Leonard Philip Pecha

Leonard Philip Pecha, 84, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away January 27,
2011, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa.


Funeral service was held Monday, January 31, at the St. Patrick’s Catholic
Church in Hampton with burial in the Dumont Cemetery.


Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont was in charge of arrangements.


George Henry Busch

George Henry Busch, age 92, of Allison Iowa, was born April 24, 1918, the son of Henry W. and Beilda (Ludeman) Busch in Bristow, Iowa. George attended school in both Bristow and Allison.

On February 25, 1940, George was united in marriage to Marie Folkerts on her parent’s farm. To this union, four children were born. They moved to their current home, where they farmed and raised registered performance Angus cattle. George was an active member of Trinity Reformed Church, Allison, where he had served as Sunday school teacher, deacon and elder. He was an Iowa Delegate to a R.C.A. Synod meeting in New York and was chairman of the building committee when the present church was built.

George was very active in 4-H and many Extension programs. He was a Farm Bureau member since 1940, where he served in several positions on the county board and was also a charter member of the IFBF Agricultural Foundation advisory funding council for 6 years. Early in his farming career, George was concerned about soil erosion and wanted to leave the land in better condition than he found it. In 1947 he helped organized the Butler County Soil Conservation District where he served as a Commissioner for 25 years.

In 1973 he was inducted as a member of the Iowa Master Farmers. In 1979 he was awarded the “Beverly McCrindle Cleaner Stream Award” by the Iowa Division of the Izaak Walton League of America. Additionally, in 1990 George was the recipient of the Distinguished Service to Iowa Agriculture Award.

George died Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly, Iowa of natural causes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marie on February 19, 2006; one grandson Russell Westendorf; son-in-law, Roger Stauffer; one sister, Margaret Hill; two brothers, Henry and Marvin; two sisters-in-law, Maureen (Henry) Busch and Josephine (Marvin) Busch.

Survivors include his three sons; Wayne (Kathleen) Busch of Ankeny; Wendell (Beverly) Busch of Cedar Falls; Maurice (Connie) Busch of Allison; his daughter Lois Stauffer of Allison; nine grandchildren, Sherri (Brian) Cramer, Michelle Busch, Debra (Randy) Reitsma, Michael Busch, Lisa (Neil) Baumhover, Eric (Nicole) Stauffer, Kim (Kevin) Schlais, Michael (Dawn) Mason, Kristen (Ryan) Fleshner; sixteen great-grandchildren; one brother: James (Marlene) Busch of Unionville, MO and one sister, Arlene (Paul) Riggert of Green Valley, AZ.

Funeral Services were held Friday, January 28, 2011, at Trinity Reformed Church in Allison with Pastor Gary Mulder officiating. Delores Hoodjer accompanied those in attendance singing “Amazing Grace” and “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.” Joel Sult and Greta Eberline sang a vocal duet of “Mansion Over The Hilltop.” Burial was held in Allison Cemetery with Brian Cramer, Randy Reitsma, Michael Busch, Neil Baumhover, Eric Stauffer, Kevin Schlais, Michael Mason and Ryan Fleshner serving as casket bearers. Memorials may be directed to “Words of Hope” of Iowa 4-H Foundation.

Fern Clark

Fern Clark, 94, of Marion, formerly of Charles City, passed away with her family by her side at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha, Sunday, January 23, 2011.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 5, 2011, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 7121 Mt. Vernon Rd. SE, Cedar Rapids. Burial will be in Osage Cemetery, Osage, at a later date.

Survivors include her children, Bonnie (Duane) Martin, Kay Rosenwinkle, Sandra (Dennis) Peterson, and Roger (Connie) Clark; 13 grandchildren; 28 greatgrandchildren; 11 great-greatgrandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Wallingford.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, three brothers, one grandson, Jerry Clark; and her husband.

Fern was born July 13, 1916 in Unionville, Iowa, the daughter of James “J.C.” and Ora (Bain) Whisler.

Fern was united in marriage to Wilson Clark on March 21, 1935, in Cresco. The couple divorced after 28 years of marriage.

She was a homemaker while raising her children and owned and operated the Clark Nursing Home in Greene, Iowa. Fern was a very dedicated servant sharing Bible truths for the past 37 years. Her family and strong faith were foremost in her life.

Marvel Nordman Arends

On February 4, 1924, on a small Butler County farm south of Clarksville, Iowa, Marvel Irene Leerhoff came into the world. She was the first born child of Seiger and Anna (Freese) Leerhoff.

A few years later, she welcomed her brother, Harland. They quickly developed a friendship that would last a lifetime. Marvel was baptized on May 18, 1924. She attended Sunday School at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville, and was confirmed on April 2, 1939. She received her education from country schoolhouse Jefferson #5, near her home in rural Clarksville.

On September 20, 1942, Marvel was united in marriage with Orville Nordman at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville. Over the years, they were blessed with four children; Jimmy, Joyce, Jenise, and Janet. Marvel and Orville spent their life together farming near the Pleasant Valley Church on the Nordman family farm. However, their time together ended all too soon when Orville passed away suddenly on March 21, 1963. But, Marvel never wavered. She went on to raise her children and continued farming on the farm.

On August 25, 1984, Marvel married Delbert Arends at St. John Lutheran Church in Charles City, Iowa. They enjoyed 12 ½ years together. Marvel retired from farming in 1994 when she moved to Clarksville. Delbert passed away on January 1, 1997. Marvel was a wonderful person who lived an amazing life. She always looked for the good in everyone and never spoke ill of anyone. She was very forgiving and never held a grudge. Marvel’s life wasn’t easy, but she never let the hardships beat her. She would milk the cows, work in the fields, build a fence, and prepare a great meal all in one day. She was a carpenter, a wall paper hanger, a gardener, a seamstress, and a farmer. She was an excellent cook and whenever someone stopped by at meal time, they were always invited in to join them. She also loved music and dancing. But, most of all, she was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who would do anything for her family. Her pride and joy was her family and a strong faith in God was her inspiration.

Marvel died on Wednesday, January 26, 2011, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, and one brother, Harland Leerhoff.

Marvel is survived by her four children all of Clarksville, Jimmy (Marilyn) Nordman; Joyce (Charles) Bochmann; Jenise (Clayton) Kampman; and Janet (Gary) Parson. She had 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and their families: Shanelle (Kevin) Harken and their children, Heather, Shane, and Cody; Shawna (Mark) Lebeck and their daughters, McKenna and McKayla; Courtney (Stephanie) Bochmann and their children, Sydney and Graham; Gentry Bochmann; Brittany Bochmann (Josh McNeer); Riley (Melinda) Bochmann; Blakely Bochmann; Matthew (Amanda) Kampman and their children, Kale and Katie; Brandon (Andrea) Kampman and their children, Levi and Paige; Lia Kampman; and Christopher Parson; one sister-in-law, Marjorie Leerhoff of Clarksville; one brother-in-law, Loren (May Ann) Nordman of Madrid, Iowa; three step-children; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Saturday, January 29, 2011, at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville, with Pastor David Nelson officiating. Organists, Lois Roose, accompanied the Congregational Hymn, “Softly And Tenderly Jesus Is Calling.” John Morris played “Amazing Grace” and “Going Home” on the bag pipes. Vocalists John Simon, Andy Aird, and Meredith Lewis along with Guitarists, Christopher Parson and Merideth Lewis performed “Just A Closer Walk With Thee” and “In The Garden.” Kara Groen sang, “Precious Lord Take My Hand.” Gary & Janet Parson sang, “Waltz Of The Angles” while guitarist Christopher Parson accompanied the duet. Interment was at Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville with Courtney Bochmann, Matthew Kampman, Brandon Kampman, Riley Bochmann, Blakely Bochmann, and Christopher Parson serving as Casketbearers. Honorary Casketbearers were Shanelle Harken, Shawna Lebeck, Gentry Bochmann, Brittany Bochmann, and Lia Kampman. Memorials may be directed to the family of Marvel.

William Hughes McCary

William Hughes McCary, 87, died January 13, 2011 at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison. He was born May 17, 1923, in Diamond, Missouri, the son of William Isaac and Jessie Hughes McCary.

On August 10, 1949, he was married to Wilma Joyce Vandiver in Columbia, Missouri, and she preceded him in death July 23, 2008. William graduated from Fairview High School, Fairview, Missouri, and served in the Army from December 1943 to November 1945. He served in France and Belgium and was in the Battle of the Bulge, was a prisoner of war and received the Purple Heart. After serving, he attended the University of Missouri where he studied drafting. After graduating he was employed at A.B. Chance Company in Centralia, Missouri, starting as a draftsman, then tool designer and working at Chance Company he operated a small farm outside of Centralia and raised cattle, soybeans, and hay. He was very mechanical and enjoyed working on vehicles, tractors, and equipment. He enjoyed going to auctions and attended all he could.

Survivors include one son, James M. McCary and wife Donna, of Allison; two grandchildren, Alyson McCary and Amanda McCary; one sister, Betty Lou Henson of Houston, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Mary Melvin of Liberty, Missouri. Private graveside services were held at Centralia Cemetery on Tuesday, January 18, with Rev. Lon Hardy, Pastor, Parkview Christian Church, Centralia, Missouri officiating.

In charge of arrangements were Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Allison and Fenton Funeral Chapel in Centralia.


Lois M. Eberline

Lois M. Eberline, 86, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away January 29, 2011, at the Dumont Wellness Center in Dumont, Iowa. She was born the daughter of Henry and Viola Miller on February 18, 1924, in Butler County, Iowa. Lois graduated from the Dumont Consolidated Schools in 1941.

She was united in marriage to Merville Eberline on March 30, 1943, and together they spent their entire married life east of Bristow, enjoying fifty-four years. Lois was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church in Allison. She and her husband were always faithful to the church and she had spent many years teaching Catechism and Sunday School classes.

Lois loved her home, family and friends. She enjoyed reading, traveling, cooking and writing poetry. Lois wrote a book entitled “Life With Doc.” She worked for the Dumont Telephone Company before her marriage and worked for the Dumont Wellness Center for seventeen years, retiring in November of 1995.

Lois is survived by her son Arlin and wife Greta Eberline of Bristow, son Alan and wife Kathy Eberline of Aredale, son Rolin and wife Julie Eberline of Bristow, daughter Merra Loy and husband Gary Krukow of Bristow, grandchildren Angela and husband Bill Konig of Nora Springs, David and wife Lisa Eberline of Bristow, Emily and husband Rod Schut of Waverly, Jason Eberline of Bristow, Matthew Eberline of Bristow, Renae and husband Josh Johnson of Allison, Paul and wife Kathrine Krukow of Cedar Falls, Jordan Eberline of Bristow, great grandchildren Travis and Jenna Konig, Morgan and Addyson Schut, Emma and Dillon Eberline, Kiya and Lincoln Johnson and three new babies due this year, sister Beulah Hearn, sister-in-law Lucille Miller and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband on January 4, 1998, and her twin brothers Donald and Dale.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 1, at the Trinity Reformed Church in Allison. Burial took place in the Oak Hill Cemetery in rural Bristow. Pastor Gary Mulder officiated the service.

Ralph William Wessels

Ralph William Wessels, age 78, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of Diedrich and Tena (Klingenborg) Wessels on June 17, 1932, on a farm north of Aplington. He attended the Aplington School through the 9th grade until the family moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa, where he graduated in 1950. During his high school years, he wrestled and competed in the state tournament.

On January 26, 1951, Ralph was united in marriage with Lois Mae Meyer at her parent’s home in Aplington. They made their home and farmed north of Aplington, until they moved to town in 1979. Ralph went to Riesch’s Auctioneer School in Mason City, Iowa, to learn how to chant.

He began working with other auctioneers, and in 1963, he began having sales on his own. In 1974 they opened and operated the Fashion Fabrics and Furniture Store and Wessels Consignment Auction House. They had regular sales on Monday nights, along with their annual Labor Day Antique Auction and machinery sales every spring and fall. They sold the auction building in 2005, but continued to have household and farm sales at the site. Ralph was an active and faithful member of the First Reformed Church in Aplington.

He had served as an Elder, a Deacon, was a Sunday school teacher for over 30 years, and a church custodian for 4 years. He was very dedicated to serving with the Gideon’s International with the Grundy County Camp, where he spoke at many local churches and schools. Ralph was a loyal Lion’s Club member for many years. In his spare time he enjoyed watching sports whenever possible. Ralph enjoyed farming and auctioning and really loved talking with people. Family was very important to him, and he loved spending as much time with them as possible.

Ralph died Saturday, January 29, 2011, at his home in Aplington, from cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one great-grandson, Aaron Dykstra; and a son-in-law, Myron Langhoff.

Ralph is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Lois Wessels of Aplington; five children, Cinda Langhoff of Sheboygan, WI, Wava (Dale) Dykstra of Mishicot, WI, Rodney (Bonnie) Wessels of Aplington, IA, Karla (Kim) Verhelst of Sheboygan, WI, and Wanda (Eric) Bruxvoort of Manson, IA; 13 grandchildren, 13 greatgrandchildren; and one sister, Ruth Schulte of Manchester, IA; one sister-in-law, Edna Kole of Sioux Falls, SD; and one brother-in-law, Donald (Millie) Meyer of Pella, IA.

Funeral Services were held Thursday, February 3, 2011 at First Reformed Church in Aplington, Iowa with Pastor Rick Vollema and Pastor Jim Lemmenes officiating. Organist, Cami Haugstad, accompanied congregational Hymn “Wonderful Grace of Jesus.” Vocalists, Rochelle Schiebout and Renee Roskamp sang “Thank You for Giving to the Lord.” Don Meyer, Mark Hubbard, and Dallas Roskamp sang “Anchored in Love Divine,” “Amazing Grace/ My Chains Are Gone,” and “God’s Way is the Best Way.” The Flower committee included Freda Harms, Verlene Oldenburger, Norma Burman, and Virginia Dean. Interment was at Pleasant View Cemetery in Aplington with Kurt Wessels, Kyle Dykstra, Mark Hubbard, Dallas Wessels, Adam Dykstra, Ryan Salm, and Tim Dykstra serving as Casketbearers.

Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington was in charge of services.

Peter William Kramer

Peter William Kramer, age 93, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born on December 1, 1917, near Aplington, Iowa, the son of Jurren and Dina (Rops) Kramer. He attended country school in rural Allison.

Pete was united in marriage to Elsena Timmer on August 25, 1941 at the Christian Reformed Church Parsonage on the Butler Center Road.

Pete began farming on the family farm in rural Clarksville. The couple made their home on several farms in Butler County before moving to the home farm west of Clarksville in 1953. In 1970 they retired and moved to their present home in
Clarksville. After retirement, Pete worked for the Clarksville Lumber Company for several years.

On January 18, 1976, Pete was baptized into Christ and was an active member of the Bristow Church of Christ. He enjoyed attending Area Fellowship meetings throughout the state and using his carpentry skills in the church.

Pete died Monday, February 7, 2011, at Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, from natural causes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Tena Behrends; one brother, John Kramer; six siblings in infancy; one son-in-law, Edward Renning; one grandson, Jerry Renning, and one greatgrandson, Sean Renning.

Pete is survived by his wife Elsena of Clarksville; three children, Diane Renning of Clarksville, Darla (Dee) Dowden of Clarksville, Gary (Mary) Kramer of Clarksville;
11 grandchildren; 18 greatgrandchildren, and 3 great-greatgrandchildren.

The Funeral Service was officiated by Pastor Delbert Beard and Pastor Glen Bandel on Thursday, February 10, at the Bristow Church of Christ in Bristow, Iowa, with Interment at the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville, Iowa.

Bill Thompson

Funeral services for Bill Thompson, 65, of Dumont were held Saturday, February 19, 2011, at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Vilmar with Pastor Mark Walker
officiating. Burial was in the South Vilmar Cemetery, Vilmar.

William Verne Thompson was born, December 15, 1945, in Charles City, Floyd Co., Iowa, a son of Verne Roy and Leota (Hearn) Thompson  and died Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

He received his education in the Greene Public Schools graduating in 1964. He continued his education at Luther College graduating in 1968. While attending Luther College, Bill was a 4 year member of the Nordic Choir under the direction of
Weston Noble. He was presented the presidency of the Nordic Choir by Don Deines on their European Tour. Bill attended Seminary in Chicago and Minneapolis.

As a young man he helped out on the family farm and drove his first tractor at the age of 4. Bill was outstanding in music, sang for lots of funerals and weddings,
and participated in speech and  plays with the community theater.

In 1974 Bill moved to Colorado where he worked for a heating and air-conditioning company. In 1984 he started The Dish Doctor, a service and installation company
for satellite TV. After 25 years as The Dish Doctor he retired in 2009.

Bill was employed as a teacher at elementary schools in Allison, Iowa and Petersburg, IL; drove Charter Bus for Jefferson Bus Lines; and worked for the Iowa Energy Policy Council.

He was united in marriage to M. Sue Svanoe in May 1968. To this union were blessed two sons: Joshua Reuben Thompson in May 1971, and Jacob William Thompson in June 1973. He was united in marriage to Jane E. Mueller of Manly on April 30, 1983.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene.

Bill was a member of the Mayflower UCC in Colorado where he sang and directed the choir and served on the church council. In 1994 Bill returned to family farming
in Iowa and became a member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Vilmar. He served on the church council and sang in the church choir.

Bill’s passions were camping and flying his Ultra Light. He started flying his Ultra Light Mini Max in 1997 logging over 1000 hours of flight time from 1997- 2009. He
loved to buzz the local farmers. He was a published aerial photographer.

Bill loved camping and motorcycling in the mountains. In 2007 Bill and his family returned to their favorite campsite near Webster Pass and rode ATV’s to the top of Red Cone.

He is survived by his wife, Jane of Dumont; two sons: Joshua Reuben (Heather) Thompson of Aurora, CO., Jacob William Thompson of Denver, CO.; one sister: Jill (Mark) Berends of Allison; one brother: Chuck (Carolyn) Thompson of Greene; three sisters-in-law: Ruth (Rod) Barnett, Margaret (Ben) Weir, Susan (Steve) Trebil; nieces and nephews: Crystal (Larry) Iverson and son Nathan; Joe Gillespie, Jesse Gillespie, Shawn (Kim) Thompson and son Caleb; Kimberly DeWitt,
Jeremy (Alissa) DeWitt, and children Mattanah and Micaiah; Michelle DeWitt; Carolyn (Patrick) Pratt and children Alissa and Samuel Pratt; Keith Krebs; Carla Wagner and sons Braden and Collin Wagner; Sonya (Corey) Carlson and daughter Maris.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his niece Dawn Marie Thompson, his sister-in-law Ann Krebs; brother-in-law Randy Gillespie and nephew Randy
Gillespie.

Marjorie Mae (Arjes) Harms

Marjorie Mae (Arjes) Harms, 75, of Allison, Iowa, passed away  February 17, 2011, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly, Iowa, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on May 5, 1935, in Butler County, Iowa, to Harm and Kate (Henrichs) Arjes. Marjorie graduated from the Allison High School. She was united in marriage to Delbert Dean Harms on April 6, 1956, at the St. James Lutheran
Church in Allison.

Marjorie enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren and taught several
grandchildren how to drive. She also enjoyed her nieces and nephews.

Marjorie had a special love for horses and in her later years she and Delbert enjoyed their team of Belgian horses. She loved Sunday drives with family, picnics and camping.

Marjorie also enjoyed collecting recipes and looking through vcookbooks, the grandchildren especially loved her breakfasts.

She is survived by her loving husband of fifty-four years, Delbert Harms of Allison; one daughter Susan (Mark) Schrage of Bristow; three sons Steven (Brenda) Harms of  Aplington, Stanley Harms of Parker, Colorado, and Jeffrey (Julie) Harms
of Allison; ten grandchildren Sarah Gersema, Justin Schrage, Ashley Buck, Nicole Shook, Kyle Harms, Lucas Harms, Hunter and Dylan Coleman-Harms, James and Haley Harms; two step grandchildren Meghin and Evan McDaniels; four great grandchildren Mya and McKenna Gersema, Gavin Schrage and Andi Shook; a couple of great grandbabies on the way; and one brother Kermit Arjes of
Parkersburg.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents Harm and Kate Arjes; four sisters Anna Dralle, Rena Arjes, Florence Boomgarden and Lavon Wiebke and three
brothers John Arjes, Harm Arjes and Harlan Arjes.

Funeral services were held at the Allison United Church of Christ, Allison, Iowa, Monday, February 21, 2011. Officiating the service was Rev. Bill Carpenter. Organist was Robin Morton. Pallbearers were Justin Schrage, Kyle Harms,
Lucas Harms, James Harms, Jason Gersema, Aaron Buck, and Justin Shook. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery, Allison, Iowa.
