Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, IA handled the arrangements.

Allen, 78, died Thursday, February 22, 2007 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County.

Allen Carl McIntyre was born May 21, 1928 to Vernon and Ares (Anderson) McIntyre in Compton, CA. He was one of nine children. As a young child, he attended elementary school in Dubuque, IA and eventually the family relocated to Bluffton, IA, where he helped his father as a hired hand. He then worked for Decorah Monument for a short time. He then enlisted in the Army in 1946 until his honorable discharge in 1948. Upon his return he met Carrie Evelyn Thorson.

They were married at Decorah Lutheran Church on May 21, 1949. Completing 56 years of marriage until Carrie's death on December 20, 2005. He was baptized on March 26, 1963 and confirmed on April 7, 1963 both at Orleans Lutheran Church.

At first Allen and Carrie worked at Wapsie Produce as well as other odd jobs for a short time until they accepted a share farming proposal with Chris Flanigan. After many years of share farming, an opportunity to become independent farmers arose, were he continued farming for the remainder of his life. Allen became a member of the American Legion in 2006. Throughout their life together, they shared in raising six children and taking in five foster children.

Allen's integrity led to rarely venturing from farming responsibilities. He, on occasion, would visit neighbors for a “friendly” game of cards or family oriented holidays and family celebrations. He would take the time with his children to play games, such as softball, volleyball and croquet in the front lawn. After chores were done, tiddlywinks, pick-up sticks, or a “good game of cards” were played. He was some-what of a prankster, “trying to get a rise out of someone” and Allen thoroughly enjoyed his fishing.

In his later years, Allen most certainly took time to “teach” those whatever he could about what he knew best. Allen would give whatever resources he had available to those in need. He also took great pleasure in the innocent antics of children and sharing in the laughter. Although, he would always offer freely, ‘lessons in card playing, to whomever didn't seem to know what they were doing,” his lesson would be not that there was a “winner” or “loser” but more along the lines of “being able to play their cards correctly.”

Allen is survived by two sons: Robert (Kathy) of Cresco, IA and David (Sue) of Madison, WI; four daughters: Judy Bergan of Cresco, IA, Angie Erickson of Decorah, IA, Julie McIntyre of New Mexico, and Gail (Jeff) Ayres of Ridgeway, IA; two sisters: Arlene Kintzle of Dubuque, IA and Bev (Don) Jackson of Kansas; two brothers: Jim (Doris) of Cresco, IA and Sherman of Kansas; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
