Loyal Hebrink, 79

APACHE JUNCTION, AZ - Memorial services for Loyal G. Hebrink of Apache Junction, Ariz. formerly of Lime Springs were held on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010 at the Desert Chapel United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be held in Lime Springs at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Community Center with a lunch to follow. Family and friends are welcome.

Loyal, 79, died peacefully at home Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010 with his family at his side after an eight-month fight with esophageal cancer.

Loyal Gerald Hebrink was born Jan. 2, 1931, in Fillmore County, Minn., the son of Mildred (Wesselink) and Ernest Hebrink. He completed the eighth grade in Foreston School after attending the "old stone" school in rural Minnesota. He belonged to the Evangelical Church in Cherry Grove, Minn. until age 28 when he joined the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. He later joined the Desert Chapel United Methodist Church in Apache Junction.


On March 3, 1951 he married Charlene Ratcliff in the Lime Springs United Methodist Church. He was called to serve his country on Dec. 4, 1951 and took basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. until being deployed to Germany with the Engineering Corps. He returned in November 1953. Loyal and Charlene started farming south of Lime Springs and later bought a farm north of Lime Springs and farmed there until 1976. Then they operated the F.S. station for two and one-half years and then he started operating the LP gas and fuel trucks for Cedar Valley Farm Services out of Davis Corners. He retired in 1997.

After spending two years as a winter visitor at the Palm Gardens Trailer Park in Mesa, Ariz., they purchased a home in Dreamland Villa and lived there for 10 years. Due to his declining health in June they moved to Apache Junction to be near their daughter.

Loyal is survived by his wife, Charlene; his sons: Richard (Brenda) of Lamont and Kevin (Janet) of Lake Mills; daughters: Margie (Joe) Pankratz of Phoenix, Ariz. and Debbie (Stan) Malone of Apache Junction; two brothers: Arlin (Georgia) of Harmony, Minn. and Jerry (Betty) of Cresco; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; an aunt: Pearl Hebrink of Spring Valley, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Earl Johnson, 76

LIME SPRINGS - A memorial service for Earl E. Johnson of Lime Springs was held at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. Inurnment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.

Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Earl, 76, died Monday, Oct. 4 at Regional Health Services in Cresco.

Earl Eugene Johnson was born March 28, 1934 the son of Thomas Johnson Jr. and Frances (McDermott) Johnson in Armstrong, Ia. He graduated from Swea City High School in 1953. He farmed in the Armstrong area until 1955, when he moved to a farm southwest of Lime Springs.


On May 31, 1959 he married Kareen A. Bowers. To this union three children were born: Steve, Kathy and Gayle. Earl farmed with his brother, Gailen, until 1979. In 1981 Earl and his son Steve attended Northeast Iowa Technical Institute, graduating in 1982. Together they formed the partnership Johnson Electric and in May 1983 they opened Johnson Electric & Hardware in Lime Springs. Earl retired in 2002.

Earl enjoyed many hobbies over the years including baseball, softball, bowling, golf, horseback riding, fishing, hunting and traveling. One of Earl's greatest joys was watching his grandchildren in their many activities. Earl was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs and served on various boards. He was a charter-member of the Lime Springs Saddle Club, and enjoyed managing and coaching the Chester Men's Fast Pitch Softball Team. He was a member of the Lime Springs Community Club and enjoyed volunteering around the community.

Earl is survived by his wife Kareen; a son: Steve (Jill) Johnson of Lime Springs; two daughters: Kathy (Tim) Lichty of Lime Springs and Gayle (Dennis) Burnikel of Holmen, Wis.; six grandchildren: Luke (Lindsay) Johnson of Racine, Minn., Chelsea Johnson of Onalaska, Wis., Joshua (Brittany) Lichty of Little Canada, Minn., Kalley Lichty of St. Paul, Minn., Kyle Burnikel and Nathan Burnikel; two great-grandchildren: Beau and Cora Mae Johnson; two sisters: Arlene Volding of Morton, Ill. and Mavis Rosburg of Blue Earth, Minn.; and one brother: Gailen (Judie) Johnson of Decorah; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister: Bernadine; and his brother: Don.

Robert Fenske, 70

PINEVILLE, LA - Funeral services for Robert "Bob" A. Fenske of Pineville, La. will be held at 1:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010 at First United Methodist Church, Pineville with Rev. Mark Martin officiating. Interment will be in Trinity Memorial Gardens, Pineville.

Visitation was held Tuesday, Oct. 12 at Hixson Brothers, Pineville from 5-9 p.m. Visitation continued from 11 a.m. until service time at the church on Wednesday.

Robert, 70, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010 at Rapides Regional Medical Center, Alexandria.

He attended First United Methodist Church, Pineville. Mr. Fenske was the manager of customer service for Dresser Industries, a job that he held for 48 years. Bob moved here from a small town in Iowa to live with his future brother-in-law, Carthon Thompson and became well known.


He was an avid sports fan with a passion for LSU. He made many trips with family and friends to watch the Tigers play.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years and 11 months, Jean T. Fenske; sons: Dunie Quiroz of Baytown, Texas, Butch Quiroz and wife Cynde of Lake Charles, Lloyd Alan Fenske and wife Angie of Monroe; daughter: Lona Jean Marshall of Pineville; brothers: Billy Fenske and wife Barb, Jimmy Fenske and wife Vicki and Larry Fenske; sisters: Jane Brandt and husband Jim, June Bauman and husband Joe, Judy Davidson and husband Steve; grandchildren: Joe Gagnard, Justin Marshall and wife Beth, LeeAnn Johnson and husband Blake, Caitlan Marshall, Lainie Quiroz and Drew Fenske; and great-grandchildren: Hunter and Hagan Marshall and Parker Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd H. and Pearl (Kuntson) Fenske.

Duane Koehler, 78

CRESCO - Funeral services for Duane Koehler of Cresco will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 15, 2010 at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco. Interment will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco and also one hour prior to services at the church.

Duane, 78, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah.

Duane Koehler was born June 10, 1932 at Fort Dodge, the son of Harry and Auguste (Hayungs) Koehler. He graduated from Swaledale High School in 1952. Following graduation he entered the United States Navy, serving his country in the Korean War. Following the service, he attended school in Des Moines to become a Journeyman Iron Worker.
Duane married Darlene Cook at Kankakee, Ill. To this union he had four daughters.

He belonged to Ironworkers Local No. 1 in Chicago, Ill. where he worked for 30 years. Duane moved his family to a farm south of Cresco in 1975. Duane loved to fish and play cards.

He is survived by his wife Darlene; four daughters: Roxanne Hendrick of Loveland, Colo., Bonnie Schroeder of Marshalltown, Penny (Scott) Schroeder of Richardson, Texas and Pamela Sowers of Marshalltown; 12 grandchildren; two brothers: Frank (Joan) of Mason City and John (Jean) of Waterford, Ohio; three sisters: Clara Sherrill of San Marcos, Texas, Karen (Gary) Peters of Clear Lake and Mary (Alan) Eggebraaten of Forest City; son-in-law: Don Schroeder of La Crescent, Minn.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter: Barbara; grandson: Dylan; his parents; two brothers: Harry (Pat) and Nicholas (Vietnam War); one sister: Rosella (Gerald) Schmidt; and a brother-in-law: Dale Sherrill.

Marjorie McGee, 84

CRESCO - Funeral services for Marjorie E. McGee, 84, of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco where there was a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Friends may call an hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Marjorie Esther Burr was born Feb. 6, 1926 in Winneshiek County the daughter of Roy and Esther (Sheppard) Burr. As was the custom in those days, they lived on rented farms near Lime Springs and Cresco.

She attended rural country schools and then graduated from Cresco High School in 1943. She was hired as the first female employee at the Cresco State Bank.


On Feb. 6, 1947, she married Raymond James McGee. They farmed in Orleans Township most of their married life. In later years, they moved into Cresco. Marge's final years were spent at the Evans Memorial Home which she called "HOME".

Marge worked for 22 years at the Elwood Law firm. Upon retirement, she continued tax work from her home for many years. She was involved with numerous church and community organizations.

Marge's priorities were raising her family and in later years enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a great challenge with Scrabble and Chinese Checkers and loved putting together jigsaw puzzles. She loved the outdoors, her gardens, flowers, reading and music.

She is survived by three daughters: Patricia (Thomas) Niess of Buffalo Center, Colleen (Kenneth) Jarosh of Spillville and Anne (Stephen) Igel of Rochester, Minn.; three sons: William (Vicki) McGee of Cresco, Michael (Danelle) McGee of Cresco and Joseph (Linda) McGee of Healdsburg, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Reva Shafovaloff of Pensacola, Fla. and Lois Powell of Alamogordo, New Mexico; one brother: Robert (Jean) Burr of Janesville; and sister-in-law: Lucille Burr of Cresco.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Raymond McGee; daughter: Shirley; son: James; and brother: Donald Burr.

PROTIVIN - Funeral services for Mary Hudecek of Protivin will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010 at Holy Trinity church in Protivin.

Visitation will be held today, Wednesday, Oct. 20 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Conway Funeral Home in Protivin. There will be a 5:00 p.m. Rosary and a 7:30 p.m. Scripture Service on Wednesday. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

WAYZATA, MN - Garth Lappin, an educator whose 36-year career was spent entirely in Anoka-Hennepin School District 11, died Set. 20, 2010 at a care facility in Wayzata. A private service was held in his hometown of LeRoy, Iowa.

Carrol A. Watson, 76

SARATOGA - Funeral services for Carrol A. Watson of Saratoga were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 15, 2010 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville with Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Interment was in Saratoga Cemetery in Saratoga.

Carrol, 76, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010 of stomach cancer at his home in the woods.

Carrol Allen Watson was born Feb. 9, 1934, at the family farm in Howard County, the son of Frank and Bernice (Jones) Watson. Carrol lived his entire life in the vicinity of his birthplace. He attended country school and graduated from Riceville High School.

On September 7, 1953, he married Evelyn Gray at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Chester. Carrol had a dairy operation and raised hogs. The Watson farm became a century farm in 2001. In 1982 Carrol and Evelyn moved to their present home. For the past 28 years they have cherished their life in the woods north of Saratoga, sharing their unique earth home and its surroundings with family and many visitors over the years, including school children. Carrol especially enjoyed following the daily activities of the abundant wildlife that passed by their windows each day. A highlight of Carrol's year happened each fall when his sons and grandsons gathered to hunt deer on their property. Carrol also enjoyed the many hours he spent cutting firewood.


Carrol's love of working with wood was evident during the years he spent as a carpenter and cabinet maker with John Koshmeder. In later years he was eager to repair, refinish and cane antique furniture. Carrol was happiest when his hands were busy. Carrol's last place of employment was with Mehmert's Tiling in Saratoga where he looked forward to the tiling season each spring and fall.

He was an avid wrestling fan.

Carrol is survived by his wife, Evelyn; three sons: Michael (Sheree) of Charles City, Timothy and Thomas (Teresa) of Saratoga; two daughters: Laurie of Winona, Minn. and Jennifer (Paul) Brausey of Spencer; nine grandchildren: Cory, Nicholas, David, Crystal, Joni, Madeline, Brandon, Joshua and Levi; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Elaine Jacobson of Cresco and Shirley Sizor of Waterloo; and many other relatives and friends.

Loretta Kleve, 68

WAUCOMA - A Mass of Christian Burial for Loretta G. Kleve of rural Waucoma was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 18, 2010 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. Nick March and Rev. Marvin Salz officiating. The pall was placed by her children. Lector was Heidi Kleve. Offertory gifts were presented by her grandchildren. Ranae Huinker was the organist and Janet Schmitt was vocalist. Special music selections were: "How Great Thou Art", "Here I Am Lord", "Be Not Afraid", "Lead Me Lord" and a solo entitled: "Pain is Over." Pallbearers were: Keith Jerdee, Dale Christensen, Gary Cuvelier, Darin Kleve, Matthew Dietzenbach and Eric Dietzenbach. Interment was in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Lawler.

Friends were to greet the family 3-8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with a 4 p.m. rosary and a 6 p.m. scripture service. Visitation continued an hour prior to the Mass on Monday.

Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Loretta, 68, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 13, 2010 at her home.


Loretta G. Kleve was born June 21, 1942, in rural North Washington, the daughter of Frank and Helen (Schwickerath) Gebel. She graduated from Lawler High School in 1960.

On June 26, 1962, she married Paul "Pete" Kleve.

Loretta lived in the Lawler area for many years, working 13 years as a school bus driver for Turkey Valley. The couple moved to Phoenix, AZ in 1986 until Paul's sudden passing on Jan. 1, 1987. Loretta then returned to Iowa, working as an independent sales representative for Sunburst Memorials. She managed the Sunset Motel in Sumner until retirement and then moved to the Waucoma area.

She enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards, and spending time with her family.

Loretta is survived by her special friend of 19 years, LaVerne "Tuffy" Blue of Waucoma; one daughter: Sheri (Clair) Dietzenbach of St. Lucas; three sons: Kevin (Lori) Kleve of Urbandale, Brian (Karen) Kleve of Phoenix, Ariz. and Mike (Heidi) Kleve of Martensdale, Iowa; two brothers: Francis (Darlene) Gebel of Lawler and Joseph (Diana) Gebel of Lawler; five sisters: Marilyn (Jim) Liebold of Rochester, Minn., Lucille (Francis) Reicks of Lawler, Leona Kriener of Cresco, Doris Balik of Protivin and Jean Hageman of Decorah; sisters-in-law: Betty Wurzer of Lawler, Alvera Kleve of Postville, Rita Gebel of Sumner and Mary Agnes Gebel of New Hampton; two brothers-in-law: Herb (Judy) Kleve of Calmar and Linus (Sharon) Kleve of Calmar; 10 grandchildren: Eric (Andrea), Matthew, and Jill Dietzenbach, Madison, Jordyn, and Karson Kleve, Andrew and Kayla Kleve, and Derek and Jaclyn Kleve.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her parents; two brothers: Leroy and Bob Gebel; five brothers-in-law: Marvin Kleve, Edgar Wurzer, Francis Burns, Ray Balik and Luke Kriener.

Richard Hellman, 71

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Richard J. Hellman of Cresco was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010 at Notre Dame Catholic Parish in Cresco with Father Dennis Cahill officiating.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Richard, 71, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010 at his home.

Richard Joseph Hellman was born March 18, 1939 in Waterloo the son of Victor and Marie (O'Connor) Hellman. He graduated from U of I College of Pharmacy school in 1962 and later returned to the U of I where he earned his DDS in dentistry in 1968. After graduation he joined the Air Force and was stationed in New Jersey at McGuire Air Force Base for two years prior to moving to Cresco.


On September 9, 1961 he married Darlene French at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waterloo. They lived in Cresco for 40 years where Richard enjoyed practicing dentistry for 35 years. After dentistry, and all his life, Richard loved to hunt and fish with family and friends. During his retirement he enjoyed spending summers in his cabin in Minaki, Ontario where he showed all of his grandchildren how to fish the right way, with night crawlers. He was a life time Hawkeye fan. Richard never gave up on his beloved Hawkeye football team even going to his last game against Penn State. He was a member of Notre Dame Catholic Parish in Cresco. Family was very important to him. He also enjoyed all the time he spent with his dental colleagues throughout the years.

Richard is survived by his wife Darlene Hellman; four daughters: Debra (David) Oldham of Anamosa, Diana (Armando) Carter of Rochester, Minn., Donna (Terry) Hovey of Mazeppa, Minn. and Darla (Curtis) Iburg of Coralville; nine grandchildren: Emily Oldham, Casey Hovey, Abby and Alex Oldham, Jayden Oldham, Noah Carter, Dallas Carter, Cole Iburg and Wyatt Iburg; his mother: Marie Hellman; three brothers: Ronald (Mary Ellen) Hellman of Waterloo, Joesph (Helen) Hellman of Washburn and Jim (Carole) Hellman of Cedar Falls; two sisters: Vicki (Wayne) Tappers of Shokepee, Minn. and Judy (Jerry) Kayser of Lanark, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his father: Victor Hellman in 1977.

Delbert Burris, 79

ELMA - Memorial services for Delbert D. Burris of Elma will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home Chapel in Elma. A private burial will be at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma.

Delbert, 79, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2010 at Cedar Health Center in Charles City.

Delbert Dean Burris was born Nov. 11, 1930 the son of Andrew and Ardina (Jones) Burris in Dallas Center, Iowa. He attended school in Linden, Iowa. Delbert enlisted in the US Army on Jan. 16, 1952 serving in the Korean War. He received his honorable discharge on Oct. 15, 1953.


On Oct. 2, 1954 he married Betty Clouse in Linden. They made their home in Elma, where Delbert was employed by General Telephone Company (GTE) until his retirement.

Delbert was active in his community serving as Mayor of Elma for two terms. He enjoyed fishing, fixing clocks and taking leisurely drives in the country. Delbert was a member of the Elma American Legion-John Frahm Post #597.

He is survived by his former wife, Betty Burris of Charles City; his children: Bill (Judy Zambori) Burris of Ashland, Wis., Allen Burris of Allison, Kimberly (Scott Augustine) Burris of Charles City; seven grandchildren: Melissa, and Amanda Burris, Brandon Hebert, and Jeremy, Amber, Tiernan, and Taivin Augustine; one great-grandson; two brothers: John Burris of Euclid, Ohio and Robert (Kathy) Burris of Indianola; and one sister: Jolene Parker of Panora, Iowa.

Delbert was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Luther, Clifford, and Junior; two sisters: Lucille, and an infant sister; sisters-in-law: Ann Burris, Ruthetta Burris, and Betty Burris; and brothers-in-law: Carl Parker and Tim Ritinauer. Delbert was also preceded by his grandson: Jesse; his wife: Krista; and their son: Adam Burris.

Allen Baxter, 59

ALTA VISTA - Allen L. Baxter, 59, of Alta Vista died on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010 at his home near Alta Vista.

Visitation was held on Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Chapel in Elma.

A private memorial service was held following visitation. A private burial will be at a later date. Rites were provided by DNR officers.

Allen "Al" Lee Baxter was born Sept. 25, 1951 the son of Gerald and Rosalee (Brauer) Baxter in Iowa City. He graduated from Stuart High School in Stuart, Iowa. Upon graduation, Al enlisted in the US Navy serving as a Medical Corpman in the Boston Naval Hospital. After receiving his honorable discharge Al worked at John Deere in Ankeny while attending Iowa State University. He graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fisheries and Wildlife.


On April 11, 1984 he married Joanne Wood in Marshalltown. He continued working for John Deere until becoming a Conservation Officer. Al first served as a DNR officer in Scott County, Iowa before the couple made their home in Alta Vista. He then served Chickasaw and Howard Counties until his retirement in 2009.

Al enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, mushroom hunting, collecting guns, and trap and skeet shooting. He dearly loved his grandchildren and walks in the woods. Al was a member of the Elk Lodge, Masonic Lodge, Fredericksburg Sportsman's Club, and Acme Gun Club.

Al is survived by his wife, Joanne; his children: Andrea (Bryan) Whitt of Sloan, Iowa, Angela (Roger) Harrell of Bettendorf, Iowa, Ross (Nichole) Baxter of Redfield, Iowa and Abby Baxter of Alta Vista; nine grandchildren: Lauren, Lucas, and Benjamin Whitt, Bailey, Mason, and Logan Hocker, Anthony, and Reese Harrell, and Daytan Petsche; his sister: Rosanne Masteller of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law: Mike Masteller.

CEDAR RAPIDS - Funeral services for Sister Mary Clementine Cashman, RSM of Cedar Rapids were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 25, 2010 at the Chapel of Mercy at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids. Interment was in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

Stewart Baxter Funeral and Memorial Services handled the arrangements.

Sister Mary Clementine, 96, died Friday, Oct. 22, 2010 at Mercy Hallmar Care Center in Cedar Rapids after a brief illness.

Sister Mary Clementine Cashman was born Feb. 16, 1914 in St. Cecilia, Iowa near Elma, the daughter of Clement and Lydia Sullivan Cashman.

PROTIVIN - Funeral services for Mary Hudecek of Protivin were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. Nick March officiating. Organist was Sue Panos, lectors were Karla Hudecek-Moran, Kellie Gallerani and John Hudecek and Lori McMahn. Kim Soukup sang a solo and the Czech choir provided the music. Gifts were carried by Martin and Karen Hudecek and the servers were Jonathan and Nicholas Johnson. The honorary pallbearers were the great-grandchildren. The pallbearers were Greg Hudecek, Jay Hudecek, Ed Hudecek, Mitch Hudecek, Eric Hudecek and Kristen Sparks. Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery.

Mary, 96, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2010 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Mary Hudecek was born Sept. 2, 1914, in Lipov, Moravia, Czechoslovakia, the daughter of Frank and Marie (Sedlacek) Pokornik. She attended elementary through high school in Lipov.

On May 17, 1932 she married John Hudecek at All Saints Church in Lipov. There they made their home and farmed. On December 24, 1937, John and Mary with their two sons John and Martin moved to the United States where Frank and Jerry were born.


Mary was a life long member of the Holy Trinity Church and Rosary Society, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Czech Choir, and a long time trustee of Western Fraternal Life Association. On July 8, 1989 she was the recipient of the 1st Governor's Heritage Fellowship Award "in recognition of significant contribution to Iowa's Cultural Heritage for the achieved and artistic excellence." That same year she was also named by the Iowa Arts Council as a "Master Artist in the Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program for her willingness to transmit her artistic skills and knowledge. She expressed her God given talents by teaching how to cook and bake certain Czech delicacies, and gave classes and demonstrated the unique art of Hardanger stitchery. Additionally, she made quilts and crocheted. And whenever you went in to her house, you knew she'd expect you to have a cup of coffee and at least one kolach.

Mary is survived by three sons: John (Mary Ann) Hudecek of Columbus, Ind., Martin (Karen) Hudecek of Cresco and Jerry (Shirley) Hudecek of Mason City; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; a son: Frank Hudecek in Kissimmee, Fla.; her parents; a sister; and two brothers, all in Czechoslovakia.

Arlys Richards, 84

HARMONY, MN - Funeral services for Arlys A. Richards of Harmony, Minn. were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 25, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Harmony. Interment was in Elliota Cemetery in rural Canton, Minn.

Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Arlys, 84, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

Arlys Ann Richards was born Aug. 26, 1926 in Canton, Minn., the daughter of Earl and Lois (Milne) Casterton.
