The following fall, Nada enrolled at Iowa State Teacher’s

She was a member of the
Bethany Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls, where she taught Sunday
School, Bible School and was a member of the Altar Guild.
The “real” Nada who we knew and loved left us many years ago
during her long struggle with Alzheimer’s. Because of this,
her family has decided, in lieu of services, to establish
scholarships for selected Iowa Falls-Alden High School
graduates in the class of 2013 who have chosen to major in
elementary education. The family requested no flowers
please. Memorials will be added to the scholarship fund.
Nada Bottke is survived by her husband, Paul Bottke of Iowa

James Bobst.
“One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of
a car I drove, what kind of a house I lived in, how much was
in my bank account, or what my clothes looked like. But the
world may be a little better because I was important in the
life of a child.”

June 13, 2012
BUFFALO, Missouri—Russell Stateler Dougan, 87, of Buffalo,
Missouri, died in his sleep on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at
the Mercy Hospital, Springfield, Missouri.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday, June 12, with Pastor Allen officiating, at the
Montgomery-Viets Funeral Home, Buffalo. Graveside services will be
held on Friday,
June 15, in the Cottage Cemetery in Iowa Falls. The Linn's
Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel is handling the local
arrangements.
Russell was born on
December 24, 1924 at Iowa Falls, Iowa. He was the son of
State and Esther (Lake) Dougan. Russell attended country
school and belonged to 4-H. He graduated eighth grade.
Russell drove a Model A Ford into Iowa Falls to attend high
school. He was in FFA. He was Health Champion of Hardin
County, Iowa, and within six weeks he was flat on his back
unable to move due to rheumatic fever. Dr. Wray came out to
the farm to examine him, and told his folks to take him to
the Colfax, Iowa, Mineral Springs Hotel and start him on the
mineral baths. He told about the big pitcher of mineral
water on the bed stand that he was to drink. Being a
teenager, he wasn’t going to drink that stuff, until the big
old nurse in her white starched dress and hat came into his
room. He decided he would drink the water. Russell graduated
from the Iowa Falls High School in 1942. His first
construction job was running a back hoe for Liittschwager.
Russell was drafted into the Army on April 18, 1945 and
discharged on December 4, 1946, as a sergeant. He served
with 97th Repair Squad – 22nd Air Depot Group, and performed
maintenance on all types of wheel and half tracked
vehicles. He was deployed to Okinawa to help rebuild after
the bombing.
His first weekend on Okinawa, Russell toured the whole
island looking for his brother, Arlo, who was with the U.S.
Marines. Arlo was playing basketball on the beach. Russell’s
camp was on the hilltop overlooking the beach where Arlo
was. It was a surprise reunion because Arlo did not know
Russell was there. After his Army discharge, Russell worked
construction in Florida. He met and married Rhoda Barker on
May 2, 1958, at West Palm Beach, Florida. Russell farmed in
Iowa before retiring and moving to Buffalo.
Russell was a member of the Iowa Falls American Legion for
63 years. He was also a member of the Buffalo United
Methodist Church. Russell enjoyed spending time at Sharpe’s
drinking coffee and visiting.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother and
sister-in-law, Arlo and Valda Dougan; and a nephew, Douglas
DeBaun.
Survivors include his
wife, Rhoda; one sister, Della Rae DeBaun of Phoenix; and

One- on- one fight reported
BY SARA KONRAD BARANOWSKI
June 27, 2012
Local and state
investigators are working to determine what happened
in a fight Friday night that led to the death of an
Iowa Falls man. According to information released
by the Iowa Falls Police Department, officers were
dispatched after receiving a report of a fight in
progress at 8:32 p.m. Friday. Upon arrival at a mini
storage unit on Depot Street, officers found
52-year-old Ronald Merritt Cook unresponsive. They
started CPR and AMR Ambulance transported him to
Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, where he was
pronounced dead.
Iowa Falls Police Capt. Dave McDaniel said the fight
was “one-on-one” with witnesses, but declined to
identify the other person involved. While no weapons
were used in the fight, McDaniel said one of the two
people in the fight was armed with an object that
was not a gun or a knife, but could be used as a
weapon.
Dr. Jonathan Thompson with the Iowa Office of the
State Medical Examiner said he performed an autopsy
on Cook’s body Saturday, but the cause and manner of
death are pending toxicology tests and an
investigation.
No arrests have been made and McDaniel declined to
speak about the cause of the fight.
The Iowa Falls Police Department is being assisted
by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
McDaniel said he expected more information to be
released this week.
