Helen Anna (Ehmen) Winterberg

Helen Anna (Ehmen) Winterberg, age 86, of Aplington, Iowa, went to be with our Heavenly Father on Friday, April 22, 2011, at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Funeral Services were held Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at First Reformed Church in Aplington with Rev. Rick Vollema officiating. Burial was held in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg was in charge of arrangements.

Verda Lee Kinseth

Verda Lee Kinseth, 76, of Hampton, Iowa, formerly of Latimer, Iowa, passed away April 25, 2011, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, April 28, 2011, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer. Rev. Linda Myren will officiate the service. A private family burial will take place in the Hampton Cemetery.

Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton is in charge of arrangements.


David Lee Nieman, PhD

David Lee Nieman, PhD was born December 27, 1944, in Waverly, Iowa and passed away in Sacramento on January 15, 2011 at the age of 67.

He is survived by his loving wife Sharon Nieman, his mother Roberta Nieman of Clarksville and two brothers: Alan and Michael Nieman. David served two tours in the Army special Operations forces during the Vietnam War and upon returning earned his masters in International Management and PhD in Business Management.

 His long and successful business career included the Fluor Corporation and the Testing and Technology Corporation specializing in hazmat and environmental remediation projects. He subsequently established the D.L. Nieman Company.

 Inurnment at a later date in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, rural Clarksville.


Lester R. McInroy

Lester R. McInroy, 80, of Waverly, Iowa, died on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at the Waverly Health Center.

Lester was born on March 2, 1931, in rural New Hartford, Iowa, the son of George and Thelma (Paulsen) McInroy.

He was united in marriage to Beverly Marquand on February 14, 1961 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Lester farmed his entire life and also was a dairy farmer on a farm north of Waverly. He also worked for numerous factories while farming.

Lester is survived by two daughters; Lesley (Steve) Shipp of Greene, Iowa, Laura McInroy of Clarksville, Iowa, one granddaughter, Elissa Shipp and his brother, Ralph (Kate) McInroy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Thelma McInroy and his son, Blaine McInroy.

Burial of his cremains was held on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at the Willow Lawn Cemetery in Plainfield, Iowa with Pastor Shawn Geer officiating. According to Lester’s wishes his body has been cremated and there will be no visitation.

Rosa Leerhoff

Rosa Leerhoff, age 103, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Fred and Emma (Koschmeder) Tiedt on September 2, 1907, Maxfield Township, Bremer County, Readlyn, Iowa. She received her education from a country school Maxfield Township #3 near her home.

On February 22, 1928, Rosa was united in marriage with George E. Leerhoff at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Waverly, Iowa. They made their home and farmed southwest of Clarksville, where Rosa was active in the daily farming operations. She was a loving wife, mother and homemaker. In the spring of 1955 they retired and built a new home on an acreage south of Clarksville on Highway 188.

Rosa was a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church, Clarksville. She was active with the Sewing Circle and WELCA where she served as president, secretary and treasurer. She loved playing cards, especially 500. One of her hobbies was collecting hankies. She liked to sew and made a special quilt for everyone in her family.

Rosa also belonged to the Triple J Club and the Friendly Neighbor Club. She enjoyed spending time outdoors, gardening, raising beautiful irises, and mowing the lawn. She especially enjoyed spending time with her large family and many friends.

 Rosa died peacefully of natural causes on Friday morning, May 06, 2011, at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George on July 12, 1973; a grandson, Mark McEnany; a granddaughter, Loretta Boswell; a son-in-law, Eldon “Chris” Christensen; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Leerhoff; three brothers, Arthur, Harry and Elmer Tiedt; and two sisters, Lydia Bartels and Hattie Seekatz.

Rosa is survived by one son, Vernon Leerhoff of Allison, IA; four daughters, Florene Christensen of Clarksville, IA, Lavon (Loren) McEnany of Waverly, IA, Shirley (Virgil) Buhr of Denver, IA and Diane (Dave) Loehr of Phoenix, AZ; nine grandchildren, Joan (Bruce) Voigts, Mark (Shelley) Leerhoff, David (Sue) Leerhoff, Duane Christensen, Anita (Dean) Wiebke, Brenda (Scott) Yearling, Brian (Michelle) Buhr, Jeffrey Loehr and Jonathan Loehr; twenty great-grandchildren; nine great great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held Monday, May 9, 2011 at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville with Pastor David Nelson officiating. Organist Lois Roose accompanied Congregational Hymns “What A Friend We Have In Jesus,” “Jesus Still Leads On,” and “I Was There To Hear Your Borning Cry.” Travis Bouska sang “One Day At A Time.” Interment was at Harlington Cemetery in Waverly, Iowa, with Duane Christensen, Mark Leerhoff, David Leerhoff, Brian Buhr, Jeffrey Loehr, and Dean Wiebke serving as Casketbearers. Honorary Casketbearer was Cpt. John Loehr, currently serving in the USAF in Germany. Memorials may be directed to the family. Online condolences may be left at www.redman-schwartz.com.

Betty Ann Oldenburger

Betty Ann Oldenburger, age 83, of Waverly and formerly of Plainfield, died Saturday, May 7, 2011, at the Shell Rock Care Center in Shell Rock.

Betty was born on April 15, 1928, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Nelson and Mae (Carlson) Snyder. Betty was raised in Waterloo, baptized at the Methodist Church in Waterloo and confirmed in 1942, at Trinity American Lutheran Church in Waterloo. In 1946, she graduated from the West Waterloo High School. She then went to work for Prudential Insurance Company.

On January 30, 1949, Betty was united in marriage to Henry Oldenburger at Trinity American Lutheran Church in Waterloo by Reverend G.E. Melchert. The couple then made their home in the Plainfield area where they would farm side by side in the Plainfield, Nashua, Waverly, and Horton areas.

She was a devoted wife and mother. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but she also enjoyed cross-stitch, embroidery, reading, flowers, gardening, and the simple things nature gives you when you spend time outdoors.

Betty’s memory is honored by her three children, Deborah (Paul) Campbell of Waverly, Rebecca (Patrick) Condon of Plainfield, David (Sue) Oldenburger of Waverly, a daughter-in-law, Sandra Oldenburger of Waverly, a sister, Bonnie Johnson of El Paso, Texas, thirteen grandchildren, Amy (Greg) Dewey, Shane, Brett (Kesley), Kerry, and Emily Oldenburger, Jessica (David) Kruger, Jason Condon, Shannon (Steve) Niedert, Brian (Mandi) Oldenburger, Cheryl Karstens, Alan Oldenburger, and Jerod and Justin (Jen) Brimmer, fifteen great-grandchildren, Kayla, Kaitlyn, and Jacob Kruger, Alex and Ryne Niedert, Kiyrah Karstens, Mason Anders, Emery, Owen, Jacob, and Emrick Oldenburger, Bailey Coan, and Carter, Cole, and Cooper Brimmer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a son, Dennis Oldenburger.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 10, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly with Pastor Val Swinton officiating. Burial followed at the Harlington Cemetery in Waverly.

Duane F. Miller

Duane F. Miller, 73, of Allison, Iowa, passed away May 2, 2011, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison in Allison, Iowa.

He was born December 6, 1937, in Allison, Iowa, the son of Fred and Dena (Busma) Miller, which he lived on the family farm and farmed all of his life. Duane graduated from the Allison High School. He married Marlene Fenneman on August 15, 1959, at Pleasant Valley Church in rural Clarksville, Iowa.

Duane was a member of the Allison United Church of Christ and Cedar Valley Engine Club. He enjoyed his grandchildren and going to antique tractor shows.

Duane is survived by his wife Marlene Miller of Allison, son Rodney (Brenda) Miller of Elk Run Heights, daughter Jodee (David) Bixler of Irving, Texas, grandchildren Mark Miller, Elizabeth (Neil) Reuter and Melissa Miller, one great grandchild Mason Reuter.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ruth.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 5, 2011, at the Allison United Church of Christ in Allison, Iowa, with burial in the Allison Cemetery. Pastor Ralph Wedeking officiated the service. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Allison was in charge of arrangements.


Lawrence “Ike” Kollmann Jr.

Lawrence “Ike” Kollmann Jr., 65, of Morrison, Colorado, passed away March 5, 2011, at Bear Creek Nursing Home after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at Sunnyside Memorial Gardens, 2267 Old Highway Rd, Charles City, IA. Please join the family after the graveside services at 3:00 p.m., Heery Woods State Park South Side Lodge, 27887 – 195th Street, Clarksville, IA to celebrate the life of Ike Kollmann.


Larry George Schwab

Larry George Schwab, 71, of Allison, Iowa, died on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.

Larry was born on September 3, 1939, in rural Black Hawk County, Iowa, the son of Adam John Henry and Dorothy Nina Barbara (Miller) Schwab. He was baptized on September 24, 1939 at the Finchford Church and was confirmed on July 26, 1959 at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville. He attended school in Finchford, graduating from Finchford High School in 1957.

Larry was united in marriage to Alice Matilda Pines on April 25, 1959. He started in maintenance with Iowa Department of Transportation in 1959 and progressed to foreman and supervisor. He retired in 2001.

Larry thoroughly enjoyed raising purebred Suffolk Sheep and game birds. He really enjoyed showing the Suffolk sheep also. He enjoyed collecting toy tractors, especially Minneapolis Moline; attending garage sales and auctions with Alice.

He loved being with his children, grandchildren, and great grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Richard, Darrell and Allen.

Larry is survived by his wife, Alice of Allison; two sons, David (Tori) Schwab of New Hartford, Iowa; Dale Schwab (special friend, Lisa) of Shell Rock, Iowa; and his daughter, Deanne (Roland) Martzahn of Greene, Iowa; six grandchildren, Adam (Emily) Schwab, Alta Schwab, Dustin Schwab, Kelsey Schwab, Nathaniel Martzahn and Elisa Martzahn; one great grandchild, Dakota Martzahn; one sister, Gloria (Jim) DeGroote of Shell Rock, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. Burial was in the Allison Cemetery.
