Merlen would share what she had with others of need, especially children. There was many a time she would buy clothing for children, wrap them in newspaper and string then deliver them after dark to a families door step here in Charles City. She loved her garden and spent many hours working in it. She and Clarence loved to antique; they would travel all around the Midwest looking for just the right piece to add to their home. Merlen was very creative with interior home design and could make any home beautiful inside. She enjoyed cross stitching and her children have many of her pieces on display in their homes. Merlen was a fabulous cook and especially enjoyed the holiday season so she could share her talents in the kitchen. She especially loved to picnic with family and friends. She loved her dogs of which she had several over the course of her life. Merlen enjoyed playing 500 with her three regular friends and was very disappointed when she had to give it up. She was known by some to have the creative ability to come up with humorous “one liners” that would make you do belly rolls of laughter. She spent many hours reading her scriptures to help pass away the time. She loved peanut butter and jam, not jelly on her toast and she loved hard candy.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Robert L. Havner of Charles City and Rhonda L. Wilson of Denver, Iowa.; grandchildren: Tennille (Micheal) Fain of Cedar Rapids, Lindsey Wilson of Denver and her special friend Shane Seegers; great-grandchildren Makayla and Elizabeth Fain; many nieces, nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence; both siblings, Beulah Hepner and Willard Koch; brother-in-law, Burdette.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your own church or to Iowa Hospice, 18 E. Main Street, New Hampton, Iowa 50659 (www.iowa-hospice.com).
