William L. Burge

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — William L. (Bill) Burge, (69), of Ballwin, Mo., died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital in St. Louis. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, at Schrader Funeral Home with Msgr. Callahan officiating. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. on Friday before the service. A private burial will be held on Monday, Jan. 31, at Holy Cross Cemetery.

William Lewis Burge was born Oct. 18, 1943, in Charles City, the son of Guy and Georgia (Linter) Burge. He was a 1961 graduate of Charles City High School. He attended the University of Iowa, University of Northern Iowa, University of Indianapolis, and was a graduate of Mason City Junior College (NIACC), Butler University in Indianapolis, and Xavier University in Cincinnati. From 1966-1972, he served as an officer in the Illinois Army National Guard.

On Aug.10, 1968, William was united in marriage to Kathryn Marie Schmidt in Kankakee, Ill. They made their home in many different areas, adapting to his life-long career in sales and marketing of consumer packaged goods. Companies and cities included the Lipton Tea Company (Champaign, Ill.; Indianapolis; Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Cincinnati, Ohio); Paramount Foods (Louisville, Ky.); Lowe’s, Inc. (South Bend, Ind.); United Foods (Modesto, Calif. and Jackson, Tenn.); and Swedish Match Company (St. Louis).

In 1989, he became an owner of Walco-Linck Company (Valley Cottage, N.Y.), manufacturing and marketing TAT brand insecticide products. Preferring to live in the Midwest near his children and grandchildren, he also maintained an office in St. Louis. The company was sold in 2008 and he was employed by the new owner, Homax Corporation, until 2009.

In 2009, choosing work over retirement, he joined a printing company in Ellisville, Mo., where he served in a management role until his retirement in 2010.

Mid-career, Bill was a member of and served on the General Merchandise Advisory Board of the Global Market Development Center. He has also been a member of the Elks, Lions, American Legion and Sales and Marketing Executives International.

His many interests included writing and politics and his work enabled substantial travel, particularly throughout the United States. Perhaps his most notable trait was his sense of humor, as indicated by the fact that he wanted it mentioned in his obituary that he never took himself too seriously, always enjoyed having a good time and had received a haircut in 49 of the 50 United States. (For those wondering: Wyoming!) Bill was particularly fond of his hometown of Charles City, and was an avid collector of Charles City historical memorabilia. Despite leaving there in 1961, and having lived there just briefly during 198586, he always considered Charles City to be his roots and a source of immense pride. More recently, he was the only non-resident of Charles City to be a member of the board of the Charles City Excellence in Education Foundation, a non-profit that provides funding to benefit student learning experiences.

William is survived by his wife, Kathryn; and their two children, Elizabeth (Brian) Leeker, of St. Louis, and William (Ellie) Burge, of Florissant, Mo.; as well as four grandchildren: Scott Leeker, Adam Leeker, and Katie Leeker and Quinn Burge.; along with his brother, Jack (Pat) Burge, of Aurora, Ohio.

At his request, a memorial scholarship will be established at the Charles City Excellence in Education Foundation to provide tuition assistance for children of Charles City school system employees to attend North Iowa Area Community College. Memorials may be directed to the Charles City Excellence in Education Foundation, Office of the Superintendent, 500 N. Grand Ave., Charles City, IA 50616.

Paul Watschke, 94

Paul Watschke, 94, of Charles City, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at the Cedar Health Facility in Charles City.

Funeral services for Paul Watschke will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home. Pastor Jim Beranek of Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, and an hour prior to the service Friday.

Paul Elliott Watschke was born on Sept. 5, 1918, in Charles City. The son of Elmer and Elsie (Schrader) Watschke. He graduated from Rudd High School. On Jan. 1, 1942, he married Beulah May LaCoste of Rudd who preceded him in death on March 9, 1997. On April 25, 1999, he married Bette Gullickson in Charles City. Soon after Paul married Beulah he entered the military service, and was shipped overseas in April of 1944. Paul was a good provider, great parent and mentor, but most of all, he was a devoted and loving person to his family and friends. He rarely complained about anything and cared more for others than himself. He laughed easily and often, which kept him in great spirits and enhanced his well-being. He was a much deeper thinker than most knew about and was extremely perceptive of his surroundings and their meanings. Paul was a member of the Elks Club, Moose Lodge, and the V.F.W. Paul will be greatly missed by those of us who loved and knew him. He is in a better place now and will be held in the highest esteem by our creator, God Almighty. He loved little children, just as Jesus did, and they gave him great joy as he did for them. A man like Paul is never far from one’s heart and mind regardless of where he resides. He has enriched us all by his presence on earth and we are all better people as a result. It is his legacy that we all treat others as he did, with dignity and respect, and to have the good sense to know what is the right thing to do, regardless of our circumstances. As he always said “Never be idle, if you don’t know what to do next, pick up a broom and sweep the floor, at least you will be doing something to help.”

Paul was an avid golfer, always striving to get better, and had a notoriously good short game. He also loved fishing with his buddies at various locations over the years. He was a crafty card player and won most of the time, in spite of the fact that he would say “I never get good cards!”.

Living family members include his wife Bette; three sons: Thomas (Christa) Watschke, of State College, Pa., Douglas (Ginny) Watschke, of New Hope, Minn., and Gary (Nancy) Watschke, of Weare N.H.; one daughter, Colleen (Bruce) Copper, of Charles City; one sister-inlaw, Genevieve Peterson, of Pleasant Valley; 10 grandchildren: Jon, Katelyn, Madison, Brian, Christopher, Jennifer, Beau and Kelley Watschke, and Reagan and Nick Copper; nine great-grandchildren, and four nephews.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Beulah; two sisters, Phyllis and Thaylia; one brother, Blythe; and a nephew.

The Hauser Funeral Home, (641) 228-2323, in Charles City, is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.hauserfh.com.
