Norma McClanahan

IOWA FALLS—Norma McClanahan, 88, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Saturday, December 1, 2012, at the Heritage Care Center, Iowa Falls.

Memorial services were held on Tuesday, December 4, at the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls, with Pastor Carol Meyer officiating. Inurnment was in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Iowa, Marshalltown and Ellsworth Municipal Hospital Foundation, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Norma Nadine Lambert, was born on April 4, 1924 at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls, the daughter of Hardy and Kathryn Sylvia (Anderson) Lambert. She attended the Iowa Falls Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1942. On December 13, 1946, she was united in marriage to Dick E. Wellen. To this union a son, Randy was born. On January 5, 1948, Norma was united in marriage to William Glenn McClanahan in Lincoln, Nebraska. To this union four children were born, Kathryn, Patric, Michael and Mari Jo. They were lifelong residents of Iowa Falls.

Norma was a woman full of words and wisdom, proven in her wide range of employment opportunities. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls, the church circle and the Ladies of the Elks, Iowa Falls.

Norma McClanahan is survived by her children, Randy (Noim) Wellen of Yorba Linda, California, Kitty Hummer of Denver, Colorado, Patric McClanahan of Iowa Falls, Mike (Sandra) McClanahan of Boise, Idaho and Mari Jo Hardesty of Des Moines; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hardy and Kathryn Lambert; her husband, Bill Mc-Clanahan; and a brother, Richard “Wiff” Lambert.

Hollis Edmund Ryken

ACKLEY—Hollis Edmund Ryken, 87, of Ackley, died on Saturday, December 1, 2012, with family in Iowa City.

A visitation is being planned for early next summer.

Hollis was born on November 6, 1925 in Ackley, the son of Onno and Mabel (Weber) Ryken. He married Beverly Hammer on February 6, 1949 in Lamoni. Hollis graduated from the Ackley High School in 1943 and enlisted in the Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946. He returned and earned his degree in civil and consulting engineering from Iowa State University in 1949. He ran a long and successful private practice in civil and consulting engineering working throughout northeast Iowa for over 30 years.

His many activities included membership in state and national professional organizations, Rotary, American Legion, Chamber of Commerce, Board of Education, City Council and City Engineer for many of the area communities. Hollis and wife, Beverly enjoyed travelling, reading, antique collecting, fishing, playing bridge and had an intense interest in local history and genealogy. Together they were prominent in the founding and development of the Ackley Heritage Center, receiving multiple grants and awards including statewide recognition as the 2009 Golden Silo Award recipients. As with so many pioneer Ackley families, Hollis is the last resident to bear the Ryken name, which has been associated with the Ackley community since the 1860s.

Hollis is survived by two daughters, Holly (John) Thompson of Durham, North Carolina and Lisa (Kent) Rininger of Seward, Alaska; two sons, David (Shirley) Ryken of Portland, Oregon and Timothy (Shonda) Ryken of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was proceeded in death by his wife of 63 years, Beverly on December 20, 2011.

Ronald R. Foland

IOWA FALLS—Ronald R. Foland, 70, of Iowa Falls, died on Sunday, December 2, 2012.

Private services will be held at a later date. Iowa Cremation is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Ronald was born on May 13, 1942 in Independence, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Rosemary Porter Foland. He married Sandra P. Popp on April 6, 1977 in Boone, Iowa. Ronald was a machinist.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra; and his children, Mike Foland and family of Hazelton, Iowa, Shelly Fratzke and family of Independence, Iowa and Susan Rasmussen and family of Jefferson City, Missouri.

Howard Thomas Hinton

IOWA FALLS—Howard Thomas Hinton, 97, of Iowa Falls, died on Monday, December 3, 2012, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, December 7, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Union Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 6, from 4-7:00 p.m., at the Surls Funeral Home.

Howard Thomas Hinton, was born on April 24, 1915 in Bradford, to Delbert and Edith (Stockdale) Hinton. Howard graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1933. After high school, Howard joined the United States Army for four years. On October 23, 1945, Howard was united in marriage to Opal Burdick at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Buckeye. He retired from the United State Postal Service where he worked as a mail carrier. Howard enjoyed shooting trap, motorcycles and repairing guns.

Howard is survived by his wife, Opal of Iowa Falls; a son, Donald (Phyllis) Hinton of Des Moines; two grandsons, Michael (Debbie) Hinton of Vacaville, California and Jeffry Hinton of Chicago, Illinois; and a brother, Robert (Dorothy) Hinton of Spencer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dennis; and two brothers, William and James.

Lemma Lorine Herndon

ELDORA—Lemma Lorine Herndon, 99, of Eldora, passed away on Monday, December 3, 2012, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held on Friday, December 7, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora. Burial followed in the Eldora City Cemetery. The Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Lemma was born on October 20, 1913 in Pennville, Missouri, the daughter of Daniel and Dofa (Ledford) Rhoads. She attended country school in Pennville. Lemma was united in marriage to George Everett Herndon on October 17, 1931 in Putnam County, Missouri. Together they welcomed two sons into their family. The family moved to rural New Providence, Iowa, in 1937 and in 1951 they moved to the family farm in rural Eldora. Lemma worked as a homemaker and later in life at the kitchens of both the Eldora Hospital and the Eldora Manor. When George passed away in 1988 Lemma remained on the family farm until she moved into town in 2010.

Lemma remained active in her later life. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora, a volunteer at Quakerdale and was known for her generosity and hospitality. Lemma loved playing cards, gardening, cooking, baking and animals of any kind. Her true joy in life came from spending time with her family.

Lemma is survived by her sons, Caroll (Marie) Herndon of Forest City and Leon (Barbara) Herndon of Eldora; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; three great-great- grandchildren; and four step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; great-granddaughter, Anna Marie Nederhoff; brother, Raymond Rhoads; sister, Lona Bachman; and two infant sisters.

Donald M. Snittjer

SPENCER—Donald M. Snittjer, 89, passed away on Thursday, December 6, 2012, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital.

Funeral services were held on Monday, December 10, at the United Methodist Church in Ruthven. Interment was in the West Friesland Presbyterian Cemetery in Ackley. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Donald Marvin Snittjer, son of Simon and Vina (Nordman) Snittjer, was born on June 1, 1923 in Ackley and received his education in Ackley. After Don finished school he began farming in the Ackley and Lime Springs areas. Don was united in marriage to Helen Huesman and they were blessed with four children, Marilyn, Kathy, Randy and Kelli. Don and Helen lived in the Bristow area until Helen’s death in 1972.

Don married Betty (Capener) Rosacker on October 6, 1973. After moving to Ruthven in 1973, Don started the Ruthven Well Service which he owned and operated for several years. Don also was employed as a salesman in insurance as well as other sales positions. Don was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ruthven and Masonic Lodge.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Helen; a brother, Simon Snittjer; and stepson, Jeff Rosacker.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Snittjer of Ruthven; his children, Randy (Marti) Snittjer of Scottsdale, Arizona, Marilyn McGeachy of Murrietta, California, Kathy Cea of Peoria, Arizona and Kelli Gourdoux of Phoenix, Arizona; his stepchildren, Carol (Doug) Dykstra of Emmetsburg and Lori (Randy) Eggers of Sacramento, California; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

ACKLEY—John Holcomb, 78, of Ackley, died on Saturday, December 8, 2012, at the Covenant Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, December 12, at the Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Ackley, with burial in the Oakwood Cemetery in Ackley. The Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley is in charge of the arrangements.

John Holcomb was born on December 7, 1934 in Ackley, to John and Lottie (Blossie) Holcomb. He was united in marriage to Dorothy (Ridder) on June 16, 1956. John retired from Weaver’s Construction where he worked for 46 years. John enjoyed going to visit his wife at the Presbyterian Village and going down to Kum & Go in Ackley to pick on the girls.

John is survived by his wife, Dorothy; four granddaughters, Megan and Cassandra Wiederkehr of Ackley, Stacey Porter of Geneva and Jessica Saleh of Ackley; a sister, Velma Clark of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leslie Leroy and Stanley; and a sister, Mary Jane.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, December 12, at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton. Private burial will take place at a later date in the Liberty Township Cemetery in Little Cedar. A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, December 15, in Postville. Marion “Mike” Bell

IOWA FALLS—Marion “Mike” Bell, 86, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at the Presbyterian Village, Ackley.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, December 15, at the Linn’s Funeral Home Chapel, Iowa Falls. A time of visitation was held on Friday, December 14, at the Linn’s Funeral Home, with military honors provided by the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post #188, Iowa Falls. Private family inurnment will be in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Marion Richard Bell, was born on June 4, 1926 in Williams, to Carolyn (Johnson) and Sidney Bell. He attended school in Williams, graduating with the class of 1944. On October 28, 1944, “Mike” entered the U.S. Naval Service and received his discharge from the Navy on July 12, 1946. On August 7, 1948, he was united in marriage to Gladys LaVonne Knox at the Methodist Church in Nevada. Mike was employed with Ralston Purina and then Cargill for 40 years, retiring in 1988.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post #188, Iowa Falls, and Alcoholics Anonymous for 46 1/2 years upon death. He was a former member (30 years) of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1331, Iowa Falls. Mike played guitar for many local area bands.

Mike is survived by his wife, Gladys Bell of Iowa Falls; his children, Robert “Bob” (Laura) Bell of Tarpon Springs, Florida, Bruce Bell of Iowa Falls and Joni (Kelsey) Thayer of Iowa Falls; and two sisters, Irene (Chuck) Mayo of Pocahontas and Jane Olsen of Williams.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Carolyn Bell; an infant son, Marvin Bell in 1948; a daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Bell in 1996; his brothers, Melvin Bell, Everette Bell, Thomas Bell and Sidney Bell, Junior; and a sister, Lenore Jensen.

IOWA FALLS—Scott R. Crotty was born on November 16, 1962, in Chicago, Illinois, to James and Susan (Bennett) Crotty. Scott graduated from the Little Rock Central High School and then went on to attend the University of Arkansas.

Scott is survived by a very special friend, Shalane Tso of Iowa Falls; mother, Susan B. Crotty of Iowa Falls; brother, Stephen (Laura) Crotty and their children, Bridget and Celeste of Atlanta, Georgia; and a sister, Elise (Bruce) James and their children, Emma and Ethan of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his father; and his grandparents, Jim and Anne Crotty and Richard and Mildred (Foster) Bennett.

Margery TreanorMOLINE, Illinois—Margery Treanor, 82, of Moline, Illinois, died on Thursday, December 13, 2012, at her home.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 18, in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, with Pastor Kerry Sullivan officiating. Burial was in the Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Temple Missionary Baptist Church, Moline.

The former Margery Jo Christiansen was born on July 29, 1930 in Alden, Iowa, the daughter of Allen B. and Thora Hager Christiansen. She married Marlyn Treanor on July 22, 1950 in Iowa Falls, Iowa. He died on October 24, 1999. She was employed at Sears in Moline for over 20 years, retiring in 1987.

She was an active member of the Temple Missionary Baptist Church for many years and volunteered in the gift shop at Trinity Rock Island. She loved being involved with her grandchildren’s activities, loved spending time with her family and friends, and enjoyed reading.

Marge is survived by two sons and a daughter-in- law, Charles Treanor of Moline and Dennis and Susan Treanor of Rock Island; four grandchildren, Amanda Bender and her husband, Shaun and Brandon, Zachary and Caitlyn Treanor; two great-grandchildren, Aidan Treanor and Corey Strong; and her brother-in-law, Tony Ingraham of Tucson, Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her husband; and a sister, Marion Ingraham.

Dennis William Vieth

BLAIRSBURG—Dennis William Vieth, passed away on Friday, December 14, 2012.

A celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, December 22, at The Missionary Alliance Church in Blairsburg, at 10:00 a.m.

Dennis was born on September 9, 1934, in Eldora, the son of Emil and Walburga Vieth. He grew up in Dike. He married Elizabeth Caruth on October 7, 1955. He farmed and later opened Vieth’s Body Shop. He drove for Warren Trucking until he retired.

He attended the Missionary Alliance Church in Blairsburg. He was a devout Christian, active in his church and devoted to the study of God’s Word and service to his family until his health disabled him. Dennis loved everybody he met. He called everyone his friend.

He is survived by his six children, Jeff (Mary) Vieth, Michael Vieth, Kevin Vieth, Teri (Randy) Hartkopp, Jim Vieth, all from Iowa Falls and Lori (Doug) Wiseman of Williams; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; his siblings, John (Theresa) Vieth of Jessup, Emily (Greg) Whittle of Altoona and Mary Groat of Bakersfield, California; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mary Krieger

GUTHRIE CENTER—Mary Olive (Mc-Cool Anderson) Krieger, passed away on Monday, December 17, 2012, at the New Homestead in Guthrie Center, Iowa, at the age of 100 and four months.

Her body was cremated and the cremains will be laid to rest next to the father of her children in the Bear Grove Cemetery, rural Guthrie County, after a private memorial service to be held at a later date. Arrangements handled by the Twigg Funeral Home, Guthrie Center.

Mary, who grew up with the nickname “Dolly,” was born on August 2, 1912, in the family home in rural Guthrie County. She was the youngest of nine children born to Logan McCool, Sr. and Adabelle (Russell) McCool. On June 19, 1929, she married Howard Estill Anderson and to this union three children were born, Kenneth Dean Anderson, Norma Mae Anderson Zuck and Buddy Ray Anderson. Howard and Mary farmed in Guthrie County.

Widowed in 1943, Mary moved with her children to Guthrie Center where she lived until 1953, when she moved to Des Moines. She married Harold William Krieger on September 5, 1953. For 27 years until her retirement, she worked in food service at Drake University in Des Moines.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Howard E. Anderson and Harold W. Krieger; four brothers; four sisters; her son-in-law, Roy Junior Zuck; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Left to mourn are her children, Dean (Mary Rae) Anderson, Norma Zuck and Bud (Kyung Ja) Anderson; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the New Homestead and Iowa Hospice for their loving care of our mother. Any memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Des Moines.

WAVERLY—Dorothy “Pauline” Voss, 94, of Shell Rock, formerly of Clarksville, died on Monday, December 17, 2012, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly, from natural causes.

IOWA FALLS—Randy Piersol, 55, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at the Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.

Memorial services were held on Monday, December 24, at the First Christian Church, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel assisted the family with the arrangements.

Randy Piersol, was born on November 11, 1957 at the Ellsworth Hospital, Iowa Falls, the son of Ray Jr. and Joyce Kay (Blanchard) Piersol. He attended the Iowa Falls Community Schools. Randy was employed at Prestressed Concrete, Iowa Falls.

Randy Piersol is survived by his mother, Joyce Piersol of Bullhead City, Arizona; a son, Nicholas Ray Piersol of Marshalltown; four grandchildren, Ashton, Zach, Cadence and Harley; and two sisters, Cindy Murray of Iowa Falls and Crystal (Rich) Johnson of Tingley, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ray Piersol Jr.

ACKLEY—Eleanor Kramer, 85, of Ackley, died on Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, December 22, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ackley, with burial in the church cemetery. The Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley, is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Presbyterian Village in Eleanor’s name.

Eleanor Gertrude Kramer, was born on July 4, 1927 in Staceyville, Iowa, to Andrew and Anna (Merten) Hackenmiller. Eleanor was united in marriage to Elmo “Doc” Kramer on August 12, 1947. Eleanor enjoyed golf and was a member of the Ackley Recreation Club, Bridge Club, Red Hat Ladies and also the St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

Eleanor is survived by five sons, Tom (Eileen) Kramer of Aplington, Keith Kramer of Ackley, Larry (Pam) Kramer of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, Mike (Kelley) Kramer of Urbandale and Brian (Dana) Kramer of Urbandale; a daughter, Mary Ann (Tom) Wood of Iowa Falls; a sister, Sister MaryAnn Hackenmiller; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers, Ray, Clarence and Hubert; and two sisters, Isabel and Magdalen.

ACKLEY—Shane Porter, 36, of Ackley and formerly of Iowa Falls, passed away on Saturday, December 22, 2012, at the Ellsworth Hospital, Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held on Friday, December 28, at the Linn’s Funeral Chapel, Iowa Falls. Memorials may be directed to the family. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel was entrusted with the arrangements.

Shane Ray Porter, was born on November 16, 1976 at Boone, the son of Thomas Williams and Mary Porter. He attended schools in Boone, Iowa, Ray High School in Arizona and the Hampton Community Schools. On June 23, 2000, Shane was united in marriage to Dawn Marie Boyer at Estes Park in Iowa Falls. Shane was the manager of Route 65, Iowa Falls and then was a CDL truck driver for U.T.S. He formerly attended the River’s Edge Church, Iowa Falls.

Shane Ray Porter is survived by his wife, Dawn Porter of Ackley; his children, Kaytlyn Porter of Ackley, Stone Porter of Ackley and Blayze Wood of Iowa Falls; his mother, Mary McGrane of Superior, Arizona; three sisters, Kim (Jim) Graham of Superior, Arizona, Lacy McGrane of Mesa, Arizona and Megan (Noe) Cruz of Yucaipa, California; his grandfather, William Porter of Ogden, Iowa; uncles, Craig (Maggie) Porter of Des Moines and Mike (Penny) Porter of Livermore, Iowa; and aunts, Kris Peppels of Boone and Kathy (Brad) Allen of Perry, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Arlene Porter.

ACKLEY—Jennie A. Heitland, 82, of Ackley, died on Tuesday, December 25, 2012, at her home in Ackley.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, December 29, at the Austinville Christian Reformed Church, with burial in the Oakwood Cemetery in Ackley. The Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley is in charge of the arrangements.

Jennie Ann Heitland, was born on May 10, 1930 in Popejoy, to Eppo and Gertrude (Schweenrtmann) Bulten. Jennie graduated from the Iowa Falls High School and Ellsworth Community College. Jennie worked as a teacher, at the 65 Junction Truck Shop, Shugar’s and Waldorf’s grocery stores and as a greeter at Walmart. On February 22, 1952, Jennie was united in marriage to Wallace Heitland in Iowa Falls.

She enjoyed her grandchildren’s sports and events and was a member of the Austinville Christian Reformed Church.

Jennie Ann is survived by her husband, Wallace; a daughter, Cynthia (Robert) Burns of Iowa Falls; two sons, Jerald Heitland of Iowa Falls and Shawn (Amy) Heitland of Aplington; grandchildren, Adam (Shahna) Janssen, Alex (Danita) Janssen, Melonie (Paul) Lanceley, Melissa (Chad) Norenberg, Michael Burns, Sarah and Erik Heitland and Samantha, Austin, Sawyer and Aiden Heitland; great-grandchildren, Zackary, Abby, Brady, Charlotte, Levi, Blake, Ella, Suzette, Bonnie, Beau, Cole, Abby and Isabelle; and two sisters- in-law, Kathy Bulten of Garden City and Esther Hirth of Ackley.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jeffrey; and her brother, Larry Bulten.
