Violet Styve

Funeral services for Violet Styve of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 25 at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. Marion Pruitt-Miller officiating.

Interment was in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. Pallbearers were: Cory Stotts, Mark Styve, Brad Styve, Jim Lensch, Kent Lensch, and Kevin Lensch. Honorary pallbearers were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Schluter-Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Violet, 92, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah after a long illness.

Violet Emily Catherine Styve was born May 11, 1912 near Decorah, the daughter of Henry and Clara (Stoskopf) Severson. She was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Locust and confirmed at the Decorah Lutheran Church. She attended Pleasant Township #5 country school.

On September 20, 1933 she married Lester Styve at the Decorah Lutheran Parsonage. She worked at the Cliff House and Wapsie Produce for several years.

She enjoyed doing embroidery, crocheting, gardening and tending to her flowers.

She was a member of TOPS for 25 years. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Decorah.

She is survived by two daughters: Roselyn Lensch of Decorah and Charlene Brainard of Waukon; one son: Mark of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister: Edna Fisher of Decorah.

Violet was preceded in death by her husband Lester on March 29, 1995; her parents; three brothers: Sylvan, Leonard, and Everett; and three sisters: Lillian Stoskopf, Clarissa Danielson, and Evelyn in infancy.


Charles Leeper

Funeral services for Charles "Charlie" Leeper of Watertown, formerly of the Wentworth, SD community were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 29 at the Furness Funeral Home Chapel in Clark, SD with Pastor Donna Nickels officiating.

Interment was in Kendallville Cemetery in Kendallville.

Charles, 85, died Thursday, June 24, 2004 in the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Charles Reed Leeper was born August 24, 1918 near Pleasanton, the son of William Robert and Una Vivian (Argo) Leeper. He lived near Harvey as a child and teenager.

On July 9, 1938 he married Irene Bloomgren. They lived at Cresco where they farmed and for 28 years, Charlie drove school bus. In the early 1990s they moved to Wentworth, SD. Irene died on January 2, 1993. After her death he continued living in Wentworth working for Green Auction Service. In 1999 he moved to Watertown and has been living at Meadow Lake Acres.

His hobbies included traveling, fishing, and whittling.

He is survived by three grandchildren; many great and great-great-grandchildren; and three brothers: James, Paul, and Richard.

Charlie was preceded in death by his wife, Irene; one son in infancy; one daughter: Darlene Green; his parents; and three brothers: Walter, Roscoe, and Robert.


Marian Huffey

Marian Huffey, 84, died Thursday, June 17, 2004 after a lingering illness.

Marian Elizabeth Huffey was born December 9, 1919 in Ostrander, MN the daughter of James and Pearl (Lathrop) Lepa. She attended country school in rural Minnesota. The family moved to rural Iowa where she attended Our Lady of Lourdes her freshman year and then attended Assumption High School in Cresco graduating in 1938. She attended North Central Bible College in Minneapolis, MN, 1938-1940.

On March 31, 1941 she married Vernon L. Huffey in Decorah. She resided in Washington state and California while her husband served in the U.S. Army Chaplaincy during World War II. Marian served as queen of the parsonage during pastorates in Conrad and Storm Lake, Assemblies of God churches for 36 years.

She was a gifted instructor of children with whom she worked and taught her entire life. She was a designer of crafts, seamstress, and enjoyed a ministry of music.

She is survived by husband Vernon of Storm Lake; two children: LaDon Kallmer of Omaha, NE and Paul of Linn Grove; three grandchildren; and one brother: Roger Lepa of Lime Springs.

Marian was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and three brothers.


Louis Hageman

Funeral services for Louis Hageman of Fort Atkinson were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 26 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating.

Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in Spillville. Honorary pallbearers were: his goddaughters: Marilyn Holthaus, Doris Severson and Renee Bohr. Pallbearers were: Larry Brincks, Jim Hageman, Jeff Hageman, Gerald Praska, Dean Hageman, Lloyd Hageman, Lynn Hageman, and Jeffrey Schlatter. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Louis, 75, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at his home following a lengthy illness.

Louis Joseph Hageman was born March 12, 1929 on the family farm near Festina, the son of August and Theresa (Schmitt) Hageman. He attended St. Aloysius School in Calmar. He was a member of the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and the Holy Name.

On June 23, 1952 he married Dolores Barta at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They farmed in the Fort Atkinson area for 52 years.

He enjoyed farming, fishing, and polka music.

He is survived by his wife Dolores; four children: Darrell and Barbara Praska, both of Cresco; Gary of Decorah and Diane Christensen of Grinnell; four grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; 10 step great-grandchildren; five brothers: Francis of Calmar, Eugene of Decorah, Delbert of Decorah, August, Jr. of Ossian, and Robert of Decorah; and two sisters: Marie Brincks of Ossian and Helen Dietzenbach of St. Lucas.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers: Cornelius and Leonard.


Roy Kurdelmeier

Funeral services for Roy Kurdelmeier of Harmony, MN were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 28 at Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony.

Interment was in Greenfield Lutheran Cemetery in Harmony. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Roy, 96, died Thursday, June 24, 2004 at the Harmony Health Care in Harmony, MN.

Roy John Kurdelmeier was born February 11, 1908 in Monona, the son of Louis and Alvina (Wendt) Kurdelmeier.

On October 30, 1929 he married Martha Peter of Cresco. She passed away on May 11, 1950. In December of 1951 he married Mary Knick of Harmony.

Louis was a beef farmer for many years, after his move to Harmony, he worked 17 years as an electrician for Morem's Electric.

He is survived by his wife Mary of Harmony; one daughter: Eileen Mensink of Preston, MN; five grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.


Gordian Lensing

Funeral services for Gordian Lensing of Fort Atkinson were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 28 at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson with Rev. John Moser officiating.

Interment was in St. John's Catholic Church Cemetery. Schluter - Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Gordian, 81, died Friday, June 25, 2004 at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah following a long illness.

He is survived by five sons: Lyle of Elma, Loren of Bellville, IL, Leallan of Calmar, Earl and Neil of Fort Atkinson; one daughter: Amy Kramme of Spillville; three brothers: Roman of Calmar, Bruno of Cedar Rapids, and Stephen of Calmar; and three sisters: Bea Timp of Calmar, Mary Mulligan of Humbolt, and Verda Mikota of Little Turkey.

Alice Eiffler

Memorial services for Alice Eiffler were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 3 at the Evans Memorial Home Chapel in Cresco with Rev. Tim sir officiating.

Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Alice, 50, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Alice Mae Eiffler was born August 12, 1953 at Lime Springs, the daughter of Melvin and Lenora (Sanborn) Eiffler. Due to her mother's illness and inability to care for Alice and her sister and brother, the children were later placed in foster care in Johnson County. Alice was baptized on April 4, 1982.

Upon reaching adulthood, Alice returned to Howard County. She lived for a time at Howard Residential Care Facility before moving to Converse House, operated in Cresco by Opportunity Homes. She worked at Spectrum Industries.

When Alice's health declined to the point where she needed closer medical attention, she moved to Evans Memorial Home in August of 1998, continuing to work at Spectrum as long as her health allowed. At Evans Home she enjoyed the companionship of staff and residents, especially when her brother, Gary came to live there. Together they liked watching the beautiful birds in the aviary and watching television.

Alice suffered a cardiac arrest on Tuesday, June 24 and was transported to Howard County Hospital and then to St. Mary's.

She is survived by her brother Gary at the Evans Memorial Home.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister: Joyce Marie Eiffler.


John Siesseger

Funeral services for John Siesseger of Green Valley, AZ, were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 25 at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Independence.

John J. Siesseger was born June 9, 1921, the son of John and Lula Siesseger of Clear Lake. He graduated from Coe College in March of 1943, where he had four years of ROTC, went to officers school in Fort Knox, KY, and received his commission in July 1943.

In October 1943, he married Mary Miles. In 1944 he was sent to the European Theater of war, where he was a tank commander in the battle of the Bulge.

Upon returning, they made their life in McIntire where he coached and taught for four years. He went on to receive his Master's degree from the University of Iowa and Chicago University. In 1951 John took employment with the Iowa Farm Bureau as a single county fieldman. In 1960, he became a regional manager for IFB with five counties. He retired in 1983 and continued to live in Independence. They moved to Green Valley in 1989.

John was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, where he was a eucharistic minister, lector, and a Stephen Minister.

He is survived by his wife Mary; and one daughter: Jane Kosterlitzky.

John was preceded in death by an infant son; and his parents.


Lester Rouchka

Funeral services for Lester Rouchka of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 3 at Holy Family Parish, St. Mary's Center in New Hampton with Msgr. Carl Schmitt officiating.

Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in New Hampton. The pall was placed by his wife and five children. Pallbearers were: Tom Rouchka, John Benson, Glen Benson, Ed Shekleton, Jim Shekleton, and Bill Shekleton. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Homes handled the arrangements.

Lester, 80, died Monday, June 28, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of natural causes.

Lester J. Rouchka was born September 7, 1923 in Lourdes, the son of Jospeh and Christina (Sazma) Rouchka. He attended school at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School. After receiving his education, heworked on the Rouchka family farm.

On November 15, 1949 he married Mary Shekleton at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Hampton. They made their home Northwest of Lourdes. While the children were growing up, Lester farmed the Rouchka farm. He later went to work at SuperSweet in New Hampton and later at Sara Lee where he worked 18 years, retiring in 1991.

Lester was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting. His other joy was following the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs seasons.

He is survived by his wife Mary; three daughters: Jean McKnight of Chico, CA, Mary Kay Thomas of Portland, OR, and Julie Rouchka of Waverly; two sons: John of Stewartville, MN and James of Mason City; and two grandchildren.

Lester was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Joseph and Chester; one sister: Mary Benson; and two step-brothers: Albert and Raymond Myer.


Lucille Hagemann

Funeral services for Lucille Hagemann were held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco with Rev. Henry Charipar officiating.

Interment was in St. John's Cemetery in Fort Atkinson. Pallbearers were: Francis Monthy, Gary Monthy, David Monty, Jerry Krivacek, Jerry Ferrie, Paul Bina, and Francis Monthy, Jr.

Lucille, 78, died Thursday, July 1, 2004 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Lucille Mary Hagemann was born November 1, 1925 in Cresco, the daughter of Frank Bernard and Anna Mary (Herold) Leferink. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church and attended school at St. Joseph's School and Assumption High School for one year. Following her education she helped out at home and also for other people.

On November 26, 1945 she was married to Virgil Hagemann at St. Joseph's Church in Cresco by Rev. Anthony C. Woerdehoff. They lived at Ft. Atkinson. Lucille lived in Ft. Atkinson until 2002 when she moved to Cresco to be closer to family.

She enjoyed gardening, embroidering, crocheting, crossword puzzles, playing cards, and making trips to the boat.

She was a former member of St. John Nepomucene Church and belonged to a Circle of the Altar and Rosary Society.

She is survived by her children: Kenneth of Yuma, AZ and Mary Jane Ostert of Cresco; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister: Rita Monthy of Cresco; and two brothers: William of Albuquerque, NM and Leonard of Riceville.

Lucille was preceded in death by her husband Virgil in May of 1988; her parents; and two brothers: Francis and Felix.


Margaret Hovorka

Funeral services for Margaret Hovorka were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 5 at the Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating.

The family placed the pall. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery in Schley. Pallbearers were: Eugene, Tony, Allen, Jeff and Bruce Frana, and Vickie Demro and Karla Koudelka. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Margaret, 88, died Thursday, July 1, 2004 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Margaret Hovorka was born September 23, 1915 in Paris Township, Howard County, the daughter of Joseph and Antonia (Benedict) Tlusty. She was baptized and confirmed in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at Lourdes, where she attended the rural school near her home.

On November 12, 1935 she married Edward A. Koudelka at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Lourdes. She joined the Holy Cross Catholic Church where she was a member until its closing. She belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society.

On February 20, 1971 she married Edward Hovorka at Holy Cross Church in Schley.

She liked to garden, raise flowers, and was an excellent cook.

She is survived by one daughter: Wilma Frana of Calmar; one step son: Edward Hovorka; one step daughter: Willomene Anderson of Minneapolis, MN; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Margaret was preceded in death by both husbands: Edward Koudelka on October 12, 1961 and Edward Hovorka on November 26, 1994; one son: William; three grandchilddren; her parents; six brothers: Frank, Joseph, Edward, Henry, Jim, and John; and three sisters Elizabeth Wagner, Mary Bugenhagen, and Josephine Koshatka.


John Tlusty

Funeral services for John Tlusty of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 2 at the Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center with Henry W. Charipar officiating.

The family placed the pall. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were members of the American Legion: Dick Zak, Bob Moudry, Don Scharnweber, Bill Ferrie, Allan Novak, and Dale Arnold. Honorary pallbearers were: Tim Howland, Don and Ron Tlusty, Harvey Koshatka, Don Vrba, Daryl Engelhart, Joe Sobolik, Anita Schissel, and Shirley Tupy. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

John, 85, died Monday, June 28, 2004 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco where he has lived for almost a year.

John Tlusty was born March 6, 1919 in Howard County near Lourdes, the son of of Joseph and Antonia (Benedict) Tlusty. He attended rural school near his home and came into Cresco to graduate from Cresco High School. Following his education he started working in a grocery store.

On October 16, 1941 he married Marcella Moudry at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They made their home in Cresco. John was inducted into the United States Army on January 8, 1942 at Ft. Des Moines. He served in the Aviation Signal Corps in the European Theatre from December 1943 until January 1946. He was discharged on January 9, 1946 at Camp Grant, IL.

After John returned from the service, he returned to working at the grocery store. He worked for various stores in Cresco and eventually started working for the Postal Service. He worked for the Cresco Post Office for 27 years before he retired.

John loved music and could play any instrument. He played with various bands, played on the radio, played for many dances and activities. Even after he retired he enjoyed playing as a one man band. He donated his time to go to the rest homes and entertain the elderly.

He enjoyed working in the yard, mowed lawns, trimmed shrubbery, had a flower garden and made wooden yard ornaments. He belonged to Notre Dame Parish, the Cresco Council 1571 and the Davis Assembly of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and the V.F.W. John held many offices in these organizations.

He is survived by his wife Marcella; one daughter: Betty Ryan of Waukon; two grandchildren; and one sister: Margaret Hovorka of Cresco.

John was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Joseph, Frank, Edward, Henry, and Jim; and three sisters: Elizabeth Wagner, Mary Bugenhagen, and Josephine Koshatka.

Philip Bergan

Funeral services for Philip "Phil" Bergan were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 9 at Orleans Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway with Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson officiating.

Interment was in the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. Pallbearers were: Jeff Ayres, Joshua Bergan, Lynn Bolson, David McIntyre, Bradley Bergan, Ryan Bergan, Max Lamb, and Robert McIntyre. Fjelstul Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Phil, 57, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at his home in Cresco.

Philip Alan Bergan was born October 18, 1946 at the hospital in Decorah, the son of Orvin A. and Doris M. (Yarwood) Bergan. He was christened on November 2, 1946 by Rev. Sundby at Decorah Lutheran Church. Phil was confirmed in his faith at Decorah Lutheran Church in October 1962. He grew up in Decorah and graduated from Decorah high School in 1964.

In November 1964 he married Cheryl L. Bolson at Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah. They were later divorced. He married Judy M. McIntyre on May 22, 1976 in Fountain, MN.

Phil worked for a time at Luther College in the food service department and later worked as a paving inspector for Fred Carlson, Co., both in Decorah. Most recently, he was a truck driver for Alum-Line Industries in Cresco. He also worked as a part-time bus driver for the Howard-Winneshiek School District. He retired due to health issues in October 2002.

Phil was a member of Orleans Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway where he served as a Council member and as Congregational Treasurer.

Phil enjoyed bowling, fishing and traveling to Las Vegas with Judy. He liked to work on the computer, playing cards, and enjoyed collecting ash trays.

He is survived by his wife Judy of Cresco; his children: Christopher of Iowa City, Jennifer Lamb of Waterloo, Michael of Cresco, Jessica of Cresco, and Scott of Cresco; five grandchildren; and one sister: Janice Danielson of Cedar Rapids.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Robert.


Gaylord Kellow

Word has been received that Gaylord Kellow passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2004.

His father was Lynn Kellow, who had a grocery store in Cresco during the late 1800's and early 1900's.

The Kellow House Museum was Lynn Kellow's family home.

Gaylord worked in the store until he was through high school.

Gaylord and his family visited in Cresco in July 2000.


John M. Carrington

John M. Carrington of Cresco, formerly of Golden Valley, MN died in his home on July 3, 2004.

Private interment will be held in Millersburg, KY.

John M. Carrington was born September 6, 1933 in Millersburg, KY. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he was hired by IBM. In 1966, he and his family were relocated to Minneapolis. John was an Eagle Scout and served as a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America throughout his adult life. John and his wife retired to Cresco in 1999.

He is survived by his wife Jeanne; his children: Jane Carrington of Phoenix, AZ, John M. Carrington, Jr. of Knoxville, TN, and Susan Balk of Cresco; two grandchildren; and one sister: Elizabeth Crapster of Louisville, KY.


Ada Johnson

Funeral services for Ada Johnson of Harmony, MN will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 15 at Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony.

Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Interment will be in the Greenfield Lutheran Cemetery in Harmony.

Ada, 84, died Monday, July 12, 2004 at the Harmony Health Care Center, where she had been a resident for a short time.

Ada Leona Johnson was born October 30, 1919 in Henrytown, MN where she was baptized, confirmed, and attended school thru the eighth grade.

On September 20, 1941 she married Adolph Anderson; from this union they had one daughter, Joan. They were later divorced. On January 15, 1954 she married George Johnson and they had one son Chris.

Ada worked at various restaurant jobs in Harmony and at Control Data in Spring Grove, and later was a housewife.

She is survived by one daughter: Joan Sherman of Irvine, CA; one son: Chris of Harmony; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ada was preceded in death by her husband George; her parents; three brothers; and one sister.

Charles Martin, Jr.

Funeral services for Charles Martin, Jr. of Salem, AZ were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 10 at Concord Baptist Church of Salem, AZ with Rev. Bud Passmore and Raymond Jackson officiating.

Interment was in Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Fredericks Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Charles, Jr., 33, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at the Medical Center Hospital in Columbus, GA.

Charles Delmar Martin, Jr. was born October 1, 1970 in Phoenix City, AZ, the son of Charles and Gail (Allen) Martin. After graduating from Smith Station High School in 1988, he won a scholarship to Opelika Tech and graduated in automobile mechanics. He was proud of his Automotive Service Excellence Certification and was presented the Outstanding Employee of the Year award for people with disabilities by the Governor of Alabama on October 26, 1995.

On September 28, 1994 he married Rebecca Huhe of Cresco. They made their home in the Opelika, AL area where he worked as an auto mechanic.

He enjoyed racing cars, hunting, fishing, and movies.

He is survived by his wife Becky; one son: Charles Ryan; one daughter: Leah, all of Salem, AL; his mother: Gail; one sister: Sandra Reddish, all of Opelika, AL; one brother: Johnny of Valley, AZ; and maternal grandmother: Mary Lee Allen of Opelika.

Charles was preceded in death by his father.


Gerald Stika

Funeral services for Gerald Stika of Catoosa, OK were held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 1 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Tulsa, OK.

Interment was in Floral Haven Memorial Gardens.

Gerald, 55, died Saturday, June 26, 2004 in Tulsa, OK after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Gerald Robert Stika was born July 18, 1948 at the Cresco Hospital, the son of Robert and Dorothy (Hruska) Stika. He attended Holy Trinity Catholic School in Protivin and graduated from Crestwood High School in 1966. He enlisted in the Army in 1968 and was honorably discharged as Spec 5 in 1970 serving overseas in Germany.

On May 1, 1971 he married Mary Jane Kovarik at St. Joseph's Church in Cresco. They farmed for 16 years in the Protivin and Ridgeway area before moving to Oklahoma in December 1986. In 1988 he became a mechanic for American Airlines where he was an employee for 16 years.

Gerald was a member of American Legion Post 605 in Protivin for 34 years, a Catholic Workmen members, and financial secretary of the Knights of Columbus in Tulsa from 1990-2004 Council #2613 and 9668.

Gerald's hobbies included woodworking, gardening, and yardwork.

He is survived by his wife Mary; his children: Joseph of Carterville, GA, Gregory of Sapulpa, OK, John of Catoosa, OK, Lori Borcheis of Glenpool, OK, and Lisa and Gary at home; five grandchildren; his mother: Dorothy Stika of Protivin; four brothers: Michael of Protivin, Dale of Buckeye, AZ, Bob and Ron of Cresco; and four sisters: Mary Cheville of Ames, Helen Wilson of Lebanon, MO, Shirley Nelson of Ames, and Geralyn Smith of Waukon.

Gerald was preceded in death by his father: Robert Stika, Sr.; and one sister: Denise.


Beverly Ferch

Funeral services for Beverly Ferch of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 17 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton with Pastor Kevin Frey and Pastor Alan Schulz officiating.

Interment was in New Hampton City Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Brian Sinnwell, Zachary Sinnwell, Jeremy Maklenburg, Jason Maklenburg, Gene Thorne, Jaime DeSloover, Tim Brinks, Rich Greenlee, and Randy Soldwisch. Beverly, 68, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004 as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident.

Beverly A. Ferch was born May 5, 1936 on the Bemis family farm near Alpha, the daughter of Charles and Irene (West) Bemis. She attended school in Lawler and graduated from Lawler High School in 1956. As a young girl, Beverly helped on the family farm and cleaned homes for families in and around Lawler.

On October 18, 1959 she married Russell Ferch at the United Methodist Church in New Hampton. They lived in New Hampton. Beverly worked at the former Crystal Grill and the former Fairview Nursing Home, both in New Hampton.

On March 27, 2003 Russell died and she continued to live in their home on Pleasant Hill.

She was a puzzle enthusiast. She enjoyed camping.

She is survived by one daughter: Karen Sinnwell of Nashua; one son: Ron of Cresco; five grandchildren; and one sister: Florence DeSloover of Waucoma.

Beverly was preceded in death by her husband Russell; her parents; two brothers: LaVerne and Donald; and two sisters: Evelyn Bemis and a sister in infancy.


Dorothy Fencl

Funeral services for Dorothy Fencl of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 16 at the Notre Dame Parish - Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. James L. Secora officiating.

Inurnment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Dorothy, 82, died Monday, July 12, 2004 at the Cresco Care Center after an extended illness.

Dorothy Fencl was born January 6, 1922, the daughter of Elmer and Eva (Jacobsen) River. Her father died when she was two months old; she was then given to her father's sister and husband, Florence and Ward Sovereign, where she lived and grew to womanhood. Dorothy attended rural schools graduating from Cresco Public High School in 1939. She attended business college in Minneapolis, MN.

In 1941 she married Charles McCallister in Pismo Beach, CA. They eventually moved to Washington state. Dorothy retired from the Douglas County Public Utility District in 1982. Charles died in 1969. In 1983 she married Richard Fencl and returned to Cresco to live. She was a member of Notre Dame Parish - St. Joseph's Worship Center.

She is survived by two daughters: Barbara Boehl of Douglas, AK, and Janet McCallister Smith of Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina; two sons: Duane of Paso Robles, CA and Daryl of Highland Ranch, CO; four step children: Janice Pesek of Cresco, Virginia Dunt of Rochester, MN, Betty Koons of Hazel Green, WI, and James Fencl of Rochester, MN; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 14 step grandchildren; 31 step great-grandchildren; eight step great-great-grandchildren; and one sister: Muriel Perry of San Antonio, TX.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Richard Fencl who died in 2003; her first husband, Charles McCallister who died in 1969; one brother: William River; and by her extended family: Florence and Ward Sovereign, Claude Sovereign, Gerald Sovereign, Clark Sovereign, Gladys Wilson, and Doris O'Donnell.


Earl Riehle

Funeral services for Earl Riehle of Spillville were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 19 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Donald Hawes officiating.

Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in Spillville. Honorary pallbearers were: American Legion Clarence Bily Post #467 of Spillville. Earl, 88, died Friday, July 16 at his home following a long illness.

Earl Edward Riehle was born March 25, 1916 on the family farm near Spillville, the son of George and Mathilda (Ptachek) Riehle. Earl attended country school and St. Wenceslaus Catholic School. Earl worked for James Kuhn and Orlando Sime as a hired man before he entered the US Army from 1941 to 1946 in the South Pacific. When he returned home he worked for Haug Stores in Spillvile.

On January 23, 1952 he married Helen Haskovec at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. He then worked as the custodian at St. Wenceslaus Church and School for 25 years. He retired and then worked part-time for Riverside Park in Spillville and the Fort Atkinson Nursery.

He enjoyed traveling dancing, and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife Helen of Spillville; and one brother: Raymond of Spillville.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister: Marcella Still.


Florence Moudry

Funeral services for Florence Moudry of Spillville, formerly of St. Lucas were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 17 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Donald Hawes officiating.

Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in Spillville. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Florence, 90, died Monday, June 28, 2004 at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian following a long illness.

Florence Mary Moudry was born June 27, 1914 in Winneshiek County, near Spillville, the daughter of Jacob and Mary (Soukup) Schmitt. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. She received her education in the Spillville public and the St. Wenceslaus Catholic schools.

On November 13, 1944 she married Adolph Moudry at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. They lived in St. Lucas. They moved to Spillville to be closer to family. The last few years Florence has lived at the Ossian Senior Hospice.

She was a member of St. Luke's Parish in St. Lucas and was a member of their Rosary Society. Later she was a member of St. Wenceslaus in Spillville.

Florence loved to garden, bake and sew. She was a wonderful seamstress.

She is survived by three sisters: Mary Stine, Helen Timp, and Doris Thompson, all of Spillville; and one brother: Robert of Spillville.

Florence was preceded in death by her husband Adolph on February 11, 1994; her parents; and two brothers: Edward and Edmund.


Cora Dagit

Funeral services for Cora Faye Dagit of rural Cresco will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, July 21 at the Cresco Community Chapel in Cresco.

Cora, 72, died Monday, July 19, 2004 at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI.


Edna Adams

Funeral services for Edna Adams of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 15 at Holy Family Parish - St. Joseph Center in New Hampton with Monsignor Carl Schmitt officiating.

The pall was placed by her husband and five children. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery. Edna, 63, died Monday, July 12, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton after a lengthy illness.

Edna Mae Adams was born August 5, 1940 in New Hampton, the daughter of Everett and Mary (McFarland) Babcock. She attended St. Joseph Grade School and was a 1958 graduate of the New Hampton High School.

On August 9, 1958 she married Steve Adams of North Washington at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Hampton. They owned and operated two businesses in North Washington for 10 years, the Adams Grocery Store and the local tavern. They then moved to New Hampton where Edna was the Canteen Manager at Sara Lee for 26 years. Following Sara Lee, Edna worked at the New Hampton Care Center until 1999, when ill health forced her to retire.

Edna was a collector of guardian angels. She loved playing Bingo, experimenting with her computer, gambling and playing cards.

She is survived by her husband Steve; four daughters: Roxanne Gabranski of Hudson, WI, Mary Adams of New Hampton, Sue Matthews of Nashua, and Michelle White of Alta Vista; one son: Bob of Fredericksburg; 13 grandchildren; five step grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two step great-grandchildren; two brothers: Jim of Pueblo, CO and Tom of Frederika.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents.


Marlene Dore

Funeral services for Marlene Dore of East Gull Lake, MN and Old Cypress, Naples, FL, and former resident of Bloomington were held at 12:00 noon on Monday, July 19 at Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church in Prior Lake and at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 20 at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa.

Marlene, 60, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Marlene M. Dore was born July 8, 1944 in Cresco, the daughter of Raymond and Marjorie (Blaser) Bauer.

She is survived by her husband Richard; sons: Steve of Bloomington and Trent of Savage; and two grandchildren.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother: Wayne.

Cora Subbert

Funeral services for Cora Subbert of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 16 at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center in New Hampton with Msgr. Carl Schmitt officiating.

The pall was placed by her four children. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton. Pallbearers were: Richard Pitz, Mark Pitz, Mike Pitz, Brian Blietz, Jason Hackman, and Shawn Hackman. Honorary pallbearers were David Blietz, Ron Pitz, Jr., Jake Degues, and Randy Wheeler. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Cora, 95, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at her home.

Cora Subbert was born March 5, 1909 near Reilly Ridge, northeast of Lawler, the daughter of George Washington and Alice Gertrude (McGruder) Green. She attended school in Sumner and rural country school in Dayton Township. She graduated from New Hampton High School in 1926. She taught in rural schools around the New Hampton area.

On November 24, 1930 she married Leo Pitz at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia. Leo passed away on September 16, 1961. She lived most of her life in Chickasaw County and worked as a Nurses Aid in the O.B. Department at St. Joseph Hospital for 15 years, retiring in 1969.

On May 26, 1969 she married Andy Subbert. Andy passed away on May 16, 1976.

Cora was a member of Holy Family parish and Rosary Society and the American Council of Catholic Women.

She is survived by two sons: Gerald of Frederika and Ronald of Hoodsport, WA; two daughters: Shirley Pitz of New Hampton and Connie Blietz of Council Bluffs; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; two step sons: James Subbert of Los Angeles and Lowell Subbert of Fresno, CA; two step daughters: Phyllis Harms of Lanesboro and Darlene Barnhill of Eugene, OR.

Cora was preceded in death by her husbands; one son: LaVerne Pitz; two great-grandsons; her parents; five brothers: Joe, Vern, Clarence, Virgil, and Gerald; and five sisters: Angeline Zipse, Viola Sharp, Isadore Beier, Madonna Pitz, and Rose Mae Roethler.


Clarence McKay

Funeral services for Clarence Allan "C.A." McKay of rural Harmony, MN were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 22 at the Henrytown Lutheran Church in rural Canton, MN with Rev. Jeff Forbes and Minette Johnson officiating.

Clarence, 75, died Monday, July 19, 2004 at the Harmony Health Care Center in Harmony, MN.

Clarence McKay was born December 16, 1928 on the family farm. He attended Scotland Country School before graduating from Harmony in 1946. Clarence started farming with his dad.

On June 4, 1955 he married Betty Goertz at Wabasha, MN. They farmed.

He was a member of Henrytown Lutheran Church, and served 11 years as church president, and four years as trustee. He was a member of the Midland Board of Directors for 14 years. He also served on various other boards and community groups.

He is survived by his wife Betty; two sons: Mark of Harmony, MN and Michael of Rochester, MN; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother; and one sister.


Mark Rethamel

Funeral services for Mark Rethamel of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 27 at Holy Family parish-St. Mary's Center in New Hampton with Monsignor Carl Schmitt officiating.

The pall was placed on the casket by his parents, sisters, and brother. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in New Hampton. Pallbearers were his nephews: Shane Shekleton, Garrett Shekleton, Jacob Rasing, Travis Rasing, Blake Rasing, Lee Rethamel, and Jaren Winkey. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Mark, 37, died Saturday, July 24, 2004 at his home of natural causes.

Mark William Rethamel was born October 3, 1966 the son of Merle William and Alice Mae (Reicks) Rethamel. He attended school in New Hampton and was a graduate of New Hampton High School class of 1985. Mark had worked at the Woodring Fur Farm for 22 years.

Mark loved to vacation with his family. He liked to fish, garden, snowmobile, play cards, and go 4-wheeling. Mark had a life-long illness and was diagnosed in the 1980s as having Wagner's Disease.

He is survived by his parents: Merle and Alice of New Hampton; three sisters: Shari Rasing of New Hampton, Sheila Shekleton of New Hampton, and Sandi Honts of Muscatine; and one brother: Bill of Muscatine.

Mark was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents: Joe and Susan Reicks; and paternal grandparents: Ray and Helen Rethamel.


Leo Puffer

Funeral services for Leo Puffer were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 26 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating.

Interment was in Lincoln Cemetery in rural Ridgeway. Pallbearers were: members of the Clarence Bily Post #467, Spillville and Helof Holm VFW Post #1977, Decorah. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Leo, 87, died Friday, July 23, 2004 at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Elma after a long illness.

Leo Joseph Puffer was born May 14, 1917 near Fort Atkinson, the son of Matthais and Mary (Doubek) Puffer. He attended St. John's Catholic School in Fort Atkinson. He joined the US Army in January 1942. He attended basic training at Camp Wolters, Mineral Wells, TX. In June 1942, he was sent to the Hawaiian Islands and attended motor mechanics school. He then went to eastern Australia near Rockhampton. He was in the 19th Infantry, 24th Division, which was already overseas when the war began. This was under General MacArthur's command. The next move was to New Guinea and various islands in that area. He returned to the Philippines. Leo took part in the landing on Leyte in October 1944. The remainder of the war was spent in the Phillippines. Leo attained the rank of Sergeant. He returned to the states in August of 1945 and received his discharge at Fort Leonardwood, MO. He spent 42 months in the service with 39 of those overseas.

On November 7, 1947 he married Helen Hotvedt in Chicago, IL. He was a self-employed backhoe operator until 1980, when he retired.

Leo enjoyed fishing, hunting, dancing at the Inwood and was an avid Cubs fan. He spent the last 10 years at the Colonial Manor in Elma.

Leo was preceded in death by his wife Helen in 1985; one son: John; his parents; one sister: Cecelia Pinter; one brother: Bernard; and one sister and brother in infancy.


Irene Nichols

Funeral services for Irene Nichols were held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Minneapolis, MN with Rev. Charles Froehle officiating.

Interment was in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were: Bruce Halstead and Robert Junjak. Pallbearers were: David and Joseph Hegge, John and George Carlson, Scott Halstead, and James Lund.

Sister Mary Hargrafen presided over a memorial service which was held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 25 at the Conway Funeral Home.

Irene, 89, died Thursday, July 22, 2004 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Irene R. Nichols was born January 1, 1915 at Invergrove, MN, the daughter of Peter and Malvina (Gaudette) Gonier. She graduated from St. Margaret's Academy in Minneapolis, and attended the University of Minnesota briefly.

On May 4, 1935 she married Willard I. Nichols at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Minneapolis. They were the parents of a daughter, Rebecca Ann, who died in 1956 at age nine and one half.

During WWII, from 1942 through 1946, she was Director of the USO Center in Minneapolis, supervising over 1200 junior and senior hostesses for activities at the Naval Base, Fort Snelling, Camp Savage, and the USO Hospitality Centers at the railroad and bus depots, in addition to the USO Center. In 1963, she became involved in travel, and helped start the Gregg Nelson Travel Agency of Eden Prairie, MN, as director of International Travel and group tours, and served as a professional tour escort worldwide. After her retirement in 1978, she and her husband moved to Cresco to make their home.

She was a member of the American Society of Travel Agents, St. Margaret's Alumnae Association, Iowa Federation of Women's Clubs, Howard County Hospital Auxiliary, Howard County Historical Society, and served on the Evans Memorial Home Board of Directors.

She is survived by a foster son: Robert Junjak of Texarkana, AR; two foster granddaughters; and three foster great-grandchildren.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband Willard in 1988; one daughter: Rebecca Ann; her parents; and two sisters: Berniece Eilitz and Joan Carlson.


Frances Urban

Funeral services for Frances Urban were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 27 at the Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. John A. Moser officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were her grandchildren. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Frances, 82, died Sunday, July 25, 2004 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco where she has lived since November of 2003.

Frances Urban was born April 17, 1922 in Howard County near Cresco, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Blazek) Stepan. She attended the rural school. As many young girls her age, she started working at home. She eventually received her GED.

On September 22, 1943 she married Louis Urban at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They made their home in the Cresco area and retired to Cresco after the farm. Frances worked at the Howard County Hospital for over 20 years and retired from the laundry department.

She was a member of the Notre Dame Parish, the Altar and Rosary Society, and liked to play cards, garden, crochet, and quilt.

She is survived by her children: Angie Kappes of Ridgeway, Larry of Charles City, Al of Kansas City, MO, and David of Sioux City; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Frances was preceded in death by her husband Louis on January 26, 1981; her parents; and one sister: Lillian Chihak.


Charles Martin, Jr.

Funeral services for Charles Martin, Jr. of Salem, AL were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 10 at Concord Baptist Church of Salem, AL with Rev. Bud Passmore and Raymond Jackson officiating.

Interment was in Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Fredericks Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Charles, Jr., 33, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at the Medical Center Hospital in Columbus, GA.

Charles Delmar Martin, Jr. was born October 1, 1970 in Phoenix City, AL, the son of Charles and Gail (Allen) Martin. After graduating from Smith Station High School in 1988, he won a scholarship to Opelika Tech and graduated in automobile mechanics. He was proud of his Automotive Service Excellence Certification and was presented the Outstanding Employee of the Year award for people with disabilities by the Governor of Alabama on October 26, 1995.

On September 28, 1994 he married Rebecca Huhe of Cresco. They made their home in the Opelika, AL area where he worked as an auto mechanic.

He enjoyed racing cars, hunting, fishing, and movies.

He is survived by his wife Becky; one son: Charles Ryan; one daughter: Leah, all of Salem, AL; his mother: Gail; one sister: Sandra Reddish, all of Opelika, AL; one brother: Johnny of Valley, AL; and maternal grandmother: Mary Lee Allen of Opelika.

Charles was preceded in death by his father.


Cora Dagit

Funeral services for Cora Dagit of Cresco were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 21 at the Cresco Community Chapel with Rev. Michael Simiele officiating.

Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Cora, 72, died Sunday, July 18, 2004 at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI from multiple complications from diabetes.

Cora Faye Dagit was born August 30, 1931 in Rockwell City, daughter of William and Nell (Meusburger) Griffith. Following graduation from Rockwell City High School she worked a bookkeeper at Westermans Lumber for two years.

On June 30, 1951 she married Keith Dagit from Churdan in the Church of Christ. After Keith's military service in Korea, they made their home on a farm near his family. In 1957 they purchased a farm on Valley Avenue south of Cresco.

They were youth leaders at the First Baptist Church and later one of five families who founded the Cresco Community Chapel.

She enjoyed playing the piano, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.

She loved to read and cook.

She is survived by her husband Keith; one daughter: Molly Goossen of Brazel; one son: Scott of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren; her mother: Nell Griffith of Rockwell City; and one brother: Jack of Little Rock, AR.

Cora was preceded in death by her father; and two sisters: Janet Frakes and Bonnie Wilkins.
