Galen E. Miller

GREENE — Funeral services for Galen Miller, 89, of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at The First Presbyterian Church in Greene, with Pastor John Hanna officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. Scripture Service, Sunday night at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. Greene and will continue at the church one hour before services on Monday. Galen was born on Nov. 2, 1923, the son of Zoa Grace Miller and George Washington Miller and died Friday, Nov. 2, 2012 at North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City. Following his father’s death in 1931, he farmed in Bennezette Township, Butler County and graduated from Greene High School in 1940. Upon graduation he attended Iowa State University on a baseball scholarship before returning home to run the family farm.

Galen loved playing fast-pitch softball and played several years for the Barth Chevrolet team. He was a great shortstop with an amazing arm and loved to reminisce about his playing days and his teammates. That amazing arm earned him offers to play professional ball, which he turned down because of his responsibility running the family farm and supporting his family.

Galen met Loretta Janssen in 1953 while both attended Rural Youth. They married on Dec. 14, 1954, in Hampton, Iowa. They became the parents of four children while farming together until Galen’s retirement in 2008. During these years Galen and Loretta were avid bowlers, competing in leagues in Hampton and Greene. He loved and encouraged his children to be involved in many activities and always made the time to attend their school events without fail. He was never too tired or too busy for a game of catch in the yard. He continued to enjoy attending sports and other school events of his grandchildren, becoming an outstanding role model to yet another generation. Galen always modeled hard work, dedication, and honesty while displaying a kind, gentle, humble spirit. He had an unending supply of patience for which we were all grateful. He could always be counted on for a silly joke or lighthearted comment and had a playful demeanor that will live on in the many memories and stories of life with his family. He demonstrated his strength and unwillingness to give up right up until his final breath.

Galen was a real estate broker, first with Miller Real Estate, later Miller and Marsh Real Estate and finally with Miller & Miller Real Estate. He was a member of the Greene School Board and also served as president. Galen was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church while serving as an elder and trustee.

Galen is survived by his loving wife, Loretta of Greene; a daughter, Pam (Kent) Kennedy of DeWitt; a son, Mark (Patti) Miller, of Charles City; and a daughter, Sandy (Jeff) Mouw, of Greene; ten grandchildren, Laura Kennedy, Kathleen (Ryan) Kedley, Andrew Kennedy, Tricia Miller, Eric (fiancé Anna Feller) Miller, Emily Miller, Sara Mouw, David Mouw, Leah Mouw and Daniel Mouw; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, George in 1932; his mother, Zoa in 1982; daughter, Laurie in 1965; brother, Duane and his wife Marian Miller; and sister, Burneile and her husband Duane Wylam.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Galen Miller Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 219, Greene, Iowa 50636 Arrangements have been entrusted to at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene, (641) 823-4457, www.reidsfuneralchapel.com.

Donald Keith Boylan, 79

Donald Keith Boylan, 79, of Long Lake, Minn., and formerly of Charles City, died on Nov. 13, 2012, after contracting pneumonia and having struggled with atypical Parkinsonism for several years.

Donald was born on Aug. 20, 1933, in Charles City. He leaves his wife of 58 years, Bonnie Wulff Boylan, who was born in Floyd; three children, three grandchildren, a great-granddaughter and 11 nieces and nephews.

For 30 years, Don was boys’ basketball coach at Orono High School, west of Minneapolis, where he also taught mathematics and later became the district’s first computer/technology coordinator. In addition, he served as chief teacher negotiator for the Orono Education Association in contract talks.

Don, who was long active in the Calvin Presbyterian Church of Long Lake, was the third son of Irene May Imus Boylan and C. C. (Cliff) Boylan, a teacher and coach in Charles City for more than 30 years. Father and son, in addition to sharing a profession, had similar approaches to students in the classroom — patient, humor and insistent on results. Don also followed in his father’s footsteps when he coached his school’s first cross-country team, much as Cliff Boylan created Charles City’s regional Comet Relays in the 1940s.

Don was a member of basketball, football and track teams at Charles City High School, and played basketball at Grinnell College. He completed his education at the State University of Iowa.

Bonnie Wulff and Don, who were high-school sweethearts, graduated from Charles City High School in the class of 1951. They participated in annual reunions of a group of classmates that have continued for more than 60 years. Bonnie Boylan’s twin sister, Beverly, also married a classmate, Junior Moeller. The Wulff sisters graduated from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids.

Other survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Jodi Cobb Boylan, of Watertown, Minn.; a daughter, Kathleen Boylan, of Bradenton Beach, Fla.; and a daughter and son-in-law, Susan Boylan and Lowell Seashore, of Maple Plain, Minn. In the next generations are grandchildren Katie Walker McNaughton, her husband, John, and their baby daughter, Addley; Andrew Walker; and Erin Boylan. Because of their warmth and concern, several other young people in the area came to consider the Boylans as grandparents.

Two of Don’s three siblings also survive: James Boylan, of New York, and Mary Ann Boylan Bernhard, of Orlando, Fla. Don’s other brother, Dr. Charles E. Boylan, of Bellevue, Wash., died in 1994.

Don’s surviving in-laws are the Moellers, who live in Des Moines; his sister-in-law Sharla Kvidera Boylan Ross, of Sammamish, Wash.; sister-in-law Betsy Wade Boylan, of New York, and brother-in-law Ralph Parker, of Orlando, Fla.

The funeral service was held Nov. 17 at Calvin Presbyterian in Long Lake, and interment will be at a later date in the National Cemetery at Fort Snelling, Minn. Don served in the Army from 1953 to 1955.

Memorials may be sent to the Orono Foundation for Education, Box 124, Maple Plain, Minn., 55359.
