Betty Jane Johnson

Betty Jane Johnson, age 82, of Allison, formerly of Hampton, was born October 23, 1928, in Port Huron, Michigan, the daughter of Francis and Clara (Garbes) Popplewell. Betty graduated from Clarksville High School. She later attended Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls earning her Teaching Certificate.

She was united in marriage to Lyle Buchholz. To this union five children were born. The couple later divorced. Betty married Donald Johnson on October 7, 1995, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home in Clarksville for a few years and then moved to Hampton.

Betty enjoyed gardening, scuba diving, reading, swimming and being outdoors. She traveled to many parts of the world during her lifetime. Betty also enjoyed attending theatrical performances and musicals. On December 19, 2010, Betty was involved in an automobile accident that left her quadriplegic. Following her stay at the hospital, Betty then became a resident of Rehabilitation Center of Allison.

Betty died Sunday, May 22, 2011, at Rehabilitation Center of Allison, from natural causes.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Joseph Popplewell; one granddaughter, Rain Buchholz.

Betty is survived by her husband Donald of Allison, Iowa; four sons, Joe (Jane) Buchholz of Volcano, Hawaii, Rick Buchholz of Des Moines, Iowa, Tim (Cheri) Buchholz of Payson, Arizona, and Jeff (Wang) Buchholz, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; one daughter, Brenda (Allen) Wilcox of Kamuela, Hawaii; numerous stepchildren, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Geraldine “Jerry” Townsend

Geraldine “Jerry” Townsend, age 90, of Plainfield, died Thursday, June 2, 2011, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Jerry was born on August 4, 1920, in Oelwein, Iowa, the daughter of John and Grace (Goldsberry) Trower.

She was raised in Fairbank, Aurora, and Bremer, Iowa, graduating from the Waverly High School In 1938, with her normal training certificate in teaching. Jerry then taught country school at the Douglas and Fremont Township Schools near Plainfield.

On July 17, 1941, Jerry was united in marriage to William Townsend in Lancaster, Missouri. She then spent her time raising and supporting her children, helping on the farm, and occasionally substitute taught at Bremwood in Waverly.

Jerry was a member of the United Methodist Church in Plainfield, PTA, and Women Of The Moose in Charles City. She enjoyed cooking, baking, knitting, making quilts for all her grandchildren, crossword puzzles, dancing, fishing, talking on the CB radio, where her handle was Jelly Bean, and traveling with Bill in their motor home.
 
Jerry’s memory is honored by her husband Bill of Plainfield, four children, Alan (Marilyn) Townsend of Basehor, Kansas, Linda Hartema of Bloomington, Illinois, Marj (Cecil) Krull of Clarksville, and Rita (Gerald Pierson) Townsend of Des Moines, eight grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, Geraldine “Jerry” Townsend one great-great-granddaughter, and a brother, Warren Turner of Edgewater, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Burnett Trower, and a grandson, Aaron Townsend.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at the Plainfield United Methodist Church with Pastor Dennis Burns officiating. Burial was in the Willow Lawn Cemetery in Plainfield.

Hazel C. Schmitt

Hazel C. Schmitt, 92, of Hampton, Iowa, passed away June 10, 2011, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 14 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hampton. Burial took place in the Hampton Cemetery. Pastor David Sorenson officiated the service.

Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton was in charge of arrangements.
Harley Merle Ascher

Funeral services for Harley Merle Ascher, 83, of Clarksville, Iowa were held Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at St. John’s United Church of Christ Pleasant Hill, Nashua with Rev. Linda Myren and Rev. Bob Myren officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Nashua.

Harley Merle Ascher was born on November 28, 1927, in Wellsburg, Grundy Co., Iowa, a son of John and Martha (Harms) Ascher and died June 4, 2011, at the Floyd Co. Memorial Hospital in Charles City. He received his education in the Nashua public schools graduating from Nashua High School in 1946.

On June 6, 1948, he was united in marriage to Helen Swinton at the Methodist Church in Plainfield. They made their home and farmed near Pleasant Hill where they raised their family. He was a life-long member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, in Nashua, where he served on the church council and was a member of the Brotherhood.

Harley enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and watching TV.

Harley is survived by Helen, his loving wife of nearly 63 years; two sons: Dennis ‘Jack’ (Jeri) Ascher of Clarksville, Ronald (Netti) Ascher of Greene; six grandchildren: Lori Ascher, Lisa (Chad) Vance, Bobby (Stephanie) Ascher, Brett (Emily) Ascher, all of Greene, Brandie (Adam) Hoffman, Clarksville, and Brock Ascher, Urbandale; seven great-grandchildren: Peyton Hoffman, Brooklyn Hoffman, Zane, Briggs Ascher, Dylan Ascher, Dakota and Alexis Vance; 2 sisters: Evelyn (Eldon) Hauser, Clarksville, Myrna (Roger) Pope, Mason City.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert, 2 infants Marilyn and Gary; his parents, and grandparents.

Arrangements were entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Chapel, Greene, Iowa.
Helen AnnaMarie Stille

Helen AnnaMarie Stille, age 91, of Nashua, died Saturday, June 4, 2011, at Liebe Care Center in Greene. Helen was born February 26, 1920, in Butler County, the daughter of Frederick and Amelia (Litterer) Hauser. She attended Fremont #8 Butler County Country School.

She was united in marriage to Paul M. Stille on January 16, 1944, at St. John United Church of Christ- Pleasant Hill, rural Nashua. To this union, five children were born. They lived on their Butler County farm all their married lives. Helen was a lifelong member of Saint John United Church of Christ-Pleasant Hill and served in the Women’s Fellowship for many years.

She most loved being with family, quilting, mowing the lawn and being in the company of her many friends. She was a very special lady to all who knew her.

Helen is survived by her five children, LaVern (Carol) Stille of Davenport, IA, Donald Stille of Nashua, IA, Max (Judy) Still of Portland, OR, Daniel Stille of Nashua, Sharon (Darrel) Peterson of Kennewick, WA; two brothers, Eldon (Evelyn) Hauser of Clarksville, Paul (Joyce) Hauser of Hampton; one sister-in-law, Edna (Art) Kohls of Greene; five grandchildren, Ben (Lori) of Boca Raton, FL, Shane (Chama) of Altoona, IA, Paul (Karen) of Glenview, IL, Angela (Jon) of Hamden, CT, Michael (Jessica) of Chandler, AZ; one great grandson, Bryce.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul on February 16, 2001; two brothers, Leonard Hauser, Theophil Hauser; and one sister, Luella Stirm.

The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the staff of the Liebe Care Center in Greene for all their loving care.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 9, 2011, at St. John United Church of Christ-Pleasant Hill in rural Nashua. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Dale Fogle

Dale Fogle, 85, of Cross Lake, MN died May 25, 2011.

He was a former coach for girls basketball, boys and girls track, football and athletic director at Allison-Bristow for 39 years from 1962-1973.

He retired in 1987 and moved to Cross Lake to their summer home.
