Raymond Haupt
June 29, 1928-September 1, 2012

September 5, 2012

DOWS—Raymond Haupt, 84, of Dows, passed away on Saturday, September 1, 2012, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday September 4, at the First Lutheran Church in Dows, with Pastor Ron Nelson officiating. Burial took place in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows. Graveside military rites were provided by the American Legion Watson Beach Post #523 in Dows. The Dugger Funeral Home in Dows, was in charge of the arrangements.

Raymond was born in Sac City on June 29, 1928. He was the third youngest of 12 children born to Frank and Kate Smith Haupt. His family lived in the Rowan and Belmond areas, where he attended country school. He married Arthurine Sime on February 22, 1948. Ray worked for various farmers until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953. He was sent to Korea and attained the rank of sergeant with the combat engineers. After his discharge from the army, Ray began his farming career. Farming, for Raymond, was a passion that could only be defined as perfection. His grain fields had straight rows and countless hours walking fields kept them immaculate. Raymond’s pig operation had the neatest pigs and cleanest hog houses anywhere. Friends often teased Ray, wondering if he even brushed the pigs’ teeth every morning.

Ray and Arthurine were blessed with a daughter, Kim born in 1955. Ray was very proud of Kim. Raymond loved to dance and was a very good dancer. Friends referred to him as rubber legs. Arthurine and he continued to dance until his health prevented him. The couple farmed together until 2006, but continued to live on the farm. Raymond had open heart surgery in 2012 and then lived at the Franklin General Care Center until his death. Raymond was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Dows and the American Legion Watson Beach Post #523 in Dows.

Raymond is survived by his wife, Arthurine; daughter, Kim (Don) Foth of Cedar Falls; his pride and joy, grandson, Brian Foth of Tampa, Florida; three sisters, Wilma (Hartley) Friesleben, Lorraine Johnson and Helen Ahrens; one brother, Duane (Darilyn) Haupt; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mildred and Minnie; and six brothers, Edd, Alvin, Bernard, Robert, Donny and Leo.

Gary Douglas Warman
July 12, 1942-August 18, 2012

September 19, 2012

PHOENIX, Arizona—Gary Douglas Warman, a longtime resident of both Alden and Iowa Falls, passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2012. Gary suffered from pulmonary fibrosis (farmer’s lung) and died peacefully at the North Mountain Medical and Rehabilitation Center, in Phoenix, Arizona. He had lived in the Phoenix area for the last two years.

Thinking of others even in his last days, Gary donated his body to the Biological Resource Center in Arizona for medical research. His memorial service will be on Saturday, September 22, at 10:00 a.m., at the Alden United Methodist Church in Alden. The committal service will be held in the Alden cemetery and lunch will follow at the church.

Gary was born on July 12, 1942 in Iowa Falls. He spent his early elementary school years in Iowa Falls and one year in country school. Then he moved on to the Alden Community School District, where he graduated in 1961. He attended Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls. In May of 1963, Gary enlisted in the United States Navy. After boot camp, he received his officers’ training in Pensacola, Florida. He went on to serve for over 24 years as both an active duty officer and in the Navy Reserves. During his career, he flew reconnaissance missions and was stationed throughout the world. He retired from the Navy as a lieutenant commander. While in the Navy Reserves, Gary attended Iowa State University (ISU) and graduated with a degree in agricultural business. He loved attending ISU sporting events and was a regular participant in pre-game festivities.

A longtime Republican activist, Gary held many leadership positions on the Hardin County Republican Central Committee. He was also a Mason and a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War. Gary’s talents were abundant. Not only did he help both his brother and brother-in-law farm, he spent many years as an insurance agent and his interest in flying never waned. He flew political candidates around the state of Iowa and also flew for United Parcel Service.

Gary’s family and friends will miss him dearly, however his sense of humor will keep us smiling.

He is survived by his brother, Craig Hamilton (Linda) Warman of Ottumwa; and sisters, Karen L. (Leroy) Hayes of Urbandale and Connie L. (Lurlin) Hoelscher of Williams; as well as many nieces and nephews.
