Wesley Chambers, 90
U.S. Navy   WWII

Wesley Chambers, 90, of Charles City, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at Colonial Manor in Elma.

Funeral services for Wesley Chambers will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hauser Funeral Home.

Pastor Jason Boyd of Faith Bible Chapel will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday an hour prior to the service.

Wesley Glenn Chambers was born Oct. 3, 1921, in Floyd County, the son of Clayton and Nellie (Hildebrand) Chambers. He attended school north of Colwell. Wesley farmed with his father until enlisting in the United States Navy on Dec. 7, 1942. After his discharge he worked for a brief time at Oliver Corporation. On Nov. 2, 1946, he was united in marriage to Zella Betty Wood at Marble Rock. They farmed south of New Haven from 1947 to 1949 when they moved to a farm southeast of Colwell. In 1974 they purchased the Colwell Bar and ran it for several years. Wesley enjoyed agriculture and was a farmer at heart. He was a member of the V.F.W. and served on the board of directors of the Colwell Co-op for a brief time.

Living family members include three children: Leo (Denise) Chambers of Lakeville, Minn, Donald (Janet) Chambers, of Ionia and Dennis (Lishia) Chambers, of Alta Vista; eight grandchildren, Megan Chambers, David (Carena) Chambers, Laura Chambers, Andrew Chambers, Amy (Luis) Santiago, Michelle (Mark) Kirsch, Heather (Lyle) Staudenmaier and Brandon Wyckoff; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Lewis (Margaret) Chambers, of Marble Rock; and two sisters, Dorothy Bill, of Riceville, and Marion Meek, of Rochester, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 47 years, Zella in 1994; a daughter, Cindy Pitz; three brothers, John, Roy and Clayton Chambers; and two sisters, Edith Bill and Edna Ferch.

Kenneth Dean Schmarzo, 83
U.S. Army   Korean Conflict

Kenneth Dean Schmarzo, 83, of Charles City, died at his home on Aug. 6, 2012. Graveside services for Kenneth (Ken) will be held Sept. 8, at 3 p.m., at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. American Legion Post #278 of Osage will conduct military rites.

Ken was born Oct. 11, 1928, in Osage, to August and Josephine Schmarzo. He graduated from Little Cedar High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After Ken’s service to his country, he returned to Osage where he was employed as a typesetter for the Mitchell County Press. Ken was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.

On Aug. 6, 1965, Ken married Dorie Marcks Ruechel in Charles City, where they made their home with son, William (Bill). Ken was a devoted father to Bill and cherished their relationship.

Ken was a long-suffering Cubs fan who recently shared his allegiance with the Baltimore Orioles when grandson, Alexander, was drafted by the Orioles. Ken had a breadth of knowledge about many subjects and could engage others in conversation with facts, opinions and humor. Ken enjoyed reading and studying finance and the stock market. He was a quiet, unassuming man who appreciated the love and loyalty of neighbors, friends and family.

Ken was preceded in death by parents August and Josephine Schmarzo; his wife, Dorie Schmarzo; great-grandson, Ethan Holst; brother-in-law, Jim Hanna; aunts and uncles.

Ken is survived by his son Bill (Carolyn) Schmarzo, of Palo Alto, Calif.; step-daughter Suzette (Alan) Blakestad, of Avoca; step-son Allen (Jenny) Ruechel, of Clearwater, Fla.; a brother, Gordon (Donna) Schmarzo, of Manning; nine grandchildren: Alexander Schmarzo, Max Schmarzo, Amelia Schmarzo, Ryan Blakestad, Amanda Holst, Summer Jensen, Chad Ruechel, Justin Ruechel and Caitlin Jones; as well as nine great-grandchildren.

Ken’s family is grateful to Karen Thomas and Jeanette Anderson for their loving care and friendship, as well as to neighbors and other community members whose friendship he appreciated. Joan Feller Weighner, 81

Joan Feller Weighner, 81, of Waukon, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2012, at home in Waukon. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m.

Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there will be a 4:00 pm scripture service and a 5 p.m. American Legion Auxiliary memorial service.

Joan Catherine Feller Weighner was born Dec. 5, 1930, in Chicago, Ill., to Edward F. and Gwendolyn Catherine (Coy) Kennedy. The family moved to Sibley in 1935 and Edward began his law practice there. Joan attended the Sibley Public Schools and graduated from Sibley High School in 1948. She attended Briar Cliff College and St. Joseph’s Mercy College of Nursing, graduating in 1951, and after passing her state boards became a registered nurse. On Feb. 16, 1952, she married Henry Feller at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Sibley. Henry and Joan lived in Sioux City, and Norfolk, Neb., before moving to Waukon in 1960. They had six children. Henry died June 30, 1982, from complications of heart disease. Joan married Phil Weighner on Jan. 25, 1991, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Waukon.

Joan worked occasionally as a staff nurse at Veterans Memorial Hospital and the Good Samaritan Center, both in Waukon. She taught nurse-aide courses in Waukon for many years. In 1970, Joan organized, developed and directed the Allamakee County Homemaker Health Aide Agency, now known as the Veterans Memorial Hospital Community and Home Care. After retiring from the nursing profession, Joan taught piano lessons in her home for several years.

Joan was a member of the Makee Manor Board, Veterans Memorial Hospital Community and Home Care Advisory Board, American Legion Auxiliary, and chairman of the Resident Advocate Committee of Good Samaritan Center. She belonged to St. Patrick Catholic Church where she was a member of the adult choir for many years. Joan enjoyed reading, dancing, golf, playing cards, playing the piano, cooking and baking. She especially enjoyed visiting with a wide variety of people. Joan and Phil enjoyed several winters in Texas and thoroughly enjoyed a trip together to Ireland. Joan loved her family dearly and thought the world of her husbands, parents, brothers and sisters, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as well as her step-children and their families. She believed very strongly in the precious gift of life as did both of her husbands, and belonged to Iowans For Life and the Allamakee Chapter when it was active.

Joan was preceded in death by her husbands, Henry Feller and Phil Weighner; her parents, Gwen and Ed Kennedy; a brother, Tom Kennedy; and a step-granddaughter, Katie Weighner.

Survivors include three sons: Joe (Jane) Feller of Sibley, Bill (Peggy) Feller, of Charles City, and Tom (Sarah) Feller, of Robins; three daughters: Sue (Gene) Roy of Lafayette, La., Patty (George) Anderson, of Alburnett, and Peggy (Terry) Wertz, of Williamsburg; 27 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Peggy (Jerry) Price, of Rochester, Minn., and Kate Billings, of Brandon, Fla.; four brothers: Frank (Jean) Kennedy and Patrick Kennedy, both of Arnolds Park, Joseph (Monika) Kennedy, of Concord, Mass., and Richard (Norine) Kennedy, of West Des Moines; a sister-in-law, Kay Kennedy, of Glendale, Calif.; her step-children: Mary Mike (Bob) Schell, of Champaign, Ill., Dr. Phil (Cathy) Weighner, of Grand Rapids, Mich., Laurie (Dave) Martin and Barb (Rod) Smed, all of Waukon, Tom (Angie) Weighner, of Dorchester, Paul Weighner, of Lansing, Brigid (Ron) Cota and Steve (Brooke) Weighner, both of Harpers Ferry, Fr. Robert Weighner, of Kenosha, Wis., Fr. James Weighner, of Prairie du Chien, Wis., Mark (Laurel) Weighner, of Greeley, Colo., Mollie (Monte) Marti, of Mt. Vernon, and Cathy (Scot) DeValk, of Solon; 33 step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

E. Lucille Smith, 88

NASHUA — E. Lucille Smith, 88, of Nashua, died Saturday morning, Sept. 1, 2012, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Congregational United Church of Christ, Nashua, with Rev. James Mann and Ben Sholl presiding. Interment will be in Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield with Chad Smith, Casey Smith, Sara Shaw, Matt Hasenwinkel, Megan Hasenwinkel, Brooke Jones, Kelly Crouch, Shane Link, Cade Demro and Cole Demro serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Scot Demro and Alan Haskenwinkel. Military honors will be conducted by the Nashua V.F.W. Post.

Lucille Smith was born Nov. 24, 1923, in Minburn, the daughter of Guy and Bertha (Smith) Nourse. She received her education near Minburn and was a graduate of the Washington Township High School in 1941. After high school, Lucille worked for a brief period at a munitions factory in Ankeny. On Nov. 25, 1943, she enlisted into the United States Marine Corps. She served during World War II and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant on Jan, 24, 1946.

Following her service to her country, she began working for a real estate office in Kansas City, Mo. Lucille met Mark L. Smith after the war while they were working and going to school in Kansas City. The couple were married on Nov. 30, 1947, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. To this union three children were born. The couple lived in Waverly for a short time before moving to Nashua in 1949. She and her husband were co-owners of Smith Jewelry in Nashua and Smith Jewelers in Charles City for many years. Lucille enjoyed playing cards, golf, her church group, the Majels and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Women’s Club.

Survivors include her husband, Mark; two daughters, Nancy (Alan) Hasenwinkel, of Cedar Falls, and Shirley (Scot) Demro, of Nashua; 10 grandchildren: Chad (Shayna) Smith, of Clive, Sara (Adam Streigel), of Windsor Heights, Casey (Eric Burmeister) Smith, of Des Moines, Matt Hasenwinkel, of Des Moines, Megan (Mike) Hasenwinkel, of Eagan, Minn., Brooke (Rhys) Jones, of Woodinville, Wash., Kelly (Chris) Crouch, of Davenport, Shane (Lischia) Link, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Cade Demro and Cole Demro, both of Nashua; as well as 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Gary Smith; one sister, Dorothy Brooks; two brothers, Verne Nourse and Russell Nourse.


Laura Jean (Morrison) Hoyt, 90

Laura Jean (Morrison) Hoyt, 90, of Torrence Calif., and formerly of Charles City, passed away in Torrence on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, while under Hospice Care.

She was born Sept. 10, 1921, in Charles City, to Wayne and Amy (Ullom) Morrison. She attended Charles City Schools, moved to California and met Clarence Hoyt, whom she later married and spent the rest of her life there.

Funeral services were held in California on Aug. 30, with a nephew, Dick (Kay) Deist, of Charles City, as a pallbear.

She is survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

She’ll be remembered for her great humor and being an excellent steamstress.

Laura was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a sister, Eleanor Deist; a brother, Howard Morrison; and a niece, Kathy Swinbank.

Beverly M. Deleeuw, 73

Beverly M. Deleeuw, 73, of 3056 Highway 18, Charles City died Sept. 9, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City surrounded by her loved ones.

Beverly was born on Feb. 12, 1939, in Charles City, Iowa to John and Harriet (Sisson) Mead. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1957. She then moved to Colorado to attend Airline School for teletyping. Upon graduation she then moved to Grand Rapids, Mich. where she met and married Leonard Deleeuw on May 25, 1959. They then moved back to Charles City where she was employed at Oliver White Farm as a data processor. She continued working at Oliver White Farm until retiring in 1990. Other jobs she held included work at the Appliance Center, working on the road as a flagger, working at Blongs Custom Wood Products and for the Census Bureau.

Beverly loved to paint ceramics and became known as the “Unicorn Lady” with her many ceramics of unicorns. She loved sharing her ceramics with friends and even started her own ceramic business. She was a loving wife to husband Leonard and daughter Denise and always enjoyed having her family around her as much as possible. She loved living on the farm with all the animals especially the horses, cats and dogs.

Beverly is survived by her husband Leonard, daughter Denise (Tony) Deleeuw; grandchildren: Beau (Kristin) Deleeuw and Nathan Deleeuw; along with many nieces, nephews and beloved friends.

Beverly was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Richard and Ronald Mead.

Laura M. Ortman, 91

Laura M. Ortman, 91, formerly of Charles City died July 30, 2012, in Denver, Colo.

Graveside services will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City, at 1 p.m. Saturday Oct. 6, 2012. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. There will be a victory celebration at the home of Kim and Kalen Schlader, 2986 Chestnut Place, Charles City following the graveside services. Ortman was born in Geneva, Iowa on Dec. 21, 1920, to Clifford and Lida (Weiner) Maulsby. She grew up in Charles City and graduated from Charles City High School in 1938. She later graduated from the La James Beauty College in Mason City. She married Robert Ortman on Oct. 11, 1941 in Charles City. In 1953 they moved to Decatur, Ga. where she was employed for many years by the DeKalb County Department of Human Services. The family returned to Charles City in 1988. She moved to Colorado following the death of her husband in 2002.

Laura was a longtime member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. She volunteered in a number of capacities thru the years including Pink Lady and the F.C.M.H. auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing clothes and making flower girl dresses for many. She also enjoyed reading with mysteries, historical writings and novels among her favorites.

Laura is survived by her children Kay (Terry) Lutts, of Denver, Colo., and Kent (Rada) Ortman of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; Grandchildren: Laura Lee Ault and Ashley Lutts of Denver, Colo., Judi Locke and Robert Ortman, of Jonesboro, Ark.; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Lucille McKenzie, Ann Britt, and Pearl Fredericks and brother Clifford Maulsby.

Di Onna “Dee” Jean Ellery, 72

Di Onna “Dee” Jean Ellery, 72, of Ephrata, Wash. and formerly of Charles City; passed away Saturday evening on Aug. 25, 2012, with family by her side.

She is survived by her children: son Jeffrey A. Tumilson, of Payson, Ariz.; daughter Da Wona D. Tumilson, of Wenatchee, Wash.; sister Jerri Kay (Doug) Nelson, of Charles City; three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents LR “Budd” and D. Jean Ellery and a brother Gary L. “Skip” Ellery.

Mildred Elfers, 86

Mildred Elfers, 86, of Rockford, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Per her wishes, Mildred is being cremated and a private family graveside service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd.

Share your thoughts and memories of Mildred on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at the Floyd Grace United Methodist Church Educational Building.

Mildred Carrie Wefel Elfers was born July 1, 1926, in Butler County, the daughter of William and Bertha (Buchholz) Wefel. She received her education from rural Butler County schools. On March 30, 1947, she was united in marriage to Carl Elfers at Clarksville. They farmed near Floyd until 1976. Mildred also worked at Trowbridges, Red Owl and Cerro Gordo County Home Health Care. She was a member of First United Methodist Church at Rockford, Floyd County Extension Council and had served as a 4-H leader. Mildred enjoyed gardening, cooking and playing with the same card club for 50 years. Family was very important to Mildred, and she looked forward to sharing her life with them especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Living family members include two children, Fran DeGroote, of Rockford, and Lynn (Jane) Elfers, of Charles City; six grandchildren, Jamie (Andy) McCright, Laura Elfers, Jason DeGroote, Lisa (Nick) Peterson, Jessica (Andy) Dow and Carrie Elfers; six great-grandchildren, Clara, Catherine and Lucas Dow, Michael and Aaron McCright, Jena and sister soon-to-arrive, Ava; and two sisters-in-law, Fannie Wefel, of Clarksville, and Ruby (Virgil) Munsell, of Rockford; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Carl on June 15, 2010; a great-granddaughter, Marissa McCright; four brothers: Glen, Roy, Lawrence and Vernon Wefel; and three sisters: Lucille Witt, Viola Garbes, Malita Jacobs.

Lorraine Bigelow, 70

Lorraine Bigelow, 70, of Charles City, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at her home.

Funeral services for Lorraine Bigelow will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hauser Funeral Home. Chaplain Janet Dorenkamp will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Lorraine Kathryn Springer Bigelow was born Sept. 29, 1941, near Bassett, the daughter of Amos and Helen (Marovets) Springer. She graduated from Nashua High School in 1959. On May 22, 1963, she was united in marriage to Ralph Bigelow at Waverly. After their children were raised Lorraine did private homecare in Charles City. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, fishing, garage saling, wintering in Texas with Ralph and attending various music festivals. Her greatest joy, however, was to spend time with her family and share her life with them.

Living family members include her husband, Ralph Bigelow, of Charles City; four children, Cheryl (Wesley) Boman, of Klemme, Brenda (Jim) Clark, of Waterloo, Becky (Craig) Dana, of Altoona and Kelli (Jim) Ellingson, of Altoona; two stepsons, Douglas (Denise) Bigelow, of Peoria, Ill., and Dennis (Carla) Bigelow, of Coralville; three sisters, Dorothy (Henry) Mohring, of Ionia, Madonna (Ervin) Mohring, of Charles City, and Beverly (Dave) Bray, of West Des Moines; 12 grandchilden, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Gordon Springer; and two sisters, Doris Martin and Darlene Martens.

Roger Brown, 79
U.S. Army   Korean Conflict

Roger Brown, 79, of Waterloo, formerly of Nashua, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012 at Manor Care in Waterloo.

At his request there will be no services. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Roger George Brown was born May 24, 1933, in Floyd County, the son of George and Hazel (Johnson) Brown. He graduated from Nashua High School in 1952. Roger served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Roger lately worked for the Waterloo Courier and Dohren Flowers enjoying his delivery routes throughout Iowa. His hobbies revolved around the racing community. Between 1977 and the early 1980’s he dedicated his time to volunteering for Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring nine different boys. Living family members include a niece, Lori Elledge of Elk Run Heights; a nephew Lary Elledge; and his “adopted son” John Taggs of Harlan; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Lola Elledge.

Oscar Graydon ‘Hunk’Anderson, 90, of Greene passed away on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor John Hanna officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by Tack- Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Billie L. Lint, Sr., 77

Billie L. Lint, Sr., 77, of Mt. Auburn, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton.

Funeral services will be held 11a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home with Pastor Dale Lint officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Dunkard Cemetery, Toddville.

Billie was a school bus driver from 1995 until 2011, driving for Alburnett, Charles City and Vinton- Shellsburg schools.

Billie is survived by three sons: Billie Lint, Jr., of Cedar Rapids, James Lint, of Mt. Auburn, and Joseph (Gail) Ruzicka, of Waterloo; two daughters: Jamie Pierson, of Cedar Rapids, and Klancy (Rod) Reid, of Shellsburg; two brothers: John (Judy) Lint, of Pella, and Dale (Bobby) Lint, of George, IA; brother-in-law John (Mary Ann) Osborn of Greene; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Henry Mohring

Henry Mohring, 89, of Ionia, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral services for Henry Mohring will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Burial will be in the New Hampton City Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Henry Paul Mohring was born March 3, 1923, in rural Chickasaw County, the son of Christian and Ida (Venz) Mohring. He received his education from rural Chickasaw County schools. On April 22, 1954, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Springer at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Henry worked for a brief time for the railroad, and then farmed the rest of his life near Ionia. He was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. His interests included fishing, hunting, playing cards and going to auctions.

Henry always looked forward to sharing his life with his Family. Living family members include his wife, Dorothy Mohring of Ionia; three children, Roger (Deb) Mohring, of New Hampton, Carolyn (Kenny) Amdahl, of Hubert, N.C., and Jolene (Frank) Wilts, of Charles City; six grandchildren, Nicole Mohring, Steven Amdahl, Bradley (Courtney) Amdahl, and Mckinna, Bailee and Abbie Wilts; three great-grandchildren, Landon Pate and Leah and Carter Amdahl. Preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Arnold Mohring, Fred Mohring; and two sisters, Ida Graham and Elma Zubrod.

Daniel ‘Dan’ D. Bennett

Daniel “Dan” D. Bennett, 58, died peacefully in his home at Bardstown, Ky., on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012.

Funeral services for Dan Bennett will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Kent Sovine of Bethany Alliance Church will officiate. Burial will be in Howardville Cemetery rural Charles City.

The family will greet friends an hour prior to the service.

Dan was born Aug. 26, 1954, in Fort Hood, Texas, to Dewey and Mary Ann (Temple) Bennett. He attended schools in Iowa and Kentucky, graduating from Washington County High School, Springfield, Ky., in 1971. Dan received his Bachelors degree in Journalism from Eastern Kentucky University. Dan was former director of the Bardstown Nelson County Tourism and Convention Commission, the owner of Bardstown Trolley and Transit where he operated the Heaven Hill Distilleries Trolley from its inception until 2010. His past career included roles in Kentucky state government in tourism and economic development. He was instrumental in the selection of the image of Federal Hill at Old Kentucky Home State Park for use on the 2001 Kentucky quarter. Dan was a former Editor of the Richmond Register and he was also the co-founder and publisher of The Bardstonian, a magazine devoted to life in Bardstown that was published from 2007-10.

He is survived by his faithful dog, Tuxedo; his mother, Mary Ann Stiles; and a sister, Darla (Ken) Henely, both of Charles City; a brother, David Bennett, of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a step-sister, Sandy (Garnett) Begley, of Kankakee, Ill.; a niece; three nephews and their families; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and scores of dear friends in Bardstown, Ky.

Dan was preceded in death by his father, Dewey Bennett; stepfather, J. W. Stiles; and stepbrother, William Stiles.

Cleola Morgan, 94

Cleola Morgan, 94, of Charles City, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral Services for Cleola Morgan will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, at the United Church of Christ in Colwell. Pastor Debra Lincoln will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Cleola Emily Chapin Morgan was born April 11, 1918, on the Chapin Farm in rural Floyd County, the daughter of Frank E. and Flavia (Cagley) Chapin. She attended country school and graduated from Colwell High School in 1936. On Oct. 7, 1938, she was united in marriage to William Morgan in Charles City. She spent most of her married life on the farm where she grew up, moving to Charles City in 1993. She was a member of Colwell United Church of Christ for all her life, and served as pianist, Sunday School Treasurer, and active in Women’s Fellowship. She enjoyed sewing, was an avid reader and letter writer, and often wrote poetry, as well as having a flower garden as she loved flowers. She is survived by three children, Roger (Bonnie) Morgan, of Charles City, Ellen Baker, of Charles City, and Bonnie (David) Elliott, of Nokesville, Va.; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William on Sept. 2, 1996; a step-grandson, Dale Whitmarsh; a great-great-granddaughter, Morgan Emily Parker; and a brother, Jim Chapin.

Lorraine Florence Gabe, 92

CLEMSON, S.C. – Lorraine Florence Gabe, 92, wife of the late Leo Gabe, of 150 Downs Blvd. Apt. D-213, Clemson, S.C., passed away on Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at her residence.

A native of Perham, Minn., Mrs. Gabe was the daughter of the late Arthur George and Adeline Jacobs Schuett. She was a homemaker and a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Charles City, Iowa.

Mrs. Gabe is survived by two sons, Larry Gabe (Jane), of Salem, S.C., and Lynn Gabe (Margaret), of Pine Top, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Charles City, Iowa. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St., Charles City, IA 50616.
