Orville Qualle

Funeral services for Orville Qualle were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 3 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. The Rev. Bruce Hobert officiated. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Orville Norris Qualle was born January 1, 1920 in Bemidji, MN, the son of Gunder P. and Emma E. (Hanson) Qualle. His early years were spent in Bemidji and he graduated from Bemidji High School in 1939. Orville enlisted in the Army Air Corp on December 30, 1941, and was discharged on December 11, 1945.

On January 14, 1950 he married Imogene C. Anderson of Mt. Pleasant.

Orville was a heavy equipment operator for L.E. Myers Company for twenty-five years and belonged to the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) Union for 50 years. His work of installing electrical poles was a source of much satisfaction and was the reason he moved 19 times in 21 years. He moved to Cresco in the mid-sixties.

Orville was active in the V.F.W. and the American Legion.

Orville, following surgery in 1996 to repair a broken hip, entered Cresco Care Center and in 1998, following surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his throat, entered the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah. Orville died Sunday, January 30, 2000 at the age of 80.

Survivors include two daughters: Paula Lapic of Rochester, MN; and Kristin Moen of Cresco; two grandsons; two brothers: Buiford of Bemidji, MN, and Glenn of Brooklyn Center, MN.

Orville was preceded in death by his wife Imogene; and two children in infancy: a son, Gerald, and a daughter, Norrine; and his parents.


Harry Adams

 Funeral services for Harry Adams of Chester were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 5 at St. Stephens Catholic Church in Chester. The Rev. John Moser officiated. Interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista. Jim and Mary Adams placed the pall. Pall bearers were: Roger Kolbet, Robert Kolbet, Dan Gebel, Dale Kolbet, Ken Kolbet, and Tom Gebel. Honorary pall bearers were: Leon Kolbet, Don Gebel, Kevin Kolbet, and Phil Kolbet. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Harry, 85, died Wednesday, February 2, 2000 at his home in Chester of natural causes.

Harry Steven Adams was born March 13, 1914 near Deerfield, the son of Samuel and Anna (Waters) Adams. He was raised near Deerfield by his grandparents. He attended country school near his home. After his schooling he operated a farm near Deerfield.

On April 9, 1947 he married Evelyn Kolbet at St. Bernard’s Church in Alta Vista. After their marriage the couple resided near Deerfield before moving to a farm near Chester in 1951. Harry retired from farming in 1970 and began doing carpentry work.

He was a member of St. Stephens Catholic Church in Chester and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council in Elma.

He loved gardening, woodworking and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn of Chester; two sons: Jim and John both of Rochester, MN; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Gene

Elaine Kobliska

Funeral services for Elaine Kobliska of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 7 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. The Rev. Roger R. Rethamel officiated. Interment was in St. Patricks Cemetery at St. Cecilia. Her mother and sisters placed the pall. Pall bearers were: Steve and Sheila Kobliska, Bob Messersmith, Dawn Schultz, Jan Crandall and Garry McGee. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Elaine, 31, died Thursday, February 3 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo of injuries sustained in a car/pedestrian accident.

Elaine Frances Kobliska was born March 11, 1968 in Osage, the daughter of Francis and Shirley (Rilling) Kobliska. She graduated from New Hampton High School in 1986. After her schooling she spent several years serving as a nanny in Baltimore and Minnesota. She moved back to New Hampton in 1992. While in New Hampton she worked as a baby sitter for her sisters.

She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and riding her bicycle.

Survivors include her mother Shirley of Charles City; three sisters: Doris Kobliska of Iowa City, Rose Heying of Alta Vista, and Judy Scholbrock of New Hampton.

Elaine was preceded in death by her father Francis in 1992; one brother Edward in 1966; and maternal and paternal grandparents.

Lyle Houdek

Funeral services for Lyle Houdek of New Lisbon, WI were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 7 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Caledonia. The Rev. Donald Schmitz officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Caledonia. McCormick Funeral Home of Caledonia handled the arrangements.

Lyle, 67, died Friday, February 4, 2000 at St. Joseph’s Hospice in Marshfield, WI of lung cancer.

Lyle Charles Houdek was born August 18, 1932 in Winneshiek County, the son of Carl and Mayme (Shileny) Houdek. He attended rural schools and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from September 11, 1952 to July 2, 1954. Following this military service he returned to the Cresco area.

On September 14, 1957 he married Geneva Reicks at Cresco. She died May 2, 1978. Lyle was a retired farmer and a machinery dealer. He enjoyed collecting antique toy tractors.

Survivors include three sons: Jim, Wayne and Darrel all of Caledonia, MN; four daughters: Linda Anderson of Winona, MN, Sharon Svoboda of Stewartville, MN, Elaine Stika of Cresco, and Dr. Carol Houdek of Austin, MN; 18 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one brother: Donald of Cresco.

Lyle was preceded in death by his wife Geneva; one son: Lyle Robert Houdek on February 24, 1997; and his parents.

M. Christensen

Funeral services for Marjorie Christensen will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, February 9 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. Interment will be in Clarinda Cemetery in Clarinda on Friday, February 11. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Majorie, 90, died Saturday, February 5, 2000 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Marjorie Christensen was born October 22, 1909 in Clarinda, the daughter of Harry and Mabel Kling. She graduated from Clarinda High School.

On July 17, 1932 she married C.E. Christensen in Fremont, NE. They moved to Cresco in 1940 when Chris became the manager of the REC.

She has made her home here since that time until ill health required her to move to the nursing home in New Hampton.

Survivors include two sons: Larry Christensen of Cresco, and Ed Christensen of New Hampton; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister: Lucille Bredenstiener of Tarkio, MO.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband C.E. in 1987; and two brothers: Ab and Bernard.

Christopher Rohm

Funeral services for Christopher Rohm of Coralville were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 10 at Lensing’s Oak Hill Funeral Service in Coralville. The Rev. Davis Aanonson of Christ the King Lutheran Church officiated.

Christopher Rohm, infant son of Jeffrey and Denise Flatland Rohm, died Monday, February 7, 2000 at University of Iowa Health Care.

Christopher was born Friday, February 4, 2000 in Iowa City.

Survivors include his parents, Jeffrey and Denise; two brothers: Zachary and Nicholas at home; maternal grandmother: Margaret Flatland of Cresco; paternal grandparents: Charles and Karen Rohm of Coralville; and paternal great-grandfather: Walter Kemper of Muscatine.

Christopher was preceded in death by one brother: Michael and his maternal great-grandfather: Jesse.


Caroline Hovden

 Funeral services for Caroline Hovden of Ridgeway were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 14 at Madison Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway. The Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson officiated. Interment was in Madison Lutheran Cemetery. Pall bearers were: Andrew Hovden, Steven Hovden, Bradley Hovden, Terry Hovden, Ivan Hovden, and Randy Olson. Fjelstul Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Caroline, 86, died Thursday, February 10, 2000 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Caroline Elizabeth Hovden was born August 22, 1913 at home in Madison Township, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Schrubbe) Yarwood. She was baptized into the Christian faith in October 1913 and confirmed as an adult on August 10, 1941 at the Madison Lutheran Church. She attended the Knutson School and was a graduate of Ridgeway High School.

On January 10, 1934 she married Gerald E. Hovden at the Methodist Parsonage in Ridgeway. During their marriage, Caroline farmed with Gerald and cared for a number of invalid family members in her home.

She was a member of the Madison Lutheran Church and active in the Madison W/ELCA.

Survivors include three sons: Maynard, Wayne and Dennis all of Ridgeway; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Caroline was preceded in death by her husband Gerald on April 27, 1987; her parents; three brothers: Leonard, Herbert and Edward; one sister: Jessie Herman; two half-brothers: Lloyd and Harold Yarwood; and two half sisters: Bessie (in infancy) and Grace.

William Polashek

Funeral services for William Polashek were held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 14 at St. Joseph’s Worship Center in Cresco. The Rev. Michael L. Tauke officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pall bearers were: Francis Polashek, Paul and Mark Montague, David Bond, and Dennis and Daniel Chvatal. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

William, 97, died Thursday, February 10, 2000 at his home in Cresco.

William Joseph Polashek was born February 5, 1903 at Chelsea, the son of William and Rose (Bittner) Polashek. As a boy, the family moved to Protivin where Bill received his education, and grew to manhood.

On June 30, 1924 he married Rose Prasek at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church. The family moved to Cresco and Bill was an owner of Polashek’s Grocery Store. When he retired from the grocery, he did carpentry work.

Survivors include two daughters: Mildred Daley and Connie Kepros both of Cresco; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

William was preceded in death by his wife Rose on May 31, 1991; two daughters: Sr. Eloise Polashek SSSF in 1997 and Rita Kepros in 1981; his parents; four brothers: Frank and Joseph in infancy, Emil and Vincent; and five sisters: Mary Novak, Sr. Sophie Polashek SSSF, Stella Shimak, Sr. Mary Milada (Agnes) Polashek SSSF, and Anna Pecinovsky Kovar.

Marian Sisk

Funeral services for Marian (Hennesey) Sisk of Thornton, CO were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 22 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. The Rev. Donald Hawes officiated. Interment was in St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery in Calmar. French Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Marian, 79, died Sunday, February 13, 2000 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver, CO following a short illness.

Leonard Steinmetz, Jr.

Funeral services for Leonard Steinmetz, Jr. were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 19 at Immanual Lutheran Church in Cresco. The Rev. Bruce Hobert officiated. Interment was in Howard Center Cemetery. Honorary pall bearers were: Adolph Brenno, Don Neubauer, Gareth Vagts, Frank Jackson, Wayne Olson, Raymond Baumgartner, Vern Mahlis. Pall bearers were: Scott Wibben, Craig Chyle, Jeff Wibben, Jason Wibben, Tim McFadden, Todd Neubauer. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Leonard, Jr., 74, died Tuesday, February 15, 2000 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco following complications from strokes.

Leonard Steinmetz, Jr. was born May 8, 1925 in Winneshiek County, the son of Leonard and Sigrid (Otteson) Steinmetz. He was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1943. Leonard excelled in baseball, and was a member of 4-H and shared his love for Black Angus cattle.

In 1943, he enlisted in the Navy and served overseas during World War II and in the Korean War.

On October 17, 1948 he married Adah Phipps at the Madison Lutheran Church near Ridgeway. Following their marriage Leonard worked for many years for the Northern Iowa Oil Company.

He was a lifelong member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Adah; one daughter: Ann E. Hall of Cynthiana, KY; one son: Mark of Cresco; two granddaughters; one brother: Charles of Washington DC; and three sisters: Lois Gunhus of Decorah, Marian Wibben of Stewartville, MN, and Janet McFadden of Overland Park, KS.

Leonard, Jr. was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers: Harold and Robert.

Doreen Burns

Funeral services for Doreen Burns of Riceville were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 21 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville. The Rev. John Mosher officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Ricevile. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Doreen, 75, died Thursday, February 17, 2000 at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Doreen Burns was born June 12, 1924 in Watford, England, the daughter of James and Ivy Borthwick. She attended local schools and during WWII served by running search lights and special radar jamming signal.

On November 30, 1943 she married Robert J. Burns in Watford, England. Doreen always took great pride in having been a war bride.

Survivors include one son: James Burns of Freeland, MI; one daughter: Madeline Burns of Waterloo; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother: James of Watford, England.

Doreen was preceded in death by her husband Robert on June 6, 1995; her parents; and two sisters.

Darwin Harding

Memorial services for Darwin Harding were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 29 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco. The Rev. Tim Sir officiated. Burial of ashes will be at a later date.

Darwin, 58, died Sunday, February 17, 2000 at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, IA of natural causes.

Darwin Stanley Harding was born on November 26, 1941, at Kandiyohi, MN, the son of Thomas and Jessie (Blahoski) Harding.

After school he went to the United States Army from 1961 to 1964. He later began trucking and in the early 1970’s came to Cresco while working with Johnsrud Trucking. Eventually, he went on to truck for himself.

Survivors include two sons: Bob of Oelwein and Craig of El Paso, TX; three daughters: Karen McGrane of Shellsburg, Barb Jagerson of Austin, MN, and Becky Jahr of Cresco; four grandchildren; his mother: Leona Harding of Eloy, AZ; two brothers: Duane of Litchfield, MN and Darrell of Arizona City, AZ; and two sisters: Lila Bergh of St. Cloud, MN and Linda Lawson of Arizona City, AZ.

Darwin was preceded in death by one son: David in infancy and one brother: Donald.

Amelia Lentz

Funeral services for Amelia Lentz of Alta Vista were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 22 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Alta Vista. The Rev. Roger R. Rethamel officiated. Interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista. Her granddaughters placed the pall on the casket. Honorary pall bearers were her great granddaughters: Jill Ann Armstrong, Jessica Donahe, Gina Gillespie, Kylie Beam, Tina and Anna Beam, Anna Zobeck, Tansy Schroeder and Jamie Frizzell. Pall bearers were her grandsons: Vince and Jim Beam, Todd Lentz and Mark, Steve and Jesse Zobeck. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Amelia, 84, died Friday, February 18, 2000 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN after a short illness.

Amelia Mary Chihak was born September 27, 1915 in Jacksonville Township, rural New Hampton, the daughter of James and Caroline (Praska) Chihak. She graduated from New Hampton High School.

On September 30, 1936 she married Vincent J. Lentz at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Hampton. Following their marriage, they farmed near Alta Vista for a number of years before moving into the community.

Millie was a homemaker before becoming a teacher for the country school. After the death of her husband in 1972 she worked as a bookkeeper for Mahoney Oil Co. until her retirement.

Survivors include three daughters: Beverly Beam of Fort Dodge, Janet Schroeder of Long Beach, CA, and Carol Zobeck of Elma; 18 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Amelia was preceded in death by her husband Vincent in 1972; one son: Louis J.; two grandsons; and three brothers: Alphonse, Virgil and Emil.

Lucille Conrad

Memorial services for Lucille Conrad of Colorado Springs, CO, and formerly of the Cresco area, will be held today at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 23 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs. Inurnment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home of Colorado Springs, CO will handle the arrangements.

Lucille, 79, died Friday, February 18, 2000 at a hospital in Colorado Springs.

Lucille Minnie Conrad was born February 10, 1921 in Sumner, the daughter of Henry and Minnie (Berends) Schwerin. She was self employed at Conrad’s Fabrics, and a former secretary at Penrose Hospital.

On May 26, 1947 she married Richard H. Conrad.

Survivors include her husband; one son; one daughter; and two sisters.

Lucille was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.

Mildred Van Auken

Funeral services for Mildred Van Auken, formerly of Des Moines and Masonville, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 24 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Masonville. The Rev. David Kucera will officiate. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Masonville. Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home in Manchester will handle the arrangements.

Mildred, 89, died Friday, February 18, 2000 at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester after a short illness.

Mildred M. Van Auken was born October 19, 1910 in New England, ND, the daughter of Patrick H. and Mary Ann (Ryan) Diggins. She was baptized on November 11, 1910 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New England. At a young age, she moved with her family to Masonville. She graduated from Xavier High School in Manchester, and then taught school in the Masonville area.

On August 31, 1932 she married Floyd G. Van Auken at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Masonville. The couple lived in Manchester, Audubon, Cresco and then Des Moines.

She was active in her church and did volunteer work. She loved bowling, playing Bridge, making crafts and was self-taught on the organ.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Floyd on November 14, 1981; her parents; two brothers: Harry and John T.; and three sisters: Catherine Mersch, Eileen Rollins, and Imogene Houlihan.

Adolph Hayek

Funeral services for Adolph Hayek were held at 12:00 noon Tuesday, February 22 at the Assumption Worship Center in Cresco. The Rev. Michael L. Tauke officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pall bearers were: Adam, Jonathan and Phillip Hayek, Christopher Weigert, Amy Kapler, Andy Reisner, Jodi Kappes, and Pete Andera. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Adolph, 82, died Saturday, February 19, 2000 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Adolph John Hayek was born December 27, 1917 in Winneshiek County, near Fort Atkinson, the son of Philip and Celia (Shindelar) Hayek. He attended the rural schools, and returned home to help his father on the family farm. He started hauling cream and did this for a time before and after his marriage.

On October 28, 1941 he married Dolores Mae Hosting at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. After their marriage, they made their home outside of Fort Atkinson, until they moved north of Cresco about 1943. In 1948, they moved to their farm southeast of Cresco where he raised a family of 14 children. At this time, he did custom silo filling. He farmed many acres, raising cattle, hogs, chickens, and in the early years, horses. Adolph moved into the Cresco Care Center in November of 1995.

Adolph was a member of the Assumption Catholic church and Farm Bureau.

He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, gardening and hunting.

Survivors include seven sons: Adolph W. of Washington, D.C., James of Hoodsport, WA, Joseph, Jerome, and Julius all of Cresco, Jay of Strandquist, MN, Jean of Kent, WA; six daughters: JoAnn Andera of Manly, Joyce Kapler of Cresco, Jacqueline Reisner of Winterset, Jane Steffen of Decorah, Janet Hodges of Harmony, MN, and Julie Hayek of Royal Oak, MI; 23 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother: Edward of Spillville; two sisters: Edith Balk of Waucoma and Marcella Blong of Mason City.

Adolph was preceded in death by his wife Dolores on October 19, 1996; a son John on September 8, 1959; his parents; one brother: Raymond; and one sister: Levina Lentz.

Sister Mary Beata

Funeral services for Sister Mary Beata of Farmington Hills, MI were held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 25 at McAuley Center Chapel. Interment was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Sister Mary Beata, a Sister of Mercy for 69 years, died February 23, 2000 at McAuley Retirement Center, Farmington Hills, following an extended illness.

Sister was born Gertrude Ann Clynch, daughter of Thomas and Alice Clynch, in Lourdes, and attended Our Lady of Lourdes School in Elma. At the age of 20, she joined the Sisters of Mercy at Mt. St. Agnes, Dubuque.

She was educated for her profession at Mercy College, Detroit, and the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., and earned a Masters Degree in Library Science at Rosary College, River Forest, IL.

Sister began her teaching career in elementary grades at St. Mary School, Larchwood. Through the years she taught in other Iowa schools, including Mt. Carmel, Waterloo (Eagle Center); St. Clement, Epworth (Bankston); Sacred Heart, Ackley and St. John, Independence.

In 1956 she became librarian at Our Lady of Mercy High School, then located in Detroit, and subsequently was librarian at Mt. Mercy Academy, Grand Rapids; St Mary, Bay City; and again in Iowa, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, where she also served as patient care hostess.

In 1970 Sister Beata retired to a life of prayer at McAuley Convent on the campus of Loras College. She resided there until 1984, when she moved to the Farmington Hills retirement center.

Survivors include one sister: Alice Granger of Bourbonnais, IL.

Marvin Kleve

Funeral services for Marvin Kleve were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 26 at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Postville. The Rev. Paul Oderkirk was the Presider and The Rev. Leo Riley, The Rev. Linus Razing, The Rev. Art Kleve, The Rev. Donald Hawes and The Rev. Cletus Hawes Con-celebrated the Mass. Interment was in St. Aloysius Cemetery at Calmar. Honorary pall bearers were his grandchildren: Megan Kleve, Lori, Melissa, Jolene, Becky, Craig and Wendy Kleve, Beth Kleve, Krystal Looby, Stacey, Kelli and Blake Uhlenhake; Danielle, Derek, Katlin, Kimberly, and Phillp Kleve. Pall bearers were grandsons: Corey Kleve, Brandon Kleve, Nathan Kleve, Collin Looby; Godsons: Darin Kleve and Shawn Kleve. Schutte Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Marvin, 65, died Wednesday, February 23, 2000.

Marvin John Kleve was born January 1, 1935 in rural Calmar, the son of Edward and Mathilda (Wenthold) Kleve. He was baptized on January 2, 1935, received his first communion on May 17, 1943, and confirmed at the age 12 on April 27, 1947 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. Marvin attended St. Aloysius School, graduated from eighth grade and received his GED from NICC in Calmar where he also graduated from the NICC “Carpenter Program”.

On September 27, 1954 he married Alvera Tillman at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waucoma. They farmed in the Lawler, Cresco, Ossian and Castalia areas. They moved to Postville in 1984. Marvin did construction work and later established his own business “Kleve Construction”.

Marvin was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, serving as Deputy Grand Knight. He enjoyed following his grandchildrens’ sports activities and music concerts, polka dancing, playing cards doing roofing and carpentry work.

Survivors include his wife, Alvera; six sons: Jerald of Postville, Robert of Castalia, Dennis of Calmar, Bruce of Castalia, Duane of Holmen, WI and Scott of Postville; two daughters: Cynthia Uhlenhake of Ossian and Barbara Looby of Calmar; 21 grandchildren; one sister: Betty Wurzer of Lawler; and two brothers: Herbert and Linus both of Calmar.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Paul.

Clifford Burgess

Funeral services for Clifford Burgess were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 26 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. The Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiated. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Pall bearers weregrandchildren: Brian, Dawn, Chad, Wendy, Kristy, and Shelly Burgess, Debbie Gilson, Adam Bernick, Chasity Griffith, Cathy Meinecke, Brad, Brian, Bruce and Michelle Hove and Linda Ravens. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Clifford, 87, died Wednesday, February 23, 2000 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Clifford Lester Burgess was born July 25, 1912 in Orleans Township, Winneshiek County, the son of George and Emma (Greenslade) Burgess. He attended the rural school and graduated from the Cresco High School.

On March 27, 1937 he married Edith Ione Shuttleworth at Edith’s parents home. They lived all of their lives in the Cresco area.

Cliff was a farmer, a long-time member of the Board of Trustees of Vernon Springs township, a lifetime member of the United Methodist church and was a former member of the Cresco Saddle Club.

Survivors include two daughters: Diana Hove of Kankakee, IL and Rosalie Bernick of Falling Waters, WV; two sons: George and Richard both of Cresco; 15 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Clifford was preceded in death by his wife Edith on August 23, 1995; one son: Thomas; one grandson; his parents; three brothers: James, John and Charles; and three sisters: Ellen Daly, Catherine Williams, and Vera Price.

Ardyth Nath

Funeral services for Ardyth Nath of Riceville were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 28 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville. The Rev. Matthew Versemann officiated. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ardyth, 64, died Thursday, February 24, 2000 at her residence after an extended illness.

Ardyth Jean Nath was born September 12, 1935 in Tama County, the daughter of Warren and Mildred (Tomlinson) Gray. She attended local schools and graduated from Riceville High School in 1953.

On September 29, 1955 she married Richard Nath at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville.

Survivors include her husband Richard; three sons: Doug and Dana both of Riceville, and Christopher of Fraser, CO one daughter: Debora Wright of Carbondale, CO; five grandchildren; two brothers: Howard Gray of Sauk Centre, MN and Dr. James Gray of Spring Grove, MN; two sisters: Elaine Robinson of Fenton, MI and Evelyn Watson of Lime Springs.

Ardyth was preceded in death by her parents.

JoEtta Dohlman

Funeral services for JoEtta Dohlman of Chester will be held today at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 1 at the LeRoy Lutheran Church in LeRoy. The Rev. Tom Kolden and Rev. Rhea Evanson will officiate. Interment will be in the LeRoy Lutheran Church Cemetery in LeRoy. Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home will handle the arrangements.

JoEtta, 62, died Sunday night, February 27, 2000 at the St. Mary’s Emergency Room in Rochester.

JoEtta H. Dohlman was born July 26, 1937 in Roland, the daughter of Marion and Cordelia Wierson. She attended and graduated from LeRoy High School in 1955.

On June 10, 1955 she married Floyd Dohlman at the Little Brown church in Nashua. JoEtta worked at a variety of jobs and was currently working at Laddy’s Bar and Grill as a cook and bartender.

She enjoyed the outdoors and gardening.

Survivors include five daughters: Connie Granahan of LeRoy, Rhonda Larson of Chester, Sandra Burke of Lime Springs, Pam Edwards of Chester and Valerie Schroeder of Elma; one son: William at the Red Wing Care Center; 18 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters: Charlotte Sandve of Ames, Helen Swenson and Norma Stevens both of LeRoy, and Marlene Kellogg of Taopi, MN; and one brother: Jerry of Ostrander, MN.

JoEtta was preceded in death by her husband in 1990; an infant son, and her parents.
