LIME SPRINGS - A memorial service for Eugene R. Munkel will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 5, 2010 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Eugene, 82, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis.

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Agnes C. Shileny of Cresco was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco and one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church.

Agnes, 92, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010 at Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco.

Agnes Clara Shileny was born Nov. 4, 1917 in Bejou, Minn., the daughter of John J and Josephine (Strnad) Vlk. She moved from northern Minnesota to Protivin area around age 10, and received her education there.


On Nov. 7, 1939, she married Alois Shileny at the Holy Trinity Church in Protivin. They lived for many years in Cedar Rapids, where they owned the C.I.O. for 21 years. After Alois retired, they moved to Cresco, where she was a member of the Assumption Church, and the Altar and Rosary Society.

Agnes enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre, and was an excellent pie baker. Her family would always look forward to her baking.

Agnes is survived by her children and their spouses: Arnold and Nancy Shileny of Bettendorf and Patricia and Philip Metz of Uniontown, Ohio; one grandson: Aaron and his wife Lisa Shileny; and one great-grandson: Ryan Shileny.

Preceding her in death were her husband: Alois on July 15, 1975; her parents; four brothers: John, Frank, Joe and Henry Vlk; and two sisters: Caroline Jirik and Mary Vlk.

CRESCO - Funeral services for Doris M. McIntyre of Cresco were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 1, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Doris, 76, died Friday, Oct. 29, 2010 at her home in Cresco.

Doris Mae McIntyre was born Dec. 8, 1933 in Howard County the daughter of Charles and Goldie (Lucas) McIntyre.

CENTRALIA, MO - Memorial services for David J. Beaston of Centralia, Mo. were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30 2010 at the Fenton Funeral Chapel in Centralia, Mo. with Associate Pastor Hartley Wright of Woodcrest Chapel, Columbia, Mo. officiating. Interment was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 1 at the Calvary Cemetery in Elma with Father Ray Atwood officiating.

David, 28, died unexpectedly in an automobile accident on Wednesday, Oct. 27 in Centralia, Mo.

David James Beaston was born Aug. 10, 1982 in New Hampton, Iowa, the son of Steve and Peggy (Chihak) Beaston. He attended Crestwood High School in Cresco. He has worked for the last five years for Designer Landscape of Columbia, Mo.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, golf, softball and his family and friends.


He is survived by his parents: Steve and Peggy Beaston of Centralia, Mo.; three sisters: Stephanie Mai and husband Nick of Ely, Melanie Ondrashek and husband Bill of Cresco and Wendy Panos and husband Mike of Elma; maternal grandmother: Vincentia Chihak of Elma; and seven nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather: Ruby Chihak; paternal grandparents: Elmer and Charlotte Heying; and paternal grandfather: David Beaston.

PROTIVIN - A Memorial Mass for Irene P. Shores of Protivin will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. Nick March officiating. Inurnment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery.

Friends greeted the family from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at Hugeback's Protivin Funeral Home where there was a 4:00 p.m. Rosary and a 6:00 p.m. Scripture Service. Visitation continued for an hour prior to Mass at the funeral home on Wednesday.

Irene, 94, died Friday, Oct. 29, 2010 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Irene Pauline Shores was born June 14, 1916, the daughter of Frank and Mayme (Jirak) Kacher. She attended school in Ft. Atkinson and then graduated from Rudolphinum High School, Protivin, in 1934.


On May 3, 1938, she married Louis Walter Shores at St. John's Catholic Church in Ft. Atkinson. The couple farmed in rural Chickasaw County near Little Turkey until 1984.

During this time they were active members at Assumption Parish in Little Turkey. In 1984 the couple moved to Protivin and have been members at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband: Louis; four sons: Gerald (Carole) Shores of Dallas, Texas, David (Kathy) Shores of Winston-Salem, N.C., Linus (Karen) Shores of Holland, Pa. and Don Shores of Omaha, Neb.; eight grandchildren: Jeff Shores of Dallas Texas, Jill Wiggins of Richmond, Va., Jane Shores of Dallas, Texas, Craig Shores of Winston-Salem, N.C., Christopher Shores of New York City, Carla Waltersdorf of Albany, N.Y., Brian Shores of New Town, Pa., Jason Shores of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother: Melvin Kacher; and two daughters-in-law: Donna Bader Shores and Chris Bares Shores.

CLEAR LAKE - Funeral services for Joel W. Opat of Clear Lake will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 3 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes with Father Ray Atwood officiating. Interment will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 3:00 to 6:00 Tuesday at Conway Funeral Home in Cresco with a Scriptural Wake service at 3:00 p.m. Visitation continued one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Joel, 43, died Saturday, Oct. 30 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Joel Wesley Opat was born Jan. 31, 1967 at Rochester, Minn., the son of Wesley and Dolores (Ludwig) Opat. At the time of birth he was baptized and confirmed at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. At the age of four he attended Abner Hendrickson School in Decorah and was taught by Luther College students. Joel's parents were substitute bus drivers for the Howard Winneshiek School district and drove Joel 44 miles to Decorah for his schooling. Joel was a Cub Scout and later a Boy Scout in Decorah. He graduated from John Roberts High School in Decorah in 1988.


Joel lived on a farm with his parents near Davis Corners until he became a resident of Opportunity Village in Clear Lake. Joel had two favorite passions in life, Elvis Presley and elephants. He enjoyed pizza, motorcycles and frequent visits to his mother's home.

Joel is survived by his mother, Dolores Opat-Ludwig of Clear Lake; three brothers and a sister: Leslie Opat, Sr. of Lime Springs, Matthew Opat and his wife, Therese of Chatfield, Minn., Elizabeth Wiger and her husband, Clark of Decorah and John Opat and his wife, Peggi of Rochester, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father: Wesley J. Opat in 2001; a nephew: Christopher W. Opat who was killed in Iraq, June 15, 2010; paternal grandparents: John and Elsie Opat; and maternal grandparents: Matthew and Genevieve Ludwig.

Esther Flugge, 89

ELMA - Funeral services for Esther L. Flugge of Elma were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010 at St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church in Elma with Pastor Dan Christensen officiating.

Interment was in Saratoga Township Cemetery at Lime Springs.

Visitation was held Monday, Nov. 1 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Chapel in Elma. Visitation continued at the church for one hour prior to services on Tuesday.

Esther, 89, died Friday, Oct. 29, 2010 at Colonial Manor in Elma.


Esther Lucille Flugge was born July 29, 1921 the daughter of Albert and Katherine (Nagele) Bhend in LeRoy, Minn. She graduated from LeRoy High School in 1939. She attended and graduated from Minneapolis Business School in 1940. She was employed as a secretary at Minnesota Fiber Mill.

On Feb. 14, 1943 she married Harold Flugge at the LeRoy Presbyterian Church. They made their home and farmed in the Elma area. Upon retiring from farming the couple continued to live on their family farm until 2007 when Esther entered Colonial Manor in Elma.

Esther's great passions were quilting and embroidery. She also enjoyed gardening, her wildflower bed, playing cards, and Sunday dinners with her family. Esther was a member of St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her children: Janice (Daryl) Dybevik of Cresco, Barbara (Tom) Schroeder of Elma and Keith (Ellen) Flugge of Cary, Ill.; her granddaughters: Wanda (Jan) Becker, Laura (Chris) Zenner, Stacie (Matthew Burrington) Schroeder, Nicole (Nick Dockendorf) Schroeder, Lisa (Owen) Berendes, Michelle (Todd) Anderson and Katie (Michael) Sitch; six great-grandchildren: Samantha, and Jackson Becker, Sarah and Celia Berendes, Livia Anderson, and Beau Sitch; her sisters-in-law: Helen Shoars of Osage, Caroline Flugge of Kansas City, Mo., Lois Flugge of Elma and Viola Flugge of North Hollywood, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her parents; two brothers: Walter and William Bhend; and a sister: Louise Heimer.

SPILLVILLE - A Mass of Christian Burial for Margaret B. Busch of Spillville was held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating. Lectors were Sandy Praska and Connie Klimesh. Offertory gifts were presented by Marvin and Alice Philips and Shirley and Gordon Klimesh. Mass servers were Kyle and Seth Phillips. Eucharistic ministers were Susie Fjetland and Julie Buckley. Kristina Nienhaus was the organist and Dan Silhacek was the cantor. St. Wenceslaus Choir sang: "Be Not Afraid", "Only a Shadow", "On Eagle's Wings", "Going Home", "Pain is Over Now" and "How Great Thou Art". Pallbearers were: Steven Klimesh, Joseph Klimesh, Richard Klimesh, Allen Phillips, Pat Buckley, Mike Fjetland, Shawn Praska and David Nienhaus. Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in Spillville.

Margaret, 92, died Monday, Oct. 25, 2010 at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian.

Margaret Bessie Phillips Busch was born Nov. 23, 1917, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Landa) Pechota on the farm near Protivin. Margaret attended rural country school.


She married Ludger Phillips on Oct. 4, 1937 and to this union, two children were born: Marvin and Shirley. They farmed the family farm near Conover, until her husband died suddenly on Aug. 13, 1957. In 1961, Margaret moved five miles west of her farm, where she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and worked at Wapsie Produce.

On Sept. 17, 1976, she married Cletus Busch at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. They lived in Calmar, where Margaret enjoyed keeping her lawn beautiful. In 2002, she moved to Housing in Spillville and then to the Ossian Senior Hospice in 2004.

Over the years, Margaret enjoyed baking kolaches, crocheting, quilting, gardening, dancing, taking trips with Cletus and above all, she enjoyed her family and grandchildren. Margaret was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and Guild and in later years at St. Aloysius Catholic Church and Rosary Society in Calmar, and the Catholic Daughters of America.

Margaret is survived by two children: Marvin (Alice) Phillips of Fort Atkinson and Shirley (Gordon) Klimesh of Spillville; nine grandchildren: DiAnne (David) Nienhaus, Susie (Mike) Fjetland, Julie (Pat) Buckley, Allen (Tiffany) Phillips, Richard (Christy) Klimesh, Sandra (Shawn) Praska, Steven Klimesh, Joseph Klimesh and Connie Sue Klimesh; 13 great-grandchildren: Alyson (Brandon) Haugen, Nicholas Nienhaus, Kristina Nienhaus, Matthew and Lucas Fjetland, Jennifer (Jeremy) Gomez, Bryan Sloan, Kyle and Seth Phillips, Starlette, Brad and Ambriehl Klimesh and Peyton Jo Klimesh; three great-great-grandchildren: Ethan Sloan, Kaden Gomez and Tyson Haugen; two sisters: Beatrice Frana and Mabel Kubesh, both of Calmar; along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Margaret was preceded in death by her first husband: Ludger Phillips on Aug. 13, 1957 and her second husband: Cletus Busch on Jan. 9, 1988; one great-granddaughter: Ashley Ann Klimesh on Dec. 30, 1993; her parents; one brother: William "Bill" (Alice) Pechota; three sisters: Celia (Joe) Pizinger, Philomena (William) Svestka and Viola (Eldon) Mason; and two brothers-in-law: Ed Frana and Elvin Kubesh.

Aleatha Kruger, 89

CRESCO - Funeral services for Aleatha M. Kruger were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010 at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Riceville. Interment was in St. Peters Lutheran Cemetery.

Conway Funeral Home in Riceville handled the arrangements.

Aleatha, 89, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, where she has made her home since June of 2009.

Aleatha Marie Kruger was born Feb. 6, 1921 in Howard County, Iowa, the daughter of Bernhard and Laura (Weers) Schoenfeldt. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Elma. She was educated in country schools and attended the Elma Public School. When she was a freshman in Elma, she was the high school overall champion speller. She progressed to the County Spelling Bee in Cresco and became Spelling Champion of Howard County.


On April 28, 1945 she married Irvin (Pete) Kruger at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Elma. They made their home on the Kruger family farm in Afton Township, Howard County.

They were members of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Riceville, where their daughters were baptized and confirmed.

Aleatha taught Sunday School and was Sunday School Assistant Superintendant, a member and secretary of the Ladies Aide, and a member of the Afton Homemakers Club. She and Irvin enjoyed their "500" card parties with friends and neighbors. She enjoyed gardening and had an exceptional green thumb, especially with African Violets. Aleatha was honored as "Iowa Mom of the Year" in 1998 by a poem Karen submitted about Mother in a national contest. She was a country girl, living on the farm 62 years, where she loved watching the abundant wildlife.

She is survived by three daughters: Diane (Sheldon) Halvorson of Coupland, Texas, Karen (Mike Swanson) Kruger of Rochester, Minn. and Kay (Steve) Worple of Cresco; five grandchildren: David Halvorson of Plugerville, Texas, Debbie (Neely) Johnson of San Antonio, Texas, Michael (Angela) Worple of Mason City and Andrew Worple and Kaylee Worple both of Cresco; three great-grandchildren: Taylor, Blake and Christian Worple of Mason City; a brother-in-law: Charles Joachim; and a sister-in-law: Eileen Dishinger; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Aleatha was preceded in death by her husband Irvin on Oct. 10, 1980; a grandson: Blake Worple on June 17, 1998; her parents; and siblings: Harold Schoenfeldt and Mildred (Schoenfeldt) Joachim.

CEDAR FALLS - Funeral services for Ralph M. Houck of Cedar Falls will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post #49.

Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 3 at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m.

Ralph, 90, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010 at Bickford Cottage in Cedar Falls.

Ralph Merton Houck was born Jan. 11, 1920, the son of William E. and Mabel (Wilber) Houck at Indianola, Iowa. He graduated from Manley High School, Manley.


On May 22, 1950 he married Anita C. Weber at Riceville. He was a veteran of the World War II, serving in the United States Army. Ralph was employed with the Iowa State Patrol for 38 years, working in communications, retiring in December of 1985.

He is survived by one son: Joe (Joyce) Houck of Waterloo; two grand daughters: Nicole Houck of Coralville and Olivia Houck of Iowa City; three step grandchildren: Jenna (Justin) Brown of Indianola, Michael Staebell of Cedar Falls and Laura (Michael) Steen of Waterloo.

Ralph was preceded in death by his wife Anita on August 19, 1992; his parents; one granddaughter: Caitlin Houck; two brothers: William and Donald Houck; and two sisters: Jean Mc Kibben and Nina Tietz.

Lee Kintz, 74

CRESCO - Funeral services for Lee "Champ" Kintz of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010 at First Lutheran Church in Cresco.

Interment was held at 1:30 p.m. following services at the church.

Lee, 74, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wis.

Lee Clark Kintz was born March 22, 1936, the son of Clark and Beatrice (Harold) Kintz. Lee was raised on the family farm west of Chester. He graduated from Chester and continued to live there, working at the mill in Chester and Lime Springs. He resided at the Howard Residential Care Facility for the past 21 years.


Survivors include three brothers: Craig (Virginia) of Leesburg, Va., Damon (Roylene) of Cresco and Jerry (Corinne) of Alexandria, Va.; step-mother: Mamie Kintz of Austin, Minn.; step brother: Rick (Jenny) Hall of Austin, Minn.; two step-sisters: Darlene Koch of Austin, Minn. and Sharon (Joe) Stephani of Pine City, Minn.; six nieces and one nephew; and his loving family at the Howard Residential Care Facility.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one step-brother: Leroy Hall.

ELK RUN HEIGHTS - Funeral services for Clara A. Samec of Elk Run Heights were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 15, 2010 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating. The family placed the pall on the casket. Gifts were carried by her granddaughers. Marlene Pecinovsky was the organist and Miriam Humpal was the song leader. Pallbearers were Doug Hyke, Todd Hansen, Nick Hansen, Alexis Hyke and Kayla Hansen.

Interment was in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Protivin.

Visitation was held one hour prior to services on Monday at the Conway Funeral Home in Protivin.

Clara, 94, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010 at Manor Care Nursing Home in Waterloo where she had lived less than a week.


Clara A. Samec was born Dec. 6, 1915 in Howard County, near Protivin, the daughter of Charles and Anna (Hron) Hosek. She attended the rural school near her home, receiving her elementary education. Clara helped at home until she was married.

On May 29, 1939 she married Edward Samec at Holy Trinity Church in Protivin.

She lived in Lourdes, and then moved to Protivin where she lived until her husband died and then moved to Holland, Iowa to be near her granddaughter. After she felt she could no longer live alone, she moved to Elk Run Heights and lived with her daughter.

Clara was very independent and did everything she could do until she could no longer do them. She loved to cook and she made bread, rolicky and kolache until she was 91 years of age. She did crafts, crocheted, and grew African violets. Clara also enjoyed watching baseball and basketball, especially the Hawkeyes on TV.

Clara is survived by one daughter: Elaine Hyke of Elk Run Heights, Iowa; two grandchildren: Shelly (Todd) Hansen of Holland and Douglas (Vicki) of Evansdale; five great grandchildren: Alexis, Madison and Jessica Hyke; Nicholas and Kayla Hansen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; her parents; son-in-law: Leon Hyke; one brother: Vincent Hosek; and one sister: Adella Samec.

RIDGEWAY - Funeral services for Barbara "Barb" L. Marhoul of Ridgeway were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 15, 2010 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Mass servers were Lee Balik, Cole and ZeAnna Phillips and the lector was Jessica Djuren. Organist was Doris Thompson and soloist was Jeff Adams. The songs were "Amazing Grace", "Be Not Afraid", "On Eagle's Wings" and "How Great Thou Art". Honorary pallbearers were Barb's nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Brad Linderbaum, Duane Albertson, Mathew Phillips, Dave Bergan, Steve Hughes and Mitchell Phillips.

Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church Cemetery in Spillville.

Balik Funeral Home in Spillville handled the arrangements.

Barb, 39, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah from an apparent heart attack.


Barbara Lynn Marhoul was born Sept. 17, 1971, the daughter of Merlyn and Mary (Herold) Phillips in Decorah.

Barb graduated from South Winneshiek High School in 1990. She attended Winona State College in Winona, Minn. for two years and then NICC in Calmar and graduated from the Clerical program.

On April 17, 2004 she married Tom Marhoul at Riverside Park in Spillville. Barb has been working at Featherlite, Inc. in Cresco for several years.

Barb enjoyed genealogy, reading, hiking, taking pictures, four-wheeling, and her cats: Larry and Lucy. Barb was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. She most recently helped with putting the Spillville Community History Book together.

Barb is survived by her husband: Tom Marhoul of Ridgeway; her parents: Merlyn and Mary Phillips of Calmar; her step-mother-in-law: Julie Marhoul of Decorah; four brothers: Vern (Pam) Phillips of Calmar, Lloyd (Patty) Phillips of New Hampton, Tony (Julie) Phillips of Ridgeway and Ted (Rebecca) Phillips of Calmar; two sisters: Terri (Steve) Balik of Spillville and Becky (Josh) Ott of Spillville; one brother-in-law: Gary Marhoul of Eau Claire, Wis.; four sisters-in-law: Susan (Randy) Russell of Ridgeway, Linda Lacey of Fountain, Minn., Kathy (John) Blumer of Eldridge and Julie (Jeff) Lewison of Rochester, Minn.; along with many nieces and nephews.

Barb was preceded in death by her grandparents: Stanley and Lillian Phillips and Paul and Theresa Herold; one brother-in-law: Will Lacey; one niece: Brianne Phillips on Aug. 1, 2003; and father and mother-in-law: George and Loretta (Houdek) Marhoul.
