Paul Frederick Voss
08/03/03 Paul Frederick Voss, age 88, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born
February 19, 1915, the son of Frederick and Melusine Nordman Voss in
Clarksville, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel United
Church of Christ in Clarksville. He graduated from Clarksville High
School in 1932 and attended Wartburg College for one semester. Paul
was united in marriage with Dorothy Pauline Kilson on June 27, 1937,
at the Community Church in Clarksville. He owned and operated Voss
Milling Company in Clarksville for 40 years, retiring in 1981. He
was a member of Community United Methodist Church where he had
served on every board of the church. Paul was a 45-year member of
the Clarksville Lions Club and a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge. He
was a 51-year member of the Clarksville Fire Department in which he
had served as the Fire Chief. He had served on the Clarksville City
Council through which he helped plan the Centennial celebration and
was instrumental in development of Lynwood Cemetery. Paul enjoyed
going to Clear Lake boating. He liked music, cars, playing Bridge,
500 and Gin Rummy with friends. In the early years, he loved to go
dancing. Paul was an avid Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan. His greatest
interest was his family and grandchildren. Paul died Tuesday, July
22, 2003 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. He was
preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Melusine Voss. He is
survived by his wife, Pauline Voss, Clarksville, Iowa; one son,
Jerry (JoAnn) Voss, Clarksville, Iowa; one daughter, Paula (Dick)
Grant, Waverly, Iowa; five grandchildren, Bryan (Karla) Voss, Cindy
Voss, Jason (Jennifer) Grant, Jennifer Grant and Carlin (Kim)
French; and five great-grandchildren, Justin and Wesley Voss, and
Brandon, Abby and Gavin French. Funeral Services were held at 1:30
p.m., Friday, July 25, 2003, at the Community United Methodist
Church, Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor Allen Poore-Christensen
officiating. Organist was Lola Clark. Vocalists Allen and Julie
Poore-Christensen sang “Lord’s Prayer,” “His Eye Is On the Sparrow”
and “In the Garden.” Congregational Hymns were “How Great Thou Art”
and “Amazing Grace.” Casketbearers were Larry Backer, Fred Backer,
Charles Backer, Todd Backer, Chris Backer, and Fred Kelm. Honorary
Casketbearers were members of the Clarksville Fire Department.
Interment was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa.
Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, was in charge of

07/26/03 Jeanette T. Perkins, age 99, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the
daughter of John and Hiekelina (Stoppelmoor) Krull on August 26,
1903, in rural Butler County, near Austinville, Iowa. She received
her education in a rural country school near her home. In 1924
Jeanette Krull was united in marriage with Walter Perkins. They made
their home in Forte Dodge, Iowa and through the years they also
lived in Eagle Grove, Iowa and then moved to Clarksville while
Walter was working with the railroad. Jeanette was a loving wife and
mother and she had several local domestic jobs. Walter died in 1962.
On February 18, 1984, Jeanette was married to Don Davis in Des
Moines, Iowa. Jeanette was a member of the Community United
Methodist Church in Clarksville. She was a member of card club, the
Rebecca Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star, all of which she held
most of the offices. She also was active in numerous other community
organizations and activities. Jeanette died on Thursday, July 17,
2003, at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville of natural
causes. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Walter Perkins in
1962, and Don Davis in 2000; two sons, Richard in infancy and
Wallace Perkins in 1986; five brothers, Albert, Henry, Siebert,
Rudolph and Ayelt Krull; and one sister, Tillie Merril. Jeanette is
survived by a daughter-in-law, Lillian Perkins of Cedar Rapids,
Iowa; three grandchildren, Kelly Perkins, Cedar Rapids; Holly
Niehaus, Oakridge, Tennessee and Tracy Perkins, Arlington Heights,
Illinois; four great-grandchildren; one brother, John Krull of
Clarksville; and two sisters, Diane Patton and Lila Perkins both of
Clarksville. Funeral Services were held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, July
20, 2003, at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, Iowa with
Pastor Allen Poore-Christensen officiating. Organist Lola Clark
accompanied soloists Pastor Allen Poore-Christensen who sang “Hymn
of Promise” and Betty Whitney who sang “In The Garden.” Inurnment at
a later date in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa. Instead of
flowers, the family requests visits be made to those in nursing
homes. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
DILLY Maxine Lucille Dilly 08/09/03 DILLY Maxine Lucille Dilly, age 72, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Ralph and Thema Austin Scribner on September 16, 1930, in Hutchinson, Kansas. She received her education the Clarksville Community School. Maxine was united in marriage with Robert Dilly on August 15, 1948, at the Community Church in Clarksville, Iowa. The couple farmed south of Clarksville where Maxine was a farm partner and a homemaker. She was always very willing to take part in many church and community activities. She very much enjoyed quilting, gardening and working with children. Bob and Maxine also enjoyed going on bus tours. Maxine died Friday, August 1, 2003, at the Waverly Municipal Hospital, Waverly, Iowa, of cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Thema Scribner and a sister, Ramona Alsup. She is survived by her husband, Robert of Clarksville; one son, David (Loreli) Dilly, Shell Rock, Iowa; four daughters, Barbara Dilly, Shell Rock, Iowa/Omaha, Nebraska; Marcella Best, Omaha, Nebraska; Lorraine (Ron) Hamel, Madrid, Iowa, and Lois (Mike) Miller, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ron (Carolyn) Scribner, Grand Junction, Colorado and Jack Scribner, Odessa, Washington. Funeral Services were held Monday, August 4, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor Edgar Zelle officiating. Organist was Lois Roose. Soloist was her granddaughter, Michelle Weinberg who sang “Precious Lord Take My Hand.” Congregational hymns were “There’s A Wideness in God’s Mercy,” and “Have Thine Own Way, Lord.” Casketbearers were her grandchildren Joshua Dilly, Evan Hamel, Dainen Dilly, Erika Hamel, Ashley Miller and Landon Miller. 08/09/03 Funeral services for Earl J. Herman, 83, of Greene, were held
Tuesday, August 5, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene with Rev.
Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Earl John Herman was born October 29, 1919, in rural Union Township,
near Roseville, Floyd County, a son of Peter Joseph and Mary
Catherine (Sinnwell) Hermann, and died Friday, August 1, 2003, at
North Iowa Mercy East Campus in Mason City. He received his
education in the rural Floyd County Schools and attended the Sacred
Heart Academy in Greene. As a young man he farmed with his father.
On February 6, 1943, he was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Smith
at the Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. Earl and
Shirley farmed in the Greene area for 42 years before retiring and
moving into town. Earl’s interests included shooting pool, playing
cards, fishing in Canada and deer hunting. He was always willing to
help out at the Fish Frys at the Church and with the Sportsman’s
Club. He will be remembered giving rides to people in town with his
Hackney Trotter and painted buggy. He was an accomplished Harmonica
Player who enjoyed giving concerts to those wanting to listen, and
was awarded third place in the Harmonica Contest at the Iowa State
Fair in 2002. Those thankful for having shared this life of such a
good and honest man include his loving wife of sixty years: Shirley
of Greene; his children: Carol (Jim) Weaver of Rockwell, Beverly
(Gary) Boveia of Waverly, Connie (Doug) Litterer of Greene, Ronnie
(Kathy) Herman of Greene; ten grandchildren: Sara Adelmund, Tracy
Martzahn, Kristy Hovde, Michele Casey, Brenda Reed, Chad Herman,
Andres Herman, Shawn Litterer, Tony Boveia, Joe Boveia; seven
great-grandchildren; one sister: Catherine Wefel of Waverly; and
sister-in-law: Deon Herman of Osage. He was preceded in death by his
parents, three sisters: Delores Herman, Irene Uetz, Bernice Metz;
one brother: Art Herman; and grandson: Derek A. Herman. Those

Bea Vogel
Bea Vogel, 93, of Villa del Sol Care Center, and former
resident of Bickford Cottage, Hampton and Dumont, Iowa, died
Monday, July 28, 2003 at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical
Center, Marshalltown. Funeral services were held at 11:00
a.m. on Thursday, July 31, 2003, at the United Methodist
Church in Hampton with Revs. Jennfier Daniel and Jerry
Miller, officiating. Interment followed services in the
Dumont Cemetery. Memorials may be directed in her name for

Beatrice Matilda Nelson was born on May 23, 1910 in Albert
City, Iowa, the daughter of Olof and Sigrid Bena Nelson.
Raised and educated in the area of her birth, she graduated
from the Albert City High School with the class of 1929.
Following graduation, she attended the University of
Northern Iowa for one year. On May 10, 1930, Bea was united
in marriage to Richard Henry Vogel in Vinton, Iowa. In 1941,
they moved to Dumont, Iowa to operate the Vogel Furniture
and Funeral Home. In 1987 they moved to Hampton. Bea was
very active in many organizations in the Butler and Franklin
County areas over the years. She was a fifty year member of
the Franklin Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star where she
served as past Worthy Matron, and fifty year member of the
Hampton Women’s Club. She also served the committee women
with the Butler County Republican Party for many years. Bea
is survived by her husband Richard “Dick” Vogel of
Marshalltown; son: Trent (Judy) Vogel of Marshalltown;
daughter: Sharyn Bamber of Los Angeles, California; four
grandchildren: Richard “Rick” Vogel of Marshalltown, Kim
Montalvo of Arlington, Texas, Julie King of Forney, Texas,
and George Bamber of Los Angeles, California; nine
great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. She was
preceded in death by her parents, sister Doris Johnson, and
three brothers, Lowell, Howard and Earl Nelson. Pursel-Davis

08/18/03 William J. Becker, 72, of Waterloo, died Sunday, August 10, at
Allen Hospital of natural causes. Services will be held at 10:30
a.m. Wednesday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, St. Mary’s
Worship Center, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
John A. Meyer John A. Meyer, age 84, of Aplington, formerly of
Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Albert R. and Marie (Bierman)
Meyer on November 22, 1918, in rural Aplington, Iowa. He
received his education and graduated from the Aplington High
School in 1936. John was united in marriage with Frances
Pearl Kannegieter on December 18, 1942, on her parents’ home
near Wellsburg, Iowa. They made their home and began farming
near Bristow, Iowa. In 1949 they moved to the home farm
place north of Aplington. Following their retirement, they
moved to their new home in Parkersburg in 1982. John became
a resident of Maple Manor Village in August of 2000, a few
years after Frances passed away. John was a faithful member
through the years of the Bristow Reformed Church, First
Reformed Church of Aplington and Hope Reformed Church of
Parkersburg where he served at various times on the
Consistery, as a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent,
choir member, Choir Director, and served on the Mission
Board. He active in the community where he participated on
the FS Board, Aplington School Board Advisory Council,
Kesley Creamery Board, Music Community Group and the
Bicentennial Committee. In his spare time he enjoyed music,
his work and reading especially his Bible. On Saturday,
August 9, 2003, John died at the Maple Manor Village in
Aplington from complication of metastasic cancer of the
liver. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Meyer
on December 25, 1997; one grandson, Warren Lee Meyer on
August 12, 1973; his parents; three sisters, Berdena Harken,
Statina Junker and Lydia Boelman; and two brothers, Ralph
and Ralph Stado Meyer. John is survived by two sons, Ronald
(Janis) Meyer of Batesville, AR, and David (Diane) Meyer of
Aplington, IA; four daughters, Jeannette (Richard) Griessel
of Crawfordsville, IA, Jeanne (John) Camp of Kenai, AK, Mary
(Eric) Dietrich of Aplington, IA, Nancy (John) Claassen of
Iowa City, IA; 16 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; one
sister, Lois (Harley) Hartman of Parkersburg; and one
sister-in-law, Clarice Meyer of Erie, Illinois. Funeral
Services were at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 12, 2003 at Hope
Reformed Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Neal Ooms
officiating. Organist John Claassen accompanied
Congregational Hymns “Wonderful Grace of Jesus,” “When the
Role is Called Up Yonder” and “How Great Thou Art.”
Casketbearers were Derek Dietrich, Mark Rhodes, Jason Meyer,
Brian Claassen, Eric Dietrich, and Richard Griessel.
Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. The

08/18/03 Iva M. Bennett, 83, of New Hartford, Iowa, died on
Thursday, August 7, 2003, at Allen Memorial Hospital in
Waterloo, Iowa, from complications of pneumonia. Iva was
born on December 19, 1919, on a farm near Cedar Falls,
Iowa, the daughter of Elam J. and Annis M. (Bush) Hill.
The family moved to Tripoli, Iowa, in 1929, where Iva
attended rural schools, graduating from the eighth
grade. She worked at various jobs of being a hired girl,
later working at a produce company washing and candling
eggs. In August of 1939, she attended Waterloo School of
Beauty graduating in May of 1940. She then came to New
Hartford to work at Brocka’s Barber and Beauty Shop,
later owning the beauty shop. In August of 1941, she was
united in marriage to Welby A. Rasmussen and the couple
made their home in Cedar Falls in January of 1942. Welby
died in October of 1946. Iva later married Robert L.
Eaton and moved to the Chicago, Illinois area in January
of 1948. The were later divorced. She worked at various
factories and in June of 1960, she was united in
marriage to Carl Bennett. Carl died in March of 1962 and
Iva moved back to New Hartford in July of that year. In
July of 1971, she went to work at Sartori Memorial
Hospital in Cedar Falls, until she retired in 1983. She
was a member of the United Methodist Church in New
Hartford. She was also a member of the New Hartford
Anchor Rebekah #46. Iva is survived by her four
daughters, Eunice Campbell, Janet (Tim) Wilcox , Vivien
(Jim) Brookman all of Waterloo and Katherine (John)
Farrell of Des Moines; 9 grandchildren; 19 great
grandchildren; three sisters, Doris Homeister of
Missouri, Elizabeth Davis of Arkansas, Ruby Rand of
Waterloo; and three brothers, Harold Hill and Walter
Hill both of Minnesota, Edwin Hill of Ellsworth. She was
preceded in death by her parents; a son, Eugene
Rasmussen in 1996; one brother and two sisters. Funeral
services will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2003 at
2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in New
Hartford, with Rev. Sarah L. Darter officiating. Burial
will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in New Hartford. Visitation
will be held on Friday from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at
the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock, where
there will be a public Rebekah service at 7:00 P.M.

08/18/03 Pastor Herold Heupel, age 71, of Clarksville,
Iowa, was born the son of Pastor Rudolph and Ida (Loock)
Heupel on January 3, 1932, in New Leipzig, North
Dakota. He was baptized into the Christian faith on
January 3, 1932, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran
Church, rural New Leipzig, North Dakota. He was
confirmed on July 15, 1945, at the same church where
his baptism occurred Herold received his early
education from a rural country school near his home.
He graduated from Hebron High School in Hebron,
North Dakota in 1949. Herold continued his education
and graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa
in 1953 and on May 29, 1957, he graduated from
Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. On June 19,
1952, Herold was united in marriage with Arlen Joan
Birkmaier at St. John E. & R. Church in Hebron,
North Dakota. He interned at First Lutheran Church,
Waterloo, Iowa from June 1, 1955, to May 31, 1956.
Herold was ordained into the Ministry on June 9,
1957, at Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley, North Dakota
and was Installed June 23, 1957, at a mission
church, Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkader, Iowa. He
was installed June 6, 1964 at S. John Lutheran at
Palmer, Iowa and was installed October 17, 1976 at
S. Paul Lutheran at Lakota, Iowa. He retired on June
15, 1997 They moved to Clarksville, Iowa and became
members of St. John Lutheran Church, where he
enjoyed being active in the choir. Herold was a
member of the Clarksville Lions Club and enjoyed a
life time of golfing. Herold died on Friday, August
8, 2003, at the Waverly Municipal Hospital in
Waverly, Iowa, of a stroke. He was preceded in death
by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.
Herold is survived by his wife, Arlen of
Clarksville; one son, Jon (Sue) Heupel of Shell
Rock, Iowa; one daughter, Cathy (Roy) Canfield,
Roseville, Minnesota; four granddaughters, Aubrey,
Melissa, Sarabeth and Margaret; one brother, Pastor
Herman Heupel of Frost, Minnesota; and one sister,
Betty Baeseler of New Leipzig, North Dakota.
08/18/03 Anna B. Meyer, 92, of Waverly, Iowa, died on
Sunday morning, August 10, 2003, at the Bartels
Lutheran Retirment Community of natural causes.
Anna was born on October 31, 1910, in Denver,
Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Marie (Hein)
Bast. She was baptized in St. Peter Lutheran
Church in Denver, on November 20, 1910, by Rev.
F. Schoenbohm, and was confirmed in the same
church on April 13, 1924, also by Rev.
Schoenbohm. She attended school in Denver and on
February 10, 1929, she was united in marriage to
Kurt W. Meyer in Denver. In May of 1929, the
couple moved to Waverly, Iowa. In 1936, Kurt
opened his own shop in Waverly and Anna became
bookkeeper for the business. Kurt died on June
24, 1985. Anna continued living in her home
until moving to the Eichhorn Haus at Bartels
Lutheran Retirement Community in October of
1987. Anna was a longtime member of St. Paul’s
Lutheran Church in Waverly. She was
past-president of the St. Paul’s Women’s
Society, and was active in the afternoon circles
of St. Paul’s W.E.L.C.A. As her children grew
up, Anna was a Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout
Den Mother. She was also active in the Bartels
Lutheran Home Auxiliary, serving as secretary
for a number of years. Anna is survived by two
daughters; Marie Zelle of Waverly, Iowa,
Margaret (Peg) Poppen and her husband, Lynn of
Charles City, Iowa, four sons; Herbert Meyer and
his wife, Claudette of Waverly, Iowa, Herold
Meyer and his wife, Arlene of Onawa, Iowa, Carl
Meyer and his wife, Marvelyn of Clarksville,
Iowa, and John Meyer and his wife, Barbara of
Fairfield, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 16 great
grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and
one sister, Wilma Krogstad of Askov, Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband, Kurt; her daughter, Laura Gray; one
grandson; one granddaughter; one great
granddaughter; a brother, William Bast and a
sister, Hertha Crandall. Funeral services will
be held on Thursday, August 14, 2003, at 10:30
a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly,
with Pastor Joyce Sandberg officiating. Burial
will be in the Harlington Cemetery in Waverly.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2:00
p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Good Shepherd
Chapel, Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community
and also on Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00
p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in
Waverly. Friends may also call for an hour
before services on Thursday at the church.

08/18/03 Funeral services for Norma D. Voigts, 79,
of 407 North High Street, Greene, were held
Tuesday, August 12, 2003, at St. John’s
Lutheran Church, Vilmar, rural Greene, with
Pastor Mark Walker officiating. Burial was
in the South Vilmar Cemetery. Reid¹s Funeral
Chapel, Greene, was in charge of
arrangements. Norma D. Blaas was born August
27, 1923, in West Point Township, Butler
County, a daughter of Emil and Melinda (Kammeyer)
Blaas, and died Friday, August 8, 2003, at
the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. She
was baptized September 19, 1923, and
confirmed a member of St. John’s Lutheran
Church at Vilmar April 2, 1939. From the
farms where she grew up to the places where
she and her husband farmed, Norma was always
able to see the Vilmar church steeple. On
October 4, 1942, she was united in marriage
to Marvin John Voigts at Vilmar. They
purchased her parents¹ farm and started
farming in 1946. Norma was a homemaker and
farm wife who loved gardening, sewing for
the girls when they were little, and enjoyed
going fishing with her husband. Following
their retirement in 1983 they moved into
Greene, where Norma continued to plant lots
of vegetables and flowers. Marvin and Norma
went fishing in Canada and later for many
years in Minnesota. They went to many dances
in Janesville, Waterloo, and the Surf
Ballroom in Clear Lake. For 14 years they
wintered in the “Valley” in Texas in various
trailer parks and campgrounds where they
enjoyed playing cards with the neighbors and
participating in the dances. They
participated in the Small Group Bible Study
for over twenty years. She belonged to the
Neighborhood Birthday Club, and was involved
in various women’s church activities. Living
family members include her two daughters:
Bonnie Hiatt of West Des Moines, and JoAnn
(Roger) Keeler of Waverly; four
grandchildren: Michelle Gabbard of St.
Michael, MN, Billy (Amy) Wilson of Waverly,
Kelly Hiatt of San Diego, CA, and Krissy
(Jim) Annexstad of Fairbanks, AK; four
great-grandchildren: Kirsten, Jacob and
Jeremy Gabbard; and Caroline Annexstad. She
is also survived by a special friend: Mr.
Ardean Landers of Greene. She was preceded
in death by her parents, and her husband on
July 3, 1997. Those planning an expression

Iowa, passed away August 19, 2003 at
the Franklin General Hospital in
Hampton, Iowa. Claude was born on
May 7, 1920 in Chickasaw County,
Iowa to Charles and Lizzy (Gerken)
Moody. He attended rural New Hampton
Schools. Claude was married to
Frances Mahnesmith on July 4, 1942
in Charles City, Iowa. Claude farmed
all his life where he enjoyed
raising livestock, especially
cattle. He also had a special love
for his dog Sweetie. Claude also
enjoyed fishing and hunting. He is
survived by his wife Frances Moody
of Dumont, Iowa and several nieces
and nephews. He was preceded in
death by his parents, two brothers

Iowa passed away August 12, 2003
at the Bartels Lutheran Home in
Waverly, Iowa. She was born
February 11, 1910 in Allison,
Iowa to Arnold and Grace (Westerman)
Buss. Edna attended Allison
Schools. She married George
Jensen on August 28, 1929, and
they had one daughter Georgene.
George passed away in 1965, and
she remarried Lester Williams on
June 20, 1969 in Allison. Edna
was a homemaker and worked for
many years at the Allison
Clothing Center. She was a
member of Allison United Church
of Christ in Allison, and was
active in the church when she
was able. She enjoyed crocheting
and gardening. Survivors include
her husband Lester Williams of
Allison; daughter Georgene Clark
of Allison; Step daughter
Pauline Cruz of Colorado
Springs, Colorado; sister Grace
Allison of Parkersburg and one
step grandchild. She was
preceded in death by her

born on July 11, 1921 in

He graduated from
Clarksville High School. He
served in the Army during
World War II and received
the Purple Heart, Silver
Star and five Major Battle
Stars. Kenneth was married
to Annette Fleshner on
October 7, 1943 in Waterloo,
Iowa. Kenneth owned and
operated Culligan Water
Conditioning in Allison. He
was a member of the St.
James Lutheran Church in
Allison. Kenneth was
involved on several
committees over the years,
some of which include Butler
County Chairman and Finance
Chairman for the Republican
Party, past Allison School
Board member, Finance
Chairman for the Boy Scouts,
serving on the St. James
Lutheran Church Council,
volunteer for the Allison
ambulance, Charter member of
the Allison Lions Club and
member of the Allison
Commercial Club. He was also
a member of the Allison
AmVets and the American
Legion and served as Allison
Mayor for two terms and a
City Council member. He is
survived by his son Robert
Smith of Dallas, Texas,
daughter Jan Heffron of
Cedar Falls, Iowa, sister
Katherine Cadam of Parker,
Arizona, and one
granddaughter Kelsey Heffron
of Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Kenneth is preceded in death

Phyllis was a loving
wife, mother and
homemaker. While
helping Clarence on
the farm, she was a
waitress at Poppe’s
in Clarksville.
Phyllis faithfully

Christ - Pleasant
Valley. She loved
music and enjoyed
playing the
accordion and the
piano. Phyllis died
on Monday, August
11, 2003, at the

near Aplington,
Iowa, on January
18, 1915, the
first-born child
of Reinhard and
Gepke Mulder
Druvenga. He
attended rural
schools near
Parkersburg and
Renville,
Minnesota,
returning to
Parkersburg at
the age of 18.
He professed his
faith in the
Lord Jesus
Christ in the
Parkersburg
Christian
Reformed Church
in 1934 and has
been a faithful
member since
that time. In
September, 1942,
Joe answered his
nation’s call,
entering the
United States
Army at Camp
Crowder,
Missouri. On
November 28,
1942, he was
united in
marriage to
Alice Irene
Frerichs in
Neosho,
Missouri. The
next 31
consecutive
months were
spent on active
duty in North
Africa and
Italy. He
participated in
military
campaigns in
Naples and Rome,
Italy and in the
northern
Apennine
Mountains. He
received three
bronze stars for
the Italian
campaign and was
honorably
discharged on
October 3, 1945.
After his
discharge from
the Army, Joe
returned to the
Parkersburg area
and engaged in
farming near
Ackley and north
of Parkersburg.
He was employed
in the Physical
Plant at the
University of
Northern Iowa in
Cedar Falls for
twenty years,
retiring in
1980. He also
owned and
operated a
sodding and
landscaping
service in
Parkersburg. Joe
was a member of
the Parkersburg
Christian
Reformed Church.
He was
recognized for
over 56 years of
continuous
membership in
the American
Legion in
Parkersburg. Joe
and his wife
enjoyed
traveling and
considered a
three-week
European tour in
1984 to be a
highlight of
their life. He
was able to
visit and become
acquainted with
three Druivenga
cousins and
their families
who reside in
the province of
Ostfriesland in
Germany. On
Monday, August
11, 2003, Joe
died at the
Cedar Falls
Health Care
Center in Cedar
Falls, Iowa of
natural causes.
He was preceded
in death by his
wife, Alice, in
1997; his
parents, and two
brothers, Henry
Druvenga and
Charles Druvenga.
