Frances Stubbe

Frances Stubbe, 84, of Aplington, was born on July 29, 1927, the daughter of Bert and Tillie (Alberts) Miller on a farm east of Kesley.

She received her education from Ripley Township #4 country school near her home.

Frances Miller was united in marriage to Theodore Stubbe on September 25, 1946, in the parsonage of the Bethel Reformed Church in rural Aplington. To this union three daughters and one son were born. They lived on a farm southwest of Aplington until 1956 when they moved to Aplington and Ted started working for the Farm Service Company. In 1979 they built their present home.

Frances was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington, receiving a 50-year membership certificate in 2009. She served as a Sunday School teacher, Bible School director, youth leader, and was an officer of the Ladies APW group. She headed the bread-baking program for many years and she and Ted enjoyed activities with the church Mariners’ group.

In 1995, she was awarded a Presbyterian Women’s Honorary Life Membership. Frances was also very active in volunteer community work. She served as the Red Cross chairperson for many years as well as the head of Meals on Wheels. She and Ted worked at the AMVET bingo fundraisers on Saturday nights and Frances chaired the chili and oyster suppers. She was a tireless worker who gave her time and talents for the good of others.

Frances enjoyed working in the yard, mowing lawn and growing and tending her flowers and plants. She helped Ted at Farm Service and with his Pioneer Seed Corn business. Her favorite times were family gatherings and spending time with her grandchildren.

Frances died on Saturday, November 19, 2011, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, from natural causes.

Frances is survived by her husband, Ted; three daughters: Peggy (Dale) Rogers, of rural Janesville; Patty Uhlenhopp, of Aplington; and Pamela (Kent) Gulick, of rural Allison; a son, Paul Stubbe, of Aplington; three grandsons: Christopher (Sarah) Maifield, Jonathan Maifield, and Levi Gulick; two granddaughters: Brooke Gulick and Mackenzie Uhlenhopp; a greatgrandson, Brody Wangsness; two sisters: Mildred Ridder and Phyllis Aalderks; two brothers, John “Jack” (Joan), and Delbert (Delores) Miller, all of Aplington; and a sister-in-law, Hannah Miller of Parkersburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six sisters: Cornelia Jungling, Henrietta Mennen, Madeline Cordes, Carrie Bertram, Marion Cordes, and Bertilda Freese; and two brothers: Merle and Dick Miller.

Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 22, at First Presbyterian Church in Aplington with Pastor Michael McLane officiating. Randy Aalderks accompanied those in attendance singing “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “God Be With You ‘Til We Meet Again.” Randy sang “Welcome Home” and “Safe In The Arms of Jesus” both as vocal solos. Burial was held in Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Aplington, with James Miller, Rick Miller, Paul Jungling, Jim Ridder, Gaylen Miller, and Delbert Cordes serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers were her grandchildren: Christopher and Sarah Maifield, Levi Gulick, Jonathan Maifield, Brooke Gulick, Mackenzie Uhlenhopp, and Brody Wangsness.

Levi Robert Hall

Levi Robert Hall, 31, of Shell Rock, died on Wednesday evening, November 23, 2011, at his home in Shell Rock.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 29, at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville, with Pastor Myron E. “Pete” Hall and Pastor Lynne Busch officiating. Burial was held in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville. Memorials may be directed to the Hall family where a memorial direction will be established at a later date. Levi was born on February 21, 1980, in Waterloo, the son of Robert Ray and Tamra Sue (Litterer) Hall. Levi was baptized in 1980 at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. He attended the Waverly-Shell Rock School System, graduating in 1998.

Levi was currently working as a welder for Feldmeier Equipment in Shell Rock. In his spare time, Levi enjoyed hunting, fishing, slow pitch softball, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan. But most of all loved spending time with his family and friends.

Levi is survived by his companion, Katie Morrissey, and their three children: Aubrey, Camden, and Hayden Hall, all of Shell Rock; his son, Ethyn Beckman, of Denver; his parents, Robert and Tammy Hall, of Shell Rock; a sister, April Hall- Hoodjer, and her husband, Ted and their daughter, Gianna, of Allison; his paternal grandfather, Ray Hall, of Des Moines; his maternal grandparents, Bob and Sherry Litterer, of Clarksville; and many caring aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends.

Levi was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, DeLila Hall.
Henrietta (Henri) J. Finke

Henrietta (Henri) J. Finke, 90, of Allison, died on Monday, November 21, 2011.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday November 26, at the St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church - Vilmar, in rural Greene with the Rev. Mark Walker will officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery. The family prefers memorials be directed to St. John’s EV Lutheran Church – Vilmar. Henri was born April 3, 1921, to Anna and Arius J. Meyer of Bristow. She was a graduate of Bristow High School, and attended Central College in Pella, earning her teaching certificate. Henri taught school for three years, then married Lawrence H. Finke on June 18, 1945.

For the next 40 years, Lawrence and Henri farmed near Bristow, retiring “to town” in Allison in 1985. Henri was a devoted member of her “singing church,” St. John’s EV Lutheran Church - Vilmar, where she taught adult and children’s Sunday school and sang in the choir.

Henri filled her days doing all the things she loved: Henrietta “Henri” Finke family events, gardening, raising chickens, quilting, cross-stitch, playing the piano, travel, collecting music boxes, church history, Bristow High School alumni events and town history, and wrote a book about her farm/family life.

She is survived by two sons: Les (Diann), of Naperville, Ill.; and Doug (Diane), of Carlton, Minn.; four grandchildren: Andy (Kris) Finke, of Sheridan, Ill., April (Jon) Miller, of Naperville, Ill., Jesse Finke, of Foxboro, Mass., and Anna Finke, of New York City, N.Y.; and sister, Meta Wiegmann, of Dumont.

Henri was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, and infant son Robert, and infant granddaughter.

Johnny Henry Muller

Johnny Henry Muller, 80, of Allison, passed away December 5, 2011, at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa. He was born October 24, 1931 in Dumont, Iowa to John H. A. and Etta (Bruns) Muller.

Johnny attended Dumont schools in Dumont, Iowa. He was married August 6, 1950 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa to Viola Rewerts. Johnny worked as a farmer and an excavator. He was a member of the Dumont Reformed Church in Dumont and also was a member of the Dumont Saddle Club.

His hobbies included running chariot ponies in county fairs, Sunday buggy rides and playing cards. Johnny & Voila enjoyed wintering in Arizona and California and they also enjoyed attending auctions and flea-markets.

He is survived by his wife Viola Muller of Allison, daughter Sheryle and husband E. Lee Hutchison of Nashua, son Meryle and wife Mary Muller of Waverly, son Rodney and wife Gerda of Hampton, son Wendell and wife Susie of Clarksville, daughter Marcyne and husband Larry Fuller of Allison, nineteen grandchildren, Chad Muller of Madison, AL, Jessica Vrieze (Todd) of New Hampton, Jennifer Williamson (Lee) of Plainfield, Jenae Muller of Fayette, Julayne Muller of Oelwein, Mariah Hutchison (Paul) of Eugene, OR, Joel Hutchison (Christa) of Nashua, Aaron Hutchison (Jessica) of Prior Lake, MN, Sonia Skinner (Mike) of Hampton, Sandy Muller of Waterloo, Shane Muller of Hampton, Sarah Muller of Hampton, Jami Emery (Chad) of Walker, MN, Lance Muller of Belview, MN, Dacia Kelly (Conrad) of Park Rapids, MN, Ryan Simmons of Temecula, CA, Travis Muller of Des Moines, Eric Muller of Fort Leonardwood, MO, Felicia Fuller of Thayer, MO, thirty-one great grandchildren, brother Eilard Muller of Ackley, brother Walter and wife Harriet Muller of Clarksville, sister Tillie and husband Elwood Geiken of Ackley, sister LaVonne and husband Roland Endelman of Charles City.

Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, son Wayne and sister Esther.

Funeral services for Johnny Henry Muller were held Friday December 9, 2011 at the Dumont Reformed Church in Dumont. Burial was in the Dumont Cemetery. Pastor E. Lee Hutchinson officiated.

Robert L. (Bob) Freerks

Robert L. (Bob) Freerks, 67, of Aredale, Iowa, passed away December 5, 2011, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa.

He was born May 21, 1944, in Waverly, Iowa, to Everett and Elsie (Klunder) Freerks. Bob attended rural Butler County country schools.

He married Dee Ann Ruth DeVries on January 21, 1972, in Dumont, Iowa.

Bob worked as a farmer. He was a member of the New Hope Parish of the Aredale United Methodist Church and was a past member of the Dumont Jaycee’s. Bob’s hobbies included collecting toy tractors and he was an avid toy collector. He enjoyed woodworking, spending time with his family and grandchildren and spending time outside.

Bob also enjoyed taking care of his livestock. In his spare time Bob enjoyed going to auctions and visiting.

He is survived by his wife Dee Ann Freerks of Aredale, son Randy & wife Jessica Freerks of Aredale, son Ricky & wife Jerrilyn Freerks of Aredale, son Darren & wife Sami Freerks of Dumont, son Dalen Freerks of Le Claire, father-in-law Edwin (Rose) DeVries of Greene grandchildren Morgan Marshall, Monica Freerks, Cole Freerks, Jaden Freerks, Galen Freerks, Novalee Freerks, Connor Freerks, James Freerks and Jordan Freerks.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and mother-in-law Evelyn DeVries.

Funeral services were held Saturday December 10, 2011 at the New Hope Parish of the Aredale United Methodist Church in Aredale with burial in the Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa. Pastor Mark Young officiated the service.

John H. ‘Jack’ Taylor

Funeral services for John H. ‘Jack’ Taylor, 69, of Marble Rock, were held Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at the Walter F. Bohl Community Center, 520 College St. in Marble Rock, with Pastor John Hanna officiating.

John Harold Taylor was born on September 29, 1942, in Grinnell, Iowa to Harold and Dorothy (Polly) Taylor and passed away Friday, December 9, 2011, at the North Iowa Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Elsie (Smeins) Scarrow

Elsie (Smeins) Scarrow, 88, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away December 14, 2011, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa.

She was born February 5, 1923, in Butler County, Iowa, to Ben and Fannie (Potter) Smeins. Elsie graduated from the Dumont High School in 1941.

She was united in marriage to Lyle Scarrow on January 6, 1945, in Crystal Lake, Iowa. Elsie worked as a homemaker. She was affiliated with the Dumont Methodist Church in Dumont, Iowa.

Elsie enjoyed reading, baking pies, playing cards, but most of all she enjoyed bragging about her grandsons and great grandchildren.

Elsie is survived by her daughter Virginia (Keith) Kalkwarf of Aplington, daughter Grace (John) Rosenstock of Dumont, grandson Todd (Deb) Kalkwarf of Aplington, grandson Joel (Sarah) Kalkwarf of Parkersburg, grandson Brian (Kristen) Rosenstock of Brunswick, Ohio, great-grandchildren Cassy, Morgan, Lexis, Kendra, Brayden, and Kennedy Kalkwarf, Lyla and Aubrey Rosenstock, sister-in-law Viola Smeins of Loveland, Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her parents Ben & Fannie Smeins, husband Lyle, brothers Henry, Egbert and John Smeins and sister Grace Thieben and great-granddaughter Kaylee Kalkwarf.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 17 at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont, with Pastor Mark Young officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at the Washington Reformed Church Cemetery, rural Ackley, Iowa.

Lola J. McKee

Lola J. McKee, 86 of Clarksville, formerly of Aredale, passed away on December 17, 2011 at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City, Iowa.

She was born on December 25, 1924 in Aredale, the daughter of Emil and Evaline (Hawver) Jorges. Lola graduated from Aredale Public High School.

On July 4, 1945, she was united in marriage to Wilbur McKee at the Methodist Parsonage in Clear Lake, Iowa. Lola was a member of the Aredale United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher and a past president and secretary of the United Methodist Women. More recently, she attended Immanuel United Church of Christ and Community United Methodist Church in Clarksville.

Lola worked in retail stores, owned a café for four years, was a secretary at a lumber yard, and activity director at the Franklin General Hospital. She also volunteered at the Clarksville Elementary and Clarksville nursing home.

Lola enjoyed playing scrabble, playing cards, working on crossword puzzles, and coffee. Her door was always open to family and friends.

Lola is survived by three daughters, Coni (Howard) Schulz of Mason City, Glenda (Darrell) Kelm of Clarksville, and Rhonda (Mick) Christensen of Charles City, eight grandchildren, Terry (Sheila) Schulz of Nora Springs, RaNae (Pete) Hjelle of Mason City, Scott (Ann) Schulz of Coulter, Jeff (Lisa) Kelm of Clarksville, Kim (Tim) Grandon of Ames, Kelly (Stacey) Christensen of Waterloo, Matthew Christensen of Charles City, and Katie Anderson of Charles City, 26 great grandchildren, and twelve great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers, and five sisters.

Lola will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at the Aredale United Methodist Church in Aredale. Burial was in the West Fork Cemetery in rural Sheffield. Pastor Mark Young and Dan Fernandez officiated the service. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the family.

Ivan J. “Ike” Ackerman

Ivan J. “Ike” Ackerman, 72, of Waverly, Iowa passed away on Friday, December 16, 2011 at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.

Ike was born on January 23, 1939, the son of John E. and Alice (Ruter) Ackerman in Allison, Iowa. He was baptized on March 23, 1939 at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Allison.

He received his bachelor’s degree in political science and his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Iowa.

On August 23, 1959, he was united in marriage to Mary Janssen at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison.

He was confirmed on August 11, 1963 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

He practiced law with Engelbrecht, Ackerman & Hassman in Waverly from 1963 until his retirement in December 2009.

He served as the mayor of Waverly from 1998 – 2010, Wartburg’s Board of Regents from 1980 – 1992, Board at Waverly Light & Power, Board at the Clarksville Community Nursing Home, Commission of Wartburg Task Force on Admissions and Financial Aid.

Ike was a charter member of the Waverly Economic Development Company, past president of the Waverly Chamber of Commerce, Waverly Rotary Club, and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

He received the Waverly Chamber Citizenship Award in 1992. Ike was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and CUBS fan and helped with numerous community projects.

Survivors are his wife, Mary of Waverly; son, Nile (Jackie) Ackerman of Johnston, Iowa; daughter, Janet Peterson of Forest, Minnesota; 5 grandchildren and by a sister, Ardis (John) Bordman of Concord, Massachusetts.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Gene Ackerman.

Funeral service was held Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly with Pastor Curt Schneider officiating. Burial followed in the Harlington Cemetery.

Iva May Rogers

Iva May Rogers, age 100, of Greene and formerly of Plainfield, died Thursday, December 22, 2011, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly, Iowa.

Iva was born on January 3, 1911, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Jess and Vera (Knapp) Seeley. Her mother passed away when she was five and she was adopted by her maternal grandparents Dennie and Carrie Knapp and was raised Iva May Knapp.

Iva attended various country schools and the Clarksville High School. On April 23, 1929, Iva was united in marriage to Alfred Rogers in Austin, Minnesota. The couple lived and farmed together in the Clarksville area until 1960, when they purchased a farm north of Horton, Iowa.

They retired from farming in 1972 and the couple then moved into Plainfield where Iva worked at the Hartman Meat Locker in Plainfield. In 1989, they moved to Waverly. Due to failing health Iva moved to Nashua Assisted Living in 2006 and then to the Liebe Care Center in Greene in 2008 where she lived until her passing.

Iva was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Clarksville where she was baptized and confirmed. Her enjoyments included polka music, sewing, quilting, baking, gardening, canning, and cooking. However, what she enjoyed most was her family.

Iva’s memory is honored by her daughter, Ruth (Robert) Shaffer of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren, Randy (Nancy) Rogers, Vicki (Bob) Kleinschmidt, Steven (Sylvia) Rogers, Leroy Kellner, Diane (Jim) Oltmann, Charles Kellner, Cindy Kellner (Mason Larson), Ruth Kellner, Brian (Janis) Vorhes, and Julie Vorhes (Karl Hufnagel); thirteen great-grandchildren, Matthew Rogers, Caitlyn Rogers, Kelly (Andy) Gerrits, Amy (Zach) Kejo, Kyle Kleinschmidt, Alex (fiancé Sara) Rogers, Emily Rogers, Jimmy (Katie) Oltmann, Jamie Oltmann, Stacia Kellner, Krista Kellner, Austin Kellner, Nicholas Hufnagel; six great-greatgrandchildren, Tegan, Quinton, Amaria, Lilly, Morgan, and Mason; a niece, Eileen (Bernard) Sauers; and a nephew, Albert Hansen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, a son, Louie Rogers and his wife Burdette, a daughter, Lorraine Kellner and her husband John, a grandson, Craig Kellner, a brother, Jesse Seeley, a sister, Gladys Hansen, and a son-inlaw, Dean Vorhes.

Funeral service was held on Tuesday, December 27, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Burial followed at the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville.

Virgil Levi Stevenson

Virgil Levi Stevenson, age 97, of Cedar Falls, Iowa and formerly of Clarksville, Iowa was born the son of Ellis Byron and Nettie (Beebe) Stevenson on August 25, 1914, Jackson Township, Butler County, near Clarksville, Iowa.

He received his education and graduated from the Clarksville High School in 1933. Virgil attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City Iowa, majoring in economics. Following college he returned to the Clarksville area where he farmed south of town and raised Black Cattle. He also worked with Seeding Equipment for Pioneer and several other seed companies.

Through the years Virgil and his sister Naomi wintered out west visiting their brother in San Francisco, California. They also enjoyed taking winter trips to Roswell, New Mexico.

In 1991 he moved to Charles City, Iowa, but he often would make frequent visits to the family farm near Clarksville. He began living in Cedar Falls in 2004 with his cousin Jean Hager, who was his care giver.

Virgil became a resident of the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly in 2009. Virgil was a member of the Community United Methodist Church in Clarksville. He was baptized in 1923, at the church, and when he passed away was the oldest member of the Community United Methodist Church.

Virgil was a 50 year member of the Tyrell Masonic Lodge in Waverly, Iowa. He had a gifted talent with woodworking and especially loved working with gun stocks. He enjoyed collecting antiques and trading them as well.

He loved telling stories and sharing them with people.

Virgil died Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly, Iowa, of natural causes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Grant (Gertrude) Stevenson; and two sisters, Thelma (Vernon) Ulrich and Naomi Stevenson.

Memorial Services were held Tuesday, December 27, 2011, at Community United Methodist Church in Clarksville with Pastor Dan Fernandez officiating. Lola Clark played the organ and accompanied Travis Bouska singing “On Eagle’s Wings” and “How Great Thou Art”. Inurnment was held in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville.

Memorials may be directed to Community United Methodist Church or the Clarksville Library.
