Peter Palmersheim

Funeral services for Peter Palmersheim were held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 28, at St. Pius X Church in Urbandale with Msgr. Joseph McDonnell officiating.

Interment was in Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines. Westover Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Peter, 88, died Monday, October 25, 2004 at his home after a courageous two year battle with cancer.

Peter Adrian Palmersheim was born April 29, 1916 on a farm in Howard County near Elma, the son of Peter and Anna (Biwer) Palmersheim. He was a resident of the Des Moines area since 1935. After graduating from Immaculate Conception High School in Elma in 1934, he spent a year in the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) in Cresco. He spent several more years as a civilian employee in the Iowa District Headquarters of the CCC in Des Moines. During this time, Peter spent three years in the Iowa National Guard.

He was an accountant at the Des Moines Ordinance Plant from 1941 to 1946. He retired from Armstrong Rubber in 1978 after a 32 year career in the accounting department, where he was Superintendent of General Accounting. He also ran a home-based income tax service from 1955 until his death.

On April 15, 1939 he married Ellen Green at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Des Moines. To this union seven children were born. On January 4, 1992 he married Genevieve Freidhof at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma.

He was a member of the Accountants Association of Iowa, the National Association of Tax Practitioners and the Institute of Management Accountants. He was also an active parishioner at St. Pius X, a member of the St. Pius Holy Name Society and a Eucharistic Minister.

He is survived by his wife Genevieve; five daughters: Sue Bishop, Sharon Sanders, Patti Nutting, all of Des Moines, Sally Duer of Runnells, and Mary Nordstrom of Marshall, MN; two sons: Pete, Jr. of Gig Harbor, WA and Greg of Des Moines; three stepdaughters: Judy Henderson of Atlanta, GA, Joanne Halverson of Spring Grove, MN, and Terri Thayer of Marion; three stepsons: John Freidhof of Spirit Lake, Leonard Freidhof of Lanark, IL, and Tim Freidhof of Osseo, WI; 23 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 12 step grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; and one sister: Gertrude Kelly of Charles City.

Peter was preceded in death by his first wife Ellen; his parents; two brothers: Mathias and Earl; and three sisters: Christine, Marie, and Esther who died in infancy.


Barb Dagit

Funeral services for Barbara "Barb" Dagit of Lawler were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 29 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating.

The pall was placed by her three sons. Interment was in Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery in Lawler. Pallbearers were: Deb Kout, Sue Sander, Steve Kipp, Daryl Kuennen, Dennis Rausch, Dave Nienhaus, Ernie Schmitt and Gary Schmitt. Honorary pallbearers were: Dean and Ellen Fisher and the staff of Schmitt Fertilizer. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Barb, 64, died Saturday, October 23, 2004 at her home in Lawler.

Barbara Ann Nienhaus was born June 15, 1940 in Fort Atkinson, the daughter of Alfred and Monica (Huber) Nienhaus. She was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic Faith at St. John's Nepomucene Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson. She attended Catholic grade school and graduated from Fort Atkinson High School. Barb also attended LaJames Cosmetology School in Mason City.

On June 13, 1959 she married James Dagit. To this union three sons were born. The couple divorced in 1984.

Barb had lived in the surrounding area of Lawler until 1968, when she moved into town. She had worked for the last 30 years in Jackson Junction, first at Kaiser Agricultural Chemicals and then Schmitt Fertilizer.

Barb was an avid Bingo player. She was fantastic at sewing, doing alterations, crocheting, and knitting.

She was a member of the "Friends in Council" Woman's Club, a 50 year member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, where she held office in the parish society, was a lay minister and also ushered.

She is survived by three sons: Justin of Columbia, SC, Jerry of Protivin, and Joe of Lawler; one granddaughter; three brothers: Ray of Fort Atkinson, Caroll of Calmar, and Dick of Fort Atkinson; and three sisters: Darlys Rausch of Fort Atkinson, Phyllis Kipp of Lawler, and Mary Kuennen of West Union.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents.


Charles Milz

Funeral services for Charles Milz of Cresco were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 28, at Notre Dame Parish - St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were his grandchildren: Kim and Jeremy Lane, Steve and Scott Milz, Kristi Bothun, Shelley and Matt Caughron, and Sherry Mayo. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Charles, 85, died Monday, October 25, 2004 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Charles Francis Milz was born July 6, 1919 in Howard County near Cresco, the son of Charles Patrick and Catherine J. (Steffen) Milz. He attended grade school in Bonair and the Catholic school in Cresco. He spent 82 years of his life farming on the same farm where he was born except for the time he spent in the service. He went into the Army on October 8, 1941 at Fort Des Moines. He was discharged on October 18, 1945 at Fort Bragg, NC. He then came back to the home farm.

On February 11, 1946 he married Mathilda Pecinovsky at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin.

Charles was a member of St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco all his life and the Cresco American Legion.

His hobby was watching baseball, but especially farming. In September of 1989, they had a farm sale, but stayed on the farm until 2001, when they moved to a Condo at Evans Memorial Home.

He is survived by his wife Mathilda of Cresco; one son: Tom of Stewartville, MN; two daughters: Donna Bothun of Birchwood, WI and Elaine Mayo of Lawler; six grandchildren; five great-grandsons; and one sister: Katherine Veach of Dubuque.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Joseph and Edward; and five sisters: Viola Schroeder, Florence Shea, Lucille Shea, Ruth Milz, and Opal Loney.


Burdette Keune

Funeral services for Burdette Keune of Cresco were held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 27 at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Gary Lee and Intern Paul Miller officiating.

Interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Lance Johnson, Jerry Moen, Jerry Keune, Gary Zidlicky, Brent Bronner, and Larry Fenske. Honorary pallbearers were: Art Zidlicky, Bill Fishbaugher, Norris Larson, Billy Walker, Lester Johnson, Arlin Bigalk, Bob Davidson, and Gary Lienhard. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Burdette, 78, died Saturday, October 23, 2004 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Burdette William Keune was born August 1, 1926 in Howard County on the family farm, the son of Amiel H. and Alma (Bronner) Keune. He was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical United Brethren Church. He attended rural school and also had some education after. He was drafted into the United States Army in World War II and served part of that time in Germany.

On September 12, 1950 he married LaVonne Borgan at Saetersdal Lutheran Church. They joined First Lutheran Church in Cresco. He served in various positions in the church, such as, trustee, building and grounds, and usher. He was a member of the American Legion, Veteran of Foreign Wars, and the Wildlife Club. He was a truck driver and had his own trucks for several years. After trucking, Burdette went into construction where he operated heavy equipment for 33 years.

He loved being outdoors, both in his work, garden, and yard. He enjoyed sports, especially football, hunting, fishing, and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife Lavonne; two daughters: Cynthia of Livermore, CA and Sandra Montague of Waverly; one son: Arden of Sioux Rapids; and one granddaughter.

Burdette was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Gordon.


Marie Miller

Funeral services for Marie Miller of North Washington were held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, November 1 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington with Msgr. John Hemann officiating.

The pall was placed by her two children. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in North Washington. Pallbearers were her grandsons: Michael Miller, James Miller, Jerry Miller, Ronald Flugge, Roger Flugge, and Rickey Flugge. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Marie, 94, died Thursday, October 28, 2004 at the New Hampton Care Center.

Marie M. Miller was born August 17, 1910 in rural Chickasaw County, near North Washington, the daughter of Peter and Mary (Diederich) Flick. She attended school at St. Mary's in North Washington through 12th grade graduating in 1928.

On October 6, 1931 she married William Miller at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington. They farmed southwest of North Washington on the same farm their entire married life. William died on November 9, 1993. Marie stayed living on the farm until October 1997, when she became a resident of the New Hampton Care Center. While there she loved playing Bingo and cards. On the farm she enjoyed planting her garden and taking care of her flowers. In her spare time she would embroider while watching TV.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Rosary Society.

She is survived by one daughter: Florence Flugge of Osage; one son: Leon of Ionia; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one sister: Agatha Schild of LaCrosse, WI.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband William; two sons: Jerome and Dennis; her parents; one brother: Cletus; and one sister: Genevieve Burgart.


Mary Schulz

Funeral services for Mary Schulz of Hampton will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, November 3 at the Hampton United Methodist Church in Hampton with Rev. Jerry Miller officiating.

Interment will be in Hampton Cemetery in Hampton. Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Mary, 71, died Sunday, October 31, 2004 at her home in Hampton of natural causes.

Mary Janet Schulz was born July 7, 1933 in Hampton, the daughter of Lawrence and Doris (Shroyer) Clay. She graduated from Hampton High School in Hampton.

On June 15, 1957 she married Dwight Bud Schulz in Hampton. She was a home maker. She was a member of Hampton United Methodist Church in Hampton, a member of the Red Hat Society and Mother's Club. She enjoyed monthly coffees with the class of 1951.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Rosary Society.

She is survived by two daughters: Janet Jensen of Ankeny and Julie Wilson of Cresco; one son: Steve of Carroll; six grandchildren; and two brothers: Tom of Reno, NV and Don of Hampton.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Dwight; her parents; and one infant son: David.


Keith Holm, Sr.

Memorial services for Keith Holm, Sr. of Riceville will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 6 at Saratoga Presbyterian Church in Saratoga with visitation starting at 12:00 p.m.

A luncheon will follow the Memorial Service and Graveside Services will take place following the luncheon. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Keith, 73, died Friday, October 29, 2004 at Regional Health Services of Howard County after a long illness.

Keith A. Holm, Sr. was born June 6, 1931 in St. Charles, MN, the son of Arba and Esther (Green) Holm.

On June 17, 1960 he married Camilla Chapman in Nashua. He was self-employed in sales for many years. Keith was humored, he said, that he was born one mile north of Saratoga, MN and will die one mile north of Saratoga, IA.

He is survived by one son: Keith (Ginger) Holm, Jr. of Lake City MN; five daughters: Althea (Peter) Falconero of Schwenksville, PA, Rita (David) Swenson of Glenville, MN, Marguerite (James) Wesley of Winston-Salem, NC, Mildred Broadwell of Naperville, IL, Esperence (Doug) Lauglin of Green Castle, PA; two stepsons: Mike (Linda) Ragland of Cresco and Chuck Kinney of Bloomington, MN; 23 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers: Roland (Edith) Holm, Gary Holm, and Steve (DeAnne) Holm; and one sister: Kathleen and husband Gerald.

Keith was preceded in death by his wife Camilla; his parents; one daughter: Barb; and two sons: Kevin and Kenneth.


Harvey Fishbaugher

Funeral services for Harvey Fishbaugher of Harmony, MN were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 29 at the Root River Church of the Brethren in rural Preston, MN with Rev. Mark Rader officiating.

Interment was in the Root River Church of the Brethren Cemetery in rural Preston. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Harvey, 77, died Monday, October 25, 2004 at his home in Harmony after a long illness of emphysema.

Harvey Carl Fishbaugher was born December 15, 1926, the son of John and Bernice (Scrabeck) Fishbaugher. He attended Bristol Center Country School. He was baptized into the Root River Church of the Brethren, and was a life long member. He was a farmer and lived on the family farm until retiring in 1991.

On April 19, 1953 he married Marlene Jacobson at the Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony.

He enjoyed farming and working with livestock.

He is survived by his wife Marlene; two sons: Douglas of Randolf, WI and Donald of Harmony; one daughter: Debra Finley of Chatfield, MN; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister: Phyllis Hageman of Harmony; and two brothers: Stanley and Bob, both of Harmony.


Charles Haugerud

A public visitation for Charles Haugerud of Harmony, MN were held on Saturday, October 30 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony.

No other services were held.

Charles, 23, died Wednesday, October 27, 2004 in rural Fillmore County, MN.

Charles Warfield Haugerud was born July 26, 1981 in Preston, MN, the son of Mark and Mary (O'Conner) Haugerud. He attended Fillmore Central Schools, and graduated in 2000.

He loved the outdoors, fishing hunting, and watching wildlife.

He is survived by his parents Mark and Mary; five brothers: Mark, Michael, Paul, Luke, and Howard; and one sister: Amber.

Ralph Teetshorn

Funeral services for Ralph Teetshorn of rural Ridgeway were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 4 at the Orleans Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway with Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson officiating.

Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ralph, 97, died Sunday, October 31, 2004 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Ralph E. Teetshorn was born December 13, 1906 on a farm near Ridgeway, the son of Eben and Pearl (Vance) Teetshorn. He was baptized on March 26, 1963, and confirmed on April 7, 1963 along with his brother and son-in-law. He attended rural school through eighth grade at Orleans School No. 5. Ralph then helped his dad on the farm.

On April 27, 1929 he married Enga Sophia Sandvik in Cresco.

Ralph continued to farm on the farm of his birth for 64 years. He also worked for Winneshiek County, grading roads with team and grader. He was active in community services and traveled extensively, buying and selling mules and horses.

He is survived by one daughter: Betty Livingood; one son: Robert; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Ralph was preceded in death by his wife Enga; his parents; his brothers: Earl, Vince, and Roy; his sisters: Edith Huhe, Alice Blumhagen, Marian Teetshorn, and Elva Teetshorn in infancy.


Dorothy Kitchen

Funeral services for Dorothy Kitchen of Lime Springs were held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 6 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco with Rev. Candraeah Carey and Rev. Linda Johnson-Prestholt officiating.

Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.

Bernard Roman

Funeral services for Bernard "Barney" Roman of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 6 at Notre Dame Parish - Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating.

The family placed the pall. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Honorary pallbearers were: Lawrence Peters, Richard Zak, Ray Valvoda, Arnold Schmauss, John Wacha, Jr., Ray Bieri, and Dave Corcoran. Pallbearers were: Gerald Haskovec, Larry Nolan, Jim Hedeen, Scott Voyna, Melvin Haskovec, Gary Nolan, and Alvin Voyna. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Bernard, 83, died Wednesday, November 3, 2004 in Rochester, MN after suffering a severe stroke.

Bernard James Roman was born March 7, 1921 in Howard Township, Howard County, the son of Anton Jr. and Elizabeth Rose (Knippling) Roman. As a youth, he attended country school and enjoyed trapping, fishing, and working for several neighbors.

He entered the U.S. Army Air Forces at Camp Dodge Iowa, on October 21, 1942 and was discharged as a S/Sgt. on November 24, 1945 at Sioux City. He served in the 2043rd and 2103rd Corp of Engineers Fire Fighting Group attached to the 8th Air Force in Great Britain, serving 18 months in England until May of 1945. Upon his discharge from the service, he worked in his father's blacksmith shop in Maple Leaf, served as township assessor of Howard Twp., and was appointed as the first Howard County Weed Commissioner in May of 1947.

On November 5, 1947, he was appointed as the first Howard County Assessor, to be effective on January 1, 1948, being the youngest county assessor in the state of Iowa at that time. He served 38 years as Howard County Assessor and when he retired on December 31, 1985, he was Dean of the Iowa Assessors and the only "original appointee" under what is now called the "Assessors Law."

On June 16, 1947 he married Viola Mary Peters at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in rural Elma. They became the parents of two children, Robert Bernard and Carol Ann (Mrs. Michael S. McGuire). They have enjoyed 57 years of marriage and three grandchildren: Michael (Mac) Roman McGuire (13), Kevin Bernard McGuire (8), and Alison Marie McGuire (5).

Bernard was a charter member of Cresco VFW Post #4561, a member of Cresco American Legion Post #135, receiving a 50 year Continuous Membership Certificate on March 15, 2004, the Knights of Columbus Council #1571, Notre Dame Parish - Assumption Worship Center, and the Cresco Wildlife Club.

His outdoor hobbies included hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening, camping, traveling, and working with his Brittany Spaniels. His indoor hobbies included playing cards, making soup, reading, and solving crossword puzzles.

He is survived by his wife Viola of Cresco; one son: Robert of Anamosa; one daughter: Carol and her husband Mike McGuire of Cresco; three grandchildren; and one sister: Merle (Mrs. George Vernon) Hedeen of St. Peter, MN.

Bernard was preceded in death by one granddaughter: Meagan Anne McGuire; his parents; and two sisters: Alice (Mrs. William) Haskovec and Velma (Mrs. Harry "Bud") Nolan.


Ruth Nolda

Funeral services for Ruth Nolda of Charles City, formerly of Elma were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 8 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Elma with Rev. Michael Parris officiating.

Interment was in Saratoga Cemetery in Saratoga. Pallbearers were: Roger Gesell, Justin Sells, Jody Schomaker, Arnold Tonjes, David Furbush, Billy Elliott, and Gary Gima. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ruth, 83, died Thursday, November 4, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN of natural causes.

Ruth Ida Nolda was born June 2, 1921 on a farm near Elma, the daughter of Paul and Wilhelmina Frieda Christina (Prinz) Bartels. She received her education at Howard County #4 rural school near her parent's home.

On January 17, 1947 she married Richard Nolda at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Elma. They purchased her parent's farm. They farmed for many years with her husband's brother Robert and father Jacob Nolda. Ruth resided on the family farm since birth and it was important to see it become a Century Farm. They later moved to Charles City so they could farm and Richard could work at Hydrotile in Nashua. They returned to the farm and then moved back to Charles City where she was living. Through the years she had been employed as a nurses aide at the New Hampton and Charles City Hospitals.

She was a member of the St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Elma and enjoyed working in her garden, crocheting and cooking.

She is survived by two daughters: Regina Elliott of Hallsville, MO and Rebecca Nolda of Rosemont, CA; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother: Rueben of Rochester, MN.

Nolda was preceded in death by her husband Richard on October 24, 1990; and her parents.


Urban Kapler

Funeral services for Urban Kapler of Phoenix were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 25, at St. Gregory Catholic Church in Phoenix. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Urban, 98, died Tuesday, October 19, 2004.

Urban D. Kapler was born January 29, 1906 in Ipswich, SD. He grew up in northeast Iowa graduating from what is now Loras College in Dubuque in 1929. He spent 1942-1946 as a member of the 25th Infantry Division, participating in the battles for Guadacanal, the Western Solomons and Luzon P.I. Following the war he spent seven months with the Occupational Forces in Japan.

In 1947 he married Dorothy Readhead in Detroit. They lived for the following four years in Grand Rapids, MI. In 1950 they moved to Phoenix and he took on the agency for the Metropolitan Refining Co., a distributor of chemicals for the internal treatment of water in heat exchange equipment. He followed his profession for the succeeding 40 years.

He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Marcos de Niza Council #1189. He served as Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator. He was also active in the Military Orders of the World Wars, serving as Commander of the Phoenix Chapter and also of the Arizona Department. Following the death of his wife Dorothy in 1986, he married Alice Morgan in 1990.

He is survived by his wife Alice; sons: David Morgan of Mormon Lake, AZ and Gary Morgan of Steubenville, OH; brothers: Clem of Cresco, Norbert of Ft. Atkinson, and Francis of Waterloo; and sisters: Sr. Elewyn of Dubuque and Zenetta Eckerman of Waterloo.


Herman Kapler

Funeral services for Herman "Ike" Kapler of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, November 10 at Notre Dame Parish - St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Conway Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Ike, 76, died Sunday, November 7, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City of natural causes.

Herman L. Kapler was born September 4, 1928 in Howard County, the son of Henry and Thekla (Holthaus) Kapler. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 until 1956. He farmed in the Cresco area.

On August 29, 1959 he married Helen "Bootie" Hanson at the St. Joseph's Church in Cresco.

He is survived by his wife Bootie; two children: Dr. Lisa Kapler (Keith Emerson) of Rockford and Maria Kapler (Robert Kennon) of Clinton; two grandchildren; and three sisters: Corrine Moudry of Protivin, Virgina Powers of Des Moines, and Annette Polashek of Cresco.

Ike was preceded in death by his parents; one sister: Marie Mackenberg; and one brother: Robert.

Melba Forsman

Funeral services for Melba Forsman of Fredericksburg were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 3 at Peace United Church of Christ in Fredericksburg with Pastor Laura Hucke officiating.

Melba, 93, died Sunday, October 31, 2004 at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.

Melba E. Forsman was born January 18, 1911 in Richfield Township rural Fayette County, the daughter of Elmer and Nettie (Nieman) Kilcher. Her mother died in 1912 and Melba was raised in Sumner by her grandfather, August Nieman and her aunt, Laura Nieman Ribbeck. She attended school in Sumner graduating in 1928. She then taught in rural public schools in Fayette and Chickasaw Counties for four years.

On June 29, 1933 she married Peter Donald Forsman at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner.

She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner until moving to Fredericksburg in 1941 where she later joined Peace United Church of Christ.

She enjoyed playing bridge, camping, and square dancing.

She is survived by two sons: Donald of Adel and James of Cameron, WI; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother: Eldred Kilcher of Alpha; and one sister: Ruth Diemer of Fredericksburg.

Melba was preceded in death by her husband Peter on October 29, 1985; her parents; her grandfather, August Nieman; and one brother: Paul Kilcher.


George Champlin, Jr.

Funeral services for George "Champ" Champlin, Jr. of Cresco will be held at 1:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, November 10 at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco.

Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

George, 93, died Sunday, November 7, 2004 at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco.

George Lyman Champlin was born February 27, 1911 in Cresco, the son of George and Abbie (Miller) Champlin. He was a graduate of Cresco High School where he starred in football and basketball and was a member of the undefeated football team of 1927 his senior year. He later attended the University of Minnesota where he played football and basketball. He played for the Fritz Crisler's Gopher team of 31, and Bernie Beirman's 32 and 33 teams, and was known as the "smallest quarterback in the Big Ten". Also known as the "Cresco Flash", George was one of the fastest scat backs in the Big Ten. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and earned a BA in 1934. He was one of the oldest living "M" men before his death and was a strong supporter of Gopher sports.

On December 25, 1934 he married Eunice Walker in Minneapolis.

He worked for General Mills in sales and advertising and is credited by many as the man that named "Cheerios". He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served in France and Italy during WWII as a gunnery officer and assisted the French Underground. He has two Bronze Stars. After the war he returned to General Mills. He worked for them for 20 years before joining Campbell-Mithun Advertising Agency in Minneapolis, where he worked until he retired as VP of Marketing in 1977. George's real passion was helping young people of all ages find meaningful employment. One of his many awards was WCCO's Good Neighbor in 1977. He was also given credit for bringing 1970 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Norman Borlaug, to the University of Minnesota. The credit was given by Norman Borlaug himself.

He was a member of the Colonial Church of Edina for 22 years. When he retired he and Eunice moved back to his beloved home town of Cresco, where he spent the last 27 years. He was instrumental in the restoration of the Cresco Theatre, and building of the north stands at Cresco High School's football field as well as many other civic projects. He was a member of Kiwanis and was elected to the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame in 1990. He was one of the first members of the Howard County Times Plain Dealer's Hall of Fame. He was a member of Cresco Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife Eunice; four children: George Charles of Hines, MN, Jill Meredith Newby of Bella Vista, AR, Gay Lizbeth Anderson of Frederick, MD, and Jan Ellen Lowell of Franklin, MA; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: John; and one sister: Ruth Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Patty Elwood Center.


Cyril Bouska

Funeral services for Cyril Bouska of Protivin were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 30 at Holy Trinity Church in Protivin with Rev. John Moser officiating.

Interment was in Holy Trinity Church Cemetery in Protivin. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Cyril, 87, died Tuesday, October 26, 2004 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah.

Cyril Albert Bouska was born February 6, 1917 in Howard County near Schley, the son of Ben J. and Nellie (Mikesh) Bouska. He attended school in Protivin and graduated from Rudolphinum High School. Following his schooling, he returned to the farm. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 3, 1941 and served in the European -African-Middle Eastern Theatre for the biggest part of his tour of duty. He was discharged on July 18, 1945. Upon returning home, he returned to farming.

On June 4, 1946 he married Catherine E. Courtney in St. Bridget's Catholic Church at Bluffton. They raised their family on the farm, even though they wintered in Florida or Oklahoma.

Cyril was a member of Holy Trinity Church, the Knights of Columbus Council #2744 of Protivin, the American Legion Post #605 receiving his 60-year certificate and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post #4561 of Cresco. He was an assessor of Sumner and Jackson Townships and was the Clerk of Sumner Township. Cyril helped to start the Protivin Fire Department and was instrumental in purchasing the first truck. He enjoyed woodworking in his spare time, but seemed to have little of that.

He is survived by his wife Kay; one son: Gary of Jensen Beach, FL; one daughter: Wanda Waugh of Bartleville, OK; and three grandchildren.

Cyril was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister: Mildred Fencl.


David Pimlott

Private family funeral services for David "Dave" Pimlott of St. Lucas formerly of Nashua were held on Thursday, November 4 at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua.

David, 60, died Sunday, October 31, 2004 suddenly at his home in St. Lucas.

David Lawrence Pimlott was born April 10, 1944 in Grand Valley, CO, the son of Rev. George and Alberta (Young) Pimlott. He graduated from Nashua High School in 1962.

On July 7, 1963 he married Patsy Maloy in Nashua. He received a B.A. degree from State College of Iowa in Cedar Falls and an M.A. degree from the University of Northern Iowa.

Dave taught for the Davenport Community School District for seven years before going into the plumbing and heating business. Dave held the Masters and Journeyman Plumbing and HVAC License. He worked as Mechanical Engineer at Clinton Electric in Clinton and Plant Serves Inc. in Mt. Joy before accepting a teaching position in Plumbing and HVAC at Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar (1991-2002) after which he retired.

While they lived in Eldridge, Dave was active with the Eldridge Jaycees and served on the Eldridge Park Board. He was a member of the Eldridge United Methodist Church and chaired the Pastor Parish Committee. Dave was actively involved with the beginnings of the apprenticeship program for "ABC" Associated Building Contractors. He was a member of the Professional Educators of Iowa. He had been appointed to an interim position on the St. Lucas City Council.

Dave enjoyed his retirement taking cruises with his family.

He is survived by his wife Patsy of St. Lucas; one son: Kenneth of Nashua; one daughter: Carol Hamann of Eldridge; three grandchilddren; his parents: Rev. George and Alberta Pimlott of Hiawatha; three brothers: Edwin of Ames, James of Cedar Rapids, and Walter of Andover, MN.

David was preceded in death by an infant son: Thomas.

Viola Tuchek

Funeral services for Viola "Vi" Tuchek of Elma were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 16 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Monsignor John Hemann officiating.

Viola, 90, died Friday, November 12, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of natural causes.

Viola Tuchek was born July 28, 1914 on a farm two and one half miles west of Spillville, the daughter of Michael and Victoria (Taylor) Tupy. She began her schooling at St. Wenceslaus Catholic School in Spillville and after receiving her First Holy Communion, finished her schooling at a country school three miles northwest of her home. After her schooling, Vi worked at home until her parents moved to town. At age 14 she went to work in Cedar Rapids where she worked various jobs for 10 years the last of which was for Governor Wilson in Des Moines. In December of 1939, Vi moved back home to Spillville.

On June 3, 1940, she married Reuben F. Tuchek at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin by Reuben's brother Fr. Edward Tuchek. They resided in Decorah and operated a tavern for a year and a half. After WWII, in 1945, they moved to Elma and operated the West Side Tavern and Sporting goods until their retirement. Reuben died on December 9, 1994. Vi later moved to New Hampton where she resided for three and one half years before moving back to Elma to reside at the Afton Oaks.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, Rosary Society, A.C.C.W., Mission Sewing, Legion Auxiliary, Colonial Manor Auxiliary, and the Elma Senior Citizens.

Viola was preceded in death by her husband Reuben; her parents; three brothers: Louis, Joseph, and Michael, Jr.; and two sisters: Emma Panosh and Cecelia Langren


Evelyn Nelson

Funeral services for Evelyn Nelson, formerly of Lime Springs will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, November 17 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lime Springs.

Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Evelyn, 83, died Saturday, November 13, 2004 at Mercy Hospital in Mason City.

Evelyn Laura Nelson was born November 19, 1920, the daughter of Otto H. and Alvina E. (Walk) Braun. She was baptized and confirmed at the Grafton Lutheran Church in Grafton. She attended grade school in the Grafton area, worked for local people, and in 1941 boarded the train for California and married Clifford M. Nelson on December 31, 1941 at the Little Brown Church Around the Corner in Ingelwood California.

After the war, they returned to Iowa and engaged in farming in rural Mason City, LeRoy, MN, and Lime Springs. Upon retiring, they left the farm for town life at Lime Springs.

She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, painting, St. Paul's Lutheran Church and circle.

She is survived by four children: Duane of Hartsville, SC, Myra Dierks of St. Ansgar, Delores "Lori" Praska of Protivin, and Marland of Garden City, KS; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister; and one brother.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Clifford; her parents; two brothers; and three sisters.


William Powers

Funeral services for William "Bill" Powers were held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 9 at Grace Lutheran Church in Des Moines.

Inurnment was in Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Westover Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Bill, 72, died Saturday, November 6, 2004 of a heart attack.

William C. Powers was born January 20, 1932 in Cresco. He graduated in 1949 from Cresco High School and was a 1953 graduate of the University of Iowa. He moved to Des Moines in 1955, and was formerly employed with Principal Financial Group for 38 years.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Powers; and one sister: Lucile Powers of Newton.


John Holmen

Funeral services for John "Al" Holmen of McIntire were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 13 at the McIntire Methodist Church in McIntire with Rev. Michael Carey officiating.

Al, 79, died Tuesday, November 9, 2004 at his home after an extended illness.

John Alvin Holmen was born in rural LeRoy, MN, the son of John Holmen and Alma Hegge. He attended local schools and later worked as a truck driver for a construction company in Hopkins, MN for 19 years.

On May 21, 1963 he married Florence Butterfield in LaCrescent, MN.

John enjoyed trucking and gardening.

He is survived by his wife Florence of McIntire; one son: John of Riceville; two daughters: Sharon Lange of Waterloo and Lori Kramer of McIntire; 24 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and six extended family members: Sharon Runde, Daniel Hockens, Judi Hanna, all of McIntire, Nancy Robertson of Minneapolis, MN, Kim Derry of Rose Creek, MN, and Sindee Koeings of Meyer.

Al was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers.


Marcella Lynch

Funeral services for Marcella Lynch were held on Wednesday, November 10 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma with Fr. George Karnik and concelebrants Fr. Marvin Salz, Fr. Raphael Ludwig, and Fr. John Barnes officiating.

Marcella died from complications from surgery in Rochester, MN.

Marcella Lynch was born November 29, 1919 in rural Fort Atkinson, the daughter of Anton and Mary Karnik. She worked as a waitress in Rochester and New Hampton.

On June 8, 1942 she married Hugh John Lynch at St. John's Church in Fort Atkinson. She worked alongside her husband in a variety of businesses including a grocery store, a locker, farming, a sale barn, and Lynch Livestock and the Highway Grill.

She belonged to Catholic Daughters of America, Homemakers Club, Historical Society, and The Jolly Old Timers.

Her hobbies and interests included gardening, baking, playing cards, bird watching, and traveling.

She is survived by her children: Tom of New Hampton, Gary of Waucoma, John of Manchester, Mary Jazayerli of Damascus, Syria, and Alice Fischetti of Cogan Station, PA; 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister: Angela Fencl of Lawler and one brother: Fr. George Karnik of Evansdale.

Marcella was preceded in death by her husband Hugh John; one son: Robert; her parents; and brothers: Leonard, Clarence, Ray, Charles, and Tony.


Luella Phippen

Luella, 92, died Monday, November 8, 2004 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient in Mason City from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Luella Marie Phippen was born June 25, 1912 near Alta Vista, the daughter of John and Caroline (Glaser) Kolbet. She received her education at the St. Williams Catholic School in Alta Vista.

On June 21, 1938 she married Clifford Phippen at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista. They resided in Charles City for a few years, then moved near Colwell, and later to a farm west of Alta Visa until moving to a farm east of Elma in 1948. In 1952, they moved to Alta Vista where they operated Cliff's Tavern until they sold the tavern in 1973. After their retirement the couple remained in Alta Vista. Clifford died in January 1975. Luella remained in Alta Vista.

She enjoyed playing cards, daily walks, and watching the traffic from her front porch.

She was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista, the Rosary Society and the Alta Vista Commercial Club.

She is survived by her three children: Marilyn Schwickerath of Mason City, Phyllis Nixon of Chicago, IL, and Ron of Minneapolis, MN; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers: Leonard of Charles City, Luvern of Charles City, and Leo of Elma, two sisters: Lois McAvoy of Elma and Lola Boss of Charles City.

Luella was preceded in death by her husband Clifford; one grandson; her parents; and two brothers: Louis and Linus.


Herman Kapler

Funeral services for Herman "Ike" Kapler of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 10 at Notre Dame Parish - St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Kenneth Gehling, chaplain at Mercy Hospital in Mason City officiating.

The family placed the pall. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were: Bruce Moudry, Brian Moudry, Dave Aga, Les Zapotocny, Duane Kuhn, and Pat Wilson. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ike, 76, died Sunday, November 7, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa in Mason City of natural causes.

Herman Louis Kapler was born September 4, 1928 in Howard County, the son of Henry and Thekla (Holthaus) Kapler. He attended school through the ninth grade and started farming at the age of 15. Realizing the value of an education, he obtained his GED at the age of 50. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 until 1956. While in the service, he was sent to Washington State to cook for a general, he cooked so well, the general kept him on his staff until a few weeks before his discharge. Following his return home from the service, he started farming again. Ike milked cows and farmed the same farm for 40 years.

On August 29, 1959 he married Helen "Bootie" Hansen at the St. Joseph's Church in Cresco.

He was a member of Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph's Worship Center, was on the Calvary Cemetery Board, belonged to the Knights of Columbus Council #1571, he was a life member and current board member of the Howard County Historical Society and was on the Preservation and Education Center Board, he was a Township Trustee for Vernon Springs, was a former member of the Howard County Farm Bureau, and spent 30 years working for the Farm Service Agency.

He was a Chicago Cubs fan, bowled for 50 years and was placed in the Bowling Hall of Fame. He also loved to fish.

He is survived by his wife Bootie; two children: Dr. Lisa Kapler (Keith Emerson) of Rockford and Maria Kapler (Robert Kennon) of Clinton; two grandchildren; and three sisters: Corrine Moudry of Protivin, Virgina Powers of Des Moines, and Annette Polashek of Cresco.

Ike was preceded in death by his parents; one sister: Marie Mackenberg; and one brother: Robert.


Elenora Ball

Elenora, 80, died Wednesday, November 10, 2004 at her home in Lawler.

Elenora A. Ball was born December 26, 1923 on the Bruess family farm near St. Lucas in rural Fayette County, the daughter of Joseph and Milla (Winter) Bruess. She attended school in St. Lucas and at St. Mary's Catholic School in Waucoma.

On July 24, 1959 she married Joseph Ball at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma. They lived in Waterloo from 1959 until 1974 when Joe retired from John Deere. They then retired to Lawler. Joe died on December 6, 1988. She remained in her home until her death.

She enjoyed baking, sewing, and cooking. She was also active in several area organizations including the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Legion Auxiliary.

Elenora was preceded in death by her husband Joe; her parents; and one brother: Lee.


Elinor O'Connor

Elinor, 91, died Monday, November 8, 2004 at the Scottsdale Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Elinor O'Connor was born May 12, 1913 in Williams, the daughter of Dr. Maurice and Edna (Sullivan) O'Connor. At an early age the family moved to Lawler where her father was killed in a horse and buggy accident. Elinor was a professor at Iowa State College and taught Textiles at Arizona State.

She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Care Catholic Church in Scottsdale.

She enjoyed playing bridge.


Gerald Owens

Gerald Joseph Owens, a long time resident of Cresco, died on November 15 in Phoenix, AZ, three days after his 90th birthday where he had been residing for the past 15 years.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Mary; one daughter; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren

Rosemary Wilken

Funeral services for Rosemary Wilken of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 22 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Michael Massa officiating.

Rosemary, 76, died Friday, November 19, 2004 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI from complications from surgery.

Rosemary Katherine Wilken was born March 3, 1928 in Douglas County, MN, the daughter of Frank and Rose McClellan. At the age of seven, her mother passed away and she was raised by her father's sister Mrs. Clara (Carroll) Hennings along with four of Clara's children. She attended school at Osakis and Alexandria, MN. Rosemary graduated from St. Cloud School of Cosmetology in St. Cloud, MN in 1947.

On May 27, 1949 she married John Wilken. They moved to Cresco in 1951 and lived here until 1990, when they moved to Bella Vista, AR. Shortly after John passed away and Rosemary moved back to Cresco.

She is survived by four sons: Douglas of Newton, Bruce of Cresco, Scott of Cresco, and Jeff of Cresco; one granddaughter; three sisters: Marcelene Peterson of Alberta, Canada, Audrey Thompson of Othella, WA and Janice Whiters of Osakis, MN, and special family: Gail King of Yorkstown, VA, Gary Hennings of Osakis, MN, Alan Hennings of Ashville, AL, and Mona Goolsbry of Modesto, CA.

Rosemary was preceded in death by her husband John; her parents; one sister; one brother; and two half brothers.


Neil Kahn

Funeral services for Neil Kahn Sr. of New Hampton will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, November 24 at the Williamstown United Methodist Church with Pastor Don Barker officiating.

Interment will be in the New Hampton City Cemetery. Pallbearers are: Deterd Korporal, Dave Leichtman, Brian Finnegan, Randy Liddle, Walter Wenthold, Jim Kish, Francis Best, Jack Sabelka, Rob Pennebaker, and Gordon Kammrad. Neil, 82, died Friday, November 19, 2004 of complications of heart disease.

Neil William Kahn Sr. was born November 22, 1921 on a farm south of New Hampton in the Williamstown area, the son of William F. and Frances A. (Ries) Kahn. He graduated from New Hampton High School in 1939. He went to work at John Deere and Rath Packing in Waterloo before he returned to the family farm three fourths mile west of Williamstown.

On March 18, 1945 he married Elva White. To this union six children were born. They later divorced. Neil married Evelyn Moore on September 21, 1974 in McGregor.

Neil farmed and also worked for the SCS office in New Hampton. In 1965, he went to work for the Rockford Brick and Tile Company and then in 1966, began working for Sheffield Brick and Tile, where he was a tile salesman and surveyor. He had the honor of being Salesman of the Year. While working with tile, Neil designed and patented the "Kahn Kombination", a tile outlet gate. In 1987, he and his wife Evelyn formed Kahn Tile Supply at the farm by Williamstown. He continued to sell tile up to the time of his death.

Through the years he also planted an orchard and with the help of a daughter, harvested and sold apples. Neil and his apples were featured on the Paul Harvey radio program.

Neil had served on the New Hampton School Board for several years and was president of the board for a time. He was an active member and served on the board of the Williamstown United Methodist Church. He had served at the church as trustee, treasurer and was the current board chair.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn; six children: Sherryl Paul of Lansing, Neil Jr. of Waterloo, Karen Kahn of Charles City, Evelyn Budweg, Mary Reisner, and Kimberly Havens, all of New Hampton; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother: Robert of Kansas City, MO.

Thelma Halverson

Funeral services for Thelma Halverson of New Hampton were held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 17 at the Jerico Lutheran Church in Jerico with Pastor Kent Dethlefsen officiating.

Interment was in Jerico Lutheran Church Cemetery in Jerico. Pallbearers were: Ryan Keating, Matthew Keating, Joseph Yared, Zachery Gangstad, Tyler Gangstad, Austin Gangstad, and Andrew Johnson. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Thelma, 91, died Sunday, November 14, 2004 at Mulders Health Care Facility in West Salem, WI.

Thelma Inger Halverson was born February 7, 1913 in a log home in rural Chickasaw County, the daughter of Otto and Hannah (Leifson) Hansen. She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian Faith at the Saude Lutheran Church. She received her education in rural country schools.

On July 30, 1930, she married Tollef Arthur Knutson They farmed in Chickasaw and Howard Counties. Thelma enjoyed crocheting, cooking, and baking.

Thelma was active in the Jerico Lutheran Church Aid and helped with many church dinners there. Tollef died on February 18, 1969. On April 18, 1970 she married James Lowell Halverson who later died on May 25, 1989. Thelma moved off the family farm in 1991, moved to New Hampton where she lived until 1999, then she went to live with her daughter in West Salem, WI and lived there until March 3, 2004 when she became a resident of Mulders Health Care Facility.

She is survived by one daughter: Hazel Schweiger of West Salem; four grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; one sister: Hilda Kelly of New Hampton.

Thelma was preceded in death by her husbands Tollef and James; her parents; her step father: Martin Borlaug; one brother: Dorius; and one sister: Inger in infancy.



 

Lillian Kalkbrenner

Funeral services for Lillian Kalkbrenner of New Hampton were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 20 at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton with Pastor Marshall Monthei of the United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment was in the New Hampton City Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Ed Severson, Arlin Severson, Jim Wilson, Jim Arjes, Randy Fike, and Wayne Moetsch.

Lillian, 85, died Monday, November 15, 2004 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Lillian A. Kalkbrenner was born December 12, 1918 in Richland Township, rural Chickasaw County, the daughter of Michael and Mary (Rehorst) Peters. She attended rural country schools and the New Hampton Community School.

On December 15, 1942, she married Laurence Kalkbrenner. They lived their entire lives in New Hampton. She worked as a dietician for the former St. Joseph Community Hospital in New Hampton for 17 years. Laurence died on January 7, 1980. She lived in her home until May of this year when she became a resident at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Lillian was preceded in death by her husband Laurence; her parents; one sister: Mabel Wilson; and six brothers: George, Glenn, Jack, Clinton, Clyde, and Vincent.
