Dean Harley Roelfs
September 15, 1936-November
25, 2012
November 28, 2012
ACKLEY—Dean H. Roelfs passed
away on Sunday, November 25,
2012, at the Presbyterian
Village following a lengthy
illness. Dean was amongst family
at his passing.
Funeral services will be held on
Wednesday, November 28, at 10:00
a.m., at the St. John’s UCC in
Ackley. Dean was a loving
husband, father, grandfather and
brother to all who knew him. His
cheerful greeting will be missed
by many.
Dean Roelfs was born on
September 15, 1936, to Jarthy
and Dorothy (Heitland) Roelfs.
He attended the Ackley Schools.
On November 26, 1958, Dean was
united in marriage to Charlene
Harms. Dean was employed as a
carpenter with Whitey Meyer and
then Farmers Elevator Co. He
then joined Farmland Foods as a
hog buyer, moving to western
Iowa and eventually managing his
own hog buying station in
Pocahontas, Iowa, until 1977.
Dean then went to work for
Kerber Milling selling feed to
area hog and cattle producers
and in 1978 the family moved
back to Ackley where he
continued working for Kerber
Milling until taking a similar
job with Yoder Feeds of Kalona
until retirement.
He
enjoyed working in the livestock
industry and made numerous
friends and acquaintances in his
years of sales. Dean was also
very proud of his family and the
time he was able to spend with
his children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. He was an
avid sports fan and many knew
him as the guy who followed the
Chicago Cubs relentlessly. He
enjoyed attending his children’s
and grandchildren’s events that
brought great joy and
satisfaction to Dean and to see
the successes of working hard
and enjoying everything they
were involved in. To Dean there
was nothing better than his
family and in his life he always
put his family ahead of anything
else. Dean always had a love for
the outdoors and enjoyed riding
horses when his family was
young. In recent years he had
regained a love from years ago
of raising his beloved coon
dogs. He enjoyed his coon
hunting very much and had made
friends all over the country
with hunting and always sharing
a good story of great hunts he
had with his coon hunting
friends. Dean will be missed by
family and friends who knew him
as that eternal optimist and
knowing that all things get
better with time.
Dean is survived by his loving
wife of 54 years, Charlene;

Pocahontas, Jim (Kandi) Roelfs
of Ackley, Kevin (Jen Van Fossom)
