Henry H. (Howard) Ludens

Henry H. (Howard) Ludens, 79, of 1015 1st St. NW, Hampton, Iowa, 50441 died Monday, June 27 at Franklin General Hospital from complications of congestive heart failure.

A funeral service was held Friday, July 1, at Zion Reformed Church, Sheffield, with the Rev. Arthur Zewart officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

 Memorials may be directed to the Henry H. Ludens Memorial Fund, in care of the family, with distribution of funds at a later date to the Franklin General Hospital Foundation, the Hampton Senior Center, Dollars for Scholars (Henry H. Ludens memorial scholarship), and to help fund a new sound system at Zion Reformed Church.

Roscoe R. Whipple

Roscoe R. Whipple, 64, of Ackley, Iowa, passed away July 3, 2011, in rural Ackley, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 7 at the Geneva United Methodist Church in Geneva. Burial took place in the Northlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa Falls. Pastor Harry Imlay officiated the service.

John Arthur ‘Jack’ Reid

Funeral Services for John Arthur Reid, 56, prominent Greene businessman and community leader, were held Saturday, July 2, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor John Hanna officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Public Masonic Services were conducted by Vulcan Lodge 498 A.F. & A.M. of Bristow and Corner Stone Lodge 251 A.F. & A.M. of Marble Rock.

John Arthur Reid was born August 11, 1954, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Andrew and Mariette Oline (Einen) Reid and died on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at Allen Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness he courageously fought As a child he lived in Madrid, Iowa, where he attended public schools and in August 1961, he and his family moved to Greene where his father purchased the Hamilton Funeral Home.

Jack continued his education in the Greene Public Schools and also attended Shattuck Military School in Faribault, Minnesota. He graduated from the Greene High School in 1972. Following graduation he worked at the Greene Recorder and attended NIACC.

He later moved to Cedar Rapids where he worked for a printing company and John B. Turner Mortuary. In 1974, he moved to Minneapolis where he graduated from the Dunwoody Industrial Institute in Graphic Arts and took courses at the University of Minnesota.

He then Moved to Montana where he was employed by the Yellowstone Enterprises. In November 1976, he returned to Iowa settling in Marble Rock where he was engaged as City Clerk. He later was employed by Wells Manufacturing Co. in Marble Rock.

During this time he served on the Marble Rock City Council (1979-1984), secretary-treasurer of the Marble Rock Community Fire Company, where he was instrumental in the building of the new Fire Station and the acquisition of new equipment.

He served on the League of Iowa Municipalities Small Cities Advisory Committee as well as other regional boards and commissions.

He furthered his education at NIACC graduating in 1982, and the following year graduated from the Mid America College of Funeral Service in Jeffersonville, Indiana, where he was a member of Pi Sigma Eta Honor Fraternity. He returned to Greene and joined his father in the funeral business.

On December 10, 1983, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Irene (Azbell) Thompson at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock. They made their home in Marble Rock until moving to Greene in 1985. Following the death of his father in 1988, Jack purchased Reid’s Funeral Chapel and has operated it until his death. He served on the Greene City Council (1986-1990) Past President of the Greene Development Corp, and Greene Commercial Club.

His community service has recognized him with the Governors Leadership Award, and he was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel. He was recognized in the Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals in 1993.

Jack was a student of local and regional history having published a brief history of Greene. He was a member and contributor to the Marble Rock and Greene Historical Societies. As a pastime he enjoyed collecting local postcards and other related items, as well as his passion for classic cars. He received much pleasure in the fishing trips up North with his family. Jack enjoyed his trips to Branson, and smaller road trips around the state.

Mr. Reid was baptized at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Madrid on October 3, 1954, and confirmed a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene where he was ordained an Elder on January 12, 1997. He is a member of Cornerstone Lodge 251 A.F. & A.M. of Marble Rock, Vulcan Lodge 498 A.F. & A.M. of Bristow, Research Lodge 2 A.F. & A.M. of Des Moines, Scottish Rite Lodge of Perfection, Chapter of Rose Croix, and Consistory in Cedar Rapids, Palestine Council No. 27 Royal and Select Masters, Trowel Chapter No. 49 Royal Arch Masons, Apollo Commandery No. 26 Knights Templar, Noble of the Mystic Shrine- El Kahir Temple Cedar Rapids, Court No. 139 Royal Order of Jesters, Franklin Chapter O.E.S.,Order of DeMolay, Loyal Order of the Moose 1328 of Mason City, Cedar Valley Legion of the Moose, Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, Marble Rock Lions Club, Marble Rock Community Improvement Assn., Greene Volunteer Fire Dept., Greene Community Chorus, Butler County Pheasants Forever and a former member of the Butler County Agricultural Extension Council.

He was instrumental in starting the Patriots Day 4th of July Celebration and served as its chairman for many years. He was a member of the Iowa Funeral Directors Assn. and served on its Board of Governors and a member of the National Funeral Directors Assn. He received the Award of Excellence in Funeral Service from the state association.

Survivors include his loving wife Marilyn of Greene; one son Kelly James (Shirley) Thompson, Waterloo; two daughters: Heidi Lynn(Matthew) Buddenberg of Decorah, Kathryn Anne (Tyler) Eliason, Mason City; his grandchildren: Alanna and Kyle Thompson, Emma and Jace Buddenberg, Ander Eliason; his mother: Mariette Reid of Greene; a sister: Elizabeth (Sam) Lazio, Davenport; two nephews: Joseph and Mark Lazio, Chicago, IL; one brother-in-law Norman (Teresa) Azbell, Mason, OH; his dedicated staff and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father Andrew Reid and his aunt Elizabeth Reid Peterson. Those planning an expression of sympathy may be direct memorials to the Butler County Pheasants Forever Youth Hunt or the John Arthur Reid Scholarship Fund. Services were conducted by Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. Greene.


Mae C. Murphy

Mae C. Murphy, 94, of Hampton, Iowa, passed away July 9, 2011, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton, Iowa. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 12, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hampton.

Burial was in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev. John Byrne officiated the service. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hampton Senior Citizens Center or the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hampton.

Alice Buss

Alice Buss, 94, of Allison, Iowa, passed away July 2, 2011, at the Franklin General Hospital, in Hampton, Iowa.

She was born August 13, 1916, in rural Allison, Iowa, to Emmo and Gesiena (Mein) Janssen. Alice attended country schools.

She was married on January 27, 1945, in Parkersburg, Iowa to John Buss. Alice was a member of the Allison United Church of Christ in Allison, Iowa.
She worked in a variety store, café, grocery store and the Allison Care Center. Alice enjoyed gardening, baking and flowers. She also enjoyed visiting with friends and family.

Alice is survived by her daughters; Helen and husband Ronald Fleshner of Dumont, Joan and husband Tom Homer of Dumont, six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and five step great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers; George, Bert, Alice Buss Hilko, Emmo, Pete and Joe, four sisters; Lena, Hilda, Sena and Ann and one step grandson.

Funeral Services were held Thursday, July 7, 2011 at the Allison United Church of Christ in Allison, Iowa. Burial will took place at the Allison Cemetery. Pastor Ralph Wedeking will be officiated.

 Sandra Kay Fellmer

Sandra Kay Fellmer, 71, of Hampton, Iowa, passed away July 11, 2011, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held Friday, July 15, at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton. Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton. Inurnment will take place in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in rural Hampton. Rev. Karl Bollhagen and Vicar Roy Berquist will officiate the service.

Lila Harms

Lila F. Harms, 81, of Hampton, died on Monday, July 11, 2011, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 16, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton with Rev. Linda Myren officiating. Burial was in the Alexander Cemetery.

Dolores Schear

Dolores E. Schear, 84, of Hampton, died on Thursday, July 14, 2011, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton. Funeral services were held Monday, July 18, at the Hampton United Methodist Church in Hampton with the Rev. Laura L. Smith officiating. Burial was in the Hampton Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Janice Arlene Honold

Janice Arlene Honold, 71, of Hampton, died on Thursday, July 14, 2011, in Palo Alto County.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 19, at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Latimer with Rev. Marvin L. Lorenz officiating. Burial was in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Latimer. The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home of Hampton was in charge of arrangements.

Allen Rogers Boyd

Allen Rogers Boyd, 61, of Shell Rock, died on Friday, July 15, 2011, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 21, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waterloo with Pastor Jim Guyer officiating. His body has been cremated. Memorials may be directed to the family and online condolences may be left at

Allen was born on January 29, 1950, in Sumner, the son of Burr and Phyllis (Rogers) Boyd. He was raised in Sumner until he was five and then moved to Waterloo where Allen graduated from Waterloo West High School in1968. While in high school he started working at Newton’s Jewelry in Waterloo and Cedar Rapids and continued there until 1970. Allen then attended the University of Northern Iowa for a year studying philosophy and history.

1n 1972, he was hired by John Deere in Waterloo. In 1973, Allen was united in marriage to Barbara Peters in Cedar Rapids. In 1986, Allen was laid off at John Deere so he spent the next three years attending Iowa State University at the Hawkeye Campus where he graduated with a degree in civil engineering in 1988. While in college he apprenticed with Wright County Civil Engineering. Upon graduating Allen took a job with Chamberlin’s in Waterloo where he inspected patriot missile plans for the Pentagon where he detected an error in the firing mechanism.

In 1989, Allen began working for Weisman Manufacturing doing computer aided design. Allen was called back to John Deere in 1990, where he ran the CNC Machine making parts for transmissions until he retired in 2005.

Allen enjoyed working on his 48 and 49 Willey Jeeps, his Oliver tractor, fishing, camping, back packing, playing horse shoes, playing his guitar, where he played on KUNI radio and the Neighbors Band, however, what Allen enjoyed the most was spending time with his children.

Allen was a past member of Unity Presbyterian Church rural Butler County, the CJ2A Page, and Coster Jeep Club.

Allen’s memory is honored by his wife, Barbara, of Shell Rock; three children: Emily Ray Boyd, of Longmont, Colo.; Benjamin Peters Boyd, of Traer; and Timothy John (Yancy) Boyd, of Austin, Tex.; a granddaughter, Hailey Rey Boyd, of Austin, Tex.; a brother, John Mark (Sara) Boyd, of Ankeny; four sisters: Linda Boyd (Colonel Moses) Johnson, of Canyon Lake, Tex.; Diane Boyd Stensrud, of Davenport; Nancy Boyd (Jose Maria) Bove, of Barcelona, Spain; and Susan Boyd (Steve) Dodson of Big Water, Utah; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.


Alve B. Kirby


Alve B. Kirby, 93, of Shell Rock, formerly of Plainfield, died on Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at the Waverly Health Center. Funeral services were held Friday, July 22, at Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua with Pastor Beth Olson officiating. Musical selections included “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” and “Precious Lord Take My Hand.” Interment was in Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield with Scott Crump, Robert Pepin, Kyle Mehmen, Stan Mehmen, Mervin Sires, Michael Sires, and Leland Busching serving as pallbearers. The Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home of Nashua was in charge of arrangements.

Alve Bennett Kirby was born May 5, 1918, the son of Wilfred and Opal (Reynolds) Kirby in Stratton, Neb. His father worked as a farmhand, and the family moved wherever there was work to be done. They settled in Mason City where Alve received the majority of his education.

On February 9, 1941, he was united in marriage to Jeanette Busching at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Clarksville. To this union, two children were born. The couple farmed north of Plainfield for a number of years, then moved to Oelwein where they lived and worked until 1967.

Alve was an owner-operator of semi tractors and made many trips between the ditches across our country’s highways. They then returned to the area where they lived on the farm in rural Plainfield. Family and friends alike enjoyed all the napkin holders, end tables, and other woodworking projects that Alve would build for them. He was very meticulous about his work, especially when it came to the quilts that he created along with his wife. He made sure his family and friends would never be cold as they were all recipients of his quilting projects.

Survivors include two daughters: Marcele (Roy) Sires, of Waverly; and Marjorie Pepin, of Center Point; four grandchildren: Robert (Kimberly) Pepin, of Stuart; Kimberlee Crump, of Cedar Rapids; Andrew (Carissa) Crump, of Independence; and Scott (Ann) Crump, of Valley City, N.D.; a brother, Robert Kirby, of Oceanside, California.; five great-grandchildren; three nephews; and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jeanette, in 2003; and two sisters: Dona Whiteside and Theone Kirby.
