Ann Van Roekel

Memorial services for Ann Van Roekel of La Mesa, CA formerly of Waterford were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 10 at Coats Funeral Home, Waterford. The Rev. Dr. Dale Miller officiated. Interment was in Ottawa Park Cemetery.

Ann, 72, died Saturday, April 1, 2000.

She is survived by three sons: John of Ann Arbor, Steve and Roger both of Waterford; four grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; and one brother: Dwight Moorhead of Colorado.

Ann was preceded in death by her husband Paul. Her husband was Assistant County Engineer of Howard County in the late forties and early fifties.

Eugene Aberg

Funeral services for Eugene Aberg were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 7 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. The Rev. Bruce Hobert officiated. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Pall bearers were: Mark Grinhaug, Don Davis, Joe Hensley, Eugene Gunhus, Gareth Vagts, and Alvin Sommer. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Eugene, 69, died Monday, April 3, 2000, at Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City of cancer.

Eugene Edward Aberg was born August 29, 1930 in Saratoga, the son of Martin and Julia (Citek) Aberg. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1948, with the distinction of winning the Iowa 129 pound state wrestling championship, and being a member of Cresco’s 1948 state championship wrestling team under coach George (Chris) Flanagan. He was class president and played football, track, and baseball. He joined the Marine Corps in 1948 and served in the Korean War Conflict. He was wounded, and was awarded a Purple Heart. He served his country with distinction and was the recipient of various decorations and awards for his service. He was honorably discharged as a platoon Sergeant from the Marine Corps in 1956.

On April 5, 1953 he married Dorothy Marie Blaser. Gene lived in Cresco until his wife’s death in 1997; he then moved to Lime Springs. When Gene was diagnosed with cancer, he moved back to Cresco. While living in Cresco, he worked for the Iowa State Highway Commission, was Public Works Director for the City of Cresco, and Parks and Recreation Director for Cresco until his retirment in 1995.

Gene was well known in the Cresco area for his devoted service to his community. He served on the Cresco city Council, Church council, Sunday School teacher, lay minister at Immanuel Lutheran Church, VFW, volunteer work on the Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota, and co-author of a book, along with Raymond McGee entitled “Our Veterans in War and Peace”.

Survivors include three sons: Jim of Mason City, Kirk of San Marcos, CA, and Donald of Grimes; one daughter: Erica Tlusty of Mason City; 10 grandchildren; four brothers: Gerald, Harold, Ronnie, and Donnie; and four sisters: Gladys Anderson, Dorothy Woods, Helen Kakec, and Ruth Duneman.

Eugene was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy; his parents; one brother: Clarence; and one sister: Martha in infancy.

John Swestka

Funeral services for John Swestka of Protivin were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 7 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. The Rev. Allen Schmitt officiated. Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Protivin.The pall was placed on the casket by his wife and children. Pall bearers were: Dean Lukes, Todd Townsend, Matt Mashek, Kirk Swestka, Chad Jensen, Jason Swestka, Brian Swestka and Bobby Swestka. Hugeback’s Protivin Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

John, 81, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at the Cresco Care Center of natural causes.

John C. Swestka was born January 27, 1919 in rural Protivin, son of John C. and Rosy (Pecinovsky) Swestka. He attended school in Protivin graduating from Rudolphinum in 1936.

On May 14, 1941 he married Marcella Denner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Hampton. The couple lived and farmed west of Protivin until John retired from farming in 1975 at which time they moved to Protivin. During the years on the farm and while in town, John owned and operated the Protivin Saw Mill until 1984. John did woodworking after moving to town and had made many items for all the children, grandchildren, and friends.

Memberships and activities include: Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Holy Trinity Church Board, the Church and Czech Choirs, the Farm Bureau, a seed dealer for Asgrow, Maintenance Manager of the Protivin Apartments, Manager of the Protivin Community Center, and he was a co-chair of the first Czech Days Festival.

Survivors include his wife, Marcella; four sons: Art of Protivin, Ron, John, and Gary all of Cresco; four daughters: Rita Lukes of Rochester, MN, Donna Townsend of Grinnell, Mary Jean Mashek of Jesup, and Sheryl Jensen of Byron, MN; 19 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; his parents; three brothers: Louis, Leonard, and Godfrey; and two sisters: Emma Komarek and Theresa Komarek.

Ella Miles

Funeral services for Ella Miles of Riceville were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 8 at the First Congregational United Church of Chirst in Riceville. The Rev. Thomas Mowbray and Rev. Dan Duggan officiated. Interment will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ella, 92, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Ella Sophia Miles was born July 18, 1907 in Gronhoj, Denmark, the daughter of Lars and Louise Nielsen. She worked as a nanny for a family in Instrup and later as a mother’s helper in Copenhagen. This enabled her to earn money for her passage to the United States while she waited for her quota number to be reached.

At the age of seventeen, Ella arrived in the United States to join her brother Niels and sister Marie realizing she may never be reunited with her family again. She landed at Ellis Island Immigration Center on November 24, 1924. She came to Iowa by train where she lived with her sister and family and attended country school for six weeks to learn English.

Ella worked at Kakac’s Store and in their home in Saratoga.

On December 8, 1926 she married Donald Miles. They farmed east of Riceville and lived there until Donald’s death in 1984.

Ella served on the Howard County Social Welfare Board for over 40 years. She was a member of the Congregational Church and of the Eastern Star.

She enjoyed gardening, needlepoint, knitting, cooking, and travel.

Allthough Ella never saw her parents again, she made several trips to Denmark to visit relatives.

Survivors include two sons: Nelson of Green Valley, AZ and Philip of Prescott, AZ; two daughters: Louise Swanson of Mason City and Linda Pagel of Sumner; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and one sister: Carla in Denmark.

Ella was preceded in death by her husband Donald; two granddaughters; and her parents.

Mary Vlk

Funeral services for Mary Vlk were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 11 at the Assumption Worship Center in Cresco. The Rev. Michael L. Tauke officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pall bearers were: Kevin Vlk, Barb Merritt, Debi Kloberdanz, Karen Pecinovsky, Brad Pecinovsky and Brian Pecinovsky. Conway Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary, 97, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Mary Vlk was born December 8, 1902 at Hayfield, the daughter of John and Josephine (Strnad) Vlk. She attended school during her elementary years and moved with her family from Iowa to Minnesota and back to Iowa. In the late 1940’s, she moved to Cedar Rapids and worked at Mercy Hospital. Following her retirement, she moved back to Cresco to be near her daughter and family.

Mary was a member of the Assumption Catholic Church, and the Assumption Altar and Rosary Society.

She liked to sew, patch clothes, crochet, embroider, play cards, and loved to bake.

Mary is survived by one son: Robert of Hiawatha; one daughter: Angie Drtina of Cresco; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother: Frank of Cresco; and two sisters: Agnes Shileny of Cresco, and Carrie Jirik of Mahnomen, MN.

She was preceded in death by one great grandson; her parents; and John, Henry, and Joseph.

Joyce Ringoen

Funeral services for Joyce Ringoen will be held today, Wednesday, April 12, at 11:00 a.m. at the Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway. The Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson will officiate. Interment will be in the Sanderson Cemetery in rural Ridgeway. Pall bearers are Dennis Bohr, Craig Bohr, Jeff Miller, Curt Moellers, Dean Darling, Todd Baker, Brad Thorson, Don Harvey, David Harvey and Jerry Moellers. Lindstrom Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joyce died Saturday, April 8, 2000, from complications following surgery on Thursday. She was 70 years of age.

Joyce Ringoen was born January 28, 1930 the oldest child of Charles and Florence (Harvey) Baker. She was baptized in 1930 at the Methodist Church in Prosper, MN. Joyce attended school, graduating from Harmony High School in 1948.

On August 28, 1951 she married Robert Ringoen at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco. They farmed for 27.

Joyce is survived by five children: Ronda Hughes, Lori Lepa, and Dale Ringoen, all of Cresco, and Julie Stinson and Gene Ringoen, both of Ridgeway; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Don Baker of Mabel.

She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Leann; her parents; and one sister, Charlene.

Donald Roethler

Funeral services for Donald Roethler of Elma were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 14 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville. The Rev. Matthew Versemann officiated. Inturnment will be in the church cemetery at a later date. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Donald, 67, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000 at his home of cancer.

Donald Joseph Roethler was born May 6, 1932 at the rural Elma farm home of his parents in Howard County, the son of Leo and Mae (Mussmann) Roethler. He attended Afton #4 rural school and was a 1951 graduate of Riceville High School.

On February 12, 1955 he married Lavonne Worple at St. Peter’s Church in Riceville. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. The couple lived in Waterloo for a time after his discharge and later they farmed for 32 years in the Riceville/Elma area before retiring to Elma in 1991.

Don enjoyed playing the guitar and had composed eight contemporary Christian songs. Don and Lavonne enjoyed singing spiritual songs together at church, prayer meetings and at home. His music and gardening brought him joy and peace.

Donald is survived by his wife Lavonne; two children: Bruce of Colonial Manor Home in Elma, and Brenda Schroetter of Lime Springs; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; six brothers: Milo of Waterloo, Wally of Waukon, Kenneth of Charles City, James of Lime Springs, LeRoy of Elma and Robert of Orchard; and one sister: Lavonne Armstrong of Waterloo.

Donald was preceded in death by one grandson; his parents; one brother: John; and one sister: Lucille Roney.

Daniel Blaess

Funeral services for Daniel Blaess of Hiawatha were held Saturday, April 15 at 10:00 a.m. at Notre Dame Parish Assumption Church. The Rev. Michael Tauke officiated. Interment was in the Burr Oak Cemetery at Burr Oak. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Daniel, 25, died Saturday, April 12, 2000 in Hiawatha.

Daniel Blaess was born September 16, 1974 in Portland, OR, the son of Lawrence and Beverly (Blaess) Sutton. He graduated from Crestwood High School and continued on to graduate from chef’s school. He was currently working for Quality Chef Foods in Cedar Rapids.

On June 10, 1995 he married Jody Heisdorffer at St. Peter and Paul’s Church at Harper.

Survivors include his wife Jody, a daughter Ashley, both of Hiawatha; his mother, Beverly Blaess of West Union; his father, Lawrence Sutton of Portland, OR; and two brothers: Douglas Blaess of Fredericksburg and Dustin Winsell of Protivin.

Leon Recker

Funeral services for Leon Recker of Alta Vista were held Monday, April 17 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Alta Vista. The Rev. Roger R. Rethamel officiated. Interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista. The family placed the pall. Pall bearers were: Andy Sinnwell, Ken Northness, Paul Hentges, Tom Mahoney, Syl Whalen, and George Snyder. Conway Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Leon, 69, died Thursday, April 13, 2000 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN of congestive heart failure.

Leon Charles Recker was born June 8, 1930 at Alta Vista, the son of Charles and Rose (Hermsen) Recker. He graduated from St. Williams High School in Alta Vista and farmed with his father from 1944 to 1951. He served with the Air Force during the Korean Conflict as a radio traffic analysis specialist. After his discharge, he graduated from Hamilton Business College in Mason City and then moved to Ames where he was employed by the Iowa Department of Transportation in Ames for 38 years.

On August 28, 1971 he married Taisa Stauber in Ames. After his retirement in 1993, they moved to Alta Vista where they have since made their home.

Survivors include his wife Taisa; one daughter: Susan Guttschow of Paddock Lake, WI; two step children: Robert Recker of St. Cloud, FL, and Tanya Pietron of Omaha, NE; one grandson; and two sisters: Adella Sinnwell of Alta Vista and Marie Recker of New Hampton.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Edwin, Ray, Ambrose, and Louis; and one sister: Leonita Northness.

Richard Cummings

Funeral services for Richard Cummings were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 18 at the Assumption Worship Center in Cresco. The Rev. Michael L. Tauke officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Richard, 63, died Friday, April 14, 2000 at the Regional Health Services Howard County Hospital.

Richard Leo Cummings was born August 17, 1936 in Howard County, the son of Francis and Mary (Harris) Cummings.

On November 27, 1957 he married Marlene Barnes at Holy Cross Church in Schley.

Dick spent eight years in the United States Air Force, serving in the Korean Conflict. In 1968, Dick and his family returned to the Cresco area. He was an auctioneer and real estate agent for 16 years, before retiring due to health.

Dick was a member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW, American Legion, Assumption Parish Council, officer of the Notre Dame Home School Association, and on the board at the Evans Memorial Home.

Richard is survived by his wife Marlene of Cresco; two daughters: Julie Titus of Spearfish, SD, and Jill McConnell of Cresco; four grandchildren; and four sisters: Irene McGee of Austin, MN, Edna Miller, Geneva Peckham, and Margaret Burkett all of Cresco.

Richard was preceded in death by one grandchild; his parents; five brothers: Donald, George, Thomas, William and James; and one sister: Marie O’Neil.

Irene Marshall

Funeral services for Irene Marshall of Cedar Falls were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 24 at St. Joseph’s Worship Center in Cresco. The Rev. Michael L. Tauke officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pall bearers were grandsons: Ben and Zachary Bailey, Scott Beaton, Derek and Jason Jensen, Chris Langan, and Eric Marshall. Honorary bearers were grandchildren: Brad and Josh Marshall, Terri Benson, Tammy Ewing, and Wendy Rejman. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Irene, 82, died Thursday, April 20, 2000 at at her home after suffering a stroke.

Eleanora Irene Marshall was born August 29, 1917 in Howard County, near Cresco, the daughter of John and Eleanor (Hauber) Barthelme. She attended St. Joseph’s School and Cresco High School.

On November 23, 1940 she married Erwin Marshall at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cresco. She owned and operated the Cresco Dairy Queen until her retirement in 1974.

Irene liked to bake, garden, can pickles, and quilt. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Rosary Society.

Irene is survived by her husband Erwin; five daughters: Janet Langan, Jean Beaton both of Waterloo, Linda Jensen of St. Charles, MO, Marilyn Bailey of Marion, Sharon Storke of Wisconsin Rapids, WI two sons: David of Olympia, WA, and John of Topeka, KS; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; and one sister: Geraldine Fredrickson of Bellview, WA.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Jerome in infancy and Gerald Barthelme; and two sisters: Viola Ferrie and Helen Hove.

Mary Ann Vobr

Funeral services for Mary Ann Vobr were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco with the Rev. Bruce Hobert officiating. Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery. Pall bearers were Chris Bauer, Robert Vobr, Bruce Blaser, Brent Vobr, Matthew Vobr and Brian Vobr. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Ann died at home in her sleep Sunday, April 16, 2000.

Mary Ann Vobr was born January 9, 1927 in Howard County the daughter of Chris and Florence (Lewis) Blaser. She spent her childhood on a farm southeast of Cresco near Cardinal Marsh.

On March 17, 1946, she married Ray Vobr at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Mary worked on the farm with her husband.

Her favorite pastimes were gardening, taking walks, and tending her plants.

She is survived by her husband, Ray; two sons, Ray of Waverly and Dennis of Cresco; one daughter, Diane of North Liberty; five grandchildren; three sisters, Vera Bauer, Mildred Vobr and Janet Peters, all of Cresco; and one brother, Arnold Blaser of Cresco.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Marjorie Bauer and one brother, Marvin Blaser.

Harriet Walsh

A Mass was held for Harriet Walsh at the Assumption Church in Cresco, with burial at Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Dahl Funeral Chapels handled the arrangements.

Harriet, 103, died Monday, April 17, 2000 at Billings Montana.

Harriet C. Walsh was born January 28, 1897 in Cresco, the daughter of Jay and Albertina Van Slyke. After graduating from Cresco High School in 1915, she taught in country schools for five years.

On June 10, 1920 she married Lawrence J. Walsh. They remained in Cresco following their marriage and raised four children. When Lawrence died in 1962, Harriet moved to Billings, MT to live with her daughter, Kay Stenerson and her family.

Harriet was one of the very few surviving daughters whose father fought in the Civil War. Her father served with the 157th New York Infantry.

Harriet is survived by one son: Lawrence of San Diego, CA; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three daughters: Patricia King, Gloria Clark and Kay Stenerson; her parents; and one brother, Jack.

Fannie Tibbals

Funeral services for Fannie Tibbals of Lime Springs were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 24 at United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Fannie, 92, died Wednesday, April 20, 2000 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Fannie Tibbals was born September 25, 1907 in Howard County, the daughter of Albert and Emma Stockdale.

On October 17, 1925 she married Ernest Tibbals. They farmed until retiring to Lime Springs.

Survivors include five daughters: Darline Boehmer of New Concord, KY, Maxine Peter of St. Charles, MN, Georgia Hebrink of Harmony, MN, Iva Zirbel of Rochester, MN, and Marie Krueger of Chester; two sons: Alton and Rex both of Lime Springs; 22 grandchildren; and several great and great-great-grandchildren.

Fannie was preceded in death by her husband Ernest in 1993; one great great grandchild; four brothers, and two sisters.

Frank Vlk

Funeral services for Frank Vlk were held at 12:00 noon Tuesday, April 25 at the St. Joseph’s Worship Center in Cresco. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery. Conway Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Frank, 85, died Saturday, April 22, 2000 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco.

Frank Adolph Vlk was born in Bejou, MN, on March 3, 1915 the son of John and Josephine (Strnad) Vlk. He attended school in Bejou. He helped his parents with farm chores. He moved to the Protivin and Cresco area with his parents and worked as a farm laborer. Frank entered the Evans Memorial Home January 19, 1998.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Protivin Council. Frank enjoyed playing jokes on family and friends and playing cards.

He is survived by two sisters, Agnes Shileny of Cresco and Carrie Jirik of Mahnomen, Mn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Henry, Joseph and John: and one sister, Mary Vlk.

Cyril Reicks

Funeral services for Cyril Reicks of Alta Vista were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 27 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Alta Vista. The Rev. Roger R. Rethamel and Msgr. Leander Reicks officiated. Interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista. Cyril’s children placed the pall. Pall bearers were: Tracy Reicks, Jon Paulus, Ryan Paulus, Darel Reicks, John O’Donnell, and Roger Dieterich. The Knights of Columbus Council #4144 of Elma served as honorary pall bearers. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Cyril, 71, died Saturday, April 22, 2000 at Finley Hospital in Dubuque as a result of injuries he received in an automobile accident.

Cyril James Reicks was born December 27, 1928 near St. Lucas, the son of James and Eleanor (Bush) Reicks. He graduated from St. Lukes Catholic School in St. Lucas. After his schooling he farmed on the family farm.

On April 10, 1956 he married Florence O’Donnell at St. Bernard’s Church in Alta Vista. After their marriage the couple resided on a farm near St. Lucas, where they had an infant son, Stephen who died at the age of nine months. After Stephen’s death the couple moved to a farm near Alta Vista where they were currently residing. He retired from farming in 1993. He was also a part time real estate agent. After his retirement the couple spent time traveling.

He was a member of the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and was very active in the community.

He was an avid card player and loved sports.

Cyril is survived by his wife, Florence of Alta Vista; three daughters: Mary Jo Rooney of Dubuque, Judy Paulus of Elma, and Janice Westervelt of Dubuque; three sons: Kevin of Forest City, Lorin of Cedar Rapids, and Jason of Rockford; 15 grandchildren; three brothers: Leo of Lawler, Denis H. of Cresco, and Loras of Waucoma; and five sisters: Arlene Bodensteiner of St. Lucas, Edith Shindelar of Ft. Atkinson, Anita Imoehl of Postville, Monica Brooks of Cedar Rapids, and Verna Chacey also of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Stephen, his parents, and one brother, Roger.

Marie Erickson

Funeral services for Marie “Dolly” Erickson were held at 12:00 noon Wednesday, April 26 at Assumption Worship Center in Cresco. The Rev. Michael L. Tauke officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pall bearers were grandchildren: Jodi Valentine, Jill Erickson, Sue Mone, Tom Erickson, Corey Stender, Patrick Stender, Michelle Gaul, and Todd Erickson. Marie, 88, died Sunday, April 23, 2000 at the Cresco Care Center.

Marie V. Erickson was born February 28, 1912, the daughter of Miles and Rose (Elliott) Henry. She graduated from Assumption High School.

On October 28, 1939 she married Russell Erickson in Cresco. Marie was a loving mother and farm wife.

She was a member of the Assumption Catholic Church, and the Assumption Altar and Rosary Society. She loved to play cards, and work crossword puzzles.

Marie is survived by two sons: Loel of Rochester, MN, and Wayne of Cresco; one daughter: Shirley Stender of Rochester, MN; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister: Isabelle Chevalier of Johnston.

Marie was preceded in death by one great grandson; her parents; five brothers: Miles, Lawrence, Richard, Thomas, and John W. Henry; and two sisters: Ellen Gossman.

Marie Erickson

Funeral services for Marie “Dolly” Erickson will be held today, Wednesday, April 26 at 12:00 noon at the Assumption Worship Center in Cresco. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Conway Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Marie, 88, died Sunday, April 23, 2000 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

She is survived by two sons, Loel of Rochester, MN, and Wayne Erickson of Cresco; one daughter, Shirley of Rochester,; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Isabelle Chevalier of Johnston.

Eileen Botelho

Funeral services for Eileen Botelho of rural Harmony, MN will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, April 26, at Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony. The Rev. Steve Peterson will officiate. Interment will be in State Line Cemetery. Lindstrom Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Eileen, 90, died Sunday, April 23, 2000 at the Cresco Care Center following a long illness.

Eileen Ryan Botelho was born August 19, 1909 in rural Riceville, the daughter of Walter and Winifred (Cashman) Ryan. Following graduation from Cresco High School she taught for several years in rural schools near Cresco. She then entered St. Francis School of Nursing in LaCrosse, WI graduating as a registered nurse in 1944. She practiced nursing at St. Francis Hospital in LaCrosse, Veterans Hospital in Chicago, and County Hospital in San Jose, CA. She served one year in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during WWII.

On February 19, 1947 she married Joseph Botelho in San Jose, CA. They made their home there until Joseph’s death in 1962. Eileen then returned to the Harmony area.

Eileen is survived by one sister: Mercedes Ryan of Mason City; and two brothers: Roger and William both of Harmony.

Eileen was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three brothers: Vincent, Donald, and Martin; and four sisters: Catherine Hill, Lavonne Addison, Elizabeth Ryan and Alice Lavonne Ryan.

Dorothy Henry

Funeral services for Dorothy Henry were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 27 at St. Joseph’s Worship Center in Cresco. The Rev. Donald Hawes officiated and Rev. Michael L. Tauke concelebrated. Interment was in St. Bridget’s Cemetery in Bluffton. Pall bearers were grandchildren: David, Daniel, John, Jim, Susan and Angela Henry, and Julie Brenno. Honorary bearers were: Pat Donovan, Jerome Kingsley, Charles Wilhelm, Paul Gossman, Eugene Daley, and Lester McCauley. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Dorothy, 88, died Monday, April 24, 2000 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Dorothy Genevieve Henry was born November 16, 1911 in Bluffton Township, Winneshiek County, the daughter of John and Sarah McCauley. She attended school at Rudolphinum in Protivin.

In August of 1929 she married James P. Henry at St. Bridget’s in Bluffton.

Dorothy was a member of St. Agnes Rosary Society of Plymouth Rock, the Farm Bureau, the Catholic Daughters of America and ACCW, where she held several offices.

She enjoyed traveling, cooking, and baking.

Dorothy is survived by three sons: Earl of Cresco, Duane of Decorah, and Jerome of Canton, MN; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband James on February 12, 1962; one son, Eldon in infancy; her parents; and one sister: Pearl Gossman.

Evelyn Macha

Funeral services for Evelyn Macha of Nora Springs, formerly of New Hampton were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 2 at the Jerico Lutheran Church, rural New Hampton. The Rev. Kent Dethlefsen officiated. Interment was in Jerico Lutheran Church Cemetery. Pall bearers were: Neil, Daniel, Wayne and Gene Shaffer, and Reece and Victor Ball. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Evelyn, 85, died Saturday, April 29, 2000 at the Nora Springs Care Center of cancer.

Evelyn Gladys Macha was born June 20, 1914 near Jerico, the daughter of Jens and Ellen (Samson) Anderson. She attended the rural school and was baptized and confirmed at the Jerico Lutheran Church.

On October 13, 1937 she married Harry Macha at the Little Brown Church near Nashua. Following their marriage, they made their home in Nora Springs. In recent years Evelyn made her home at Maple View Manor until failing health necessitated her to move to the Care Center in Nora Springs on January 20 of this year.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Harry in 1985; an infant son Gary Edward; her parents; three brothers: Ole J., Elmer and Jens Anderson; and six sisters: Sara Twedt, Anna Anderson, Sena Mosby, Agnes Miller, Clara Anderson, and Henrietta Thompson.
