MARBLE ROCK — Elizabeth Staudt, 77, of Marble Rock, passed away Monday, April 30, 2012, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

Vicki Lynn Wegner, 47
 
Vicki Lynn Wegner, 47, lost her battle with lung cancer on Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012 at her home in Minneapolis, Minn.

Vicki was born Jan. 4, 1965, and grew up in the Charles City area. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1983. The Minneapolis area was home to her for several years where she worked as a medical assistant at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and Clinics. Vicki’s interests included cooking for family and friends, gardening and fishing to name a few. She especially enjoyed working with a Special Olympics group.

She is survived by her daughter, Sydney Peterson; companion in life, Wesley Schlinder; parents Roger and Helen Wegner, of Gretna, Neb.; brothers Mark (Sonja) Wegner, of Papillion, Neb., Mike Wegner (Calista), of Garner, Jim Pitz (Lisa), of Charles City; and nieces and nephews.

She was full of joy and laughter, she will be greatly missed.

Edward Krall, 101

Edward Krall, 101, of Charles City, died Saturday, May 5, 2012, at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Charles City, with Reverend Carl Ries celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City, with military rites by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may greet the family 5-8 p.m. Wednesday where there will be a 7 p.m. scripture service.

Visitation will continue an hour prior to the Mass on Wednesday.

Edward George Krall was born Jan. 6, 1911, on a farm in Saratoga near Cresco, the son of Ammon and Mary (Moural) Krall. He attended Colwell High School, graduating in 1932. In 1936, he opened Krall’s Café in Colwell. Ed served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant and squad leader in the Pacific Theater during WWII from 1941 until 1945. On Oct. 18, 1947, he was united in marriage to Evelyn White. To this union, three children were born. The couple continued to operate the café in Colwell until moving to Charles City in 1964. He was head of maintenance for 20 years at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, and drove school bus off and on for over 50 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW and American Legion. Ed enjoyed horses, gardening and listening to Saturday morning polka music on the radio. He cherished time spent with family and was very patriotic and loyal to his country.

Living family members include his three children: Karel (Jeff) Brengman of Rochester, Minn., Janis (Bob) Steblay of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Donald Krall of Charles City; three grandchildren: Ryan, Kiersten and Marissa; three great-grandchildren: Julian, Vivica and Nadia; a brother, Ben (Imelda) Krall of Charles City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife Evelyn in 2006; a granddaughter, Elissa; a brother, Bill Krall; a sister, Helen Swant; and three half-siblings, Jerry, Emma and Tilly.

Elizabeth Mary ‘Betty’ Staudt

MARBLE ROCK — A Memorial Mass for Elizabeth Mary Staudt of Marble Rock will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Roseville (rural Marble Rock). Burial will be in the St. Mary Cemetery, Roseville.

Visitation will be at the Roseville School from 5-8 p.m., Tuesday, May 8, with a Scriptural Wake at 7 p.m., followed by a Rosary Service conducted by the St. Mary Rosary Society.

Elizabeth Mary Theis was born on Oct. 7, 1934, in Ionia, Chickasaw Co., a daughter of Lawrence ‘Larry’ and Florence (McGowan) Theis and passed away Monday, April 30, 2012, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene following a brief and courageous battle with cancer.

She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Charles City. She worked for the Charles City Creamery through High School and was employed by Look Magazine in Des Moines following graduation. Once married, she became a devoted homemaker and mother.

On Oct. 2, 1954, she was united in marriage to Robert L. Staudt at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia. This union was blessed with seven children. The couple farmed east of Marble Rock until 1979, when they moved into town. In 2006 Betty moved to Friendship Acres, her home until her death.

Betty has been a long time member of St. Mary Catholic Church where she belonged to the Rosary Society and taught CCD for many years. She was a 4-H Leader, member of several bowling leagues, and belonged to various bridge clubs. She enjoyed playing cards as well as many other games, visiting the casino, and was an avid reader. Her true passion was celebrating holidays and other special events with her family featuring her home-made pies and desserts. Betty will be remembered as a devoted mother and especially a loving grandmother.

Loving family members include her children: Deb (David) Vermillion of Dale City, Va., Gary (Julie) Staudt of Iowa City, Tim (Jeanne) Staudt of Rockford, Bill (Carmen) Staudt of Rockford, Becky (John) Shook of Rockford, Vicky (Don) Gallagher of Casselberry, Fla., Sandy (John) Pieper of Ankeny; 19 grandchildren: Emily Vermillion, Elizabeth Vermillion, Aaron (Michelle) Staudt, Andy Staudt, Amanda (Ermin) Mehic, Maria Staudt, Barbara Staudt (fiancé Ryan Danielson), Sabrina Staudt, Alisha Staudt, Nate Staudt, Nicholas Staudt, Nicole (Doug) Schrage, Tony (Heather) Shook, Adam Shook, Sara Shook, Devan Gallagher, Will Pieper, Lucas Pieper and Cole Pieper; great-grandchildren: Allison Staudt, Caden Schrage, Ava Schrage, Quinn Schrage, Charlotte Shook and another baby on the way; one sister: Kathy (Don) Blocker of New Hampton,brother and sister-in-laws: Jim Rissler, Lynn (Nancy) Lorenzen, Russell (Betty Jo) Staudt and Tom (Evelyn) Cousins along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, on March 18, 2002, her parents, her brother Jerry Theis; her sisters: Patricia Rissler and Ginger Lorenzen; and many close friends whom she loved as family.

Alice Cornelia Ewald, 92,

Alice Cornelia Ewald, 92, of Monticello, formally of Rockford, passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.

A Celebration of her Life was held Saturday May 5, at Zion Lutheran Church at Rockford. Burial took place at Westside Cemetery in Marble Rock. Cornelia’s grandchildren were the honorary pallbearers.

Cornelia was born on March 3, 1920, in Batavia, to H.Vern and Ruth (Pollock) Culbertson. She graduated from West High School in Waterloo in 1938 and went to Iowa State Teacher’s College. After receiving her two year teaching certificate, Cornelia started her teaching career in Sigorney. She started teaching in Marble Rock in 1941, where she met Claude Ewald. Claude and Cornelia were married on April 18, 1942, in Missouri. The early years of their marriage were spent on a farm outside of Marble Rock where they worked and raised their family. When the children were older, Cornelia returned to teaching in the Marble Rock district. She also earned her BA degree from the University of Northern Iowa. In 1964, the family moved to Rockford. In 1977, granddaughters Mai-Ly and Kirstey came to live with Claude and Cornelia. Claude passed away in 1985. Cornelia retired from the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock School District in 1990 after touching the lives of hundreds of students. In 2008, Cornelia moved to Pennington Assisted Living in Monticello and later to the nursing home. Cornelia was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Rockford.

Left to honor her memory are her children: Thomas (Reona) Ewald of Anamosa, Richard Ewald of Boise, Idaho, Mary (Bill) Glosemeyer of Apple Valley, Minn., and Jane Govro of Shoreview, Minn.; her grandchildren: Ann Ford (Irvin) Palmer, Lannette (Mark) Ford-Mehaffy, Matthew Ewald, Mai-Ly Ewald, Kirstey Ewald, Anna Glosemeyer, Lance (Jill) Glosemeyer, Blake Govro and Jeremy Govro; 10 great-grandchildren; her sister, Lois Hayden of Coralville, sister-in-law Marvel Hunter of Des Moines; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Cornelia was preceded in death by her husband Claude, her parents, her brothers John and Richard and an infant grandson.

Ellen Elise ‘Peg’ Haycraft
 

Ellen Elise “Peg” Haycraft of Waterloo, formerly of Charles City, passed away in Mesa, Ariz. following a long illness.

Peg was born Dec. 17, 1926, in Lincoln, Neb.

She married Phillip Eugene “Gene” Haycraft Nov.

10, 1944. They lived in Eagle Grove until moving to Charles City in 1959, where Peg worked at Citizens National Bank. After Peg retired, they moved to Waterloo. They enjoyed winters in Mesa for over 20 years.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Gene, and two sisters. She is survived by a son, Keith (Charlotte) of Evansdale; two daughters, Sandi Bonlie of Brodhead, Wash., and Ellen Conner of Waterloo; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two brothers and one sister; as well as a very devoted friend, John Shaw of Waterloo.

A memorial service will be at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 4031 Lafayette Road, Evansdale, on Friday, May 11 at 10 a.m.

Kenneth Mickelson, 90

Kenneth Mickelson, 90, of Waverly, died peacefully with his family at his side in his Waverly home on Sunday, May 6, 2012, of natural causes.

Ken was born on Aug. 4, 1921, in Reedsburg, Wis., the son of Harold William and Esther Olefina (Svenson) Mickelson. Following graduation from Reedsburg High School in 1939, he attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He joined the United States Navy in 1941 during World War II. He served on the USS Restless as Radioman First Class. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946.

On Nov. 29, 1947, Ken was united in marriage to Rita Jane Lindow, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Ken and Rita enjoyed 63 years of marriage before her death in December 2009. Professionally, Ken was a manager for J.C. Penney stores located in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Charles City, Iowa. Following retirement from J.C. Penney, Ken purchased and operated the OK Hardware Store in Waverly. Ken was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly and volunteered at the Waverly Hospital. He enjoyed reading, but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He and his family spent summers boating, fishing and water skiing at his cabin on Lake Chetek in Wisconsin, and fishing and watching the birds and wildlife at his home on the Cedar River.

Ken is survived by four children: Linda (Dave) Lindaman of Lowden, Joan Shriver of Waverly, James (Jane) Mickelson of Iowa City and Kay Mark of Davenport; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita in 2009, infant brother Paul, and his parents.

Public visitation will be held on Saturday, May 12, from 1-2 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Private family funeral and graveside services will follow.

L. Neil Waldorf, 89

U.S. Marine Corps  WWII

VINTON – L. Neil Waldorf, 89, of Vinton, died Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha following a sudden illness. He had been a resident at Windsor Manor in Vinton for the past three years.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, May 14, at the Vinton Presbyterian Church with Pastors Fred Darbonne and Kara Courtney officiating. Private family committal services will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton with military rites conducted by Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post 57 and Iowa Military Funeral Honors.

Neil was born Aug. 10, 1922, in Hudson, S.D., the son of Horace S. and Florence Ethel Cable Waldorf. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton in 1940. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during WWII. He was stationed in the South Pacific and was discharged as a Corporal.

On Aug. 21, 1945, Neil was united in marriage with Kathleen L. Potter in Van Horne. Following retirement, the couple volunteered at a hospital in Mission, Texas, for many years. Kathleen preceded him in death on April 27, 2004.

Neil co-owned 4th Street Cleaners in Vinton with his brother-inlaw, Marion Isbell; he worked as an accountant and ran a tax service; he owned the Hamburger Inn in Vinton; and he was also a Paymaster for D.C. Taylor Co., retiring in 1986.

Neil was a past member of Vinton’s Presbyterian Church, Kiwanis Club and Country Club. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, camping, boating, bowling and playing cards. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Neil is survived by one son, Monte (Kathy) Waldorf of Charles City; three daughters: Marcia (Delmar) Smith of Center Point, Karen (Edward) Thayer of Chandler, Ariz., and Joyce Wood of Cedar Rapids; and one sister, Marion Isbell of Vinton; two sisters-in-law: Harleen Waldorf of Vinton and Ella Potter of Keystone; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother, H. Cable Waldorf; and one sister, Raechel Raish.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.

Mary Jane Schrage, 86, of Marion and formerly of Charles City, died May 8, 2012 at St. Luke’s Hospital following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, May 11, at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Guernsey Cemetery, Guernsey.

Patricia Ann Lyman

Patricia Ann Lyman, of Kingwood, Texas, formerly of Charles City, passed away peacefully at home on May 10, 2012, after a lengthy illness.

She was born March 14, 1930, to the late Estel and Blanch Sisco in Chicago. Pat graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1948. She married the late Jack Lyman in 1948 and they were married 49 years. She spent the majority of her life in Charles City where she enjoyed golfing, playing cards, and going to coffee with the girls.

After moving to Kingwood she became affectionately known as “G Pat” to her Texas family and enjoyed taking the family dog, Comet, for walks in the neighborhood and going to the senior luncheons on Wednesdays.

She is survived by her two sons, Mike (Christi) Lyman of Mason City and Tim (Beth) Lyman of Kingwood Texas; three grandchildren, Tim Jr., Kelly, and Sean Lyman: two step grandchildren, Logan and Aaron (Jenisha) Garden, two great step grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Jack, her brother and both of her parents.

Lavern W. Graeser

Lavern W. Graeser, 81, of Plainfield, died Friday, May 11, 2012, at the Clarkesville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m.    Tuesday, May 15, at the Plainfield Baptist Church, in Plainfield, with Pastor Shawn Geer presiding. Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City, with Jeremy Stough, John Meier, Troy Weidler, Kyle Graeser, Chad Backer and Casey Graeser serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Ronald Hinders, Scott Weidler, Chris Meier, Jamie Grote, Michael Meier, Justin Meier, Jessica Meier, Tina Gamundoy, Les Graeser, Jennifer Chesnut, Tim Backer, Janel Helfter, Michelle Gaston, William Dooly, Victoria Hampton, Mandy Graeser, Mitch Wayne, Nicole Becker and Danny Graeser.

Friends may greet the family from 4-8 p.m. Monday, May 14, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

If so desired, memorials may be given to Cedar Valley Hospice. (641) 435-4134 Lavern William Graeser was born June 29, 1930, in rural Butler County, the son of Elmer and Rosie (Ellerman) Graeser. He received his education in Plainfield graduating from the Plainfield High School in 1949. On Nov. 27, 1949, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, he married Edith White. To this union six children were born. Lavern initially farmed in the Shell Rock area and near Waverly before moving to his current home place just west of Plainfield. His wife, Edith died on March 12, 1999, at the age of 66. On May 28, 2004, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, he married Virginia (Bridges) Hinders.

Lavern farmed his entire life and the last years enjoyed farming with his youngest son. He also enjoyed playing cards, dancing, fishing and traveling throughout the Midwest. He made many trips to Branson and loved going to the country music shows. He followed the wrestling program for his sons and grandsons and loved going to rodeos when they came to McElroy Auditorium in Waterloo.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; six children: Sharlene (Dennis) Weidler of Waverly, Patricia (Dennis) Meier of Waterloo, Steven (Barbara) Graeser of Hampton, Barbara (Steve) Chase of Waterloo, Karen (Steve Jordan) Graeser of Nashua and Kevin (Susan) Graeser of Nashua; 24 grandchildren: Scott and Troy Weidler, John, Chris, Jamie (Grote), Michael, Justin and Jessica Meier; Casey, Tina (Gamundoy) and Les Graeser; Jennifer (Chesnut), Chad and Tim Backer; Janel (Helfter) and Michelle (Gaston; Jeremy Stough; Mitchell Wayne, Mandy, Nicole (Becker), Danny and Kyle Graeser; William and Victoria (Hampton) Dooly; 42 great-grandchildren; one sister, Cloris (Art) Mehmen of Plainfield; one sister-in-law, Frances Whites of Clarksville; three brothers-in-law: Howard (Karen) White of Shell Rock, Richard (Carol) Poppe of Waterloo and Clyde Casady of Plainfield; step-children Richard (Holly) Hinders, Vernita (Dean) Hobson, Vickie (Jeff) Chesnut and Ronald (Melissa) Hinders, all of Clarksville, and Valeria (John) Marks of Plainfield. He also had 16 step-grandchildren; 22 step-great-grandchildren.

Duane Onley Newton, 80

Duane Onley Newton, 80, of Bella Vista, Ark., died Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Circle of Life – Legacy in Bentonville, Arkansas. He was born on Aug. 24, 1931, in Nora Springs, Iowa, to Theonley Newton and Elsa Marah Newton. Duane married Shirley Hicks on Aug. 2, 1969 in Coon Rapids He graduated from the State Teachers College of Iowa, where he played baseball, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He received his masters degree from Drake University.

“Newt” taught, coached and was an administrator in the NESCO and Colo-NESCO school districts for 39 years. He was inducted into the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches and Athletic Directors Halls of Fame.

In his retirement, he moved to Bella Vista from Zearing, Iowa. Newt enjoyed fishing, golfing with the Oldies and 9-hole groups, gardening, and watching baseball and the Razorbacks. He was a member of the Bella Vista Community Church, and a 50 year member of American Legion Post 116.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Newton of Bella Vista; two sons, Thomas Newton (Becky) of Des Moines and Christopher Newton of Springdale, Ark.; one brother, Jerry Newton (Joyce) of Charles City; and twin grandchildren, Roy and Claire.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Zearing Cemetery. A luncheon at the Zearing United Methodist Church will follow the service.

Sheilah A. McClain (Dedrickson) nee Hughes

Sheilah A. McClain (Dedrickson) nee Hughes, of Charles City, died suddenly on May 14, 2012, in Mason City at age 67.

Preceded in death by husbands Donald D. Dedrickson and Jack F. McClain, and sister Lesley E. Hughes.

Survived by son Sean M. Dedrickson (Leah), grandsons Kelly and Ian of Manitou Springs, Col., and son Christopher Dedrickson (Angela Finholt), grandchildren Samantha, Andrea and Tony, of Lakeland, Minn. Also survived by sisters Barbara J. Williams (Paul) of Panama City Beach, Fla., Pamela W. Ernst (Thomas) of St. Paul, Minn., and Norma F. Stevenson (John) of Eagan, Minn.; brother Almon John Hughes of Savage, Minn.; and by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Sheilah was a very avid quilter and active in the Charles City community in numerous volunteer activities. Her careers ranged from paralegal, small business owner and retail clerk to over-the-road trucking.

The family wishes to express thanks to Mercy Hospital of Mason City for their efforts and support in the family’s time of need.

Visitation will be at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, Lake St. Croix Beach, Minn., on May 22 at 10 a.m., followed by the service at 11 a.m. and a luncheon. Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, El Paso, Wis., immediately afterward.

William “Bill” Harrold, a long time Charles City businessman, passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at his home.

Per Bill’s request, no service will be held. A celebration of life for the family is being planned.

William H. Harrold was born in Olney, Ill., the son of William H. and Opal Crosby Harrold. The family later moved to Iowa and settled near Greene. After graduating from Greene High School, Bill continued his education at Ann Arbor, Mich., and became a supervisor for Ford Motor Company. Upon his return to Iowa Bill became owner of B&H Transport Company with offices in Mason City, Greene and Pocahontas. Before his retirement, he ventured into real estate and maintained an office at 101 N. Main St. in Charles City.

He was a past member of Lions Club, Charles City Country Club and Congregational Church where he earlier served as a deacon. He also attended Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church with his family. Annual fishing trips with his children, golfing with his friends, card games with the Field family and spending time with his grandchildren and special nephew Ethan, brought great joy to his life. Bill will be remembered for his kindness, honesty, respect for others, devotion and caring ways to his family and his infectious smile.

Living family members include his wife, Dianne Harrold; his children: Robert (Tonya) Harrold, Barbara (John) Jansee, Bill (Barb) Harrold, Jr., Becky (Chet) Scott, Bruce Harrold and Mark (Karen) Hagen; 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; a brother, George “Buddy” Harrold; and four sisters-in-law: Delores Abel, Donna (Larry) Stewart, Dixie (Jack) Dunagan and Debbie (Dar) Gitch.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Eileen DePuew; a brother, Paul Harrold; a daughter-in-law, Michele Harrold; and a sister-in-law, Dolly Field Lyman.

Jane Mack, 85

Jane Mack, 85, of New Hampton and formerly of Lexington, Mass., died Friday, May 11, 2012, at her home.

Online condolences for Jane’s family may be left at hugebackfuneralhome.com Jane Cridland Mack was born Nov. 23, 1926, In Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of George and Estelle (Heyland) Cridland. She was the youngest of three children and took on the role of jokester and gofer. She grew up in the Philadelphia area and graduated in a class of 520 from Upper Darby High School in 1944. She attended the University of Minnesota then transferred to the University of Pennsylvania where she obtained a BSN (Nursing) in 1949. She worked at the University Of Pennsylvania Hospital where she taught nursing and met Charles L. Mack, a graduate student in physics. They married on June 10, 1950. On April 25, 1951, they had twin girls. Charles obtained employment as a physicist at Lincoln Lab for Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston in 1953. Another daughter was born Aug. 2, 1954, followed by a son on Sept. 6, 1956. In 1957, she and her family moved to Paris, France, because Chuck was working on an MIT project for NATO there. She returned to the Boston area in 1959 and worked at area hospitals as an RN.

She became interested in early childhood development and took further training at Dickenson College in Pennsylvania in early childhood education. In 1963, she founded the Lexington Montessori School with a few interested parents and served as its headmistress through 1991. Under her leadership the school expanded to 200 students from age 1-½ through sixth grade. The school built a lower elementary building in 1990 and named it in her honor. On the 25th anniversary of the school, she was recognized by then Governor Michael Dukakis for her “outstanding contribution to the field of child development.” She was published in a number of professional journals and served as national chairperson of the teachers in the American Montessori Society from 1972-1976.

Jane had time for sports after her children left home and developed into a competitive tennis player. She ran and completed the Boston Marathon at the age of 58.

In the summer of 1995, she assisted with the Belamerica Day Camp held in New Hampton. She appeared in the ‘Who’s Who’ of American Education in 1996 and 1997. She retired as a teacher of the toddler class of Lexington Montessori School in 2000.

Jane loved to travel and took extensive trips with Overseas Adventures to Russia, China, Tibet and India. She became the volunteer director of admissions for a small nursing home, tutored elementary students and substitute taught in before moving to Iowa in the summer of 2006. She initially lived in Iowa City before settling in New Hampton. In the 2007-2008 school year she informally volunteered with Mrs. Nobisch’s kindergarten class where she became known as “Grandma Jane.” She was a foster grandparent volunteer at New Hampton Elementary School for fourth grade in 2009-2010 and kindergarten in 2010-2011. In this time span, she visited her daughters safari camp north of Nairobi, and traveled to France, Ukraine, Italy and a number of U.S. states including Alaska. She loved spending time with her family with a special focus of course on the great-grandbabies and toddlers. Jane is survived by one son, David (Amy) Mack of San Francisco; three daughters: Judy (Kit) O’Donohoe of New Hampton, Jacqueline (J.F.) Damon of Nairobi, Kenya, and Nancy (Paul) Millice of Iowa City; nine grandchildren: Jennifer (Eyal) O’Donohoe of Salt Lake City, Utah, Lisa Damon of Paris, France, Val (Stephane) Damon-Perrier of Nairobi, Kenya, Emily (Russ) O’Donohoe of San Francisco, B.J. McDuffie of Washington, D.C., Warren (Adriane) McDuffie of Iowa City, Brian Mack and Daniel Mack, both of San Francisco, Masha (Leo) Simmons of Minneapolis; eight great-grandchildren: Niko Simmons, Hugo Perrier, Alex McDuffie, Cayden McDuffie, Lillian Bainer, Ethan Shafran, Lea Perrier and Chloe Perrier.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Lawrence Mack; one brother, Charles Cridland; and one sister, Ruth Tuppeny.


Avis F. Wood

ROCKFORD — Avis Francis Wood, 84, of Rockford, died Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 2, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1921 317th St., south of Osage, with Pastor Byron Northwick officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Avis was born Dec. 28, 1927, near Osage, the daughter of John and Esther (Brandt) Gunsallus. She was baptized on Jan. 30, 1928, at Toeterville Lutheran Church and was also confirmed there. Avis graduated from Osage High School on May 23, 1947. She married Russel Wood on June 4, 1949, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Avis spent her whole life as a homemaker while Russel worked as a carpenter for a Mason City company most of his life. She was a very active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, south of Osage. Her greatest love was her family. Avis was a very giving person and enjoyed doing whatever she could for them. She loved cooking, gardening, sewing and greatly enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their families.

Avis is survived by her children: Bruce (Barb) Wood of Rockford, Eugene (Julie) Wood of Mason City,, Rose (Ron) Hejna of Garner, John (special friend, Vickie) Wood of Rudd, Lesa Eckert of Garner and Arlyn (Shelly) Wood of Rudd; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Merlin (Dorothy) Gunsallus of McIntire; and a sister, Marlys (Bob) Starry of McIntire.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Russel, in 1996; her granddaughter, Brigett Wirtjes; and an infant brother, Orvis Gunsallus.

Marjorie Bode, 94

Marjorie Bode, 94, of Algona, died on Thursday May 24, 2012, at the Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa in Mason City. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m.

Marjorie Alice Bode was born March 5, 1918, in Burt, the daughter of Leonard and Edna (Jenkinson) Cruikshank. She attended elementary in a one room school in Union Township and graduated from Algona High School in 1935. Marjorie attended Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls. She taught several years in Kossuth County country schools.

Marjorie married Floyd T. Bode on June 18, 1940, at St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church. She gave up her teaching profession to raise five children and with her husband send them through college. However, she continued her teaching skills as she impressed upon her family the love of literature, poetry, nature, and travel. She taught the art of importance of hard work as she raised chickens, large gardens and preserved hundreds of jars of food every year in addition to making sure her children had the opportunities for extra-curricular activities. She would take breaks and take her young children fishing at nearby lakes.

Marjorie was a member of Plum Creek Homemakers Club, Toastmaster’s, Farm Bureau Women, American Field Service, St Cecelia’s Ladies Circle and a Lioness in the Algona Lions. She loved people, had a sweet smile, and was known for her birthday angel food cakes. Traveling was education to her and not only did she travel thru all 50 states, but also six continents and some of them more than once. Bird watching was her love and her children can identify many as a result. As a child, she spent her time memorizing poetry and continued that feat the rest of her life. At the age of 93, she could still recite “Little Boy Blue” — a 24-line Eugene Field classic.

Survivors include five children: Janice (Allen) Christensen of Iowa City; Allan Bode of Charles City; Russell (Maggie) Bode of Algona, Philip (Ann) Bode of Baton Rouge, La., and Alice Jane (Herb) McBride of Tucson, Ariz.; 17 grandchildren: Chad, Brett, and Lance Christensen, Sean, Christopher, Ruby, Benjamin and Louis Bode, Jennifer Hughes, Bridget Bode, Ivy Andersen, Allison Hernandez, Amanda McDaniel, Andrea Abad, Melonie Henry, and Miranda and Melissa McBride; 25 great-grandchildren: Alex, Claire, Nile, Thurman, Koufax, and Carew Christensen, Bailey, Lucy, Ella and Tom Hughes; Cecelia, Elsa and Evelyn Andersen; Tristan, Marissa, Victoria, Alexandria, Sophia, Hollis, Violet and Henry Bode; Cael Hernandez, Bode McDaniel, Katie and Becky Henry, Lillian McBride;and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ronald ‘Ron’ Vance

Ronald “Ron” Vance, 57, of Charles City, died Monday, May 28, 2012, at his home.

Funeral services for Ron Vance will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home. Sister Diana Blong, Pastoral Associate at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery at Floyd.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and an hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Ronald Gene Vance was born July 17, 1954, at Charles City, the son of Clair and Jean (Stock) Vance. He graduated from Charles City High School, where he was on the wrestling team. On Oct. 27, 1973, he married Debra Meek. They later divorced. Ron worked for a brief time at Oliver/White Farm Corporation. He farmed all his life east of Colwell both grain farming and raising all types of livestock. His interests included watching sports, especially wrestling, and he attended the national wrestling tournament yearly. He was an avid fan of the Hawkeyes and Twins. For many years he was the 4-H leader of the Colwell Comets. He enjoyed golfing and will be remembered as someone who could do anything and was willing to help anyone. Ron always looked forward to spending time with and sharing his life with his family. The grandchildren had a special place in his heart and he especially enjoyed watching their sports activities.

Living family members include three children: Michelle “Shelly” (Cory) Anderegg, Scott (Stacey) Vance and Shaun (Kim) Vance, all of Charles City; six grandchildren: Colton and Keely Anderegg, Alyvia, Addyson, Isabelle and Madison Vance; his mother, Jean Vance of Charles City; three brothers: Dennis (Diane) Vance, Duane Vance and Gary (Wendy) Vance, all of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

Thelma M. Reis Mooberry, 90, of Charles City, died Tuesday morning May 29, 2012, at the 11th St. Chautauqua Guest Home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday June 2, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Officiating will be the Rev.

Carl Ries. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Thelma Mae was born on Dec. 16, 1921, at Floyd, the daughter of Theron Virgil and Dora E. “Cole” Jacobson. She graduated with the class of 1939 at the Floyd Consolidated High School. She attended Iowa State University and the Iowa State Teachers College. She was qualified as a teacher, but never entered the profession.

She was united in marriage to John Virgil Reis on Aug. 10, 1940, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The couple then moved to Wichita, Kan., for a few years. They returned to the Charles City area to farm for the next 10 years. Virgil preceded her in death in 1984. She worked at Clark Produce, egg candler for Mike Clark, Townsend Laundry and Cleaners, then in the Fabric Department and finally as manager for Red Owl. During the war, she did her part working as a timekeeper at the Oliver Tractor Plant and Salsbury Home. Thelma was an excellent seamstress, making wedding dresses and doing alterations. She also made many of her and her family’s clothes. During her high school years, she played in the band and that interest followed the rest of her life, playing saxophone and the piano. She had a great voice and loved to sing. She was known to take any recipe and make it yummy — her favorites were chow mein, pinwheel cookies and batch after batch of fudge. No one in need ever missed a meal. In 1993, Thelma married Clint Mooberry at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. They loved to travel, have fun and play cards. He preceded her in death in 1995. Thelma was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Citizens Heritage Club.

Those thankful in sharing Thelma’s long life include her children: Dennis Reis of Hayward, Calif., Jean and her husband Mike Burkhardt of Mankato, Minn.; Cheryl and her husband Harry Gingersky of San Jose, Calif., Barbara and her husband Bruce Buell of Stockton, Calif., and Carmen and her husband Greg Atherton of Fruitland Park, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one brother, Virgil, and his wife Shirley Jacobson of Charles City; step children Bill Mooberry of Charles City, Dale Mooberry of Osage — who helped Thelma in so many ways — Janice Robbins of Ionia and Barbara Lensing of Charles City; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister, along with their spouses.
