Mae Poppen, age 82, of Clarksville, Iowa, died Sunday, August 27, 2006, at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, of natural causes. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 30, 2006, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville with burial in the Allison Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville (319)278-4245 and one hour before services at the funeral home. TJELMELAND

Melissa (Fick) Tjelmeland, 56, died of ovarian cancer on Saturday, August 26, 2006. Melissa was born to Frank and Bette (Landis) Fick of Clarksville, Iowa on December 3, 1949. Melissa attended Clarksville Community School and graduated with the class of 1968. After graduating from high school she attended Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls, where she met Jim Tjelmeland. The couple was married on June 12, 1970 at the Clarksville Community Church in Clarksville. Melissa and Jim made Vinton their home in 1973. Melissa worked at the 4th street veterinary clinic in Vinton for 19 years and was a member of the Vinton Presbyterian Church. Melissa enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, and basset hounds, and the pets and clients at the 4th street veterinary clinic. Melissa is survived by her husband, Jim; two daughters, Lee Tjelmeland (Benjamin Hicks) of Des Moines and Kay Reser (Jason Reser) of Bristow; one grandson, Davis Jay Reser also of Bristow; and one brother, Landis Fick (Nancy) of Iowa City. She was preceded in death by her parents Bette (Landis) Fick and Frank Fick. The family will host a greeting in the Fellowship Hall of the Vinton Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 2, 2006, from 1PM to 4PM. Arrangements by the Cremation Society of Eastern Iowa.


BIRLEY

Jennette Birley, age 87, of Aplington, Iowa, was born June 7, 1919, near Aplington, Iowa, the daughter of John and Margaret Bohlen Haan. She received her education at Spring Garden Country School, in Butler County, Iowa. Jennette was united in marriage with Floyd Birley on August 4, 1939, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple lived first with Floyd’s parents. In 1950 they moved to a farm north of Aplington where they farmed until they moved into Aplington in 1994. They had celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary August 4th. Jennette attended Sunday School and Church at Hitesville when she was younger. Later she attended Bethel Reformed Church. She enjoyed listening to the radio of the First Reformed Church services. She was saved February 17, 1936, with John 3:36. Jennette was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She also was a master homemaker whose family especially enjoyed her cooking. Many delicious meals and conversations were shared around the kitchen table. You could never leave her home without her asking, “Would you like to stay and eat a bite with us?” M&M’s, chocolate cake, ice cream and other goodies were always on hand for when family and friends stopped in to visit. Jennette had a special way of making everyone feel welcome. Although she kept very busy helping on the farm; and after retiring, she was never too busy to help her family. Her love and devotion to her family was shown every day. She will be greatly missed. Jennette died Monday, August 21, 2006, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, John (Taft), Harm, Fred, George and Jake Haan; an infant brother, John Haan; and a son-in-law, Gary Sill. Jennette is survived by her husband of 67 years, Floyd Birley, Aplington, Iowa; one son, Larry (Linda) Birley, Aplington, Iowa; two daughters, Janice (LeRoy) Ostendorf, Ackley, Iowa; Phyllis Sill, Aplington, Iowa; Six grandchildren, Vince (Susan) Birley, Dawn (Tony) Standera; LeAnn (Steve) Greene; Teresa Hippen, Peggy (Wayne) Gipple; Curtis (Amy) Sill; 13 great-grandchildren, Ben, Connor, Anna Grace Birley; Nathan, Nicole, Korrigan Hippen; Kayla Ostendorf, Jewel, Vicki, Bobby Dean Gipple; Morgan, Jared, Kyla Sill; one brother, Andrew Haan, Clarksville, Iowa; three sisters-in-law, Doris Haan, Shell Rock, Iowa; Mabel Haan and Francis Haan, both of Aplington. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, August 24, 2006 at Hitesville Gospel Hall, Aplington, Iowa with Mr. Robert Orr officiating. Vocalist Doris Haan sang “Rock of Ages”. Congregational Hymns were “Safe in the Arms of Jesus” and “Amazing Grace”. Casketbearers were Curtis Sill, Steve Greene, Tony Standera, Wayne Gipple, Nathan Hippen and Vince Birley. Burial was in Bethel Reformed Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

NORMAN

Eva M. Norman, 95, of Hansell, Iowa, passed away August 30, 2006, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa. She was born March 3, 1911, in Greene, Iowa, to Samuel F. and Annie (Richard) Allen. Eva graduated from the Hansell High School in 1929. She married Delores Beryl Norman on December 28, 1941, at Union Ridge Church of the Brethren north of Hansell. Eva worked at Coonley Hotel coffee shop in Hampton for several years, later employed at the Hansell Savings Bank and Hansell Post Office. She belonged to the Hansell Methodist Womens Fellowship group, Hansell Senior Citizens and K & S Sewing Club. She liked people, enjoyed crocheting, crafts and traveling. Eva was a member of the Hansell United Methodist Church. She is survived by her son Daryl & wife Cindy Norman of Hansell, daughter LeAnn & husband James “Biff” Winsor of Dallas, Texas, four grandchildren: Dustin, Laura, Michael & Nicole Norman, nephew Duane Niswander, four sister-in-laws and several nieces and nephews. Eva was preceded in death by her parents, husband in May 28, 1979, sister Alta Niswander and brother Wayne Allen. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 2, 2006 at the Hansell United Methodist Church with Rev. Elsa Lawry officiating. Special music was provided by organist Geraldine Koch accompanying soloist Dawn Simons. Ushers were Ron Schulz and Clarence Moore. Pallbearers were Jesse Viet, Joe Hanna, Steve Norman, Skip Norman, Dustin Norman and Michael Norman. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

CONKLIN

Albert Richard Conklin, age 74, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son of Vaughn and Effie (Dietz) Conklin on September 16, 1931, in Bremer County near Waverly, Iowa. He received his education and graduated from the Plainfield High School in 1949. Following graduation he began working at Carver’s Lumber. Albert served in the United States Navy from 1951 - 1955 aboard the U.S.S. Oriskany during the Korean War. When he returned home from the military he resumed working at Carver’s Lumber. On January 5, 1958, Albert was united in marriage with Arlene Mae Hirsch at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Through the years he worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, the Waverly Post Office as a custodial worker and the City of Clarksville. Albert was a member of the American Legion in Clarksville. He loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed fishing, camping and gardening. His hobbies included woodworking, crafts and quilting. He enjoyed spending time with his family. Albert died Thursday, August 31, 2006, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, John deNeui. Albert is survived by his wife, Arlene Conklin of Clarksville, IA; two sons, Michael (Diane) Conklin of Dumont, IA and Kevin Conklin of Clarksville, IA; three daughters, Arlana Poland of Clarksville, IA, Linda Kramer and her special friend Anthony Fisher of Hansell, IA and Tamara Majewski of Greene, IA; eight grandchildren, Jeramiah, Lacie, Lucas, Scott, Chelsi, Corey, Autumn and Braden; two brothers, Alvin (Liz) Conklin of Casa Grande, AZ and James (Beverly) of Plainfield, IA; and two sisters, Betty deNeui of Waverly, IA and Marie (Russell) Rohwedder of Waverly, IA. Funeral Services where held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 6, 2006, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ with Pastor Laura Hucke officiating. Harriett Forry was the organist and the congregational hymns where “Amazing Grace” and “In The Garden.” Honorary Casketbearers where his grandchildren; Jeramiah Poland, Lacie Kramer, Lucas Kramer, Scott Conklin, Chelsi Majewski, Corey Conklin, Autumn Majewski, and Braden Conklin. Casketbearers where Jeff Ralvanz, Jeff Kromminga, Don Kielman, Arlan Laube, Bruce Hoodjer, and Darrell Aissen. Military rites where provided by the Clarksville AMVETS post # 30. Inurnment will be held at a latter date at the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville. Flower committee was Marge Nordmeyer and Alesia Kromminga. Memorial maybe directed to the family of Albert Conklin. POPPEN

Mae Edna Poppen, age 82, of Clarksville, Iowa, formerly of Ledges in Waverly, Iowa; was born May 18, 1924, the daughter of Harm and Anna Hoodjer Poppen near Allison in Butler County, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. She received her education and graduated from Allison High School in 1942. She attended Wartburg College and later earned her Masters Degree in teaching at LA State College while living in California. Mae first taught school in Butler, Bremer and Floyd Counties. She moved to California in 1955 where she was an elementary school teacher, until her retirement in 1989. In 2004 she returned to Iowa and lived in Waverly. Mae enjoyed traveling, sewing and reading. She was a season ticket holder to the Oakland Raiders games. She was a member of the Music Center of Los Angeles. Mae died Sunday, August 27, 2006, at Community Nursing Home in Clarksville of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harm and Anna Poppen and infant twin sisters. Mae is survived by two brothers, Lynn (Peg) Poppen, Charles City, Iowa and Vern (Vera) Poppen, Clarksville, Iowa and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., August 30, 2006, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville, Iowa with Rev. Marvin Schumacher officiating. Special music was the hymns, “Abide With Me” and “Amazing Grace”. Casketbearers were Gary Poppen, Dennis Awe, Jerry Magnuson, DeWayne Fasse, Joel Poppen and Tom Hoogestraat. Interment was in the Allison Cemetery, Allison, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.


OPPERMAN

Jack R. Opperman, 80, of Marshalltown, Iowa, and formerly of Waverly and Allison, died Tuesday afternoon, August 29, 2006, at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. He was born on February 16, 1926, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and was raised in Allison, Iowa, where he graduated from high school. He then entered the US Navy during WWII, and upon his discharge he returned to Iowa. He then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls where he received his BA. In 1950 he was united in marriage to Harriette Wilder and the couple made their home in Allison where they farmed. Jack then sold insurance for a time and later owned a restaurant in Allison. Harriet died in 1971 and Jack eventually retired and moved to Waverly. In January of 2005 ill health forced him to move to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown where he had since lived. He was a life member of the Amvets Post. Jack is survived by his two adopted children, Terri (Ron) Bertram of Shell Rock, Gene Ramsey of Tucson, Arizona; four grandsons, William Bertram, Aaron Bertram, Mark Bertram and Licon Opperman; and eight great grandchildren, Tristin, Jordan, Shelby, Shay and Summer Bertram, and Xairia, Paris, Titian Opperman. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Harriette; and one grandson, Nathan Bertram. The family will greet friends from 9:00 am until 10:30 am on Saturday, September 2, 2006, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, where there will also be a flag presentation by the Amvets Post #79, Waverly. There will no other services. His body has been cremated and private burial of the cremains will be in the Allison Cemetery, Allison. Pamela K. (Crane) Hansen, 52, of Waverly, Iowa, died Saturday morning, September 2, 2006, at the Waverly Health Center following a sudden illness. Pam was born on November 6, 1953 in Ft. Dodge, Iowa, the daughter of Billy & Barbara (Hute) Crane. At a young age she moved with her family to Clarksville, Iowa, where she was baptized on March 30, 1958 at I.U. Church of Christ and later confirmed on March 19, 1967. She attended school in Clarksville, and on August 9, 1969 she married Jeffrey Franke and to this union one son was born, Steven. The couple later divorced. On June 25, 1976 she was united in marriage to Steve Hansen at Clarksville, Iowa. The couple made their home in Waverly and for many years Pam worked at the Senior Center until it closed. She then went to work for Rubber Development Inc, Waverly, where she was currently employed. Pam enjoyed getting together with friends and just visiting. She loved to cook and was known for her deviled eggs and pumpkin bars. She loved spending time with her family and fishing with her husband. Pam is survived by her husband, Steve Hansen of Waverly; one son, Steven Franke of Copperas Cove, Texas; her parents, Billy & Barbara Crane of Clarksville; three sisters, Sandy (Bill) Rustad of Waverly, Brenda (Al) Worrell of Janesville, Janice (Rick) Wehrhan of Allison; and one brother, Steven (Cindy) Crane of Clarksville; four nieces; two nephews; several step nieces and nephews, and two aunts, Phyllis Myatt of Maquoketa, Iowa, and Beverly (Wendell) Higgins of Delmar, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her grandparents; one infant brother, Patrick Michael Crane; one infant nephew, Blake Howard Wehrhan, and her mother and father-in-law, Phyllis and Lyle Hansen. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 7, 2006, 1:30 pm at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, with Pastor Reuben Topp officiating. Burial will be at later date. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly. Friends may also call on Thursday morning prior to the services. Ruth Naomi Kramer, 80, of Ankeny, Iowa, formerly of Dumont, Iowa, passed away August 31, 2006, at the Mill-Pond Care Facility in Ankeny, Iowa. She was born July 4, 1926, in Hampton, Iowa, to Arthur and Iva (Cooper) Springer. Ruth graduated from the Dumont High School. She married John Kramer on May 22, 1944, in Owatonna, Minnesota. Ruth was a homemaker. She was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont, Iowa. Ruth loved to play cards, jigsaw puzzles, sewing, baking, playing bingo, needlework and enjoyed spending time with her family. She is survived by her daughter Peggy & husband John Wedeking of Ankeny, daughter Karen & husband Bernard Freese of Sacramento, California, son Steven Kramer of Waterloo, Granddaughter Laura & John, grandson Eric & Jonna, great grandchildren Amy & Rueben. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters and two brothers. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 2, 2006 at New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont with Rev. Jay Amundson officiating. Special music was provided by organist Mrs. Beryl Reed accompanying the congregational singing. Pallbearers were Tim Radig, Eric Freese, Ben Springer, John Wedeking, John Mellinger and Bernard Freese. Marian Hoerman has received the notice of the death of her sister, Margaret Courbat, of Land O’ Lakes, Florida. Margaret passed away August 19, 2006, at her home. Margaret was born December, 1929, to Eldon and Anna Wedeking Hirsch. She graduated from Clarksville and was united in marriage to Shine Courbat. They lived in Grundy Center and Manchester before moving to Florida. She is survived by three daughters, Patricia Courbat of Land O’ Lakes, Dawn Courbat of Switzerland, and Pam Elliott of Tampa; and a sister, Marian Hoerman of Clarksville. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Merywn (Shine) Courbat; her parents, Eldon and Anna Hirsch Sr., and a brother, Eldon Hirsch, Jr.


SERFOSS

Esther Larene Serfoss, age 98, of Allison, IA; was born May 24, 1908, the daughter of Charles and Clara M. (Fellows) Toll near Allison; Jefferson Township in Butler County, Iowa. She graduated from the Allison High School and attended Gates Business College in Waterloo. Esther worked as a secretary of the Butler County Court House in Allison, Farm Bureau Insurance Company in Allison and the health care clinic in Waverly, IA. She was united in marriage with Ralph Serfoss in 1958 at her parent’s home near Allison, Iowa, Jefferson Township. They were later divorced. Ester died Wednesday, August 30, 2006, at Allison Health Care Center of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Clara; one sister, Lois; and a niece, Joyce Johnson. Graveside Services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 2, 2006 at the Allison Cemetery, Allison, Iowa with Rev. Val Swinton officiating. Burial was in the Allison Cemetery. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the donor’s choice.

AALDERKS

William Paul Aalderks, age 74, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of George and Katherine (Schipper) Aalderks on March 3, 1932, at home in Butler County, rural Aplington, Iowa. He received his education from a rural country school near his home and graduated from the Aplington High School in 1950. Willie served in the United States Army from 1953 - 1955 during the Korean War. Willie was united in marriage to Phyllis Miller on September 21, 1955, at the Bethel Reformed Church, rural Aplington, Iowa. They farmed in the Ackley and Parkersburg area for 10 years. Willie hauled milk on a dairy route throughout Butler County. Through the years he also worked for Tuloma Gas, M & R Hardware in Aplington, FarMech in Parkersburg and also with Schwartz Funeral Home serving the community for many years. During this time he also drove gas truck for the Standard Oil Company for over 30 years and was an auctioneer for over 30 years until he retired. Willie was an active member of the First Reformed Church in Aplington where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and sang in the Choir. He sang with the Layman Quartet for a couple of years, the Singing Gospeliers during the 70’s and 80’s and then sang with the Aalderk’s Family from 1990 through 2006 at many churches and local events. He loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. Willie died Wednesday, September 6, 2006, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his father, George Aalderks and his grandparents. Willie is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Aplington, IA; one daughter, Mitzi (Virgil) Collins of Guttenberg, IA; one son, Randy (Camie) Aalderks of Aplington; five grandchildren, Lisa (Kevin) Peek, Mindie (Klay) Hoppenworth, Cassie (Landon) Schrage, John Collins and Adam Aalderks; three great grandsons, Corey Peek, Kamdon Hoppenworth and Kyle Peek; his mother, Katherine Aalderks of Kesley, IA; two brothers, Andy (Barb) Aalderks of Kesley, IA and Marvin (Rosie) Aalderks of Parkersburg; many nieces and nephews; one foster daughter, Linda Anderson of Des Moines, IA; three step-grandchildren, Michael Collins, Jill Collins and Tina Fischer; seven step-great grandchildren, Brenna, Matt, Jade, Brittany, Hayley, Vance and Sydney. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, September 9, 2006 at the First Reformed Church in Aplington, Iowa with Rev. Harlan DeJong officiating. Organist was Lois Wessels. Special piano music was presented by Randy Aalderks. Vocalist Jim Ridder sang “He Touched Me”. Congregational Hymn was “In the Garden”. Honorary Casketbearers were Adam Aalderks and John Collins. Casketbearers were Myron Aalderks, Curtis Aalderks, Gaylen Miller, Roy Hassman, Karl Harken and Keith Burman. Flower Committee was Millie Ridder, Norma Burman and Edie DeBoer. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Aplington, Iowa with Full Military Rites provided by the Kesley AMVETS. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. KEPPLE

A Funeral Mass for Claire E. Kepple, 96, Greene, was held Thursday, September 7, 2006, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Greene. Claire Earl Kepple was born August 9, 1910, on a farm near Republic, Iowa, a son of Guy and Lydia (Adams) Kepple, and died Tuesday, September 5, 2006 at the Liebe Care Center in Greene. He went to country school for seven years and attended the Marble Rock High School where he graduated in 1929. During the Depression when jobs were hard to find, he worked for John Jesmore in Marble Rock repairing motors. Claire met Leora Hurd at a dance in 1929 and married her on February 25, 1935. Claire and Leora moved to Waterloo in 1935 where he was employed by John Deere until 1946. That year they moved to a farm near Greene, where they farmed and lived until 2004 when they made their home at the Liebe Care Center. From 1951 to 1970 Claire operated a saw mill on the farm doing custom work. He loved to hunt and fish. Claire and Leora spent many summers in Canada guiding on Lac de Mille Lac, and they spent winters in Texas for 25 years. They also loved to dance and belonged to a square dance club for many years. His memory will be cherished by his loving wife of 71 years, Leora of Greene; his children: Robert (Swanie) Kepple of Greene, Rita (Bob) Barth of Greene; nine grandchildren: Mike (Lois) Kepple, Kelly (Al) Zweck, Kayleen (Jason) Landers, Rhonda Perry and friend Bob, Boyd (Shawn) Barth, Brenda (Todd) Medenwaldt, Denise (Chris) Nenninger, April (Shawn) Grant, Nicole (Erik) Graham; 15 great grandchildren; one brother: Clark (Irene) Kepple of Ionia; one sister: Virginia Moline of Cushing, OK and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter in law: Linda Kepple, Brother-in-Law: Raymond Moline; and a grandson-in-law: Fred Perry. NEAL

Helen Repine Neal (Mrs. Lloyd Neal) died September 5, 2006 from complications after receiving a new pacemaker. Helen was born July 28, 1913 in Noble County, Indiana. She grew up and attended school in Huntertown, Indiana, married Lloyd Neal of Bristow, Iowa, where they lived until 1951, then moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa and later to Miami, Florida. After Lloyd’s death in 1992, she moved to Pt. Richey, Florida and lived nearer to family. Helen was always a homemaker, but did sewing for the community, was an artist, an avid crossword solver and also the Bristow correspondent for the local newspapers until their move. While in Florida, she was a veterinary assistant for Dr. Bild, a noted veterinary surgeon until she was over 80 years old. She is survived by her four children: Robert D. (Shirley) Neal, Sebring, Florida; Ken M. (Melanie) Neal, Westlake, Michigan; Janice (Marv) Schumacher, Clarksville, Iowa, and Delores (Ken) Boward, Pt. Richey, Florida; fourteen grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren; and her sister Juanita Reid of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Lillian Repine, husband, Lloyd Neal, two brothers, Paul and Kenneth Repine, and one granddaughter, Suzette Neal. The body was cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date in Iowa.

Dr. Daniel William Miller MD, 36, of Dossenheim, Germany, and formerly of Cedar Falls, was born the son of Robert L. and Lanora F. (Gersema) Miller on March 17, 1970 in Cedar Falls, and passed away August 15, 2006, in Heidelberg, Germany, from complications of cancer. Dan grew up in Cedar Falls and attended school in the Cedar Falls Community School District through the 11th grade and later transferred to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where he graduated in 1988. He was also a member of the Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls. He attended Iowa State University for two years and later transferred to the University of Iowa to study medicine. While doing his undergraduate work at U of I, he met and married Elisabeth Von Eyb on May 22, 1993, in Ebermansdorf, Germany. Upon his graduation from the University of Iowa, he chose to attend medical school at the University of Marburg in Marburg, Germany, and later transferred to the University of Heidelberg where he received his medical doctorate. He was in the final year of residency in ophthalmology. Dan was an active person who enjoyed life, liked to bicycle, fly fish, cook gourmet meals, be with friends and family, and had a great love for people. Dan is survived by his wife Elisabeth, two children: Felix C., 5 years, and Fiona E., 3 years, all of Dossenheim, Germany; his parents Robert L. and Lanora F. Miller of Galena, Illinois; his brother Greg A. and wife Donna S. Miller and their children, Ethan, Grant and Lance of Lake Barrington, Illinois; his paternal grandparents, Harvey and Marjorie Miller of Clarksville; his father and mother-in-law, Eckart and Elisabeth Von Eyb of Ebermansdorf, Germany, aunts, uncles, colleagues, friends, and many other relatives. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Henry and Grace Gersema. A memorial service was held on September 16, 2006, at the Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls conducted by Rev. Cathy Young. A memorial service was held in Heidelberg, Germany, on August 18, 2006 and family funeral services were held August 19, 2006, in Ebermansdorf, Germany, with burial in the family cemetery. Russell Dean Haan, age 57, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of George and Francis (Rewerts) Haan on November 27, 1949, Aplington, Iowa. He grew up in Kesley and attended a country school through the 8th grade. In 1968 Russ graduated from the Aplington High School were he played on the varsity football team. Russ continued his education at Hawkeye Technical College in Waterloo for two years in Police Science. After graduation he worked in Waterloo, Hudson, LaPorte City & Aplington as a Police Officer. Russ wanted to serve his country more and enlisted in the U.S. Army. After 10 years of service Russ was discharged for medical reasons. He then moved back to Iowa and made his home near Kesley where he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Russ died Wednesday September 6, 2006 at his home at the Praire Village Apartments in Parkersburg, IA of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his father George Haan almost three years ago. Russell is survived by his mother, Franceis Haan of Maple Manor in Aplington, IA; one sister, Shirley (Gary) Marks of Gering, NE; two nephews Jason Marks of Glenwood Springs, CO. and Jeff (Erin) Marks of Scottsbluff, NE. Graveside Services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 16, 2006 at the Washington Reformed Cemetery, rural Ackley, Iowa with Pastor Mike Brost officiating. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements.
