88, died Saturday, August 5, 2000 at his home.

August Huhe was born July 12, 1912 in Berksiek, Germany, the son of Fred Sr. and Eliza (Ackermier) Huhe. At eleven months old, August was brought to the United States by his parents to their new homeland.

On October 14, 1936 he married Frieda Gerber in Cresco. They were active in farming until their retirement in 1994.

Survivors include his wife Frieda of Ridgeway; one son: Eugene of Ridgeway; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister: Frieda Goettelman of Spillville.

August was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Paul, Bill, and Fred.


Evelyn Vrba

Graveside services were held at the New Oregon Cemetery on Wednesday,August 9 at 9:30 a.m. with Rev. David Fye officiating. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

 

Evelyn, 91, died Saturday, August 5, 2000 at the Evans Memorial Home.

Evelyn Leone Vrba was born May 3, 1909 in Albert Lea, MN, the daughter of Hilbert and Cora Brant. She was raised in Albert Lea where she graduated from high school and was co-valedictorian. Following high school she attended Carlton College at Northfield, MN and Des Moines University. She loved to play piano and also played at the local theater at the silent movies.

On December 25, 1939 she married Edward H. Vrba in Albert Lea. Edward was elected senator for Howard and Winneshiek Counties and they moved to Des Moines for eight years and Evelyn was his secretary for this time. Evelyn and Edward moved back to Howard County and she spent the next 47 years living in the country several miles west of the New Oregon Cemetery. She worked for the Dodge dealership, the Times Plain Dealer, and Keune Brothers Construction for many years. After she retired from Keune Brothers she traveled extensively.

She enjoyed attending her grandson’s wrestling meets in high school and college and enjoyed watching and going to the St. Louis Cardinal baseball games.

She was a lifetime member of the First Congregational Church of Cresco, a member of the Friends in Council Clio Club and was active in woman’s fellowship at the Congregational Church.

She is survived by one grandson.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Edward H. Vrba; one son: Duane E.; one daugher: Diana Kay in infancy; her parents; and one brother: Virgil Brant.


Georgina Kovarik

Funeral services for Georgina Kovarik of Santa Maria, CA were held on August 10.

Georgina, 83, died Sunday, August 6, 2000.

Georgina S. Kovarik was born June 12, 1917 in Schley, the daughter of Michael and Veronica Barnes.

On October 11, 1941 she married Edward J. Kovarik of Protivin.

Survivors include four sons: Michael of Folsom, CA, Jonathan of San Jose, CA, Ronald of Houston, TX, and Karl of Santa Maria, CA; one daughter: Veronica Reynolds of San Jose; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three sisters: Darlene Thompson of Santa Maria, CA, Celeste Murphy of Bountiful, UT and Inez Springer of Cresco; and three brothers: Cyrus of Tacoma, WA, Russell of Cresco, and Mark of Clinton.

Georgina was preceded in death by her husband Edward in 1986; two sisters: Delores Reynolds and Winifred Bily; and five brothers: Virgil, Edmond, Harry, Cornelius and Kenneth.


Edward Clement

Funeral services for Edward L. Clement of Decorah were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, August 10 at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Decorah. Rev. Kim Smith officiated. Interment was in Washington Prairie Lutheran Church Cemetery. French and Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Edward, 87, died Monday, August 7, 2000 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah following a short illness.

Survivors include his wife Jennie of Decorah; one son: Wayne Clement of Decorah.


Jonah Hageman

Funeral services for Jonah Hageman, infant son of John and Deana Hageman of Harmony, MN, were held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 11 at the French and Balik Funeral Home in Decorah. Rev. Hans Floan of Burr Oak Lutheran Church officiated. Interment was in Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak.

Jonah Dean Hageman died on Monday, August 7, 2000 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital after complications at birth.

Survivors include his parents, John and Deana Hageman of Harmony; one sister: Megan; maternal great-grandmother: Florence Spilde of Decorah; paternal great-grandmother: Viola Palmer of Decorah; and paternal grandparents: Roman and Sharon Hageman of Frankville.

Jonah was preceded in death by maternal grandparents; great-grandparents; maternal great-grandfather; paternal great-grandparents; and paternal great-grandfather.


Louie Decker Sr.

Funeral services for Louie Decker Sr. were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 12 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Lime Springs. Rev. Linda Johnson officiated. Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery at Cresco. Pall bearers were: David Sjullie, Harry Blackburn, Harold Munkel, John Petru, Dale Reis, and Arnold DeRuiter. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Louie, 93, died Tuesday, August 8, 2000 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Louie Henry Decker, Sr. was born February 7, 1907 in Schley, the son of Charles and Blanche (Paul) Decker.

On October 25, 1934 he married Rose Koester in Preston, MN. They farmed and lived in this area until his retirement in 1974 when they moved to Lime Springs.

Survivors include his wife Rose; three daughters: Betty Roesler of Lime Springs, Arlene Sjullie of Cedar Rapids, and Luella Postel of Central City; three sons: Carl of Lawler, Donald of Tyler, TX, and Louie of Cedar Rapids; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

Louie was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Lawrence and Charles.

 

 


Neal Sloan

Funeral services for Neal Sloan of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 11 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg and Rev. Gary Krapfl officiated. Interment was in St. Benedict’s Catholic Cemetery in Decorah. Honorary pall bearers were: Decorah State Bank Retiree Coffee Club, Winn. Co. Physical Therapy Assn. Board Members, Bob and Barbara Buckton, and Bob and Rosie Jewell. Pall bearers were: Joe Keefe, Dick Trytten, Wayne Thomas, Joe Bouska, Jack Nelson, and Gerard “Bud” Noonan. French and Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Neal, 73, died Tuesday, August 8, 2000 at his home following a short illness.

Neal Louis Sloan was born December 28, 1926 in St. Lucas, the son of Louis and Theresa (Schmitt) Sloan. He attended and graduated from St. Luke’s High School in 1943. He then served with the United States Army in Korea. Neal attended Loras College in Dubuque.

On September 19, 1951 he married Joan McDonald at Immaculate Conception Cathlic Church in Gilbertville. Neal worked for the Leath Furniture Company in Dubuque, and then with the Interstate Finance Company in Dubuque until 1957, when he was transferred to Decorah to open a new branch. In 1967, he went to work for the Decorah State Bank as a loan officer, retiring on January 2, 1992.

He enjoyed traveling, yard work and feeding the birds.

Neal was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, board member of the Winneshiek County Physical Therapy Association, Oneota Golf Course, Elks Lodge, VFW and the Sunrise and Good Neighbor Clubs at the banks.

Survivors include his wife Joan of Decorah; five daughters: Pat Welo of Mt. Horeb, WI, Dianne Frazer of Oelwein, Mary Sloan-Edwards of Anchorage, AK, Julie of Decorah, and Jean Wise also of Decorah; two sons: Michael of Rochester, MN and David of Ankeny; 14 grandchildren; two sisters: Irene Meyer of West Des Moines and Dorothy Schultz of Urbandale; and three brothers: Donald of Dubuque, Gerald of Ponca City, OK, and Floyd of Phoenix, AZ.

Neal was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: James, Thomas, and Robert in infancy; and one sister: Barbara Holverson.


Irene Lundak

Funeral services for Irene Lundak of Cresco will be held at 10:30 a.m. today Wednesday, August 16 at the First Congregatinal Church in Cresco. Rev. Tim Sir will officiate. Interment will be in New Oregon Cemetery at Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Irene, 86, died Sunday, August 13, 2000 at the Good Samaritan Center in Albert Lea, MN of natural causes.

Irene V. Lunak was born April 20, 1914, the daughter of Charles and Emma Vopava.

On April 27, 1938 she married Rudolph W. Lundak. They resided in Howard County where Irene was a caring homemaker and an avid gardener.

Irene was a long term member of the First Congregational Church and the ZCBJ Lodge #85 of Protivin. Rudolph passed away in 1985. Irene lived at the Howard County Residential Care Facility for ten years and then moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Albert Lea in 1996.

Survivors include three sons: John of Pine Island, MN, David of Albert Lea, and Eugene of Houston, MN; ten grandchildren; two step grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; and one sister: Georgina Hubka of Cresco.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband Rudolph; her parents; and one sister: Emily Voyna.


Arnold Tieskotter

Funeral services for Arnold Tieskotter of Harmony, MN were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 18 at Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony. Rev. John Hagen officiated. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Arnold, 87, died Tuesday, August 15, 2000 at the Harmony Nursing Home.

Arnold Edmund Tieskotter was born January 16, 1913, the son of Henry William and Clara (Shimek) Tieskotter.

On December 26, 1942 he married Mildred Kobriger. They farmed in rural Castalia, moving to the Preston area in 1951. He remained on the farm until 1974 when he moved to Harmony, MN.

After retirement Arnold loved polka dancing and fishing.

Survivors include three sons: Richard of Aurora, CO, Clair of Harmony and Bill of Preston; one daughter: Jean Mullen of Auburn, WA; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister: Eleanor Slifk of Decorah.

Arnold was preceded in death by his wife Mildred; one son: Jim; his parents; one brother: Gordon; and one sister: Gertrude Schissel.


Collin Broadwater

Graveside services for Collin Broadwater were held on Monday, August 21 at 9:30 a.m. at Willamette National Cemetery. Canby Funeral Chapel handled the arrangements.

Collin, 80, died Thursday, August 17, 2000 in Canby, OR.

Collin Clair Broadwater was born September 19, 1919 in rural Harmony, MN, the son of William H. and Nellie (Whelan) Broadwater. He attended Bristol Center and Harmony High School.

On April 25, 1941 he married Marie Henning of Cresco. He served in the Army during WWII. They farmed near Granger, MN, but his desire was to build, fly and test airplanes. He retired from government employment December 31, 1981 and moved to Oregon. Collin and Marie had also resided in California, Florida and Wahington.

Survivors include two sons: Bob of Salem and Ron of Burney, CA; one daughter: Kathy Broadwater of Oregon City; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister: Nora Roberts of Santa Monica, CA.

Collin was preceded in death by his wife on January 1, 1999; one brother and two sisters.


Aleda Knutson

Funeral services for Aleda Knutson of New Hampton were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, August 20 at Jerico Lutheran Church rural New Hampton. Rev. Kent Dethlefsen officiated. Interment was in Jerico Lutheran Church Cemetery. Pall bearers were: Tim Knutson, Randy Ellingson, Eric Knutson, Aaron Johnson, Wallace Knutson and Ray Wiley. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Aleda, 81, died Friday, August 18, 2000 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of natural causes.

Aleda Mabel Orriette Knutson was born July 23, 1919 in Howard County, the daughter of John and Nettie (Hildahl) Hereid. She was baptized August 17, 1919 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Saude. She attended country school near her home in rural Chickasaw County and she went on to graduate from New Hampton High School in 1937. After graduating, she went on to the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for a short time, and then began teaching in both the Chickasaw and Howard County area schools for over 30 years.

On September 30, 1939 she married Albert Knutson at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Saude. After their marriage the couple resided in Mason City for two years before moving back to farm in the Howard and Chickasaw County area. She went on to further her educatin and graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1965 with a BA in Education. In 1996 the couple moved to New Hampton.

She was a member of the Jerico Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid. She enjoyed gardening and traveling. She and Albert spent many winters in Arizona and also took a trip to Norway.

Survivors include two sons: Gary of Decorah and Larry of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister: Hazel Mitchell of Pine, AZ.

Aleda was preceded in death by her husband Albert on March 27, 1999; two grandsons; her parents; and one brother: James.


Calvin Lee

Funeral services for Calvin Lee of Westgate were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 22 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural New Hampton. Rev. Ron Spears of Aurora officiated. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Assaria Lutheran Cemetery at Assaria, KS. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Calvin, 50, died Friday, August 18, 2000 near Strawberry Point as the result of a one vehicle accident.

Calvin I. Lee was born August 15, 1950 at New Hampton, the son of Harold and Hazel Norma (Nystel) Lee. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Saude. He was a 1969 graduate of Crestwood High School and attended Iowa State University in Ames. He enlisted and served in the United States Air Force for ten years.

He married Eileen Kuhns in the summer of 1973 at the Air Force Base in Cheyene, WY. After their marriage, they lived in Cheyene until moving to Assaria, KS in 1984. He was a surveyor for the Union Pacific Railroad and later sold life insurance. He moved to Westgate in 1998 where he was active in his church and was a member of the Westgate American Legion Post.

Survivors include two sons: A.J. of Austin, TX and David of Westgate; two sisters: Joanna VanDeBerg of Sumner and Diana Haldin of Elk Point, SD; and three brothers: James of New Hampton, Richard of Rochester, MN and Dennis of Vinton.

Calvin was preceded in death by his wife Eileen; and his parents.


Judy Reicks

Funeral services for Judy Reicks of Cresco were held Tuesday, August 22 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Worship Center in Cresco. Rev. Henry W. Charipar presided with Msgr. L.H. Reicks and Msgr. Donald Hawes concelebrating. Interment was in Calvary Cemeter, Cresco. The daughters placed the pall. Pall bearers were brothers and brothers-in-law: Darrell, Rick, James, and Randy Wagner and Konrad Verlsteffen and Mark Balk. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Judy, 63, died Friday, August 18, 2000 at her home in Cresco after a courageous struggle with cancer.

Judith Rose Reicks was born July 26, 1937 near Spillville, the daughter of Edward and Gladys (Huber) Wagner. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. She attended the rural school, the parochial school in Spillville and graduated from Calmar High School.

On August 13, 1960 she married Denis H. Reicks at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. They started farming. Judy had a great love of landscaping and gardening. She enjoyed nature and being in the outdoors. She was active in her church community, liked to square dance, and had belonged to a neighborhood card club.

Survivors include her husband Denis; three daughters: Wendy Bohr of Cresco, Cindy Frana of Ridgeway and Carla of San Diego, CA; three sons: Dean of Cresco, Brian of Cedar Rapids and Aarin of Cresco; six granddaughters; her parents: Edward and Gladys of Fort Atkinson; four brothers: Darrell of Calmar, Rick of Protivin, James of Cedar Rapids, and Randy of Fort Atkinson; and two sisters: Jeanne Verlsteffen of Coral Springs, FL and Janice Balk of Waucoma.


Olena Hendrickson

Funeral services for Olena Hendrickson will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, at the Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home in LeRoy, MN, with the Rev. Thomas Kolden officiating. Interment will be in the LeRoy Lutheran Cemetery.

Olena, 103, died Saturday, August 19, 2000 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco where she had resided since 1995. She was formerly of LeRoy.

Olena Bertina Hendrickson was born in Lodi Township, Mower County, the daughter of Ole and Anna (Hatleberg) Vold. She attended and graduated from LeRoy High School in 1916 and received her normal training in Austin, MN in 1917. She then taught in the LeRoy area. In 1925 she graduated from the Kahler School of Nursing and worked as a nurse in Rochester and also in California.

On January 30, 1950 she married Herman R. Hendrickson.

She is survived by one sister, Adah Grube of Cresco.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman; her parents; and sisters Johanna Davies, Jene Vold, Peg Vold and Geneva Vold.

Irene Thompson

Funeral services for Irene Thompson of Decorah were held Friday, August 25 at 11:00 a.m. at Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah. Rev. James Glesne and Rev. Ole Winter officiated. Interment was in Union Prairie Cemetery. Pall bearers were: Eric Snyder, Hank Snyder, Jim Tangeman, Ron Tangeman, Butch Thompson and Chris Thompson. Honorary pall bearers were the rest of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Fjelstul Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Irene, 84, died Monday, August 21, 2000 at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital.

Irene Thompson was born April 8, 1916 at Clarkfield, MN, the daughter of August and Julia (Riste) Anderson. She was baptized on April 30, 1916 in Clarkfield, and confirmed at Decorah Lutheran Church on June 16, 1929 by Rev. O. Glesne. Her family later moved to Decorah where she attended school.

On February 1, 1938 she married Nathan John Thompson.

She was employed at the County Home as a Nurse’s Aid for 26 years.

She was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church.

Irene enjoyed embroidery work and was recognized for her volunteer work sewing quilts and towels for the County Home’s Bazaars. She liked gardening and flowers.

Survivors include one daughter: Julia Snyder of Decorah; one son: Ernest of Cresco; 13 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

Irene was preceded in death by one daughter: Karen Tangeman on January 4, 2000; one grandson; her parents; three brothers: Ernie, Clifford and Eddie; and one sister: Gladys Anderson.

 

 

 

 


Chester Haven

Funeral services for Chester A. Haven of Redlands, CA were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Cortner Chapel in Redlands. Interment was in Riverside National Cemetery.

Chester, 83, died Wednesday at home.

Chester, a native of Lime Springs, lived in Redlands for 16 years.

He was a real estate broker for Chester Haven Real Estate for 20 years. He was a member of the Shriner’s Club.

Survivors include his wife, Bernadette C.; one son: Chester, Jr. of Corona; one daughter: Sharon K. Clanin of Garden Grove; one sister: Norma Wallace of Jesup; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.


Vivian Soukup

Funeral services for Vivian Soukup of Spillville were held Saturday, August 26 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. Rev. Donald Hawes officiated. Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, Spillville. Pall bearers were: Jim Balik, Bob Clausen, Stanley Shevik, Dave Mashek, Howard Taylor and Marvin Soukup, Sr. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Vivian, 81, died Tuesday, August 22, 2000 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco after a long illness.

Vivian John Soukup was born June 28, 1919 on the family farm near Protivin, the son of Joseph and Albina (Pecinovsky) Soukup. He attended country school.

On August 27, 1940 he married Lucille Barloon at the Assumption Catholic Church in Little Turkey. He farmed near Jackson Junction until 1953 when he moved to Spillville and worked as a mechanic at the Allis Chalmers and John Deere stores in Fort Atkinson, retiring in 1981. He also was the Spillville Policeman for 18 years.

During his retirement he did mechanic work for many area farmers, did lawn work for people in town and had a large garden.

Survivors include two daughters: Elaine Spence of Rudolph, OH, and Carol Phillips of Palo; ten grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother: Cyril of Ingram, TX; and one sister: Evelyn Bearman of New Hampton.

Vivian was preceded in death by his wife Lucille in 1995 and his parents.


Gladys Pecinovsky

Funeral services for Gladys Pecinovsky of Cresco were held Monday, August 28 at 11:00 a.m. at the Madison Lutheran Church, rural Decorah. Pastors Phillip and Ginny Olson presided. Pall bearers were: Richard Jevne, Jim Womeldorf, Roger Vick, Earl Ostrander, Mark Bruening and Henry Miene. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Gladys, 79, died Wednesday, August 23, 2000 at Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco.

Gladys Dorothea Pecinovsky was born June 27, 1921 near Decorah, the daughter of Herfred and Mary (Hellestvedt) Vick. She was baptized and confirmed in Pontoppidan Lutheran Church in Glenwood Township. Gladys attended the Glenwood rural school.

On June 4, 1942 she married Truman Engen. To this union, five children were born. They farmed in the Decorah and Harmony areas. He died October 26, 1968. On October 16, 1976 she married Donald J. Pecinovsky at Madison Lutheran Church.

Gladys was a member of Madison Lutheran Church, ALCW, VFW, Parents without Partners, and NARFE. She was active in her church, singing in the church choir and teaching Sunday School for more than 30 years.

She liked to embroider, quilt, clean, sing, dance, work in her flower graden, play cards, and add to her elephant collection.

Survivors include her husband Donald J.; two sons: Gerald of Blaine, MN and Vince of Aurora, IL; two daughters: Sharon Roher and Linda Hjelmeland both of Decorah; her step-children: Sue Downey and Linda Rose both of Colorado Springs, CO, and Mike Pesky of Sioux City; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Myrtle Boe and Eleaor Womeldorf both of Decorah.

Gladys was preceded in death by her first husband Truman Engen; one son: David on September 16, 1973; her parents; two brothers: Vernon and Norman Vick; and two sisters: Hilda Jevne and Cora Ostrander.


Kenneth Lueschow Sr.

Funeral services for Kenneth Lueschow Sr. of Cresco were held Monday, August 28 at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Rev. Bruce Hobert officiated. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Pall bearers were: Dustin Swatek, Dennis Lueschow, Adam Lueschow, Garry Christensen, Trinity Lueschow and Ardell Passehl. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Kenneth, 72, died Thursday, August 24, 2000 at his home.

Kenneth A. Lueschow, Sr. was born July 20, 1928 in Edgar, WI, the son of Arthur and Emmy (Borchardt) Lueschow. He attended school in the Edgar area.

On April 30, 1955 he married Shirley Bauman at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Edgar, WI. In 1965, they moved to Cresco where they owned and operated the Cresco Egg Market, then Kenneth became an independent grain dealer with their own trucking business, and in later years worked at Northern Auto Systems until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife Shirley of Cresco; three sons: Kenneth W. Jr. of Cresco, Kelvin also of Cresco, and Kent of Gillette, WY; two daughters: Kay Praska of Gillette, WY and Karla Baumler of Waucoma; 15 grandchildren; one brother: James of Madison, WI; one sister: Caroline Passehl of Edgar, WI; and two step-brothers: Leonard Leffel of Fenwood, WI, and Marvin Leffel of Colby, WI.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents and his step-mother, Myrtle.


Jack Lingbeck 

Funeral services for Jack Lingbeck of Cresco were held on Sunday, August 27 at 12:00 noon at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Rev. Bruce M. Hobert officiated. Interment was in Cherry Grove Cemetery, south of Spring Valley, MN. Pall bearers were his nephews: Allen and Roger Vrieze, Paul and Duane Douglas, Allan and Delbert Mandelko. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Jack died Thursday, August 24, 2000 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital.

Jack Lingbeck was born April 27, 1915 in Cottonwood County, Minnesota, the son of John and Mae (Courthouse) Lingbeck. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He grew up in Lime Springs.

On July 27, 1938 he married Lanora Krueger in Cresco. Jack worked for the Garrison Company, the Skelly Oil Company in Cresco as a delivery man of fuel oil, and the Cresco Public School as a custodian.

He spent his leisure hours with his hobby of woodworking.

Jack was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed the outdoors, watching wildlife, hunting and fishing.

He was a member of the Wildlife Club, having served as president.

Survivors include his wife Lanora of Cresco; one daughter: Betty Bluhm of Longmont, CO; one son: Gary of Rochester, MN; three grandchildren; and one sister: Anna Vrieze of Spring Valley, MN.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Hyo, Otto, Lymn, Clause, and Bill; and seven sisters: May Monthy, Alice Halling, Grace Vrieze, Dena Douglas, Annie Lingbeck, Heneretta Lingbeck, and Ida Lingbeck.


Gertie Bigalk

Funeral services for Gertrude “Gertie” Bigalk were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 2, 2000 at the Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with interment in Calvary Cemetery. The Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiated with the Conway Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pall bearers were: Tom Vachta, Lonnie Langreck, Jim Beckman, Harold Berge, John Ryan and David Whalen.

Gertie, 79, died Sunday, August 27, 2000 at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN, following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Gertrude Mary Bigalk was born near Cresco in Winneshiek County on May 7, 1921, the daughter of Ole and Anna (McCabe) Anderson. She attended the rural schools of Winneshiek County.

On August 13, 1970 she married Wayne Bigalk in Denver, CO. She was a lifelong member of the Assumption Catholic Church and member of the Assumption Altar and Rosary Society.

Gertie worked as a doctor’s office nurse for 27 years at the Cresco Medical Center.

She is survived by two sisters: Agnes Beckman of Harmony, MN; and Theresa Vachta of Cresco.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Wayne in 1977; her parents; six brothers: Garnet, Orville, Clarence, Gregory, Leo and Francis; and two sisters: Lucille Carolan and Pauline Anderson who died in infancy.
