Ester Yearling Barta
07/07/03
Esther Yearling Barta, age 90, of New Hampton, died Wednesday, June
25, 2003 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, New
Hampton after a long illness. A Mass of Christian burial was held at
10:30 a.m., Saturday at Holy Family Parish-St. Mary’s Center, New
Hampton with Rev. Carl Schmitt celebrating the Mass. The pall was
placed on the casket by her eight daughters. Lector for the service
was grandson, Craig Cramer. The offertory gifts were presented by
granddaughters: Denise Ohm and Lisa Herold. Granddaughters, Karen
Alberts, Janice Cramer and Diane Schoonover were the eucharistic
ministers. Burial was in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Hampton with
grandsons: Michael Schoonover, Craig Cramer, Matthew Urness, David
Swenson, Richard Gensch, Mark Ackley, Ryan Wegner and James Konig as
pallbearers. Esther Margaret Brummond was born March 12, 1913 on the
Brummond homestead in Dayton Township, southeast of New Hampton in
Chickasaw County, IA. She was one of the nine children of Samuel and
Gertrude (Heying) Brummond. She married Orville (Borb) Yearling on
April 22, 1930 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Hampton. They
became the parents of eight daughters. He predeceased her on March
1, 1958. She married Emil Barta on February 27, 1965 at St. Mary’s
Catholic Church, New Hampton. He predeceased her on May 3, 1982.
Esther was known for her cooking skills, having started and ended
St. Mary’s hot lunch program as head cook, was the night cook at
Holly’s Cafe in New Hampton under Keith and Charlotte Hollis in the
late 40’s and 50’s, catered men’s night at the New Hampton Country
Club and with her husband Emil, catered wedding receptions and
funeral dinners for years. She loved having a large garden, canning
a cellar full of garden products and producing beautiful border
flowers. Besides gardening, her main hobby was playing cards, which
she did on a regular basis at the Senior Center in New Hampton.
Esther lived in her home in New Hampton from 1941 until she had a
stroke on February 2, 1999, after which she entered the Allison Care
Center under the watchful eye of her daughter Alice Konig, the head
nutritionist. In 2002, she transferred to the New Hampton Nursing
and Rehabilitation Center so she could return to her roots and be
closer to her other children. She was a loving example of strength
to her eight daughters, and she met challenges with determination
and a smile. Survivors include eight daughters: Phyllis Schoonover
of Fredericks-burg, Alice Konig of Allison, Jane Urness (Andrew) of
St. Paul, MN, Betty Swenson (Art) of Plainfield, IL, Dianne
Polocheck (Lee) of Milwaukee, Pat Ackley (Harold) of Fredericksburg,
Mary Yearling of Omaha, NE, Nancy Wegner (Russell) of
Fredericksburg; thirty-one grandchildren; sixty-four
great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and one sister:
Marie Meier of Chester, IA. She was preceded in death by her
parents, her husbands, three sisters: Adeline Shinstine, Mabel
Stiefel and Arlene Brummond; four brothers: John Brummond Sr.,
Lawrence Brummond, Clarence Brummond and Gerald Brummond. Hugeback
Funeral Home of New Hampton was in charge of arrangements.

William L. Campbell, 81, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away June 23, 2003
at his home in Dumont. He was born on March 4, 1922 in Marshalltown,
Iowa, to Alvin D. and Opal (Chapman) Campbell. William married Alice
Reysack on March 5, 1955 in Aredale, Iowa. He worked as a fork lift
operator at United Hydraulics in Hampton as well as working several
odd jobs around the area. William enjoyed fishing, playing the
guitar, singing, camping, making crafts, working outside on his
cars, playing and spending time with his grandchildren. William is
survived by his wife Alice Campbell of Dumont, four daughters: Patty
Metz of Clarksville, Mary Ann Miller of Dumont, Sherry and husband
Darrell Penning of Dumont, Victoria and husband Kenneth Wygle of
Aplington, and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
parents, daughter Becky Sue, son-in-law Jim Metz, son-in-law Richard
Miller, and a grandson. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m.,
Wednesday, June 25, 2003 at the New Hope United Methodist Church in
Dumont with Rev. Michael Shaffer officiating. Special music was
provided by organist, Mrs. Beryl Reed. Ushers were Harold Reents and
Don Wilken. Pallbearers were Zachary Penning, Louie Doty, Steve
Metz, Dustin Wygle, Kenneth Wygle, Danny Paullus and Boyd Campbell.
Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
07/07/03 Todd Alan Folkerts, 37, of Allison, Iowa, died Sunday, June
29,2003, at his home. He was born on February 19, 1966, in Waverly,
Iowa, the son of Darrell and Joanne (Chandler) Folkerts. Todd was
baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Plainfield and
attended the Plainfield School System. He graduated from the
Plainfield High School in 1984 and then moved to Arizona for a time.
He then returned to Plainfield, and on May 31, 1986, was united in
marriage with Pam Sterba at Faith United Methodist Church, Waverly,
and to this union three children were born, Holly, Dustin and
Brianna. They made their first home in Janesville, Iowa, and Todd
worked for Ye Olde Strippery in Cedar Falls. In the late 1980’s,
Todd went to work for Winnebago Industries in Hampton, Iowa, and in
1990 the family moved to Allison. Todd and Pam later divorced. This
last February, Todd celebrated 15 years with Winnebago. Todd enjoyed
life, his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, classic Rock & Roll,
collecting Bald Eagle plates and figurines, classic cars, but his
greatest passion was his kids. Todd is survived by his three
children, Holly Folkerts, Dustin Folkerts, Brianna Folkerts of
Allison; his parents, Darrell and Joanne Folkerts of Waverly; his
brother and sister-in-law, Neil & Connie Folkerts of Waverly and
their children, Hayley Folkerts, Hannah Folkerts, Dillon Chandler
Smith Folkerts; his sister and her fiancé, Dana Folkerts and Tony
Boveia of Santa Barbara, California; maternal grandparents, Joe &
Goldie Chandler of Waverly; his paternal grand mother, Elsie
Folkerts of Clarksville; and his former wife, Pam, of Allison. He
was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Henry Folkerts.
Celebration of Life Services will be 10:30 A. M. on Wednesday, July
2,2003, at St. James Lutheran Church, Allison, with burial in the
Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM
until 8:00 PM on Tuesday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly.
Memorials may be directed to the family for a later designation.
07/07/03 Ethel Maurine Reckler, the daughter of Vernon and Clara Brown
French, was born March 14, 1905 near Newton, Iowa. She was a
graduate of the Newton Senior High School, Class of 1923. She also
attended Iowa State College in Ames, for two years. Maurine was an
avid gardener and horticulturist. On August 3, 1932, Maurine was
united in marriage with Wesley Andrew Reckler in Newton. She devoted
her life to her husband, children and family, and helped Wesley on
the family acreage. Maurine was an active member of the First United
Methodist Church; Newton Camera Club; Jasper County Farm Bureau;
Palo Alto Grange; Jasper County Extension Service; Jasper County
Senior Citizens; Farm Bureau Women’s LL Club; Airstream Travel
Trailer Club; she enjoyed her crafts; was a 4-H leader for many
years, locally & with the state and a Life Member of the Jasper
County Historical Society. Death came to Maurine at the age of 98,
on Wednesday afternoon, June 18, 2003 at the Iowa Methodist Medical
Center in Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents, her
husband, Wesley on June 8, 1996 and her brother, Leslie French.
Those left to honor the memory of Maurine include her son, Donald
Reckler of Ames, Iowa; her two daughters & sons-in-law: Doris Jean &
Charles Cabalka of Newton and Roberta & Wayne Wiegmann of Allison,
Iowa; her four grandchildren: Dwight Cabalka, Karen Baer, Gail
Wiegmann and Wendy Wiegmann; six great-grandchildren: Chelsa, Chad &
Chase Cabalka; Krista, Jenna & Ryan Baer; a sister, Lucile Johnstone
of Newton; and her many friends. Maurine will be greatly missed by
all who knew and loved her.
Mina D. Woodley

Mina D. Woodley, 87, of Dumont, died Friday, June 27, at Grundy
County Memorial Hospital, Grundy Center. She was born March 26,
1916, in Dumont, daughter of Rube and Mary Dohlman Wearda. She
married Claire W. Woodley on December 3, 1936, in rural Dumont. He
preceded her in death. Mrs. Woodley graduated from Dumont Community
School, then received her teaching certificate from Iowa State
Teacher’s College, Cedar Falls. She and her husband farmed.
Survivors include: Three sons: Victor (Esther) of Allison; Marvin
(Sue) of Middleburg, FL, and Allan (Carol) of Parkersburg; a
daughter, Ruby (Ronnie) Clemens of Vinton; thirteen grandchildren;
thirteen great grandchildren; and a sister, Rena Bohlen of
Northfield, MN. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday,
July 1, at the New Hope United Methodist Church, Dumont, with burial
in Dumont Cemetery. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home of Dumont was in
charge of arrangements.
Wilhelmine Christine Jungling
07/14/03 Wilhelmine Christine Jungling, age 84, of Kesley, Iowa, was born
the daughter of William and Harmine Gerdina (Claassen Planteur)
Kampman on February 5, 1919 in Butler County, near Kesley, Iowa. She
was baptized on July 6, 1919 and made confession of faith July 19,
1936. She received her education from the Dumont Consolidated School
and graduated in 1937. On November 28, 1939, Wilhelmine Kampman was
united in marriage with Ben F. Jungling at her parent’s farm east of
Kesley. They made their home on Ben’s parents’ farm east of Kesley
where they lived until 1960, when they moved to their current home
in Kesley. Wilhelmine also worked at the Kesley Grocery Store and
was a personal care giver for various families. Bethel Reformed
Church, where she faithfully attended and was a member, was an
important part of her life. She was also active in the Ladies Guild.
She was a loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother who
always liked to send her family home with homemade bread and
cookies. She also liked baking, having coffee with her friends at
the Kesley Diner, quilting and jigsaw puzzles. She especially loved
caring and babysitting for her grandchildren and great
grandchildren. On July 4th , 2003, Wilhelmine died peacefully at her
home of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Ben F. Jungling; a grandson, Gregory Jungling; her parents; four
sisters, Alma Meester, Johanna Boelman, Mary Schipper and Alberta
Schaap; and one brother, Chris Kampman. Wilhelmine is survived by
one son, Vernon (Catherine) Jungling of Cedar Rapids; two daughters,
Joyce (Dennis) Meyer of rural Bristow, Merna (Darrell) Johnson of
Ackley; nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one brother,
Claas Kampman of Parkersburg; and three sisters, Margaret Folkerts
of Allison, Clara (Roland) Krusey of German Valley, Illinois and
Annie (Donald) Allspach of Parkersburg. Funeral Services were held
at 1:30 p.m., Monday, July 7, 2003, at Bethel Reformed Church,
Aplington, Iowa with Pastor Scott Summers officiating. Organist was
Belva Schipper and Pianist was Grace Barter. Congregational Hymns
were “My Jesus I Love Thee,” “Safe in the Arms of Jesus” and “I’m a
Child of the King.” Casketbearers were Marvin Hearn, Harris Bettenga,
Dalen Meyer, David Meyer, Lane Tweten, Dustin Fails, Darwin Van Horn
and Gary Jarnagin. Interment was in Bethel Cemetery, Aplington,
Iowa. Redman - Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, Iowa, was in
charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
07/14/03 Tillie Cassmann, age 77, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the
daughter of Dick and Florence Folkers Buss on January 1, 1926, near
Wellsburg in Grundy County, Iowa. She received her education in a
country school near her home. Tillie worked at Rath Packing Co. in
Waterloo where she met Gordon Cassmann. Tillie was united in
marriage with Gordon on January 1, 1948, at the Little Brown Church,
Nashua, Iowa. Through the years, the couple lived in Waterloo,
Greene, Parkersburg, Aredale and Aplington. Tillie had been a
homemaker, a farmer’s wife, a waitress at the Wayside Inn and the
Hilltop Café and had worked in the kitchen at Allen Memorial
Hospital. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church,
Waterloo, Iowa where she taught Bible School, was a member of WELCA
and sang in the church choir. Tillie had volunteered for the
Salvation Army from 1975 to 1989 and at the Senior Nutrition Site,
delivering meals and picking up food. She loved working in her big
garden. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting scarves. She liked to
travel with Gordon to visit her brother while he was in the Air
Force and liked to go on bus trips. Tillie died Sunday, June 29,
2003, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo from natural causes.
She was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers, Donald,
Floyd, Clarence, Harry and Grant Buss. She is survived by her
husband, Gordon Cassmann of Aplington, Iowa; step-mother, Kathleen
Buss, Hampton, Iowa; one sister, Rosella (Marvin) Westendorf,
Tripoli, Iowa; nephew, Michael (Kathy) Westendorf; many nieces and
nephews; five half-sisters, Vera (Dennis) Miller, Omaha, Nebraska;
Linda (Duane) Douglas, Mason City, Iowa; Sally Peterson, Colorado
Springs, Colorado; Dixie (Norman) Neubauer, Omaha, Nebraska and
Kathy (Gary) Leonard, Flacon, Colorado. Funeral Services were held
at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at Our Savior’s Lutheran
Church, Waterloo, Iowa with Rev. Keith Piller and Rev. Arnold
Imbrock officiating. Organist Donna Joens accompanied Congregational
Hymns “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” and “How Great Thou Art.”
Vocalist Candice Bell sang “In The Garden” and “To God Be The
Glory.” Honorary Casketbearers were Paul Eastman, Marvin Rothmeyer
and Erwin Herdahl. Casketbearers were Michael Westendorf, Dean
Kramer Dennis Cassmann, Larry Bolhuis Douglas Cassmann and Garry
Bolhuis. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene, Iowa.
Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of
arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family. Naomi Stevenson, age 98,
of Charles City and formerly from Clarksville, Iowa, was
born the daughter of Ellis Byron and Nettie Beebe Stevenson
on March 25, 1905 in Jackson Township, Butler County, near
Clarksville, Iowa. She attended St. Valentine Country
School, and then graduated as Salutatorian from Clarksville
High School in 1923. She then attended Iowa State Teacher’s
College, now UNI, for two years. She taught school, the
first year in rural Black Hawk County. Later she taught for
several years each in Bristow, Shell Rock and Clarksville.
Naomi worked for a many years as Librarian at the
Clarksville Public Library, a position she took so that she
could stay at home and take care of her parents. Naomi and
her brother, Virgil, moved from Clarksville to their
birthplace and lived there until he retired from farming.
Then in a small camper, Naomi and her brother went to
Tucson, Arizona to visit her sister and her husband and San
Diego, California to visit her brother and his wife for the
winter months. Later they moved to Charles City, Iowa. Naomi
was a member of the Community United Methodist Church in
Clarksville. She was also a member of P.E.O., Chapter IT and
the Order of Eastern Star - Waverly Chapter No. 358. She
liked spending time in the Southwest visiting relatives.
Naomi died Saturday, July 5, 2003, at the Floyd County
Hospital in Charles City from natural causes. She was
preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Grant
Stevenson and one sister, Thelma Ulrich. She is survived by
one brother, Virgil Stevenson, Charles City, Iowa. Memorial
Services are at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at
Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, Iowa, with
inurnment in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa.
Officiating at the service was Pastor Allen Poore-Christensen.
Lola Clark was the organist and vocalists were Allan and
Julie Poore-Christensen. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home,
Clarksville, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be

Glenn W. Allan
07/14/03 Glenn W. Allan, 76, of San Antonio, FL, passed away suddenly on
June 27, 2003 at his summer home in Northern Acres Campground near
Deer River, MN. Glenn was born on July 12, 1926 in Butler County,
Iowa the son of William and Clara (Renning) Allan. He graduated from
Allison High School and attended business school in Waterloo for one
year. Glenn was married to Marilyn Pfaltzgraff in Allison on March
18, 1944. He farmed in the Allison area until retiring from farming
in 1971. He worked for Cedar Valley Farm Service in Allison until
retiring to San Antonio, FL in 1989. Glenn enjoyed racing chariot
ponies, camping, golfing, and spending time with his family. He was
a member of the United Church of Christ in Allison and served on the
church board. He was preceded in death by his parents and eight
brothers and sisters. Glenn is survived by his wife Marilyn of San
Antonio, FL; two daughters: Sally Jo (Jeff) Boomgarden and Linda Rae
(Daryl) Miller, both of San Antonio, FL; and one son Steven Paul
(and his special friend Kathy) of Allison; eight grandchildren;
twelve great grandchildren; two sisters: Maxine (Chris) Hoodjer of
Clarksville, and Ruth Hummel of Allison. A graveside memorial
service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to

07/14/03 Virgil E. Shepard died at Wesley Acres Care Center in Des Moines
on July 2, 2003, from complications of a stroke. He was born on
April 21, 1913 to Winfred C. and Addie E. (Loomer) Shepard. A native
of Allison, Iowa, he graduated from Allison High School, received
his Bachelor’s degree from the State University of Iowa, and his law
degree from the University in 1936, after which he joined his
father’s law firm. He practiced law in Allison for nearly 60 years
and was the President of Butler County Abstract Company. On June 16,
1937, he was married to Muriel Irwin at the Irwin family farm home
in Sac County. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and
was stationed in Hawaii and on Okinawa. He was a member of the
Allison United Church of Christ, a charter member of the Allison
Lions Club and a member of the Allison AmVets. Virgil was a fifty
year member of the Masonic Lodge, the Order of the Eastern Star and
the American Legion. He was a avid woodworker, a licensed amateur
radio operator, and he enjoyed Canadian fishing. Virgil formerly
served on the Allison school board, was an officer of the Butler
County Fair Association for many years, and was a long time
Scoutmaster in Allison. He was also a member of the Iowa State Bar
Association and a member of the Iowa Land Title Association of which
he was a past president. He was a former member of the Iowa State
Fair Association, of which he was also a past president. Virgil is
survived by his two sons: Gene W. Shepard and his wife, Judy, of
Urbandale, and James I. Shepard and his wife, Jean, of Fresno,
California; four grand-children: Scott Shepard and his friend Rene
and Billy Ludwick of Des Moines, Mark Shepard and his wife
Christine, of Urbandale, Julie Pickett and her husband, Joe Pickett,
of Fresno, California, and Jennifer Western and her husband Gary
Western, of Round Lake, Illinois; three great-granddaughters:
Jessica Picket, Jordan Picket, and Marieka Western. He was preceded
in death by his wife in 2001, his parents, his brother, Dana
Shepard, and a brother in infancy. Funeral services were held at
11:00 a.m., Monday, July 7, 2003 at the Allison United Church of
Christ with Rev. Eileen Johnson officiating. Special music was
provided by organist, Mrs. Cecil Radcliffe accompanying soloist,
Dean Uhlenhopp. Final resting place was in the Lynwood Cemetery,
Clarksville, Iowa. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.
H. Robert Renning
07/19/03
H. Robert Renning, age 85, died June 27, 2003, in Payson, AZ. Bob
was born March 14, 1918, in Shell Rock, the son of Henry and Millie
Remington Renning. He attended the Shell Rock schools, graduating in
1935, and attended Wartburg College in Waverly. He left Iowa in
1938, and began a 45 year career with the Bank of America in El
Centro, Brawley, Calipatria, and Big Bear Lake, California. Bob
joined the Army Air Corp May 20, 1942, serving in the South Pacific
and the Philippines. He was discharged November 16, 1945. On May 1,
1948, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Irwin in Yuma, AZ. In
1989 the couple moved to Payson to be close to their sons. Bob is
survived by his wife, Phyllis, two sons: Robert (Gail) of Glendale,
AZ and Roy (Krista) of Flagstaff, AZ; five grandchildren: Chris,
Chad, Hayden, Kyle and Natalie; and a sister Dorothy Lenius of Shell
Rock. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Carol
Lee, and two half brothers, Clint and Roger Renning. Memorial
services were held July 1 at the Payson United Methodist Church with
inurnment at a later date in the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery,
Phoenix, AZ.
Marlys Gallmeyer
Marlys Gallmeyer, age 66, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the
daughter of Floyd and Ethel Sherburne Brandos on May 30,
1937, in Waterloo, Iowa. She received her education through
the Clarksville High School. Marlys was united in marriage
to Paul Charles Gallmeyer on June 14, 1956, in Missouri. She
lived her life in the Clarksville area and was a homemaker.
Marlys died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at Cedar Valley Hospice
Home in Waterloo, Iowa, of complications of cancer. She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul
Gallmeyer on September 27, 1993; two infant children and a
half-brother, Roy Brandos. She is survived by nine sons,
Chuck Gallmeyer, Minnesota; Mike Gallmeyer, Des Moines,
Iowa; Steven Gallmeyer, Shell Rock, Iowa; Tony Gallmeyer,
Clarksville, Iowa; Dan Gallmeyer, Clarksville, Iowa; Jeff
Gallmeyer, Newton, Iowa; Dave Gallmeyer and friend Emily,
Clarksville; Matthew (Traci) Gallmeyer, Allison, Iowa, and
Tim Gallmeyer, Clarksville, Iowa; three daughters, Molly
(Bob) Phelps, Shell Rock, Iowa; Linda Gallmeyer and her
friend, Pat Smith, Clarksville, Iowa; and Ann (Bill) Ruzicka,
Charles City, Iowa; seventeen grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren; one brother, Ronald Brandos, Waverly,
Iowa; one sister, Betty (friend, Leon) Norton, Waterloo,

at the Church of Christ in Clarksville with Pastor Val
Swinton officiating. Organist Jan Scally accompanied hymns
“Amazing Grace” and “On Eagle’s Wings.” Special music was
“Tears In Heaven.” Casketbearers were Tony Gallmeyer, Pat
Smith, David Gallmeyer, Michael Raymond, Matthew Gallmeyer
and Leon Voshell. Honorary Casketbearers were Steven
Gallmeyer, Dan Gallmeyer, Timmy Gallmeyer and Bill Ruzicka.
Burial was in Lowell Cemetery, rural Clarksville, Iowa.

07/19/03 Cathy S. Krausman, 36, of Grundy Center, died at her
home on Tuesday, July 8, 2003, as the result of a tree
cutting accident. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM,
Friday, July 11 at the First Presbyterian Church in
Grundy Center with Pastor Daniel C. Graham officiating.
Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy
Center. Visitation is from 4:00 - 8:00 PM on Thursday at
Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center with her

Grundy National Bank. Cathy was born August 14, 1966 in
Landstuhl, Germany, daughter of Richard Lee and Mary Ann
(Luhring) Van Heiden, while Richard was serving with the
military in Germany. Her family returned to the United
States when she was one, and she was raised in Ackley
graduating from Ackley-Geneva High School in 1985. She
attended Hawkeye Tech becoming certified as a dental
assistant. On August 30, 1986 she was united in marriage
to Larry Lee Krausman and they eventually made their
home at Grundy Center. She had worked for 10 years as a
dental assistant at several dental offices in Cedar
Falls and then for one year for the Grundy Center School
District. She was presently working for Bacon Veneer
Company in Grundy Center where she had been employed for
about one year. She was a member of the First
Presbyterian Church of Grundy Center where she was
actively involved with their children’s programs and was
involved as an overseer at the Community Wellness Center
located at the Grundy Center High School. She enjoyed
horseback riding, sunbathing, coaching her daughter’s
soccer team, and especially enjoyed taking care of her
family. Cathy is survive by her husband, Larry;
nine-year-old daughter, Meghan; four-year-old son,
Jared; mother and step-father, Mary Ann and Darrell
Danger of Newton; father and step-mother, Richard and
Victoria Van Heiden of Steamboat Rock; sisters, Rae Jean
White of Marshalltown, Shawn (Curt) Springer of Newton,
and Tonia (Ronald) Strait of Kennewick, Washington;
brothers, Dale Van Heiden of Mason City, Darrell (Susan)
Danger Jr. of Liberty Hill, Texas, and Marcus Danger of
Newton. Preceding her in death were her maternal
grandparents, Johann and Henrietta Luhring; and paternal
grandparents, Ben and Alice Van Heiden.

(Mort) Morton E. J. (Mort) Morton, of Coulter, passed
away peacefully, July 10, 2003, at the
Hampton Health Care Center. Funeral services
were held Monday, July 14, at the Nazareth
Lutheran Church, Coulter at 10:30 a.m. with
Pastor Mary Peterson and Pastor Dick Parker
presiding. Edward Jr. Morton was born July
2, 1928, near Coulter to Myrtle and Ed
Morton. He was baptized and confirmed in the
Nazareth Lutheran Church. E. J. was a small
child when his parents moved to Belmond.
Some years later he and his family moved
back to Coulter where he lived all his life.
Mort attended the Coulter school and
graduated from the Franklin Consolidated
School of Latimer in 1946. He sang in the
choir and the boy’s quartet. He participated
in all sports. He also was very active in
the Boy Scouts. On April 19, 1947, he
married E. Jeane Campbell in Coulter. To
this union, eight children were born. He
worked at various pursuits as time
progressed. He took training to become a
salesman and technician for both the Surge
and Chore Boy Milkers. He started his
business in 1957 with a $50.00 paycheck. His
brother-in-law signed a note and with the
help of a trusting banker, he was in
business. In 1958 he founded Mort’s Pump &
Plumbing Company. It expanded rapidly and
has included all family members at times as
well as outside help. They gave 24 hour
service for emergency situations. His roster
of achievements was many. He served 2 terms
on the Coulter City Council and was the
Mayor of Coulter for 2 terms. In 1980 he
chaired the Senate review committee for the
Iowa Water Well Association in Des Moines.
In 1984, he was awarded the “Ber Zander”
award - the highest and most prestigious
award given by the Iowa Water Well industry.
He was also one of the five original
trustees of the Hampton Neighborhood Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jeane,; one
daughter, Priscilla Morton Eddy and husband
Joel of Latimer and seven sons: Kent and
Chris Morton of Latimer, Robert and Jan
Morton of Iowa Falls, Reginald and Jane
Morton of Hampton, Seth Morton of Coulter,
Jason and Teresa Morton of Iowa Falls, Tracy
Morton and Norma Allen of Coulter;
daughter-in-law Jerri Jean Morton of
California; seventeen grand-children, and
five great grandchildren. He is also
survived by one brother, Sanford Morton of
Coulter and four sisters: Peggy (Mac)
Guldberg, Coulter; Dixie (David) Jurgens,
Marion, Marlene (Herb) Wheeler, Hubbard; and
Amelia Tate of Illinois. He was preceded in
death by one son, Lance; one brother,
Dallas, and his parents. In lieu of flowers,
the family has requested memorials be
directed to Hospice of North Iowa or to the
E. J. Morton Memorial Fund which will be
given to area churches. Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
07/19/03 Shirley Irene Krueger, age 78, of
Marshalltown and formerly of
Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter
of Earl and Doris Eastman Grendell
September 3, 1924, in Newburg, Maine.
She graduated from Frankfort, Maine High
School. She served in the U.S. Army from
1943 through 1945 and was a veteran of
World War II where she served in the
W.A.C. as a stock clerk in the medical
division. Shirley was united in marriage
with Leo Petitt on August 6, 1945 in
Taunton, Massachusetts. The couple lived
in Fredericksburg, Iowa from 1945 until
1964. They moved to Clarksville in 1964.
Shirley and Leo were later divorced. She
married Bud Krueger and they were later
divorced. She was a life member of Iowa
First Chapter 98 of Women’s Arm Corps
and a life member of AMVET Auxiliary,
Post #30. She was a life member of the
Disabled Veterans Chapter 20, a charter
member of the Women’s Memorial, a life
member of Veterans of Foreign War Ladies
Auxiliary and a life member of the
AMVETs. Shirley was a homemaker during
her marriage and loved to sew, work on
puzzles, do crafts, collect Amish dolls
and make quilts. She donated quilts to
church and other organizations. She
enjoyed helping others at the Veteran’s
Home Library and with the flower show
there. Shirley died Sunday, July 13,
2003, at the Marshalltown Medical &
Surgical Center in Marshalltown, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her first
husband, Leo Pettit and second husband,
Bud Krueger; her parents; one brother,
Witt Grendell and one sister, Olena
Anderson. She is survived by two
daughters, Sherry (Richard) Reints,
Clarksville, Iowa and Donna, (Richard)
Lindloff, Clarksville, Iowa and four
grandchildren, Kevin Reints and special
friend, Dawn Eiklenborg; Tim (Jessie)
Reints; Lori (Stacy) Shiver; and Larry

He was born April 25, 1943, in
Clarksville, Iowa, son of Jake and
Emma DeGroote. He married Dottye
Vosburgh on August 1, 1966 in Sioux
Falls, South Dakota. Wally graduated
in 1961 from the Clarskville High
School. After graduation, he worked
for White Farm in Charles City. In
1975 they moved to San Diego,
California. While living in
California he owned his own
construction business. Two years ago
he and Dottye moved to Golden
Valley, Arizona. He is survived by
his wife, Dottye; three sons: Todd
(Charlotte) Vosburgh of Elcajon,
California, Jason (Debbie) DeGroote
of Elcajon, California, and Shane
(Sarah) DeGroote of San Diego,
California; two daughters: Shelley

Kansas since then. He was a
mechanic and truck driver.
Steven passed away Monday, July
7, 2003, at Olathe Medical
Center. He was preceded in death
by his father, Harold Hurd and
his mother, Evenly Marie Rover.
He is survived by two sons,
Jason and Jeremy Hurd, both of
Olathe, Kansas; one brother, Dan
Hurd, Houston, Texas; two
sisters, Judy Rogers, Kansas
City, Kansas and Shirley Frey,

Lawrence Francis Sawvel, age
59, of Clarksville, Iowa,
was born the son of Donald
and Katherine Hillier Sawvel
March 11, 1944 in Dubuque,
Iowa. He attended Jefferson
Jr. High School and later
completed his GED in the
service. He was a veteran of
the Vietnam War, having
served there in the U.S.
Army. Lawrence was united in
marriage with Pamela Bar on
June 19, 1969, at St. John’s
Lutheran Church, Dubuque,
Iowa. He lived in Dubuque
for 40 years where he worked
on the river boats. He was a
tanker man for Ingram
Bardege Co. He was also
employed at Loras Collage
and the Dubuque Water
Department. He moved to
Clarksville in 2000. He was
a member of the Tri-State
Vietnam Veteran’s Club of
Dubuque. Lawrence enjoyed
hunting, fishing and
camping. Lawrence died at
his home in Clarksville on
July 11, 2003, of
complications of cancer. He
was preceded in death by his
father, Donald Sawvel. He is
survived by his wife, Pam
Sawvel of Clarksville, Iowa;
three sons, Cory Sawvel,

Terpstra, age 56, of
Parkersburg, Iowa, was
born the son of Ralph
Louis and Bessie (DeVries)
Terpstra on July 1,
1947, at the Allen
Memorial Hospital in
Waterloo, Iowa. He was
baptized on February 8,
1948, at the Austinville
Christian Reformed
Church. He graduated
from the Ackley-Geneva
High School in 1965.
George was a member of
the Christian Reformed
Church in Parkersburg
since 1973 where he had
been a deacon. On
February 6, 1971, George
was united in marriage
with Brenda Kathleen
Aswegen at the Bethel
Lutheran Church in
Parkersburg. They have
made their home at 717
Conn Street in
Parkersburg since then.
George was employed by
the Iowa State Highway
Commission out of the
Parkersburg State Shed,
and later at Universal
Industries in Cedar
Falls. From June, 1982,
through December, 1988,
he drove semi truck for
Ackley Food Processors.
He purchased a semi
truck and leased to
Decker Trucklines of
Fort Dodge, Iowa from
May, 1989 through July,
1999. Since July, 1999,
until the present, he
has been leased with
Smithway Motor Xpress
also in Fort Dodge,
Iowa, but cancer forced
him to stop driving in
August, 2002. George so
loved driving truck and
seeing this great
country of the USA. On
his 55th birthday, July
1, 2002, he happily
reached his 2,000,000th
mile truck driving. He
loved helping his
children, playing with
his grandchildren,
creating gardens for
Brenda, watching Nascar
racing, reading and
laughing. He was a
member of the
Parkersburg Sons of the
American Legion and
helped many years with
the Avenue of Flags in
Parkersburg. At 2:25
p.m., Friday, July 18,
2003, George died at his
home from complications
of his cancer in the
loving arms of his
family. He reached the
age of 56 years and 17
days. George is survived
by his wife, Brenda
Terpstra of Parkersburg;
two daughters, Wendi
Diane Terpstra and her
children, Emily Ann and
Jacob Lee of Bristow;
Shari Lynn and her
husband, Robert Andrew
Thies of Ankeny; his
parents, Ralph and
Bessie Terpstra of
Ackley; three brothers,
Robert Terpstra and his
wife, Karen, of Ames,
Iowa; Calvin Terpstra of
