Mary Cavozza

Mary Cavozza, 95, of Allison, Iowa, formerly of Staten Island, New York, passed away September 27, 2003 at her daughters home in Bristow, Iowa. Mary was born on March 22, 1908 in Paris, France to Aristede and Filomena (Moglia) Fecci. Mary attended schools in Italy and in New York City. She was married on July 17, 1926 in Staten Island, New York to John Cavozza. Mary was a Pastry Cook at the Hotel Astor. She was a member of the Sylvester’s Catholic Church in Staten Island. Mary enjoyed crocheting, baking, gardening and making afghans for her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter Rena and husband Eldo Kruse of Bristow, Iowa, sister Ida Cuneo of Staten Island, New York, sister Clotilda Baratta of Brookefield, Connecticut; five grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, daughter Ida Saccone and one grandson John Kruse. Funeral services wwill be held in Staten Island, New York, Friday, October 3, 2003. Final resting place will be St. Peter’s Cemetery, Staten Island, New York. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Winifred M. Martin

Winifred M. Martin, 88, of Manchester, died Wednesday, afternoon, September 24, 2003 at Linn Manor Care Center, Marion, Iowa, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 27, 2003, at the Gospel Hall, Manchester, with Robert Orr officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Masonville, Iowa. Winifred was born March 29, 1915, in Coffins Grove Township, Manchester, Iowa, the daughter of Fred C. and Lillian A. (Reed) Kimball. She attended school in Manchester. On March 28, 1928, at the age of 13, Winifred trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. On October 3, 1936, Winifred was united in marriage to John Allen Martin, Sr. in Waterloo, Iowa. The couple moved to Ottumwa, Iowa and then in 1946 moved back to the Manchester area, settling in Coffins Grove Township. In 1976, the couple moved to their home on Doctor Street in Manchester. John died June 18, 1977. Winifred moved to the Good Neighbor Home in February of 2001. Winifred attended the Gospel Hall in Manchester. She was a true homemaker and found joy raising her family. Winifred’s family includes four daughters and their husbands: Sue Ellen and Kenneth Gentz and Linda and Garey Entsminger, all of Manchester, Iowa, Merry Beth and Richard Baker of Rockford, Illinois, and Julie Anne and Allan Kluiter of Clarksville, Iowa; twenty-six grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Lighty of Clarence, New York; two daughters-in-law, Fran Martin and Marlene Ryan, both of Manchester, and one sister-in-law, Jean Watson of Pasco, Washington. Preceding her in death were her parents, Fred C. and Lillian A. Kimball; her husband, John Allen Martin, Sr.; two sons, John Allen Martin, Jr. and Gerald Curtis Martin; two great-grandchildren, Stephanie Martin and Andrew Gentz; and four brothers, Delbert, Robert, Roy and Walter Kimball.


Iris J. Alitz

Iris J. Alitz, 79, of Dumont, Iowa passed away September 20, 2003 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa. She was born August 23, 1924 in Dumont, Iowa to Carl and Hazel (Miller) Stock. Iris graduated from the Dumont High School. She was married to Milton “Bud” Alitz on September 2, 1950 in Aredale. She worked as a Sears Sales Representative in Interior Decorating for twenty years. Iris then moved to Davenport and became an owner of a Country Kitchen, she then later moved back to the area and worked at the Hampton Nursing Home and to take care of her family. She was a member of the Aredale United Methodist Church in Aredale. Iris was also a member of the Women’s Auxiliary Legion Post #360 in Dumont. She enjoyed gardening and taking care of and spending time with her family. She especially had a closeness with her grandchildren. She is survived by her son Mark and wife Lori Alitz of Mason City; son Steven and wife Evette Alitz of Phoenix, Arizona; brother Dale and wife Claire Stock of Dumont; three granddaughters: Sarah Alitz and Holly Alitz, both of Phoenix, Arizona, and Autumn Alitz of Mason City; and grandson Dylan “Bud” Alitz of Mason City. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at the Aredale United Methodist Church with Rev. Terra Amundson and Rev. Chuck Wallace officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Bernice Dietz accom-panying soloist, Ross Zimmerman. The ushers were Steve Kolbach and Robert Knapp, (both friends of Mark). Pallbearers were sons Steven and Mark Alitz, grandson Dylan Alitz, and nephews David Stock and Josh Ott and friend and neighbor Raymond Wickham. Honorary pallbearer was brother Dale Stock. Final resting place was in Oakwood Cemetery in Plymouth, Iowa. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Mildred Irene Rodman

Mildred Irene Rodman, age 96, of Clarksville, Iowa was born the daughter of Arthur and Bertha (McCracken) Thomas on December 5, 1906, rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, near Greene, Iowa. She received her education and graduated from Greene High School in 1925. Following high school she continued one additional year at the Iowa State Teacher College in Cedar Falls, Iowa and obtained her teachers certificate. She taught county school until she was married. On November 29, 1928, Mildred Thomas was united in marriage with Kenneth Rodman at the Charles City church parsonage in Charles City, Iowa. For a short time they lived in Waterloo, Iowa while Kenneth was working at John Deere. They later lived near Greene, Hudson and Clarksville where they farmed until 1970. Upon retirement they moved to town and enjoyed living in Clarksville. In 1997 she became a resident of the Community Nursing Home, Clarksville. Mildred was an active member of the Church of Christ in Clarksville. She also enjoyed many civic organizations. She was a member of the Clarksville Rebekah Lodge and was past Noble Grand, member of the Friendly Neighbor Club, 4-H leader and enjoyed the senior bowling league in Waverly. She always enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grand and great grandchildren. Mildred died on Wednesday, September 24, 2003, at the Community Nursing Home, Clarksville, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Rodman on November 16, 1974; two brothers, Ira Thomas and Lloyd Thomas; and two sisters, Marguerite Ewald and Ruth Ewald. Mildred is survived by one son, Lyle (Kat) Rodman of Clarkamas, Oregon; one daughter, Leona (Mel) Johnson, Allison, Iowa; two grandsons, Jay (Linda) Johnson and Jim (Georgene) Johnson; one granddaughter, Jamie (Clint) Walters; five great grandsons, Jason (Melissa), Jeremy, Justin, Matthew and Marc Johnson; one great granddaughter, Melissa Johnson; two great-great grandchildren, Katelynn and Blake Johnson; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Service were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 27, 2003, Church of Christ, Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor Val Swinton officiating. Organist was Audrey Rosenwinkle and Vocalist was Jill Johnson who sang “The Lords Prayer.” Congregational Hymns were “In The Garden” and “How Great Thou Art.” Honorary Casketbearers were her great grandchildren, Jason Johnson, Jeremy Johnson, Justin Johnson, Matt Johnson, Melissa Johnson and Marc Johnson. Casketbearers were her grandchildren and their spouses, Jay and Linda Johnson, Jamie and Clint Walters and Jim and Georgene Johnson. Interment will be at a later date at Rosehill Cemetery, Greene, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements.


Mary May Huber

Mary May Huber, age 89, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Frank and Phoebe Jenkins Montgomery on February 24, 1914, in Bagley, Iowa. She received her education and graduated from the Bagley High School in 1934. She attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids for two years where she received her teaching certificate. She taught school in Dawson, Iowa for four years. Mary May was united in marriage with Bernard Huber on August 23, 1937 in Vinton, Iowa. After they were married, the couple lived in Allison for eight years. She helped in the clothing store that her husband managed in Allison and after that store closed, they managed the clothing store in Clarksville. The couple eventually owned and operated Huber’s Clothing Store in Clarksville. Bernard died December 3, 1968. The clothing store was sold in 1972 and she was associated with it until 1984. Mary May was a member of Community United Methodist Church in Clarksville where she served as organist, Sunday School Superintendent, and was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Mariners Group. She was a church representative at the Presbyterian Senate Meeting and served on the Senate Board. Mary May was on the original board for the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville and had served on the board of the Community Retirement Village of Clarksville. She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star and the P.E.O. In her early years, she had been a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. She loved to play golf and enjoyed music. Mary May died Saturday, September 27, 2003, at Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard in 1968; her parents; three brothers and two sisters. She is survived by one son, Patrick Huber, Clarksville, Iowa; one granddaughter, Heather (Maurice) Cogdell and three great-grandchildren, Julia, Brandon and Luke. A Graveside Service was held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa. Officiating was Pastor Allen Poore-Christensen of the Community United Methodist Church, Clarksville. Casketbearers were David Clark, Leo Wedeking, Glen Whiteside, Everett Hidlebaugh, Roger Negen and Ken Vance. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the church.



 Janet R. Duffield Bullock

A Funeral Mass for Janet R. Duffield Bullock, 62, of Greene was held Tuesday, September 30, 2003, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene, with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial was in the St. Mary¹s Cemetery in Greene. Janet Ruth Heyenga was born September 11, 1941, in Allison, a daughter of John Edwin and Ruth Johanna (Barth) Heyenga, and died Saturday, September 27, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa, Mason City. She received her education and graduated from the Greene High School in 1959. She was united in marriage to Donald Francis Duffield, in July, 1960, at the Duffield family home in Greene. They made their home in Greene where she was employed by the United Telephone Co. On January 5, 1974, she was united in marriage to Michael Harry Bullock at Elk Point, S.D. They made their home on an acreage west of Greene. Janet worked for Lois¹ Upholstery for many years and also was employed by Davis Buy Low Self Serve both in Greene. Janet and Mike were local representatives for Diamond Vogel Paint. Janet will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, whose paramount concern was for her family’s welfare. She was a tremendous cook, who enjoyed making and baking things for her family. She enjoyed crocheting and ceramics. Family memories include her and Don’s love for music, and the fishing and camping trips with Mike and the family. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Living family members include her children: John (Jennifer) Duffield of Greene, Don Duffield of Cookville, TN, Joe Bullock of Anaheim, CA, and Michael “Buzz” Bullock of Greene; six grandchildren: Jacob Duffield, Johanna Duffield, Christopher Michael Bullock, Jerid Duffield, Gage Duffield, and Kaitlyn Duffield; a sister JoAnn (Darwin) Shreve of Marble Rock; and two aunts: Myrtle Shapley, and Leola Ekwall, both of Greene; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands: Don Duffield on November 17, 1966; and Michael Bullock on December 27, 2001; her two daughters: Loretta Lynn Duffield on March 6, 1963, and Teresa Ann Duffield on July 2, 1972. Harvey Louis Harberts

Harvey Louis Harberts, age 88, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of John and Hannah (Casjens) Harberts on November 29, 1914, in rural Grundy County near Holland, Iowa. He received his education from the Country Schoolhouse Beaver #4 in Grundy County. Harvey was united in marriage with Reka Tjebkes on March 10, 1941, in the Coster Christian Reformed Church Parsonage. Harvey was inducted into the United States Army on December 16, 1942. He served with the Medical Detachment of the 706th Tank Destroyer Battalion in Paris, Texas. He was honorable discharge in February 17, 1944, and returned to Iowa where he and Reka made their home in Parkersburg. Harvey worked at Viking Pump in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in the Tool Crib. He retired after 26 years with Viking Pump. Harvey had previously worked as a farm hand, trucker, and a mechanic for a farm implement dealer. Harvey was a member of the Reformed Church of Stout and had sung with the men’s choir. He was a lifetime member of the Parkersburg American Legion Post # 285. He was Butler County Volunteer of the year in 1990, and served with the Historical House restoration in Parkersburg. Harvey enjoyed lunch with his friends at the senior center in Parkersburg. He especially enjoyed singing with the Silver Beaver Singing Group. Harvey died Thursday, October 2, 2003, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. He was preceded in death by his wife, Reka Harberts, November 29, 1972, his parents, one brother, Dick Harberts, and one son-in-law, Robert Berry. Harvey is survived by: one daughter, Brenda (Harlan) Hempen, Cedar Falls, Iowa; three grandchildren, Tracy (Dan) West, Neil (Traci) Berry, and Robert Berry; seven great grandchildren, Bob, Megan, Danielle, Adam, John, Jack and Justin, one brother, Orville Harberts, New Hartford, Iowa, and one sister-in-law, Vella Harberts, Garnavillo, Iowa. Funeral Services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 6, 2003, at the Reformed Church of Stout with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg, Iowa with Pastor David H. Powers officiating. Organist was Elaine Schnell. Vocalist Bill Quibell sang “In the Garden Medley” and “The Anchor Holds.” Congregational Hymn was “Amazing Grace. Casketbearers were Arlyn Harberts, Merrill Harberts, Gaylen Harberts, Dan West, Neil Berry and Bob Berry. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Military Rites were provided by Parkersburg American Legion Post #285. Memorials maybe directed to the family and to the church. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements.


Alfred Heuer

Alfred Heuer, 92, of Allison died Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 11, at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church at Vilmar, rural Greene, with Pastor Mark Walker officiating. Visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 10 at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene. Jay L. Jewell

Graveside services for Jay L. Jewell, 89, of Oceanside California, formerly of Greene, will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 17, 2003, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene with Pastor Ashok Patet officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene. Jay Laverne Jewell was born January 18, 1914 in Kansas City, Missouri, a son of Jay Cornelius and Lura (Emery) Jewell, and died Sunday, October 5, 2003 at the Tri City Medical Center in Oceanside, California. Nelda G. Hassman

Nelda G. Hassman, 84, of Clarksville, passed away on Friday, October 3, 2003 at the Waverly Municipal Hospital in Waverly. Nelda was born on February 19, 1919, the daughter of Arthur E. and Ida Mae (Conley) Myrick near Spencer, Iowa in Clay County. She attended school in Spirit Lake and graduated from Terril High School in 1937. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1939 with a teaching degree. Following her education, she taught country school near Terril and also at Webb. During W.W.II she worked at a defense plant in Kansas City. On February 20, 1943, she was united in marriage to Vernon Hassman at the Little Brown Church in Nashua and they farmed in the New Hartford/Parkersburg area. In 1952, they moved to the Clarksville/Plainfield area, where they purchased their farm and presently resided. Nelda helped start the Kindergarten program in Plainfield in 1953. From 1960-62, she taught in Denver and also did some substitute teaching in area schools. Through the years she continued to help in their farming operation. As a young girl, Nelda was a 4-H member and was awarded a trip to the Iowa State Fair. Over the years she was President of Farm Bureau Women, served on the County Extension Council, was President of the Plainfield P.T.A., President of Plainfield Music Boosters, President of the Federated Women’s Club and was a Cub Scout Den Mother. Nelda and Vernon traveled and cruised all over the world for the past 30 years. Nelda enjoyed reading about and planning their trips and spending time with her family. Nelda accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior on May 3, 1992 at the age of 73 and was baptized and joined the First Baptist church in Waverly. Survivors include her husband Vernon of Clarksville; children: Vernelle (George) Malven of Maynard, Gaylen (Lynda) Hassman of Waverly, and Lynae (Glenn) Stech of Waterloo; 7 grandchildren: Anthony (Bonnie) Malven, Timothy (Paige) Malven, Trenton Malven, Nikki (Adam) Anders, Cameron Hassman, Traci (Scott) Semp-timphelter, and Shane (Heather) Stech; 8 great grandchildren; 2 sisters: Bernice Lloyd of Spirit Lake and Nadine Burgeson of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; and by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters: Irene Tritle, Helen Myrick and Neva Wilson, and 2 brothers: Ralph and Darwin Myrick. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at the First Baptist Church, Waverly, Iowa with Pastor Brian L. Wilkins officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Marlys Swinton accom-panying the soloist, Bruce Swinton and the duet of Pastor Brian and Joyce Wilkins and the con-gregational singing. Casketbearers were Nikki Anders, Anthony Malven, Trenton Malven, Cameron Hassman, Timothy Malven, Shane Stech and Traci Semptimphelter. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa with Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Marlys Elaine Lord

Marlys Elaine Lord, 74, of Allison, Iowa passed away October 2, 2003 at the Allison Care Center in Allison, Iowa. Marlys was born on December 31, 1928 in Greene, Iowa to Clyde and Tillie (Tiemens) Lord. Marlys attended Aredale Schools. She grew up farming with her parents and was a member of the Bennezette Wesleyan Church in rural Bristow, Iowa. Marlys enjoyed crocheting, making peanut brittle, selling items at Flea Markets and visiting with people. She is survived by her niece Sandy and husband Ronald Conley of Syersville, Kentucky, niece LouAnn and husband Bernard Seibert of Greene, Iowa, three great nieces, one great nephew and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Dean. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 6, 2003 at the Bennezette Wesleyan Church, rural Aredale with Rev. Tim McGuire officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Sue McGuire accom-panying the congregational singing. Pallbearers were Burton Sprole, Vern Bushbaum, Duane Tiemens, Warren Davison, LaVern Schurman and Dan Lunstrum. Final resting place was in Oak Hill Cemetery, rural Bristow with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Henry E. Hoodjer

Henry E. Hoodjer, 97, of Allison, Iowa, formerly of Clarksville passed away Septmeber 29, 2003 at the Allison Care Center in Allison, Iowa. Henry was born on December 20, 1905 in Butler County, Iowa to John C. and Dena (Henrichs) Hoodjer. Henry attended rural Butler County Schools. He was a farmer all his life, and after retirement Henry bought and trained racing colts. He was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. Henry is survived by his four nephews and seven nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and six brothers. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 2, 2003 at the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with Rev. Jerry Laehn officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Vivian Green accom-panying soloist, Dean Uhlenhopp. Pallbearers were Merle Hoodjer, Lynn Poppen, Tom Hoogestraat, Troy Dralle, Robert Hoodjer and DeWayne Fasse. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Judith Dreyer

Judith Dreyer, age 93, of Aplington, Iowa, was born April 7, 1910, the daughter of Ben and Serina Clovning Stevenson, in Radcliff, Iowa. She graduated from Radcliff High School in 1928. She continued her education for a year at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota and then a second year at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, earning a Teaching Certificate. Judy taught school in Randall, Iowa and later in Aplington. Judy was united in marriage with Lawrence Dreyer on June 29, 1939, at the farm of her brother in Randall, Iowa. Judy and Lawrence made their home in Aplington and she became a homemaker. She was a member of Aplington Baptist Church where she was active in Summer Bible School, Benevolent Society and various children’s ministries. Judy was a charter member of the Aplington Women’s Club. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, playing card games, high school and college sports, golf and bowling. She looked forward to the family vacations to northern Minnesota and very much enjoyed spending time with her grandsons. Judy died Friday, September 26, 2003, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Dreyer, April 18, 1999; two daughters, Martha Sue Burgus and in infancy, Mary Lorraine Dreyer; two brothers, Alfred and Martin Stevenson; two half-sisters, Mayme Stevenson and Hannah Tawzer and one half-brother, Selmer Stevenson. She is survived by two daughters, Carol (Jim) Schuttinga, Annandale, Virginia, and Connie Dreyer, St. Paul, Minnesota and three grandsons, Andy and Aaron Burgus and Daniel (Ursula) Schuttinga. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 1, 2003 at the Aplington Baptist Church, Aplington, Iowa with Pastor Dan Smith and Rev. Don Patet officiating. Organist was Cami Haugstad and Soloist was Joyce Frey who sang “Whispering Hope.” Congregational Hymns were “Fairest Lord Jesus” and “When We All Get To Heaven.” Casketbearers were Andy Burgus, Dale Janssen, Daniel Schuttinga, Jim Lindaman, Aaron Burgus and Howard Huisinga. Flower Committee was Ivan and Fay Lindaman and Rachael Beetner. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.

A Funeral Mass for Genevieve Stabenow, 98, Greene, was held Thursday, October 2, 2003, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial was in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Greene. Genevieve Stanton was born June 4, 1905 in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, a daughter of Michael and Theresa (Downing) Stanton and died Saturday, September 27, 2003, at her home in Greene. She received her education in the country school until the fourth grade and then attended Sacred Heart Academy until the eleventh grade and graduated from the Greene High School in 1923. She taught in the Butler County rural schools until her marriage. On February 10, 1926 she was united in marriage to William Stabenow at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene. They moved to the family farm where she worked side by side with her husband until they retired to a home that Bill helped build in Greene. Genevieve was a life long member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene, St. Jude’s Circle, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, charter member of the West Side Sewing Circle, and a former member of the Jenny Wilder Teachers Club. She enjoyed playing bridge and belonged to several clubs. She took great pleasure in cooking for her family and friends. She saw to it that you never went away hungry. She gave her family unconditional love and was accepting of any changes in her life. Her motto was “Peace at any Price”. Those thankful for having shared her life include her two daughters: Evelyn Stabenow and Rita (Richard) Merfeld all of Greene; a niece Carla (Michael) Phalen of Cedar Falls who was raised with the family; three grandchildren: Michael Merfeld of Greene, Theresa (Brook) Vickery of Rosemount, MN, and David (Lynne) Merfeld of Walla Walla, WA; seven great grandchildren: Zachary, Trent, Tyler Merfeld of Greene, Rachel, Mark, and Jenna Vickery of Rosemount, MN, Jordan Merfeld of Seattle, WA; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband on January 6, 1984; her parents, two sisters: Catherine Merfeld and Marie Gales, and one brother: Ambrose Stanton. Mildred Willeke

Mildred Willeke, age 93, of Aplinton, Iowa, was born the daughter of Charles Willeke and Tillie Spieker Willeke on December 11, 1909, in the home built by her father in 1904 on Nash Street, Aplington, Iowa, where she lived nearly to the end of her life on October 9, 2003. After graduating from Aplington High School, she enrolled in the Mounds-Midway School of Nursing, St. Paul, Minnesota. She became a Registered Nurse in 1928 and worked in St. Paul, Minneapolis and, during World War II, in the Des Moines Munitions Plant. After her brother, Howard, was killed in the invasion of Guam on July 21, 1944, she returned to Aplington to care for her aging parents, and to work as a partner in the family firm of Charles Willeke & Sons. Mildred served for many years as the School Nurse for the Aplington, Parkersburg and New Hartford Public Schools, and was a familiar figure for decades of Butler County school children. As a life-long member of the Aplington Baptist Church, Mildred served many years as a beloved Sunday School teacher, Church Clerk, co-leader of the Girls’ Guild and Baptist Youth Fellowship, Church Choir member, and in many other capacities. Her knowledge of the Bible, achieved through many decades of careful study, was legendary. She was particularly devoted to the mission work of the North American Baptist General Conference, and counted a number of North American Baptist Missionary Nurses as her close friends, including Laura Reddig and Margaret Kittlitz. Mildred loved music, played the piano well, and loved to garden until advancing age limited her efforts. Many Aplington residents remember her rose garden, which gave her great joy. Mildred died Thursday, October 9, 2003, at Maple Manor Care Center from natural causes. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Leonard and Irvin and their spouses, Ruth and Gladys, and her brother Howard. She is survived by six nieces and nephews and six great nieces and nephews, all of whom have fond memories of being cared for through many illnesses by “Aunt Mildred, our nurse”. For them, the touch of her skilled hand on a fevered forehead was the beginning of healing. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, October 13, 2003, at the Aplington Baptist Church with burial in the Pleasant View Cemetery both in Aplington. Officiating were Pastor Dan Smith and Rev. Donald Patet. Organist was Cami Haugstad. Congregational Hymns were “Be Still My Soul,” “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken” and “O That Will Be Glory.” Casketbearers were Elvin Uhlenhopp, Dale Janssen, Howard Huisinga, Larry Lindeman, Ivan Lindaman and Robert Frey. Memorials: directed to the Baptist Japan Short Term Mission. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington charge of arrangements.


Harvey Louis Harberts

Harvey Louis Harberts, age 88, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of John and Hannah (Casjens) Harberts on November 29, 1914, in rural Grundy County near Holland, Iowa. He received his education from the Country Schoolhouse Beaver #4 in Grundy County. Harvey was united in marriage with Reka Tjebkes on March 10, 1941, in the Coster Christian Reformed Church Parsonage. Harvey was inducted into the United States Army on December 16, 1942. He served with the Medical Detachment of the 706th Tank Destroyer Battalion in Paris, Texas. He was honorable discharge in February 17, 1944, and returned to Iowa where he and Reka made their home in Parkersburg. Harvey worked at Viking Pump in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in the Tool Crib. He retired after 26 years with Viking Pump. Harvey had previously worked as a farm hand, trucker, and a mechanic for a farm implement dealer. Harvey was a member of the Reformed Church of Stout and had sung with the men’s choir. He was a lifetime member of the Parkersburg American Legion Post # 285. He was Butler County Volunteer of the year in 1990, and served with the Historical House restoration in Parkersburg. Harvey enjoyed lunch with his friends at the senior center in Parkersburg. He especially enjoyed singing with the Silver Beaver Singing Group. Harvey died Thursday, October 2, 2003, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. He was preceded in death by his wife, Reka Harberts, November 29, 1972, his parents, one brother, Dick Harberts, and one son-in-law, Robert Berry. Harvey is survived by: one daughter, Brenda (Harlan) Hempen, Cedar Falls, Iowa; three grandchildren, Tracy (Dan) West, Neil (Traci) Berry, and Robert Berry; seven great grandchildren, Bob, Megan, Danielle, Adam, John, Jack and Justin, one brother, Orville Harberts, New Hartford, Iowa, and one sister-in-law, Vella Harberts, Garnavillo, Iowa. Funeral Services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 6, 2003, at the Reformed Church of Stout with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg, Iowa with Pastor David H. Powers officiating. Organist was Elaine Schnell. Vocalist Bill Quibell sang “In the Garden Medley” and “The Anchor Holds.” Congregational Hymn was “Amazing Grace. Casketbearers were Arlyn Harberts, Merrill Harberts, Gaylen Harberts, Dan West, Neil Berry and Bob Berry. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Military Rites were provided by Parkersburg American Legion Post #285. Memorials maybe directed to the family and to the church. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements.

Alfred Heuer, 92, of Allison died Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 11, at St. John’s Ev. Jay Laverne Jewell was born January 18, 1914 in Kansas City, Missouri, a son of Jay Cornelius and Lura (Emery) Jewell, and died Sunday, October 5, 2003 at the Tri City Medical Center in Oceanside, California. Nelda G. Hassman

 

Nelda G. Hassman, 84, of Clarksville, passed away on Friday, October 3, 2003 at the Waverly Municipal Hospital in Waverly. Nelda was born on February 19, 1919, the daughter of Arthur E. and Ida Mae (Conley) Myrick near Spencer, Iowa in Clay County. She attended school in Spirit Lake and graduated from Terril High School in 1937. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1939 with a teaching degree. Following her education, she taught country school near Terril and also at Webb. During W.W.II she worked at a defense plant in Kansas City. On February 20, 1943, she was united in marriage to Vernon Hassman at the Little Brown Church in Nashua and they farmed in the New Hartford/Parkersburg area. In 1952, they moved to the Clarksville/Plainfield area, where they purchased their farm and presently resided. Nelda helped start the Kindergarten program in Plainfield in 1953. From 1960-62, she taught in Denver and also did some substitute teaching in area schools. Through the years she continued to help in their farming operation. As a young girl, Nelda was a 4-H member and was awarded a trip to the Iowa State Fair. Over the years she was President of Farm Bureau Women, served on the County Extension Council, was President of the Plainfield P.T.A., President of Plainfield Music Boosters, President of the Federated Women’s Club and was a Cub Scout Den Mother. Nelda and Vernon traveled and cruised all over the world for the past 30 years. Nelda enjoyed reading about and planning their trips and spending time with her family. Nelda accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior on May 3, 1992 at the age of 73 and was baptized and joined the First Baptist church in Waverly. Survivors include her husband Vernon of Clarksville; children: Vernelle (George) Malven of Maynard, Gaylen (Lynda) Hassman of Waverly, and Lynae (Glenn) Stech of Waterloo; 7 grandchildren: Anthony (Bonnie) Malven, Timothy (Paige) Malven, Trenton Malven, Nikki (Adam) Anders, Cameron Hassman, Traci (Scott) Semp-timphelter, and Shane (Heather) Stech; 8 great grandchildren; 2 sisters: Bernice Lloyd of Spirit Lake and Nadine Burgeson of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; and by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters: Irene Tritle, Helen Myrick and Neva Wilson, and 2 brothers: Ralph and Darwin Myrick. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at the First Baptist Church, Waverly, Iowa with Pastor Brian L. Wilkins officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Marlys Swinton accom-panying the soloist, Bruce Swinton and the duet of Pastor Brian and Joyce Wilkins and the con-gregational singing. Marlys Elaine Lord

 

Marlys Elaine Lord, 74, of Allison, Iowa passed away October 2, 2003 at the Allison Care Center in Allison, Iowa. Marlys was born on December 31, 1928 in Greene, Iowa to Clyde and Tillie (Tiemens) Lord. Marlys attended Aredale Schools. She grew up farming with her parents and was a member of the Bennezette Wesleyan Church in rural Bristow, Iowa. Marlys enjoyed crocheting, making peanut brittle, selling items at Flea Markets and visiting with people. She is survived by her niece Sandy and husband Ronald Conley of Syersville, Kentucky, niece LouAnn and husband Bernard Seibert of Greene, Iowa, three great nieces, one great nephew and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Dean. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 6, 2003 at the Bennezette Wesleyan Church, rural Aredale with Rev. Tim McGuire officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Sue McGuire accom-panying the congregational singing. Pallbearers were Burton Sprole, Vern Bushbaum, Duane Tiemens, Warren Davison, LaVern Schurman and Dan Lunstrum. Final resting place was in Oak Hill Cemetery, rural Bristow with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Henry E. Hoodjer

 

Henry E. Hoodjer, 97, of Allison, Iowa, formerly of Clarksville passed away Septmeber 29, 2003 at the Allison Care Center in Allison, Iowa. Henry was born on December 20, 1905 in Butler County, Iowa to John C. and Dena (Henrichs) Hoodjer. Henry attended rural Butler County Schools. He was a farmer all his life, and after retirement Henry bought and trained racing colts. He was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. Henry is survived by his four nephews and seven nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and six brothers. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 2, 2003 at the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with Rev. Jerry Laehn officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Vivian Green accom-panying soloist, Dean Uhlenhopp. Pallbearers were Merle Hoodjer, Lynn Poppen, Tom Hoogestraat, Troy Dralle, Robert Hoodjer and DeWayne Fasse. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


 Judith Dreyer

 

Judith Dreyer, age 93, of Aplington, Iowa, was born April 7, 1910, the daughter of Ben and Serina Clovning Stevenson, in Radcliff, Iowa. She graduated from Radcliff High School in 1928. She continued her education for a year at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota and then a second year at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, earning a Teaching Certificate. Judy taught school in Randall, Iowa and later in Aplington. Judy was united in marriage with Lawrence Dreyer on June 29, 1939, at the farm of her brother in Randall, Iowa. Judy and Lawrence made their home in Aplington and she became a homemaker. She was a member of Aplington Baptist Church where she was active in Summer Bible School, Benevolent Society and various children’s ministries. Judy was a charter member of the Aplington Women’s Club. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, playing card games, high school and college sports, golf and bowling. She looked forward to the family vacations to northern Minnesota and very much enjoyed spending time with her grandsons. Judy died Friday, September 26, 2003, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Dreyer, April 18, 1999; two daughters, Martha Sue Burgus and in infancy, Mary Lorraine Dreyer; two brothers, Alfred and Martin Stevenson; two half-sisters, Mayme Stevenson and Hannah Tawzer and one half-brother, Selmer Stevenson. She is survived by two daughters, Carol (Jim) Schuttinga, Annandale, Virginia, and Connie Dreyer, St. Paul, Minnesota and three grandsons, Andy and Aaron Burgus and Daniel (Ursula) Schuttinga. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 1, 2003 at the Aplington Baptist Church, Aplington, Iowa with Pastor Dan Smith and Rev. Don Patet officiating. Organist was Cami Haugstad and Soloist was Joyce Frey who sang “Whispering Hope.” Congregational Hymns were “Fairest Lord Jesus” and “When We All Get To Heaven.” Casketbearers were Andy Burgus, Dale Janssen, Daniel Schuttinga, Jim Lindaman, Aaron Burgus and Howard Huisinga. Alfred Herman Heuer, 92, of Allison, died Tuesday, October 7 at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville. He was born near Greene, Iowa, on May 22, 1911 to Edward C. Heuer and Wilhemina (Minnie) Schrage Heuer. Mr. Heuer is survived by his wife of 67 years, Anna Marie Voigts Heuer; five children: Edith (Wendall) Oltmann of Cedar Falls, Mary Roark of Naples, FL, Janice (Roger) Loyson of Norwalk, Joyce (Carei) Thomas of Minneapolis, MN, and Don (Joan) Heuer of Allison; nine grandchildren: Cynthia Oltmann Nedoba of Omaha, NE, Brett (Susan) Langfritz of Allison, Teresa Langfritz (Steve) Holton of Papillion, NE, Cathy Oltmann (Dan) Hones of Pella, Lisa Roark of Charlotte, NC, Michael Roark of Buffalo, NY, Andrea Langfritz (Robert) Joss of Des Moines, Erin Heuer of Ankeny, and Lucas Heuer of Cedar Falls; ten great-grandchildren: Alyssa Lang-fritz (Joey) Endelman, April Langfritz, Tristan Holton, Alison Holton, Michael Holton, Joshua Hones, Caitlyn Hones, Benjamin Hones, Sam Joss, Jacob Joss; great-great grandson, Jack Langfritz; his sister Lorena Landers, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandchild, Cara Oltmann, his parents, his brother William, and his sisters Ella Landers, Mylinda Mosher, Leona Landers, and Lucille Heuer. Alfred Heuer farmed for 50 years in the Greene and Bristow communities. After retirement from the farm in 1977, he worked at the Wehrhan-Henrichs Hardware Store until 1983. Mr. Heuer enjoyed games with family and friends, fishing, working with horses, and refinishing furniture. He was devoted to his family and to his church, where he had been baptized, confirmed, married, and had served as a deacon. A funeral service was conducted by Rev. Mark Walker at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Vilmar, on October 11, with Mr. Heuer’s grandchildren serving as pall bearers. Burial was in the South Vilmar Cemetery, with Reid Funeral Home of Greene in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church and sent to the family at P.O. Box 614, Allison, Iowa 50602

Mahlon Royal Woodley

Mahlon Royal Woodley, 72, of Macon, MO, died Thursday, October 16, 2003 at the Loch Haven Nursing Home in Macon, MO. Memorial services were conducted at Crossroads Christian Church in Macon, MO at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 18th. Also a second Memorial Service was held at the Church of Christ, Bristow, IA at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 20th. Inurnment was at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Bristow, IA. Mahlon was survived by his wife Violet, two children, Jon and wife, Linda of Gladstone, OR and Maroy and wife, Sheryl of Aplington, IA; one brother, Darland and wife, Clara of Willow Springs, MO; six grandchildren, Christopher, Jamie, Deanna, Jennifer, Kanne, and Afton; four stepchildren: Angela, Cherie, Pamela, and Timothy, and their families; one niece, Darla and one nephew, Clark and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents.


Grace Gersema

Grace Gersema, age 85, of Shell Rock, Iowa, was born the daughter of George & Malena (Behrends) Feckers on September 17, 1918, in Delton Twp., Cottonwood County, Minnesota. She received her education from the rural schools of Butler County, Iowa near her home. On October 1, 1941, Grace was united in marriage with Henry Gersema at the Parsonage of the Christian Reformed Church in Parkersburg, Iowa by the Rev. K. Tebben. The couple worked for Bill Lahr on a farm southwest of Shell Rock for five years before moving to the Hoyt Elliott farm on the south edge of Shell Rock in 1946, where they farmed until their retirement in 1988. In 1985, Henry & Grace moved into Shell Rock but continued to farm the land until Henry’s health failed. Henry died on November 27, 1997 and Grace continued to live in her home until she was taken to the Waverly Hospital on October 3 where she passed away at 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2003, from complications of cancer. Grace accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior 21 years ago and followed the Lord in believers baptism at the age of 82. She was then united with the membership of the Ridgeway Bethel Baptist Church in Waterloo where she has been an active member since that time. Grace is survived by her 5 children and their spouses, Larry & Rose Marie Gersema of Shell Rock, Iowa, Lanora & Robert Miller of Galena, Illinois, Leroy & Dott Gersema of Allison, Iowa, Sharon & Larry Fox of Warrenton, Missouri, and Rick Gersema of Parkersburg, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 14 great great grandchildren; 5 step-great grandchildren; one brother, Fred (Minnie) Feckers of Clarksville, Iowa; 3 sisters, Margaret (Edward) Smith of Parkersburg, Iowa, Sena DeVries of Aplington, Iowa, Marie Arends of Clarence, Iowa; and one sister-in-law, Darlene Feckers of Cedar Falls, Iowa; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry in 1997, one sister, Sena Feckers, four brothers, Claus, Henry, Richard and Willie and two half-brothers, George Feckers Gerdes and Dirk Feckers. Celebration of Life Services were held on Saturday, October 18, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, with Pastor Richard Achey officiating. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock. Vera LaRae Hinders

Vera LaRae Hinders, age 81, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born February 18, 1922, the daughter of Ray and Hazel Coplen Loomis near Clarksville in rural Butler County, Iowa. She received her education in Clarksville schools. She was united in marriage with Pete B. Hinders on September 2, 1940. The couple made their home in Clarksville where Vera was a homemaker. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where she was active in Martha’s Circle. She volunteered with Congregate Meals in Clarksville. She was known for her great cooking and always had coffee and cookies for friends and neighbors who would stop by her home. She had a special soft spot in her heart for children and animals. Vera died at her home in Clarksville on Friday, October 17, 2003. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete Hinders, her parents; one brother, Lawrence Loomis; two sons-in-law, Dale Laughridge and Frank Johnson and one grandson, Jerry Clark in 2000. Vera is survived by four daughters, Tudy (Ed) Cramer, Connie (Roger) Clark and Wanda (Mike) Diesburg, all of Clarksville and Linda Johnson, Waverly; 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Fern Carroll, Waterloo and Laverna (Robert) Jacobs, Clarksville. Funeral Service was at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 21, 2003, at St. John Lutheran Church, Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor David Nelson officiating. The Organist was Lola Clark, the Congregational Hymns were “Old Rugged Cross” and “Amazing Grace” and Special Music “Whispering Hope” was played. The Casketbearers were John Cramer, Chris Cramer, Ryan Cramer, Tony Clark, David Clark, Larry Clark, Trinity Poland and Clint Laughridge. The Honorary Casketbearers were Richard Wright, Eric Laughridge, Tom Diesburg, Robert Hobson, Todd Poland and Scott Lahmann. The Flower Committee was Jessica Clark, Robin Cramer, Becky Cramer and Kim Diesburg. Interment was at Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Henry G. Kromminga

Henry G. Kromminga, 82, of Aplington, Iowa passed away Sunday, October 19, 2003 at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley, Iowa. Henry George Kromminga was born on April 18, 1921 on the family farm in Washington Township to John and Grace (Mulder) Kromminga. He was married to Lenora Jane Muller on November 26, 1942 in the Austinville Christian Reformed Church in Austinville, Iowa. Henry was active in community and church activities. He was a farmer all his life and was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Austinville and a member of Farm Bureau. Survivors include three sons: Arlen Kromminga and his wife Carol of Ackley, Kevin Kromminga and his wife Linda of Eldora, and Delwyn Kromminga of Aplington; a daughter Belinda (Kromminga) and her husband Art Dutcher of Denver, CO; three grandchildren: Gaylen Kromminga of Morton, IL, Lisa Jeske of Minneapolis, MN, and Pamela de Neui and her husband Dale of Dunkerton; three great grandchildren: Amanda, Cassandra, and Abby de Neui of Dunkerton; and three sisters: Anna Mae Buseman of Aplington, Marion Harken of Parkersburg, and Julia Johnson of Parkersburg. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lenora Kromminga and a son Wendell Kromminga. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 22, 2003 at the Christian Reformed Church in Austinville with Rev. George McGuire officiating. Burial was in the Austinville Cemetery with Sietsema Funeral Home of Ackley in charge of arrangements.


Charlotte H. “Lottie” Gersema

Funeral services for Charlotte H. “Lottie” Gersema, 98, of Marble Rock were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 22, 2003, at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock with Pastor Kenneth Kent officiating. Burial was in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City. Charlotte Hattie Abben was born June 17, 1905 in rural Ackley, Hardin County, a daughter of Derk and Gepke (Diddens) Abben, and died Friday, October 17, 2003 at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs. She was united in marriage to Wierd Gersema on October 15, 1924 at Faith Lutheran Church in Charles City. Wierd and Lottie worked together for farmers in the Greene area until 1927, when they started farming on their own east of Greene. They remained there for 17 years until they moved to Ulster Township in Floyd County where they farmed for 30 years before retiring in 1974 and moving into Marble Rock. Residing in Marble Rock for the past thirty years, she was actively involved in the Methodist Church and Senior Citizens Club. Lottie’s greatest enjoyment were her many friends. A special treat were the neighborhood children who visited her. Her immediate family was most precious to her. She was greatly loved by all who knew her, and will be missed forevermore. Those thankful for having shared her life include her children: Ann (Lawrence) Bohlen of Coolidge, AZ, Lawrence W. (Nina) Gersema of El Paso, TX, Dale R. (Pat) Gersema of Lubbock, TX; her grandchildren: Shari Bohlen, Nila Newton, Cindi Haley, Jan Copeland, Sandra St. Germain, and David Howe; twelve great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; and one sister: Effie Abben of Waterloo. She was preceded in death by her husband Wierd Gersema on November 22, 1995, two grandsons: Kenneth D. Gersema and Douglas R. Gersema; her parents, five brothers: Dick, Ed, Ralph, Ben Gephard; and five sisters: Hattie, Geraldine, Minnie, Johanna, and Kathryn. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Lottie Gersema Memorial Fund in care of the family. Reid’s Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

LaVonne Renfrow

LaVonne was born on June 12, 1923 and went to be with our Lord on October 22, 2003. LaVonne “Bess” was the second born to Mitchell R. Doty and Ida Ellen Metcalf Doty at Clarksville, Iowa. Her siblings included: Ida Ellen (Mrs. Ivan Clikeman), Beverly (Mrs. Gordon Stevenson), Donna (Mrs. Berman Knight), Mitchell Emerson and wife Betty; Jeonette (Mrs. Richard Hanson)), Ronald and wife Marlene; Donald Wayne and wife Dolly and Kay (Mrs. Douglas Meyer). LaVonne graduated from Clarks-ville High School. She was active in band, chorus and school plays. She attended classes at Iowa State Teachers College and received a teachers certificate. She went with her sister Beverly to Beloit, Wisconsin during WWII and they trained at a boys college to be shop directors working for the Navy Dept. at Fairbanks Morris Plant that made motors and parts for ships for 2 years. They next worked 1 1/2 years in the Naval Civil Service inspecting K-fuses. Mom said she saved every other pay check and Bev and her were still able to send care packages. LaVonne and Beverly then moved to Decorah, Iowa. LaVonne worked at Peter Johnson’s Plumbing and Heating where she met Lowell. In 1946 she was married to Lowell Gordon Williams who died on August 9th, 1959. To this marriage two children were born Kay (Mrs. Steven Stroh) in 1947 and Gail Ann in 1948. Lowell set up his own plumbing and heating business. When Lowell became ill, LaVonne ironed and baby-sat. She sewed privately and for several Decorah clothing stores. After his death, she worked at Luther College Development Office. She was active in church groups and Girl Scouts. She moved to Cedar Rapids, IA and worked at Iowa Manufacturing where she met Lyle. LaVonne was married to Lyle Mc Elrath in 1969. After Lyle’s death on December 27, 1973, she moved to Mountain Home, Arkansas and worked in a medical lab. She lived in Iberia, Warsaw and Boonville, Missouri. In 1991 she was married to Ray Renfrow. She moved to Indianola, IA in 2001 and he died on September 6, 2002. She raised beagles for 20+ years-even several field champions. Mom loved God’s creation—the beauty of sunrises and sunsets and clouds. She traveled to nearly every state including Hawaii when Gail lived there, also to Canada. LaVonne enjoyed her many friends and neighbors. She always looked on the bright side of things and often said “There is always someone worse off and we need to brighten their days.” She treasured her family, the Dotys and Metcalfs and in-laws. She enjoyed the reunions and wrote long letters full of details after them. She had a strong faith in Jesus. Granddaughters are: Beth LaVon-ne (Mrs. Rick Hendren) and Jennifer Moeller. Great-grand-children are: Aaron, Rachel, Sarah, and Joshua Hendren; Cody, Jesse, Emma Moeller and Sophia Chlcoa. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters: Ida Ellen, Beverly and Donna and brother Ronald.


Elsie Grace Reints

Elsie Grace Reints, age 76, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Koert and Elsie (Van Dyke) Van Heuvelen on June 30, 1927, near Nashua, Iowa. She received her education in Ionia, Iowa. On January 7, 1961, Elsie Van Heuvelen was united in marriage with Harm Reints at the Baptist Church in Independence, Iowa. They made their home north of Clarksville where they farmed and milked cows. In 1974 they moved to an acreage near Clarksville and raised cattle. Elsie was a very hard working farm wife who worked along side Harm while they farmed. She also worked at the Allison Care Center for 29 years as a Nurses Aid, retiring in 2002. She was a member of the Community United Methodist Church in Clarksville, where she was active in United Methodist Women’s Group and she also served on various boards and committees. She liked raising flowers, helping Ron with gardening and visiting and playing cards with her friends and family. Most importantly Elsie enjoyed spending time with and caring for her grandchildren. She always looked forward to her yearly trips with Lena to Minnesota. Elsie died Tuesday, October 21, 2003, at her home in Clarksville, Iowa, from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harm Reints on June 28, 1997; a step great-grandson; one brother, Fred Van Heuvelen; two half sisters, Jennie Smith and Mettina Dixon; and a half brother, Hiram Van Heuvelen. Elsie is survived by one son, Ron (Stacey) Reints of Cedar Falls, Iowa; two step-sons, Harlan Reints of Charles City, Iowa and Larry Reints of San Carlos, Mexico; one step-daughter, Ellen (Wendal) Liddle of New Hampton, Iowa; two grandchildren, Keegan and Hanna; seven step-grandchildren; 15 step-great grandchildren; three step-great great grandchildren; one brother, Kuhny (Jeanie) Van Heuvelen of Hazelton , Iowa; three sisters-in-law, Laurnetta Van Heuvelen of Charles City, Iowa, Lena Hinders of Waverly, Iowa and Hilda Reints of Clarksville, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 25, 2003 at Community United Methodist Church, Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor Julie Poore-Christensen officiating. Organist was Lola Clark. Vocalist was Julie Poore-Christensen who sang “One Day at a Time.” Congregational Hymns were “In the Garden” and “Amazing Grace.” Casketbearers were John Bisbee, Alan Howard, David Howard, Warren Van Dyke, Roger Hoeper and Richard Reints. Interment was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa. Flower Committee was Roberta Knapp and Lois Milius. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
