Myrtle M.Shorman Funeral services for Myrtle M. Shorman Clark, 86, of 302 North Main, Greene, were held Wednesday, May 28, at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Reid¹s Funeral Chapel of Greene is in charge of arrangements. Myrtle Mae Heichel was born March 9, 1917, at rural Washburn, Black Hawk County, a daughter of Freace and Dagmar (Rasmussen) Heichel, and died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene. She received her education in the Cedar Falls Public Schools and was united in marriage to George Shorman on September 30, 1934, in Princeton, MO. They made their home in Cedar Falls where they owned and operated a Texaco Service Station. In 1945 they moved to Greene where they purchased the Greene Cafe, which they operated until 1949, when they acquired Price’s Grocery Store and made it into a restaurant and bar which was called Shorman’s Place. In 1955 they purchased the Sportsman’s Inn from Max Kent. Following Mr. Shorman’s death on November 21, 1961, she continued to operate the business until 1964. On July 10, 1964, she was united in marriage to Wilson Eldon Clark at her home in Greene. They moved to Northern Wisconsin where they purchased the Chit Chat Resort in Birchwood which they operated until 1973 when they retired to a forty acre farm near Couderay, WI. In 1990 they returned to Greene. Following Mr. Clark’s death on February 16, 1992, she continued to make her home in Greene until entering the Liebe Care Center on June 26, 2001. Myrtle will be remembered as a helpful, caring, and giving individual in her vocations as wife, mother, and business owner. Many will attest to those home cooked meals, desserts, and genuine hospitality to those she served. Her interests included deer hunting, fishing, gardening, and crafts. She also enjoyed bowling. Her family was very important to her, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Those thankful for having shared her life include her daughter whom she lovingly called her “Doll”; Virginia (Stan) Shook of Greene; four grandchildren: Janelle (Jeffrey) Laube, Randal (Sheila) Shook all of Eau Claire, WI, Steven (Kimberly) Shook of Plymouth, MN, Linda Miner of New Brighton, MN; ten grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Jenna, Mikaelah, Benjamin, Sarah, Joseph, John, Ryan, Conor, and Lee; one brother Glade Heichel of Greene and one sister-in-law: Inez Heichel of Waterloo. She leaves to join her husbands, her parents, four brothers: Hershel, Freace “Pete”, Russell, and John Heichel; four sisters: Gladys Morgan, Jane Rogers, Norma Gutknecht, and Mary Brown. 05/31/03 Erwin Winkelman, 83, of 919 2nd Street N.W., Waverly, Iowa, died Monday morning, May 26, 2003, at the Shell Rock Health Care Center, Shell Rock, Iowa, from complication of cancer. Erwin was born on July 17, 1919, in Lafayette Township in Bremer County near Plainfield, Iowa, the son of William L. and Meta (Ringleb) Winkelman. He was baptized on August 3, 1919, at the United Church of Christ - Pleasant Valley, rural Clarksville, and was confirmed on August 5, 1934, at Evangelical Immanuel Church near Clarksville. He attended country school near his home and following his schooling worked for Vern and Wilbur Shield at the lime quarry. He then entered the U.S. Army during WWII on January 1, 1944. Following his discharge on October 31, 1945, Erwin returned to Waverly and continued to work at the Shield lime quarry. In the early 1960’s, Erwin worked at the Self-Help Company, where he helped Vern Shield build one of the first tractors for overseas. In 1968, he went to work at Schield Bantam, retiring in 1983. Following his retirement, Erwin worked part-time at the Waverly Tractor Company. Erwin was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly. He was also a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post # 2208. Erwin enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends. Erwin is survived by his wife, Virginia of Waverly, Iowa; a daughter, Patti Winkelman of Clarksville, Iowa; one son, Mike Winkelman and his wife, Penny of New Hartford, Iowa; 2 grandchildren, David and Matthew Winkelman; and two brothers, Lorenz Winkelman and his wife, Dorlena of Waverly, and Edward Winkelman and his wife, Phyllis of Clear Lake, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Loyd Winkelman; and three sisters, Mable, Mildred and Lois in infancy. Celebration of Life services will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2003 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly, with Pastor Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will be in the Harlington Cemetery in Waverly, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Waverly Amvets Post #79. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and also for an hour before services at the church. 05/31/03 John Adam Anhalt, 83 of Waverly, Iowa passed away on Friday, May 23, 2003 at his residence of a heart attack. John was born on January 26, 1920, the son of Martin and Lula (Ingersol) Anhalt in Waverly, Iowa. He attended a rural school, Lafayette #6, and graduated from Waverly High School. After graduating, John worked as a hired farm hand until entering the military in March of 1942. He served in the 9th Air Force Troop Carrier Command as a welder. In 1945, he was discharged after serving twenty-two months in the European Theatre during WW II. On June 15, 1943, John was united in marriage to Lelah Benning in Waverly, Iowa. The couple began farming northeast of Waverly. They moved to a farm near Clarksville in 1949 and farmed there for twelve years. In 1961, they returned to Waverly to their present farm northwest of Waverly. In 1967, John began working for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service as a bin-site supervisor. They continued to farm, and when the government got out of the grain business in 1974, they farmed in both Waverly and Clarksville. John was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the American Legion Post #176 of Waverly. He enjoyed playing cards, mushroom hunting, fishing, gardening, dancing, feeding his feline friends and visiting with family and friends. Survivors are his wife, Lelah of Waverly, Iowa; daughter, Mary Lou Latwesen and her husband, Vernon of Apple Valley, Minnesota; son, Gene Anhalt and his wife, Carol of Jesup, Iowa; five grandchildren, Jennifer Latwesen and her husband, Rob McGinnis, Michael Latwesen, Jeremy, Paul and Sara Anhalt; great granddaughter, Lauren McGinnis; sister, Marian Meier of Fairbank, Iowa; two brothers, William Anhalt of Walnut Creek, California and Paul Anhalt of Yellville, Arkansas;. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Helen Eighway, Grace Anhalt and Betty Bierman; and by one brother, Robert Anhalt. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, May 27 St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly with Rev. Mike Tauke presiding. 05/31/03 John Gordon Napier, age 74, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Thomas and Marie (Rist) Napier on April 28, 1929, in Ringgold, Georgia. He received his education and graduated from the Ringgold High School. John continued his education at the Saint Bernard College in Colman, Alabama as a brother for two years to become a Monk. In 1949, John was drafted during the Korean War where he served his country in the U.S. Army for four years. On April 10, 1957, John was united in marriage with Jeraldine Walgreen in Ringgold, Georgia. They made their home in Waterloo, Iowa, where he worked at the Rath Packing Plant and later the John Deere Tractor Factory. When he retired in 1991, John and Jan moved to Parkersburg, Iowa. John was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ackley, Iowa, where he served as an usher. In his earlier years and following his retirement, John had a special love of driving semi trucks which he drove through various places across the country. He had many adventures with his family and friends driving his motorized train car. He also enjoyed swimming in the ocean and at the age of 70, he went sky diving. John died Monday, May 19, 2003, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Nick and Tom Napier; and one sister, Mary Jones. John is survived by his wife Jan Napier of Parkersburg; two sons, John Napier of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Arron Cowell still at home of Parkersburg; five daughters, Vicki (Leo) Even of Gilbertville, Iowa, Kim (Matt) Murray of Knoxville, Tennessee, Karen Tyler of Waterloo, Iowa, Pam (Doug) Frost of Woodstock, Illinois and Stephanie (Dan) Christopher of Janesville, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, Sara and Sam Monroe, Chris, Madison and Nate Murray, Peter, Matt and Dan Zimmer, Steve, Liana, Kyle and Mary Frost, Noah Burdorf and Karma Cowell; one brother, Jerry Napier of Chickamauga, Georgia; and two sisters, Anna Meaney of Atlanta, Georgia and Rosa (Pat) Farrell of Ringgold, Georgia. Funeral Services were held 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 23, 2003 St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ackley, Iowa with Father Jim Miller officiating. Organist Pam King accompanied vocalist Jodi Sells. 05/31/03 Gene Jacobs, age 50, of Mason City, Iowa and formerly of
Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son of LeRoy and Leona Stille Jacobs
on January 10, 1953 in Charles City, Iowa. He was baptized and
confirmed in St. John Lutheran Church, Clarksville, Iowa. He
attended school in Clarksville and received his high school diploma
from Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Gene entered the U.S.
Army in November, 1970 and was stationed in Germany. After his
discharge from the Army, Gene lived in various states including
Florida, Colorado, Minnesota and Iowa. He worked in roofing
construction. He enjoyed making fine leather belts, saddles and
wallets. In his spare time, he liked to go fishing and ride Harley
Davidson motorcycles. Gene died Monday, May 19, 2003, at his home in
Mason City, Iowa of natural causes. He was preceded in death by an
infant son, Terry Jacobs, his maternal grandparents, Ed and Elsie
Stille and paternal grandparents, P.A. “Bill” and Ella Jacobs. He is
survived by one son, Wyatt Jacobs, Mason City, Iowa; one grandson,
Brayden; his parents, LeRoy and Leona Jacobs, Clarksville, Iowa; one
brother, Bruce (Karen) Jacobs, Shell Rock, Iowa; one sister, Diane
(Jeff) Johnson, Parkersurg, Iowa; one niece, LeAnn Johnson, four
nephews, Zack (Melissa) Jacobs, Uriah Jacobs, Arend Johnson and
Ethan Johnson. Memorial Services were help 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May
24, 2003 at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville, Iowa with Rev.
David Nelson Officiating. Organist Glenda Timmer lead the following
congregational hymns: “The Old Rugged Cross”, “Amazing Grace” and
“How Great Thou Art.” Military rites were conducted by Clarksville

06/16/03 Gladys I. Schmadeke, 92, formerly of Ridgeway Place,
Waterloo, died of natural causes on Sunday, June 1, 2003. Gladys
was born February 9, 1911, the daughter of Robert P. and Ada I.
(Mead) Ritzman in rural Allison, Iowa. She sold Avon Cosmetics
during the 1960’s. On July 19, 1928, she was united in marriage
to William J. Schmadeke in Clarksville. He died March 13, 1984.
She was a member of Waterloo First United Methodist Church.
Gladys is survived by her daughter: Paula Glass, Waterloo, Iowa:
sons: Donald (Jane) Schmadeke of Coon Rapids Minnesota, Robert
Schmadeke of Urbandale, Iowa, and Gary (Mary Ann) Schmadeke of
Casa Grande, Arizona. She has eleven grandchildren and eleven
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents,
husband, son: Richard, Granddaughter: Pamela Weider, two
brothers: Jack and Glen Ritzman, and four sisters: Mabel Peppler,
Marie Wendt, Velma Faye Bents, and Gail Ritzman. Funeral
services were held on Thursday, June 5, at 10:30 a.m. at First
United Methodist Church, Waterloo. Burial was in Waterloo
Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the First United
Methodist Church, Waterloo or Cedar Valley Hospice. Locke

06/16/03 Phyllis C. Chandler 79, of Allison, Iowa passed away June 4, 2003 at
the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. Phyllis was
born on September 24, 1923 in Charles City, Iowa to Clarence
and Grace (Townsend) Pederson. She graduated from Yankton
High School in Yankton, South Dakota. After graduation,
Phyllis received her RN degree from a nursing college in Des
Moines, Iowa. She married Leon Chandler on October 24, 1944
in Nashua, Iowa. Phyllis was an RN, homemaker and a mother.
She was a member of the Allison United Church of Christ.
Phyllis enjoyed genealogy, soc-ializing and especially
enjoyed spending time with her grand-children and great
grandchildren. Survivors include her three daughters: Karen
and husband Darrell Prange of Allison, Susan Farrell of
Adel, Iowa, and Donna Stanbrough of Allison; a son: Lynn and
wife Kelly Chandler of Portsmouth, Virginia; eleven
grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, one
sister and two granddaughters. Funeral services were held at
1:00 p.m., Monday, June 9, 2003 at the Allison United Church
of Christ with Pastor Eileen Johnson officiating. Special
music was provided by organist, Mrs. Cecil Radcliffe
accompanying soloist, Burton Sprole. Final resting place was
in Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield, Iowa. Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
06/09/03 Harold L. Campbell, 90, of the Community Nursing Home
in Clarksville, Iowa, and formerly of Waverly, Iowa,
died Monday morning, June 2, 2003, at the Waverly
Municipal Hospital of natural causes. Harold L. Campbell
was born on June 9, 1912, in rural Chickasaw County,
Iowa, the son of Samuel & Ida Mae (Reed) Campbell. He
attended school in Waverly, Iowa, graduating from
Waverly High School in 1931. After his schooling, Harold
worked in several area grocery stores in Waverly. On
June 9, 1937, Harold was united in marriage to Margaret
L. McDonough at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waterloo,
Iowa. The couple settled in Charles City, Iowa, for a
year before moving to their home in Waverly. In 1940, he
went to work as a mechanic for Coonradt’s Ford Mercury
of Waverly. Then in 1962, Harold started working for the
City of Waverly as a light plant operator. He retired in
1976 but worked part-time for the First National Bank of
Waverly until 1980. Harold and Margaret became residents
of the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville in the fall
of 1999 and Margeret died on August 3, 2002. Harold was
a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly. He
was a former board member for the Mitchell Manor Senior
Citizens Center. Harold is survived by his eleven
children and their spouses, Robert & Joan Campbell of
Santa Clara, California, Donald & Darlene Campbell of
Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Marjorie & Jerry Nissen of Cedar
Falls, Iowa, James Campbell of Cedar Falls, Iowa,
Lawrence Campbell of Des Moines, Iowa, Richard & Jean
Campbell of Waverly, Iowa, Paul & Debbie Campbell of
Waverly, Iowa, Eileen Vossen of St. Paul, Minnesota,
Dorothy & Scott Mulholland of Spring Valley, Minnesota,
Patricia & Daniel Schmidt of Clarksville, Iowa, and
Anthony Campbell of Waverly, Iowa; nineteen
grandchildren; nine great grandchildren. Harold was
preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret;

06/09/03 Janet Petersen of Ackley, Iowa passed away Saturday, May 31, 2003 at
her home. Janet was 52 years old. Janet was born
Janet Page on July 3, 1950 in Waverly, Iowa the
daughter of Norman and Monica (Boston) Page. She
attended Clarksville Elementary School and graduated
from the Iowa Falls High School in 1968. She was a
member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Ackley
Saddle Club, and the American Quarter Horse
Association. She had been employed by First Miss and
Farmers Coop in Bradford and most recently Gruenberg
Oil Company of Ackley. She especially enjoyed her
grandchildren along with her horses, camping, and
many friends. Survivors include her husband, Wayne
Meyer, her daughter Michelle Campbell and her
husband John and children, Dylan and Levi of Oro
Valley, Ariona, her daughter Page of Fort Dodge,
Iowa; her parents Norman and Monica Page of Iowa
Falls, Iowa; sister Linda Bowman and husband Doug
and children, Katie and Benjamin; her mother-in-law,
Mrs. Lawrence Meyer of Aplington, Iowa; four
sister-in-laws; one brother-in-law and their
families. She was preceded in death by her brother,
Steven Page in 2000 and father-in-law, Lawrence
Meyer. Memorial Mass Service will take place on
Saturday, June 7th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s

06/09/03 Mary Jean Armstead, 64, of Independence, Iowa died Friday evening May
23, 2003 at the home of her son in Greenfield,
Iowa, of a sudden illness. Mary Jean was born on
June 23, 1938 near Clarksville, Iowa the
daughter of William O. and Elsie I. (Nordman)
Kelm. She was a 1956 graduate of the Greene High
School and was united in marriage to Edwin E.
Armstead on May 15, 1958 in Sioux Falls, South
Dakota. The couple resided in Independence since
1963, and Mary Jean was employed as a
receptionist with Dr. L. John Flage, MD for 14
years prior to her retirement. She was a member
of the First United Methodist Church, the
Eastern Star, and the White Shrine of Jerusalem.
Survivors include her husband, Ed Armstead of
Independence; a daughter, Barbara Miller,
Lawrence, Kansas; five sons Robert, William,
Berton, and Brian Armstead all of Independence
and Duane Armstead of Greenfield, Iowa; her
mother, Elsie Kelm, of Clarksville; three
brothers: Fred, Robert, and Darrell Kelm all of
Clarksville; and two sisters, Betty McBeath of
Radcliff, Kentucky, and Doris Dralle of
Clarksville; eighteen grandchildren, and six
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death
by her father William O. Kelm, a brother Gary
Kelm, and a daughter-in-law Tammy Armstead.

06/09/03 Gary L. Sill, age 62, of Aplington,
Iowa, was born the son of Keith and
Grace Jackson Sill on April 11, 1941, in
Milo in Warren County, Iowa. He attended
the Methodist Church in Milo. He
received his education and graduated
from Aplington High School in 1959. Gary
was united in marriage with Phyllis
Birley on September 14, 1963, at Bethel
Reformed Church, Aplington, Iowa. The
couple lived in the Aplington area for
most of their lives. Gary was a member
of the Carpenter’s Union, Local 1835 for
40 years. Gary and Phyllis established
the Dairy Sweet in Aplington and
operated the restaurant for seven years.
He did seasonal work at the elevator
during the spring. He recently worked as
a motor route driver for the Waterloo
Courier and farmed 80 acres north of
Aplington until his death. Gary was a
reserve police officer for several
years. In 1970, he was a charter member
of the Aplington Jaycees. In early
years, he had served on the Aplington
Ambulance crew. Some of Gary’s hobbies
and interests over the years were
playing in the Men’s Thursday Night
Basketball League in Aplington, spending
time working on tractors and taking his
dogs along when he went coon hunting
with family and friends. Gary enjoyed
visiting with friends at Marion’s Café.
He was a loving husband, father and
grandfather who took pleasure in
spending time with his family and
friends. Gary died Wednesday, May 28,
2003 at Allen Memorial Hospital in
Waterloo, Iowa, of complications of
cancer. He was preceded in death by his
parents, Keith and Grace Sill. He is
survived by his wife, Phyllis of
Aplington, Iowa; his son, Curtis (Amy)
Sill of Kesley, Iowa; three
grandchildren, Morgan, Jared and Kyla
Sill; two sisters, Joan (Dennis)
Johnson, Waverly, Iowa and Elizabeth
(Duane) Palcic, Aplington, Iowa..

06/09/03 Elaine Agnes Christiansen, age
89, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born
the daughter of Albert and Mathilda
(Nelson) Severson on March 8, 1914,
in West Bend, Iowa. She received her
education and graduated from the
Conde High School in South Dakota
and continued her education at a
Business College. On January 18,
1948, Elaine Severson was united in
marriage with Clarence Christiansen
in Waterville, Minnesota. They made
their home and lived in Parkersburg,
where Elaine was a loving wife and
mother. When her daughter, Ardis was
younger, she enjoyed being a Brownie
Leader. Elaine was a member of the
Faith Lutheran Church in
Parkersburg. She played the organ at
church for over 50 years and was
very active in the Ladies Circle. In
1999 Elaine became a resident of the
Western Home in Cedar Falls, where
she was currently a member with the
Tone Chime Choir. Music has always
been an important and joyful part of
her life. On Mondays she could be
found playing 500 with her friends,
which she always enjoyed. She
especially loved and enjoyed
spending time with her grandchildren
and great granddaughter. On Sunday,
May 25, 2003, Elaine died at the
Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar
Falls, Iowa, of natural causes. She
was preceded in death by her
husband, Clarence Christiansen in
1998; her parents; one brother,
Francis Severson; and one sister,
Mildred Miner. Elaine is survived by
one daughter, Ardis (Sam) Woods of
Owatonna, Minnesota; two
grandchildren, Nick Woods and
Jennifer Woods; one great
granddaughter, Madelyn Woods; one
sister, Helen (Bob) Ripple of Rapid
City, South Dakota; one brother,
Eugene (Rosemary) Severson of
Portland, Oregon; and two
sisters-in-law, Elaine Severson of
Woodbury, Minnesota and Lucille
Lewis of Chicago, Illinois. Funeral
Services were held at 10:30 a.m.,
Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Faith
Lutheran Church, Parkersburg, Iowa
with Rev. Daniel J. Larson and
Chaplin Mark Eggleston from Cedar
Falls Western Home officiating.
Organist was Bernita Nicklaus and
vocalist Dale Boelman sang “How
Great Thou Art.” Congregational
Hymns were “Behold a Host Arrayed In
White” and “Abide With Me.”
Casketbearers were Bill Lipke,
Clifford Thorne, Ed Rewerts, Walt
Johnson and Dallas Schrage.
Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery,
Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz

06/09/03 Ruth E. Feuring, 82, of Dumont, Iowa passed away May 29, 2003 at the
Franklin General Hospital in
Hampton, Iowa. She was born on
June 29, 1920 in Athens Township
in Ringgold County, Iowa to
Dewey and Leone (Munyon) Ross.
She attended Ringgold Country
Schools. On January 26, 1939 she
was married in Bethany, Missouri
to Warren Feuring. Ruth was a
homemaker and she also helped
Warren on the farm. Ruth was a
member of the New Hope United
Methodist Church in Dumont. She
enjoyed crocheting, reading her
Bible and growing her plants.
She especially loved to
entertain her family. Ruth is
survived by her three daughters:

Neuhaus of Branson, Missouri and

of Coulter, Iowa; son-in-law Bob

Dumont, Iowa passed away May
21, 2003 at the Franklin
General Hospital in Hampton,
Iowa. Albert was born on
August 15, 1922 in Dumont,
Iowa to Henry and Kate (Buseman)
Dohlman. He attended school
in Kesley, Iowa. Albert
married Deona Meinders on
March 27, 1947 in Dumont,
Iowa. He worked as a farmer
and also helped his son at
Dave’s in Dumont. Albert was
a member of the Dumont
Reformed Church in Dumont.
He served his country in the
Air Force during World War
II and was a member of the
93rd Squadron, he was also a
member of the Kesley Amvets
and the Dumont American
Legion. Albert enjoyed
playing cards and gardening.
Years ago Albert was
president of the Kesley
Creamery for 22 years. He is
survived by his wife Deona

arrangements. Victor H. Muhlenbruch, 78, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away May 24, 2003 at
the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus in Mason City, Iowa.
Victor was born on June 25, 1924 in Hampton, Iowa to Herman and
Clara (Spangenberg) Muhlenbruch. He attended Franklin County
Schools. Victor was married to Donna Lee Day on March 14, 1952 in
Hampton, Iowa. He served his country in World War II in the U.S.
Army. Victor was first self-employed as an electrician and then went
to work for Co-op Oil in Dumont. He was a member of the Dumont
Reformed Church and a member of the Dumont American Legion. Victor
enjoyed his model A car, woodworking and fishing. He is survived by
three daughters: Debra Wangsness and fiancé Jim Lines of Allison,
Iowa, Dee Ann and husband Alan Meyer of Dumont, Iowa, and Denise
Petersen of Mason City, Iowa; a son: Doug Muhlenbruch of Long Beach,
California; grandchildren: Tracy Kruse, David Wangsness, Travis
Wangsness, Kiley Shear, Brett Meyer and Whitney Meyer; great
grandchildren: Nolan Kruse and Michaela Shear; five sisters: Leona
Menage of Sibley, Iowa, Irene Day of Dumont, Iowa, Lucille Jans of
Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Gladys Muhlenbruch of Hampton, Iowa, and
Arnelda Knipfel of Iowa Falls, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his
parents, wife, and one brother Lawrence. Funeral services were held
at the Dumont Reformed Church in Dumont at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday,
May 28, 2003 with Rev. Bob Scholten officiating. Special music was
provided by organist, Jim Siebrands accom-panying soloist, Mrs.
Norman Brown. Pallbearers were Jim Lines, Dan Kruse, Brett Meyer,
Monty Shear, Travis Wangsness and David Wangsness. Final resting
place was in the Dumont Cemetery with full Military Rites provided
by the Dumont American Legion. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home was in

Viola Mae Wooldridge
Viola Mae Wooldridge, age 96, of Waterloo and formerly of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Jesse and Wilda Wheeler Coplen on July 10, 1906, in Austinville, Iowa. She attended school in the Austinville and Aplington. On April 5, 1933, Viola Mae Coplen was united in marriage with Donald E. Wooldridge in Allison, Iowa. She was always busy taking care of her family and home, and she still had time to help Don with the bookwork for his corn shelling business. Viola attended First Presbyterian Church in Aplington. She was very creative whether crocheting or sewing quilts or raising flower in her garden. She always enjoyed fishing especially with Don. Viola loved all of her family and the visit from her grandchildren and great grandchildren always brightened her day. Viola died on Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at her home in Waterloo from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald in 1982; two sons, Vylas of Aplington, Iowa and Darold of Venture, California; two grandsons, David and Darcy; one great-granddaughter, Bunny Lynn; one brother, Jesse Coplin and four sisters, Hazel Loomis, Dorothy Shugar, Mildred Schultz and Eva. Betty Ann Brunner was born November 4,1926 in Union Township, Floyd County, a daughter of Mike and Anna (Heinz) Brunner, and died Tuesday, June 10,2003, at North Iowa Mercy Hospital East Campus, Mason City. She received her education in the rural Union Township Schools and graduated from the Marble Rock High School in 1946. She was united in marriage to Warren Gene “Pete” Stanbrough on September 6, 1946 at the Catholic Rectory in Hampton. To this union were born three sons. Betty was employed by the Bristow Produce for several years and was a housekeeper for Darwin Newberry for fifteen years. Following their retirement, Betty and Pete enjoyed fishing, going to garage sales, and those two day road trips. She will be greatly missed by her three sons: Jim Stanbrough of Reinbeck, Merlyn Stanbrough of Allison, and Joey (Mary Lou) Stanbrough of Aredale; ten grandchildren: Ted, Gene, Zeb, Bryan, Beth (Nick), Danny, Rueben (Sally), Michael, Kathy, and Jimmy; three great-grandchildren: Kelsy, Kyle, and Paige; two sisters: Merna Teeple of Greene, Marie and her husband Roger Ackley of Chillicothe, IL, one brother Merlyn Brunner of Marble Rock. 06/16/03 Gladys I. Schmadeke, 92, formerly of Ridgeway Place, Waterloo, died of natural causes on Sunday, June 1, 2003. Gladys was born February 9, 1911, the daughter of Robert P. and Ada I. (Mead) Ritzman in rural Allison, Iowa. She sold Avon Cosmetics during the 1960’s. On July 19, 1928, she was united in marriage to William J. Schmadeke in Clarksville. He died March 13, 1984. She was a member of Waterloo First United Methodist Church. Gladys is survived by her daughter: Paula Glass, Waterloo, Iowa: sons: Donald (Jane) Schmadeke of Coon Rapids Minnesota, Robert Schmadeke of Urbandale, Iowa, and Gary (Mary Ann) Schmadeke of Casa Grande, Arizona. She has eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son: Richard, Granddaughter: Pamela Weider, two brothers: Jack and Glen Ritzman, and four sisters: Mabel Peppler, Marie Wendt, Velma Faye Bents, and Gail Ritzman. He served our country in the United States Army in Vietnam from 1964 to 1966. Darrell was married on September 2, 1995 at the St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Vilmar in rural Greene, Iowa to Karen (Chandler) Turnquist. He worked as a farmer and for M. R. Fishel Construction Company. Darrell was a member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Vilmar in rural Greene. He was baptized on September 19, 1943 and confirmed February 10, 1957. Darrell enjoyed his family, sports and the outdoors. He is survived by wife Karen Prange of Allison, step-son Phillip Turnquist of Allison, step-daughter Jennifer and husband Ryan Zolman and step-granddaughter Kayla of Oak Harbor, Washington, mother Velda Prange of Allison, and brother Dennis Prange of Cedar Falls.
