DOWS—Raymond
Haupt, 84, of Dows, passed away
on Saturday, September 1, 2012,

Nursing Facility in Hampton.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday September
4, at the First Lutheran Church
in Dows, with Pastor Ron Nelson

in the Fairview Cemetery in
Dows. Graveside military rites
were provided by the American
Legion Watson Beach Post #523 in
Dows. The Dugger Funeral Home in

Raymond was born in Sac City on
June 29, 1928. He was the third
youngest of 12 children born to
Frank and Kate Smith Haupt. His
family lived in the Rowan and
Belmond areas, where he attended
country school. He married
Arthurine Sime on February 22,
1948. Ray worked for various
farmers until he was drafted
into the U.S. Army in 1953. He
was sent to Korea and attained
the rank of sergeant with the
combat engineers. After his
discharge from the army, Ray
began his farming career.
Farming, for Raymond, was a
passion that could only be
defined as perfection. His grain
fields had straight rows and
countless hours walking fields
kept them immaculate. Raymond’s
pig operation had the neatest
pigs and cleanest hog houses
anywhere. Friends often teased
Ray, wondering if he even
brushed the pigs’ teeth every
morning.
Ray and Arthurine were blessed
with a daughter, Kim born in
1955. Ray was very proud of Kim.
Raymond loved to dance and was a
very good dancer. Friends
referred to him as rubber legs.
Arthurine and he continued to
dance until his health prevented
him. The couple farmed together
until 2006, but continued to
live on the farm. Raymond had
open heart surgery in 2012 and
then lived at the Franklin
General Care Center until his
death. Raymond was a member of
the First Lutheran Church in

In 1942, while attending summer
school at Colorado State
University, Ft. Collins,
Colorado, Dagmar met a tall,
veterinary student named Lewis
Vidal. They married in June
1944. The couple made their home
in Hampton until Dr. Vidal’s
death in 1990. Dagmar moved to
Miami, Florida in 1992. While
living in Miami, she was active
in community affairs such as
Habitat for Humanity, the Jackie
Gleason Theater and Church by
the Sea, Oldsmare, Florida. In
1992, Dagmar married Ove
Johansen, a childhood friend,
and moved to Longwood to be with
him there. Ove died in 1997.
Dagmar resided at the Village on
the Green until her death.
Dagmar was a
devout Christian, teacher,
bridge player, hospital
volunteer, baker, cook,
seamstress, worrier, giggler and
above all else, a Dane and a
Democrat. While living in
Hampton, she was involved in
many civic and church
activities. She was a member of
the St. John’s Lutheran Church,
Franklin General Hospital
Auxiliary, the Hampton Country
Club, As You Like It club,
Franklin County Democrats and
was a Cub Scout den mother. In
1960, she was a delegate to the
Democratic National Convention,
which nominated John Kennedy. By
1964, Dagmar was a member of the
Iowa Democratic State Central
Committee, representing the
Third Congressional District. In
1972, she was elected to serve
on the Executive Committee of
the Democratic National
Committee, being reelected in
1976 and 1980. Dagmar attended
five Democratic National
(presidential) Conventions and
the inaugurations of John
Kennedy and Jimmy Carter.
She loved music and songs,
flowers and spirited debate.
Dagmar lived during an awesome
sweep of time: from herding
sheep with her father, to the
railhead south of Hampton, to
the White House — a Democrat to
the end.
Left to mourn her passing are
her children, Kathy Vidal of
Staten Island, New York, Robert
Vidal of Hampton, Dr. Peter
Vidal of Garner and Leonard
Vidal of Daytona Beach, Florida;
grandchildren, Kirsten Shaw,

September 19, 2012
PHOENIX,
Arizona—Gary Douglas Warman, a
longtime resident of both Alden
and Iowa Falls, passed away on
Saturday, August 18, 2012. Gary
suffered from pulmonary fibrosis
(farmer’s lung) and died
peacefully at the North Mountain
Medical and Rehabilitation
Center, in Phoenix, Arizona. He
had lived in the Phoenix area
for the last two years.
Thinking of others even in his
last days, Gary donated his body
to the Biological Resource
Center in Arizona for medical
research. His memorial service
will be on Saturday, September
22, at 10:00 a.m., at the Alden
United Methodist Church in
Alden. The committal service
will be held in the Alden

early elementary school years in
Iowa Falls and one year in
country school. Then he moved on
to the Alden Community School
District, where he graduated in
1961. He attended Ellsworth
Community College in Iowa Falls.
In May of 1963, Gary enlisted in
the United States Navy. After

officers’ training in Pensacola,
Florida. He went on to serve for
over 24 years as both an active
duty officer and in the Navy
Reserves. During his career, he
flew reconnaissance missions and
was stationed throughout the
world. He retired from the Navy
as a lieutenant commander. While
in the Navy Reserves, Gary
attended Iowa State University (ISU)
and graduated with a degree in
agricultural business. He loved

and was a regular participant in
pre-game festivities.
A longtime Republican activist,
Gary held many leadership
positions on the Hardin County
Republican Central Committee. He
was also a Mason and a member of
the American Legion and Veterans
of Foreign War. Gary’s talents
were abundant. Not only did he
help both his brother and
brother-in-law farm, he spent
many years as an insurance agent
and his interest in flying never
waned. He flew political
candidates around the state of
Iowa and also flew for United
Parcel Service.
Gary’s family and friends will
miss him dearly, however his
sense of humor will keep us
smiling.
