Lynn Michael Greenlee

Michael Greenlee, age 58, of Jefferson, Iowa, was born the son of Delmer
Dean and Valora Mardell Ball Greenlee on July 23, 1947, in Waverly,
Iowa. He graduated from Waverly High School in 1966. Lynn entered the
United States Army in 1966, and served for a year overseas in Vietnam.
He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1968. Lynn was united in
marriage with Sue Ann Burger on March 23, 1969, at the Dysart Lutheran
Church. They lived in West Waterloo for a short time after marriage,
then in Shell Rock, Iowa, for several years before making their home in
Clarksville, Iowa. Lynn worked as a machinist at John Deere in Waterloo
for 30 years, retiring in 1996. He continued to work after retiring from
John Deere, most recently he was working at Bomgaars. Lynn and Sue moved
to Jefferson, Iowa, in 1998 for family reasons. Lynn served on the
Clarksville Ambulance Crew for many years. He especially enjoyed
fishing, grilling and bowling. Lynn loved being home and spending time
with his family. Lynn died April 20, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center in
Des Moines, Iowa, from cancer related to smoking. He was preceded in
death by his parents, Delmer and Valora Greenlee, and one brother, Ron
Greenlee. Lynn is survived by: his wife, Sue Greenlee, Jefferson, Iowa;
two sons, Chris (Kara) Greenlee, Boone, Iowa, and Rian (Robin) Greenlee,
Creston, Iowa; one daughter, Sarah Greenlee, West Des Moines, Iowa; four
grandchildren, Kayla, Aaron, Casey and Camryn; one step-grandchild,
Ryan; one brother, Dale Greenlee, Des Moines, Iowa; two sisters, Dorothy
(Bob) Oldenburger and Linda (Harold) Van Hauen, both of Clarksville,
Iowa and his step-mother, Alpha Greenlee, Clarksville, Iowa. Funeral
Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at the
Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor Val Swinton
of the Chruch of Christ in Clarksville officiating. Special Music was
“Making Memories of Us” by Keith Urban; “When the Saints Go Marching In”
and the Congregational Hymn was “Amazing Grace”. Casketbearers were
Dennis Burnett, Robert Ball, Dan Bruscher, Robert Oldenburger Joe
McQuown and Bob Gilliand. Burial was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville,
Iowa with Full Military Rites provided by Clarksville Amvets Post #30.

Gladys Mae (Cook) Feldman

Funeral Services for Gladys Mae (Cook) Feldman,67, of Greene, were
held Monday, April 24, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church, Greene,
with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery
in Greene. Gladys Mae Cook was born June 7, 1938, in rural Charles City,
Floyd County, a daughter of Heddie and Blanche (Towner) Cook, and died
Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at the Floyd County Hospital, Hospice Unit,
in Charles City. She received her early education at St. Charles No. 1
rural school and graduated from Charles City High School in 1957. As a
young lady she was employed as a bookkeeper at the Lindemere Dairy in
Charles City. Gladys was united in marriage to Wayne Vinton Feldman on
January 17, 1960 at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene. To this
union were blessed two sons. For several years Gladys was employed at
the Greene Community School working in the kitchen. Since 1979, Gladys
has been employed at the First State Bank, now Lincoln Savings Bank in
Greene where she retired this spring. Gladys loved spending time with
family and friends. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart.
She took pleasure in her flowers, gardening and bird watching. Gladys
enjoyed going to craft shows, shopping, playing cards, and bowling. Her
interests included watching sporting events and traveling. Gladys was a
faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene where she was
a member of the Evening Circle. Living family members include two sons:
Michael (Sherry) Feldman, Urbandale, Douglas (Kristi) Feldman, Greene,
one granddaughter: Liberty Rose Feldman, Greene, one grandson: Vinton
Allen Feldman, Greene; two brothers: Roger Cook, Alamo, TX, Robert
(Karen) Cook, Charles City. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Wayne, March 26, 2005, her parents, one sister: Ruth Koenigsfeld; infant
twin grandsons: Nile and Noah Feldman. Those planning an expression of

Dorothy Evelyn Karsjens

Dorothy Evelyn Karsjens, age 84, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the
daughter of Harm, Jr. and Emma Allspach Kramer on October 7, 1921, on a
farm in rural Aplington, Iowa. She received her education at a country
school near her home. Dorothy was united in marriage with Edward William
Karsjens on June 28, 1939, in the First Reformed Church Parsonage in
Aplington, Iowa. The couple farmed southwest of Aplington for three
years, and then near Stout. They moved to Sinclair in 1952. Dorothy was
a stay at home farm wife, during this time. They moved to Parkersburg in
January, 1959. Dorothy later worked as a housekeeper at University of
Northern Iowa and was a bookkeeper for Kenny Johnson and Kenny Luhring.
Dorothy was a member of Parkersburg Christian Reformed Church. She
volunteered at the Senior Center in Parkersburg and was a member of a
card club with women who got together every Monday. Dorothy liked to
collect birdhouses and salt and pepper shakers. She was extremely fond
of roses. She enjoyed sewing, playing the organ and loved caring for her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothy died Tuesday, April 18,
2006 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, Iowa, of
complications of cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Edward Karsjens in 1969; her parents and one grandson, Brent Bergman.
Dorothy is survived by four children, Mary Ann (Don) Bergman,
Parkersburg, Iowa; Clarence (June) Karsjens, Parkersburg, Iowa; Alma
(Greg) Raber, Parkersburg, Iowa and Yvonne (Bill) Keller, Dike, Iowa;
eleven grandchildren, Susan (Jim) Schooley, Cary (Hallie) Bergman, Clint
Bergman, Jill (Daniel) Olson; Michele Karsjens and Kent (Jeannie)
Karsjens; Alecia Raber, Kristi Dennis; Carrie Meester, Lindsey Keller,
Josh Keller; seven great-grandchildren, Tyler, Desiree, Marc, Sonja,
Cole, Derrick and Jacob; three step-great-grandchildren, Aaron, Josh and
Karissa; and one sister, Ruth Mennen, Cedar Falls, Iowa. Funeral
Services were held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 21, 2006 at the
Christian Reformed Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Pastor Frank Pott
officiating. Organist was Janet Johnson. Vocalist Charlene Kramer sang
“Each Step I Take” and “One Day at a Time” Congregational Hymns were
“Amazing Grace” and “When the Roll is Called Up Yonder”. Casketbearers
were Cary Bergman, Clint Bergman, Kent Karsjens, Josh Keller, Sidney
Mennen and Cole Dennis. Honorary Casketbearers were Kenny Johnson and
Kenny Luhring. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa.

Vivian Irene Wildeboer, 78, of Allison, Iowa, passed away April 21,
2006 at the Allison Health Care Center in Allison. She was born on March
29, 1928, in White, South Dakota, to Theodore and Ethel (Franken)
Winkowitsch. Vivian attended rural country schools in South Dakota. She
was married to Phillip Wildeboer on October 5, 1958, in Nashua, Iowa.
Vivian worked as a CNA at the Allison Health Care Center in Allison for
32 years. She was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church in Allison and
also a member of the Cedar Valley Engine Club. She enjoyed baking,
flowers and her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter Connie
and husband Jeff Gortmaker of Monroe, South Dakota, son Randy Wildeboer
of Allison, son Wayne Winkowitsch of Waterloo; granddaughter Chasity
Wildeboer & fiancé Josh Symens of Aredale, granddaughter Chelsy
Wildeboer of Allison, granddaughter Randie Wildeboer of Witchita,
Kansas, grandson Taran Sherburne of Waverly; sister Mamie & husband Paul
Rottink of Allison, brother Jim & wife Sylvia Winkowitsch of Bristow,
brother Donald & wife Irene Winkowitsch of Allison, brother Sheldon &
wife Darlene Winkowitsch of Hampton, sister Beverly & husband Robert
Boyd of Florida, brother Clifford & wife Lila Winkowitsch of Dumont,
sister Janet & husband Don Bangs of Allison, Iowa. She was preceded in
death by her parents, husband and two brothers, Ted and Russell and one
sister Donna Ostendorf. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m.,
Monday, April 24, 2006 at the Trinity Reformed Church in Allison with
Rev. Steve Petroelje officiating. Special music was provided by key
boardist Greta Cordes accompanying special music Kendall Obmeier.
Pallbearers were Ted Miller, Daniel Dralle, Diane Kampman, Eugene
Ostendorf, Danny Winkowitsch and Tim Winkowitsch. Final resting place
was in the Allison Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge
of arrangements.

Marilyn Joyce Bolin, age 69, of Clarksville, Iowa, was
born December 28, 1936, the daughter of Elmer and Helma
Heidbrink Franke in LaMars, Iowa. She received her
education and graduated from Ireton High School. Marilyn
was united in marriage with Craig Bolin on December 30,
1965 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The couple first lived in
Cedar Falls, Iowa then moved to Craig’s grandparent’s
farm southeast of Clarksville. Marilyn was a secretary
then postal clerk for the U.S. Post Office for 30 years
and six months. Marilyn was a member of the Black Hawk
Universal Unitarian Society. She had a gift of writing
which included her poetry which she shared with many of
her friends and family. Marilyn loved to travel with her
family. Among her many talents, she taught herself to
use the computer and enjoyed baking, crafting and being
a homemaker. Marilyn very much enjoyed spending time
with her grandchildren and family. Marilyn died Monday,
April 24, 2006, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home in
Waterloo, Iowa, of Lymphoma cancer. She was preceded in
death by her parents, Elmer and Helma Franke and one
brother, Daryl Franke. Marilyn is survived by her
husband of 40 years, Craig Bolin, Clarksville, Iowa; two
sons, Paul (Linda) Bolin, Commerce, Georgia and Benjamin
(Stacy) Bolin, Kansas City, Missouri; three
granddaughters, Chandra, Lydia and Sophia Bolin; one
brother, Dean (Janet) Franke, Lake Havasu, Arizona; and
two sisters, Marjorie Franke, LaMars, Iowa and Marlys
(Gaylord) Klessig, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Funeral
Services were at 1:30 p.m., Friday, April 28, 2006, at
the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville, Iowa.
Officiating the services was Pastor Anne Sunday. The
Organist was Lola Clark. The Congregational Hymns were
“In the Garden” and “How Great Thou Art.” The Violist
Ute Brandenburg was accompanied by Carolyn Hildebrandt
and they played “Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring” and
Postalude Music. The Casketbearers were Cecil Krull,
Roger Jacobs, Jim Fails, Rick Schipper, Quinton Franke
and Jack Savage. The Honorary Casketbearers were Juanita
Williams and Dennis Harbaugh. Interment was at the
Lowell Cemetery, rural Clarksville, Iowa.

Funeral services for Ruth Mae Viers, 90, formerly of 407 ½ Courtland
Street, Greene will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2006 at Reid’s
Funeral Chapel, 519 North First Street, Greene, with Rev. Ashok Patet
and Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the Rose
Hill Cemetery in Greene. Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday,
May 2, 2006, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel and will continue Wednesday one
hour before services. Ruth Mae Viers was born April 6, 1916 in rural
Greene a daughter of Archie and Cora (Skillen) Raymond and died
Saturday, April 29, 2006 at the Health Care Center in Allison. On July
12, 1934, she was united in marriage to Eugene Robert Viers in Charles
City. They made their home in the Greene area their entire marriage and
to this union were born four sons: Jim, Kenneth, Robert, and Dennis.
They worked for D. C. Marsh and other farmers in the Greene area for
many years. Ruth assisted her husband as sexton for the Rose Hill
Cemetery in Greene for 20 years. Ruth enjoyed going fishing with her
husband, children, and grandchildren. She was a homemaker that provided
for her families needs by gardening and canning. Those thankful for
having shared her life include her son: Jim (Jo) Viers of Rockwell City,
three daughters-in-law: Joan Viers of Charles City, Ruth Viers of
Waterloo, Judy Viers of Greene; 11 grandchildren: Jim (Donna) Viers of
Rolfe, Carmen Smith of Rockwell City, Carol (Paul) Rice) of Ft. Dodge,
John (Val) Viers of Plainview, NE, Donna Jo (Richard) Marvel of
Westminster, CO, Darren Viers of Charles City, Nancy Simmons and Lisa
Marie Viers both of Waterloo, Dale Dean Viers of Ft. Madison, Debra
Viers of Greene, Michelle (Shane) Ott of Offott Air Force Base, NE; 27

Sherman “Sherm” Frey

Sherman “Sherm” Frey, age 81, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of
Joe and Lena (Frerichs) Frey on January 5, 1925, on a farm southeast of
Aplington, Iowa. He graduated from the Aplington High School in 1943.
Sherm was united in marriage with Virginia Verly on January 2, 1948, at
the First Reformed Church in Aplington. They made their home on his
family farm until the spring of 1975 when they moved to their home in
Aplington. Sherm was an active member of the First Reformed Church in
Aplington, where he was a Sunday School and Catechism teacher for many
years, he served on the Consistory, he sang in the choir, was a layman
pastor and also sang with the mixed quartet, which is now again complete
in Heaven. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and stained glass work as
hobbies. He also loved spending time with his family. Sherm and Virginia
spent their summers together at the cabin in Canada, until Sherm’s
health prevented them from going. At the beginning of April this year,
Sherm fought with a virus. He had fluid build up and spent some time in
the hospital, but once again he recovered. At that time Virginia moved
to assisted living and Sherm was put in skilled nursing at Maple Manor,
until last Monday evening. Sherman Frey went home to be with the Lord
April 24, 2006, at 6:05 p.m. He died at the Maple Manor Village in
Aplington of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents;
two brothers, John and Harold; two sisters, Clara Johnson and Marion
Janssen; one infant grandson, Jeffrey Frey; and one infant great
granddaughter, Elizabeth Marks. Sherm is survived by his wife of 58
years, Virginia of Aplington; one daughter, Jo (Red) Dreesman of
Parkersburg, Iowa; two sons, Joel (Joyce) Frey of Allison, Iowa and Paul
(Kate) Frey of Sacramento, California; eight grandchildren; thirteen
great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and many
nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral Services were at 1:30 p.m.,
Saturday, April 29, 2006, at the First Reformed Church in Aplington,
Iowa. Officiating the services was Rev. Harlan DeJong. The Organist was
Lois Wessels. The Vocalists Joel Frey sang “I’m Just a Sinner Saved by
Grace.” The vocal group Infinite who are Janis Marks, Janelle Martin &
Jennifer Hoins sang “How Deep the Fathers Love” and “My Jesus I Love
Thee.” The Congregational Hymns were “Amazing Grace” and “Be Still My
Soul.” The Honorary Casketbearers were “His Granddaughters” Rebecca
Frey, Amanda Frey, Janis Marks, Janelle Martin, Elizabeth Pruisner,
Jennifer Hoins and Heather Pruisner. The Casketbearers were “His
Grandsons” Todd Pruisner, Chad Pruisner, Jonathan Frey, Tonee Martin,
Trent Hoins and Martin Marks. The Flower Committee was Millie Ridder and
Muriel Dix. Interment was at the Pleasant View Cemetery, rural,

Jacobus Hemmen, 89, of Dike, died on Sunday, April 23, 2006 at Maple
Manor Care Center in Aplington, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 10:00
A.M., Thursday, April 27, 2006 at The Reformed Church of Stout with
Pastor David Powers, officiating. Burial will follow at the Stout
Cemetery in Stout. Military rites provided by American Legion Post #471

January 11, 1917, at home in Aplington, Iowa, son of Hayo and Fannie (Karsjens)
Hemmen. Jacobus grew up and was raised in the Aplington area. On January
8, 1946 he was united in marriage to Esther Ethel Meester. After their
marriage the couple moved to the Dike area and farmed there. Esther
passed away on April 24, 1986. Jacobus was a member of the Reformed
Church of Stout where he served as an elder, on the consistory, a youth
advisor and on the Men’s Brotherhood. Jacobus had a personal
relationship with the Lord and enjoyed fellowship with other Christians.
Jacobus really enjoyed spending time with his kids, grandchildren and
great grandchildren. He liked to travel and fish. Surviving are his
children: Norma and husband Don Adams of Dike, Iowa, Delbert and wife
Sandy Hemmen of Dike, Iowa, Nancy and husband Ray Hemmer of Cedar Falls,
Iowa, Noreen and husband Darrel Folkerts of Allison, Iowa, Denise and
husband Gary Abbas of Allison, Iowa, and Debra and husband John Scott of
Marion, Iowa; 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He is
preceded in death by his wife: Esther; a granddaughter: Nicole Thorne;
parents: Heyo and Fannie Hemmen; 2 brothers: Herman and Bill Hemmen.
Bertha Lena Abkes

Bertha Lena Abkes, age 101, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter
of Louis and Emma (Nelson) Christopherson on October 4, 1904, in
Wheaton, Minnesota. As a young child her father died and the family
moved to Parkersburg. She received her education at the Parkersburg High
School and graduated in 1923. Bertha was united in marriage with Joseph
Abkes on August 3, 1937, in Clinton, Iowa. They lived in Parkersburg
their entire married life. Bertha worked at Christensen’s Café in
downtown Parkersburg for many years. She was a member of the Christian
Reformed Church in Parkersburg. She enjoyed playing cards with friends
and liked to go shopping. Her house was always open to company and
Bertha looked forward to their next visit. Bertha died Thursday
afternoon, April 27, 2006, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo,
Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe
Abkes in 1986; her parents; two sisters, Anna Yost and Ida Dailey; and
two brothers, Lawrence and Harvey. Bertha is survived by one son,
Leonard Abkes of Parkersburg, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral
Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, May 1, 2006 at the Christian
Reformed Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. George McGuire officiating.
Organist was Janet Johnson. Vocalist Marsha Allspach sang “In the
Garden”. Congregational Hymns were “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing

Brocka

Marietta Brocka, 64, of Aredale, Iowa, passed away April
26, 2006, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit,
Mason City, Iowa. Marietta was born November 21, 1941,
in Sheffield, Iowa, to Clarence Frank and Nellie
(Vaughn) Emhoff. She attended schools in Sheffield and
Hansell. She was married to Gordon Brocka on July 19,
1958, in Aredale, Iowa. She worked as a sales clerk for
Damons Department Store and was a North Iowa Hospice
Volunteer. She was a member of the Faith Baptist Church
of Hampton. She loved fishing, gardening and working
with her flowers. She was the 2004 Hospice volunteer of
the year. She was also an avid pet lover. She is
survived by her husband Gordon Brocka of Aredale,
daughter Teresa and husband Dan Peterson of Dumont, son
Stacy and wife Cami Brocka of Urbandale, sister LaVaughn
Uhlenhopp of Mason City, sister Donna Mehlberg of
LaMirada, California, brother Clarence Jr. “Sonny” and
wife Marge Emhoff of Mason City; eight grandchildren:
Todd and wife Amber Peterson of Center Point, Jesse and
wife Katie Peterson of Pella, Lisa and husband Bryan
Heilskov of Hampton, Anna Peterson and Ashley Peterson
of Dumont, Nicholas Brocka, Oliva Brocka and Sadie
Brocka of Urbandale; seven great-grandchildren: Taylor,

Marietta was preceded in death by her parents, son Todd
Brian, daughter Engela, sister Dolores Jane Norris,
brothers-in-law Allen Uhlenhopp, Jerry Norris and Ted
Mehlberg, step-father Corado Giofreddi and step-mother
Joyce Emhoff. Gordon and Marietta have a special
relationship with Hillcrest Family Services as adoptive
parents. They are requesting that in lieu of flowers
that memorials be made to Hillcrest Family Services,
2005 Ashury Rd., Dubuque, Iowa 52001. Funeral services
were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 29, 2006 at
Faith Baptist Church in Hampton with Rev. David M.
Koenigsberg officiating. Special music was provided by
pianist Rosemary Koenigsberg accompanying soloist Deb
Lukensmeyer. Pallbearers were Todd Peterson, Jesse
Peterson, Bryan Heilskov, Mark Uhlenhopp, Taylor
Peterson and Nicholas Brocka. Honorary pallbearers were
Braydon Peterson, James Peterson, Issac Heilskov and
Carter Heilskov. Final resting place was in the Dumont
Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of
arrangements.

Harley Dallas Hartman, age 83, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of
Adolph and Dena (Feldman) Hartman on June 28, 1922, in rural Allison,
Iowa. He received his education from rural country schools near Allison
and also Pleasant Valley #2 in rural Grundy County. Harley served in the
Army Air Force from February 21, 1943, until honorably discharged on
September 9, 1945. He was a Gunner and Engineer on a B-24 in the 8th Air
Force on 31 missions over Germany during World War II. Harley was united
in marriage with Lois Meyer on December 2, 1943, at her parents’ home in
Aplington, Iowa. They made their home and farmed north of Aplington
until 1949. They moved to Buck Grove and Harley became a Rural Mail
Carrier in 1955 and served on the Rural Mail Carrier Board during this
time. They moved to Parkersburg in 1956, where Harley became the
Postmaster in 1973. During this time he was on the City Council and was
the Parkersburg Mayor for a total of 29 years. Following his retirement
he delivered RV’s for Winnebago for about five years. Harley was an
active member of the Hope Reformed Church in Parkersburg. He was a
member of the Parkersburg American Legion, Aplington AMVETS, the
Parkersburg Civic Center and was the Director of the Veteran’s Affairs
for Butler County for many years. He enjoyed reading and his family was
very proud of him for being self educated. He enjoyed his family
activities and especially enjoyed his grandchildren. Harley died
Saturday, May 6, 2006, at the Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington,
Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by a
great-granddaughter, Rebekah Leigh Goranson; his parents; and two
brothers, his twin brother, Willard, and Lawrence Hartman. Harley is
survived by his wife of 62 years, Lois Hartman of Parkersburg, Iowa; one
son, Jimmy (Gail) Hartman of Lenox, Iowa; two daughters, Nadene (Lee)
Heine of Hillsboro, Wisconsin and Burnadette (David) Nadler of Des
Moines, Iowa; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister,
Lois Meyer of Aplington, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Hattie Hartman of
Aplington, Iowa and Katherine Hartman of Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral
Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at the Hope
Reformed Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Neal Ooms officiating.
Organist Cathy Myers accompanied Congregational Hymns “To God Be the
Glory” and “Trust and Obey”. Vocalist Lois Fisher sang “O Holy City” and
“Amazing Grace” Honorary Casketbearers were Megan (Hartman) Heesch,

Owen Dean Reints

Owen Dean Reints, age 46, of Mendota, Illinois, was born the son of
Leonard and Darlene Fenneman Reints on May 4, 1959. He was baptized and
confirmed at the First United Church of Christ, Pleasant Valley, rural
Clarksville, Iowa. He received his education and graduated from
Plainfield High School in 1977. In 1987 he completed the Hawkeye Tech
Truck Driving School. Owen was united in marriage with Terry Modesitt on
January 6, 1984, in her home in Onawa, Illinois. He hauled bulk milk for
four years into Minerz Creamery in Fredericksburg, Iowa. He drove semi
truck for Poole and then Schneider Trucking. Owen lacked a few thousand
miles of having his second million mile accident-free record. Owen’s
family was baptized and became members of the First Assembly of God
Church in Mendota on September 25, 2005. He loved to go hunting, fishing
and camping. Owen died Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at home in rural Mendota,
Illinois. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Datert and Lelah
Reints and Edmund Fenneman; an uncle, Galen Fenneman; and a cousin, Kim
Whitmire. Owen is survived by his wife, Terry Reints of Mendota,
Illinois; three daughters, Jessica, Julie and Jillian, all at home; his
parents, Leonard and Darlene Reints of Plainfield, Iowa; two sisters,
Susan (Mike) Fiske of Kenmare, North Dakota and Jane (Jerry) Halbert of
Woodbury, Minnesota; grandmother, Lucille Fenneman of Clarksville, Iowa;
and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral Services were held at 10:30
a.m. Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at the United Church of Christ Pleasant
Valley, rural Clarksville, Iowa with Rev. Anne Sunday officiating.

Frank Minert Oldenburger

Frank Minert Oldenburger, age 67, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born on May
28, 1938, in Iowa City, Iowa and was adopted as an infant by Henry and
Foska “Kate” (Karsjens) Oldenburger He received his education from the
Parkersburg High School and graduated in 1957. He lived on the farm
north of Parkersburg, until 1965 when he moved to town. Frank worked at
Van Raden in Kesley where he painted. For a time he stayed home to take
care of his father due to an illness, until he passed away. He began
working at the Grundy County Hospital in Grundy Center, Iowa as a
Maintenance worker, until he was later layed off. For the next 20 years
he had a daily newspaper route with the Waterloo Courier that he
delivered. In his earlier years he enjoyed showing beef cattle with the
FFA. Frank loved listening to Christian and Country music. During
football and basketball games you could find him running the clock which
he enjoyed doing for many years. He also enjoyed the family
get-togethers and activities they shared. Frank died Thursday, May 4,
2006, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural
causes. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Fred
and William Oldenburger. Frank is survived by three sisters, Gertie
Mason of Aplington, Iowa, Henrietta Hansen of Grundy Center, Iowa and
Minnie Oldenburger of Parkersburg, Iowa. Funeral Services were he 1:30
p.m., Monday, May 8, 2006 at the Christian Reformed Church, Parkersburg,
Iowa with Rev. Frank Pott officiating. Organist was Janet Johnson.

Betty I. Jordan Durand, 88, of Waverly, Iowa, died on May 8, 2006, at
the Waverly Health Center of natural causes. Betty was born on April 25,
1918, in rural Butler County, Iowa, the daughter of John and Augusta (DeBuhr)
Backer. In 1935, Betty was united in marriage to Ray Jordan in Galena,
Illinois. The couple lived in Clarksville, Iowa, until moving to Waverly
in 1941 where Betty worked for Bremer Packing and then Carnation from
1960 until 1975. Ray died in 1974. Betty was married to Floyd Durand in
1976, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly. The couple made their
home in Waverly. Floyd passed away in 1987 and Betty continued to live
in Waverly. Betty was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in
Waverly where she was involved in many volunteer activities and the 1918
Club. She also volunteered in many capacities at Bartels Lutheran
Retirement Community in Waverly. Betty enjoyed quilting and donated many
of her creations to charity. Betty is survived by one son and his
spouse, Beryl and Susan Jordan of Waverly; two daughters, Mary Kluiter
and her spouse, Richard, of Waverly, and Sylvia Schrage of Waverly; six
grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two brothers and their spouses,
John and Ethel Backer of Greene, Iowa and Donald and Evelyn Backer of
Waterloo, Iowa; one sister, Gladys Blunt of Charles City, Iowa; and one
sister-in-law, Bessie Backer of Clarksville, Iowa. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Ray; her second husband, Floyd; three brothers,
Paul Backer, Harry Backer, and August Backer; and one sister, Grace
Ackerman. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, May 8,
2006, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly. Burial will be held at
Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until

Duane Franklin Wikert

Duane Franklin Wikert, age 74, son of Frank and Viola (Fischer) Wikert,
was born in Abbott, Iowa on August 15, 1931. He received his education
from Hazel Green Country School near his home. Duane served in the Army
National Guard in 1953, in Iowa Falls, Iowa. Duane was united in
marriage with Maxine “Mickey” Hartley on July 23, 1950, at St. John’s
United Church of Christ parsonage in Ackley, Iowa by Rev. Frank Kroll.
They made their home in Aplington, Iowa for the past 32 years. Duane
retired at the age of 62 after driving semi for 20 years for O’s Gold
(now known as, AS Grow) Seed Company. Duane was a life long member of
the Aplington American Legion. He enjoyed the outdoors and doing
anything from hunting, fishing, gardening, hunting for mushrooms among
others. He loved spending time with his family and always enjoyed his
grandchildren. Duane died Thursday, May 4, 2006, at the Presbyterian
Village in Ackley, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; one
son, Terry in 1978; two sisters-in-law; and three brothers-in-law. Duane
is survived by his wife, Maxine of Aplington, Iowa; three sons, Michael
Wikert of Shell Rock, Iowa, Randall Wikert of Huntsville, Texas, and
Wade Wikert of San Diego, California; one daughter, Michelle (Keith)
Schipper of Austinville, Iowa; six grandchildren, Matthew (Kori) Wikert,

Robert “Bob” Hayner

Robert “Bob” Hayner, 78, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away May 5, 2006, at
the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus in Mason City, Iowa. Bob
was born March 30, 1928, in Sheffield, Iowa, to Sydney and Clara
(Wilson) Hayner. He attended schools in Adel. Bob and Jeanette Folkerds
were married on August 1, 1949, in Hampton, Iowa. Bob worked for more
than 25 years at Maytag. Bob served his country in both the Air Force
from October, 1945 to November 1948, and the Army Reserves from May,
1951 to May, 1954. He belonged to the Dumont American Legion Post 360.
He had an affiliation with the New Hope United Methodist Church in
Dumont. He enjoyed fishing, riding his bicycle, country music and
playing the lotto. He enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren
and the rest of his family. He also enjoyed making jellies, canning
pears and going for long walks. Bob is survived by his wife Jeanette
Hayner of Dumont; son Gene Hayner of Dumont, daughter Sharon and husband
Larry Gibson, Sr. of Des Moines, son Dale Hayner of Dumont, daughter
Susan Hayner of Dumont, son Steven Hayner of Hubbard, daughter Mary and
husband Rick Adams of Hubbard, son Mike Hayner and fiancé Allison Fisher
of Charles City; brother Gerald and wife Beverly Hayner of Des Moines,
sisters-in-law Kathryn Richards and Tillie McGrean and brother-in-law
LaVern Folkerds. He is also survived by nine grandchildren Larry Jr.,
James, Matt, Michael Jr., Lynn, Mindy, Brandi, Ashley and Nick; seven
great grandchildren Katelyn, Kaydence, Leah, Coletan, Austin, Dacoda and
Kyle. He was preceded in death by his parents Sydney and Clara Hayner,
brothers Donald, Keith and Buck, sisters Edith and Clara. Funeral
services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at the New Hope
United Methodist Church in Dumont with Rev. Terra Amundson officiating.

Vera A. Hurst

Vera A. Hurst, of New Hartford, Iowa, died Wednesday morning, May 10,
2006, at the Allison Health Care Center, Allison, Iowa. She was born on
June 16, 1911 near Mt. Ayr, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Inez
(Marshall) Casady. She graduated from high school in Park Rapids,
Minnesota, and then went to work for the Tuberculosis Sanitarium in
Walker, Minnesota. It was while working at the sanitarium that she met
her future husband, Clarence Hurst, and the couple was united in
marriage on August 9, 1933, in Park Rapids. In 1937 they moved to Iowa
and settled in Cedar Falls. In 1955 they moved to New Hartford and over
the next years Vera and Clarence together ran a Malt Shoppe, bakery and
later the Benson General Store. In 1995 the couple moved to the Allison
Care Center where Clarence died on November 10, 1998. Vera was a member
of the First Baptist Church, New Hartford, where she had taught Sunday
school and played the organ. She was a very talented musician, playing
organ, piano and flute. She also enjoyed crocheting, emrboidering and
raising her garden. Vera was a great hostess and on the holidays she
would hold the family dinners after which they would gather around the
piano and sing for hours. She was a jack-of-all trades and could even
shingle the roof. She is survived by her three daughters, Betty (Ray)
Ackerson of New Hartford, Elaine Kelsey of Akeley, Minnesota, Ardy
(Dean) Avenson of Cedar Falls; two sons, Donald (Erika) Hurst of Cedar
Falls and Harold (Irene) Hurst who are fulltime RV’ers. She is also
survived by 10 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and 21 great-great
grandchildren, one sister, Grace Messer of Henning, Minnesota, and one
brother, Allen Casady of Waverly, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband, Clarence; one son-in-law, Franklin Kelsey; three
granddaughters, and two sisters, Babe Thiel and Alta Messer. Funeral
services were held Saturday, May13, 2006, at the First Baptist Church,
New Hartford, with Pastor Ben Epley officiating. Burial was in the Oak

Kay Johnson, age 67, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born May 24, 1938, the
daughter of Albert John and Amelia Bauman Reents in Waterloo, Iowa. She
received her education and graduated from Shell Rock High School. Thea
was united in marriage with Edward (Eddy) Johnson on October 17, 1987.
She lived all of her adult life in Clarksville. She was a member of St.
John Lutheran Church. Thea worked two years at the Allison nursing home
and 24 years at Community Nursing Home in Clarksville. She also worked
part time at Pete and Shorty’s in Clarksville. Thea was well known for
her potato salad. Thea had a special collection of bells. She enjoyed
reading and liked her birds and flowers, especially the sunflowers.
Going to the river was something she also very much enjoyed. Most of
all, her grandchildren and family were very special to her. Thea died
Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of natural
causes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Amelia
Reents and one brother in infancy. Thea is survived by her husband, Eddy
Johnson, Clarksville, Iowa; three sons, Jay (Connie) Green, Clarksville,
Iowa; Kurt (Laura) Green, Clarksville, Iowa and Jeremiah (Kris) Johnson,
Parkersburg, Iowa; and one daughter, Sara (Ted) Ferch, Clarksville,
Iowa; sixteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral
Services were held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 12, 2006 at St. John
Lutheran Church, Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor David Nelson officiating.

Rachel Johnson, 77, of Lake City, Iowa, died Friday, April 28, 2006, at
her home. A daughter of Walter and Ida (Lauterbach) Porter, she was born
April 4, 1928, at Reinbeck, graduated from Reinbeck High School and
attended Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern
Iowa, in Cedar Falls. She married Wendell Johnson September 7, 1948.
Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and community volunteer. Her husband was a
teacher and high school principal at Woodward from 1950-54, high school
principal at Clarksville from 1954-60, high school principal for two
years and superintendent for 15 years in Lake City from 1960-77 and
superintendent at Cardinal (Eldon) School District from 1977-88. He then
returned to Lake City. Mrs. Johnson’s memberships included PEO, American
Legion Auxiliary, Stewart Memorial Community Hospital Auxiliary, Calhoun
County Federation of Women’s Clubs, Lioness Club of Eldon, Lake City
Library Board of Trustees, Monday Club and Lake City Betterment
Association. Survivors include her mother, Ida Porter, of Lake City, 100
years old; a daughter, Dr. Susan Johnson and Ann Rhomberg of Iowa City;
three sons: Kirk Johnson and his wife Anne, of Bozeman, Montana; Mark
Johnson and his wife, Jan, of West Des Moines, and Brian Johnson and his
wife, DeeAnn, of Glenwood, Minnesota; and ten grandchildren. Mrs.
Johnson was preceded in death by her father, and her husband, Wendell,
on April 8, 1997. Funeral services were held on May 2, 2006, at Union
Church in Lake City with the Rev. Betty Weidert officiating. Burial was
in the Lake City Cemetery. Lampe Funeral Home in Lake City was in charge

Noma Fern Waugh

Noma Fern Waugh, age 89, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born April 5, 1917,
the daughter of Ferdinand H. and May Edith Sadler Sinram in Clarksville,
Iowa. She received her education and graduated from Clarksville High
School in 1935. She attended Iowa Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls for
one year. Noma was united in marriage with Richard F. “Dick” Waugh on
December 16, 1939, at the Presbyterian Church in Waterloo, Iowa. They
built their first home in Clarksville where they lived their entire
married life. Noma was a homemaker although she worked briefly in the
Butler County Assessor’s office in the 1960’s. Noma was a member of the
Community United Methodist Church, the church Women’s Group and the
Eastern Star in Clarksville. She also belonged to the Clarksville
Federated Woman’s Club and the Women’s Bridge Club. Noma enjoyed
spending time gardening, painting figurines and wooden ducks. A
highlight was an Amtrak train trip to Washington and Oregon for their
50th Wedding Anniversary. She loved her family and enjoyed celebrating
birthdays and Christmas with them. Time spent with her grandchildren was
very special to her. Noma died Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at Community
Nursing Home, Clarksville, of natural causes. She was preceded in death
by her husband of 65 years, Richard Waugh on February 21, 2005; her
parents and one sister, Edna Stafford. Noma is survived by one son, Mark
R. Waugh, Newark, Ohio; one daughter, Susan (Ron) Paulsen, Waverly,
Iowa; six grandchildren, Jane (Jim) Reynolds, John Paulsen, Teri Waugh,
Michelle (Steve) Waugh Brinkley, Natalie Waugh and Ashley Waugh; eight
great-grandchildren, Ben, John, Michael, William, Katelyn Reynolds,
Conner, Isabella Paulsen and Anna Brinkley; and one brother-in-law, Emil
Draves, Webster City, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m.,

Jennie Oldenburger, age 98, of Aplington, Iowa, was born November 19,
1907, the daughter of Joe and Grace Bronsema Kettwig near Allison in
Butler County, Iowa. She received her education at Monroe #6 Country
School. Before her marriage, Jennie was a waitress at Dillen’s Café,
then she was a clerk at Van’s Variety Store and at Ross’ Hardware Store.
She later was in partnership in Jen & Lid’s Grocery with Lydia Bausman.
Jennie was united in marriage with George Oldenburger on December 1,
1954, by Rev. Reents in the parsonage of the Lutheran Church in Sibley,
Iowa. After their marriage, the couple farmed in the Pleasant Valley
area in Grundy County. Jennie and George moved to town in Aplington in
March, 1977. Jennie was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in
Parkersburg, where she served as Sunday School Treasurer. She enjoyed
working on scrapbooks and playing bingo. Her fishing trips to Minnesota
were something she looked forward to. She liked to eat out and spend
time playing cards with the neighbor ladies. Most of all, she enjoyed
visits from her family and friends. Jennie died Tuesday, May 16, 2006,
at Maple Manor Care Center, Aplington, Iowa, of natural causes. She was
preceded in death by her husband, George Oldenburger on October 3, 1983;
her parents; three sisters, Minnie Dring, her twin sister, Lydia Etjen
and Grace Schultz; and one brother, Bruno Kettwig. Jennie is survived by
one sister, Wilma (Abel) Schrage of Shell Rock, Iowa; one sister-in-law,
Helen Alberts of Allison, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Bill (Ann)
Oldenburger of Aplington; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral
Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 19, 2006 at the Bethel
Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Paul Schaedig

Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg,

Harold James Van Hauen

Harold James Van Hauen, age 59, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son
of Harvey and Elisabeth Lauterbach Van Hauen on March 9, 1947, in
Waverly, Iowa. He was baptized into the Christian faith on May 4, 1947,
and later confirmed on March 26, 1961. Harold received his education at
a rural country school near his home and later graduated from the
Waverly-Shell Rock High School in 1965. He served in the United States
Army Reserve from 1965 through 1971. He served on active duty for six
months, in communications, during the Vietnam War. Harold was united in
marriage with Esther Johnson in 1968. Harold and Esther had two
children, Cindy and Gregory. They were later divorced. He married Betty
Bolin-Ohlendorf on June 9, 1976. Betty died in 1990. Harold married
Linda Greenlee on May 4, 1991, at the St. John Lutheran Church in
Clarksville, Iowa. Harold began working as a farmer in the Clarksville
and Shell Rock areas. He then became a semi-truck driver, and drove for
Dieke Implement in Waverly for 12 years, and later Seegers for a short
time. Harold had driven semi-truck for Unverferth Manufacturing Company
in Shell Rock, Iowa. He worked in the Unverferth factory for a year and
a half until he retired in August of 2005, due to cancer. Harold was a
member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville. Harold died on
Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at his home in Clarksville, when he lost his
fight with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and
Elisabeth Van Hauen, second wife, Betty Van Hauen and a step-son, Thomas
Santee. Harold is survived by his wife, Linda Van Hauen of Clarksville,
Iowa; one son, Gregory (Angela) Van Hauen of Janesville, Minnesota; one
daughter, Cindy (Rick) Henniger of Allison, Iowa; one step-son, Dean
(Diane) Jepsen of Clarksville, Iowa; two step-daughters, Valerie (Troy)
Hinders Fraser of Clarksville, Iowa and Joanne Jepsen of Clarksville,
Iowa; three grandchildren, Cassie Henniger, and Ashley and Anna Van
Hauen; 12 step-grandchildren: Steve, Ashley, Tori, Tyler, Carly; and
Trey, Steven, Kayla, Kristen and Kaitlynn; and Nicolas and Derek; one
brother, Darwin Van Hauen of Marshalltown, Iowa; and one sister,
Elisabeth (Larry) Clark of Clarksville, Iowa. Funeral Services were held
at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, May 20, 2006, at St. John Lutheran Church in
Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor David Nelson officiating. Organist was Deb
Knudson. Special Prelude was “Wind Beneath My Wings”. Congregational
Hymns were “I’ll Fly Away” and “How Great Thou Art”. Casketbearers were
Todd Doty, Russell Doty, Dan Doty, Scott Melohn, Nathan Oldenburger and
Dennis Endelman. Burial Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa with
Military Rites conducted by Clarksville AMVET Post # 30. Redman-Schwartz
Funeral Home, Clarksville, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may
be directed to the family.
