Deona Kielman Duit

Deona Kielman Duit was born October 8, 1923, at home near Bristow, Iowa, to Folkert and Dena Kielman. She attended school at the West Fork country school No. 1. She graduated in 1942 from Bristow High School. She attended and was baptized at the Bristow Reformed Church. She worked as a housekeeper for various families in the Bristow area. On December 12, 1945, Deona was united in marriage to Jacob Henry Duit at the Bristow Reformed Church. To this union were born three children Arlinda, Corliss Ann and Byron. They lived and farmed two miles west of Dumont, retiring in 1988. Jacob passed away May 27, 1999 and Dena continued to live on the farm until she suffered a severe stroke. She passed away at the Franklin General Hospital on Saturday, March 1, 2003. Dena was a very active member of the Dumont New Hope United Methodist Church, Pathfinders, Sunday School class and United Methodist Women. She also belonged to the A&K club. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, crocheting and various other crafts. She was a 32 year cancer survivor. She is survived by two daughters: Arlinda Sue and husband Rev. Bob McKinley of Hershey, Pennsylvania, Corliss Ann and husband Rev. Aaron Simons of Fairbury, Nebraska, and one son Byron Keith Duit of Naples, Florida. She has one granddaughter, Danita Sue and husband Aaron Hansel of Las Vegas, Nevada, and six grandsons: Aaron Robert McKinley of Hershey, Pennsylvania, Nathan Jon and wife Angel Simons, and Anthony Jacob Simons of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Michael Robert Nagle, Devon Jacob Duit and Jeremy Keith Duit, all of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She has one great grandson, Jacob Marvin Simons. Two sisters: Darlene and husband Marvin Meints of Sheffield, Iowa, and Verla and husband Wayne Ubben of Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Henry Duit, her parents, Folkert and Dena Kielman and one brother, Art Kielman. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at the Dumont New Hope United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael Shaffer officiating. Special music was provided by Tony Simons and Nathan Simons. Pallbearers were Kevin Ubben, Tony Simons, Marlin Meints, Nathan Simons, Aaron McKinley and Wendell Meints. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


William E. Dailey

A Memorial Mass for William E. Dailey, 68, of Hacienda Heights, California was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2003, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Final disposition will be at a later date. William Eugene Dailey was born August 22, 1934 in rural Greene, a son of Alvin R. and Estella D. (Smith) Dailey, and died Friday, February 28, 2003 at Hacienda Heights, California. He received his education at St. Mary’s Academy and graduated from the Greene High School in 1952. He attended Iowa State at Ames and graduated at the University of New Mexico with a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked for Los Angeles County for over 40 years until his retirement. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Sue Vogt on December 30, 1970 in Las Vegas, NE. To this union were born three children: Ryan, Wendy and Kimi. Living family members include his three children of Los Angeles County, his mother, Estella Dailey of Greene, and his sister, Darlene Dailey of Mason City. He was preceded in death by his father, Alvin R. Dailey on November 13, 1959. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the William E. Faith E. Allen

Memorial services for Faith E. Allen, 93, formerly of Friendship Acres, Marble Rock, were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock with Pastor Patricia Shaw of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church officiating. Inurnment was in the Hillside Cemetery at Marble Rock. Faith E. Koebrick was born November 19, 1909 in rural Greene, a daughter of Carl and Anna (Paske) Koebrick, and died Saturday, March 1, 2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. She received her education in the Greene Public Schools graduating in 1926. On September 22, 1927, she was united in marriage to Albert Allen at the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene. To this union were born three children. They farmed West of Marble Rock until 1953, when they moved to a farm near Nashua. For a short time they lived in Nashua before returning to Marble Rock, where they farmed on the Ewald place. Following their retirement they moved to Friendship Acres in 1974. They enjoyed spending their winters in Texas, where they enjoyed picking grapefruit off the trees at their son’s orchard. Mr. Allen died November 16, 1976. In 1980 she moved to Charles City where she maintained her apartment until entering the nursing home. Faith will be remembered as a wonderful mother and grandmother who excelled in the kitchen as cook who made everything from scratch. Her homemade noodles were a special treat. She was an avid gardener and also enjoyed reading and keeping up with current events. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles and writing poetry. Some of her poems were published in the Des Moines Register, Donald Kaul’s Over the Coffee. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Marble Rock and a charter member of the Marble Rock Jolly Seniors. Living family members include her two sons: John (Doris) Allen of Edna, Texas, Charles (Sue) Allen of Rockford; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren, and a son-in-law, Louis Bonie of Reno, Nevada. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a daughter Joan Bonie, two half sisters: Dorothy Carlson and Tess Weires, three sisters: Frances Pattschull, Leone Poppe, and Pat Dodson, and on brother Leon Koebrick. Dorothy Dennis Patterson

Dorothy Dennis Patterson, 77, of Ackley, Iowa, passed away March 1, 2003 at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa. She was born October 5, 1925, in rural Dumont, Iowa, to Willard and Edna (Faber) Dennis. Dorothy graduated from the Dumont High School in 1943 and attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City, Iowa and worked in a bank for several years. She married Carl Patterson on June 22, 1946, and they lived most of their married life near Springfield Missouri, where they owned and operated a game farm. After Carl passed away in 1988, Dorothy moved back to Iowa to be with family and renew old friendships. Dorothy is survived by her brother Dale Dennis of Ackley, Iowa, three first cousins: Lora Jane and husband Jim Hanson of Dumont, Iowa; Paul and wife, Karin Faber of Ackley, Iowa; Ardith and husband, Rod Hill of Hampton, Iowa. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, March 3, 2003, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont with Rev. Patricia Connor officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Beryl Reed accompanying the soloist, Mrs. Norman Brown. Pallbearers were Zac Hanson, Mike Hanson, Levi Hanson, Lucas Hanson, Make Buchanan, Victor Woodley, Steve Haviland and Brittany Loebig Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont in charge of arrangements.


Glenora E. Zimmerman

Memorial services for Glenora E. Zimmerman, 77, of 203 West Street, Bristow, were held Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at the United Methodist Church in Aredale. Inturnment will be in the Dumont Cemetery at a later date. Glenora Ethel Clemens was born September 23, 1925, at Hampton, a daughter of Harry Earl and Elizabeth Bessie (Harms) Clemens, and died Thursday, February 27, 2003, at the Franklin County Memorial Hospital of complications of pneumonia. She attended all twelve years of school in Dumont, graduating in 1943. She helped her father in the Clemens Garage all through World War II. After the war ended she was employed by Jake & Jim’s in Dumont. In 1946 she attended Hamilton Business College where she finished a full secretary course. She then worked in Hampton and Dumont until 1951 when she became employed in the Butler County Engineer’s Office. Her first year on the job was a challenge as the county was ravaged with floods and many of the bridges were washed out. She continued for Butler County until her retirement in July 1958. On April 6, 1957 she was united in marriage to C. Wayne Zimmerman in the United Methodist Church in Dumont. To this union were born three sons: Ross, Rex, and Ron. She was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Worthy Matron in 1956. She was Secretary of Bristow Chapter No. 506 for twenty-five years and more recently a member of Franklin Chapter No. 77 in Hampton. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church. Glenora was an avid gardener, a hand quilter, and a very good canner. She enjoyed playing the piano and going to a good dance. Glenora will be remembered as a very beautiful wife, fine mother and grandmother. She will be sadly missed by her loving husband Wayne Zimmerman of Bristow; sons Ross (Diane) Zimmerman and their children Kaleb, Kiley, and Kelsey Zimmerman all of Aredale; Rex (Sara) Zimmerman and their son Patrick Zimmerman, all of Bristow; Ron (Suzie) Zimmerman and their children: Alissa L. and Hannah K. Zimmerman, Patrick Owen, Sarah Owen, and Taylor Owen, all of Aredale; two brothers: Harley (Ruth) Clemens of Naperville, IL, Floyd L. Clemens and his special friend Jeanette Borchardt of Nora Springs; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Katie Meyer Dekker

Katie Meyer Dekker, age 93, of Aplington, Iowa, was born December 3, 1909, near Kesley, Iowa, the daughter of Nichlaas and Katie Eltjes Kampman. She received her education from a rural school, Ripley Township School. On December 10, 1929, Katie Kampman was united in marriage to George A. Meyer at the Bethel Reformed Church Parsonage. They farmed in rural Butler County near Kesley and Bristow, until they moved to Aplington in 1943. George died on October 20, 1981. Katie was very adept at hand work, and enjoyed crocheting, tatting and quilting. For many years she baked and decorated cakes for weddings, anniversaries and birthdays. She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Aplington and actively participated in the work of the women’s guild. Katie married Henry Dekker on July 23, 1988. Henry died July 21, 2002. Katie was a resident of Maple Manor Nursing Home for about three years. She died there February 27, 2003, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, George Meyer and Henry Dekker, and three brothers, Chris, John and Elmer Kampman. She is survived by two daughters, Edna (Marius) Kole and Lois (Ralph) Wessels both of Aplington, IA; one son, Donald (Mildred) Meyer of Pella, IA; three step-daughters; Carol (Robert) Rotgers of Milwaukee, WI, Darla (Don) Noble of Aplington, IA, and Joyce (David) Mader of Cedar Falls, IA; 12 grandchildren; 25 great- grandchildren; 9 step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Katherine Kampman of Aplington, IA and Johanna Kampman of Cedar Falls, IA. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 3, 2003, at First Reformed Church, Aplington, Iowa, with Rev. Harlan DeJong officiating. Organist was Marilyn Poppens. Vocalists Renee Roskamp, Rochelle Schiebout and Cinda Hawver sang “Peace In The Presence Of God” and “If You Could See Me Now.” Congregational Hymns were “Blessed Assurance” and “It Is Well With My Soul.” Casketbearers were Kyle Dykstra, Dallas Wessels, Tim Dykstra, Kurt Wessels, Adam Dykstra and Mark Hubbard. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Terry W. Oltman

Terry W. Oltmann, age 62, of Camdenton, Missouri, died Friday afternoon March 7, 2003 at his home. He was born on March 16, 1940 in Butler County, Iowa a son of Thomas and Erma Bochmann Oltmann. Terry graduated from the University of Iowa. He married Diane Hart in Allison, Iowa on June 19, 1964. Terry began his banking career in Keokuk, Iowa where he and Diane resided for twenty years. Terry and Diane moved to Lebanon, Missouri where he was employed at a local bank. They moved to Camdenton, in 1992. He was Vice President, Cashier and Executive Officer of First National Bank. He served on various committees in the Bankers Association and was a member and past President of the Kiwanis Club of Camdenton. Terry is survived by his wife: Diane Oltmann, one son: Matt Oltmann and wife Wendy, of Eldon, Missouri, two brothers: Wendell Oltmann and wife Edith of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Keith Oltmann and wife Bonnie of Temple, Texas, two nieces, two nephews, one great niece and two great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one niece Cara.


John Hippen Sr.

John Hippen, Sr., age 92, of Aplington, Iowa, was born September 23, 1910, the son of Frank and Isbrandena (Kurtzleben) Hippen near Wellsburg in Grundy County, Iowa. He received his education in German Township Country School near his home. John was united in marriage with Irene Ostendorf April 12, 1932, in the parsonage of the Wellsburg Reformed Church, Wellsburg, Iowa. The couple lived in the Buck Grove area where John hauled cream for 10 years for the Buck Grove Creamery. John also farmed near Buck Grove for 34 years, retiring in 1972. They moved to Aplington in 1975. On April 15, 2002, John became a resident at Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington. John was formerly a member of Ackley Christian Reformed Church where he served as both an Elder and a Deacon. Later he transferred his membership to Austinville Christian Reformed Church. John was a farmer most of his life. He loved to go fishing and was an avid baseball fan of the Minnesota Twins where he attended many games in the summer. He was also a big Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed gospel music. John died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene on July 4, 1996; one son, Rueben Hippen, July 1, 1995; three grandchildren in infancy; three sisters, Grace Geiken, Ella Luchtenburg and Dora Harms; three brothers, Jake, Herman and Henry Hippen and five siblings in infancy. John is survived by four sons, Daryl Hippen of Waterloo, IA, John (Mary Lou) Hippen Jr. of Aplington, IA, Dennis (Evelyn) Hippen of Aplington, IA and Gordon (Joann) Hippen of Aplington, IA; one daughter, Glenda (Greg) Ludwig of Aplington, IA; 17 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; one step-great great grandchild; one daughter-in-law, JoAnn Hippen of Parkersburg, IA; and one sister-in-law, Harriette Hippen of Ackley, IA. Funeral Services were at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 8, 2003, at the Austinville Christian Reformed Church, Austinville, Iowa. Officiating was Rev. George McGuire and Rev. Donald Patet. The Organist was Bob Abkes and the Accompanist was Cami Haugstad. The vocalists Rev. Donald Patet and Henry Groeneveld sang a duet “One Day at a Time” and “I Want To See My Savior First of All.” The Congregational Hymns were “It Is Well With My Soul,” “What a Friend We Have In Jesus” and “Blessed Assurance.” The Honorary Casketbearers were Grant Ludwig, Greg Ludwig Jr., Stacey Sherburne, Jamie Buhr, Jason Peterson and Nick Seedorff. The Casketbearers were Galen Hippen, Kevin Hippen, Tim Hippen, Michael Hippen, Gary Hippen and Chad Hippen. Interment was at the Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home were in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Margaret Dickman

Margaret Dickman, 81, of Allison, Iowa, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2003, at the Waverly Municipal Hospital, in Waverly, Iowa. Margaret was born December 27, 1921, in Mason City, Iowa to Lyman Vernon and Aline Fredericka (Bergmann) Porter. She attended schools in Bluffton and Burr Oak and graduated from Decorah High School in 1939. Margaret was married to Emery Dickman on April 20, 1963, at Trinity American Lutheran Church in Waterloo, Iowa. She worked as a Sales Cost Analyst for Rath Packing Company for sixteen years. After she married Emery, she left work to live with him on the farm. Margaret was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, Iowa. Margaret enjoyed raising her daughter, and she was a kind and compassionate individual who cared for her family. She was shy and quiet, but she had a keen sense of humor. Margaret is survived by her husband, Emery Dickman of Allison, Iowa; daughter, Mary Dickman and her husband, Andrew Foote of Brooklyn, New York. She was preceded in death by one sister. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 12, 2003 at the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with Rev. Jerry Laehn officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Vivian Green accom-panying the congregational singing. Pallbearers were Ted Cuvelier, Delbert Harms, Bernard Franken, Alan Eberline, Eugene Ostendorf and Jeff Sherburne. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Rosamond S. (Dralle) Bruns

Funeral services for Rosamond S. (Dralle) Bruns, 83, of 201 North Fourth Street, Greene, were held Saturday, March 8, 2003, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Rosamond Sophia Dralle was born August 27, 1919 in rural West Point Township, Butler County, a daughter of William and Pauline “Lena” (Kammeyer) Dralle, and died Tuesday, March 4, 2003 at the Liebe Care Center in Greene of complications resulting from progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). She was baptized on October 19, 1919 and affirmed her faith on April 28, 1935 at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church at Vilmar. She received her education at the Brushy Mound Country School in Butler County. On December 11, 1938 she was united in marriage to Marvin F. Bruns at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church at Vilmar. She farmed alongside her husband Southwest of Greene until their retirement in 1979. They moved to their new home in Greene in 1989 and became members of St. Peter Lutheran Church. Those thankful for sharing her life are her three daughters and their spouses: Virginia and Don Feldman, Sandra and Gene Ross, Judy and John Osier all of Greene; 10 grandchildren: Robin (Duane) Majewski, Troy (Teresa) Feldman, Tim (Maria) Feldman, Todd (Teri) Ross, Traci (David) Zvokel, Tara Ross, Jon Osier, Jan (Tom) Muench, Jill Osier and Jess Osier; 12 great grandchildren: Tyler and Melissa Majewski, Lisa and Jared Feldman, Brady, Kelsey, and Megan Feldman, Nicholas and Carter Ross, Christian and Kinsey Zvokel, and Dante Ross; one brother: Paul Dralle of Clarksville and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin on July 27, 2002, her parents, three sisters: Minnie Kruse, Ida Heuer, Violet McNeilus and five brothers: Bill, Henry, Ervin, Siegfred, and Lawrence Dralle; and a great grandson: Anthony Ross. Delta Mae Folkerds

Delta Mae Folkerds, 71, a long time resident of Hampton, Iowa, passed away at Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell, Iowa, on Friday, March 7, 2003. Her children and grandchildren were at her side in her final hours. Delta was born on May 2, 1931, in Hampton, Iowa, to Raymond and Vera Froning. On September 11, 1947, Delta married John Folkerds. They were happily married for over fifty plus years. During this time, Delta worked various jobs and tended to her home and family, while John worked for the Maytag Company. Delta enjoyed bowling, camping, crocheting, and making items for her family and friends. She liked to show off her musical animated collection. She especially enjoyed going out to eat and shopping with her best friend, Dorothy VanBlair. She loved her dog “Chico” and he brought her much comfort after John’s death. Survivors include her children: Roger Folkerds and his wife, Linda of Grinnell, Iowa and Joyce Eitel and her husband, Jim, of Newton, Iowa; two grandchildren: Dean Miller of Newton, Iowa and Dawn Rupp and her husband, Rusty of Wyoming, Iowa; five step-grandchildren: Julie Bates, Mollie Warburton, Lessie Eitel, Marcy Eitel and Ty Eitel; one great-grandchild: Peyton Rupp; one step-great-grandchild: Jarrod Bates; three sisters: Margaret Philpott, Donna Viet and Shirley Siems. Delta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, in 2002; one son Ronald; and two brothers, Cecil and Delton. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hampton, Iowa with Rev. Jon Anderson officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Jean Sandvig accom-panying the singing of Dawn Simons and Jon Anderson. Ushers were Lee Hindrichs and Carl Hageman. Pallbearers were Ty Eitel, Randy Viet, Dennis Viet, Steve Metz, David Siems and Mike Siems. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Annetta T. Gerdes

Annetta T. Gerdes, age 83, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born May 11, 1919, the daughter of Jerry and Ramie Johnson Rewerts near Austinville, Iowa. Her early childhood was spent on a farm and attending a country school and then attending Dumont High School. Upon graduation, she attended Central College at Pella and received a teaching certificate and taught for two years. On June 18th, 1943, she was united in marriage to Rionold Gerdes from Wall Lake, Iowa who was serving in the Army. She went to live with him in Battle Creek, Michigan. When he was discharged, they farmed five years and in 1951, moved to Aplington, Iowa, where Ron became a John Deere Implement dealer. Annetta went back to teaching in the elementary grades of the public school for several years. She was an active mother and teacher, having made her confession of faith in the Washington Reformed Church in 1940 and transferring membership to Aplington 1st Reformed Church after they moved there. She took an active part in the church by teaching Sunday School and catechism, singing in the choir and directing Junior Choir for about 16 years. She was a member of the Women’s Guild, being an officer on the local level as well as on the union level for many years. Annetta moved to Parkersburg after her husband, Ron passed away March 10, 1978, and she transferred her membership to Hope Reformed Church. She had much joy in volunteering, especially calling on nursing homes and shut-ins, and never going empty handed. She traveled with friends on bus trips for 10 years, going to almost every state in the union. Her motto in life was, “In whatever situation I am in, there I will be content.” Annetta died on Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Rionold; and her brother, William Rewerts. Annetta is survived by three sons, Stanley (Sonja) Gerdes, Waterloo, Iowa; Trent (Rita) Gerdes, Waterloo, Iowa and Steve (Amber) Gerdes, Hiawassee, Georgia; one daughter, Linda (David) Schilling, Mattoon, Illinois; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dr. Ray (Ruth) Rewerts, Holland, Michigan and Paul (Bernice) Rewerts, Grundy Center, Iowa; one sister, Ida Frey, Cedar Falls, Iowa; and one sister-in-law, Marion Rewerts, Iowa Falls, Iowa. Funeral Service were at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2003, at the Hope Reformed Church in Parkersburg, Iowa. Officiating was Rev. Neal Ooms and the organist was Cathy Myers. The soloist, Pat Woelber san “Finally Home” and “Safe In The Arms Of Jesus” and the Congregational Hymns were “Amazing Grace,” “What A Day It Will Be, When My Jesus I Will See” and “Abide With Me.” The Casketbearers were her Grandsons, Sean Gerdes, Matthew Gerdes, Nicholas Gerdes, Scott Thompson, Jonathan Hietbrink and a neighbor LaVern Kluiter. Interment was at the Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Thelma Marie Fenneman

Thelma Marie Fenneman, age 88, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Fred and Ella Busse Salge on December 16, 1914, in Butler County, near Bristow, Iowa. She was baptized and later confirmed into the Christian faith on April 27, 1930, at the Vilmar St. John Lutheran Church. Thelma received her education from Brushy Mound Country School near home. On September 30, 1934, Thelma Salge was united in marriage with Roy Fenneman at the Vilmar St. John Lutheran Church. They made their home and farmed all of their married life north of Clarksville. Shortly after Roy’s death in 1982, she moved to the home they had built in Clarksville. She was hard working farm wife and a loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. Thelma was a long time member of the First United Church of Christ - Pleasant Valley where she was active in Women’s Fellowship and taught Sunday School for many years. She loved music, enjoyed singing in her church choir and in her earlier days singing duets at Vilmar when she was a member. She was a very good cook and baker. Thelma liked to watch birds that visited her Martin birdhouse. Some of her favorite times were in the summer when she would raise a big garden and when her grandchildren would come to stay. She liked to go to threshing shows with Roy and she would often take her grandchildren. Thelma died on Saturday, March 8, 2003, at Community Nursing Home in Clarksville of natural causes. She was preceded in death by husband, Roy Fenneman, on June 15, 1982; a daughter, Lavon Kolb, on December 14, 1988; her parents; and two brothers, Glenn and Frank Salge. Thelma is survived by one daughter, Marlene (Duane) Miller of rural Allison, Iowa; four grandchildren, Rod (Brenda) Miller, Jodee (David) Bixler, Janelle Kolb and Jeff Kolb; three great grandchildren, Mark Miller, Beth Miller and Melissa Miller; one sister, Lucille Miller of Turtle Lake, Wisconsin; and one son-in-law, Jake Kolb of Clarksville, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at the First United Church of Christ - Pleasant Valley, rural Clarksville, Iowa with Rev. Anne Sunday officiating. Organist Roberta Nieman accompanied Congregational Hymns “How Great Thou Art,” “Beyond The Sunset” and “The Old Rugged Cross.” Casketbearers were Rodney Miller, Mark Miller, Jeff Kolb, Chris Fenneman, David Bixler and Leonard Reints. Interment was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Colleen H. Conley

Colleen H. Conley, age 69, of Canton, Ohio, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2003. She was born the daughter of Clayton and Irene Elliott April 5, 1933 in Clarksville, Iowa; she had been a resident of Canton since 1951. Colleen was an LPN working at Molly Stark Hospital until retiring. She then continued employment with Mentor and provided a home for many handicapped people. She was a volunteer for Touching Little Lives, and enjoyed being a foster parent as well as sewing, quilting, and being with her Labradors. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister, Karla Elliott and her husband Dewey Conley who passed away December 6, 1975. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Rob and Trish Glew of Missillon, Ohio; her son Doug Conley at home; foster son and daughter-in-law, John and Darlene Strader of Salem, Ohio; granddaughters, Amy Fry and husband Ron of Canton, Erin May of Missillon and Becky Strader of Salem; sister and brother-in-law, Andy and Herb Rinkleff of Nebraska; nephew, Stu Rinkleff and wife, Shelly of Oklahoma; niece, Colleen Neiland and husband Pat of Iowa; special cousin Stan Wedeking and wife Mary of Iowa; many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Monday, March 3, 2003, at the Reed Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Emery officiating. Burial was in West Lawn Cemetery. Reed Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Harold "Curly" Ellefson

03/22/03Harold “Curly” Ellefson, 82, of Hampton, Iowa, passed away March 12, 2003 at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton. Curly was born July 26, 1920 in Alden, Iowa to Frank and Marie (Anders) Ellefson. He graduated from the Iowa Falls High School and was married to Anne Stoffer on August 23, 1941 in Bethany, Missouri. Curly worked for Maytag Company in Hampton, Iowa for 36 years. He was Superintendent of Engineering Services for the Maytag Company when he retired. Curly has held many offices and duties for the Hampton Lions Club. He was an asset to the Hampton Lions Club by all of the volunteering he has done. He has 38 years of service to the Lions Club, 17 years of perfect attendance, sponsored six members, 10 years of chairman of Santa’s Helpers, 3 terms on the Board of Directors, 2 years on the Finance Committee, 2 years as chairman and co-chair on the annual Chicken BBQ dinner, 2 years public relations committee. Curly was a 1991 Warren Coleman Award winner, 1992 appreciation award for Santa’s Helpers, 5 years on the calling committee, 1995 Melvin Jones Fellow Award, Coming to Your Senses Vision Screening Volunteer and past Lions Santa Claus. Curly also did many wood working projects of Operation Santa, Christmas Store, Camp courageous of Iowa, Lions-sponsored Summer Camp for blind children, summer reading program at the Library, Hampton Lions Bingo door prizes, Hampton Fire Department Convention and for the Iowa Welcome Center. He was a 50 year member of the Hampton United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for 12 years. He was a past Scout Leader. In 1968, he was the Secretary for the Hampton Country Club and in 1969 was it’s president, a past member of the Toastmasters Club, President and Secretary-Treasurer of PTA in the 1970’s. Curly is survived by two daughters: Carol and husband, Ray Achterkirch of Jackson, Minnesota and Carmen and husband, Bill Lundie F. Moline, Illinois; a son: Timothy and wife, Peggee Ellefson of Eldora; grandchildren: Mary and husband, Jeff Mikula, Stephanie Lundie, Bill Lundie, Cassie Ellefson and Ben Ellefson; great grandson, Bradley Mikula and sister, Hazel Richtsmeier of Ackley. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Anne. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, March 14, 2003 at the Hampton United Methodist Church in Hampton with Rev. Jerry Miller officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Roger Mollenbeck accompanying soloist, Mrs. Brian Stevens. The ushers were Kay Yaw, Don Clay and Shannon Logan. Honorary pallbearers were the Hampton Lions Club. Final resting place was in the Alexander Cemetery in Alexander, Iowa. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Dr. Eldlridge W. Roark, Jr.

Dr. Eldridge W. Roark, Jr., 69, died Tuesday, February 25, in the Naples Community Hospital. Dr. Roark is the son-in-law of Alfred and Anna Heuer of Allison. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Mary Roark, formerly of Bristow, IA and currently living in Naples, FL; his daughter and her fiance, Lisa Roark and Frank Haner of Boston, MA; his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Marina Roark of New York City; and three sisters. He was predeceased by his parents and three nieces. Dr. Roark was born on April 22, 1933 in Anniston, Alabama, the son of Reverend and Mrs. Eldridge W. Roark, Sr. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Samford University, and his M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Syracuse University. Upon graduating from Samford, he joined the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge in 1957. For more than 37 years, he served as an administrator on university campuses including Syracuse University, the University of Iowa, Purdue University, Radford University, and Plattsburgh State University of New York. He also worked at IBM early in his career. Devotion to family and church were important parts of Dr. Roark’s life. He was moderator of the Board of Deacons at Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church at the time of his death and was also a Presbyterian elder. Funeral services were held on March 1 at Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church in Naples, with a burial service for his cremains at the Vilmar cemetery at 3:00 p.m., April 26. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Deacons’ Fund at Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church, 1226 Piper Boulevard, Naples, FL, 34110.

Eugene R. Viers

Funeral services for Eugene R. Viers, 93, of Greene will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 27, 2003 at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 26 at the Chapel and will continue one hour before services. Eugene Robert Viers was born September 9, 1909 in Storm Lake, Iowa, a son of Charles and Minnie (Fields) Viers, and died Monday, March 24, 2003 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Floyd LaVerne Clemens

Floyd LaVerne Clemens, 72, of Dumont, Iowa passed away March 21, 2003 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa. He was born September 17, 1930 in Butler County, Iowa to Harry E. and Elizabeth (Harms) Clemens. Floyd graduated from the Dumont High School and served in the United States Navy as an airplane mechanic during the Korean Conflict. He was married to Olga Louis Anderson on July 22, 1953 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The marriage ended in divorce. After Floyd returned to Dumont, he worked with his father at Clemens Garage and attended various service schools. He later owned and operated Clemens Garage. Floyd worked at various types of jobs, such as farming, excavator, auto mechanic, and maintenance technician at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. Floyd enjoyed country living, where he could have a vegetable garden, tend to his flowers, his favorite being holly hocks and marigolds. He loved to go to dances every week, when he was able. Floyd was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran church in Hampton, Iowa. He is survived by his son Nicholas Kelly Clemens of Hampton; brother: Harley and wife, Ruth Clemens of Naperville, Illinois; brother-in-law: Wayne Zimmerman of Bristow; special friend: Jeanette Borchardt of Nora Springs; six nephews; one granddaughter, and one grandson. Floyd is preceded in death by his parents, former wife; daughter, Dana Nelson in 2001, and his sister, Glenora Zimmerman. Funerals services were held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, March 24, 2003 at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, Iowa with Rev. Jon Anderson officiating. Songs sang were “Abide With Me” and “Take My Hand Precious Lord.” Pallbearers were Jarret Pedersen, Duane Wubbena, Ron Zimmerman, Rex Zimmerman, Ross Zimmerman and Kiley Zimmerman. Alice Cora Barnett
 

Alice Cora Barnett, 91, died Friday, March 21, 2003 in Waterloo, Iowa of natural causes. She resided with her niece, Gloria M. Lewis of Denver, Iowa. Alice was born November 10, 1911 in rural Butler County, the daughter of George and Kattie Barnett. She was preceded in death by three sisters: Eula Miller, Ruth Barnett, and May Day; two brothers: Clarence Barnett and Raymond Barnett. Alice is survived by several nieces and nephews. Miss Barnett attended rural Butler County country schools and was a graduate of Hampton High School. She received her Associates Degree in Education from Miltonvale Wesleyan College, Miltonvale, Kansas and taught in rural Butler County Schools. Alice also farmed with her brother, Raymond for forty-five years. She was a lifetime member of the Bennezette Wesleyan Church, Bristow, Iowa and served as regional secretary for the Wesleyan Women’s International for numerous years. She loved teaching Sunday School and taking care of her great nieces, Carmen and Julia Lewis. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at the Bennezette Wesleyan Church with Rev. Dearl Thomas and Rev. Tim McGuire officiating. Special music was provided by organist, John Lewis accompanying soloist, Michael McCraney. The usher was Donovan Krukow. Pallbearers were John Lewis, David Ebling, Don Tindall, David Krukow, Bob Atkinson and Darwin Ebling. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

David Lee Peterson, 70, of Dumont, Iowa passed away March 20, 2003 at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. He was born on August 29, 1932 in Popejoy, Iowa to Alex and Lillie (Graff) Peterson. David graduated from the Geneva High School in 1950. David was married to Berneta Reicherts on August 29, 1953 in Waterloo, Iowa. He was a farmer all his life, farming near Sheffield for two years before moving to their farm near Dumont. He was a member of the St. Francis Catholic Church in Dumont until it’s closing, he then attended St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton. David was active in the Dumont Telephone Company Board, ASCS Committee, former member of the Dumont Community School Board, Aredale Elevator Board, and was a member of the National Guard. David is survived by his wife Berneta Peterson of Dumont; four sons: Dennis and wife, Janice Peterson of Bristow, Dean and wife, Mary Peterson of Dumont, Daniel and wife, Teresa Peterson of Dumont, and Dwight and wife, Sherry Peterson of Dumont; three daughters: Debra and husband, Dalen Miller of Dumont, Donna and husband, Bob Boots of Pella, and Dawn Peterson of Atlanta, Georgia; two sisters: Pat and husband, Loren Cooper of Dows, and Beulah and husband, Duane Schuldt of Tripoli; a brother: Lauren and wife, Meredith Peterson of Rolla, Missouri; twenty-six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 22, 2003 at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton, Iowa with Fr. Jim Miller officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Leon Kuehner accompanying the soloist, Linda Kuehner. The ushers were Jim Angstman and John Angstman. Pallbearers were Cory Miller, Shane Peterson, Todd Peterson, Jesse Peterson, Joshua Peterson and Matthew Peterson. Honorary pallbearers were Cody Peterson and Erran Miller. Lydia T. Henning

Lydia T. Henning, 86, of Allison, Iowa, passed away March 18, 2003, at the Allison Care Center in Allison, Iowa. Lydia was born March 13, 1917 in Butler County, Iowa to Edward J. and Jenny (Lursen) Heyenga. She attended schools in Allison. Lydia was married on January 10, 1935 in Alexander, Iowa to John H. Henning. She was a homemaker, and also drove school bus for Kindergarten and Special Ed children in Greene and cooked in the Greene Schools. John and Lydia owned and operated the Dumont Motel, they were also Watkins Dealers. Lydia was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church in Allison where she was a Sunday School teacher and was involved in the ladies church circles. She enjoyed sewing, embroidering, and knitting. She also enjoyed her garden and flowers, playing piano and fixing hair for family and friends. Lydia is survived by three daughters: Marlys and husband, Don Stoffregen of Cedar Falls, daughter Joan and husband, Wayne Miller of Allison and daughter Jeanette and husband, Bill Boyd of Marble Rock; two sons: Edward and wife, Lucy Henning of Mason City, John J. and wife, Sue Henning of Rock Springs, Wyoming; three sisters: Frieda and husband Vern Christensen of Allison, Joselene Smith of Janesville and Harriet and husband, Robert Freesemann of Allison; brother Karl and wife, Joyce Heyenga of Allison; twenty-four grandchildren; thirty-three great-grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; four step grandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one grandson, one great granddaughter, one great grandson, twin brothers John and Edwin and sisters Grace, Caroline and Esther. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 21, 2003 at the Trinity Reformed Church in Allison with Rev. Steve Petroelje officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Sandi Meinders accompanying the soloist, Alda Frey. Ushers were the church ushers. Pallbearers were Bill J. Samuel Thomas Heath

Samuel Thomas Heath of Allison, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2003 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo at the age of 85 years. He was born on March 23, 1917 to Willie and Annabelle Heath in Sheperdsville, KY. He served with the First Calvary Division in WWII from 1941-1945. On July 25, 1970 he was united in marriage to Beula Wait in Mudfordsville, KY. He was a retired farmer. Survivors include a son: Charles Heath of Louisville, KY; a daughter: Anna Brown of Fairdale, KY; a step-son: Larry Becker of Clarksville; a step-daughter: Cleta Wilson of Dumont; four grandchildren and a half-sister: Ruby Friend of Louisville, KY. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Beula. Funeral services were held Monday, March 10, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley, Iowa with Rev. Patricia Connor officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Ackley, IA with Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley in charge of arrangements.
