Martha Schroeder

Martha Schroeder, age 98, of Mason City, Iowa, formerly of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of Harm and Jessie (Hartema) Huesinga on December 14, 1907, German Township, Ackley, Iowa. She received her education at a rural country school near her home. Martha was united in marriage with William Schroeder on April 26, 1928, in Ackley, Iowa. They made their home on a farm near Ackley. They moved to a farm northeast of Parkersburg in the late 1930’s and retired in 1967, when they moved to town. Martha was a member of the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg, where she attended the Ladies Guild for many years. She enjoyed embroidering, crocheting and taking care of her vegetable and flower gardens. In her earlier years she enjoyed going fishing with William to their favorite place at Little Rainy Lake in Backus, Minnesota. Her family especially remembers her home made bread and all of her wonderful home cooked meals. Martha died on Thursday, January 26, 2006, at her daughter, Mary’s home in Mason City, Iowa, from complications of pancreatic cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Schroeder on October 4, 1978; one daughter, Anna Mae Van Hove; two grandsons, Mark and Larry Conrads; four brothers, George, Able, Martin and Herman; and five sisters, Tina, Jenny, Jesse, Grace and Anna. Martha is survived by one son, Bill (Madonna) Schroeder of Parkersburg, IA; three daughters, Jessie (Robert) Wubbena of Butler Center, Allison, IA, Dorothy (Jake) Conrads of Crestwood, IL and Mary (Richard) Squier of Mason City, IA; nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren, James (Bonnie Sue) Van Hove and their children Nathan & Kyle, Joyce (R Jay) Ennis and their children, Heather French and children, Dillon Williams & Paije Sletten, Chad (Michelle) French and their children, Ethan & Brianna; Stan (Thea) Wubbena and their children, Whitney & Nicole; Lori Darling and her son, Andrew, Julie Conrads, Janet Conrads; Jeff Squier; Peggy (Curt) Smeins and their daughter, Bailey, Shawn (Jodi) Schroeder and their children, Jessica, Josie and Brooklyn; one sister, Katie Stockdale of Aplington, IA; a son-in-law, Ben (Mildred) Van Hove of Hampton, IA; and one sister-in-law, Martha Huesinga of Hampton, IA. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 30, 2006 at the First Congregational Church with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, both in Parkersburg, Iowa. Officiating was Rev. Paul Schaedig. Organist was Mary Ann Simon. Jan Johnson and Chuck Juel sang a duet of “What a Friend We Have In Jesus”. Congregational Hymns were “The Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art”. Casketbearers were Stan Wubbena, James Van Hove, Jeff Squier, Shawn Schroeder, John Schneiderman and Richard Brouwer. Memorials may be directed to the family. Raymond S. Daughenbaugh

Memorial services for Raymond S. Daughenbaugh, 83, of Greene, were held Friday, January 27, 2006, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, Greene, where military rites were conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene. Inurnment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City at a later date. Raymond Siegel Daughenbaugh was born August 29, 1922 in Charles City, a son of Dale and Addie Louella (Teedy) Daughenbaugh, and died Monday, January 23, 2006, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. He received his education in the Charles City Public Schools graduating in 1941. During and following high school he worked part-time for Harvey’s Jack Spratt Grocery, as a sales clerk and butcher. On September 23, 1941, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp where he served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater from October 15, 1942 to November 27, 1944. He participated in action at Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, and Paleliu. He was Honorably discharged on September 26, 1945. Raymond was united in marriage to Helen Naudine Lumsdon in Charles City. They made their home in Charles City, where he worked at the Oliver Tractor Works. In 1952 they moved to Ventura County, California where he began his career as an Engineering Technician with Pacific Missile Range at Point Mugu. During his career he was awarded 23 patents which many are still used today in both military and civilian applications. His inventions include the seat built for one of the first monkeys in space, an underwater demolition device, and a self inflating life raft, to mention just a few. He retired in 1973. In 1974, Raymond and his family moved to Greene to be close to other family members. Ever since Raymond was a child, he had a great love for horses. While living in California, he helped friends who were cattle ranchers, as a weekend cowboy. Tony, his favorite Palomino stallion, placed second at the California State Fair. Later he acquired his pride and joy, Adios Judy, a registered quarter horse. He and Judy were considered one of the best heeling roping teams around. His retirement hobbies were raising ponies, and designing and building sleighs and buggies. He also enjoyed going to horse sales throughout the mid west. Living family members include his loving wife of 60 years, Naudine of Greene, two daughters: Susan Kay (Gary) Koehler of Rochester, MN, Lou Ann (Gary) Gibson of Greene; one son: Glen Ray Daughenbaugh of Mason City, three grandchildren: Casey Ray Daughenbaugh, Lee Patrick Daughenbaugh, and Adeline Jane Gibson; one brother: Fay Calvin Daughenbaugh of Salinas, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother: Glen Daughenbaugh. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the family. Lavola Grace Sessler

Lavola Grace Sessler, age 77, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of Henry G. and Lilly (Harris) Maifeld on May 12, 1928, on a farm near Ackley, Iowa. She lived near the Washington Reformed Church, where she attended church and rural country school nearby. Lavola graduated from the Dumont High School in 1945. She continued her education at the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa and then the Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. She taught at a rural country school close to home for 2 ½ years and later taught the 5th grade at the Jubilee School south of La Porte City, Iowa. Lavola was united in marriage with Art Sessler on August 14, 1948, at the Dumont Reformed Church, Dumont, Iowa. They made their home on a farm north of Aplington, where they worked hard and saved to buy Arts parents farm in 1962, and continued to farm until retirement. Lavola was a member of the Bethel Reformed Church, until they moved to Parkersburg and transferred to the Hope Reformed Church. She taught Sunday School, Catechism, Bible School and enjoyed going to women’s groups at church. Through the years Lavola and Art enjoyed traveling across most of the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, canning, reading, playing the piano and listening to music. The family usually made it up to Minnesota fishing every summer. Lavola was an excellent cook. Her homemade rolls and cookies were the best. She especially liked spending time with her kids and grandkids and kept in touch with them daily. She was best known for her wonderful smile and warm caring way towards others. On Saturday, January 28, 2006, Lavola passed on at the Allison Care Center in Allison, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by one brother, Merwyn Maifeld and her parents, Henry and Lilly Maifeld. Lavola is survived by her husband, Art Sessler of Parkersburg, IA; one son, Dennis (Teresa) Sessler of Aplington, IA; two daughters, Marilyn (Ken) Wyant of Waterloo, IA and Bonnie (special friend, Cindy Forsyth) Sessler of Janesville, IA; six grandchildren, Dawn Peyton, Brad Wyant, Jennifer, Angela, Sarah and Jason Sessler; two great grandchildren, Joshua and Hannah Peyton; two brothers, Lloyd (special friend, Luella Smith) Maifeld of Hampton, IA and Norman Maifeld of Iowa Falls, IA Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 1, 2006, at Hope Reformed Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Neal Ooms officiating. Organist was Cathy Meyer. A duet of Trent and Rita Gerdes sang “Amazing Grace” and “One Day at a Time”. Congregational Hymns were “In The Garden” and “The Old Rugged Cross”. Casketbearers were Dwayne Sessler, Al Schmeidel, Kenny Seehusen, Steven Peyton, Steve Haugstad and Bradley Wyant. Interment was in Bethel Reformed Cemetery, rural Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family or the American Diabetes Association.


Caroline Irene Johnson

Caroline Irene Johnson, age 71, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Wesley and Ethel (Garton) Blum on May 29, 1934, on a farm west of Cedar Falls, Iowa. In 1937 her father, Wesley died and the family moved to Detroit, Michigan. She received her education and graduated from high school in Detroit. In 1952 she moved back to Iowa and lived in Cedar Falls, where Caroline worked for Wagner Manufacturing and also was a baby sitter for the Bolser family. Caroline Blum was united in marriage with Walter Johnson on November 7, 1954, at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, Iowa. They made their home on Walter’s family farm, where they currently live. Caroline helped with a lot of the farming, the livestock and enjoyed driving the tractor occasionally. In 1980 Caroline became a Certified Nurses Assistant and worked for Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington for approximately 10 years. She was known as a very hard worker and was a cancer survivor for 22 years. Caroline was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, where she taught Sunday School and was active in the Ladies Circle for many years. She loved being apart of her children’s activities and was a 4-H leader for many years, she helped with judging at the Grundy County Fair exhibits until last year and helped the Grundy County Cattlemen which included the Iowa State Fair. Caroline was a wonderful cook, baker and her family especially enjoyed her potato salad and cinnamon rolls she made. Above all, she was a loving wife of 51 years, mother and grandmother. She loved her family very much and enjoyed playing cards with her family, friends and neighbors. Caroline died Thursday, January 26, 2006, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa, from complications of cancer. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda at two months of age; her parents, Wesley and Ethel Blum; three brothers, Wesley in infancy, and Harold and William Blum. Caroline is survived by her husband, Walter Johnson of Aplington, IA; three sons, Glenn (Carol) Johnson of Parkersburg, IA, Dale (Tracy) Johnson of Geneva, IA and Lynn (Kris) Johnson of Ackley, IA; three daughters, Mary (Vance) Reints of Aplington, IA, Elaine (Gerald) Droppert of Lynnville, IA and Sally (Erik) Eggland of Ankeny, IA; 16 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, Linda (Randy) Berends and their daughter, Abby, Jennifer (Steve) Long, Andrew Johnson; Jeremy Reints, Jared (Britt) Reints and their children, Devin and Emma and Joel (Brandy) Reints; Justin Droppert and Carrie (Ryan) Mortvedt; Lillie, Hannah & Sam Johnson; Jacob, Jami & Jodi Johnson; and Anna & Evan Eggland; two brothers, Robert Blum of Cedar Falls, IA and Roger (Ruth) Blum of Verdale, WA; one sister, Ethel Abkes of Cedar Falls, IA; and one sister-in-law, Irene Blum of Cedar Falls, IA. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, January 30, 2006 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Daniel J. Larson officiating. Organist was Bernita Nicklaus. Soloist Dale Boelman sang “In the Garden” and “One Day at a Time”. Special Music was “Somebody’s Hero” by Jamie O’Neal. Congregational Hymn was “Amazing Grace”. Honorary Casketbearers were Jacob Johnson, Sam Johnson, Steve Long, Ryan Mortvedt and Evan Eggland. Casketbearers were Justin Droppert, Jeremy Reints, Jared Reints, Joel Reints, Andrew Johnson and Randy Berends. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Andrew Leonard Kadous

Andrew Leonard Kadous, age 82, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Anton and Johanna (Bronsema) Kadous on April 4, 1923, near Aplington, Iowa. He received his education and graduated from Parkersburg High School. Andy served in the United States Navy from June 27, 1942, until December 8, 1945, during World War II. He served in the Pacific. Andrew was united in marriage with Junas Eilers on February 26, 1947, at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg. They made their home in Parkersburg and lived there their entire marriage. Andy was a manager of the Iowa Public Service, now known as MidAmerican Energy. He began working as a lineman and worked his way up to management. He was employed with the company for 30 years. Andy was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, where he served as a councilman, an usher, and on the Building Committee. He chaired the Butler County Conservation Board for 20 years, was a past Rotarian, and a longtime member of the Parkersburg Chamber of Commerce. He also chaired the REAP Program for Butler County. Andy loved to spend time outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Andy died Saturday, January 28, 2006, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by a son, James Kadous; his parents, Anton and Johanna Kadous; and one sister, Delores Cashatt. Andy is survived by his wife, Junas, of Parkersburg, IA; a granddaughter, Lisa, of Washington, DC; two sisters, Harmena (Walter) Schell of Parkersburg, IA, and Linda Workman of Maine; and one brother, Bill Kadous, of Clarksville, IA. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at the Faith Lutheran Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Daniel J. Larsen officiating. Organist was Bernita Nicklaus. Soloist Tom Teeple sang “How Great Thou Art”. Congregational Hymns were “I’m But a Stranger Here” and “Abide With Me”. Casketbearers were Mitchell Cashatt, Tim Cashatt, Daniel Schell, Joseph Schell, Randy Schell and Robert Schell. Military Rites were provided by Aplington Amvets Post #102. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Brandon Keith Ayers

Brandon Keith Ayers, 21, of Dumont, Iowa, went home to Jesus on January 26, 2006, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa. He was born August 25, 1984, in Mason City, Iowa, to Brian and Denise (Collins) Ayers. Brandon graduated from the Sheffield High School. He worked side by side doing construction with his grandfather Richard Collins. We will always have reminders of Brandon and Grandpa’s hard work all over Butler County. Brandon enjoyed boating, fishing, snowmobiling, motorcycles, especially Harley’s and he enjoyed driving his car. He was also very proud that he had his Black Belt in Taekwondo. Brandon was a very special person. He was very loyal to his friends and he loved his family, he would never end a phone conversation or leave without telling his family that he loved them and giving them a hug. Brandon came to know the Lord Jesus Christ in April of 1999, while attending Gospel Meetings in Aredale. Brandon will be missed every single day by his family that loved him so very much; his mother Denise & husband Troy Duryee and sister Tara of Alden, father Brian Ayers of Dumont, maternal grandparents Richard & wife Cheryl Collins of Dumont, paternal grandparents Kenneth & wife Sheryl Ayers of Bristow, uncle David Ayers of Bristow, uncle Jamey Ayers of Bristow, aunt Tami Howey of Bristow, aunt Doreen Price of Mukwonago, Wisconsin, maternal great grandparents Haldon & wife Ollie Collins of Dumont, paternal great grandmother Shirley Hansen of Aredale. He was preceded in death by his maternal great grandparents, and paternal great grandparents. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday January 30, 2006 at the Dumont Reformed Church with Allan Christopherson and Rev. Robert Scholten officiating. Music was provided by organist, Jim Siebrands, and songs “Held” by Natalie Grant, “Homesick” by Mercy Me, “Go Rest High” by Vince Gill, and “Just Beyond The River Jordan” and “I Can Only Imagine” by Mercy Me. Pallbearers were Gary Price, David Ayers, Jamey Ayers, Kurt Lewis, Nicholas Price and Dustin Ayers. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Edna Mathilda Edeker, 90, of Allison, Iowa, passed away January 31, 2006, at the Allison Health Care Center in Allison, Iowa. She was born October 22, 1915 in Fremont Township in rural Clarksville, Iowa, to Walter and Agnes (Ringleb) Heine. Edna attended Shady Dell School in Dayton Township rural Clarksville. She married Clarence Edeker on December 4, 1932, at the Pleasant Valley Church of Christ in Clarksville. Edna was a housewife. She was a member of St. John’s EV. Lutheran Church in rural Greene, Iowa. She enjoyed traveling, loved playing cards and was good at it. Enjoyed crocheting, spending time with her family and going to breakfast and shopping with Norma & Marcia. Edna is survived by her son Mervin & wife Marcia Edeker of Allison; daughter Norma Strom of Cedar Falls; sister Celia & husband Clarence Leisinger of Waverly; grandchildren: Troy Edeker, Brian & Lisa Edeker, Daniel & Lori Edeker, Kristin Montgomery; ten great grandchildren; two step grandchildren: Daniel Peters and Roger & Cheri Peters; three step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant brother, brother Ray, one infant grandchild, a daughter-in-law and a son-in-law. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m, Saturday, February 4, 2006 at St. John’s EV. Lutheran Church rural Greene with Rev. Mark Walker officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Florence Vieker accom-panying the congregational singing. Pallbearers were Kristin Montgomery, Troy Edeker, Dean Deike, Kevin Edeker, Brian Edeker, Roger Peters and Daniel Edeker. Final resting place was in St. John’s EV. Ruth Maifield

Ruth Maifield, age 81, of 1209 Parriott, Aplington, Iowa died Friday February 3, 2006 at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. Ruth Stover daughter of Fred “F.W.” and Dorothy (Niehaus) Stover, was born on February 6, 1924, in Sheffield, Iowa. Ruth graduated from Rockwell High School at age 16 and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Wheaton College. She taught school in Chester and Dumont, Iowa were she met her husband Gus. Ruth was united in marriage with Gustav Maifield on September 15, 1947 in Hampton, Iowa. After marriage, they initially lived on a farm near Rockwell but two years later established their home in Aplington, where Ruth raised eight children, was a substitute teacher, and worked at the nursing home. She provided long-term care for her husband, parents and her aunt Helen. Ruth was a member of the Aplington Baptist Church. Her kindness and gentleness will be missed by all. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, book club, various church groups, watching sports on T.V. and baking sugar cookies for holidays and special events. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gus, in 1984, one daughter, Lisa Maifield, in 1993, her parents, her sister, Joan, and brother, Leon. Ruth is survived by five sons, Michael “Mick” (Sue) Maifield of Cary, IL, Marty Maifield of Aplington, Dennis (Sally) Maifield of Glendale, CA, David Maifield of Aplington, and Steve (Deanna) Maifield of Altoona, IA; two daughters, Melaine (Kent) Brandt of Verona, WI, and Lori (Steve) Jackson of Point Richmond, CA; ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Glen and Dale Stover. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at the Aplington Baptist Church, Aplington, Iowa with Pastor Dan Smith and Rev. Donald Patet officiating. Pianist was Lois Wessels. Congregational Hymns were “Amazing Grace”, “In the Garden” and “How Great Thou Art”. Casketbearers were Matt Maifield, Kent Brandt, Steve Jackson and Greg Maifield. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Harlan LeRoy Haan

Harlan LeRoy Haan, age 89, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of Cornelius and Katie (Alberts) Haan, on February 7, 1916, near Aplington. Harlan received his education and graduated from Aplington High School in 1933. He worked at the Charles Willeke Cement Plant following high school. Harlan was inducted into the U.S. Army on May 3, 1941. He served as an Infantry Radio Operator during the war and was honorably discharged on May 16, 1945. Harlan was awarded three Bronze Stars for the Tunisian, Naples-Foggia, and Rome-Arno Campaigns and received the Purple Heart when he was wounded in action. Harlan was united in marriage with Ruth Evelyn Waughtal on December 15, 1946, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home in Aplington after marriage, where Harlan worked for Dreyer’s Furniture Store and he also was a substitute rural mail carrier. In 1965 they moved to Fallbrook, California, where Harlan was a full time rural mail carrier. Following retirement in 1978, they moved back to Aplington. Harlan was a member of the Aplington Baptist Church. He was very much loved by his wife, children and family. His kindness and gentleness will be missed by them all. Harlan was a very good baseball player in high school and after graduation he played softball on the Legion Cyclones, the town softball team. In his spare time he enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, gardening and fishing. Harlan died Sunday, January 29, 2006, at the Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa, from natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cornelius and Katie Haan; two sisters, Rosa Kusian and Lorraine Fletcher; and two brothers, Alvin and Duane Haan. Harlan is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruth Haan of Aplington, IA; one son, Gerald Haan of Fallbrook, California; one daughter, Dorothy Jean Knight of Oregon; two grandchildren, Jenifer and Timothy Knight; four sisters, Carrie Rindels of Shell Rock, IA, Ruth (Dr.George) Kirkelie of Anaheim, CA, Muriel (Victor) Card of Joshua Tree, CA, and Inez Ayers of Parkersburg, IA; one brother-in-law, Vern Fletcher of Loveland, CO; and one sister-in-law, Hazel Haan of Cedar Falls, IA. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 3, 2006 at the Aplington Baptist Church, Aplington, Iowa with Pastor Dan Smith and Rev. Donald Patet officiating. Pianist was Suzie Smith. Congregational Hymns were “Near to the Heart of God”, “All the Way, My Savior Leads Me” and “How Great Thou Art”. Casketbearers were Kenny Rindels, Keith Haan, Doug Kusian, Jim Kluiter, Darren Ayers and Daniel Kluiter. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Aplington, Iowa with Full Military Rites provided by Parkersburg American Legion Post # 285. Fred Ernest (Ernie) Rewerts

Fred Ernest (Ernie) Rewerts, 82, of Waverly, Iowa, died Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at his home. He was born on January 13, 1924 near Dike, Iowa, the son of Fred & Tillie (Buss) Rewerts and was baptized on March 1, 1924. He attended country school at Buck Grove near his home and following his formal education worked on the family farm. He then drove truck for Rath Packing for a time before going to work for his brother-in-law, Harm Aukes, on his farm. On March 30, 1946 he was united in marriage to Lois Miller at Bethel Reformed Church near Aplington. The couple then lived on a farm near Kesley for a short time before moving to their farm southwest of Shell Rock. They worked the land and for the next 40 years, retiring in 1989 and moving to their new home in Waverly. In the early 1990’s Ernie began mowing for the Waverly Golf Course, a job he held for the next four years. Ernie was a very faithful member of his church and for twenty five years had been a member at Trinity Reformed Church in Allison. He loved to play golf, especially with his grandchildren. Ernie loved to watch sunsets securing in his mind God’s order of things, but his greatest enjoyment came from his time spent with family. He is survived by his wife, Lois of Waverly; his children and their spouses, Roma & Larry Dieterichs of Waverly; Paulette & Jim Sauerbrei of Marengo; Janice & Larry Sailer of Iowa Falls; Craig & Vicky Rewerts of Waverly; Troy & Sue Rewerts of Waverly: 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and one sister, Thelma Evers of Cedar Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; two brothers and five nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Friday, February 3, 2006, at Trinity Reformed Church, Allison, with Pastor Steve Petroelje officiating. Burial was in the Harlington Cemetery, Waverly. Ray Edward Donat

Ray Edward Donat, son of Stanley and Phyllis Hof Donat, was born April 13, 1952 at Sumner, Iowa. He was baptized September 7, 1952 at Union United Methodist Church of rural Sumner and confirmed April 3, 1966 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, rural Sumner by Rev. Grunwald. He received his education in the Sumner Schools, graduating from Sumner High School with the class of 1970. He later attended Wartburg College for one year. On April 16, 1972, he was united in marriage with Connie Buhr at St. John American Lutheran Church, Buck Creek by Rev. Allan Stoa. Ray worked for 30 years at John Deere & Company before retiring in 2002. Following a courageous battle with multiple myeloma, Ray’s death occurred at his home on Friday, February 10, 2006. He was 53 years old and a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sumner. He was a leader and trainer with the Stephen Ministries of the church, served on the church council, and was a member of the dartball team and the senior choir. He was also a board member of the CMH Foundation, and a past member of the Sumner United Fund board, the Reach Project, and the Sumner Jaycees. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling, and playing cards. In addition to his wife, Connie of Sumner, he is survived by one son, Chad (Angela) Donat of Urbandale; one daughter, Amber (Joshua) Kass of Farmington, Minnesota; two grandsons, Kaelen and Nolan; his parents Stanley and Phyllis Donat of Maynard; three sisters, Janice (Steve) Vorthmann of Sumner, Pastor Ann Donat of Clarksville, and Dr. Patricia Donat of Columbus, Mississippi; one brother, Jim (Darise) Donat of Maynard; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; and his faithful companion, Maggie. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Carl and Lulu Hof and Marion and Ruth Donat, and an infant niece, Elizabeth. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 15, 2006, at St. John Lutheran Church, Sumner, with interment in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home, Sumner, was in charge of arrangements.

Funeral services for Merlyn D. Brunner, 84, of 2021 280TH Street, Marble Rock, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 20, 2006, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, February 19, 2006 at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 North First Street, Greene where there will be a public Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Monday one hour before services. Merlyn Doyle Brunner was born April 12, 1921 in rural Union Township, Floyd County, a son of Michael and Anna (Heinz) Brunner, and died Thursday, February 16, 2006, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene. He received his education in the rural school near his home and graduated from the Marble Rock High School in 1940. While in High School he played basketball and baseball. He later was pitcher for several fast pitch softball teams in the area, including the Barth Chevrolet team. He was rated as one of the top four pitchers in the state. Merlyn started farming with his father at an early age, and later went out on his own. On March 12, 1950 he was united in marriage to June Jeanette Gantenbein at St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church in Maynard. They moved on to their present farm East of Marble Rock where to this union were born two sons. He enjoyed hunting and trapping. In his later years he made the rounds in Greene and Marble Rock drinking coffee. He became an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan after his grandson, Greg, started playing basketball for the University of Iowa team. Merlyn was a member of the Greene Sportsman Club and also served on the Marble Rock Coop Elevator Board. Living family members include his two sons: Tim Brunner of Marble Rock, Tom (Gayle) Brunner of Charles City, three grandchildren: Richard (Janice) Torres of Troy, OH, Greg Brunner of Iowa City, Amy Brunner of Cedar Rapids; two sisters: Merna Teeple of Greene and Marie Ackley of Chillicothe, IL. He was preceded in death by his wife June on July 12, 1996, his parents, two sisters: Phyllis Craig, Betty Stanbrough, and three brothers: Nicholas Brunner, Robert Brunner, and Orville Brunner. Norman Dale Buseman

Norman Dale Buseman, 69, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away February 19, 2006, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. He was born May 8, 1936, in Ackley, Iowa to Ben and Dorthea (Harms) Buseman. He attended rural country schools and Dumont High School. Norman married Louise Freese on January 30, 1954, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Norman farmed in rural Aplington and Dumont, retiring to the town of Dumont in 2003. He was a member of Bethel Reformed Church rural Aplington and then transferred his membership to the Dumont Reformed Church. He was baptized on April 11, 1937 at the Washington Reformed Church, rural Ackley and confirmed as a teenager at the Washington Reformed Church. Norman enjoyed hunting, fishing, collecting guns as well as welding and working on machinery. Norman’s family was his pride and joy. He loved holding and playing with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren when little, loved sharing adventures with all on the farm in their youth and cared for and watched over all as adults. He is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Louise Buseman of Dumont, daughter Dixie & husband Scott Krause of Waterloo, daughter Mona & husband Gene Storm of Hampton, son Leslie & wife Cindy Buseman of Dumont, daughter Teresa & husband Darwin Butson of Hampton, daughter Valerie & husband David Baker of Eagle Grove, sister Lila & husband Henry Groeneveld of Aplington, brother Harold & wife Ruth Buseman of Aplington, brother Alvin & wife Peggy Buseman of Dumont. Norman is survived by 14 grandchildren, Beth Krause Wolfe & husband Joshua Wolfe of Cumming, Lacey Krause of Waterloo, Brandy and Ryan Mittelstadt of Coulter, Jesse Wood of Dumont, Justin Buseman & wife Missy of Cedar Falls, Travis Buseman of Dumont, Abby Connor and Samuel Butson of Hampton, Chantell, Carrington, Preston and Caleb Baker of Eagle Grove, Iowa and 2 great grandchildren, Logan Wolfe and Logan Buseman. Freddie Andrew Bohlen

Freddie Andrew Bohlen, 86, of Allison, Iowa, passed away February 18, 2006 at the Waverly Municipal Hospital in Waverly, Iowa. He was born March 13, 1919 in Madison Township in Butler County, Iowa to Fred and Anna (Siems) Bohlen. Freddie attended Allison Schools. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Freddie married Marjorie S. Lunde on January 16, 1949, in Nora Springs, Iowa. He worked for Allan Chevrolet and the Allison-Bristow Schools. He was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. Freddie enjoyed attending his sons school activities and helping Boy Scout Troop 29 during the period his sons were active. Later Freddie visited his sons frequently in Illinois and Washington State where he fished and watched his grandchildren participate in many sporting events. Freddie enjoyed playing cards with his friends in the Allison area and visiting the casinos in Iowa and Washington State. He also loved to hunt pheasants with his sons and dog Cole. His greatest hobby however wash fishing. He enjoyed fishing the Westfork and Shell Rock Rivers in Iowa. Freddie also enjoyed his numerous fishing trips in Minnesota, Canada and Washington State. Because of his love of the outdoors the worst day of fishing always beat the best day of work. He is survived by his wife Marjorie Bohlen of Allison, son Robert & wife Kathy Bohlen of Spokane, Washington, son Marvin Bohlen & wife Robin Kahn of Spokane, Washington, sister Irene Poppen of Allison, brother Alvin & wife Leone Bohlen of Allison, grandchildren: Forrest, Bret, Bryce Bohlen and Mitch Leppo. Freddie was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Jenny Bruns and Sena Santee. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with Rev. Jeffrey A. Blank officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Cecil Radcliffe accompanying the congregational singing. Pallbearers were John Bohlen, Billy Miller, Doug Poppen, Dwight Poppen, Dale Schoneman and Jay Schultz. Honorary pallbearers were Heyo Kampman and Roy Wiebke. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the city of Allison for Wilder’s Park improvements. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery with Military services provided by Allison AmVets. Treven Kielman

Treven Kielman, age 21, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born May 29, 1984, the son of Jeff Kielman and Brenda (Hirsch) Hewitt in Waverly, Iowa. He received his education in the Clarksville Community Schools. Treven enjoyed construction and concrete work. He was employed by Norm Mulder Construction. In his spare time he liked to cut wood and sell it for firewood. Treven spent time snowmobiling and going to the races. He liked to look for deer when he was out in the woods hunting and enjoyed fishing. Hanging out with friends, family and playing poker was how he liked to pass the time. His sense of humor always kept people laughing. Most of all, he especially loved to be with his son, Peyton. Treven died Sunday, February 12, 2006, at the Floyd County Hospital in Charles City, Iowa, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Henry Kielman and step-grandfather, Reid Chesnut He is survived by one son, Peyton Jeffrey Kielman, Clarksville, Iowa; his father, Jeff Kielman, Clarksville, Iowa; his mother, Brenda (Charles) Hewitt, Clarksville, Iowa; one brother, Devin Kielman, Clarksville, Iowa; one sister, Courtney Kielman (special friend, Justin Schroeder), Clarksville, Iowa; paternal grandmother, Maxine Chesnut, Clarksville, Iowa; maternal grandparents, Roger (Linda) Hirsch, Waverly, Iowa and Rosie Hirsch, Clarksville, Iowa; many aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral Services were at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 15, 2006, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville, Iowa. Officiating were Rev. Laura Hucke, Pastor Reuben Topp and Rev. Nathan Frazee. The organist was Harriet Forry, the congregational hymn was “In the Garden,” and Special Music was played “Go Rest High on the Mountain” - Vince Gill and “Free Bird” - Leonard Skynard. The casketbearers were Devin Kielman, Clint Schmadeke, Bud Hirsch, Dan Wordes, Jeff Kielman, Keith Kielman, Jerry Hovenga and Matt Nutt. The honorary casketbearers were Norman Mulder, Chuck Hewitt, Courtney Kielman, Katie Nutt, Rory Doty, Justin Schroeder, Peyton Kielman, Joe Kielman, Daniel Kramer, Clint Swick, Bubba Hirsch and Libi Chesnut. The flower committee was Anita Nutt, Tracy Hinders and Christine Schmadeke. Interment was at the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville, Iowa. Marie Henrietta Hinders, 83, of Allison, Iowa, passed away February 24, 2006, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. She was born November 29, 1922, in Butler County, Iowa to Claus and Mattie (Henrichs) Hoodjer. Marie attended Ripley Township School in Butler County. She married Charlie Hinders on February 21, 1947 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. She worked as a homemaker. She was baptized and confirmed at Ebenizer Lutheran Church in Butler Center. Marie was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Allison, Iowa. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining friends and she also collected salt and pepper shakers. Marie is survived by her son Larry Charles Hinders of Allison; daughter Linda Marie & husband Robert Mahncke of Cedar Falls; daughter Diane Kay & husband Jay Bushbaum of Hampton; daughter Karen Sue & husband Steve Cuvelier of Shell Rock. Grandchildren: Amy (Gene) Stanbrough of Parkersburg, Laura (Richard) Joyce of Chicago, Illinois, Scott (Stephanie) Cuvelier of Shell Rock, Michael (Sara) Mahncke of Cedar Falls, Stephanie Cuvelier of Missoula, Montana, Amber Bushbaum of Hampton and David Mahncke of Cedar Falls, great grandchildren: Ian & Ellah Cuvelier of Shell Rock. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband on September 20, 1988, daughter, Shirley in infancy and brother Clarence Hoodjer. Music was provided by key boardist, Mrs. Merle Hoodjer and special music by Amber Bushbaum. Marie Alice Busch

Marie Alice Busch, age 86, of Allison, Iowa, was born July 5, 1919, the daughter of Martin and Anna Rottink Folkerts in Allison, Iowa. On February 25, 1940, Marie married George Busch at her parents’ home near Allison, Iowa. Following marriage they moved to their current farm, where they lived and farmed for 65 ½ years. They enjoyed raising their purebred Angus cattle. They had four children who later joined them in the farm corporation. Marie was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed cooking and caring for her family, gardening, growing flowers, trips with her husband, George and serving in the community. She enjoyed time spent with her family and friends. Marie was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church where she was actively involved in her younger years as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, member of the Women’s Guild, Bible studies and other church activities. She also was very active in the Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, a long time 4-H leader and a member of the Know Your Neighbor Club. Marie died Sunday, February 19, 2006 at Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly, Iowa of natural causes. Marie was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Roger Stauffer; sister, Anna Kampman; brother, Folkert Folkerts, a step grandson, Russell Westendorf; and cousin, Engelena Foster. Living family members include her husband of over 65 years, George Busch of Allison, Iowa and her four children and their spouses, son Wayne (Kathleen) Busch, Allison, Iowa; son Wendell (Beverly) Busch, Cedar Falls, Iowa; son Maurice (Connie) Busch, Allison, Iowa; daughter, Lois Stauffer, Allison, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Sherri (Brian) Cramer, Debra (Randy) Reitsma, Michael Busch, Lisa (Neil) Baumhover, Eric (Nicole) Stauffer, Kim (Kevin) Schlais, Michael (Dawn) Mason, Kristen (Ryan) Fleshner; 12 great grand children; brother Richard (Jean) Folkerts of Allison, Iowa; sister-in-law Margaret Folkerts, Allison, Iowa; brother-in-law Heyo Kampman, Allison, Iowa; cousins raised as brothers and sisters, John (Jean) Johnson, Parkersburg, Iowa and Alice Foster, Lamont, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 23, 2006 at the Trinity Reformed Church, Allison, Iowa with Rev. Steve Petroelje and Pastor Keith Tomlinson officiating. Keyboardist was Dolores Hoodjer. Vocal Duet was by Joel Sult and Greta Eberline. Congregational Hymns were “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace”. Casketbearers were David Busch, Robert Busch, Duane Folkerts, Darrel Folkerts, Michael Busch and Eric Stauffer. Interment was in the Allison Cemetery.
