    WATERLOO, Iowa - Bud Castle, 80, of Waterloo passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at home.

    Funeral services are tentatively scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, July 5, at United Methodist Church, 21 Third St. N.W. in Rockford.

    Joan Mae (Krumrey) Cowell

    Joan Mae Cowell, 75, of Charles City, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

    Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Friday, July 5. Private family burial for Joan Cowell will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

    Joan Mae Krumrey Cowell was born August 19, 1937, at Charles City, the daughter of William and Daisy Mae (Cross) Krumrey. She attended school in Charles City. In May 1958, Joan was united in marriage to Allen Cowell in Albert Lea, Minn. The couple made their home in Charles City raising their family of five children. She loved spending time with her family and pets (dog Marly and cat Oscar), listening to music, watching television and reading the Bible. Joan's family was very special to her.

    Living family members include three children: Cindy (Tim) Kielman of Phoenix, Ariz., James (Katie) Cowell of Charles City and Ramona (Doug) Bailey of Charles City; nine grandchildren: Faithann (Aaron) White, Christina (Paul) Roethler, Aranda Cowell (friend Cory Poyner), Kenny (Kourtney) Hearn, Sami Freerks, Jeremiah (Lisa) Cowell, Elizabeth (Brad) Heinold, Tonya Bailey and Tara Bailey; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ethel Bledsoe of Charles City and Avis Nelson of Waterloo; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Allen; twin daughters, Toni Harris and Terri Hearn; one sister; and six brothers.

    William E. Grant

    INDEPENDENCE, IOWA - William E. Grant, 85, of Independence, Iowa died Friday, June 28, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

    William was born on May 28, 1928, in Marshalltown, the son of James R. and Mary M. (Coen) Grant. He attended the Marshalltown Schools and served in the US Army. Following his discharge he moved to Fairmont, Minn. and became employed as a heavy equipment operator with the city of Fairmont for 37 years prior to his retirement. William moved to Independence, Iowa in 2011.

    He is survived by two children; Mike Grant, Independence, and Patty (Ron) Kent, Waterloo; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Freida Willhite, Davenport, Mary Lou Long of Virginia; and a brother; John Grant, Charles City, and a very special friend Karen Phieman, Fairmont, Minn.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers; LeRoy Grant, Paul Grant, and a sister; Sue Grant.

    Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, Minn., with inurnment in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

    Arnold Haller

    Birth: May 4, 1921
    Death: July 7, 2013

    Arnold Haller, 92, of Charles City, Iowa, died Sunday, July 7, 2013, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

    Funeral services for Arnold Haller will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

    Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the church an hour prior to the service.

    Arnold Ernest Haller was born May 4, 1921, in Charles City, the son of Ernest and Elizabeth (Kruger) Haller. He was educated in the Charles City Public Schools, graduating in 1939. While in high school he was hired by a millwork firm and continued this work until World War II broke out. Arnold served in the U.S. Army. Before being shipped overseas he married the love of his life, Arlene Mitchell on January 9, 1944. During the war Arnold fought in the Italian Campaign serving with the 91st Infantry Division

    After the war Arnold made a smooth transition from serving his country to serving his community as a volunteer and businessman. For several years he continued working in the millwork business, living in Charles City and Cedar Falls. Haller Lumber Company was established in Marble Rock in 1953 and flourished for 40 years. During this time Arnold was one of the founders of the local Lions Club and the Winnebago Scout Reservation.

    He served on St. Paul's Lutheran Church Council, the volunteer fire department, the Rudd, Rockford, Marble Rock school board; he was a Boy Scout leader and worked as a Red Cross and YMCA volunteer among many other community activities. Arnold and Arlene and the community raised and nurtured three children.

    In their retirement years the couple returned to Charles City and continued their devotion and dedication to community, church and family. Their lives were enriched by their vibrant Ferguson Street neighborhood. During his later years when the deaths of loved ones tore at Arnold, the community gave back and rallied his spirit. Arnold was one of the last of the "Greatest Generation", millions of Americans who were hardened by a depression and tested by a war, they devoted their lives to service and duty and did so with joy.

    Living family members include two children; Marcia (Mark) Kogle of Puyallup, Wash. and Dennis (Janet) Haller of Decorah; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a sister, Lois Ann Slye of Des Moines; and a brother, Gene (Carolyn) Haller of Cedar Falls.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Arlene on March 5, 2005; a son, Jerry Haller; and a brother-in-law, Donald Slye.

    Josephine Higgins, 84, of Mason City died on Friday, July 5, 2013, at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab Center in Coralville.

    Albert Nelson Huffman

    Albert Nelson Huffman of Charles City passed Thursday, July 4, 2013.

    Al was born to Earl and Edna (Brookins) Huffman on January 2, 1931, in Waterloo. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1950. Al married Dorothy Wheat and to this union a son was born. Later, Al divorced and married Wanda Blum and to this union three children were born.

    Albert was a member of the Iowa National Guard. Al drove semi for Sperry Transportation and worked for Dale's Automotive until he retired.

    After retiring, he hauled grain for Carl Knapp and helped Jim Frisbee at the Red Roof Auction. He liked to fish and watch the NASCAR races and enjoyed his family visits.

    Albert is survived by his wife, Wanda; four children: Eugene Huffman Fulton of New York, Karla Cagley and Lon Huffman of Charles City and Cindy (Eugene) Lines of Ionia. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Nicholas and Kayla Huffman, Christina, Jason and Matthew Cagley, and Trentin and Alex Huffman; three great-granddaughters: Emily, Lilly and Breanna; a great-grandson, Jarrett Huffman; and a sister Arlene (Ralph) Wineman of Chrystal Lake, Illinois.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Darlene Blanck and in-laws Melvin and Lucille Roth, son-in-law Wes Cagley, and his faithful and loving companion dog, Penny.

    There will be graveside services at Sunnyside Cemetery on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at 3 p.m.

    Wyatt John Sinning

    Wyatt John Sinning, son of Jesi Sinning and Luke Schmitt, was born May 24, 1995 in Mason City, Iowa. He received his education at Emmetsburg High School and would be a Senior this fall. Wyatt was also currently attending Iowa Lakes Community College where he was excelling as a student in the welding program. Wyatt had a deep interest in not only welding, but working on tractors, cars and trucks. His dream after completing high school and college was to farm with his grandfather.

    Wyatt had been employed at Trettin/HET, Jensvold Motor, Sinning Farms, Inc., Christensen Farms and currently at Fareway. He was an active member of FFA.

    Wyatt was a country boy through and through. He loved country music, cowboy boots, and getting dirty on his four wheeler. He loved being outdoors and going fishing with his grandparents. He had a big heart and was always looking out for his friends and family.

    Wyatt passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2013 at the age of 18. Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Jesi Sinning of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Luke Schmitt of Green, Iowa, brothers, Maverick and Marshall Schmitt of Lake Mills, Iowa; his sister, Georgia Marsh of Emmetsburg, Iowa; maternal grandparents, Mike and Pat Sinning; paternal grandparents, Paul and Sylvia Hedrick; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; great grandparents, Eleanor Sinning and Myron and Sally Stanlander.

    Wyatt was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jo-Jo Parker, Norval Sinning and Dave Schmitt; and great grandparents, Nick and Dorothy Schmitt.

    Linda Jean Harris

    Linda Harris, 60, of Charles City died July 9, 2013, at her home.

    Linda Jean Harris was born July 17, 1952, at Charles City, the daughter of William and Mary (McCauley) Harris. She was raised in Charles City and graduated from Charles City High School in 1970. After high school Linda traveled and worked throughout Iowa. She was a very free spirit who was friendly to everyone. Linda loved all animals, but had a very soft spot in her heart for her dog, Mickey. She had a very do-it-yourself attitude and liked working with motorcycles and cars.

    Living family members include her daughter, Jessica Harris of Charles City; mother, Mary Harris of Charles City; brother, Jim Harris of Nashua; three sisters, Jody (Jim) Ehler of Solon, Jenny (Tom) Covington of Brandon and Kathy Harris of Charles City; along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

    Margaret Helen (Symonds) Druehl

    Margaret Druehl, 96, of Charles City, died Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Riverside Senior Living in Charles City.

    Funeral services for Margaret Druehl will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church. Pastor Forrest Cornelius will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City. Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the church an hour prior to the service.

    Margaret Helen Symonds Druehl was born June 1, 1917, in Charles City, Iowa, daughter of Frederick and Mabel (DeTienne) Symonds. She grew up in rural Floyd County, attended Carrville rural school and graduated from Charles City Community High School. After high school, she attended Gates Business College in Waterloo, then traveled to Washington D.C. to work as a civilian employee in the War Department. There she met and married Edward Druehl. They were united in marriage August 16, 1942. In 1946 they moved to Charles City and made their home there.

    Margaret was a member of the First Congregational Church. Active in the church, she taught Sunday school, served as Stewardship chairman in Women's Fellowship and World Missions, chairman in Church Women United and was a member of the Congregational Quilters. She was employed as secretary at the junior high school for 26 years and was a member of the Business and Professional Women. Margaret's interests included first and foremost her family.

    She was active in scouts, and made every holiday special for her children and grandchildren. She was an accomplished seamstress, enjoyed quilting, knitting, gardening, crafts, holiday decorating and reading. Margaret was an excellent cook, spoiling her family with wonderful meals and her specialties, including scrumptious pies, decorated cookies, popcorn balls, plum pudding and caramels. She loved having family gatherings and continued doing so well into her 80's. She will be dearly missed by us all.

    Living family members include two daughters, Jeanne (James) Ross of Dacono, Colo., Jan (Mike) Woods of Seymour, Ind.; a son, Gary (Mary) Druehl of Harper's Ferry; four grandchildren, Kevin Hicks, Jacque (Seth) Poe, Kurt (Andrea) Zimmer, Jeff (Kim) Ross; two step-grandchildren, Alicia (Chris) Lea and Josh (Tiffany) Woods; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Symonds of Nashua; and a niece Elaine (Bill) Mead of Charles City.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Edward; a grandson, Scott Druehl; a brother, Melvin Symonds; and a sister, Isabelle Dorwin.

    Birth: February 22, 1933
    Death: July 10, 2013

    Service Date: Monday, July 15, 2013 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

    Donald "Don" Stewart, 80, of Charles City, died Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

    A funeral Mass for Don Stewart will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd.

    Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 3-6 p.m. Sunday where there will be a Rosary at 3:00 p.m. and a Scriptural Prayer Service at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Monday at the church an hour prior to the service.

    Donald Ora Stewart was born February 22, 1933, near Floyd, the son of Mervyn and Bessie (Hennick) Stewart. He was raised in the Floyd area graduating from Floyd High School. After graduation, Don joined the Navy and served on a tanker ship for four years. While serving his country in the Navy Don was awarded with the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the China Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. When Don returned home he began working at White Farm where he was employed for 25 years.

    On May 16, 1964, he was united in marriage to Elayne Anderson at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The couple made their home in Floyd where all of their children were born, moved to Charles City, to a farm near Colwell and back to Charles City. Don also worked at Allied for 18 years before his retirement in 1998. Don was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the VFW. "Donnie" was a great father, good farmer, enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, camping and loved to spend time with his family and his cat, Smokey.

    Living Family members include his wife of 49 years, Elayne of Charles City; son, Rodney (Sue) Stewart of Charles City; three daughters: Teresa (Doug) Pierce of Floyd, Sally (Clarence) Marvin of Charles City and Sara (Kevin) Hemann of Charles City; six grandchildren: Valerie (Eric) Johnson, Dustin Pierce (friend Ashley Fischer), Tony Hemann, Rachel Sullivan, Ryan Hemann and Jordan Sullivan; ten step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers: Truman (Juanita) Stewart of Charles City, Wilbur (Dorothy) Stewart of Charles City and Gordon (Mable) Stewart of Floyd; three sisters: June Leaman of Rudd, Mary Stansberry of Littleton, Colo. and Norma (Vernon) Wamsley of Elkhart, Ind.; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

    He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Ruby Thorson.

    William "Bill" Gast

    (Died July 11, 2013)

    William "Bill" Gast, age 85, of rural Nora Springs, Iowa, died Thursday, July 11, 2013, at his home.

    Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2013, at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, 3269 Foothill Avenue, Osage, Iowa, with Pastor David A. Werges and Diaconal Minister Elayne J. Werges officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

    Bill was born on August 10, 1927, to Clifford and Alma (Paulson) Gast on the family farm in West Cedar Township. He graduated from Osage High School in 1945 and began farming with his dad on the farm that has been in the Gast family since 1884. On March 8, 1947, he married Colleen Kathan at the Congregational Church in Osage. To this union six children were born. Bill and Colleen continued to live on the family farm until 1982. At that time they moved to an acreage one mile south where he lived until his death on July 11th.

    Bill was a member of Rock Creek Lutheran Church his entire life where he was baptized and confirmed. He was a lifelong farmer and also worked at Armour in Mason City for several years.

    Family, faith and farming were his life. Bill cherished spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He especially enjoyed attending their sporting events. He also enjoyed many trips out west to visit family.

    Clarence H. "Rex" Theilen

    Clarence (Rex) Henry Theilen was born in a small farm house in rural Rockford, Iowa, on October 7, 1938, to Harry and Bessie Theilen. He attended elementary school in a one-room school house. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November of 1957 and served his country on the USS Boyd DD 544 until he was honorably discharged in May of 1962 and then continued in the Navy reserves for several years.

    After marrying the love of his life, Barbara Miller on January 11, 1959, at Morgan Methodist Church, rural Dows, Iowa, Rex spent his working career at Blue Ribbon Beef, Libbey Owens Ford, Northwestern Cement, and retired from the Mine, Safety, and Health Administration, Department of Labor, as an electrical inspector in 2002. He enjoyed watching and raising purple martins, playing his guitar and singing, was fascinated with astrology, attending Navy re-unions, watching Nascar and the Minnesota Vikings and most of all his five beautiful grandchildren.

    Rex is survived by his wife, Barbara, children Dawn Humburg and husband Keith, Humboldt, Debbie Dow and husband Jim, Rockford, grandchildren Dustin Humburg, Keslie Humburg, Dylan Humburg, Marcus Dow and Sabrina Dow. He is also survived by his sister, Ruby Hammje and husband Marlin.

    Clarence will be laid to rest in a Celebration of Life ceremony at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. N.E., Mason City on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at 11 a.m. with a short reception and burial following the ceremony. Visitation will be held prior to the ceremony from on Monday, July 15, 2013 from 5-7 p.m. at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel.

    David Volbrecht

    David Volbrecht, 73, a former resident of Charles City, died July 13, 2013 at his home in Wichita, Kansas.

    He was born Feb. 9, 1940 in Charles City, the son of Harold and Irma "nee" Schilling-Volbrecht. In 1956 he moved to Wichita, with his parents. He was employed by both Beech and Cessna aircraft plants and worked also as an auto mechanic.

    He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kay and two children, Douglas and Tammy of Wichita. He is also survived by a brother Dean (Janet) Volbrecht of Rochester, Minn.; two aunts, Demetra and Kathy Schilling of Charles City; uncle, Laverne (Dawn) Volbrecht of Derby, Kansas; nephew and nieces and several cousins.

    Dorothy Stewart

    Dorothy Stewart, 85, of Charles City, died Sunday, July 14, 2013, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

    A funeral Mass for Dorothy Stewart will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery at Floyd. Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday where there will be a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the church an hour prior to the service.

    Dorothy Ann Gabel Stewart was born July 12, 1928, at Floyd, the daughter of Irvin and Mary Margaret (Schlader) Gabel. She graduated from Floyd High School in 1946. Dorothy worked for a brief time before her marriage at Salsbury Laboratories. On June 16, 1947, she was united in marriage to Wilbur Stewart at Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. They farmed all their lives near Floyd. Dorothy was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Guild, Saint Mary's Circle, 60+ Card Club at Floyd, a card club that met monthly for over 60 years and the Floyd coffee club.

    She served as secretary of Oakwood Cemetery at Floyd for many years. Dorothy also babysat for her family as well as numerous friends. Her interests included playing cards, quilting, needlework, gardening and helping with the farm work. Family times were always special for Dorothy and she enjoyed every opportunity to share in their lives.

    Living family members include her husband, Wilbur Stewart of Charles City; seven children, Roger (Wyona) Stewart of Floyd, Richard (Barbara) Stewart of Floyd, Bruce Stewart of Floyd, Barbara (Greg) Easterly of Charles City, Dennis (Nancy) Stewart of Hampton, Diane (Robert) Roepke of Hazleton and Mary (Ron) Michael of Floyd; 20 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and a brother, Gerald (Jerri) Gabel of Mason City.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; and a grandson, Dean Roepke.

    Dennis Beaver, 56, of Charles City died Monday, July 15, 2013, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

    Dennis Lee Beaver was born June 3, 1957, at Charles City, the son of Lester and Peggy (Roy) Beaver. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1975 and attended North Iowa Community College. On September 24, 1988, he was united in marriage to Deborah Loftus at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Dennis worked for Smith Nursery for over 20 years and then operated his own lawn care and tree trimming business.

    His love for the outdoors was seen in his interest in nursery work and gardening. He was also very knowledgeable in the history of the various sports. Dennis was also an avid supporter of men's softball in Charles City. Family and friends were always important to Dennis and he looked forward to sharing life's experiences with them and helping them in any way he could.

    Living family members include his wife Deborah Beaver of Charles City; a son, Jacob Beaver of Charles City; his mother, Peggy Beaver of Charles City; brother, David (Deb) Beaver of Charles City; sister, Connie Beaver of Charles City; and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his father on June 6, 2008.

    Karen Ann Scopetski Fleming was born January 7, 1965, in Worcester, Massachusetts, the daughter of Dr. Peter and Eileen (Dowd) Scopetski. Karen graduated from Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough, Mass., with the class of 1983. In high school she played with the Greater Boston Youth Symphony. After graduating from high school, she received a music scholarship for playing the viola and studied music at Hartt School of Music in West Hartford, Conn. On May 17, 1986, she was united in marriage to Mark Fleming in Farmington, Conn. In 1990, the couple moved to Floyd. Karen was a gifted musician and as an adult played in amateur and professional orchestras, including the Cheslea Creek String Quartet in Mason City. She taught music lessons and worked with her husband at their music store, Mark's Music Studio, where she was employed at the time of her passing. Karen was a faithful member of the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Floyd. She was a member of their praise team and will be greatly missed. In her spare time Karen enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

    Karen loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with all of her heart and is now rejoicing in heaven. All of those who loved her know Heaven's orchestra is sweeter because she is there.

    Marie Frevert

    Nov. 22, 1903 - July 16, 2013

    Marie Frevert, 109, of Ames, Iowa, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Green Hills Health Care Center in Ames of which she had been a long time resident.

    Marie was born November 22, 1903, in Denison, Iowa, to Reverend Albert and Lydia (Schwieger) Gauger. She graduated from Garner High School then went on to attend Morningside College, Iowa State Teachers College and the University of Colorado. Marie taught country school in Klemme and town school in Hampton and Odebolt.

    On September 12, 1935, Marie was united in marriage to Warren Frevert at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Warren and Marie farmed near Rudd and she enjoyed being a housewife, gardening and caring for her family.

    Marie is survived by her sons, Bill (Marcie) Frevert of Emmetsburg, Jim (Clare) Frevert of Nevada; her daughter, Alice Srp of Camanche; her brother, C.J. Gauger of Ames; her grandchildren, Larry (Suzie) Frevert of Ashville, N.C., Anne (David) Cable of Rockford, Illinois, Daniel (Liz) Srp of Camanche, Julia (Chris) Brush of Lee's Summit, Missouri, Tom Srp of LeClaire, Jody (Dan) Zarnowiec, Anne (Greg) Sween, Kristen (Gerard) Ruiz and Kortney (Sheri) Freeman all of Emmetsburg; 19 great-grandchildren; and seven great-greatgrandchildren.

    Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1994; and three brothers, William, Harlan and Stanley Gauger.

    Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20, at the First United Methodist Church in Nevada with Deacon Brenda Hobson officiating. Burial of cremated remains will take place at a later date at Evergreen Cemetery in Rudd.

    March 8, 1931 - July 9, 2013

    Jacob (Jake) Rudolph Kummer, 82, of Charles City died Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at North Iowa Hospice in Mason City.

    Grave side funeral services were held with military honors at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, at Highland Cemetery Monticello, Wisconsin, with Rev. Mary Gafner officiating.

    Jacob R. Kummer was born March 8, 1931, to his parent's Jacob and Martha (Hess) Kummer. He graduated from New Glarus High School in Wisconsin then joined the United States Army in 1949 during the occupation of Japan and the Korean conflict. After his military service he returned to Monticello and obtained work running a milk route, then later owned and operated a bar. Jake later moved to California to work with his brother-in-law then moved to Charles City in 1961. He owned and operated the Texaco station for several years before selling the business.

    In 1963 Jake was united in marriage to Janice Carol Taft. Jake then worked for Dale Vanderlan until 1972 when he became self-employed as a mechanic and farmer. In the 1980s, Jake managed the shipping of White Farm tractors for Diamond Transportation until White Farm closed. Jake enjoyed playing cards, fishing and spending time with family and friends.

    Living family members include his four children Rhonda (Phil) Neely, Bluffton, S.C., Jacob (Lori) Kummer, Charles City, Carla Kummer, Charles City, Teresa Kummer, Charles City, eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two brothers William (Kay)Kummer, New Glarus, Wis., Jim Kummer, two sisters, Jeanie (Bruce) Pope, Racin, Wis., Martha (Harvey) Jenkins, Racin, Wis., numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.

    He was proceeded in death by parents and sisters Sylvia Kummer and Ruth (Kummer) Meyers.

    Bob was born October 7, 1925, in Charles City, the son of Leo and Minnie (Herzog) Smith. He attended and graduated from Charles City High School. Bob joined the U.S. Navy in October of 1943 and served in the South Pacific as a medic on the U.S.S. Hornet. He was honorably discharged in April of 1946. Bob married Austie Pelleymounter on December 28, 1946, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. They made their home in Osage where he worked as a salesman until he retired in 2005. Bob was a member of the Osage American Legion and Osage V.F.W. His passion was cars.

    Bob is survived by three daughters, Barb (Russ) Krahenbuhl of Osage, Nanci (David) Broome of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Pat (Tony) Halbach of Osage; two sons, Larry (Yvonne) Smith of Madison, Wisconsin, Tom Smith and Colette of Osage; nine grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jan Pull of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Sharon (Alan) Davidson of Charles City and special friend, Bernice Taglin of Charles City.

    Jan. 16, 1924 - July 13, 2013

    Al Morton, 89, of Webster City died Saturday, July 13, 2013, at the Van Diest Medical Center. Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Missionary Alliance Church in Blairsburg, with Rev. Ron Lotz officiating. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 633 of Williams. Visitation will be at the church from 3-5 p.m. prior to the memorial service.

    Alva Calvin Morton, son of Lawrence and Margurerite Vaughn Morton, was born Jan. 16, 1924, at Russell. He attended and Chariton high school. He joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theatre of Action from 1943-1946. On Nov. 17, 1946, he married Shirley Fay Clark at Hubbard. The couple resided at Buckeye, Dows and Stratford. He was working for Pierre Pounds Painting and was painting at the Webster City Police department when he was asked if he was interested in working for the police department. In 1960, the family moved to Webster City and he joined the Police Force.

    He also owned and operated the Morton Painting and Decorating Service. He always had one more job to complete. He remodeled a Farmall tractor and took grandchildren to many parades. The apartment he had lived in for 25 years was his domain where he baked and shared his cakes and did many errands for the widow ladies who live there.

    Al is survived by his wife, Shirley; sons and daughters, Sandra (Gordon) Ewing of Mason City; Melody (Larry) Olson of Clarion; Carol (Tim) McKinney of Webster City; Nick (Natalie) Morton of Wichita, Kan.; Pam (Paul) Vetter of Nashua; Matt (Tina) Morton of Carthage, Mo.; Steven Morton of Fort Dodge; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Diane (Darrell) January of Roundtree, Texas; several nieces and nephews; and long-time painting partner, Arnie Bechtel.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; two great-granddaughters; brothers and sisters, Lula; Everett; James; Beulah; Harvey; Ramona and Lawrence, Jr.

    Adeline (Addie) Matilda Chroup, 93 of Charles City, Iowa, passed away at 11th Street Chautauqua Guest House on July 19, 2013. Visitationwill be on Tuesday, July 22, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home 401 Blunt St. Charles City. A graveside service will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.     Adeline was born on Aug. 31, 1919, in Charles City. She is the daughter of Albert and Ida (Dumke) Venz. She attended rural school through eighth grade, then Colwell High School as a freshman, then transferred to Charles City High School were she graduated in 1938.

    Addie married Leon George Chroup in Fountain, Minnesota, on Oct. 20, 1940. They were blessed with almost 66 years together.

    In 1966 after being a full time mother and homemaker, she resumed outside work at Field Drug Store in Charles City. She later worked at Van Rees Music as a book keeper, continuing after the store became Keiser Music.

    Addie was a lifetime member of St. John Lutheran Church, a past member of Rebecca Circle, Tabitha Circle, Ladies Guild, and past leader of Luther League, PTA, Cub Scouts and Brownie Scouts. She also had taught Sunday school and Bible School and was a past treasurer of W.E.L.C.A. at St. John. In later years, Addie was a Charles City Women' Club member and served as both secretary and treasurer. She was a former member Pythian Sisters and received her past chief pin, for almost 20 years. Addie was a member of the Floyd County Medical Center Auxiliary serving as a Pink Lady.

    Being an avid writer to family and friends, Addie enjoyed sending cards and letters to many and usually had a pen in hand. She also enjoyed baking, cooking, sewing and tending to her flower garden. She would can vegetables from the garden Leon kept.

    Survivors include daughter Gloria Eagan, son-in-law Richard Eagan of Woodridge Ill., one grandson Brian Eagan, great- granddaughters Sophie and Holly of Oak Park, Ill., and their mother Ann Dvoretsky also of Oak Park, Ill. Also, are surviving many beloved nieces and nephews and their families.

    Adeline is preceded in death by her husband Leon, by the tragic death of their son Larry Leon, by her parents, two brothers, Merlin and Melvin Venz, and two sisters, Arlene Heise and Mildred Paine. Addie will be greatly missed by her loving family and many friends

    Bev was born on December 25, 1936, to Ray and Ruth (Sorenson) Eikenberry. She was born and raised in Charles City. She was married to Loren Mahnesmith on May 14, 1955. To this union five children were born. She spent her life working various jobs but most important to her was raising her children. She was a loving and devoted mother.

    She spent her later years traveling to Texas and Las Vegas and enjoying life. When she was not traveling you could find her teaching her grandchildren to play and jump in mud puddles or anything to get them dirty and make their parents cringe. She cherished every moment spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

    She will be remembered for her giving heart, sense of humor, quick wit and love for life. She touched many lives and will forever be loved and missed. She left all that knew her with many great stories to pass on.

    The family would like to extend a special thank you to the loving staff of 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Homes.

    Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Loren (Barb) Mahnesmith, Lynette (DuWayne) Paulsen, Randy (Michelle) Mahnesmith, Rob Mahnesmith, and Rick Mahnesmith; grandchildren, Mitch (Amber), Mindy (Shelby), Michelle (Kelly), Tonia (Matt Linde), Seth (Racheal), Lindsey, Shelby, Casandra, Bob, Melissa, Brittney, Jason, and Amber; 17 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ann and Betty (Cliff); brothers, Brad (Kathy), and Joe; and many other family and friends.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Ruth Caiharr and Ray and Harriet Eikenberry; daughter, Susan Heffron; brother, Frank Caiharr; and husband, Loren Mahnesmith.

    LeRoy Vance, 62, of Floyd, died Sunday, July 21, 2013, of a heartattack.

    LeRoy Patrick Vance was born Feb. 26, 1951, in Charles City, the son of Dale and Maxine (Mallery) Vance. LeRoy attended school in both Floyd and Charles City, graduating from Charles City High in 1969. He received a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business from Iowa State in 1976. On March 19, 1977, he was united in marriage to Jean Kaspar in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple made their home on the family farm near Floyd where they raised their two daughters, Danielle and Jane. LeRoy worked briefly in farm services in Alden and Charles City before returning to Floyd to work alongside his father and ?play farmer? for over 25 years. Recently, LeRoy retired from farming and began growing grapes and making wine.

    LeRoy was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the Iowa Wine Growers Association. Over the years, he also served on the boards of the Floyd County Farm Bureau, Floyd Dollars for Scholars and the Floyd County Quality Pork Producers. LeRoy was a friendly, loving man who spent much of his time helping his family and neighbors. LeRoy enjoyed history, listening to music, fishing and vacationing in Minnesota with his family, and traveling to visit his daughters as they moved around the country.

    Living family members include his wife of 36 years, Jean Vance of Floyd; his daughters Danielle Vance (Patrick McMullen) of Durham, N.C. and Jane Vance (Trevor Diehl) of Austin, Tex.; father Dale Vance of Charles City; six siblings, Elaine (Dennis) Harvey of Bel Aire, Kansas, Carolyn (Ron) Jensen of Cedar Falls, Jerry (Anna) Vance of Cedar Falls, Susan (George) Nixt of Clarksville, Sandy Vance of Charles City and Kris Harris of Springfield, Virginia; father-inlaw, William Kaspar of Papillion, Nebraska; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and many friends.

    He was preceded in death by his grandparents; mother, Maxine Vance; and mother-in-law, Clare Kaspar.

    Memorials will be donated to a scholarship fund in LeRoy's name.

    Ronald "Ron" Fiser, 62, of Charles City, died Thursday, July 25, 2013, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

    A funeral Mass for Ron Fiser will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

    Friends may call at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in the Social Hall from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday where there will be a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the church one hour prior to the service.

    Ronald "Ron" Burt Fiser was born September 12, 1950, in Charles City, the son of Lloyd and Patricia (Olson) Fiser. He received his education in Charles City, graduating from Charles City High School in 1968. He then attended Mankato State College where he was on the wrestling team and received a Bachelor's Degree in 1973. On January 3, 1970, Ron was united in marriage to Charlotte Kral. The couple made their home in Charles City where they raised their family.

    Ron was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. In 1973, Ron went to work for Oliver Corp. as a designer. When the plant closed he worked at Webster City Products, GMT Corp., and Winnebago Industries as a manufacturing engineer. He retired on February 28, 2013 from TDS Automation where he was employed as a Project Manager.

    Ron was the 9th grade wrestling coach for several years at Charles City High School and loved coaching and working with the boys' baseball and girls' softball teams. He had a special fondness for the Cougar traveling baseball team and was the President of the Charles City Boys' Little League for many years. Ron served as a member of the Park Board, was an avid golfer and bowler. He served as Secretary of the Charles City Men's Bowling Association and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010. Family was very important to Ron. He enjoyed traveling to watch his children and grandchildren participate in sports and other activities. Ron loved big family gatherings.

    Living family members include his wife of 43 years, Charlotte of Charles City; five children: Laura (Jerry) Mitchell of Charles City, Brian (Jackie) Fiser of Bondurant, Crystal (Andy) Swarbrick of Rosemount, Minn., Ryan (Holly) Fiser of Mason City and Ashley (Caleb) Gabel of Cedar Falls; 12 grandchildren: Tyler, Zach, Drew and Sarah Mitchell of Charles City; Chase, Connor and Coby Fiser of Bondurant; Dylan and Landon Swarbrick of Rosemount, Minn.; and Gwen, Avery and Miller Fiser of Mason City; sister, Linda (Gerald) Schmitt of Rockford; along with numerous aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins, other family members and friends.

    He was preceded in death by his parents.

    Lois Thoman, 89, of Charles City, died Thursday, July 25, 2013 at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

    A funeral Mass for Lois Thoman will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

    Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday where there will be a Scriptural Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the church one hour prior to the service.

    Lois Irene Wulff Thoman was born March 1, 1924, at Floyd, the daughter of Herman and Arvilla (Malstead) Wulff. She received her education from Floyd High School. On May 15, 1943, she was united in marriage to Howard Thoman in San Diego, Calif. The couple made their home in Charles City where Lois stayed at home raising their family. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where she could be found six days a week. She was also a member of St. Mary's Circle, VFW Auxiliary and Women of the Moose. Lois enjoyed dancing, playing cards, playing BINGO on Monday, getting her hair done on Friday and having coffee with the ladies during the week.

    Lois was known for her many years of volunteer work at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home and received the Giving Your Best Volunteer of the Month Award from KIMT. She was also proud of her picture hanging in the Floyd County Museum with her graduating class. Lois really loved spending time with her family.

    Living family members include her two sons: Larry (Karen Stultz) Thoman of Mabelvale, Ark. and Michael (Maggie) Thoman of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; five grandchildren: Deanna Morris (Mark Meyer), Darlene (Rich) Turpen, Jeff (Sheri) Thoman, Steve Thoman and Cynthia (Dave) VanCollie; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; along with many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

    She was preceded in death by her husband Howard of 54 years,; grandson, Charlie Thoman; great-granddaughter, Makinzey Nierling; three sisters: Iola Suess, Margaret Falls and Ruth Huxsol; and her parents.

    Gwendolyn Joanne Puhrmann Koehler was born November 13, 1930, in Charles City, the daughter of William J. and Fyrne (Hodgdon) Puhrmann. Gwen received her education in Charles City, graduating from Charles City High School in 1948.

    On March 11, 1950, she was united in marriage to Merlyn Koehler in Charles City. The couple made their home in rural Charles City where they raised their family and farmed side-by-side their entire married life. Gwen also worked as a secretary at various places in Charles City including Oliver Corp. for five years and the Floyd County Extension Service for three years. She was a member of West St. Charles United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and was the Sunday School Superintendent for several years. Gwen was active in the West St. Charles Homemakers, Friendly Birthday Club, 500 Card Club and the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed knitting and embroidery.

    Living family members include her two sons: Gary (Susan) Koehler of Rochester, Minn. and Wayne (Lisa) Koehler of Charles City; three grandsons: Michael of Mason City, Nicholas and Alex both of Charles City; along with nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Merlyn; and her brother, Bradley Puhrmann.

    Delbert Laudner & Mary Lou Laudner

    ROCKFORD, IOWA - A graveside service for Delbert and Mary Lou Laudner both of El Cajon, Calif., will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, July 29, 2013, at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

    Father Neil Manternach will officiate. There will be military honors.

    Mary Lou died on November 24, 2012, and her body was cremated. Delbert died on January 23, 2013, and his body also was cremated. Their remains will be buried together.

    Charles L. Wilson

    Nora Springs, Iowa - Charles L. Wilson, 79, Nora Springs, died Monday, July 29, 2013, at his home.

    Per Charles' wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and no services are planned.

    Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Charles Wilson Memorial Fund in care of his wife Bette, 1664 Echo Avenue, Nora Springs, Iowa.

    Charles L. Wilson, son of Roy and Mae (Gallup) Wilson was born June 22, 1934, on the home in Rockford Township, Iowa. As a young adult, Charles moved to Idaho where he met the love of his life, Betty Nice and they were united in marriage in Filer, Idaho, on September 10, 1952. To this union, they would be blessed with five children, Regina, Roy, Janice, Rex and Charles Jr.

    Charles was a laborer working in Idaho before moving back to Iowa in 1958. He began working at Decker and Sons Meat Packing Plant, later known as Armour for many years, before taking an early retirement at the age of 50. Charles and Bette made their home in Nora Springs in 1964 where they have lived for over 49 years.

    Charles was an avid fisherman and camper. He loved making casino runs when possible and helped Bette tend to their garden.

    He is survived by his wife, Bette Wilson, Nora Springs; children, Regina DeMaris, Mason City, Roy (Lorie) Wilson, Rockford, and Janice (Kevin) Hochstein, Mason City; grandchildren, Robbie (Merideth) DeMaris, Nora Springs, Jamie (Bobbi) DeMaris, Mason City, Kellie DeMaris, Mason City, Shawn (Amber) Wilson, Mason City, Brandy (Terry) Woods, St. Ansgar, Iowa, Mindy Prazak, Mason City, Jeremiah (Krista) Prazak, Mason City and Daniel (Erin) Prazak, Gilbert, Minn.; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, brothers, Larry (Norma) Wilson, Idaho, Don (Mary) Wilson, Rockwell, Paul (Sharon) Wilson, Crescent, Iowa, and his sisters, Marilyn Ingersoll, Mason City and Janice Sheldon, Clear Lake along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    A graveside service for Carla Kirkham will be held Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

    The family invites friends to a casual-dress celebration of her life and of her birthday, taking place at The Pub On The Cedar following the brief graveside service.
