Clifford Tapp

Funeral services for Clifford Tapp of Cresco will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, December 1 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco.

Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Clifford, 89, died Sunday, November 28, 2004 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County.

Clifford L. Tapp was born October 13, 1915 in Osnabrock, ND, the son of Earnest and Edith Tapp. He was educated and spent his earlier years in Minnesota, where he was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith.

On March 19, 1941, he married Florence Niewald at St. Martin's Lutheran Church at Davis Corners. In 1943 they moved to Cresco and he, being a mechanic by trade, began working at the McKitrick Motor Co. as a mechanic. In 1952 he was approached by the public school board, who stated they were building a new bus garage east of the new school. They would like to have him start the garage and be the Bus Dispatcher, mapping out the routes, mechanic of the buses, and to drive one of the routes. At that time they only had six buses. When Clifford retired, some 30 years later, they had 55 vehicles.

Clifford loved to work with his hands, whether inventing things or making parts for things.

After retirement from the school he worked for H & S Motors for a number of years.

In 1943, he became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church serving on the church council and various boards and organizations.

He is survived by his wife Florence; one daughter: Florene Holten; two grandsons; one great-grandchild; and three brothers: Lloyd of LeRoy, MN, Vernon of Lake City, MN, and Kenneth of Austin, MN.

Clifford was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Maynard, Cecil, and Lester; and two sisters: Opal Jensen and Lucille Corson.


Winifred Johnson

Funeral services for Winifred "Winky" Johnson of Jesup will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, December 1 at Zion Lutheran Church Jubilee, rural LaPorte City with Rev. Ernest Elzey officiating.

Interment will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo. Pallbearers are: James Patten, Paul Peterson, George Schmitz, Chad McNamara, Raymond Snyder, and Russell Zuck. White Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Winifred, 69, died Saturday, November 27, 2004 at the Cedar Valley Hospice House in Waterloo of cancer.

Winifred Jo Johnson was born March 5, 1935, the daughter of Winfield and Irma (White) Shadman. Following graduation from West High School, she married Ronald Dee Johnson on June 16, 1956 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waterloo. They moved to rural Jesup in 1961, and after spending 13 years in South Carolina, came back to Jesup in 1999.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church Jubilee in rural LaPorte City.

She is survived by five daughters: Jodylinn Peterson of Jesup, Pamela Schmitz of Jesup, Cindy Patten of Waterloo, Dawn Johnson of Stamforn, CT and Melissa Brown of Cresco; 11 grandchildren; three sisters: Roxalon Stevens of Hudson, Randy Kapler of Waterloo, and Terie McNamara of Waterloo; and two brothers: Ronald of Sacramento, CA and William of Waterloo.

Winifred was preceded in death by her husband Ronald on July 5, 2000; her parents; and two sisters: Sunny Johnson and Lenora Shadman (in infancy).


Lucille McCormick

Funeral services for Lucille McCormick of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 30 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

Interment was in St. Bridget's Catholic Cemetery in Bluffton. Honorary pallbearers were: Matthew Denny, Brett Denny, Corey Courtney, Casey Corcoran, Nathan Courtney, and Kyle McCormick. Pallbearers were: Mike Donlon, David Courtney, Wayne Courtney, Craig Courtney, Lynn McCormick, and Troy McCormick. Schluter - Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Lucille, 98, died Saturday, November 27, 2004 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah after a short illness.

Lucille Agnes McCormick was born October 8, 1907 in Harmony, MN, the daughter of James and Margaret (McKenna) Farrell. She attended school in Harmony and then at Notre Dame in Cresco. Lucille worked as a housekeeper for a short time before she was married.

On November 24, 1924, she married Phillip McCormick at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. They farmed near Bluffton until they retired in 1970 and she moved to Decorah in 1988. She was an active member at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Bluffton. She was in charge of the Labor Day picnics at the church for many years.

She enjoyed playing cards, dancing, sewing, and baking.

Lucille entered the nursing home on January 27, 2003.

She is survived by one son: Gene of Ridgeway; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Lucille was preceded in death by her husband Phillip on June 29, 1987; one daughter: Margaret Courtney; two sisters: Loretta Smith and Leona Reiche; and two brothers: Roy and Emmett in infancy.


Regina Praska

Funeral services for Regina Praska of Elma were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 24 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes.

Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Church Cemetery in Lourdes. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Regina, 92, died Monday, November 22, 2004 at the Colonial Manor in Elma of natural causes.

Regina Mary Praska was born February 23, 1912 near Lourdes, the daughter of Frank and Abbie (Kubik) Nibaur. She received her schooling at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School in Lourdes. After her schooling she helped her parents at home and helped the neighbors with housework and caring for the neighbors children.

On October 21, 1930, she married Joseph Praska at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. They farmed west of Lourdes until their semi-retirement, when they moved to Lourdes in 1959. After moving to Lourdes the couple raised chickens and worked in the garden. She also did housework and babysitting for families in the area.

She enjoyed baking, especially chocolate angel food birthday cakes and kolaches, playing cards, and Parcheesi. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and Altar Rosary Society.

She is survived by three children: Regina Gansen of Elma, Joseph of Elma, and Marie Rosonke of Charles City; 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister: Mildred Flaherty of Cresco.

Regina was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Sr. (1980); one grandson; her parents; two sisters: Rosella Nibaur and Arlene Hyke; and two brothers: Raymond and Leo in infancy.

Irene Haugen

Funeral services for Irene Haugen of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 29 at the Madison Lutheran Church in rural Decorah with Pastor Phillip Olson and Rev. Marion Pruitt-Miller officiating.

Interment was in Madison Lutheran Cemetery in rural Decorah. Pallbearers were: Jim Dahlen, Dean Merhiy, Paul Haugen, David Haugen, Marvin Hovden, Donald Hovden, and Rodney Grindeland. Schluter - Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Irene, 91, died Thursday, November 25, 2004 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah following a long illness.

Irene Eleanor Haugen was born April 22, 1913 in Kindred, ND, the daughter of Oscar and Minnie (Blilie) Dahlen. She was baptized on May 25, 1913 and confirmed at the Norman Lutheran Church in Kindred. Irene attended and graduated from Kindred High School in 1931. She worked for a short time in Sioux Falls, SD. While in Sioux Falls, Irene was fortunate to be able to sing with Myron Floren and at the World's Fair in Chicago. She entered the WAVES on June 15, 1944. She served in Bronx, NY and Farragut, ID and was discharged on December 7, 1945. Irene moved with her sister, Doris to Decorah.

On September 17, 1949, she married Norviel Haugen at the Madison Lutheran Church. They farmed and she also worked for Wimmers Dept. Store, Rosel Drug Store, Luther College Food Service and the Aase Haugen Nursing Home, retiring in 1976.

She enjoyed sewing, baking and doing upholstery. Irene also loved music and was Choir Director at the Madison Church, where she also was the Sunday school teacher and superintendent. She moved into Decorah in the early 60s where she was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Altar Guild. Irene especially enjoyed her cat, Butterscotch.

She is survived by two sons: Mike and Carleton, both of Decorah; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and two sisters: Frances Dahlen and Ardyce Grant, both of Fargo, ND.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband Norviel in 1975; her parents; two brothers: William and George; and three sisters: Grace Gangnes, Marjorie Merhiy and Doris Grindeland.


Kenneth Losee

Funeral services for Kenneth Losee of Riceville will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 3 at the Riceville United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael Carey officiating.

Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville on Thursday from 4:00-7:00 p.m.

Kenneth, 70, died Monday, November 29, 2004 at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Kenneth Losee was born May 16, 1934 in Lake City, the son of Marion and Geneive Stephanie Losee. He graduated from Barnum High School in Barnum.

On June 25, 1960, he married Elaine Hofland at the 6 Mile Grove Church in Lyle, MN. He served his country in the Army. Kenneth worked for the Mower County Highway Department, worked on the family farm, and hauled milk. They moved to Riceville in 1990.

He is survived by two sons: Duane of Riceville and Roger of Austin, MN; three grandchildren; one brother: John of Claremont, MN; and two sisters: Martha Bates of Hopkins, MN and Linda Danks of Medford, MN.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his wife Elaine in 1994; and his parents.


Elmer Leitz

Funeral services for Elmer Leitz of Harmony, MN were held at10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 29 at the St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Granger, MN.

Interment was in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Granger, MN. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Elmer, 92, died Thursday, November 25, 2004 at the Harmony Health Care in Harmony.

Elmer W. Leitz was born March 10, 1912 in rural Granger, MN, the son of Henry and Suzanne (Prey) Leitz.

On October 16, 1940, he married Evelyn Ashton at Preston, MN. They farmed in the Granger area until 1975. He then opened a small engine repair business. In 1994 they moved to Harmony to enjoy their retirement.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn; two sons: Raymond of Waterloo and Dale of Champlin, MN; and three grandchildren.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Manley; and three sisters: Violet Krege, Laura Bock, and Ella Leitz.


John Henry

Funeral services for John Henry of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 29 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

Interment was in St. Benedict's Catholic Cemetery in Decorah. Honorary pallbearers were: Mark Sutton, Bob Usgaard, Vernon Spilde, Stan Fullerton, Dr. Drew Pellett, Lester Guttebo, and Lise and John Hedstrom. Pallbearers were: Mike Henry, Craig Henry, Steven Henry, Kirk Johnson, Jerome Kingsley, Lester McCauley, and Steve Hubbard. Schluter - Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

John, 93, died Thursday, November 25, 2004 at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility from a long illness.

John Joseph Henry was born April 12, 1911 on the family farm near Bluffton, the son of Thomas and Anna (Madden) Henry. He attended rural country schools in the Bluffton area. John farmed on the family farm that has been in his family for over 150 years. He retired in 1983 and moved to Decorah.

He enjoyed politics. He was a member of St. Bridget's while he was near Bluffton and St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah.

John was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Myles, Richard and James; and two sisters: Nellie Donlon and Estella Henry.

Doloris Torney

Funeral services for Doloris (Brockney) Torney, 75, of Riceville will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 9 at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Riceville.

Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Conway Funeral Home in Riceville and at the church an hour prior to services on Thursday.

Fred Lienhard

Fred, 94, died Monday, November 29, 2004 in Ft. Pierce, FL and will be buried in Busnell, Florida's Veteran's Cemetery.

Fred Conrad Lienhard was born April 4, 1910 in New Oregon Township, Howard County, the son of Gottfried and Lisette Lienhard. He attended rural grade school and went to Davenport to work; later he moved to Chicago, IL. He served during World War II with the 12th Army Air Command in North Africa and Sicily, Italy.

On June 27, 1946 he married Myrion Fox in Cresco and they moved to Florida.

He has a son, Fred Jr. and daughter-in-law, Rita, with whom he made his home the past few years in Ft. Pierce. After retirement Fred was an active volunteer in his home community of Cocoa Beach.

He is survived by one son: Fred Jr.; and one sister: Charlotte Rink of Cresco.

Fred was preceded in death by his wife Myrion; his parents; two brothers: Walter and Otto; and three sisters: Marie Zoeckler, Mina Batten, and Lydia Evans.


LuVerne Koshatka

Funeral services for LuVerne "Luke" Koshatka were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 29 at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Very Reverend Rudolph T. Juarez officiating.

Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Protivin. Pall bearers were: Kenneth Koshatka, Larissa Koshatka, Michael Porter, Donald Koshatka, Richard Gilmore, and Adrian Porter.

Luke, 80, died Friday, November 26, 2004 at Mercy Hospital of Waldenstrom's lymphoma.

LaVerne Koshatka was born January 8, 1924 near Protivin, the son of William and Adella (Jirak) Koshatka. He graduated from Rudolphinum High School in Protivin in 1941 and attended Drake University.

On November 9, 1951, he married Beverly Johnston at All Saints Church in Des Moines. He was office manager and buyer for Breese Auto Parts stores. Prior to moving to Iowa City in 1962, he was manager for the Massey Ferguson Sales Office in Des Moines.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Church and Knights of Columbus #2744 in Protivin.

He is survived by his wife Beverly; two daughters: Dr. Cynthia Koshatka Porter of Fairfax Station, VA and Shirley Gilmore of Iowa City; two grandchildren; and one brother: Cletus Koshatka of Protivin.

Luke was preceded in death by his parents.


Lyle Hanlon

Funeral services for Lyle Hanlon of Harmony, MN were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 7 at the Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony with Rev. Donald P. Schmitz officiating.

Interment was in St. Agnes Church Cemetery at Plymouth Rock. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Lyle, 83, died Thursday, December 2, 2004 at his home of cancer.

Lyle Vincent Hanlon was born April 27, 1921 in Winneshiek Co., the son of Thomas and Mary Ellen (Snider) Hanlon. Lyle attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated high school in Canton, MN. He worked on the family farm until enlisting in the Navy in 1942. During WWII he served as a Gunner's Mate 3rd class on the U.S.S. Hatfield until his honorable discharge in 1945.

On May 1, 1950, he married Joyce Gloria Vang. Lyle worked in Harmony for Severson Oil Co. He and Eldon Sauer later became co-owners of Lyle and Eldie's Conoco until his retirement in 1984.

He enjoyed golfing, fishing, travel, reading westerns, playing cards, grilling steak on Sundays, yard work, gardening, and having coffee and shaking dice with friends.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony.

He is survived by his wife Joyce; one son: William of Harmony, MN eight daughters: Deborah Bledsoe of Conroe, TX, Bonita Stensby of Renton, WA, Lorelei Shaw of Blooming Prairie, MN, Patricia Brink of Rochester, MN, Barbara Torgerson of Harmony, MN, Dawn Zimmer of Prior Lake, MN, Karen Raguse of Brainerd, MN, and Sharon Martin of Lancaster, WI; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Mae Armstrong and Delores Quinn.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Thomas, Joseph, Francis, Byron, and Paul; and four sisters: Rita Kingsley, Agnes Armstrong, Esther Carolan, and Ethel Sexton.


William Gansen

Funeral services for William "Bill" Gansen were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 6 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Chester with Rev. Ray Atwood officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Elma. Honorary pallbearers were: Jim Kitchen, Roger Lepa, Greg Lichty, Gene Pisney, Leland Truka, Clem Kapler, Hartzel Wesseling, and Bob Miller. Pallbearers were: David Gansen, Richard Gansen, Kenny Gansen, Brian Bronner, Dean Gansen, Roger Gansen, James Gansen, and Bill Gansen. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

William, 99, died Friday, December 3, 2004 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

William Lavern Gansen was born January 19, 1905 in Howard County, near Elma, the son of William J. and Elizabeth (Biwer) Gansen. He attended school at Immaculate Conception Grade School. While attending school, he worked for a grocery store to earn a little spending money. Following his education, he returned back home to help on the farm.

On January 31, 1928, he married Loretta Richardson. When they started farming, they rented a place near Elma until about 1937, then they moved to the Lou Maronde farm northeast of Lime Springs for five years and in 1941, they purchased the present farm and moved onto it in 1942. They lived there until October of 2004 and they moved into the Cresco Care Center.

While farming, Bill ran a sand and gravel business, ran a chain saw business, and sold seed corn, and self unloading chopper boxes.

He was a township captain in the Farm Bureau, increasing membership. He was a member of the St. Stephen's Church Board, and helped build the new church. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, and in his spare time loved to hunt and fish. In his younger years, he loved to dance and bowl.

He is survived by his wife Loretta; three sons: Donald of Clear Lake, Robert of Rochester, MN, and James of Stenchfield, MN; one daughter: Lois Bronner of Lime Springs; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchilden; and one sister: Ann Leibold of Venice, CA.

William was preceded in death by one son: Dale; one grandson; his parents; five brothers: Matt, Ken, Lawrence, Phillip, and John; and one sister: Gertrude Womack.

Dean White

Funeral services for Dean White of Granger, MN were held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, December 10 at Notre Dame Parish - Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry Charipar officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Dean, 54, died Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at the Harmony Health Care Center in Harmony, MN.

Dean Francis White was born October 13, 1950 in Cresco, the son of Frank and Alice (Mohs) White. He spent his first three years living on a farm south of Spring Valley, MN. His family moved to the Cresco area where they lived while he was growing up. He was active in 4-H and F.F.A. He attended the Zion Methodist Church.

On June 13, 1970, he married JoAnne Schmitt. Dean farmed all of his life and was involved in various committees of the local feed coops. In March of 1979, he moved his family to the Granger area, which is where he farmed until his death from a long battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife JoAnne of Granger; three children: Francis, Brian, and Denise Haywood; three grandchildren; two sisters: Dorothy Kupka and Vicki White, both of Cresco; and two brothers: Jerry of Lime Springs and Gary of Billings, MT.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents.


John Beecher

Funeral services for John "Ed" Beecher of Elma were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 11 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Elma. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ed, 86, died Monday, December 6, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of natural causes.

John Edward Beecher was born December 1, 1918 at Dougherty, the son of John Francis and Luella (McCabe) Beecher. At an early age he moved with his family to a farm three miles east of Elma. He attended Immaculate Conception Academy in Elma graduating in 1935 and furthered his education at Loras College. After college, he began farming with his father on their farm east of Elma.

On February 3, 1941, he married Peggy Kobliska at the Immaculate conception Church in Elma. They resided on the Beecher family farm east of Elma, where they farmed and Ed worked as an auctioneer with his father and later by himself conducting auctions for farm sales, household sales and also at the Charles City and Cresco Sale Barns, until their retirement. They remained on the farm until July 19, 1994, when a tornado took their home and they moved to Elma.

After his retirement he enjoyed golfing and playing cards.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4144 in Elma, the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Davis Assembly, and the Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. He also served as a board member for the Howard County ASCS.

He is survived by his wife Peggy; seven children: Sharon Gansen of Elma, Lindy of Eagan, MN, Pat Arnold of Elma, Betty Jo Hastings of Alta Vista, Mary Roths of New Hampton, Marcia Grimm of Charles City, June Laures of Waukon; 23 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two brothers: W. Louis of Waterloo and Bernard of Waterloo; and three sisters: Ronnie Riley of Charles City, Mary Jane Richmond of Painesville, MN, and Luann Hutchins of Charles City.

Ed was preceded in death by one grandson; his parents; and one brother: Gerald in infancy.


Mary Siesseger

Memorial services for Mary Siesseger were held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 7 at Valley Presbyterian Church, Green Valley, AZ.

Mary E. Siesseger was born in Howard County, the daughter of Reed and Myrtle Miles. She graduated from Cresco High School. She completed her higher education at Coe College and the University of Northern Iowa where she earned her Master's Degree. Her 35-year teaching career included Iowa schools in Mt. Vernon, McIntire and Independence.

She gave of her time and talents to hospice, Stephen Ministry, her church choirs, community, educational and other church organizations.

She is survived by one daughter: Jane Kosterlitzky; and one brother: Alfred.

Eleanor Lynch

Eleanor, 89, died Friday, December 10, 2004 at the New Hampton Care Center.

Eleanor Rose Lynch was born September 12, 1915 in rural Fayette County near Waucoma, the daughter of Joseph and Barbara (Rausch) Balk. She attended St. Mary's Catholic grade school and was a 1934 graduate of Waucoma High School.

On February 22, 1938, she married John Joseph Lynch of Lawler at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma. They farmed northeast of Lawler.

She loved to read. She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and Rosary Society of Lawler and a 50-year Catholic Daughter of Americas member.

She is survived by six sons: Jack of Lawler, Gene of Lawler, Don of Burlington, Pat of Deer Trail, CO, Bob of New Hampton, and Steve of Lawler; four daughters: Geraldine Busta of Lawler, Mary Rosonke of New Hampton, Madonna Hoehn of Lawler, and Diane Hoffman of Chandler, OK; 28 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband John on October 3, 1975; her parents; three sisters: Elizabeth Blong, Margaret Blong, and Theresia Balk; and four brothers: Herman, Leo, Hugo, and Lawrence.


Carolyn Papenheim

Carolyn, 58, died Thursday, December 9, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Carolyn Ann Papenheim was born September 22, 1946 in New Hampton, the daughter of Raymond and Hildegard (Orthaus) Papenheim. She received her education at St. Mary's Catholic School in North Washington and was a 1964 graduate of New Hampton High School. She continued her education at the University of Iowa, and in 1968, graduated with a degree in Recreation. Shortly after college Carolyn worked for the towns of Hartford, Farmington, and W. Hartford, CT in Leisure Services positions.

In 2003 she retired and moved back to the family farm east of North Washington.

She enjoyed gardening, sewing, cross stitching, and baking.

She is survived by two brothers: Paul of Seattle, WA and Gary of Cedar Falls; and four sisters: Betty Biwer of West Des Moines, Jane Phelps of Rochester, MN, Mary Schmidt of Dakota, MN, and Norma Paumen of Carmel, IN.;

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Barb Thoma and Phyllis Larson; and one brother: Merlin.


Doloris Torney

Funeral services for Doloris Torney were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 9 at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Riceville with pastor Michael Parris officiating.

Doloris, 75, died Saturday, December 4, 2004 at the Riceville Community Rest Home in Riceville.

Doloris Helen Torney was born January 20, 1929 in Howard County, near Saratoga, the daughter of William T. and Dorothy (Horstman) Kruger. She received her education in the rural school near her home. Following her schooling, she worked for families in the Saratoga area taking care of their house and children. After she became a little older, she moved to Waterloo and worked at Rath Packing.

On October 10, 1949, she married Leslie C. Brockney in the Little Brown Church at Nashua. They farmed until Les retired and they moved into Riceville. She helped on the farm, and worked at the New Haven Tavern for many years. In later years, before moving to Riceville, she worked at the Farmers Tavern in Riceville.

After Leslie's death on May 23, 1983, she married Gaylord Torney on September 15, 1990 at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. He died on March 31, 2003.

Doloris liked to crochet, do crafts, garden, cook and attend garage sales. She enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling, even going to Germany while her son was stationed there in the service.

She is survived by her children: Roger of Copperas Cove, TX, Rick of Riceville, Jerry of Mason City, and Sandra Brockney of Waterloo; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother: DeWayne Kruger of Waterloo, and Donna Hemann of Cedar Rapids.

Doloris was preceded in death by her two husbands; her parents; one brother: Donald; and her twin sister: Doris Starr Riha.


Edythe Howard

Funeral services for Edythe Howard of Beaver Dam, WI were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 14 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Rev. William Key officiating.

Edythe, 85, died Friday, December 10, 2004 at Cherry Meadows Hospice in Appleton, WI.

Edythe Howard was born April 30, 1919 in Cresco. She graduated from Carleton College as a geology major.

On October 6, 1943, she married John W. Howard of Cresco. They settled in Beaver Dam, WI in 1953 and became lifelong members of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. They owned Howard Motors in Beaver Dam for 30 years.

She loved to travel, play golf and play bridge.

She is survived by her children: Mary Jo Croake of Madison, Rob of Hudson, and Stephanie Vrabec of Menasha; and seven grandchildren.

Edythe was preceded in death by her husband John; and two sisters: Norma Ellis of Freeport, IL and Gertrude Rinaldo of Downer's Grove, IL.


Leonard Kleiss

Leonard, 88, died Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.

Leonard Kleiss was born May 8, 1916 in Chickasaw County, west of Fredericksburg, the son of Adolf and Bertha (Bartelt) Kleiss. He attended rural country school.

On February 12, 1939, he married Viola Kirchmann at the Spring Fountain Lutheran Church, west of Sumner. They farmed in the rural Fredericksburg area. In 1992 they moved into Fredericksburg.

He enjoyed farming, fishing and traveling. Leonard moved into the Assisted Living unit in the Hillcrest Nursing home in Sumner.

He is survived by his wife Viola; one son: Stan of Clintonville, WI; three daughters: Bonnie Erickson of Readlyn, Diane Aldrich of Tuscon AZ, and Becky Bank of Ft. Dodge; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Leonard was preceded in death by one son: Bill; his parents; four brothers: Ewald, Herbert, Arnold, and Henry; and three sisters: Clara Whitnable, Edna Burmaster, and Agnes Barth.


Loyal De Sloover

Loyal, 84, died Thursday, December 9, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Loyal Valentine De Sloover was born November 28, 1920 on a farm near Riceville, the son of Victor and Katherine (Linkenmeyer) De Sloover. He was baptized at the Catholic Church in Riceville and later confirmed there. He attended country school in Riceville until he was 10 years old and the family moved to Lawler. He continued going to country school near their farm, graduating from the eighth grade and receiving his diploma from the court house in New Hampton. Loyal continued helping his father with farming, carpenter work and with hired labor until enlisting in the Army in February of 1942. He received his training in Little Rock, AR and Orlando, FL before serving in the infantry during World War II. He received the Golden Gloves award while in the Army. He was honorably discharged as a Private 1st Class on October 25, 1945.

On February 12, 1946, he married Florence Bemis at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler. Upon retiring in the fall of 1983, he continued helping his son farm.

He loved farming, and enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing, traveling, and playing cards.

He became a resident of the New Hampton Care Center in June of 2004.

He was a member of The American Legion and Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler.

He is survived by his wife Florence; two sons: Larry of Waucoma and Garry of Wamego, KS; one daughter: Diane Maklenburg of New Hampton; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother: Bernard of Waucoma; and four sisters: Berneice Langreck of Waucoma, Verda Langreck of West Union, Katherine Langreck of Lawler, and Betty Tillman of Waucoma.

Loyal was preceded in death by his parents.


Geneva Gager

Funeral services for Geneva Gager of Cresco will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 16 the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.

Geneva, 91, died Sunday, December 12, 2004 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County of natural causes.

Geneva Ruth Gager was born April 3, 1913 in Bonair, the daughter of Henry and Ruth (Fye) Fenske. She was baptized in the Cresco First Baptist Church at an early age. From Bonair, the family moved to Princeton, MN then later moved to Osceola, MO. In the early 1930's the family moved to Cresco. Geneva graduated from the eighth grade.

On March 10, 1934, she married Floyd Gager in Charles City. While Floyd was in the service during World War II, Geneva worked as a store clerk for Bob Davies in Cresco. After the war, Floyd and Geneva adopted Mike Gager at the age of four.

She was a Cub Scout Den Mother for seven years and was a helper at the Evans Home.

She loved sewing, gardening, homemaking, taking photos, and her family history.

She is survived by her husband Floyd, one son: Mike of Modesto, CA; one granddaughter; two brothers; and one sister.

Geneva was preceded in death by her parents; and four brothers.

Dr. Curtis Rainy

Funeral services for Dr. Curtis Rainy of Elma were held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 18 at the United Methodist Church in Elma with Rev. Marshall Monthei officiating.

Dr. Rainy, 84, died Monday, December 13, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Curtis William Rainy was born February 19, 1920 at Danforth, SD, the son of Charles and Mabel (Hudson) Rainy. He was raised in Huron, SD and remained there until his graduation from Huron College. On December 31, 1941 he enlisted in the US Army and saw active duty in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He held the rank of Sergeant at the completion of his Army Tour of Duty which ended August 17, 1944. He completed his medical course at Vanderbilt University in 1949. From 1949 to 1953 he served as an Officer in the Army Medical Corp and rose to the rank of Major while serving in Korea.

On August 21, 1950, he married Caroline Ashley in Lake Junaluska, NC. Following their marriage and after his completion of active duty during the Korean Conflict, they moved to Cedar Rapids, where he completed a 14 month residency at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. They moved to Elma on September 15, 1954 where he has remained ever since.

Dr. Rainy was a General Practitioner at the Elma Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital, now Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton, and assisted with General Surgery at Allen Hospital in Waterloo for 33 years, retiring from his hospital duties in March of 1987. He continued his practice in Elma until June of 1989. Throughout his years of being a General Practitioner he delivered 1004 babies and continued in very close ties with many of them and their families.

He was well known for his flower gardens, especially the roses. In the past he won numerous awards in floral arrangement and was very skilled in sewing.

He was a very active member of the Elma United Methodist Church where he served as the church organist and in many other capacities, Elma American Legion John Frahm Post, Alta Vista VFW Post 4069, Elma Boy Scouts, Sigma Alpha Epsilon College Fraternity, the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity and in the town of Elma and surrounding communities.

Dr. Rainy's influence and leadership in helping to direct the future of the Elma area was recognized in February 2004 when he was inducted into the Times Plain Dealer Hall of Fame.

He is survived by one daughter: Chris Lipscombe of Gulfport, MS; one son: Charles Rainy of Rochester, MN; and four grandchildren.

Dr. Rainy was preceded in death by his wife Caroline on February 14, 1997; his parents; two brothers: Jack and Ercil; and two sisters: Marlys Vasknetz and Marge Jensen.


Larry Jones

Memorial services for Larry "Mallard" Jones of Cresco were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 18 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway with Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson officiating.

Larry, 52, died Wednesday, December 15, 2004 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County.

Larry Joseph Jones was born July 7, 1952 in Cresco, the son of Willard and Esther (Drtina) Jones. He graduated from Crestwood High School in 1970. After high school, Larry was employed by Carlson's Construction in Decorah. He was later employed by Howard County on January 4, 1982.

On September 11, 1982, he married Karlene Marie Qualley.

His hobbies included camping, fishing, taking his girls shopping, and family vacations. He also took great joy in driving around Prairie du Chien, WI, spending time at Cabela's, eating cheese curds, and going to the boat.

Larry was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March of 2004. After his diagnosis, he had three wishes: to see Lacey graduate, teach Kally how to drive, and walk Sadie down the aisle. He was blessed to achieve all of these accomplishments.

He is survived by his wife Karlene of Cresco; three daughters: Sadie Johnson, Lacey and Kally Jones, all of Cresco; one sister: Dianne Brudelie; and one brother: Charles Neubauer.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents.

Alice Whalen

Alice, 82, died Sunday, December 19, 2004 at the Harmony Care Center after a three week hospitalization in St. Mary's Hospital.

Alice Jean Whalen was born July 5, 1922 in Sioux City, the daughter of Joseph and Victoria (Gallas) Budraka. After graduating from East High School, she attended Business College.

On January 16, 1947, she married Lenis Whalen and they moved to the State Line road in rural Harmony. Alice worked as bookkeeper for her husband's business and was a homemaker.

She enjoyed feeding the birds, watching figure skating and gymnastics, gardening, baking, crocheting, reading, and talking on the telephone.

She was a member of the Catholic Church's CCW, National Honor Society, American Legion Auxiliary and the Arthritis Foundation.

She is survived by eight children: Jan Roelofs of Cedar Rapids, Dr. Len Whalen of Zephyrhills, FL, Ralph of Taipei, Tiawan, John of Harmony, Mary Engesser of Spring Valley, Karen Needham of Houston, TX, Ruth Vaske of LeMars, and Laura Thomas of Willow, AK, and her other daughter Martha Sue de LaBruere of Spring Valley; 26 grandchildren; and one sister: Irene Jotzke of Sioux City.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband Lenis; her parents; and one sister: Louise Loya.


Wilma Thorson

Funeral services for Wilma Thorson of Harmony, MN were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 28 at the Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony with Rev. James R Radatz officiating.

Wilma, 83, died Thursday, December 23, 2004 at the Harmony Health Care in Harmony.

Wilma Lucy Thorson was born January 27, 1921 in Prosper, MN, the daughter of Harry and Myrtle (Greenslade) Harvey. She graduated from Burr Oak High School in 1938.

On November 25, 1941, she married Gerald Thorson. They lived in Decorah, West Union, Waseca, MN, Harmony, MN, and Austin, MN. Gerald died on May 25, 1976. She continued to live in Austin until three years ago when she returned to Harmony. She moved to the Harmony Health Care 10 days ago.

Wilma candled eggs in the Decorah Hatchery, was a secretary at Rochester Dairy, worked at Heco in Harmony and was also a cook for many years at the Austin Community College.

She enjoyed playing cards.

She was very active as a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin.

She is survived by one daughter: Judy Vagts of Harmony; four sons: Rev. Jerald of Hawthorne Woods, IL, Richard of Gardner, MT, Bradley of Harmony, and Tom of Appleton, WI; nine grandchildren; two step granddaughters; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Warren of Ridgeway and Clyde of Westfield, WI.

Wilma was preceded in death by her husband Gerald; her parents; four sisters: Florence, Pearl, Lila, and Mary; and two brothers: Roy and Fay.


Leonard Tupy

Funeral services for Leonard Tupy, 89, of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 29 at the Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco.

He is survived by one daughter: Sister Mary Ann Tupy O.S.F. of West Pointe, NE and one son: Bob of Cresco; and five grandchildren.


Edward Straw

Edward, 53, died Friday, December 24, 2004 in an automobile accident near Lawler.

Edward J. Straw was born October 14, 1951 in New Hampton, the son of Earl D. and Sarah F (Steadman) Straw. He attended grade school in Lawler and graduated from Turkey Valley High School in 1970. While in school he helped the Njus boys with farming and was active in wrestling where he placed fourth at the 1969 Iowa State Wrestling Tournament. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1970 and served in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1972.

On September 9, 1972, he married Karen Huber at St. John's Nepomucene Catholic Church in Ft. Atkinson. They lived in Kentucky while Ed was in the Army and moved back to Iowa where he worked for John Deere, Kohlmeyers as well as helping local farmers. They owned Straw's DX in Lawler and the last 20 years he worked for Brincks Construction, was a substitute mail carrier and bartended at the Brite Spot, Jackson Heights and the LT Tap.

He enjoyed remodeling his home, cutting wood, camping, canoeing and watching Turkey Valley and Iowa State athletic events.

He is survived by his wife Karen; one son: Craig of Lawler; two daughters: Jennifer Kurtenbach of Lawler and Cynthia Uhlenberg of Fredericksburg; four grandchildren; his mother: Sarah Straw of Lawler; three brothers: Dana of Daly City, CA, David of Littleton, CO; A.J. of Protivin; and five sisters: Karen Huber of Lawler, Vickie Mracek of Protivin, Paula Kout of Lawler, Diane Gebel of Lawler, and Deb Straw of Lawler.

Edward was preceded in death by his father; and one brother: Danny.


Charles Hemann

Funeral services for Charles Hemann of McIntire were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 28 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer with Father Mark Reasoner officiating.

Charles, 65, died Friday, December 24, 2004 at his home.

Charles Raymond Hemann was born May 3, 1939, the son of Joseph J. and Rosetta (Mauer) Hemann. He attended the Sacred Heart Catholic School in Meyer.

On June 1, 1963, he married Shirley Bartholomew at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Lyle, MN. Charles served his country in the National Guard during the Vietnam era. He was a semi-retired farmer.

He is survived by his wife Shirley of McIntire; two sons: Andy of Burlington, WI and Tim of Riceville; three daughters: Louann Zuehl of Toeterville, Loni Simonson of Spring Valley, and Charley Hemann of Lyle, MN; 16 grandchildren; one brother: DeVere of Keokuk; and one sister: Mary Margaret Tebben of Mission Viejo, CA.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters.


Marion Wyant

Marion, 75, died Thursday, December 23, 2004 at his home.

Marion Wyant was born January 4, 1930 in Tullivar, MO, the son of William Paul and Ethel (Arment) Wyant. He attended local schools graduating from Montour High School in 1948. He served his country in the U.S. Navy in 1949 serving for 32 months during the Korean War.

On March 1, 1953, he married Marilyn Werner in Lamont. They farmed in Central City, then Lamont and Saratoga before retiring into Riceville.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn of Riceville; three sons: Larry of Cresco, Jeffery of Plainfield, and Douglas of Riceville; three daughters: Debra Wyant of Riceville, Julie Carlson of Rochester, MN, and LuAnn Wyant of Riceville; five grandchildren; two brothers: Richard of Schertz, TX and Paul of Milan, MO; and one sister: Violet Blattel of Marshalltown; two half-brothers: Charles of Milan, MO and Daniel of Green City, MO; two step brothers: Jerry McDowell of Pontiac, MI and Glen Dillon of Pontiac, MI.

Marion was preceded in death by his parents; a step mother: Theodosia; one brother: John; and one grandson.


Richard Jones

Richard, 96, died Saturday, December 25, 2004 at the Illinois Veterans Home in Manteno.

Richard Benjamen Jones was born October 9, 1908 in Howard County, the son of Benjamen and Elizabeth (Stevens) Jones. He graduated from Cresco High School. He farmed in the Cresco area. Richard served 20 years in the U.S. Army and received a Bronze Star for Meritous Achievement during World War II and retired in October of 1964.

He is survived by three children: Beverly Valencic of Waukegan, IL, Richard of Loves Park, IL, and Thomas of Tamuning, Guam; one step daughter: Fern Milspaugh of Pleasonton, CA. 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister: Norma Johnson of Minnesota.

Richard was preceded in death by his first wife: Edith Denny; second wife: Oma Frosh; two children: Herbert Jones and Patricia Pichelmann; two grandchildren; his parents; and one sister: Ruth Sanderson.


Gladys Borsheim

Funeral services for Gladys Borsheim of Decorah will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, December 29 at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. Steven Jacobsen officiating.

Interment will be in the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. Schluter - Balik Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Gladys, 95, died Monday, December 27, 2004 at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah following a short illness.

She is survived by three daughters: Mavis Frey of Ridgeway, Elaine Slaymaker of Marion, and Janice Engelhardt of Granger, MN; three sons: Merton of Hiawatha, Ronald of Decorah and Elton of Decorah; one sister: Bessie Huseby of Willmar, MN; and two brothers: Orval Spilde of North Liberty and Gavin Spilde of Decorah.

Funeral services for Ted Lickteig of Cresco are pending with the Conway Funeral Home.

Ted, 95, died Monday, December 27, 2004 at Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.
