Frank L. Hammond

    Funeral services for Frank L. Hammond of Cresco were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010.
    Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.     
    Frank, 89, died on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010 at the Muse Norris Hospice Impatient Unit in Mason City.
    Frank L. Hammond was born Feb. 22, 1920 in Alta Vista, the son of Frank and Elsie (Sheetz) Hammond. He graduated from Alta Vista High School in 1937. From 1942-1945, Frank served with the U.S. Army Air Force in the front lines in the North Africa and Southern Italy theaters.
    After the war, Frank had a 38-year career in the creamery industry.     On July 11, 1968 he married Tamara Egorenko.
    Frank is survived by his wife, Tamara; brother: Fern; sister-in-law: Galina Caldemeyer; and their respective families.
    He is preceded in death by his parents: Frank and Elsie Hammond; a brother: Fay (1942); in-laws: Gregory and Alexandria Egorenko; and brother-in-law: Val Egorenko.


Virgil Buntrock

    Funeral services for Virgil Buntrock of Emmetsburg, formerly of Cresco were held Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009 in Emmetsburg.
    Joyce Funeral Home, Inc. in Emmetsburg handled the arrangements.   
    Virgil, 84, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg.
     Virgil Buntrock was born Aug. 29, 1925, in Vernon Springs Township, Cresco, the son of Fred and Anna (Smith) Buntrock. He was a graduate of Cresco High School and following his education, Virgil entered the United States Navy.
    On Sept. 16, 1950, he married Etta Tenney in Cresco. The couple made their home in Cresco where they raised their children until moving to Denver, Colo. in 1970. Virgil was a self-employed painter.
    He was a member of the Cresco American Legion Post 135 for 64 years and the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades. Virgil enjoyed golfing and bowling. 
    He is survived by his wife Etta of Emmetsburg; children: Patricia and her husband, Gerald Theesfeld, James Buntrock and his wife, Jan, Karyn Davis, Ronald Buntrock, and Denise Kirkwood; brother: Ralph Buntrock; sister: Cecilia and her husband, Dale DeSart; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his son: Dale; infant son: Virgil Jr.; his parents; and his brother: Harold.


Beacher E. Bollman

Funeral services for Beacher E. Bollman of Harpers Ferry were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010 at Living Faith United Methodist Parish, Monona Center in Monona with Pastor Dennis Gilbert officiating. Pallbearers were his grandchildren: Dale, Paul, Loren, Mark, Russell, Gary and Keith Jones, Cindy Moose, Rick, Ron, Don and Laura Bollman, Lisa Diersen, Kristin Osborn and Larry and Pat Enderle. Interment with graveside military rites was held in IOOF Cemetery in Rossville. 
    Visitation was held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.   
    Beacher, 93, died on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010 at his home in rural Harpers Ferry.
    Beacher Eli Bollman was born Aug. 21, 1916 in Ion, Iowa, the son of Charles Ransom and Etta Mabel (Deal) Bollman. He was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Ion and attended the Ion School. Following his schooling, Beacher began cutting wood and digging ginseng with his family and worked at Ed Heim's sawmill. He started farming.
    On Jan. 2, 1936 he married Beulah Grace McClintock at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Monona. Beacher and Beulah farmed together in the Ion area and also hauled milk and livestock for other area farmers. During 1945 and 1946 he served in the US Army and saw part of his duty in Germany. Following his discharge he returned to the farm. In 1956 they moved to Waterville, Iowa, where they operated Bollman's DX Station and continued hauling milk. In 1958 they moved to Cresco, and operated Bollman's DX Station and drove school bus at the local school. In 1967 Beacher and Beulah moved to Van Horne where he was the bus mechanic for the Benton Community Schools. They returned to the Ion area of rural Harpers Ferry in 1985 where he has lived ever since.
    Beacher was a member of the Methodist Church in most of the places they lived and was currently a member of Living Faith United Methodist Parish, Monona Center. He was also a member of the American Legion Posts in National, Cresco, Van Horne, and Harpers Ferry and a member of the VFW Posts in Cresco and Waukon. He had a life-long love of the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting mushrooms, berries and ginseng, deer hunting with his grandkids, and watching the birds and animals around his home. He was an expert when it came to the woods and could identify most all of the different plants and animals. During the mid 1960s he did some stock car racing with his son Boyd in Cresco.
    Beacher and Beulah enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, music and dancing. Beacher played the violin by ear. He traveled throughout many parts of the United States, and spent several winters in Arizona.
    Survivors include three children: Bonnie (LeRoy) Jones of Harpers Ferry, Boyd (Mary) Bollman of Cresco and Bev Bollman of Silverton, Ore.; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and 17 step-great-grandchildren.
    He is preceded in death by his wife Beulah, who died in 2007; great-grandson: Bill Moose; two brothers: Ferris and Lawrence Bollman; and two sisters: Delilah Schlitter and Violet Meyer.

    Funeral services for Hazel M. Davis of Cresco were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010 at the Saetersdal Lutheran Church in rural Harmony, Minn. with Rev. Maureen Hagen officiating.

    Hazel, 87, died on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.
    Hazel Marie Davis was born Feb. 19, 1922 at home in Fillmore County, Minnesota to Tollef and Olena (Hovey) Borgan. She attended a rural school named Hovey, and was a lifelong member of Saetersdal Lutheran Church.
    On October 25, 1940 she married John W. Davis in a double wedding with her brother Olaf and his wife Jean at Saetersdal. John and Hazel lived on the Davis family farm north of Lime Springs most of their married life. Hazel was an active partner on the family operation. She retired in 1996 after 20 years at the Evans Memorial Home, where she was a dedicated and caring nurses aid.
    Hazel was a loving and unselfish mother, putting the needs of her children before her own. She enjoyed doing embroidery, quilting, and gardening. Hazel was an avid card player and continued that passion in her year at Evans Memorial Home.
    She is survived by her daughter: Dianne (Gary) Kiefer of Ottumwa; son: Thom of Johnston; grandchildren: Lisa (James) Herd, Mark (Jane) Linderbaum, Aaron (Mya) Linderbaum, Kristi (Jeff Reininga) Kiefer, Brad Kiefer, Nichole (Dan) Stabile; great-grandchildren: Jacob and Adam Herd, Jack and Sam Linderbaum, Beck Linderbaum, Madison, Kaylee and Hayden Reininga; son-in-law: Dick Sobolik of Cresco; brother: Gaylord (Patsy) Borgan of Lime Springs; sister-in-law: Jean Mundfrom of Cresco; and several nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter: Kathleen Sobolik; her parents, brothers: Olaf and Foster; and a sister: LaVonne Keune.


Charles Robinson, 89

    Funeral services for Charles "Charlie" R. Robinson of Cresco will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. It was Charlie's wishes to be cremated. Inurnment will be held in Saratoga Cemetery in Saratoga
    Friends were to call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home and one hour prior to services today at the funeral home.   
    Charles, 89, died on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.
    Charles R. Robinson was born April 21, 1920 in Upton, Wyo., the son of Henry and Winnie (Sigler) Robinson. When he was two-years-old, they moved back to Iowa, where they lived near Saratoga and Lime Springs. In 1939, his parents purchased a farm south of LeRoy, Minn. Upon the death of his father in 1940, Charlie assumed the responsibility for operating the farm until it was sold in 1948. He then worked at Lee Teach's Service Station and later for Jack Fritcher, a local farmer and dear friend of Charlies. In 1953 he began working as a mechanic for Kratz Motors specializing in working on Oliver diesel tractors. He was well known throughout the area for his expertise. Later during his time working for Kratz Motors, he specialized in overhauling automatic transmissions for cars. He retired from Kratz Motors in 1982. After he retired he spent many many hours working on the diesel train engine in Beadle Park.
    In the early 1960s, he became a life-time member of Antique Acres in Cedar Falls. He owned several of the antique tractors stored on site. During their annual show, Charlie worked with the Steam Engines. He loved to give kids rides on the old steamers. For many years, Charlie spent the winter months in Missouri where he was also a member of an antique tractor club in Booneville. There are numerous stories floating around Iowa and beyond about Charlie and his love for antique tractors.
    In December of 1993, he married Blanche Smith. They lived on her farm near LeRoy, Minn. Blanche later suffered a stroke, and went to the Riceville Rest Home in 1998, later passing in 2008.
    He is survived by one brother: Henry (Junior) of Rochester, Minn. and two sisters: Hazle of Rochester, Minn. and Perry Blaser of Cresco.
    He was preceded in death by his wife Blanche; his parents; and his brother: Leonard.


Edith Rieken, 102

    Edith Bertha Rieken was born July 31, 1907 at Afton Township Howard County, the daughter of Adolf and Mary (Hahn) Arndt.


Arthur McCabe, 85

Funeral services for Arthur "Jack" J. McCabe of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Rev. Richard J. Ament officiating. Interment will be held in St. Agnes Cemetery at Plymouth Rock.
    Visitation was held at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services today, Wednesday at the church.   
    Arthur, 85, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010 at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco.
    Arthur Jack McCabe was born December 16, 1924 in Fremont Township in Winneshiek County, the son of Michael and Julia Flynn-McCabe.
    He attended the local school in Plymouth Rock until a debilitating eye problem arose and interrupted his education for sometime. At age 14, these problems finally subsided and he attended and graduated from the Braille and Sight Seeing Eye School in Vinton, Iowa. He completed his 12 years of schooling in six years. Jack also attended the University of Iowa.
    On Dec. 29, 1954 he married Lidwin "Pat" Lansing at DeSales Catholic Church in Ossian.   
    He was an avid White Sox fan. The White Sox brought him much joy in 2005 when they won the World Series. He also took pleasure in watching the Iowa Hawkeyes. But his greatest pleasure was when he was cheering on his children throughout their school sports careers. He loved playing cards and gardening. 
    He is survived by his wife, Lidwin; their children: Kevin (Pam), Terry, Steve, Alan, Patty (Don), Jackie, Joy (Tim) and Scott (Margaret); grandchildren: Travis and Jason McCabe, Keonna Flaskerud, Kendra Henry, Amber, Lauren, Taree Jo and Mara McCabe, Morgan, Montana, McKinleigh, Madison and Maillie McCabe, Nick, Leah and Julia Pizza, Ryan and Colton O'Connell, Christopher Pfuhl, and Courtney and Alec McCabe; and two great-grandchildren: Logan McCabe and Ashton McCabe.
    Jack was preceded in death by his parents; infant son; sisters: Maxine and Eleanor; brother: Flynn; infant brother; son-in-law: Phillip Pfuhl; and daughter-in-law: Kim McCabe.


 Lawrence Hruska, 92

A Mass of Christian Burial for Lawrence "Bud" L. Hruska of Lawler was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. David Beckman officiating. The pall was placed by Mark and Brad Hruska. Lector was Jaclyn Hruska Jacobsen. Verna Orvis was the organist accompanying soloist Mike Carlin who sang, "Amazing Grace", "On Eagles Wings", "Loving and Forgiving" and "Be Not Afraid". Jaclyn Hruska Jacobsen and Nicholas Hruska presented the offertory gifts. Pallbearers were: Michael Hruska, Jonathan Hruska, Paul Hruska, Richard Hruska, Larry Hruska and Steve Hruska. Honorary pallbearers were Chuck Vikdal, Clarence Kreiner, Dean Fisher, Allen Borlaug, Larry Jirak, Norbert Shileny and Charlie Orvis. Interment was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Reilly Ridge rural Lawler with military honors conducted by the Harold Redman Post #279, Lawler.
    Friends were to call from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31 at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton. Visitation continued at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday.

    Lawrence, 92, died Friday, Jan. 29, 2010 at Wellington Place in Decorah.
    Lawrence Louis Hruska was born January 16, 1918, in Ludlow, South Dakota, the son of William and Vlasta (Vavrock) Hruska. At an early age his family moved to Lawler, where he received his education in rural country schools. On April 7, 1942, Bud was inducted into the United States Army, serving in the 62nd Fighter Squadron. He was part of the Normandy air offensive receiving a Bronze Star.
    On December 19, 1947, in South Hampton, England he married Naomi Bicknell. The couple honeymooned in Switzerland. Naomi and Bud made their home north of Lawler, where they farmed and raised livestock, until recently moving to Decorah due to health reasons.
    Bud was a founding co-leader of Utica Lucky 4's 4-H Club, co-founder of 4-H Achievement Show Auction and 4-H Leader for over 25 years. Bud and Naomi were also inducted into the State of Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. He was a lifelong member of the Chickasaw County and Iowa State Cattleman's Associations and a 40 plus year member of the Lawler Legion.
    Bud is survived by his wife, Naomi; five sons: Michael Hruska of Charles City, Jonathan (Cathy) Hruska of Oxford, Iowa, Paul Hruska of Mesa, Ariz., Richard (Dianne) Hruska of New Hampton and Larry (Pam) Hruska of Lawler; four grandchildren: Mark Hruska, Brad (Bethany) Hruska, Jaclyn (Chad) Hruska Jacobsen and Nicholas Hruska; three great-grandchildren: Maya, Nora and Ella Hruska; one brother-in-law: Jim Cutsforth of Calmar.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Robert and William Hruska; and one sister: Margaret Cutsforth.


Donald Pecinovsky, 76

    Funeral services for Donald L. Pecnovsky of Fennimore, Wis. will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fennimore, Wis. with Father Bart Timmerman and Deacon Pat Jozefowicz officiating. Interment will be held in St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery in Fennimore. 
    Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service at he church hall on Wednesday morning.   
    Donald, 76, died on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010.
    Donald L. Pecinovsky was born Feb. 16, 1933 in Protivin, the son of Joseph and Martha (Strnad) Pecinovsky. Don was a single father of 10 until he married Ellen on June 22, 1968 in Tripoli, Iowa. They were married for 41 years. He was very proud of his accomplishment for being sober for 50 years. By getting his education in alcohol and drug dependency at Independence Iowa and Rutgers University in New York, he was able to help many people in his role as a drug and alcohol counselor. Don devoted his life to helping others change their life.
    His hobbies were playing cards, reading, listening to music, cooking, and crossword puzzles.
    He is survived by his children: Donald Pecinovsky Jr. of Dubuque, Roxelle (Steve) Doyle of Fremont, Calif., Ken Dennis of Darlington, Wis., Dr. Kimberly Tuescher of Darlington, Wis., Kevin Pecinovsky of Kalispell, Mont., Gregory (Sarah) Pecinovsky of Spokane, Wash., Laura Lynn (Rick) Watchorn of Eatonton, Ga., Alicia (John) Smitz of Franklin, Wis., Valerie (Mike) Schaefer of Verona, Wis., Darletta Rodriguez of Broken Arrow, Okla., one step-daughter: Sherry (Jim) O'Deen of Bixby, Okla.; 23 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother: Gerald Pecinovsky of West Des Moines; and three sisters: Judy Busta of Protivin, Matilda Milz of Cresco and Delores (Ray) Schmitt of Carlsbad, N.M.
    He was preceded in death by his wife: Ellen on Oct. 21, 2009; his parents: Joseph and Martha Pecinovsky; his brother: Richard Pecinovsky; and a sister: Elsie Schoeberl.

Helen Johnson, 103    Funeral services for Helen "Gladys" G. Johnson formerly of Decorah and Ridgeway were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 5, 2010 at Hauge Lutheran Church in rural Decorah with Rev. Nancy Solomonson officiating. Organist was Connie Bolson. Congregational hymns were: "Rock of Ages", "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Abide with Me". Pallbearers were: Norman Haugen, Michael Johnson, Bruce Nesset, Ronald Jastaad, Westly Johnson, Darrel Stoskopf and Vincent Thorson. Interment will be held in Hauge Lutheran Cemetery in the spring. 
    Visitation was held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and one hour before services at the church on Friday.  
    Helen, 103, died Saturday evening, Jan. 30, 2010 at Colonial Manor in Elma.
    Helen Gladys Johnson was born Sept. 14, 1906, the daughter of George and Julia (Korsen/Johnson) Jaastad. She attended rural school, Canoe Township No. 4 and later Valders College in Decorah, where she received her teaching certificate.
    In April 1924 she married Oliver M. Johnson, and in 1954 this marriage was dissolved. To this union four children were born: Vivian, Frances, Orville, and Sharon.
     Helen, commonly known as Gladys, after leaving the farm where she had lived for many years, worked at the Winneshiek Hotel, then for the Decorah Hospital, and at a summer resort in northern Minnesota, all as a cook, before her retirement. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, playing the organ and piano, and spending time with family. She was a long time member of Hauge Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, where she was confirmed in 1921.
     In 1993 she became a resident of Colonial Manor.
     Gladys is survived by her three daughters: Vivian Meher of Houston, Texas, Frances Stoskopf of Decorah and Sharon Haugen of Fort Myers, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 15 great great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other family members.
     She was preceded in death by one son: Orville Johnson on February 14, 2006; one great-grandson: Elijah Johnson; her parents; three sisters: Genevieve Allen, Ruth Allen and Mabel Agnes in infancy; and one brother: Gerald Jaastad.


Keith Dagit, 84

Keith Dagit, 84    Funeral services for Keith H. Dagit of Cresco were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010 at Cresco Community Chapel. Interment was held in New Oregon Cemetery, rural Cresco. 
    Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.  
    Keith, 84, died peacefully at his home on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010.
    Keith Hatcher Dagit was born Aug. 14, 1925, the son of Adolph and Lottie Belle Dagit.
    On June 30, 1950 he married Cora Faye Griffith. She died July 18, 2004.
    Keith graduated from Churdan High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He farmed most of his life. In 1995 he gave the "gift of life" a kidney to his daughter, Molly.
    He loved his church and enjoyed being with his church family. He loved to read the Bible and to discuss Bible prophesy. Over the years he and Cora Faye hosted many guest speakers and missionary families. He loved music especially older hymns and he enjoyed Iowa Public Television. Gardening, cooking, feeding birds and watching them outside his window and his cats made him smile.
    He is survived by a daughter: Molly (James) Goossen; a son: Scott(Deb); grandchildren: Caleb (Brittany) Goossen of Chicago, Nathaniel Goossen of Chicago, Libby, and Sam and Ben Dagit of Cedar Falls; a brother: Kenneth of Benson, Minn.; and a sister Norma (Mauritz) Anderson of Stillwater, Minn.
    He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and a brother, Carl.


Emilie Souhrada, 67

Emilie Souhrada, 67    Emilie M. Souhrada, 67, of Decorah died on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 at Wellington Place in Decorah after years of very poor health. A family inurnment service will be held in the spring at the New Oregon Cemetery, rural Cresco.
    Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah handled the arrangements.
    Emilie May Souhrada was born Feb. 26, 1942, the daughter of George and Emma Mary (Perry) Souhrada Jr. in Saratoga. Emilie attended Saratoga #6 and Orleans #5 and #6 country schools. She graduated from Cresco High School in 1960. Emilie worked for Turner Mortuary Equipment in Cedar Rapids, until she enlisted in the US Navy on March 2, 1962. She served in the Great Lakes area until she was medically discharged on Oct. 4, 1962.      Emilie married Earl Rupert in Ohio, they later divorced. She married John Shanego in South Dakota. She lived in Florida, Colorado and Minnesota. Emilie was a member of the 16th generation of the Decedents of the Mayflower.
    She is survived by three daughters: Kimberly (Dan) Elke of Gaylord, Minn., Paula (Joel) Estrada of Antioch, Calif. and Mary Marino of Fort Collins, Colo.; seven grandchildren: Joshua, Zachariah, Alexis, Jared, Adrianna, Alano and Maria; one great-grandchild: Reece; one sister: Rosemary(Gary) Knutson of Decorah; two brothers: Charles Souhrada of Fountain, Minn. and David (Rhonda) Souhrada of Madison, S.D.; along with many nieces and nephews.
    Emilie was preceded in death by her husband: John Shanego in 1990; her parents; one brother: Francis Souhrada in infancy; one nephew: Douglas Knutson; one niece: Lorena Souhrada; her grandparents: George and Anna (Coufal) Souhrada, Sr. and Bertram and Lydia ( Rowlee) Perry.
