Dwight Carroll

Dwight Carroll, 49, of Shell Rock, died on Thursday, September 29, 2011, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinic in Iowa City, from complication of an apparent stroke.

Funeral Services were held 1:30 p.m., Monday, October 3, at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville with Pastor Lynne Busch officiating. Harriet Forry accompanied those in attendance singing “On Eagles Wings” and “How Great Thou Art.” Stephen Hugh Donavon, Francis Carroll, Frank Carroll, Rodney Donavon, Bradley Donavon, Judi Hess, and Eileen Carroll served as casket bearers. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Dwight Carroll was born on January 13, 1962, the son of Gerald Frank and Lyla Lucille (McKee) Carroll, at the Waverly Municipal Hospital in Waverly. He was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville.

Dwight received his education from the Clarksville Community Schools where he graduated from high school in 1981. He continued his education at Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls where he graduated with and associates degree in business and marketing in 1983.

Dwight made his home in Waverly following school, where he had been employed for 23 year at Whitaker Foods in Waterloo until it closed in December 2009. Dwight recently moved to Shell Rock, and was currently working at Hy-Vee in Waverly. Dwight was an associate member of the Waverly V.F.W. Post # 2208. He enjoyed trout fishing, watching Hawkeye football, and in the past he liked to go pheasant hunting.

Dwight is survived by his: mother, Lyla Carroll, of Clarksville; five brothers: Stephen Hugh (Nancy) Donavon, of Clarksville; Michael (Linda) Donavon, of Coupeville, Wash.; Frank Carroll, of Clarksville; Francis Carroll, of Clarksville; and Ben Carroll, of Golden, Colo.; two sisters: Judi Hess (special friend Lee Anderson), of Traer; and Eileen Carroll, of Fort Dodge; six nieces and nephews; and five great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Gerald in 1975.


Quentin Edward Hildebrand

Quentin Edward Hildebrand, 85, of Greene, died on Saturday, October 8, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Quentin Edward Hildebrand, 85, of Greene were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene, with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene with Military Honors conducted by Tack- Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Lavon Louise Wedeking

Lavon Louise Wedeking, 85, of Clarksville, was born February 7, 1926, on a farm five miles north and one-quarter mile east of Clarksville. She was the daughter of Henry and Lena (Klunder) Stoxen.

She was baptized into the Christian faith on March 14, 1926, and was later confirmed also at First United Church of Christ, Pleasant Valley, rural Clarksville. She received her education from a rural country school near her home.

In later years the family joined the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. On March 19, 1947, Lavon was united in marriage with Vern Wedeking at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville.

They farmed on the home place where she was born. Lavon was a loving wife, mother of two sons, and a hard working farm wife. In February of 1985 they retired from farming and one year later they moved into Clarksville where they had purchased a home.

Lavon was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ. She enjoyed gardening, raising beautiful fl owers and going shopping. Lavon also liked cooking and baking and she especially made wonderful cakes. She always looked forward to spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lavon died on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, at Steve and Gloria’s home in rural Clarksville, of natural causes.

Lavon is survived by her husband of 64 years, Vern Wedeking, of Clarksville; two sons, Steve (Gloria) Wedeking, of Clarksville; and Michael (Dana) Wedeking, of Waverly; five grandchildren: Jason (Lisa) Wedeking, Amy Jo (Brian Northland) Wedeking, Matthew (Samantha Ubben) Wedeking, Teri (Whitley) Burrier, and David (Brittany Manning) Wedeking; fi ve great-grandchildren: Sam Loverin, Jasmine Wedeking, Kaden Wedeking, Cole Brunner, and Ethan Grimm.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Edwin, in infancy.

Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 10, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville, with Pastor Lynne Busch and Rev. Bill Carpenter, of Cedar Valley Hospice, officiating the services. Casket-bearers were Jason Wedeking, Amy Jo Wedeking, Matthew Wedeking, Teri Burrier, David Wedeking and Whitley Burrier. Interment was held at Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville. Memorials may be directed to Immanuel United Church of Christ or Cedar Valley Hospice.

Lee Clair Chester

Lee Clair Chester, 86, of Plainfield, died on Sunday, October 2, 2011, at his home.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 7, at the First Baptist Church in Plainfield with Pastor Shawn Greer officiating. Interment was in Willow Lawn Cemetery with Lisa Chester, Jim McCurdy, Andi McCurdi-Savago, Katie Savago, Jackie Brazzil, Robyn Brazzil and Stephanie Frana serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Kendyl Woods, Cooper McCurdy-Savago, Elizabeth McCurdy-Savago, Jedrek Muehling and Charlee McCurdy. Military honors were conducted by the Waverly Amvets.

Lee Clair Chester was born November 9, 1924, in Plainfield, the only child of Ralph and Nila (Smith) Chester. He received his education in a rural country school and graduated from the Plainfi eld High School in 1943.

Lee served his country during WWII as a Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Corp. He was honorably discharged on December 13, 1946.

He was united in marriage to Lorraine Lynes on June 11, 1945, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly. To this union fi ve children were born. The couple farmed after Lee returned from WWII until 1969. He then turned a hobby into a business whereby he became a photographer known in the area as Foto-Farmer.

Lee was one of the first in the area to be involved in running some of the early computers.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Lorraine, of Plainfield; two daughters: Kathy Weber (Bob Brazzil), of Naperville, Ill.; Bobbi Chester, of Manchester; one son: Reed (Linda) Chester, of Grayslake, Ill.; son-in-law, Vincent Frana, of Cadiz, Kent.; brother-in- law, Wally Lynes, of Plainfield; sister-in-law, Opal Lynes, of Plainfield; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and dear family friend, Norma Nolting, of New Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Diana Frana and Renee Chester; and a brother-in-law, Bill Lynes.


Carma L. Hemmen

Carma L. Hemmen, 81, of Dumont, died on Monday, October 3, 2011, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

Private services will be held at a later date with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home of Dumont in charge of arrangements.

Carma L. (Boots) Hemmen was born January 12, 1930, to Ray and Edna (Stafford) Boots in Dumont. She attended and graduated from Dumont High School in 1947 and married Harm Hemmen Jr. on March 8, 1951. After graduating from high school,

Carma worked at the Hampton Hospital and later at Dr. Enna’s office in Dumont.

Carma and her husband Harm owned and operated Hemmen’s Mobile gas station for 18 years. She graduated from LaJames Beauty School and opened her own shop, Carma’s Boutique, which she operated until her retirement in 1996.

She was a member of the Dumont American Legion Auxiliary and New Hope United Methodist Church of Dumont. Carma enjoyed spending time with family and friends and playing cards.

She is survived by her daughter, Christie, and her husband, Chris Brown, of Dumont; a step-daughter, Jo Lamar, of Iowa Falls; two sistersin- law, Frances Boots and Harriet Hemmen; four step-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a brother, Vincent (Bud) Boots; sisters: Marlys Van Horn, Marian Boots, and a stillborn sister, Connie.
Mitchell Beninga

Mitchell Beninga, 53, of Greene, died on Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at the Cedar Falls Health Care Center in Cedar Falls after a long battle with diabetes.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 14, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mitchell Beninga Memorial Fund in care of Lincoln Savings Bank, Greene, in support of North Butler athletic programs. >

Mitchell Beninga was born in Charles City, on November 7, 1957, to Lawrence P. and Joyce Ann (Temple) Beninga. Mitch’s parents were divorced and Joyce Ann raised Mitchell in Greene, where he attended Greene public schools and became pen pals with a Vietnam soldier, Harold “Pat” Erkel.

Upon returning from Vietnam, Harold met Mitchell in person and later married Joyce Ann in 1968, and they moved to Le Claire. He was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pleasant Valley. He attended Pleasant Valley High School, Clinton Community College, and audited Journalism classes at The University of Iowa where he developed his writing talent.

On June 26, 1976, he was united in marriage to Linda Holmes. Mitchell and his family moved back to Greene in 1986, where he worked for Greene Ag Services for 17 years and for over 20 years for the Greene Recorder and The Butler County Tribune Journal as Sports Editor and columnist.

Mitch received many awards from the Iowa Newspaper Association for his writing excellence. He was named Best Sports Columnist in 2006, and also won awards for best Sports Story and Photography. He loved sports, especially the Green Bay Packers and North Butler athletics.

Mitchell is survived by his wife, Linda, of Waverly; two children: Michael (Mindy) Beninga, of Waverly; and Jennifer (Matt) Averhoff, of Shell Rock; three grandchildren: Lyla Rose Beninga, and Jadelyn Kate and Ella Marie Averhoff of Shell Rock; his parents, Harold and Joyce Ann Erkel, of Iowa City; brother, Kyle M. (Sherri) Beninga; and a niece, Aissa Elizabeth Anne Erkel, of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and father, Lawrence Beninga.
Lillian Ann Wiegmann

Lillian Ann Wiegmann, 78, of Reinbeck, died on October 9, 2011 at Parkview Manor Nursing Home in Reinbeck with members of her family present.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 15, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Allison. Family greeted friends for an hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Janice Rose Chapman

Janice Rose Chapman, 72, of Greene, died on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 22, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene. Memorials may be directed to the family at 13743 110th St., Greene, Iowa 50636.

Bertha Jane (Freeseman) Allison

Bertha Jane (Freeseman) Allison, 94, of Allison, died on Wednesday, October 19, at the Cedar Falls Health Care Center in Cedar Falls.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 22, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Allison with Pastor Sue Mutschler officiating. Burial was in the Allison Cemetery.

The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home of Allison was in charge of arrangements. Bertha Allison was born December 16, 1916, in Grundy County, to Louis and Alice (Croot) Freeseman. Bertha attended rural Grundy County country schools.

She married Emil Allison on July 20, 1940, in Oelwein. Bertha was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Bertha is survived by her son, Charles (Lynn) Allison, of Allison; daughter, Emily (Don) Pearce, of Cedar Falls; daughter, Darnell (Gary) Fairbanks, of Mason City; daughter, Rhonda Schilling (Gary Sullivan), of Waterloo; sister, Lena Voogd, of Ackley; sister, Francis Allison, of Aplington; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Emil, died March 12, 1957; son, Stanley, on October 1, 2007; a great-grandson; five brothers: Harold, William, Fred, Clarence, and Melvin; four sisters: Anna Kreimeyer, Alice Smeins, Catherine Larsen, and Susanna Harken.
Gerdine “Dena” Gerdes Frieling

Gerdine “Dena” Gerdes Frieling, 92, of Parkersburg, died on Saturday, October 22, 2011, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26, at Faith Lutheran Church in Parkersburg with Pastor Daniel Finn officiating. Bernita Nicklaus was organist and accompanied those in attendance singing “Jesus Lead Thou On” and “Rock of Ages.” Suzie Wubbena sang “Abide with Me.” Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, with Mark Saathoff, Tom Wubbena, Brian Stille, Ron Carlson, Jason Davis and Jason Wintrode serving as casket bearers. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Gerdine Frieling was born the third of seven children to George G. and Marie (Wilts) Seehusen, near Aurich, Germany on July 9, 1919. She came to America with her parents in 1925. They farmed in the Grundy and Butler county area. She received her education at a rural school near Butler Center.

Dena was confirmed at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church located near Allison. On February 2, 1941, Dena was united in marriage with Herman Frieling at the parsonage of the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. They farmed in Butler County near Parkersburg. Dena was a loving wife, mother and hard working farm wife. She worked alongside Herman helping with the daily milking and shocking the oats during harvest time. They retired and moved to Parkersburg in 1977.

Herman passed away on October 17, 1983. Dena was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, where she taught Sunday school, Bible school and sang in the church choir. She was also a member of Faith Circle. Dena always kept her hands busy with gardening, canning, sewing, knitting and crocheting. In her spare time she enjoyed reading and also enjoyed a little traveling with Herman. Some of their special trips were taken with Herman’s brother fishing and also a trip to Germany she took with her brother and sisters.

Dena is survived by three children: Marlys (Ron) Saathoff, of Allison; Gary (Joan) Frieling, of Fort Atkinson, Wisc.; and Betty (Jack) Hansen, of New Castle, Wyo.; eight grandchildren; 22 greatgrandchildren; one great greatgrandson; two brothers: George Seehusen, Jr. and Richard (Rose) Seehusen, both of Allison; and two sisters-in-law, Mable (George) Viet, of Grundy Center; and Francis Frieling, of Parkersburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman Frieling; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three sisters: Grace DeWitt, Kate Brinkman, and Mary Brinkman; and one brother, John Seehausen.
