Iowa Falls, passed away on
Tuesday, May, 1, 2012, at the
Mercy Medical Center, Des
Moines.
Funeral services
will be held at 10:00 a.m., on
Saturday, May 5, at the Linn’s
Funeral Chapel, Iowa Falls, with
Pastor Steve Hill officiating.
Burial will follow in the Union
Cemetery, Iowa Falls.
Michael William
Mayland, was born on March 9,
1970 at Britt, the son of Gloria
J. (VanDusseldorp) and Walbert
W. Mayland, Jr. He attended the
Britt Community Schools,
graduating with the class of
1989. He was in 4-H and FFA
during high school and had
worked at the high school. He
was baptized and confirmed at
the First Lutheran Church,
Britt. He attended the Iowa
Lakes Community College. Mike
worked for Martings
Manufacturing, Britt, The Boyt
Co. and the City of Iowa Falls.
He also raised Belgian paints,
quarter horses, mules and
donkeys. He helped the the areas
local kids in 4-H and FFA, with
their horse projects. He also
helped with the Equestrian
Center with driving classes and
gave rides on holidays at
Calkins Nature Center, and
native trails at the Hampton
Pumpkin Days. His Belgian team
was also at the Franklin County
Fair on the seven team horse
wheel thrashing machine. His
horses were shown in 4-H and FFA
at the Hardin and Franklin
County fairs. He enjoyed
hunting, fishing, trapping,
trail rides and working his
horses.
Mike Mayland is survived by his
parents, Walbert and Gloria
Mayland of Britt; a daughter,
Lacey Mayland of Iowa Falls; two
grandchildren, Landon and Dylan
Brekke of Iowa Falls; a sister,
Becky (Charles) Fitz of Iowa
Falls and her sons, Bradley
Mayland and Levi Fitz; his
grandparents, Nona VanDusseldorp
of Britt and Walbert B. Mayland
of Britt; a special aunt, June
(Eldon) Asche of Kanawa; and two
special friends.
He was preceded in death by his
grandparents, Mervin
VanDusseldorp and Caroline
Mayland; and his special
companion, his dog Duke.

active in the New Braunfels
Business Community as well as
the PTO in recent years.

SANTA BARBARA, California—John
Stotser, 71, of Santa Barbara,
California, passed away on
Saturday, May 5, 2012, at the
Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital
after a brief illness.
John was born on
May 26, 1940 in Iowa Falls, to
Harold and Florence Stotser. He
was raised along with his seven
siblings on their family farm.
John attended the Robertson
Elementary School, transferred
to IF Junior High in seventh
grade and graduated from the
Iowa Falls High School in 1958.
John was an avid wrestler,
following a family tradition. He
went to California in the late
1950s and settled down in Santa
Barbara where he met his wife,
Elisa on a blind date. They
married on September 5, 1964.
John worked for many years at a
local finance company, but it
was in April 1979 when John
followed his entrepreneurial
passion and opened a Marine
Supply business in Port Hueneme
along with a friend. John poured
all his blood, sweat and tears
into the company, which is still
highly successful today. It was
his “baby.”
John loved his family and
friends. You could always find
him either out on the golf
course playing or visiting with
his “cronies” at the Santa
Barbara Municipal Golf Course
(“Muni”). John also enjoyed
tending to the gardening at his
home and hosting family
barbecues.
John is survived
by his wife, Elisa; daughter,
Annamarie Cole of Goleta; son,
J.T. (Aimee) Stotser of
Camarillo; grandchildren, Colin,
Taylor, Cassidy, Jackson and
Ryan; sister, Lois Stevens of
Alexandria, Virginia; brothers,
George of Eldora and Bruce of
Janesville; and many nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; two sisters, Marilyn
and Patricia; two brothers,
Robert and William; and a
nephew, Michael.

Iowa Falls, died on Thursday,
May 10, 2012, at the Israel
Family Hospice House in Ames.
Funeral services
will be held at 10:30 a.m., on
Monday, May 14, at the Bethany
Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls,
with a 1:00 p.m. graveside
service in the Rowan Cemetery in
Rowan. Visitation will be from
2-4:00 p.m., on Sunday, at the
Surls Funeral Home in Iowa
Falls. In lieu of flowers
donations can be sent to the
Rowan Community Endowment Inc.
Scholarship, Rowan or to the
Bethany Lutheran Church in Iowa

Edna Mae
Williams, was born on June 18,
1935 in Wright County, the
daughter of Frank and Jennie
(Nolte) Retleff, Sr. She
graduated from the Rowan High
School and attended Ellsworth
Community College in Iowa Falls.
On August 18, 1962, Edna was
united in marriage to Charles
Williams at the Bethany Lutheran
Church in Iowa Falls. Edna had
worked as a health aide for
Hardin County Homemakers,
retiring in 2002. In her more
than 24 years as a health aide
she was able to be a part of
many families and develop
lasting relationships with them.
It was a great job for a person
with a big heart. Edna was a
faithful, loving, caring and
positive person. Even when times
were tough she took life without
complaint.
Edna was a den
mother for the Cub Scouts, a
member of the Hardin County
Extension and as a member of the
Bethany Lutheran Church, she
participated as a Sunday School
teacher and a committee member
for worship and music.
Some of Edna’s favorite quotes
were “Sometimes we are so busy
adding up our troubles that we
forget to count our blessings,”
“It takes a long time to grow
old friends” and “A man is rich
according to what he is, not
according to what he has.”
Edna’s four grandchildren were
the light of her life and a
great source of pride for her.
Their names came up frequently
in conversations with friends.
Edna is survived by her son,
Scott and his wife, Sandy of
Eldora; a daughter, Lori Krause
and her husband, Kent of Iowa
Falls; and three grandchildren,
Parker Krause, Katherine
Williams and Charles Williams.
Edna was preceded in death by
her parents; her husband; a
brother; and her grandson,
Hunter Krause.

Alfred was born on May 25, 1924
in Willow Township, the son of
Arthur and Esther (Smith)
Jenness. He later married
Barbara Peters on February 18,
1961, in Moline, Illinois. She
preceded him in death in 1991.
Alfred worked as a chiropractor,
graduating from Palmer College.
He is also a lifetime member of
The American Legion Post 0188,
The Iowa Falls Moose and the
Mississippi Valley Country and
Western Music Association, of
which he was a co-founder.
Alfred is also a member of the
CMA Country Music Association
and was inducted into the
Country Music Hall of Fame in
Nashville, Tennessee in 1968.
Survivors include daughters,
Michelle Jenness and Janice
Jenness-Cope; sons, Ed Jenness
and Alfred Jr.; brothers, Miron
and LeRoy Jenness; and sisters,
Alta May Bauman and Alma
Hendrickson.
He was preceded in death by his
parents and wife, Barbara.

rural Iowa Falls, passed away on
Thursday, May 10, 2012 at his
home.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, May 14, at
the First Christian Church, Iowa
Falls, with Pastor Bruce Klapp
of the Abundant Life Chapel
officiating. Memorials may be
directed to the Abundant Life
Chapel, Dows, Iowa. Private
family burial will be in the
Grant Township, Pleasant Hill
Cemetery, Franklin County. The
Linn’s Funeral Home, Iowa Falls,
was in charge of the

Donald Lavern Meyer “Popsie” was
born on May 25, 1931 at Iowa
Falls, the son of Lavern Arthur
and Mabel Bernice (Doidge)
Meyer. He attended country grade
school and graduated from the
Geneva High School with the
class of 1949. Donald served his
country in the U.S. Army during
the Korean War. On January 21,
1961, Donald was united in
marriage to Nancy Cora Cook at
Iowa Falls. To this union five
children were born, Julia, Joan,
Nicholas, Christopher and Betsy.
Donald lived and farmed for most
of his life on the same farm on
Highway 65 north of Iowa Falls.
He’s part of the four
generations Century Farm Award
in 1977. He retired from farming
in 1993.
He was a member
of the Abundant Life Chapel,
Dows and the American Legion.
Don loved to coffee with his
friends and never wanted to miss
coffee with Chris and “his
crew.” He loved his wife and
traveling with her to Hawaii and
Branson, making many friends
along the way. He dearly loved
being with his family, his
church family. Any potluck
dinner was appreciated. He loved
feeding his other dependents—the
birds.

Eugene U. Beving,
was born on February 16, 1936 in
Ackley, to Harry and Pauline
(Fritz) Beving. Eugene graduated
from the Ackley High School in
1954. On June 14, 1955, Eugene
was united in marriage to JoAnn
Rops at the Austinville
Christian Reformed Church.
Eugene was an
avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes
and the Minnesota Vikings. Gene
served several terms as Elder
and was presently on the Board
of Trustees at church. He also
enjoyed the AARP gang picnic
group, Don, Vergean and Marie,
Bob and Carol, and Don and Lil.
He farmed all his life and
enjoyed spending time with his
family.
Eugene is
survived by his wife, JoAnn of
Ackley; a son, Mike (Lisa)
Beving of Ankeny and their

Barbara Elaine Kelsey, was born
on July 24, 1933 at Iowa Falls.
She was the daughter of Gertrude
Rebecca (Thompson) and Glen
McCord. She attended the Iowa
Falls Community Schools. On May
1, 1950, Barb was united in
marriage to Dean Edgar Kelsey at
Bentonville, Arkansas. She was a
homemaker but sold Amway, Sun
Rider, Bee Line Clothes and
jewelry. She was a member of the
First United Methodist Church,
the Eastside Ladies Aid, the
Friendship Club and the Friends
Cemetery Association.
Barbara Kelsey is survived by
her husband, Dean Kelsey of Iowa
Falls; her children, Mary (Jim)
Martz of Andover, Minnesota,
Chuck (Sue) Kelsey of DeWitt and
Marjorie (Paul) Zani of Colorado
Springs, Colorado; eight
grandchildren, Adam Petersen,
Christopher Petersen, Jesse
Kelsey, Keegan Kelsey, Tessa
Colon, Jason Dagg, Paul Zani,
Jr. and Michael Zani; and 11
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her

Falls, died on Sunday evening,
May 13, 2012, at the Cedar Falls
Nursing Home.
Services were
held on Friday, May 18, at the
Open Bible Church, Waterloo,
with burial in the Greenwood
Cemetery. The Kearns Funeral
Service of Waterloo, was in
charge of the arrangements.
She was born on January 2, 1924
in Iowa Falls, the daughter of
Fred and Olga Gherke Surls. She
married the Rev. Roy R. Parker,
Jr. on June 22, 1944 in
Waterloo. He preceded her in
death on December 4, 2005. Freda
was the Dean of Women at the
Open Bible College in Des Moines
from 1966 to 1970. She was also
in business with her husband in
Parker Installations which
installed school equipment.
She is survived
by two daughters, Sherri Parker
and April (Rick) Angel, both of
Cedar Falls; one brother,
Merrill (Martha) Surls of Kansas
City, Missouri; three sisters,
Eva Anderson of Rockford,
Illinois, LaVonne Archer of
California and Roberta Huff of
Denver, Colorado; and two
grandchildren, Tucker and Tiger
Angel of Cedar Falls.

A. Ziesman, 91, of Eldora, died
on Monday, May 14, 2012, at the
Valley View Nursing and Rehab
Center in Eldora.
Funeral services
were held on Friday, May 18, at
the St. Paul Lutheran Church in
Eldora. Burial followed in the
Eastlawn Memory Gardens in
Eldora. The Creps-Abels Funeral
Home was in charge of the
arrangements. Memorials may be
directed to the Good Shepherd
Pre-School or to the St. Paul
Lutheran Church Social Room
Fund.
Irene was born on
March 23, 1921 in Eldora, the
daughter of Frank and Hattie
(Lettow) Balvanz. She graduated
from the Eldora High School
where she became certified as a
Normal School Teacher. She
helped new mothers at home for a
few years after high school,
then taught at the Meeker
Country School for a couple of
years. On August 18, 1946, Irene
was united in marriage to Albert
C.W. Ziesman at the St. Paul
Lutheran Church in Eldora. Irene
and Albert farmed in Hardin
County their entire married
lives.
She was a member of the St. Paul
Lutheran Church, where she was
confirmed and married and also
had sewn quilts for world
relief, and taught Sunday School
and Vacation Bible School. She
had served on the County
Extension Board for a year and
the Farm Bureau Board for three
years. She was a member of the
Farm Bureau Ladies for many
years and also served many years
as treasurer for the 50 Plus
Club and secretary for the
Lettow family reunion.
She is survived by her daughter,
Linda Kruger and her husband,
Eldon of Holland; son, Roger
Ziesman and his wife, Sharon of
Eldora; sister, Janet Bradford
of Bakersfield, California;
brother, Marvin “Mick” Balvanz
of Eldora and his wife, Joan;
sisters-in-law, Ruth, Mary and
Doris Balvanz and Laura Lange
and Reba Wehrman;
brother-in-law, Edward (Ione)
Ziesman; seven grandchildren, 12
great-grandchildren; and five
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, Albert on March 7,
2007; brothers, Robert, Harold,
Donald and Kenneth Balvanz; and
by sisters, Viola German and
Betty Roll.

Gary was born in
Iowa Falls on May 10, 1937, to
Lester and Maxine (Moore)
Trickey. He married Joyce
Carolus in 1958 and they resided
in Marshalltown during their
marriage. Joyce died in 1990.
Gary married Elinor Rutz on July
1, 2000 and then made his home
in Fort Dodge. After graduating
high school in Owasa, he served
in the U.S. Navy. Following his
discharge he attended college at
UNI and graduated with a
Master’s Degree in Industrial
Arts. He then taught industrial
arts at the West Marshall
Schools.
Gary was a member
of the Grace Lutheran Church and
enjoyed his men’s Bible study
group. His hobbies included
dancing, traveling — which
included 22 international trips
over the last 12 years,
motorcycling, bicycling — which
included a 5,000-mile
cross-country trip at the age of
60, camping, bird watching and
landscaping.
Gary is survived
by his wife, Elinor; children,
Brian (Dawn) Trickey of Mt.
Pleasant, Texas, Bradley (Deb)
Trickey of State Center and
Barry (Lisa) Trickey of Austin,
Texas; step-son, Dr. Dan (Ann)
Rutz of Las Vegas, Nevada;
grandchildren, Garret, Samantha,
Seth, Emily, Jessica and
Brandon; step-grandchildren,
Aidan and Noah; and his brother,
Don (Kay) Trickey of Kimberly
City, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his
first wife, Joyce; son, Brent;
and his parents.

Killed
May 19,
2012
A former
Iowa Falls resident died
in a two-vehicle
accident in Webster
County on Tuesday.
According
to the Iowa State Patrol
crash records, Gary
Trickey, 75, of Fort
Dodge and formerly of
Iowa Falls, was driving
a motorcycle east on
U.S. 20 when he was
rear-ended by a Chrysler
300M driven by Roger
Macy, 55, of Iowa Falls.
The
collision occurred at
3:15 p.m., near mile
marker 122. The report
notes that Macy did not
see Trickey as he
approached his
motorcycle from the
rear. The collision
threw Trickey from the
motorcycle. He was
pronounced dead at the
scene. Macy was
uninjured.

ALDEN—Howard
Lambert Duncan, 85, of Alden,
died on Thursday, May 17, 2012,
at the Ellsworth Municipal
Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, May 21, at
the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church
in Alden, with burial in the
Alden Cemetery. The Surls
Funeral Home in Alden, was in
charge of the arrangements.
Howard Lambert Duncan, was born
on April 24, 1927, to William
Preston and Edith (Godfrey)
Duncan at their Alden Township
farm home south of Alden. He
attended the rural school Alden
#10 in Alden Township through
the eighth grade. Howard
graduated from the Alden High
School in 1944. He joined and
served in the U.S. Navy from
1945-1947 with
16
months overseas at Eniwetok
Island. He remained active in
the Navy Reserve until 1950.
Howard was a graduate of the
Reisch Auctioneering College in
Mason City. He farmed south of
Alden. He also fed cattle on the
home farm as well as in Nebraska
and South Dakota. On June 7,
1950, Howard was united in
marriage to Vera Lavonne
Kasischke of Radcliffe. To this
union were born three children.
Howard was an
active member of the St. Paul’s
Lutheran Church of Alden, where
he held many offices. He was
also a member of the American
Legion Post #201 of Alden. There
were many other organizations in
which Howard was active.
Howard is
survived by his three children,
Reva (Greg) Merchant of Little
Elm, Texas, Royle (Jo) Duncan of
Alden and Ruth (Brian) Braymen
of New Providence; five
grandchildren, Jim Merchant of
Little Elm, Texas, Jill Merchant
of Little Elm, Texas, Bethany
(Craig) Crile of Des Moines, Jay
Duncan of Ames and Ben Braymen
of Ames; one sister, Florence
Hinderaker of Story City; one
brother, Marlyn (Kathy) Duncan
of Vinton; and numerous nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; his wife, Vera; a
brother, John Duncan; sisters,
Iowa Grubb and Alice Carpenter;
sisters-in-law, LaDonna Duncan
and Marie Grubb;
brothers-in-law, Robert W.
Carpenter, Grant Vold, Richard
Hinderaker and Joel Grubb; and a
nephew, Douglas Vold.

Falls, passed away on Friday,
May 18, 2012, at the University
of Iowa Hospital.
Donald Adams
donated his body for scientific
research to the University of
Iowa. Memorial services will be
held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday,
August 18, at the First Church
of God, Iowa Falls, with the
Rev. Stephen Acheson
officiating. Memorials may be

Donald Luverne
Adams, was born on August 16,
1927, at his grandparents’ farm
at Blairsburg, the son of Glen
Evert and Myrtle Marie (Mullins)
Adams. He attended grade schools
in Iowa Falls, Newell, Matlock
and Sheldon. He graduated from
the Sheldon High School with the
class of 1945. On November 14,
1943, Donald was united in
marriage to Winifred Ruth Parks
at Sheldon. To this union four
children were born, David,
Donald, Cynthia and Thomas. He
worked for the Illinois Central
Railroad in Sheldon and Iowa
Falls, until taking a job with
the Iowa Falls Post Office as a
mail carrier, retiring in 1990.
He also worked part-time for the
Iowa Falls Highway Lumber Co.,
Dewey Gilbert Construction
(helped build Iowa Falls schools
and churches), was an insurance
agent and worked for the Falls
Tool Company and the Iowa Falls
Gas Company.
He was a member
of the First Church of God
(serving on its Board of
Directors and teaching Sunday
School), the American Legion and
the National Association of
Letter Carriers. He also
delivered Meals on Wheels for
many years.

is survived by his wife,
Winifred Adams of Iowa Falls;
his children, David (Anna Marie)
Adams of Humboldt, Wayne Adams
of Eldora, Cynthia (Norman) King
of Sacramento, California and

Ackley, died on Saturday, May

following a sudden illness.

William Michael
Cooper, the son of Ralph and
Charlotte (Avery) Cooper, was
born on October 13, 1971 in
Marshalltown. He was reared and
educated in the Conrad and
Beaman areas and graduated from
the BCLUW High School in Conrad
in 1990. On July 9, 1993, Bill
was united in marriage to Lesa
Ann Montgomery at the First
Baptist Church in Iowa Falls.
The couple lived in Iowa Falls
until moving to acreages first
near Alden and to their current
home near Ackley. Bill’s dream
was to have his own electrical
business and he and Lesa were
able to establish and operate
Cooper Electric. He took a
personal interest in seeing that
his customers were treated well.
Bill is survived by his wife,
Lesa Cooper of Ackley; his
daughters at home, Madison and
Olivia; his mother, Charlotte
Cooper Miller of Story City; his
siblings, Becky (Kelly) Langholz
of Cumming, Deborah Cooper of
Ashburn, Virginia, Michelle
(Kevin) Rogers of Fort Dodge and
James Cooper of Beaman;
mother-in-law, Arlene Montgomery

the care of the Iowa Hospice.

Burial will be held privately by
the family. A memorial
visitation will be held from
6-8:00
p.m., on Thursday, May 24, at
the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in
Eldora. Memorials may be
directed to the Iowa Hospice or
the Salvation Army.
Sally was born in
Wichita, Kansas on July 9, 1944,
the daughter of George and
Lillian (Rea) Haines. She was
raised in Wichita and graduated
from the South East High School.
Sally continued her education
while attending Kansas State
University. Sally was united in
marriage to Jerrold Horton
Jenson on January 24, 1964 in
Wichita, Kansas and they
welcomed two daughters into
their family. In 1984, Jerry and
Sally opened Eldora Plastics
Inc. Upon Jerry’s death, Sally
assumed the position of CEO for
the company until her death. She
also served as the chairman of
the board of Plastic Recycling
of Iowa Falls.
Sally was a long-time member of
the Eldora United Methodist
Church. Her true joy came from
spending time with her family,
especially her grandchildren.
She enjoyed gardening, reading
and doing jigsaw puzzles. Sally
always tried to share her time,
efforts and money with others,
as she had been so fortunate
that others had shared with her
when she needed it most. Sally
tried not to waste the days God
gave her, but to live and enjoy
each of them with her family and
friends and to remember the many
blessings that have always
filled each day.
Sally is survived by her
daughters, Tara Jenson of Eldora
and Trista (Ben) Nelson of
Eldora; her grandchildren,
Layne, Braden and Rylee Nelson;
and her sister, Charlotte (Jack)
Norris.
She was preceded
in death by her parents;
husband, Jerry; and her brother,

Lois was born on
March 13, 1924 in Eldora,
daughter of George and Leona
(Meyers) May. She was educated
and raised in Eldora where she
graduated with the class of
1942. On February 22, 1946, Lois
was united in marriage to James
“Slim” Westerhausen in Hampton.
Lois had worked as a waitress
for several years and at the
Eldora Bakery before working for
Whink Products for 32 years.
She was a member
of the First Congregational
United Church of Christ and
enjoyed quilting, and fishing
with James.
Surviving is her
daughter, Sharon Balvanz and her
husband, Loren of Eldora;
sister, Dorothy Porter of
Marshalltown; grandson, Chad Roy
and his wife, Maggie of Eldora;
great-grandchildren, Gavin,
Jaiden and Brenna Roy and Nicole
and Jaime Balvanz;
step-daughters, Jenny (Calvin)
Kitchens and Kelli (Terry)
Blythe; and step-grandchildren,

She was preceded in death by her

Minnesota, due to colon cancer.

held on Monday, May 28, in the
Alden Cemetery in Alden.
Brandon Lee Stover, was born on
September 24, 1971 in Hampton,
to Thomas and Judith (Harding)
Stover. He attended the Alden
Community Schools, graduating
with the Class of 1990. On July
8, 2000, Brandon was united in
marriage to Janet Kay Boyer at
Worthington, Minnesota. Brandon
served in the Iowa Army National
Guard, 133rd Red Bull Division.
Brandon was a very accomplished
bowler and at age 17 rolled a
perfect 300 game. Brandon was
the owner/operator of Bran Jan
Trucking in Adrian and was an
avid NASCAR fan.
Brandon L. Stover is survived by
his wife, Janet Stover of
Adrian; two step-children,
Tiffany (La) Phomsatry of Adrian
and Ashlee Schmidt of
Marianville, Missouri; four
step-grandchildren; one sister,
Erika (DuWayne) Cleveland of
Adrian, Minnesota; one niece,
Kennedy Cleveland; one nephew,
Quinn Cleveland; uncles, Duane

Brandon was preceded in death by
his mother, Judy who died at age

died Sunday, May 27, 2012, at
the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in
Iowa Falls.

Friday, July 6, at the Surls
Funeral Home in Iowa Falls.
There will be no visitation.
Virginia was born
on January 31, 1906 in Retsof,
New York, the daughter of Joseph
and Elvira Torcello. She
graduated from the Irvington
High School in New Jersey. She
received her R.N. from Stamford
Hospital in Stamford,
Connecticut in 1928. Virginia
graduated from Seton Hall
University in 1950 with a B.S.
Degree. She had worked at the
Irvington General Hospital for
many years. She worked for the
Irvington Health Department as a
school nurse, and was the
Director of Nursing at a nursing
home in Maplewood, New Jersey.
On June 6, 1931, Virginia was
united in marriage to Rudolph
Brauchle in Irvington, New
Jersey. Their daughter, Virginia
Marie, was born on April 1,
1933. Upon Rudolph’s death on
February 19, 1972, she moved to
Iowa Falls and in August of 1999
she moved to the Scenic Manor.
Virginia was a
member of the Iowa Falls Women’s
Club and the Iowa Falls Garden
Club.
Virginia is survived by her
daughter, Virginia (Verle)
Beckman of Iowa Falls;
granddaughter, Diane (David)
Wyman of Elmhurst, Illinois; a
grandson, Steven (Marianne)
Carlson of Western Springs,
Illinois; three great-grandsons,

Iowa Falls, died on Monday, May

Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.

Falls, with inurnment in the
Alden Cemetery. Visitation will

June 3, at the Surls Funeral
Home in Iowa Falls.
Wayne Martin
Fisher, was born on April 12,
1919 in Bradshaw, Nebraska, the
son of Manley and Mabel (Porter)
Fisher. Wayne graduated from the
Polk High School in 1936. He
served in the U.S. Army Air
Corps from 1941-45,
with the 492 Bomb Group based in
England. As a crew member on a
B-24 he flew 33 missions as a
ball turret gunner (belly
gunner) including 25
high-altitude and eight night
missions to targets in France
and Germany. He earned the
Distinguished Flying Cross. On
March 24, 1946, Wayne was united
in marriage to Beverly McBride
in Blair, Nebraska. He attended
Iowa State College (Iowa State
University) from December 1945
to December 1948, graduating
with a major in agronomy. Wayne
worked for three years in
Denison and Eldora for the Soil
Conservation Service before
starting to farm north of
Radcliffe in 1952. He moved to
Buckeye in 1957, to continue
farming until 1978 when they
retired and moved to Arkansas
until 2000.
Wayne served on
the Hardin County Fair Board, he
was director and chairman of the
Farmers Mutual Insurance,
director of the Hardin County
Farmers Home Administration and
the Hardin County Extension
Council. He also had been a 4-H
Leader.
Wayne is survived by his three
sons, Bruce of Ames, Mark and
his wife, Jackie of Clear Lake
and Paul and his wife, Sherry of
St. Peter, Minnesota; seven
grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; and a
sister, Billie Jean Flynn of
Blair, Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; his wife, Beverly; a
brother, Paul; and a sister,
Mary Margaret.

Patricia Mary (Souza) Stark

THORNTON—Patricia
Mary (Souza) Stark passed
silently into Heaven on Monday,
May 28, 2012, at the Muse Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit after a
short battle with cancer.
Visitation and a
memorial service were held on
Friday, June 1, at the Retz
Funeral Home in Thornton, with
the Rev. Art Zewert of the Zion
Reformed Church, rural
Sheffield, presiding. Burial
took place following the service
in the Pleasant View Cemetery,
Thornton. A gathering of friends
and family was held directly
after the burial at the Legion
Hall in Thornton. Memorials may
be directed to the family.
Pat was born on March 24, 1948,
to Richard Joseph and Marie Edna
(Estrella) Souza in Fall River,
Massachusetts. She had a good
life being raised by her Aunty
and grandmother in Fall River.
She was married three times and
had six children before moving
to New Hampshire and then to
Maine, where she enjoyed her
summers working in hotels as a
chambermaid along the beach. In
1991, she moved with most of her
children to Iowa and enjoyed a
quiet lifestyle.
Her most favorite
pastimes were her Facebook games
and spending time chatting with
all of her gaming friends
online. She also built a website
entitled “Bible Study Help” in
order to help spread the Word of
God.
Those left to celebrate her life
include her husband, Bill of
Thornton; her son, Greg (Joelle)
Mendes and their sons, Zac and
Jesse, of Somerset,
Massachusetts; her daughter,
Jody (Brad) Dowless and their
children, Damien, Devan, Andrew,
Chase and Keira, of Iowa Falls;

Brooke, Cody, Kyle and Kailee,
of Iowa Falls; her son, James

daughter, Sheri (Bryan) Miranda

son, Billy Stark of Thornton;
her step-daughter, Theresa Stark

HAMPTON—Harold Burmester, 80, of
Hampton, passed away at his home
on Monday, May 28, 2012.
A memorial
service will be held on
Thursday, May 31, at 10:30 a.m.,
at the Trinity Lutheran Church
in Hampton. Visitation will be
from 4-6:00 p.m., on Wednesday,
at the church. The
Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in
Hampton, is in charge of the
arrangements.

HAMPTON—Lt. Col. Virgil I.
Lunning (USAF, ret), 91, of
Hampton, died on Monday, May 28,
2012, at the Rehabilitation
Center of Hampton.
Visitation will
be at 9:30 a.m., on Monday, June
4, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral
Home in Hampton. A memorial
service will be conducted on
June 4 at 10:30 a.m., at the
funeral home. Interment, with
full military honors provided by
the Offutt Air Force Base will
be held at 2:00 p.m., on June 4,
at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery at
Van Meter, west of Des Moines.

ELDORA—Lee J. Donnellan, 73, of
Eldora, formerly of Des Moines,
died on Thursday, May 31, 2012,
at the Eldora Nursing and Rehab
Center.
His body has been
gifted to the University
Hospitals and Clinic for
scientific research and no
services are planned. The
Creps-Abels Funeral Home in
Eldora, is in charge of the
arrangements.
