Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Dawson

 

Elizabeth “Liz” Dawson, 64, of Charles City, died Thursday, June 28, 2012, at her home surrounded by her family after a valiant battle with cancer.

Funeral services for Liz Dawson will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the First Congregational Church. Pastor Forrest Cornelius will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Elizabeth Grace Stalker Dawson was born June 24, 1948, in Charles City, the daughter of Lyle and Maxine (Goebel) Stalker. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1966 and LaJames School of Beauty in 1967. On Feb. 15, 1969, she was united in marriage to Richard Dawson. Liz worked all her life as a cosmetologist in Charles City. She was a member of the First Congregational Church and Iowa Cosmetology Association. Her interests included camping, cooking, traveling, going to the casino and entertaining. Liz always looked forward to sharing her life with her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be remembered as a loving, caring person who was always willing to help others.

Living family members include her husband, Richard Dawson of Charles City; two children, Kelly (Randy) Linderman of Mason City and Chad (Anna) Dawson of Grimes; six grandchildren: Logan, Lucas and Trey Linderman and Torrance, Mackenzie and Cooper Dawson; a sister, Phyllis Kelly of Charles City; a brother, Rodney (Pat) Stalker of Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and several aunts and uncles.

Paul Parks, 72

OSAGE — Paul Parks, 72, of Osage and formerly of Charles City, died Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 7, at the home of Adam and Shelley Parks, 1783 395th St., St. Ansgar, with Pastor Chip Uhrmacher officiating.

Paul was born Sept. 4, 1939, at Home Creek, Va., the son of Sam and Mae (Conely) Parks. He was raised in Virginia. Paul worked in various construction fields throughout his life. He married Janice Baldwin on Nov. 25, 1980. From this union Adam and Janice were born. Paul moved to Charles City in 1990. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, spending time with family and loved his dogs.

Paul is survived by his son, Adam (Shelley) Parks of St. Ansgar and daughter, Kayelea; his daughter, Janice (Charles Fisher) Parks of Charles City and son, Kason and daughter, Kambrya; and a brother, Danny (Emily) Parks of Augusta, Ga.

Darwin Walker, 81,

Darwin Walker, 81, of Charles City, died Friday, June 29, 2012, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Funeral services for Darwin Walker will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethany Alliance Church. Pastor Kent Sovine will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Darwin Paul Walker was born April 21, 1931, at Waterloo, the son of John and Alta (Shipp) Walker. He received his education from East High School in Waterloo. Darwin proudly served in the United States Army. While stationed in Germany he met his future brideMarianne Cavet. On June 15, 1953, they were united in marriage at Berlin, Germany. Darwin worked at Warren Transport for several years and in 1991 retired from John Deere. In 2009 Darwin and Marianne moved to Charles City. He was a member of the UAW, American Legion and was active for many years in the scouting program. His interests included camping, golfing, fishing, woodworking and tinkering in his garage. Darwin always took special interest in his family, especially his grandchildren and their activities.

Living family members include his wife, Marianne Walker of Charles City; three children: Randall (Tracy) Walker of Aiken, S.C., Kim (Mike) Wendel of Charles City and John (Nadine) Walker of Des Moines; 12 grandchildren: Joanne (Justin) Watt, Melissa (David) Battiste, Kelli (Samuel) Walker, Chad (Danielle) Wendel, Cory (Lucy Fitzgerald) Wendel, Alex Wendel, Cady Wendel, Kylie Walker, Kaitlyn Walker, Nicholas Walker, Kara Walker and Michele (Bryant) Wetzel; two great-grandchildren, Cole Wetzel and Cameron Wetzel; a brother, Roger (Marilyn) Walker of Dewey, Ariz.; and a sister-in-law, Carol Walker of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Dwight Walker.

Gene Hansen, 63

Gene Hansen, 63, of 2166 Old Highway Road, Charles City, died June 29, 2012, at Floyd County Medical Center.

He had been battling ALS for 14 months.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Monday, July 2, at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, with a one-hour prior visitation. Gene Allen Hansen was born on Aug. 17, 1948, to Lawrence and Lucille (VanDanAcker) in Cresco. He lived and attended school in Cresco during adolescence. On Dec. 28, 1968, Gene married his wife Pam in Decorah. Soon after they were married, Gene and Pam moved to Charles City, where they raised their two children Michael and Nicole.

Gene spent most of his life as a Welder. He worked for L & J Welding and Salisbury Laboratories. He also owned his own welding shop in Greene, called G & P Welding. Gene loved welding and woodworking. He was a handyman. Recently Gene was working for the Parks and Rec in Charles City. Gene was a workaholic, but because of his illness he could no longer go to work.

Gene was also a jokester. He always told jokes and liked playing jokes on other people. Although he liked playing jokes, he was also the type of person that would help anyone. He taught his oldest grandson Justin how to drive and weld. When Gene wasn’t working, he liked going camping with his family in Wabasha, Minn., and Decorah. He also liked riding the lawn mower, snow plowing and decorating outside during Christmas time. Gene enjoyed the outdoors. He went to many of his grandson Bryce’s baseball games. On the weekends Gene and Pam would have coffee with his sister and brotherin- law. Gene loved coffee. Indoors Gene liked watching Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and Two and a Half Men.

Gene will be missed dearly by all of those who shared in his life. He will also be remembered for his comical personality. Whenever the song, “Red Solo Cup,” is played, his friends and family will laugh and think of him.

The family of Gene Hansen would like to extend their thanks to Hospice of North-Iowa and the ALS Association.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife for 44 years, Pam, of Charles City; a son, Michael (Steph) Hansen of Evansville, Ind.; daughter, Nicole (Craig) Hamm of Charles City; sister, Dianne (Ron) Linderman of Charles City; grandchildren: Justin, Seth, Zoe, Ryan Hansen and Bryce Hamm; and a great-grandchild, Kylie Hansen.

His parents preceded him in death.

Hazel J. Molitor, 80

TRACY, Minn. — Hazel J. Molitor, 80, of Marshall, Minn., died Monday, June 18, 2012, at the Prairie Home Hospice House in Marshall, Minn.

Funeral services were held June 21 at the First Baptist Church in Marshall. Interment took place at Tracy City Cemetery in Tracy.

Hazel June (Van Klei) Molitor was born July 16, 1931 to William A. and Frances V. (Johnson) Van Klei in rural Chandler, Murray County, Minn.

She married Calvin Jokstad on Sept. 15, 1948, and they had three sons: Carlyle, Carlton and Carl.

On Nov. 29, 1968, Hazel married C. J. “Cy” Molitor in Honolulu, Hawaii, and they had two daughters, Kimberlee and Kellee. Hazel was a very loving, caring and protective mother and housewife. Her children, including her step-sons, were all very dear to her. She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when she was approximately 45 years old, which did not seem to slow her down at first, but did in later years.

She was a devout Christian and one of her joys was hearing the many different ministers on television. If you were to come and visit her almost any time of the day she would have a Christian Program on. She also loved to watch birds in her backyard, and had many feeders there for them.

Hazel became a resident of the Prairie View Healthcare Center for a short time before moving into the Prairie Home Hospice House in Marshall.

Hazel is survived by her husband, Cy Molitor of Lynd, Minn.; two sons, Cartlton (Cheryl) and Carl Jokstad of Tracy, Minn.; two daughters, Kimberlee (Jason) Winters, of Mason City, and Kellee (Michael) Vivens, of San Antonio, Texas; two grandchildren: Trevon and Mikayla Vivens; three step-sons: Steven, of Camano Island, Wash., Rance (Sonia), of El Paso, Texas, and Ronald Molitor, of Camano Island, Wash.; one sister, Jean Waage, of Marshall, Minn.; one brother, Pete Van Klei, of Friendship, Wisc.; nieces, nephews and friends.

Her son, Carlyle; her parents; her in-laws; two sisters, Mathilda Kubica and Zelma Benson; two brothers, Arie “Ike” and John “Jack” Van Klei; a brother-in-law, Gaylen Benson; a half-sister, Georgia Hein; and a half-brother, Arie Van Klei, all preceded her in death.

GREENE — Funeral services for Daniel Miller, of Greene, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 6, 2012, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

Daniel Miller was born in Dumont on June 1, 1918, the son of Henry H. and Hattie C. (Gruis) Miller and passed away July 2, 2012, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

Tracy Lynn Boehmer, 50

Tracy Lynn Boehmer, 50, formerly of Charles City, died June 16, 2012, in Arizona.

Memorial services were held Friday, June 29, at Legacy Funeral Home in Peoria, Ariz., with a memorial luncheon held in Glendale, Ariz.

Tracy was born May 31, 1962, in Charles City, the son of Tim and Linda Boehmer. Living family members include his parents; a brother, Thomas (Tina) Boehmer; his children: Jesse and Jerimiah Boehmer, Tabetha Smith and Joshua Tucker; stepchildren: Jerad and Jerimiah Martin, and Cheraya Martin; grandchildren: Jacob, Landon and Kieran Boehmer, Kelsi and Riley Smith, Peyton and Aubry Boehmer, and Madisen, Jeran and Vhaya Martin; along with nieces Carestina Beckers and Shauna Boehmer.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Pastor Roger Hoppenworth, 76

Pastor Roger Hoppenworth, 76, of Charles City, died Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at Muse Norris Hospice, Mason City.

Funeral services for Roger Hoppenworth will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 16, at Messiah Lutheran Church, Charles City, with Pastor Jane Keel officiating. Burial will be in the St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery (Buck Creek), rural Sumner.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Roger William Hoppenworth was born Sept. 29, 1935, the son of Ted and Lauretta (Knoploh) Hoppenworth in rural Bremer County. Roger was baptized Oct. 13, 1935, and confirmed April 10, 1949, at St. John’s Lutheran Church (Buck Creek), rural Sumner. He graduated from Sumner High School in 1953. He graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly in 1957, and Wartburg Theological Seminary in 1961. Roger was ordained a Lutheran minister at his home congregation in June of 1961. Roger served four parishes during his ministry; St. John’s Church in Olin, St. Paul and Lake Churches in Renwick, Elvira Zion Church in rural Clinton and Rock Creek Church in rural Osage.

Roger was united in marriage to Jane Hoth on June 1, 1958. There was great joy in the birth of their four children. His hobbies included fishing at Lake Hattie, Minn., weekly bowling, gardening, planting trees, bike riding, and cheering for his Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs.

Those thankful in sharing Roger’s life include his wife of 54 years, Jane; four children: Ruth (Jim) Dunn of Decatur, Ind., Paul (Melanie) Hoppenworth of Rochester, Minn., Becky (Val) Thompson of Knoxville, and Joel (Liz) Hoppenworth of DeKalb, Ill.; 11 grandchildren: Matt (Christy) Dunn, Jessica Dunn, Ashton Hoppenworth, Ethan Hoppenworth, Samantha Thompson, Luke Hoppenworth, Mark Hoppenworth, Josephine Hoppenworth, Paul Hoppenworth, Peter Hoppenworth, and Gillian Hoppenworth; one great granddaughter, Olivia Dunn; one step-granddaughter, Nicole (Thompson) Knowles; two sisters, Ramona (Bob) Lehman of Lebanon, Mo., and Janet (Gene) Lindaman of Westbrook, Minn.; one brother, Jim (Pat) Hoppenworth of Polk City; an aunt; two uncles; six nieces; two nephews; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two nephews, Bobby Lehman and Terry Lehman; his parents-in-law, Floyd and Hilda Hoth.

Gayle G. Green, 78
U.S. Navy (1952-1956)

Gayle G. Green, 78 of 611 Freeman St., Charles City, died, July 12, 2012 at the Floyd Count Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, at First Baptist Church, 105 Chapel Lane, Charles City. Officiating will be the Rev.

Ruth Yeaton. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Friday at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home 401 Blunt St., Charles City and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City where Military honors will be presented by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit. Gayle G. Green was born on Nov. 9, 1933 in Charles City, to Clifford and Belva (Monroe) Green. He attended McKinley Elementary School and graduated from Charles City High School in 1952. He attended UNI to play football after graduation but suffered an injury that first fall to end his football career. He then worked at Salisbury Lab for a time before enlisting in the Navy where he served his country proudly from late 1952 to 1956. Upon his return to Charles City he worked for Salisbury Lab for 39 years, actively playing many years for the Salisbury Laboratories fast pitch softball team before retiring in 1995.

At the age of 15, Gayle was introduced and played with an upcoming country legend, Dave Dudley. This started his love for the guitar in which he learned to play by ear. During high school and later on he was known to many for his accomplishments in such sports as football, basketball, baseball and track. He also was a talented singer on the Boys Glee Club.

After his time in the Navy, he married and became the proud father of his four children. He taught them the many sports he enjoyed while teaching, coaching and officiating the games through the years. He enjoyed traveling with his family and kept the kids entertained wherever they went in the U.S. and Canada with his singing and playing the guitar. To his kids and the Charles City community he became known as the Candy Man as he always had candy for everyone as he delivered groceries and pharmaceuticals to many, bringing smiles to all.

Gayle is survived by three children, Gayla (Stephen) Wilkinson of Ocean View, Del., Dana (Joy) Green of Fort Worth, Texas, and Deanna (Tom) Ballard of Lincoln, Neb.; three grandchildren: Nathan (Teri) Wilkinson, Samantha Wilkinson and Tyanne Ballard (Rocky) Collier; three great grandchildren: MaKai Collier, Alexis and Tyler Wilkinson; two step-grandchildren, Ryan and Evan Hald; along with sisters Dawn Volbrecht and Dixie Meek.

Gayle was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Belva; a brother, Lloyal; a sister, Bonnie; a son, Greg, in 1998; and granddaughter Jennifer.

Audrey J. Coyle, 74

Audrey J. Coyle, 74, of 207 Monroe St., Charles City, died July 12, 2012, at Nora Springs Care Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 16, at Immaculate Conception Church, 106 Chapel Lane, in Charles City.

Officiating will be Father Gary Mayers and Scripture Readings read by Sister Diana. There will not be a viewing prior to the service. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Audrey Joan Coyle was born on Oct., 31, 1937, in rural Northwood, to Harvey and Mildred Kuhlmann. She attended school in Northwood, and later on in life attained her GED. Audrey was united in marriage to Dean Coyle on Aug. 11, 1953, in Manly. They made their home in the Floyd area since 1963. To their union five children were born.

Audrey spent a lot of time at home raising five children. As the children got older she was able to take on some part time jobs. She worked at Ray’s Pizza, and would take the kids for Friday night pizza. Besides working in the food industry, Audrey went to beauty school, but found her true passion in life when working for the school system as a Teacher’s Aid for special needs. She loved working at the school.

In her free time, Audrey liked to cook and bake. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage and proved it in her baking. Audrey didn’t share her recipes, but she liked to share her food, especially scotcheroos with the grandsons. Audrey enjoyed playing card games, dominos, and board games. She played Jokers with a group of friends she referred to as, “the girls.” As a family she enjoyed camping in Mason City and Riceville. She also enjoyed remodeling the house, which became a family hobby. Audrey and her husband Dean were “snow birds,” they spent a lot of time in Alamo, Texas with their many, many friends. Audrey was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Immaculate Conception Church, and the Resurrection Church in Texas. Above all else, her greatest joy in life was her family and friends who she loved spending time with. Those left to honor her memory include her children, Connie (Mike) Johnson, Chris (Rick) Mayer and Ed (DeEtt) Coyle; grandchildren, Jesse Johnson, Cody (Jennifer) Johnson, Father Gary Mayer, and Brad (Courtney) Mayer; greatgrandchildren, Landen, Jayden, and Lilly Johnson; great-grand baby to come, Alexa Mayer; sister, Kalla Lodge; sisters-in-laws, Lois Hegtvedt and Helen Arnett; special friend, Larry Waggoner; and many other relatives and many, many friends. She will be sadly missed by all who loved and knew her.

Audrey was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Coyle; her children, Penny Sue Coyle and Patrick Coyle; parents; parents- in-laws; three brothers, four brother-in-laws; and 3 sisters-in-laws.

Opal Brown, 93

Opal Brown, 93, of Charles City, died Monday, July 16, 2012, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Opal Pearl Wobith Brown was born July 17, 1918, at Charles City, the daughter of Henry and Ella (Katcher) Wobith. She received her education from rural Floyd County schools. On March 20, 1937, she was united in marriage to Loren Brown. They lived in the Charles City area all of their lives. For a number of years Opal worked at the Charles City YMCA. She was a member of Chat-a-Bit, Moose Lodge, Heritage Club and the Senior Center. Her interests included crocheting, embroidery and dancing.

Living family members include two sons, Eugene (Carol) Brown of Plainfield and Kenneth Brown of Charles City; two grandchildren, Kimberly (Brad) Reints and Brett (Dawn) Brown; and two great granddaughters, Tiffany Popes and Alyson Reints.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Kenneth “Ken” Peterson, 86, of Charles City, died Sunday, July 15, 2012, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. Kenneth Edward Peterson was born June 3, 1926, in Chickasaw County, the son of Chris and Una (Perry) Peterson. He graduated from Charles City High School and attended Iowa State University. In 1947, he married Carol Nikolas and they later divorced. Ken served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He farmed and also worked at Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company moving in 1961 to St. Paul, Minn. where he was employed at Whirlpool. Ken was a member of the American Legion. His interests included fishing, hunting, golfing, playing cards and farming.

Living family members include four children: Doug (Mary) Peterson of Little Canada, Minn., Jan Parsons of North Branch, Minn., Joyce (Jeff) Dupre of Hugo, Minn. and Sid (Sheila) Peterson of Lino Lakes, Minn.; nine grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; a daughter-in-law, Deb Peterson of Roseville, Minn.; and special friend, Irene Mehmen and her family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Marcus Peterson; two sisters and four brothers.

Roger Tibbitts, 74
U.S. Navy  (1956-1960)

Roger Tibbitts, 74, of Charles City, died Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Roger Tibbitts will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Roger Melvin Tibbitts was born May 23, 1938, in Chickasaw County, the son of Melvin and Verda (Hennick) Tibbitts. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1956. Roger proudly served in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1960. On June 16, 1972, he was united in marriage to Deanna (Haugen) at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Roger worked for Iowa Public Service until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of the V.F.W. and Elks Lodge. His love of the outdoors was evident as he was an avid fisherman, hunter and trapper. Roger and Dee always looked forward to going to the trailer at Lansing and spending time on the Mississippi boating and fishing. Mornings were made special by playing cards with his friends. Roger always took great pride in his family and looked forward to sharing his life with them. He was well known in the community and was appreciated by anyone he met. Roger will be remembered for his willingness to help a neighbor or stranger when needed. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Living family members include his wife, Deanna Tibbitts of Charles City; three children, Dawn (Dean) Wendland of Floyd, Shawn (Julie) Tibbitts of Charles City and Matt (Missie) Tibbitts of Des Moines; 10 grandchildren, Lacey Tudor, Katey Tudor, Drew Wendland, Jordan Tibbitts, Colby Tibbitts, Ryan Bond, Mitchell (Michelle) Tibbitts, Maddie Tibbitts, Mollie Tibbitts and Nate (Sydnie) Johnson; three great grandchildren, Evan Leerar, Matthew Tibbitts, Ava Johnson and two more soon to arrive; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Pattie Sickman, Linda Maulsby and Bonnie Randall; a brother, Merlin Tibbitts; and a niece, Diane Christie.

Glen ‘Pudge’ Springer

Glen “Pudge” Springer, 70, of Lansing, formerly of Charles City and Cedar
Falls, died Wednesday, July18, 2012, at his home.

A Memorial Mass for Glen Springer will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday at
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Monsignor Stanley Hayek and Reverend
John Moser will celebrate the Mass. Inurnment will be at a later date.
Friends may join the family in a celebration of Glen’s life at The Pub On
The Cedar from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday.

Glen Charles Springer was born July 6, 1942, at Charles City, the son of
Glen and Irene (Ellis) Springer. He graduated from Charles City High School
in 1960. Glen served in the National Guard and Army Reserve from 1959 to
1967. On June 6, 1964, he was united in marriage to Nancy Zimmerman. Over
the years he worked for Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company in Charles City,
Koehring Crane in Waverly, Lockwood Corporation in Gering, Neb. and retired
as president of Viking Pump in Cedar Falls in 2001. He was a member of
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Nebraska Rotary Club, Elks Lodge and
Friends of Pool 9. Glen was an avid outdoorsman enjoying various activities,
including turkey hunting, fishing for walleyes and bow hunting for deer.

Living family members include his wife, Nancy of Lansing; two daughters,
Robin (Kevin) McGlynn of Solon and Wendi (Randy) Huck of Bayard, Neb; and
five grandchildren: Becca and Ben Hoy, and Cassandra, Chelby and Cammie
Huck.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters: Betty Rath,
Norma Kobliska and Joan Smith.

Ruth Kloster, 84, of Charles City, died Friday, July 20, 2012, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Ruth June Myers Kloster was born June 24, 1928, at Carroll, the daughter of Ole and Ina (Kee) Myers. She graduated from Central City High School in 1947. On June 26, 1947, she was united in marriage to Norman Kloster. For over 25 years they owned and operated Nashua Plumbing and Heating where Ruth worked as a bookkeeper. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and V.F.W. and American Legion Auxiliary. Ruth enjoyed collecting Danish and animal plates and most of all playing various card games.

Living family members include two children, Debra (Steve) Downing of Charles City and Duane (Tina) Kloster of Spring Hill, Fla; four grandchildren, Jeremy Downing, Lyn Downing, Brianna (Kyle) Moore and Samantha Kloster and special friend Joe; and three great grandsons, Lance, James, Dallas and another on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two brothers, Russell Myers and Ray Harrison Myers.

Betty Gail Cook Bahe was born July 2, 1935, at Wadena, the daughter of John and Marjorie (Adams) Cook. She graduated from Lamont High School in 1953. On September 27, 1957, she was united in marriage to Arnold Bahe at Lamont. For 11 years she was employed at Allen Hospital Credit Union retiring in 1997. In 2000 they moved to Charles City. Betty was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary where she had served as vice president and had also been a Hospice volunteer. Her interests included camping, crafts, reading, baking and playing board games or games on the computer. She especially treasured the time she spent with her family.

Living family members include her husband Arnold Bahe of Charles City; three sons, Craig (Sandra) Bahe of Elburn, Ill., David Bahe and special friend Denise Bledsoe of Charles City and Evan (Valerie) Bahe of Snohomish, Wash.; six grandchildren, Adam Bahe, Jeremy (Becky) Bahe, Elizabeth (Tim) Foust, Michael Bahe, Gretchen Bahe and Hannah Bahe; a sister, Barb (Max) Wolfgram of Manchester; a brother, Donald (Kim) Cook of Lamont; and several nephews and a niece.

John McCleary, 78

John McCleary, 78, of Charles City, died Thursday, July 19, 2012, at Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

John Paul McCleary was born October 19, 1933, at Winterset, the son of Paul and Cecilia (Langbehn) Mc-Cleary. He graduated from Dawson High School in 1951 and attended Iowa State University. John served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

On August 2, 1953, he was united in marriage to Donna Weddle at Dawson EUB Church. For a number of years John worked as a Soil Conservationist and then as an engineer salesperson until his retirement. John was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he served on various boards. He was president of the Charles City Library Board during the renovation. His hobbies included woodworking, bird watching and feeding, drawing, keeping a journal and traveling all over the United States with favorite locations being the Mississippi River and Yellow River Forest.

Living family members include his wife, Donna McCleary of Charles City; four children: Jon (Debbie) of Charles City, Deborah (Brant) Foutch of Minneapolis, Minn., Sheryl (Gary) Rausch of Decorah and Robert (Martha “Marty”) McCleary of Dublin, Ireland; six, grandchildren: Shaun Boyd, Jay (Jennifer) McCleary, Paul Mc-Cleary, Heather McCleary, Kelly (Daniel) Gaona and Max Foutch; nine great-grandchildren: Nevaeh, Nakotah, Brooklyn, Peyton, Paige, Abigail, Bella, Payton and Mateo; a brother, Robert (Peggy) McCleary of Perry; and a sister, Virginia (Keith) Dills of San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Lillian Janet (Jones) Joslin

Lillian Janet (Jones) Joslin died July 18, 2012 at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City due to complications resulting from heart surgery.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Nashua with Rev. Okitakoyi Lundula officiating. Interment will be in Riverton Cemetery, rural Nashua, with Jamey Welter, Tim Fisher, Mitch Rosol, Benjamin Kostka, Robert Beatty and Aron Beatty serving as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers are Michael (Casey) Jones, Brett Jones, Scott Jones and Justin Beatty.

Lillian was born Feb. 2, 1939, at her Aunt Lillian Fisher’s home in rural Chickasaw County to Neal Clifford Jones and Mary Lillian (Rodamaker) Jones.

Lillian was known as Jan to her family and friends. She graduated from Nashua High School in 1947 and worked as a caregiver at the Floyd County Home until she married Rodney George Joslin Jr. on Sept. 12, 1964, at the Faith Bible Chapel in Charles City, Iowa.

From start to finish, Jan’s life revolved around helping others. Everyone who had the privilege to know her all have said that she was the least selfish person they had ever known, and no one had a bigger heart.

Throughout her life Jan’s love of family and its history is evident in the geneology work that she did for many years. The roots of where her family began and its growth was something Jan treasured and she showed the same love to everyone.

Though she will be missed by all, her life is one her family and friends will celebrate forever.

She will be missed by her remaining relatives including her husband, Rodney G. Joslin of Charles City; one brother, Thomas (Sandra) Clyde Jones of Nev.; nieces and nephews: Kimberly (Jones) Roby, Scott Jones. Robin (Jones) Lamy, Michael (Casey) and Brett Jones; many cousins who considered her their aunt: Rosena (Wells) Beatty, Robert Beatty, Justin, Robert, Aron, Lillee Beatty, Rachelle (Wells) Bobenmoyer, Cheri Fisher Welter, Rhonda Fisher Rosol, Tim Fisher and many other great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Lillian was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jacob Leslie Jones and Araminta Charlotta (Carter) Jones, and Myron Henry Rodamaker and Clara Eugenia (Wiltse) Rodamaker; and her parents, Neal Clifford Jones and Mary Lillian (Rodamaker) Jones; as well as siblings Alice Wilhemine (Jones) Deyo, Theran Stuart, and James Kyle Jones.

Margaret ‘Peggy’ Moore-Frazee-Guynn, 65, of 51 Cedar Terrace St., Charles City died July 22, 2012, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo.

Margaret ‘Peggy’ Moore-Frazee-Guynn was born on Jan. 12, 1947, in San Antonio, Texas, to William Moore and Dorothy Gleason. She lived in Waterloo later in her adult life, but grew up in Minnesota with her brothers and sisters where she developed her skill of cooking. She was an avid cook for not only her family but for a number of organizations through the years. She loved to read novels, especially those by Stephen King. She was married to Richard Frazee for 27 years and later married Richard Hockens. One of her favorite companions in the last few years was her dog Trixi.

Margaret is survived by her children: Ricki (Dave) Olson, Dale Frazee, Kim (Jeff) Wedeking and Val ( Randy) Frazee; seven grandchildren: Sarah, Richard, Shawna, JoAnna, Beth, Cassidy, Tim; brothers Thomas, Cliffton, William and James; sisters Anne Blair, Beverly Marty and Ruth Hallin; six great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and her best friend, Katie Wygle.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Richard Frazee and Richard Hockens; grandmother Margaret Gleason; along with three brothers.

Jerry J. Platt

Jerry J. Platt, of Boise, Idaho, and formerly of Waverly, passed away June 6, 2012.

He was born May 15, 1933, in Oelwein to Ross Adrian and Laura M Platt. Jerry attended Oelwein Community Schools and graduated in 1952. On Aug. 17, 1958, an over 50-year union was born as Jerry married Leah M Anderson at the First Methodist Church in Floyd.

Jerry’s educational accomplishments beyond high school were numerous: BA from University of Iowa 1962, Masters in Science Education from University of Virginia 1970, Medical Library Science Degree from University of Illinois 1971, and Nursing Degree from Northern Iowa Area Community College 1982.

Jerry had a varied work career, including an internship as medical librarian, employment by the Chicago Great Western Railroad and Quaker Oats. He held Science teaching positions in Downers Grove, Ill., Shorewood, Wisc., and Rova, Ill. Jerry was most proud of his last 15 years of employment as a RN at the Bartel's Nursing Home in Waverly.

A voracious reader and avid sports fan, Jerry was also an Evening Kiwanis Club member and board member of the Bremer County Historical Society in Waverly. A lifelong Christian, Jerry was a member of Baptist Church in Charles City, the Trinity Methodist Church in Waverly, and most recent the Hillview Methodist Church in Boise, Idaho.

Two sisters, Orabell J. and Jeanne H. Platt, and a brother, Ross E. Platt, preceded Jerry in death. Living family members include his sister, Margaret Gonzales, of Waterloo; a brother, Ronald A. Platt, of Reno, Nev.; a sister-in-law, Deleva Mae Platt, of Independence; as well as his wife, Leah M. Platt; two sons, Russ A. Platt, of Lubbock, Texas, and Dana L. Platt (wife Roxanne Platt), of Meridian, Idaho. Jerry’s grandchildren include: Sheila M., Justin A., Braden J. and Bennett G. Platt.

A memorial service was held at Hillview Methodist Church on June 12. Final Celebration of Life service for friends and family will be held Aug. 2 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Methodist Church in Waverly. His final place of rest will be Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd.

In place of flowers, the family has requested all memorials be given to Bartel's Lutheran Home in Waverly.


Mildred ‘Millie’ Tompkins

Mildred “Millie” Tompkins, 87, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Charles City, died Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at the Western Home Communities Thalman Square in Cedar Falls.

She was born April 23, 1925, in Charles City, the daughter of Otto and Julliette (Farcy) Michaelis. Millie served in the United States Navy WAVES during World War II. She married Theodore Tompkins on Dec. 14, 1947, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, and he preceded her in death Aug. 2, 1994. Millie was a telephone operator in Charles City and Waterloo with Northwestern Bell (Qwest) Telephone Company for 36 years, retiring in 1981.

She is survived by one daughter, Sandra K.

Kessel, of West Warwick, R.I.; two grandchildren, Kyle Kessel of Boston, Mass., and Meagan Kessel of Providence, R.I.; one brother, Donald (Akemi) Michaelis, of Dallas, Texas, and two sisters, Louise (Donald) McIntosh of Waterloo and Betty Colonnese of Mesa, Ariz.

Millie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three brothers: George, Harry and James Michaelis.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 31, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls, with inurnment at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Monday, and one hour before service Tuesday, at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49.

Dr. Max Eugene Johns, 86
U.S. Army    WWII

Dr. Max Eugene Johns, 86, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2012, at Casa de la Luz Hospice, in Tucson, Ariz., from congestive heart failure.

Dr. Johns was born Sept. 18, 1925, in Republic, Kan. He grew up in several small towns in Nebraska and graduated from Long Pine High School in 1943. He attended the University of Nebraska before enlisting in the Army Air Corp, where he was trained to be a tail gunner in a B-24 bomber.

Johns served in the 5th Army Air Corp in the South Pacific Theater in WWII. He flew 35 missions against the Japanese and was honorably discharged in 1946.

He returned to the University of Nebraska, where he received a Bachelor of Science in1948, and his Doctor of Optometry from Northern Illinois College of Optometry in 1950. On June 4, 1949, he married Joan (Jodie) Truhlsen. Johns practiced optometry in Beatrice, Neb., for two years before establishing an optometric practice in Charles City in 1952, retiring in 1992.

He and Jodie moved to Sun City Vistoso, Oro Valley, Ariz., in 1996. Dr. Johns was a civic and cultural leader for many years in Charles City. He was a member of the First Congregational Church and choir for 30 years; Kiwanis Club; Elks Club Past Exalted Ruler, board member and president, Charles City Board of Education; president of the Chamber of Commerce; president of the Industrial Development Corporation; charter member of the Charles City Ambassadors; charter member of the Charles City Singers; president of the Charles City Country Club; Salvation Army board member; president of the Community Concerts Association; member of the Charles City Municipal Band; North Iowa Concert Band; North Iowa Symphony; charter member of Camerata St. Charles Madrigal Singers; president of Friends of the Library; and a member of the University of Nebraska Alumni Association.

After moving to Tucson in 1996, Max sang in the Tucson Community Chorus and played French horn in the Tucson Concert Band. He enjoyed golf, tennis, travel, listening to classical music, jazz and academic lectures from Great Courses. Max had a driving passion for life and all of its beauty expressed through music and the arts. He was pragmatic, generous and optimistic. He lived by the “Golden Rule” and, as a result, everyone enjoyed his company and sense of humor.

Dr. Johns valued family above all and is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jodie; a son, Jay Douglas Johns; daughter Vicky Johns Vandervort and son-in-law Robert Vandervort, with grandson Michael Vandervort; daughter Gayle Johns Rose and sons Morgan and Michael Rose. His grandson, Max Rose; his parents, Perry and Ethel Johns; and brother Donald predeceased him.

The Neptune Society is in charge of the arrangements.

A memorial service will be held in Charles City at a date to be determined.
