MILLER

Dale Charles Miller, age 85, of Shell Rock Healthcare Center, Shell Rock, Iowa, formerly of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son of Ira and Emma (Seemann) Miller on April 21, 1921 near Waverly in Bremer County. He received his education from rural country schools in Butler and Bremer Counties. Early in his life he did farm work for various farmers. Through the years he worked at the Norton’s Sawmill eastside of Clarksville, he delivered coal, and was a day laborer for various businesses in town, but primarily he worked as a farm hand. Dale enjoyed helping people in need and was known for his Ford tractor. Dale died on Friday, November 3, 2006, at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center in Shell Rock, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Veleave Fails and Faye King; and two brothers, Lloyd and Glenn Miller. Dale is survived by his half-sister, Carolyn (Roger) Henninger of Waverly, Iowa; and five nieces and nephews, Ronald (Betty) Miller of Clarksville, Iowa, Marilyn (Charles) Niehaus of Clarksville, Iowa, Audrey (Lyle) Smith of Columbus Junction, Iowa, Ricky (Cyndi) Henninger of Allison, Iowa and Mike and (Dee) Henninger of Oelwein, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, November 6, 2006, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville with Rev. Laura Hucke officiating. Special Music was “In the Garden” and “Amazing Grace”. Honorary Casketbearers were Roger Henninger, Ron Miller and Lyle Smith. Casketbearers were Rick Henninger, Mike Henninger, Paul Miller, Alan Miller, Brian Miller and Bruce Hoodjer. Burial was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa with Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.

WEDEKING

Herman Wedeking, age 89 of Nashua, died Sunday morning October 29, 2006, at Bartel’s Lutheran Home in Waverly. Herman William Wedeking was born October 26, 1917 in Butler County, Iowa, the son of Edmund and Louise (Klunder) Wedeking. He attended rural school at Beaver Creek # 6 in Butler County. He was united in marriage to Maxine L. Boeckman at St. John’s United Church of Christ - Siegel, rural Waverly. To this union seven children were born. They farmed until 1962 when they moved to Nashua and Herman started hauling canned and bulk milk for Hygrade in Plainfield. He later hauled for Farmers Co-Op Creamery in Nashua until it closed. He retired in 1979 but continued farming small tracts of ground as his hobby. Herman belonged to the Moose Lodge in Charles City and enjoyed dancing to waltzes and polka music. He also enjoyed traveling the countryside and checking how the crops were doing. Failing health made it necessary to move to Bartel’s Lutheran Home in 2005, he improved and was able to return home for awhile before returning in June of 2006. Herman is survived by two sons, James (Lois) Wedeking of Nashua and Eugene (Susie) Wedeking of Grinnell; four daughters, Sandy Bienemann of Waverly, Nancy (Butch) Hillesheim of Nashua, Linda (Gene) Johnson of Plainfield and Sheila (Bob Steely) Wedeking of Waverly; two brothers, Clarence of Clarksville and Raymond of Shell Rock; 11 grandchildren, Annette Dietz, Todd Bienemann, Chris Siemons, Shawna Hillesheim, Melaine Clipperton, Janel Wedeking, Michelle Bond, Brian Bilharz, Jeremy Bilharz, Daphne Peckham and Mellissa Burton; nine step-grandchildren; 39 great & step-great grandchildren; and a special friend, Donna Hullion. Herman was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine on April 28, 1991; a daughter, Mary Ann (in infancy) in 1957; two grandchildren, Jay Betsinger and Adalissa Wedeking; two sons-in-law, George Betsinger and Darwin Bienemann; his parents; two sisters, Lily Schrage and Florence Wedeking. Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at the United Methodist Church in Nashua with Pastor Keith Tomlinson and Pastor Karl Schiltz officiating. Internment was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery rural Clarksville with Todd Bienemann, Brian Bilharz, Jeremy Bilharz, Austin Siemons, Brandon Siemons and Drew Dietz serving as casket bearers. KLUNDER

Harold W. Klunder was born September 17, 1930 in the farming community known as Pleasant Valley, Iowa to Arthur and Dora (nee Schrage) Klunder. He entered into rest November 1, 2006 in Spokane, Washington. He was 76 years old. Harold was baptized in the First United Church of Christ Pleasant Valley and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Clarksville, Iowa. He received his education at the rural school of Pleasant Valley and graduated from Clarksville High School. He entered the United States Air Force in 1951 where he remained until 1971. On December 6, 1962, he was united in marriage to the former Martha Winkler. After leaving the Air Force, Harold continued to work for various asphalt companies in the Spokane area. He worked at Wm. Winkler Co, S & F Paving, and Shamrock Paving. He was an avid pheasant hunter and sponsor of Ducks Unlimited. He pitched in the Spokane Fastball League and was a member of International Foot Printers and the Teamsters. Harold is survived by his wife, Martha; daughters: Kim Clark and husband Tim of Spokane, Robin Klunder of Seattle, step-daughter, Connie Ashby of Spokane; granddaughter, Carla Klauder of Spokane; grandson, Roger Klunder of Dallas, Texas; and one of the great joys of his life, great grandson, Michael Barton; brother, Larry Klunder and wife Pat of Remer, Minnesota; nieces: Julie Guttierrez and Kelly Murphy of San Diego, California. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Loretta. A Memorial Service was held Monday, November 6, 2006 at Hennessey Smith Funeral Home in Spokane, WA, with a private burial at Holy Cross Cemetery in Spokane, WA. Honorary Pallbearers were: Dave Walker, Tom McLaughlin, Doug Christensen, Sherman Barnes, Larry Klunder, Jim Winkler, Tim Clark, Dan Murphy and Jim Merriman. WOLFF

Luella Dena Wolff, age 75, of Eldora and formerly of Aplington, Iowa, was born November 18, 1930, to Jacob and Dena Frey Wolff at the family home near Aplington, the youngest of four children. She attended the Aplington School and continued living with her parents until they passed away. She was a member of the Aplington Baptist Church. Due to failing health, she became a resident in the Eldora Nursing and Rehab Center for eleven years. Luella enjoyed taking care of her flowers in the garden. She enjoyed playing Wahoo and Chinese Checkers when family stopped by. Through the years she kept in touch with a pen pal in Germany. She liked to work on her scrapbooks, play piano and crochet edges on hankies. Luella passed away Tuesday morning, October 31, 2006, at the Eldora Nursing & Rehab Center in Eldora, Iowa, at the age of 75 years and 11 months. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Dena Wolff; a brother, Garrelt Wolff; a sister-in-law, Anna (Henry) Wolff; a brother-in-law, William Hemmen; a niece Linda Meinders and a great-niece, Tressa Meinders. She is survived by one brother, Henry Wolff, Aplington, Iowa; one sister, Swanetta Hemmen, Aplington, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Berdena Wolff, Aplington, Iowa; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 3, 2006 at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, Iowa with Pastor Dan Smith and Rev. Donald Patet officiating. Vocalists Gordon Hippen and Rev. Don Patet sang “This World Is Not My Home”. Special Music was “Old Rugged Cross” and “Amazing Grace”. Casketbearers were Kenneth Nevenhoven, LaVern Wolff, David Wolff and Gordon Hippen. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Norma Nehring, age 88, of Iowa Falls, died on Wednesday, November 01, 2006 at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls. Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls with visitation one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Keystone Cemetery in Keystone. Norma Amanda Brauer Nehring was born January 22, 1918 in Guttenburg, Iowa, the daughter of Albert H. and Anna (Ortman) Werner. Norma grew up in Allison and recieved her early education there graduating from Allison High School in 1935. Following her graduation she attended Iowa Normal School in Cedar Falls to recieve her teaching certificate. Norma taught country school until her marriage to Albert H. Brauer on June 2, 1940 at St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone, Iowa by Rev. Albert W. Brauer. Residing in various communities, Norma and Al raised three children while he pursued his career in school administration. In 1954, while in Hubbard, her husband, Supt. A.H. Brauer passed away. Norma returned to teaching, and at the same time attended summer school and evening classes at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, to complete a B.A. degree in education. Norma and her children moved to Iowa Falls in 1958 where she taught 5th grade and remedial reading until her retirement in 1983. On July 13, 1968, Norma was married to Arthur C. Nehring at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls and lived in Iowa Falls until Arthur’s death August 5, 1995. Norma remained involved with church, community and professional activities until heatlh issues required her to move to Scenic Manor in 2000. Norma was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she served on several committees, Delta Kappa Gamma, Retired Teachers Association, Bridge Club and BPW. Those thankful for having shared her life include two sons, Ronald A. Brauer and his wife Susan of Crete, IL.and Dennis L. Brauer and his wife Martha of Hayward, WI. ; a daughter, Carol J. Deal of Batavia, IL.; 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, both spouses and three brothers.


GARRELS

Miriam Garrels passed away October 30, 2006 at the Dumont Wellness Center. Funeral services were held Friday morning at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont, Iowa with Rev. Douglas Tharpe officiating. Special music was provided by organist Phyllis Gronberg accompanying the congregational singing. Ushers were Ruth Cuvelier and Gert Wilken. Pallbearers were Andy Garrels, Tim Bazyn, Greg Garrels, Mike Sawyer, Mark Sawyer and Matt Sawyer. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery. I. Miriam Garrels was born on August 2, 1926 to Andrew and Mame (Fenning) Lupkes. She attended a one-room school near the family farm in rural Ackley until 8th grade and then attended and graduated from Dumont High School in 1944. On March 22, 1946, she married Elmer Garrels. They farmed in the rural Dumont area for 53 years. To this union were born 4 children, Michael, Elgene, Brian and Jennifer. She enjoyed being a Mom and Grandma. Miriam was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Dumont, singing in the church choir and teaching Sunday School for many years. She was a member of the Pathfinders Adult Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women. She was secretary of the Mason City District of United Methodist Women for several years, and served as a “shepherdess” for several other local UMW units within the district. She was a volunteer for the Butler County Chapter of the American Cancer Society and active in Relay for Life. She served on the committee to raise funds for the remodeling of the Dumont Library. In 1993, she received the Governor’s Volunteer Award from Governor Branstad for leading the effort to transfer past Dumont Journal newspapers on microfiche for storage at the local library. Miriam was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed gardening, crocheting, needlepoint, and embroidery. She also enjoyed attending and hosting card parties with friends and neighbors. Miriam passed away peacefully on Monday evening, October 30, 2006 surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her children: Mike (and Sue) Garrels of Laurel, Elgene (and Dick) Bazyn of Henry, Illinois, Brian (and Cheryl) Garrels of Emmetsburg, and Jennifer of Altoona; 8 grandchildren: Matthew (and Stacy) Bazyn of Austin, Texas, Timothy (and Raeanne) Bazyn of Chillicothe, Illinois, Laura Bazyn currently doing mission work in the Czech Republic, Kathryn Garrels of Madison, Wisconsin, Andrew (and Kyla) Garrels of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Jenna Garrels of Laurel, Nathaniel Garrels of Rochester, New York, and Gregory Garrels of Emmetsburg; 2 great grand-daughters; her brother Gaylord Lupkes of Ackley; and sister Magdalene DeVries of Aplington. Funeral Services for Carol “Joanie” Duffield, 70, Charles City, formerly of Greene, were held Thursday, November 9, 2006, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, Greene, with Pastor Val Swinton and Pastor Kent Sovine officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Carol JoAnn Figgins was born December 16, 1935 in rural Pocahontas, a daughter of Val Eugene and Pauline Laura (Craig) Figgins, and died Monday, November 6, 2006, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. She received her education in the Mason City Public Schools and as a young lady was employed as a nurse’s aide at Mercy Hospital in Mason City. On September 15, 1958, she was united in marriage to James Arthur Duffield in Canton, SD. In 1964 they made their home in Greene where she was employed by the Candle Shop, Sonny’s, and the Greene Inn. She was last employed by Bill’s Foods until she was forced to retire in 1998 after being diagnosed with cancer. Her interests included crocheting, knitting, and going to rummage sales. Her family, especially her grandchildren, was her life and joy. She walked the Relay For Life every year up to the end. Living family members include her loving husband, Jim of Charles City; her daughter, Connie (Dan) Glandon of Charles City, three sons: Terry Taylor of Springfield, OR, Del Duffield of Charles City, David (Debra) Duffield of San Diego, CA; six grandchildren: Cody Duffield, Lindsey Glandon, Joshua Duffield, Cassandra Glandon, Jesse Duffield, and Jason Glandon; her sister Betty (Gordon) Pennington of Black Water, MO, sister-in-law: Martha Starkey of Charles City, and daughter-in-law: Karen Hughes of Osage. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one son: Douglas James Duffield; and one brother: Bill Figgins. POWERS

John Leroy Powers, age 84, of Harrison, Arkansas and formerly of Parkersburg, Iowa was born October 20, 1922, the son of Reisen Hammon and Inez (Richardson) Powers near Waterloo, Iowa. He received his education from the Vinton School for the Blind in Vinton, Iowa. John was united in marriage with Lorna Brake on January 14, 1950, in Waterloo, Iowa. They made their home in Waterloo for 25 years. In 1975 they moved to an acreage west of Parkersburg, where he enjoyed taking care of his livestock, horses, cattle and hogs. John worked as a machinist for John Deere Co. in Waterloo for 37 years, until he retired in 1981. John was an active member of the Iowa State Commission for the Blind and was president of the local Commission in Iowa. For a number of years he served on the Independent Living Board. Through the years John enjoyed playing on a blind bowling league, he liked collecting various knives and spent many hours wood-working, especially he enjoyed making ladders “John’s Ladder’s.” John died Tuesday, November 7, 2006 in the Harrison Nursing Center, Harrison, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 52 years, Lorna Powers, on November 15, 2002. He is survived by one son, John (Deb) Powers, Yellville, Arkansas; one daughter, Lolynn (Tom) Menuey, Evansdale, Iowa; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 11, 2006 at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington, Iowa with Rev. Dennis Platt officiating. Special Music was “I Believe” and “I’ll Fly Away”. Casketbearers were Ray Powers, Thomas Menuey, Jack Hoffman and Dennis Johnson. Burial was in New Providence Cemetery, New Providence, Iowa. EIKLENBORG

Luella Lena Eiklenborg, age 84, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born June 1, 1922, the daughter of Dick and Dora Claassen Rewerts near Dike in rural Grundy County, Iowa. She attended country schools. Luella was baptized at Salem Lutheran Church near Fern. Luella was united in marriage with Albert Eiklenborg on February 21, 1940 at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church parsonage. She farmed with her husband until they moved to Aplington. After her husband died, she later moved to Parkersburg. Luella was a member of the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, rural Holland where she taught Sunday School in the past. She was a farm wife and also did cleaning and babysitting through the years. She loved to do gardening and taking care of flowers and enjoyed all her family when they came to visit. She never missed a birthday or anniversary with a card. Luella died Saturday, November 11, 2006, at her home of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert who died July 4, 1972; her parents; one sister in infancy; two brothers, Dwight and Roy Rewerts; three sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law. She is survived by one son, Marvin (Esther) Eiklenborg, Waterloo, Iowa; two daughters, Betty (Daryl) Schmidt, Allison, Iowa and Jolene (Scott) Smidt, Solon, Iowa; eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leo (Mildred) Rewerts, Parkersburg, Iowa and Dean (Betty) Rewerts, Allison, Iowa; three sisters, Viola (Johnny) Muller, Allison, Iowa; Mary Dixon and Joan Moore, both of Hansell, Iowa; and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 18, 2006 at Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, Holland, Iowa with Rev. Russell Muilenburg officiating. Organist was Carolyn Stahl. Congregational Hymns were “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”, “Amazing Grace”, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” and “Softly and Tenderly”. Casketbearers were Luella’s Grandsons and Great-grandsons, Roger Eiklenborg, Royce Eiklenborg, Matthew Smidt, Marshall Smidt, Zachary Freese and Cody Ott. Funeral services for Geneva May Martin, 99, of 127 Cedar Terrace North, formerly of Greene, will be 11:00 am.,Saturday, November 25, 2006 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, November 24, 2006 at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. Greene. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services. Geneva May Martin was born March 11, 1907 in Union Twp, Floyd Co., Iowa a daughter of George and Mary Elizabeth (Ruffridge) Barth and died Saturday, November 18, 2006 at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. She was baptized on September 8, 1909, and confirmed a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church on April 9, 1922. She received her education in the Floyd County Country School and attended Greene High School. She was united in marriage to Ted O. Martin on September 6, 1928 at the Methodist Church in Waterloo, Iowa, and to this union were blessed two son: Paul Gene and Duane Robert. Geneva returned to Greene in 1939 where she was employed by Greene Produce Company. She later worked for Belmond Mfg in Charles City and did housekeeping for families in the area. At the age of 91, Geneva moved to Charles City where she worked as a Foster Grandparent for three years. She enjoyed the years being a Foster Grandparent. She played Bingo at the Senior Center and playing cards with her friends. She liked to garden but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. Living family members include her son: Duane Robert (Bonnie) Martin of Charles City; eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren. and two great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Paul Gene Martin (2000), her parents, six brothers and five sister. HANSEN

Funeral services for Jessie G. Hansen, 93, formerly Greene, were held Tuesday, November 21, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Jessie Grace Taylor was born May 14, 1913 in rural Toddville, Linn County, a daughter of Fred and Fern (Mason) Taylor and died Saturday, November 18, 2006, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene. She received her education in country schools and graduated from the Toddville High School in 1932. She was united in marriage to Harley Hansen on September 5, 1933 in Toddville, IA. In 1936 they moved to a farm in rural Greene where they remained until 1956 when the purchased a farm between Plainfield and Greene. Harley and Jessie retired in 1978 and moved into Greene. He died March 31, 1984. Jessie was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene, where she was involved in various church circles which included the Friendly Circle and the Sewing Circle. She was a member of the Coldwater Community Club, 4-H leader for several years, and helped with the congregate meals at the Greene Community Center. She will be remembered for the homemade bread and baked goods she made. She will be remembered as a caring and generous person with her time and possessions, thinking of others first. She was a practical individual who accepted life as it was. Living family members include her daughter Rowena (Harry) Johnson of Lexington, KY; her two sons: Donald (Jacqueline) Hansen of Waterloo, and Gordon (Diane) Hansen of Kingman, AZ; eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; one brother: James Taylor of Cedar Rapids. Jessie leaves to join her husband Harley who died March 31, 1984, her daughter, Marion Foss, who died in 2001, her parents, four sisters:Ruth Feekes, Jean Tesar, Lois Oliphant, Dorothy Shaffer; two brothers: William David Taylor and Dan Everet Taylor. JORDAN

Swanetta Augusta Jordan, age 87, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Fred and Minnie (Wildeboer) Hinders on May 13, 1919, on her parent’s farm near Clarksville. She received her education from a rural country school near her home and then continued at the Clarksville High School. Swanetta was united in marriage with Ernest Jordan on February 18, 1939, at the St. John Lutheran Church parsonage in Clarksville. They made their home on various farms north of Clarksville for a short time, until they moved to a farm in the southeast corner of Clarksville. She was a full time Mom and homemaker and also took care of a lot of the farm chores. Swanetta lived there until 1999 when she moved to the nursing home. She was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville, where she was active on the Women’s Guild in the past. Swanetta always raised a very large garden each year that they were very appreciative for the fresh fruits and vegetables. She loved to read and crochet and taught all of her children to crochet and anyone who wanted to learn. Her favorite hobby was going to garage sales to collect various unwanted dolls. She would clean them up, put back together the broken dolls or add them some new hair if needed. She really enjoyed crocheting them all new clothes. She loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. Swanetta died Thursday, November 16, 2006, at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, Iowa, from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest on October 31, 2000; her parents; two sisters, Florence Rottink and Annie Henning; and four brothers, Phillip, Pete, Fred and Richard Hinders. Swanetta is survived by three sons, Joe (Faye) Jordan, Larry (Kay) Jordan and Steve (Shirley) Jordan all of Clarksville, IA; nine grand-children; nine great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; ten step-great grandchildren; two brothers, Jim Hinders and Paul (Ruth) Hinders both of Clarksville, IA; three sisters, Gladys (Carl) Hoodjer, Bernice Krull both of Clarksville, IA and Mary (Harm) Hovenga of Herron, IL; and two sisters-in-law, Virginia Graeser of Plainfield, IA and Marilyn Hinders of Clarksville, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 20, 2006 at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville with Rev. Laura Hucke officiating. Organist was Harriet Forry. Congregational Hymns were “Amazing Grace”, “In The Garden” and “Nearer My God To Thee”. Honorary Casketbearers were her grandsons Cliff Nieman, Cody Nieman, Charles Jordan and Duane Jordan. Casketbearers were her grandsons Bill Jordan, Joshua Jordan, Shawn Jordan, Tim Jordan, Daniel Rambo and Jaron Wagner. Burial was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Funeral services for Allen Keith “Shorty” Zurcher, 80, of Greene, were held Monday, November 20, 2006, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, rural Greene, with Pastor Charles Dorsey officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with military honors conducted by the Waverly Amvets Post 79. Allen Keith Zurcher was born September 21, 1926 at home, rural Coldwater Township, Butler Co, a son of Thomas and Florence (Pringle) Zurcher, and died Thursday, November 16, 2006, at the Hospice Inpatient Unit at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. He received his education in a country school and graduated from the Greene High School in 1944. He attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for one term. On February 28, 1945 he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp where he served as a combination welder with the 534th Air Engineer Squadron in Clark Field on Luzon. Following his discharge on January 15, 1947, he returned home where he was employed by Shield Bantam in Waverly. On November 16, 1949 he re-enlisted with the 2473rd Air Force Reserve, Offutt AFB in Omaha,NE. Keith was united in marriage to Adelheid Litterer on November 23, 1950 at St. John’s United Church of Christ in rural Nashua. They made their home in Waverly. He was recalled into active duty March 1, 1951 where he served with the 1300th Maintenance Squadron at Mt. Home, ID. He was released from active duty on February 29, 1952. He resumed his employment at Shield Bantam, where he remained until 1958. Keith and his family moved to Greene where he started Zurcher Construction, which he operated until 1985. He was co-owner in another family owned business, Plasta Plug Inc. for 39 years. He loved music and enjoyed singing. Keith was interested in aviation, at one time owning a plane of his own. When he didn’t have his head in the clouds, he spent time riding, repairing, or rebuilding his Harley Davidson Motor Cycle. He made a large BBQ cooker for roasting hogs using it for various events in the area. “Shorty” will be remembered for his friendly disposition and humble demeanor. He considered himself a good listener who enjoyed hearing a good story or joke. Keith was baptized in 1926 at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene. He became a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Pleasant Hill where he has served as Elder and Deacon of the church. Living family members include his loving wife of 56 years, Adelheid, his son Terry (Kelly) Zurcher of Greene; two grandchildren: William and Jodee; two sisters: Arlene (Bill) Birkholz of Fairborn, OH, and Bonnie (Ervin) Loomis of Greene; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother in infancy. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Keith Zurcher Memorial Fund in care of the family.
