Wayne Erickson

Funeral services for Wayne R. Erickson of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 1 at Notre Dame Parish - Assumption Worsbip Center in Cresco with interment in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Conway Funeral Home in Cresco. There will be a 6:30 p.m. Scripture service on Wednesday. There will be visitation at the church on Thursday one hour prior to services.

Wayne, 61, died Sunday, March 28, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Arthur Pecinovsky

Funeral services for Arthur E. Pecinovsky will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 31 at Notre Dame Parish - St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Conway Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Arthur, 93, died Saturday, March 27, 2004 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

John Fenske

Funeral services for John Fenske of Cresco were held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 29 at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Gary Lee and Intern Jerleen Schlesser officiating.

Inurnment will be at a later date in New Oregon Cemetery. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

John, 48, died Thursday, March 25, 2004 at his residence in Cresco.

John Arthur Fenske was born May 4, 1955 in Cresco, the son of William J. and Rosella G. (Opat) Fenske. John lived in Howard County for a good share of his life.

In 1984, he married Lisa Riha. They were later divorced. To this union one child was born, Melissa Sue.

John was a craftsman, a "Jack of all trades".

He loved nature. His hobbies included writing poetry, baking, gardening, collecting things from nature, fishing, camping, canoeing, swimming and sewing. He was extremely proud of his garden and would share any excess produce.

He is survived by one daughter: Melissa Mayberrry of Ames; his mother: Rose Fenske of Cresco; his brothers and sisters: Shirley McKinley of Rochester, MN, Linda Hovey of Harmony, MN, Betty Leitz of Tomahawk, WI, Dale of Protivin, Barbara Lickteig of Cresco, Rick of Cresco, Connie Fenske of Ridgeway, and Dan of Nashua; and his maternal grandmother: Olena Opat of Cresco.

John was preceded in death by his father: William; one brother: Floyd; his paternal grandparents: Ruth D. Fenske, and Henry T. Fenske; and his maternal grandfather: Frank J. Opat.

Charles Richardson

Funeral services for Charles Richardson were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 29 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville with Rev. Ray Atwood officiating.

The pall was placed by his grandchildren: Susan Smalley, Kristy Cain, and Tamie Stahl and god child: Jean Pickar. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville. Pallbearers were his grandsons: Steve and Tom Anderlik, James, Dean, Darrell, David, and Lonnie Richardson, and Mark Springer. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Charles, 94, died Thursday, March 25, 2004 at the Riceville Community Rest Home where he had made his home since November of 2002.

Charles Henry Richardson was born June 17, 1909 in Howard County, near Elma, the son of James Francis and Amanda Mary (Weakland) Richardson. He received his education in the rural school near his home and following his schooling, he worked on the farm.

On October 17, 1933 he married Cecelia O'Brien at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma. They made their home on a farm between Riceville and Elma until 1958, when they moved into Riceville and he started trucking. He hauled fuel for over 17 years for Co-op Oil.

Charles enjoyed tinkering with wood, playing cards, watching his grandchildren in sports, and doing odd jobs for the church and cemetery.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his children: Irene Anderlik of Riceville and William of Hayfield, MN; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren and one sister: Loretta Gansen of Lime Springs.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife: Cecelia; one son: Leland; one daughter: DeLores Stiver; one grandson; two brothers: Arthur and Raymond; and an infant sister: Irene Richardson.

Matt Riha

Funeral services for Matthias "Matt" Riha of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 27 at the Notre Dame Parish - St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating.

Matt, 80, died Thursday, March 25, 2004 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco.

Matthias Thomas Riha was born June 7, 1923 in Fort Atkinson, the son of Frank and Mary (Franzen) Riha. He attended grade school at St. Lukes School in St. Lucas. He entered the Air Force on May 20, 1946 at Fort Snelling, MN, serving as an auto mechanic. He was a Corporal with the 78th Motor Vehicle Squadron, doing a tour in Manila, Phillipine Islands. On April 28, 1949, he was discharged at Hamilton Air Force Base, Hamilton, CA.

On October 3, 1953 he married Mary C. McEnaney at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma. They farmed from 1954 until 1981. After their retirement they moved on an acreage at the south edge of Cresco. They moved into an apartment in Cresco this past fall.

He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He liked to fish, hunt squirrels, and play cards. In his younger years, he played town ball and still liked to listen to the Twins baseball games. He loved to tinker in his tool shop. He is survived by his wife Mary; three sons: Kevin of Waseca, MN, Steven and Patrick, both of Cresco; one daughter: Lisa Mayberry of Ames; 11 grandchildren; four brothers: James Croatt of St. Lucas, Leonard Riha of Madison, WI and Francis Riha and Daniel Riha, both of Waucoma; and one sister: Barbara Jirak of Fort Atkinson.

Matt was preceded in death by one son: Brian; one daughter: Linda; one brother: Edward Riha; and two sisters: Loretta Rausch and Angela Brannon.

Helen Doherty

Funeral services for Helen Doherty were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 25 at the Assumption Catholic Church in Canton, MN with Msgr. Donald J Schmitz and Rev. Donald J Hawes officiating.

Interment was in St. Agnes Cemetery in Plymouth Rock. Honorary pallbearer was: Charlene Gideon. Pallbearers were: Patrick Mahoney, Shawn Mahoney, Terry Mahoney, Darin Doherty, Shane Doherty, Kevin Milz, and Peter Doherty. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Helen, 94, died Monday, March 22, 2004 at the Seasons Hospice in Rochester, MN.

Helen E. Doherty was born June 6, 1909 in Plymouth Rock, the daughter of Michael Francis and Anastasia (Gossman) McCabe. She attended high school at Sacred Heart Academy, a boarding school, in Cedar Rapids, graduating in June of 1927. She returned to the home farm to keep house for her widowed father, her mother died in 1924.

On June 2, 1936 she married Leo P. Doherty at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Plymouth Rock, they moved to Cresco where Leo was employed by the county. They moved back to the farm in 1942. Helen lived on the farm until she was 91, when she moved into an apartment in Canton Manor.

Her hobbies were dancing, gardening, mowing lawn and doing fancy work.

She is survived by her children: Connie Mahoney of Independence, Carroll of Rochester, MN, Beth Ask of Rochester, MN Robert of Preston, MN, Kay Kubik of Rochester, MN, and Colleen Milz of Rochester, MN; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband Leo on March 3, 1979; one son: Gregrory; one granddaughter; four brothers: Anthony, Leo, Avitus, and Raymond; and two sisters: Madeline Henry and Bernadette Taylor.

Aloysius Gerleman

Aloysius, 85, died Sunday, March 28, 2004 at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.

Gertrude Sovereign

Funeral services for Gertrude Sovereign, formerly of Cresco were held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24 at the First Congregational Church in Cresco with Rev. Tim Sir officiating.

Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Gertrude, 98, died Saturday, March 20, 2004 at the Crestview Care Center in West Branch.

Gertrude Grace Kniffen was born March 31, 1905 on a farm near Chester, the daughter of Frank Main Kniffen and Edith Delaphine (Tibbals) Kniffen. She attended country school and upon graduation from Chester High School attended ISTC (University of Northern Iowa) for one semester.

During her many years in Cresco, she was a member of First Congregational Church, active in the Order of the Eastern Star as Worthy Matron and served on county boards during World War II. Gertrude was more recently a member of Mayflower Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in Cedar Rapids having descended from three Patriots who served during the American Revolution.

At retirement in 1968, Claude and Gertrdue moved to Hiawatha, where they lived until March, 2001. She has been a resident of Crestview Care Center in West Branch for the past three years.

She is survived by one daughter: LaVerne Larson of Iowa City; one son: Oakley of Grand Rapids, MI; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and one sister: Dorothy Jensen of Fresno, CA.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband Claude in February of 1995; one daughter: Gwendolyn Kratz; her parents; three brothers: Donald, Frank, and Lloyd; and one sister: Virginia Madsen Ellison.

Glenn Dinger

Funeral services for Glenn Dinger of Riceville were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 27 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville with Rev. Michael Parris officiating.

Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Glenn, 73, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Glenn Lyle Dinger was born November 1, 1930 in Milaca, MN the son of Lyle and Hazel Brotten (Aanerud) Dinger. Glenn attended schools in Breckenridge, MN until the ninth grade, and moved to Riceville with his family graduating from Riceville High School in 1949.

On June 2, 1951 he married Lois Klobassa at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville. Glenn joined the U.S. Air Force on January 6, 1951 serving in England until January of 1955. He worked as a rural mail carrier for 40 years for the U.S. Postal Service.

On June 29, 1989 he married Elizabeth Berge at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth of Riceville; his four children: Beth Dinger of LeRoy, MN, Brenda Singlestad of Lake Mills, Paul of Minneapolis, MN, and Susan Swancutt of Manly; his first wife: Lois Klobassa of Riceville; three stepchildren: Theone Quattlebaum of Spencer, Jason Vulk of Des Moines, and Ryan Vulk of San Francisco, CA; six grandchildren; two half brothers: Larry of Pohnpei, Micronesia and John of Washington D.C.; and a half sister: Jan Duggan of LaCrescent, MN.

Glenn was preceded in death by one grandson; his parents; his stepmother: Lauraine Dinger; and a half brother: Douglas Aanerud.

Beryl Cartwright

Interment for Beryl Cartwright will be held at Leon Cemetery in Leon, IA at a later date.

Beryl, 88, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Beryl Louisa Cartwright was born June 14, 1915 in Woodland, the daughter of George and Goldie Bethards.

On February 14, 1935 she married Chester Cartwright at Corydon. They spent most of their lives in Decatur and Clarke Counties and moved to Cresco in 2000 due to failing health.

Beryl loved to garden, cook, and bake. She was an Avon representative for many years.

She is survived by her husband Chester of Cresco; two daughters: Janet of Ft. Atkinson and Nancy Shearer of Centennial, CO; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three brothers: Raymond of Albany, OR, Harry of Seymour, and Richard of New Virginia.

Beryl was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters: Floy Sparks, Gerada Richardson, Dorothy Sparks, and Beulah Fisher; and two brothers: Delbert and Gerald.

Amanda Sensor

Amanda, 97, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility following a short illness.

Amanda Marie Sensor was born August 9, 1906 in rural Decorah, the daughter of Alphonso and Adena (Stoskopf) Thomann. She attended the Hamre School in rural Decorah.

On April 14, 1937 she married Richard Sensor at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah. They farmed south of Decorah and operated Sensor's Mobil Milling. She also cooked for years at her son's restaurants and at St. Benedict's Rectory.

She is survived by one daughter: Diane Homewood of Waterloo; and one son: Alan Sensor of Decorah.

Amanda was preceded in death by her husband Richard in 1971; her parents; and one brother: Raymond.

Wayne Erickson

Wayne, 61, died Sunday, March 28, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN after a brief illness.

Wayne Russell Erickson was born February 9, 1943 in Cresco, the son of Russell L. and Marie (Henry) Erickson. He attended rural school and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1961. After graduation, Wayne began farming with his father.

On April 12, 1969 he married Kay Buck at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. They farmed southwest of Cresco. In 1993 they moved onto the farm where his parents had been living.

Wayne enjoyed farming, watching football and basketball, especially the Packers and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He had a special fondness for Massey Ferguson tractors, "Fords", auto races, tractor pulls, playing cards, and his morning coffee.

He was a member of the Assumption Church and Farm Bureau. He received recognition from the 60 Bushel Club and the 200 Bushel Club of Pioneer Seeds.

He is survived by his wife Kay of Cresco; one son: Todd of Cresco; one daughter: Michelle Gaul of New Hampton; three grandchildren; one brother: Loel of Rochester, MN; and one sister: Shirley Stender of Rochester, MN.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents.

Helen Zakostelecky

Funeral services for Helen Zakostelecky were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 2 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Allen Hermeier officiating.

Interment was in Howard Center Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were: Brian Beatty, Jason Beatty, Dustin Baltz, Nathan Hageman, Joseph Hagemen, and Dean Zakostelecky. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Helen, 66, died Monday, March 29, 2004 at Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Helen Grace Zakostelecky was born April 14, 1937 in Cresco, the daughter of Vernon George and Rosa Ella Emma (Timmerman) Reuter. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. She attended the rural school near her home and later received her GED. She also attended NICC in Calmar to become a certified nurse aide. Prior to getting married she babysat for neighbors and cleaned house for Phyllis Kach.

On November 13, 1954 she married Francis Zakostelecky at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. They moved on a farm west of Cresco for about three years and then moved into Cresco.

Helen worked for HECO in Harmony, then she drove to Decorah to work for Wapsi Proudce. She was a waitress at Hawkeye Pizza and Steak House. She worked at the Cresco Care Center and later worked for Loving Touch, a home care provider. After encountering health problems 15 years ago, she quit working outside their home.

Helen was an excellent seamstress and good cook. She liked to work in her garden and loved animals.

She is survived by her husband Francis; four children: Melody Zakostelecky of Wahoo, NE, Marsha Hageman of Ft. Atkinson, Vernon of Cedar Rapids, and David of Cresco; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother: Robert of Waterloo; and four sisters: Ruby Wilson of Cedar Rapids, Ruth Lefernik of Riceville, Ida Zakostelecky of Lime Springs, and Karen Fritz of Waterloo.

Helen was preceded in death by two sons: Joseph Francis in infancy and Scott Francis; and her parents.

Rosella Galing

Funeral services for Rosella Galing of Alta Vista were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 3 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Monsignor John Hemann officiating.

Interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista. Pallbearers were: Robert Kolbet, Leon Grober, Dean Grober, Todd Grober, Michael Tilkes, and David Tilkes. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Rosella, 78, died Monday, March 29, 2004 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage of a pulmonary embolism.

Rosella A. Galing was born March 14, 1926 on the family farm near Alta Vista, the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Ruhoff) Grober. She was a 1944 graduate of St. Williams High School in Alta Vista.

On July 25, 1944 she married Henry Tilkes at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista. They farmed west of Alta Vista. Henry died on August 2, 1960. Rosella lived on the farm until she married Bernard Galing on August 18, 1969. They resided on his farm a few miles west of her farm. They lived on the farm until Bernard's death on February 16, 2002. Rosella moved to Alta Vista where she was residing.

She enjoyed farming, flower gardens, quilting and in her younger years she was an Amway Distributor.

She is survived by three sons: James Tilkes of Coarse Gold, CA, Paul Tilkes of Austin, MN, and Patrick Tilkes of Kerman, CA; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three brothers: Andrew of New Hampton, Joseph of Alta Vista, and Vincent of Seneca, IL.

Rosella was preceded in death by her husband Henry Tilkes; her husband Bernard Galing; one son: Leonard Tilkes; and one sister: Mary Kolbet.

Hazel Seavy

Funeral services for Hazel Seavy of Riceville were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 2 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Riceville with Rev. Gale Richards officiating.

Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Hazel, 83, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at the Colonial Manor of Elma.

Hazel Marie Seavy was born May 30, 1920 at Riceville, the daughter of Frank and Charlotte (Meinzer) Seavy. She attended local schools and graduated from Riceville High School. Hazel attended Luther College in Decorah and received her teaching degree. She taught in the Riceville School System from 1945 to 1950 when she moved to Decorah and taught grade school and children with special needs until her retirement.

She was an active member of the Riceville American Legion, Wa tan ye, Retired Teachers Association, Congregational Golden Circle, lifetime member of Beta Eta Teachers Sorority, and was a driving force behind the Avenue of Flags in Riceville.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; and five brothers: Lester, Floyd, Donald, Gaylord, and Gilbert.

Arthur Pecinovsky

Arthur, 93, died Saturday, March 27, 2004 at the Cresco Care Center where he has made his home since February of 2004.

Arthur Eugene Pecinovsky was born November 22, 1910 in Cresco, the son of Frank and Louisa (Svestka) Pecinovsky. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1929 and started working at Cresco Machine.

On April 23, 1935 he married Genevieve Wilson in St. Joseph's Church in Cresco. After his employment at Cresco Machine he took a position as a city carrier for the local post office until his enlistment in the war. On October 21, 1942 he enlisted in the U.S.Navy to serve his country. He was discharged in December of 1945. Upon his return home, he resumed his postal position until a rural position opened which he held for 35 years. He also managed the local country club.

Arthur enjoyed bowling and golf. He was a member of the Cresco Country Club, the V.F.W. and was twice commander of Post #4561.

He is survived by one daughter: Carol Foley of Cresco; one son: David of Crown Point, IN; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother: Donald J.; and two sisters: Elizabeth Durfey and Geraldine Pecinovsky, all of Cresco.

Arthur was preceded in death by his wife Genevieve on August 5, 2001; one son: Gary Lee; one grandson; one great-grandson; his parents; two brothers: Edward and Adolph; and one sister: Emma Simmons.

Marland Cheney

Graveside services for Marland Cheney of Lime Springs were held on Monday, April 5 at the Saetersdal Lutheran Church Cemetery with Linda Prestholt officiating.

Honorary pallbearers were: Mike Cheney, Jeff Cheney, Randy Mohs, David Mohs, Richard Mohs, Bruce Leverson, and Jerry Terbeest. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Marland, 70, died Saturday, April 3, 2004 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Marland K. Cheney was born April 10, 1933 in Howard County, the son of Gladys and Milton Cheney. He attended the Lime Springs School.

On August 26, 1953 he married Helen Terbeest. Marley served his country from 1953 to 1955. After returning to Lime Springs, he worked at various jobs. He ran a portable feed mill, drove school bus and worked for Hawkeye Stages of Decorah for 30 plus years.

He is survived by his wife Helen of Lime Springs; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Jean Ann Terbeester of rural Lime Springs, Betty Mohs of Harmony, MN, and Donna Leverson of Lime Springs.

Marland was preceded in death by one son: Rocky; his parents; and one brother: Roger.

Mark Balk

Funeral services for Mark Balk of Waucoma were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 10 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating.

Interment was in St. Rose Cemetery. Waucoma Funeral Chapel handled the arrangements.

Mark, 58, died of a sudden illness on Sunday, April 4, 2004 at his home.

Mark Balk was born August 2, 1945 at New Hampton, the son of Herman and Madonna (Finnegan) Balk. He graduated from Turkey Valley High School in 1963. He served in the United States Navy from 1964 to 1967. Mark graduated from Iowa State College at Ames in electronics and worked in Washington, D.C. for about one and one half years before returning home in 1970 to farm.

On September 13, 1975 he married Janice Wagner at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville.

Mark enjoyed golfing, auto racing, playing cards, board games, bowling, attending his children's sporting events, and farming.

He is survived by his wife Janice; two daughters: Tami Larch of San diego, CA and Brenda Balk of Waucoma; two sons: Darin and Bobby, both of Waucoma; four sisters: Madonna Baker of Glendale, WI, Marie Blong of St. Lucas, Delores Puffer of Lakewood, CO, and Judy Melcher of Lenexa, KS; and three brothers: James of Waucoma, Vern of Ankeny, and Charles of Montrose, CO.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister: Barbara.

Stella Larsen

Stella, 86, died Friday, April 9, 2004 at the Delano Health Care Center in Delano, MN.

Stella Henrietta Larsen was born December 26, 1917 in rural Winneshiek County, the daughter of Bennie J. and Salema M. (Pederson) Jacobson. Stella attended and graduated from Cresco High School in 1937.

In 1939 she married Leonard L. Larsen. She was an employee of Riceville Hospital, until she went to Minneapolis in 1961. She retired from St. Mary's Hospital in 1983 and moved to St. Michael-Albertville and made a home with her daughter and family.

She is survived by one daughter: Sharon Nelson; special son: Lonny Larsen; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four sisters: Wilda, Norma, Shirley, and Marlys.

Stella was preceded in death by her husband: Leonard; one son: David; her parents; and one brother: Burdette.

She is survived by one daughter: Sharon Nelson; special son: Lonny Larsen; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four sisters: Wilda Middlebrook of rural Cresco, Norma Nelson of Bloomington, MN, Shirley Timmerman of Maple Lake, MN, and Marlys Scheevel of rural Preston, MN.

Rita McCabe

Funeral services for Rita McCabe were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 7 at Notre Dame Parish, St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating.

Rita, 81, died Sunday, April 4, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Rita Lucille McCabe was born February 6, 1923 in Winneshiek County, the daughter of Albert E. and Adella (Scheidel) Hauber. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at St. Agnes Catholic Church at Plymouth Rock. She attended the rural school near her home and following her education, stayed at home to help with the farming.

On April 6, 1942 she married Robert McCabe in St. Agnes Church at Plymouth Rock. They lived their married lives on the farm and Rita moved into Cresco the year following Robert's death on April 28, 1985.

Rita loved the farm and considered farming her hobby. She loved the outdoors and animals. She also liked to garden, play cards, cooking, and going out to eat.

She was a member of St. Agnes Church, joining St. Joseph's Church when she moved to town. She was a member of the bank VIP Club.

She is survived by her children: Gary of Minneapolis, MN, Marlene Ferrie of Cresco, and Greg and Larry, both of Cresco; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother: George Hauber of Cresco; and five sisters: June Ryan and Marion Haskovec, both of Cresco, Rose Ryan of Cedar Falls, Betty Sexton of Marion, and Norma Smith of Huntington, W.VA.

Rita was preceded in death by her husband Robert; twin daughters in infancy; her parents; and one brother: Gerald.

Florian Combs

Bud, 76, died Monday, April 5, 2004 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Florian Vance Combs was born April 8, 1927 in Minneapolis, MN, the son of Alfred and Rose (Pilarski) Combs. After graduation from Hopkins High School in 1945, he entered the Navy, served in the Pacific Theatre, being discharged in 1946. After the service, he attended Hamlin University and the Minnesota School of Business. On September 8, 1951 he married Theresa A. Sidla at St. Jospeh's Church in Hopkins, MN. In 1947, Bud became a partner in Nelson Shoes of Hopkins, MN. From 1951 until 1955 he was a manufacturing representative for Peters Division, with International Show Company of St. Louis, MO. In 1955, he transferred to the Red Ball Division of US Rubber, of Mishawaka, IN, until 1969. In 1969, they purchased the B & H Shoe Co. of Cresco, and operated as Combs Shoes until their retirement in 1987.

Bud was a member of the Cresco Chamber of Commerce, served as its president, and was instrumental in purchasing the property that is now the home of Crestwood Elementary and Middle School. He introduced and became the Chairman of the first International Cresco Snow Fest. Bud was also a member of the American Legion and the National Association of Dorset Sheep Producers. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club and the Knights of Columbus.

Bud enjoyed fishing, hunting, and had a large garden.

He is survived by his wife Theresa; his children: Colleen Crow of Peoria, IL, Sharon Burman of Hampton, Jeffrey of Plano, TX, Thomas of Nashua, Michelle Reed of Clinton, and David of Aica, HI; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents.

James Womack

Funeral services for James "Jim" Womack were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 12 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville with Rev. Ray. E. Atwood officiating.

James, 89, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at the Mitchell County Regional Hospital in Osage, after suffering a heart attack in downtown Riceville.

James Maurice Womack was born May 31, 1914 in Howard County, near Elma, the son of Pearl and Mary Olive (Wilden) Womack. He attended the rural school in Howard County and graduated from Riceville High School. He worked on the farm following his education.

On February 15, 1938 he married Gertrude Gansen in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma. They farmed for a short period of time. They moved to Minnesota where Jim found a job working in a flax mill. They moved back to Riceville and Jim worked at Oliver Implement Co.

Jim was inducted into the Navy during WWII and served until December 1945. Following his discharge, he moved back onto the farm until 1951 when they moved into Riceville. He ran the Phillips 66 station in Riceville for four or five years and worked as a mechanic for International Harvester in Ricevile, Cresco, and Protivin. Prior to his retirement he worked for Mitchell County Conservation.

Jim liked to camp and fish.

He is survived by his children: Mary Elizabeth Wagner of Dysart, Shirley Jean Venz of St. James City, FL, and James A. of Bertram; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude on May 19, 2003; one granddaughter; his parents; three brothers: Donald, George, and Homer; and seven sisters: Lillian Marvin, Gladys Theis, Edna Slagle, Erma Elberts, Hazel Kapka, Opal Pollen, and Joyce Weatherly.

Pearl Seery

Pearl, 97, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at the New Hampton Care Center.

Pearl Seery was born January 10, 1907 in Lamont, the daughter of John and Anna (Schmock) Kash. She attended school in Lamont and graduated from St. Vincent's Academy in Dubuque. Pearl lived at home with her parents and played the piano for the silent movies.

On May 4, 1936 she married F. Ralph Seery at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lamont. She worked for the Rationing Board during WWII and then went to work for the former Sheakley-Kennedy Department Store in New Hampton from 1946-1956. She worked from 1956-1976 at the former Carney-Schnurr Insurance Agency in New Hampton.

Pearl loved flowers. She was a lifetime member of the Catholic Daughters of the America's, a volunteer at the Little Brown Church Museum in Nashua and a member of Holy Family Parish and Rosary Society.

Pearl was preceded in death by her husband Ralph on November 7, 1962; her parents; two brothers: Clarence and Irvin; and one sister: Maymie Houska.

Rex Willis

Funeral services for Rex Willis of Riceville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 17 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville with Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating.

Rex, 93, died Saturday, April 10, 2004 at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Rex James Willis was born June 23, 1910 in Riceville the son of Earl and Mabel (Martin) Willis. Following his graduation in 1928 from Riceville High School, Rex worked in a variety of roles (including as Riceville's assistant postmaster). He also attended Gates Business College in Waterloo for two years. In 1942, he began working at Riceville's First National Bank, but later that same year joined the U.S. Army, serving as a sergeant in the New Guinea and Philippine Campaigns. At the end of his World War II service, he returned to the First National Bank as bookkeeper and janitor. During these years, he completed his diploma at the School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin. He worked his way through the ranks at First National, ultimately serving as President and Chairman of the Board before retiring in 1997.

Rex was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Church and was involved in its Building Committee when the new church was built. He also served as director and treasurer for the Calvary Cemetery for over 50 years and was a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus.

He took an active role in the development of Lake Hendricks. He was also active in the design and building of the Riceville Rest Home, serving as director and Treasurer for over 25 years. He served as a board member on the Riceville Hospital and the Riceville Development Corporation. He was a member of the Riceville Community Club for over 50 years. Other service included serving as a member and Finance Officer of American Legion, Post #244, Treasurer of Avenue of Flags for Jenkins Township Cemetery, Riceville and Treasurer of the Wapsi-Great Western Line Trail.

He is survived by one sister: Florence Waltman of Canon City, CO.

Eleanor Thacher

Eleanor, 83, died Sunday, April 4, 2004 at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI.

Eleanor Lucille Thacher was born April 13, 1920 the daughter of Lee and Bertha (Prinsen) Berning. She finished eighth grade in the Crystal Springs rural schools. Throughout her schooling, Eleanor stayed home to help take care of the house and farm when her mother was sick, including helping her father shock grain, driving a team of four horses, threshing grain, driving cattle, and milking.

In 1940 she married Wylie Thacher.

Eleanor was a wonderful seamstress. She also baked pies, cakes, and other foods. "The Successful Farming" magazine came and interviewed and took pictures of many of her bakings and published them.

In the 1960s Eleanor started working at the Townhouse as a waitress.

She is survived by one son: Wynn; three grandchildren; and five great-granddaughters.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband Wylie; and one sister: LeNora Prinsen.

Alfred Moen

Memorial services for Alfred Moen of Ridgeway were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 17 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway with Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson officiating.

His body was donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City. Interment will be at a later date in Orleans Lutheran Cemetery in rural Ridgeway. Fjelstul Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Alfred, 88, died Thursday, April 15, 2004 at Oneota Riverview Care Facility following a long illness.

Alfred Orlando Moen was born March 26, 1916 in Decorah, the son of Torgie and Gustie (Basol) Moen. He was baptized April 30, 1916 and confirmed June 22, 1930 at Decorah Lutheran Church. Alfred graduated from Decorah High School in 1934.

On November 9, 1941 he married Ethel Lunningdal at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Alfred was a baker at the Dotseth Bakery in Decorah from the time he was 14 until he entered the Navy in 1942. While in the service he served as a baker as well. When he was discharged from the Navy he farmed in the northwest part of Winneshiek County. He enjoyed farming and developed a very good dairy herd. He went to Agriculture classes that were taught by the late Olaf Kjome of Spring Grove. After several years he took a second job as a baker in Harmony, MN and then in Cresco and later in Decorah. He sold the farm and became a janitor in the Cresco schools. Alfred and Ethel later moved off the farm into the Ridgeway Apartments. Ethel passed away in October of 1985. He moved to the Oneota Riverview Care Facility when he could no longer drive. That was his home for the past eight years.

Alfred loved music, especially classical and religious music. He was a history buff and was an avid sports fan.

He is survived by four children: Roberta Blekeberg of Decorah, Ronald of Caledonia, MN, Karen Tanner of Mississippi, and Ross of Cresco; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Alfred was preceded in death by his wife Ethel; one grandson; three brothers: Kenneth, Melvin, and Selmar; and three sisters: Clarissa Halloran, Gertrude Meier, and Helen Scott.

Martha Frana

Martha, 78, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at the LaCrescent Nursing Home in LaCrescent, MN after a short illness.

Martha Mary Frana was born August 10, 1925 on the farm near Conover, the daughter of Adolph and Otilla (Pecka) Frana. She attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School and country school near their farm. Martha cleaned homes for many people in the area and did volunteer work.

She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and the Legion of Mary.

Martha enjoyed reading, playing bingo, watching TV and listening to her brother's polka band.

She is survived by two sisters: Viola and Georgina Frana, both of Edina, MN; five brothers: Arthur of Spillville, Ermin of Calmar, Jerome of Ossian, Marcelline of Charles City, and Julius of Calmar.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; and four brothers: George, Leonard, Adolph, and Stanley.

Milton Papousek

Funeral services for Milton Papousek of Fredericksburg were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 19 at Holy Family Parish-St. Mary's Center in New Hampton with Rev. John Harpel officiating.

Milt's wife Geri and his three sons placed the pall. Interment was in Rose HillCemetery in Fredericksburg. Milton, 63, died Thursday, April 15, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton after a lengthy illness.

Milton Ray Papousek was born November 16, 1940 in Gregory, SD, the son of Richard and Dorothy (Watzel) Papousek. At an early age the family moved near Sumner where Milton attended rural country schools. He graduated in 1959 from Fredericksburg High School, where he was a member of the first football team. After graduation, he worked for Sam Aasen until enlisting in the United States Army. After returning in 1964 he started with the Mueller-Cahoy Company. Milt also was a member of the Reserves until 1969.

On February 6, 1965 he married Geraldine Weigel of New Hampton at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Hampton. They resided in Fredericksburg. Milt retired from Cahoy's in 1998 at which time he and Geri moved to the Papousek family farm, north of Fredericksburg.

He was a member of St. Frederick's Catholic Church and the Northeast Iowa Steel Guitar Players.

He is survived by his wife Geri; three sons: Dean of Earlham, Alan of Fredericksburg, and Troy of Fredericksburg; and seven grandchildren.

Milton was preceded in death by his parents.

William Riha

Funeral services and interment for William "Bill" Riha of Cedar Rapids were held on Thursday, April 16 at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids.

William, 67, died Monday, April 12, 2004 in University Hospitals in Iowa City after a sudden illness.

William C. Riha was born August 22, 1936 in Cresco and grew up in Protivin. He served in the U.S. Army for two years and moved to Cedar Rapids in 1963. He worked several years for both Hubbard Ice and Kelty Radiator Company.

He was a member of the VFW and St. Wenceslaus Parish.

He is survived by three sons: Dennis, Kenneth, and Richard, all of Cedar Rapids; one daughter: Linda Howanietz of Bristol, WI; one stepson: Dennis Starr; one stepdaughter: Debbie Starr of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

William was preceded in death by his first wife: Marlene DeWalle; second wife: Doris Starr; his parents: William Sr. and Regina Riha; one sister: Lucille Pazour; and one brother: Ernest.

Robert Andera

Funeral services for Robert Andera of Cheyenne, WY were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 19 at Holy Trinity in Cheyenne with Rev. Thomas Cronkelton officiating.

Robert, 71, died Thursday, April 15, 2004 at his home of cancer.

Robert Andera was born November 30, 1932 in Howard County, the son of Joseph and Mary (Markovetz) Andera. Robert served in the Army. Upon his return home he moved to Cheyenne in 1958 and started to work for the State Highway Dept. He retired 30 years later as Maintenance Shop Foreman.

In June of 1965 he married Marilyn (Kearney) Davis.

Robert was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Telephone Pioneers and the American Legion.

After retirement, he and Marilyn traveled extensively. His goal was to visit all 50 states; he only missed two.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn; one son: Kurt Davis of Reno, NV; two daughters: Becky Wilson of Cheyenne, WY and Barbara Smith of Rome, GA; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers: Joseph of Titisville, FL and Jerry of Manly; and one sister: Mary Barth of Decorah.

Robert was preceded in death by one son: Kim Davis; his parents; and two brothers: Jerome and Clarence.

Richard Wilson

Richard, 90, died Monday, April 19, 2004 at his home in Harmony.

Richard Howard Wilson was born May 28, 1913 in Des Moines, the son of Raymond and Louisa (Ullius) Wilson. He grew up on farms in Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota, and attended Harmony High School.

On September 26, 1936 he married Pauline Sikkink at her parents' home near Greenleafton. They farmed near Granger until moving to the Sikkink farm near Greenleafton in 1949. They resided there until 2000 when they moved to Harmony.

Richard enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, woodworking and traveling.

He was a member of the Greenleafton Reformed Church where he served as a deacon. He also served as Bristol Township clerk for many years. He was a past 4-H leader and a member of the school board for Prairie Queen, a rural district in Bristol Township.

He is survived by his wife Pauline; one son: Robert of Eagan, MN; four daughters: JoAnn Runkel of Harmony, Nancy Slykhuis of Perrysburg, OH, Sherrie Wilson of Omaha, NE,, and Jackie Sahl of Stewartville; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great- great-grandson; and one sister: Mary Lietz of Harmony.

Richard was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Janice Schaufenbuel

Janice, 60, died Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at her home in Tripoli from complications of pancreatic cancer.

Janice Marie Schaufenbuel was born December 5. 1943 at Mercy Hospital in Cresco, the daughter of Edwin and Mayme (Busta) Vrba. She was baptized on December 19, 1943 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin by Rev. Hradecky and confirmed on March 7, 1954 at the same parish. Jan received her elementary education in both Protivin and rural country schools, and graduated from Crestwood High School in 1961. Following her schooling, Jan began working as an insurance secretary in Decorah.

On April 29, 1967 she married William J. Schaufenbuel at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They made their home in rural Tripoli.

Janice was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church in Waverly. She enjoyed polka music and playing cards.

She is survived by her husband Bill of Tripoli; three children: Renee Thomas of West Des Moines, John of Tripoli, and Brian of Tripoli; one sister: Maxine Gleason of Gilbertville; and five grandchildren.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister: Anita Opat.

Margaret Boedeker

Margaret, 90, died Friday, April 23, 2004 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New Hampton, where she had moved to in 2001, of natural causes.

Margaret Boedeker was born August 15, 1913 in Baudle, SD, the daughter of Pastor Otto and Adeline (Giem) Keller.

On December 5, 1956 she married Ernst Boedeker in Rochester.

She is survived by one step son: Paul Boedeker of Fredericksburg; one step daughter: Louann Kleiss of Fredericksburg; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one brother: Gary Olson of Tuscon, AZ; and two half brothers: Charles Olson of Redding, CA and Ted Keller of Hemet, CA.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband on November 9, 1981; a step son: Roland Boedeker; one step daughter: Marion Boedeker; her parents; one brother: Al Olson; a half sister: Althea Keller Mebius; and two half brothers: Oscar and Norman Olson.

Leeman Hudson

Forty-five relatives and friends of Leeman Hudson (May 16, 1917 - January 27, 2004) gathered on Saturday, April 24, 2004, for his graveside service, interment at New Oregon Cemetery, and a special tribute to his life.

Pastor Gary Lee of First Lutheran Church performed the graveside memorial service which included a special musical tribute. An earlier funeral service was celebrated on January 31 at First Lutheran Church.

Paul Morgan of American Legion Post #135 presented Leeman's family with a commendation from the Services and a graveside flag. The Certificate of Appreciation, which was composed by Richard Zak, stated that Leeman, as an individual, was "always interested in veterans, support of his country and the flag, and, as a civilian, he was a 'true patriot.'"

The setting for Leeman's "Special Tribute and Celebration of Life" was the party room of Sandy's Country Cafe, where friends and family gathered for lunch and to pay tribute to Leeman's memory. Memorabilia and mementos from Leeman's long and full life were displayed; guests presented the family with written special memories.

Hazel Hughes

Funeral services for Hazel Hughes of Cresco were held on Wednesday, April 21 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco with Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiating.

Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Hazel, 90, died Saturday, April 17, 2004 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County.

Hazel Elizabeth Hughes was born December 19, 1913 in Albion Township, Howard County, the daughter of Arthur and Elisa Goetsch. She attended school in Albion Township. She was baptized in the Zion E.U.B. Church at an early age and was presently a member of the Cresco United Methodist Church.

On December 28, 1955 she married Robert Hughes.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Robert on December 28, 1990; her parents; two sisters: Alice Diem and Myrtle Nise; and her twin brother: Henry.

Elmer Peter

Funeral services for Elmer Peter of Cresco were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 20 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Allen Hermeier officiating.

Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Elmer, 85, died Sunday, April 18, 2004 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Elmer W. Peter was born December 19, 1918 in Winneshiek County, the son of Alfred and Alice (Elta) Peter. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. On Janurary 8, 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged on November 10, 1945.

On January 24, 1947 he married Marian Sommer. They farmed in Orleans Township in Winneshiek County, before moving to Cresco in February of 1992, where Elmer enjoyed his garden and early morning walks. Marian passed away on April 8, 1993. In November of 2002 Elmer moved to the Cresco Care Center.

He is survived by three sons: Duane of Plano, TX, Alan of Cresco, and Dale of Decorah; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Roger and Arnold.

Elmer was preceded in death by his wife Marian; his parents; and four sisters: Helen Sandvik, Lucille Midthus, Marjory Askelson, and Ione Millard.

Kent Lueschow

Funeral services for Kent Lueschow of Gillette, WY were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 22 at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Gillette, WY with Pastors Chad and Sonja Brucklacher officiating.

Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco at a later date. Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Kent, 44, died Saturday, April 17, 2004 at the Campbell County Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Kent Gerald Lueschow was born March 24, 1960 in Marshfield, WI the son of Kenneth A. and Shirley (Bauman) Lueschow. He was baptized April 3, 1960 at St. Johns American Lutheran Church. At age four, Kent and his family moved from Edgar, WI to Cresco. He was confirmed in May of 1975 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. During high school, Kent worked for Dick Franks Dairy Farm. In May of 1978, he graduated from Crestwood High School in Cresco. After graduation, he drove semi-truck for the family trucking business.

On September 4, 1982 he married Roxanne Sacquitne at Glenwood Lutheran Church in Decorah. He moved to Gillette in April of 1982, and worked for Elmore Livestock until April of 1998. From April of 1998 until present, Kent was employed at Melgaard Construction as a mechanic.

Kent had a passion for racing sprint cars, which he shared with his children in Rapid City, SD and Gillette. He liked to watch Nascar races and the Green Bay Packers. In the past, he participated in a steel tip dart league.

He was a member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Gillette.

He is survived by his wife Roxanne; three children: Serenity Lueschow of Cheyenne, WY, Trinity Lueschow stationed in Korea, and Logan of Gillette; his mother of Cresco; his siblings: Kenneth, Jr., of Cresco, Kay Praska of Gillette, Kelvin of Cresco, and Karla Baulmer of Waucoma.

Kent was preceded in death by his father; and his grandparents.

Rosalia Ptacek

Funeral services for Rosalia Ptacek of Elma will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, April 28 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Monsignor John Hemann and Rev. John Ptacek concelebrating the mass.

Her children will place the pall. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Elma. Pallbearers are: Robert Ptacek, Daniel Ptacek, Jeffrey Ptacek, David Deutsch, Matthew Deutsch, and Monty Meyer. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Rosalia, 81, died Sunday, April 25, 2004 at Colonial Manor in Elma of natural causes.

Rosalia Esther Ptacek was born March 5, 1923 on a farm east of Elma, the daughter of Frank and Veronica (Kanies) Meier.

On June 2, 1942 she married Joseph Ptacek at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. They farmed near Elma.

Rosalia was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and rosary society.

She loved gardening, fishing, crocheting, and quilt making.

She is survived by one son: Paul of Elma; two daughters: Diane Ptacek of Little Canada, MN and Linda Deutsch of Waverly; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four brothers: Arnold of Elma, Walter of Elma, Harold of Elma and Francis of Elma; and two sisters: Agnes Hidding of Lourdes and Angeline Helmerick of Colorado.

Rosalia was preceded in death by her husband Joseph on March 12, 2004; two sons: Michael and James; her parents; and one brother: Jerome.
