in life Merle was born May 25, 1925 near Republic, IA to Daniel and Ethel McGrath. He was the fourth son of a family of six children. While Merle was still very young, they moved outside of Nashua and remained there until Merle's sophomore year. Merle has shared many childhood memories of growing up beside the Cedar River and wooded area during the Great Depression. The family then moved to New Hampton and Merle graduated from high school there in 1943.

In January, 1944, Merle enlisted in the United States Army during World War II and fought for our freedom in the South Pacific and Japan for two years as staff sergeant. Merle was proud to be an American and would be the first to tell you not to take what we have for granted.

After the service, he worked briefly for Allis Chalmers Corporation in Kansas City , then returned to help his father run McGrath Implement in New Hampton. In 1947 he bought the family business along with brothers, Gene and Burke. Merle and Gene continued in partnership until their retirement.

On March 14, 1950, Merle married Ruth Simmons at St. Joseph 's in New Hampton and remained members of the parish throughout their married life. They spent the next 57 years together in New Hampton and raised five children there. Merle and Ruth enjoyed several interesting trips throughout the years, but Hawaii was always a favorite for them. Merle was especially grateful to be able to attend the dedication of the World War II memorial in Washington D.C. shortly before being diagnosed with cancer. Throughout the trials and tribulations of life, their marriage has served as a testimony that riches are not measured by dollars and cents but by the love and commitment of two people to each other and to their family and friends.

Merle has always been proud of his children and grandchildren and ready to help when anyone needed a hand. Most of us remember a time or two of hearing those familiar words “We need to have a talk!”

During his retirement he spent many hours in his workshop. His woodworking skills were enviable. We are fortunate to have accumulated many family heirlooms made by Dad that will be handed down to future generations.

survivors include his wife, Ruth; children Peggy (Roger) Patten of Zimmerman, MN; Mike of Fleming, CO; Steve of New Hampton; Deb (Denny) Franzen of Waterloo; and Shelly (Steve) Rothmeyer of Johnston; grandchildren Randy (Shelly) Patten; Matt, Josh and Jeremy McGrath; Dustin and Derek Franzen; Olivia and Luke Rothmeyer; great grandchildren Jack and Dan Patten; brothers Burke (Emma) McGrath of Palmdale, CA; Gene McGrath of New Hampton; Gerald (Rose) McGrath of Milwaukee, WI; a sister, Marilyn (Don) Rasmussen of Cedar Falls; and a sister-in-law, Mary Jean McGrath of Oregon, WI.
