Eunice Faye Kalkwarf

Eunice Faye Kalkwarf, 85, of Parkersburg, died on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, of natural causes.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 28, at the Christian Reformed Church in Parkersburg with Pastor Russell Boersma offi ciating. Angie Meester was the organist and accompanied those in attendance singing “Under His Wings,” “In The Garden,” “I’ll Fly Away,” and “What A Day That Will Be.” Charlene Kramer was the vocalist and sang “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” and “Precious Lord Take My Hand.” Burial was held in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, with Daniel Oltman, David Matthias, Kevin Oltman, Michael Cole, Max Matthias, Nathan Schutt, McCoy Matthias, and Jake Lien serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers were Lisa Matthias, Sara Schutt, Jennifer Cole, and Jennifer Oltman. Memorials may be directed to the family.

 Eunice Kalkwarf was born on March 10, 1926, the daughter of George and Jennie (Haan) Jansen, on her parent’s farm, near Aplington. She attended country school by her home. On November 17, 1947, she was united in marriage to John Henry Kalkwarf at the parsonage of the Reformed Church in Aplington. The couple farmed north of Parkersburg on the family farm for 48 years. To this union three daughters, Sheila, Karen, and Michelle, were born.

Eunice was a loving wife, mother, and hard-working farm wife. She worked alongside John on the farm until 1995 when they retired. Each year she had a large garden and grew beautiful flowers. Eunice was a member of the Christian Reformed Church, in Parkersburg, where she had taught Sunday school, Bible school, and was active in the Sunshine Circle. She loved all little children.

She enjoyed listening to music, especially Country Gospel that she often sang along with. Eunice had a strong focus on making sure John ate right and his diabetes was under control. She had a special love and gift with animals and nursed some, from cats to cows back to health.

She was a wonderful cook and liked to bake pies and bread. Her greatest joy in life was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Eunice is survived by three daughters: Sheila and Leon Smoot, of Allison; Karen and John Oltman, of Cedar Falls; and Michelle and Michael Matthias, of Denver; seven grandchildren: Lisa and David Matthias, of Readlyn; Sara and Nathan Schutt, of Cedar Falls; Jennifer and Michael Cole, of Naperville, Ill.; Daniel Oltman, of Granger; Kevin and Jennifer Oltman, of Avon, Conn.; and Max Matthias and McCoy Matthias, of Denver; seven great-grandchildren: Jake Lien, Gabriel Matthias, Derek Matthias, Abigail Schutt, Luke Schutt, Jack Cole, and Ella Cole; a sister, Janice and Gaylen Kuperus, of Clarion; a brother-in-law, Harold and Dorothy Kalkwarf, of Aplington; a sister-in-law, Frances and Harold Bergman, of Urbandale; a brother-in-law, Marlyn Kramer, of Aplington; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John, on December 29, 2010; brother and sister-in-law, Jessie and Kenneth Jansen; and a sister, Lois Kramer.


Loretta Lorraine Viet

Loretta Lorraine Viet, 90, of Dumont, died on Thursday, November 3, 2011, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison.

Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 7, at the Reformed Church in Dumont. Burial were at the Dumont Cemetery.
The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Homes of Dumont was in charge of the arrangements.

Loretta Viet was born on November 21, 1920, in Rockford, to August and Trena (Bengen) Bohlen. Loretta attended schools in Floyd County. On December 3, 1940, Loretta was united in marriage to Wubbo Viet, Jr. They lived on a farm outside of Dumont until 1980 when she moved in town.

She was a cook at the Dumont Schools for several years and was a member of the Dumont Reformed Church where she taught Sunday School for many years.

Loretta enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, playing 500, and bowling. She had a passion for children and babysat for many families.

Loretta will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Loretta is survived by a daughter, Lorraine (Russ) Ubben, of Dumont; a son, Merlin (Barb) Viet, of Dumont; six grandchildren: Keith (Becky) Ubben, Doreen Viet Wessels, Veronica (Chris) Uthe, Reece (Kristie) Viet, Nickolas Viet, and Beth (Nick) Bretz; seven great-grandchildren; four greatgreat- grandchildren; three brothers: William (Darlene) Bohlen, Clarence (Virginia) Bohlen, and Herman Bohlen; a godchild, Mary Bohlen; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Darwin; a granddaughter, Sandra (Viet) Donovon; three brothers: Harley, Gordon, and August, Jr.; a sister, Elsie Werkman; three sisters-in-law; and a brother-in-law.
Preston D. White

Preston D. White, 90, of Aredale, died on Friday, November 4, 2011, at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 8, at the Aredale United Methodist Church in Aredale with Rev. Mark Young officiating. Burial was in the Dumont Cemetery.

The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home of Dumont was in charge of arrangements.

Preston White was born October 29, 1921, in rural Aredale, to Oscar and Maybell L. (Gettemy) White. Preston graduated with the class of 1939, from the Aredale High School.

He married Fonda Kathleen Hopkins on June 4, 1944, at the Methodist Church in Aredale. Preston was a farmer and an electrician.

He was a member of the Aredale United Methodist Church, National League of Postmasters Auxiliary. He served as Chairman of the Board of the Trustees for several years and State President of the Iowa Branch of the National League of the Postmasters Auxiliary, where he received a National Award for his many years of his dedicated service.

He served many years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Little Yellow School. Preston coached for the Sheffield Clay Diggers girls Little League softball team when his granddaughter played on the team.

He is survived by his wife, Fonda Kathleen White, of Aredale; daughter-in-law, Sheryl White Brindle, and her husband, Dr. Charles Brindle, of Belmond; granddaughter, Kelly, and her husband, Michael Brock, of Osage; granddaughter, Emily and her husband, Justin Barrick, of Perth, Australia; granddaughter, Stephanie Brindle, and her friend, Daniel Birmingham, of Belmond; great-grandchildren: Ashlynn, Brooklyn, and Ethan Brock; sister, Beverly Richard, of Stewartville, Minn.; sister-in-law, Betty White, of Dumont; sister-in-law, Wilma White, of Perham, Minn.; many nieces and nephews and cousins; and special friends: Darwin, Brenda, Clint, Caleb, and Austin Penning.

Preston was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Maybell; mother and father-in-law, Howard and Katie Hopkins; son, Donavan Charles; sister, Verda; brothers, Wallace, Marion, and Dalton and Joyce White; great-grandson, Spencer Ty Barrick; brother-in-law, Jack Richard; niece, Pam Aukes; nephew, Douglas White; and sister-in- law and brother-in-law, Irene and H. L. Shannon.
Ann Charlotte Reed

Ann Charlotte Reed, 83, of Dumont, died on Tuesday, November 1, 2011, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 5, at the New Hope Parish of the United Methodist Church in Dumont with Rev. Mark Young officiating. Burial was in the Dumont Cemetery.

The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home of Dumont was in charge of arrangements.

Ann Reed was born February 1, 1928, in rural Butler County, to Fred and Cena (Werkman) Kruse. Ann attended rural Butler County country school. She married Nolan Reed on July 31, 1955, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Vilmar.

She worked at the Dumont Grocery and Locker in Dumont, then worked for the Dumont Community Schools as a cook. After retirement she volunteered at the Dumont Community Schools.

Ann was a member of the New Hope Parish of the United Methodist Church in Dumont, and Dumont American Legion Auxiliary. She most enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, playing bingo and enjoyed her time with her Dumont Friends. She also enjoyed crocheting and handiwork, cake baking, and collecting angels.

Ann is survived by her daughter, Noreen, and her husband, Warren Wiegmann, of Bristow; son, Steven, and his wife, Deb Bagenstos, of La Porte City; granddaughter, Traci, and her husband, Bret Chinander, of Davenport; grandson, Cole, and his wife, Jennifer Wiegmann, of Waterloo; great-grandchildren: Teagan Joelle Chinander and Hadley Ann Wiegmann; brother, Eldo and wife Rena Kruse, of Allison; brother, Harold and his wife, Marlys Kruse, of Allison; brother, Herman, and his wife, Sharon Kruse, of Allison; sister, Ida Mae, and her husband, Richard Litterer, of Clarksville; sister-in-law, Donna Kruse, of Bristow; and sisterin- law, Jean Reed, of Dumont.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers: Emil, William, and Elmer Kruse; nephews: Steven Litterer, John Kruse, and Travis Landers.
Rita D. Oehlert

Rita D. Oehlert, 78, of Hampton, died on Thursday, November 10, 2011, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 14, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hampton. Burial was at the Hampton Cemetery following the service on Monday.

Dorothy L. Schmidt

Dorothy L. Schmidt, 89, formerly of Charles City, died on Sunday afternoon, November 13, 2011, at the 11th St. Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 16, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, senior pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Charles City. The Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt, Charles City was in charge of arrangements. Dorothy Leona was born on January 6, 1922, near Pleasant Hill, the daughter of Ernest and Clara (Whitt) Litterer. She graduated from high school.
Her working career started in restaurants at Club Iowa and others. She then engaged in business as a “Home Beautification Technician” for area families and businesses.

She worked in her huge garden and sold some of her produce and canned a portion, she raised her flowers, and made cakes for weddings, birthday’s, anniversaries, and special events. This skill she passed down to her family who has continued her traditions.

Her collection hobby included collecting rocks and driftwood on vacations. Dorothy has always been there for her church, St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. She would rather go hungry than turn a person in need away.

She was known as a diligent hard worker and loved baby-sitting her grandchildren and Dorothy Schmidt great grandchildren. Dorothy met her future husband at her place of work when he came to visit his brother. Later spending time roller skating.

She was united in marriage to Clarence W. Schmidt on August 22, 1943, at St. John Parsonage. To this union was born one daughter and three sons.

Those thankful in sharing Dorothy’s life include her four children: Darrell, and his wife, Jo, of Charles City; Ronald, and his wife, Donna, of Dumont; Carol, and her husband, Jim Burkhardt, of Allison; and Roger, of Alta Vista; three sisters: Helen Schmidt and Leona Howe, both of Charles City; and Ruby (Robert) Obermier, of Greene; 15 grandchildren, 29 greatgrandchildren, and six great-greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, on April 21, 2001; a grandson, Brian Burkhardt; and a brother, Clarence Litterer.
