George J. Haan

George J. Haan, 88, of Kesley, Iowa passed away November 11, 2003 at the Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington, Iowa. George was born on May 31, 1915 in Butler County, Iowa to John and Margaret (Bohlen) Haan. George attended Parkersburg Country School. He was married to Francis Rewerts on August 29, 1940 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He worked as a butter maker at the Kesley Creamery, and was a member of the Kesley Presbyterian Church. George loved to go hunting and ice fishing. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandsons. George is survived by his wife Francis Haan of Aplington; son Russell Haan of Parkersburg; daughter Shirley and husband Gary Marks of Hampton; grandsons: Jason and Jeffrey Marks, both of Glenwood Springs Colorado; brother Andrew Haan of Clarksville and a sister Jeanette Birley of Aplington. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 17, 2003 at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont with Pastor Mike Brost officiating. Special music was provided by Ann Koenigsberg accompanying the duet of Mary Mollenbeck and Deb Hartkopp. Pallbearers were Jason Marks, Jeffrey Marks, Donny Cashatt, Rick Cashatt, Larry Birley and Leroy Ostendorf. Final resting place was in the Washington Reformed Church Cemetery, rural Ackley, Iowa. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont was in charge of arrangements.


John Lieuwen Stock

John Lieuwen Stock, 88, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away November 11, 2003 at the Hampton Care Center in Hampton, Iowa. He was born November 24, 1914, in Butler County, Iowa to William and Maggie (Lieuwen) Stock. John graduated from Dumont High School. He was married to Hilda May Eichmeier on November 24, 1938 in Aredale, Iowa. John was a life long farmer, and a member of New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont. He was head usher at the church for many years, director of the Dumont Telephone Company for over 40 years, and was on the Butler County Fair Board for over 30 years. He enjoyed camping and visiting. John was a member of Wig Wam Camping Club and enjoyed telling many stories about his life. He is survived by his wife Hilda May Stock of Dumont; daughter Ramona Melendy of Dumont; granddaughter Deidre Ann and husband Richard Easton of LaPorte City; granddaughter Bethany May Melendy of Dumont; great grandson Tristan Easton of LaPorte City and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, three sisters and a great grandson Ashton Easton. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 15, 2003 at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont with Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Beryl Reed accompanying the duet of Mrs. Norman Brown and Mrs. Don McWilliams. Ushers were Harold Reents and Harley Cuvelier. Pallbearers were Larry Adams, Jim Hanson, Mark Gerdes, Richard Dean, Don McWilliams and Larry Eichmeier. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Carrie Louise Paterni

Carrie Louise Paterni, age 79, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of Ubbe and Effie (Cordes) Marks on May 10, 1924, in Butler County, near New Hartford, Iowa. She received her education in a country school near her home. For a time, Carrie worked at Hinson Manufacturing in Waterloo, Iowa. On September 5, 1945, Carrie Marks was united in marriage with Richard Paterni at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Parkersburg. They made their home and farmed near Wellsburg, Iowa and later moved and farmed near Stout, Iowa. For many years Carrie worked at Polly’s Café in Parkersburg. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg and was active in Ruth’s Circle, a Women’s Group. She enjoyed making ceramics and crocheting afghans. While in the nursing home, she was asked to crochet baby blankets for many families. Carrie died at 12:45 p.m., Saturday, October 25, 2003, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Paterni on June 2, 1961; one daughter, Linda Paterni on October 16, 1993; and her parents. Carrie is survived by two sisters, Ann Tuitjer of Parkersburg, Iowa and Faye (Ted) Tuitjer of Parkersburg, Iowa; three sisters-in-law, Annie Paterni of Grundy Center, Iowa, Frieda Paterni of Wellsburg, Iowa and Ruth Paterni of Wellsburg, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 28, 2003, at Bethel Lutheran Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Paul Schaedig officiating. Organist was Linda Truax. Vocalist was Terry Mennen who sang “Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling” and “Safe in the Arms of Jesus.” Congregational Hymns were “Borning Cry” and”Amazing Grace.” Casketbearers were Kent Tuitjer, Stanley Paterni, Royce Paterni, Dale Van Hauen, Ryan Sicard and Royce Sicard. Interment was in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Parkersburg, Iowa. Flower Committee was Sharleen Hubbard and Vada Luhring. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Peter Timmer

Peter Timmer, 102, of Clarksville, Iowa passed away October 30. 2003 at the Waverly Municipal Hospital in Waverly, Iowa. Peter was born on September 10, 1901 in the Netherlands to Steffen and Francis (Van Der Laan) Timmer. He attended grade schools in Butler County. Peter was married to Josie Rieman on February 18, 1925 in Waverly, Iowa. Peter worked all his life as a farmer. He was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, Iowa. Peter enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing, farming, going to his granddaughter’s events, tending livestock and driving tractors. He is survived by his son Pete and wife Glenda Timmer of Allison, Iowa; granddaughter Randi and husband Rev. Kris Snyder of Hanlontown, Iowa; two sisters: Mattie Van Raden of Allison and Elsena and husband Pete Kramer of Clarksville. Peter was preceded in death by his parents, wife, six brothers George, George, Jake, Harm, John and Sander; three sisters: Tish Wilken, Anna Negan, Marie Rieman and one infant sister. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 3, 2003 at the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with Rev. Jerry Laehn and Associate in Ministry Peg Torrin. Special music was provided by organist, Vivian Green accomp-anying the duet of Glenda Timmer and Randi Snyder. Pallbearers were Gary Riles, Bennie Fank, Richard Ubben, Jon Rieman, Merlyn Rieman and Burdean Brockway. Final resting place was in the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Fonda Arenholz

Fonda Arenholz, age 74, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born October 10, 1929, the daughter of Fordyce and Dagmar Iverson Jones in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was a graduate of Cedar Falls High School. Fonda was united in marriage with Joe Arenholz on February 11, 1950, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The couple made their home in Clarksville where Fonda was the bookkeeper for the family construction business. Fonda was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where she served on the Church Council and she volunteered in coordinating the HVAAA Congregate Meals in Clarksville. She assisted Joe with the work on the Butler County Fair Board. Fonda served on the Clarksville Library Board for 18 years. Fonda enjoyed reading novels, doing puzzles and watching The Cubs. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Fonda died at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, on Friday, October 31, 2003, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Arenholz, and her parents. She is survived by one daughter, Sandy (Lon) Mulder, Clarksville, Iowa; three sons, Steve (Candace) Arenholz, Clarksville, Iowa; Scott (Jane) Arenholz, Clarksville, Iowa and Sonny (Brenda) Arenholz, Shell Rock, Iowa; and nine grandchildren, two great-granddaughters; one sister, Betty (Roy) Weikert, Cedar Falls, Iowa and two nephews. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 4, 2003, at St. John Lutheran Church, Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor David R. Nelson officiating. Organist was Lois Roose. Congregational Hymns were “Here I Am, Lord,” “Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art.” Casketbearers were her grandchildren, Tony DeZarn, Sara Arenholz, Jason DeZarn, Ryan Arenholz, Matt Arenholz, Julie Arenholz, Missy Ann Arenholz, Derek DeZarn and Tom Arenholz. Interment was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the family. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, was in charge of arrangements.


Carl Alter

Carl Alter, age 86, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Ernest and Flora (Kalkwarf) Alter on February 21, 1917, on the family farm in Grundy County near Parkersburg, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in the Salem Lutheran Church. Carl received his education from the Country Schoolhouse Beaver #4 in Grundy County. Carl was a WWII Veteran. He served in the United States Army as a bugler from February of 1942 thru November of 1945, and spent two years overseas in the Aleutian Islands. He returned home after the war and continued living and farming on the family farm. Carl took care of his elderly mother in later years until her death. Carl retired from farming in 1980 and moved to Parkersburg in 1984. Carl was a life-long member of Salem Lutheran Church and later a member of Bethel Lutheran Church. He served as the sexton of Salem Lutheran Cemetery for many years. Carl was an avid chess player. He loved reading, music and playing his trumpet. Carl also enjoyed bowling in the past. Carl died Saturday, November 1, 2003, at the Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington, Iowa, from natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Reinhard Alter. Carl is survived by one brother, Bernard (Hazel) Alter, Cedar Falls, Iowa; three sisters, Marie L. Madlom, Parkersburg, Iowa, Margaret (Lawrence) Aalfs, Parkersburg, Iowa, and Dorothy (Paul) Foster, Indianola, Iowa; two nieces and five nephews. Funeral Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 4, 2003, at Bethel Lutheran Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Paul Scheadig officiating. Organist was Janet Mennen. Soloist Terry Mennen sang “Day by Day.” Congregational Hymns were “Beneath the Cross of Jesus,” “My Faith Looks Up to Thee” and “How Great Thou Art.” Honorary Casketbearers were Mike Foster, Joel Alter, Claas Kampman, Tom Foster and Mike Warnock. Casketbearers were Lee Aalfs, Marvin Hook, Loren Aalfs, Lauris Frerichs, Bob Kolder and Bill Hammer. Interment was in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Etta Reysack

Etta Reysack, 86, of Dumont, Iowa passed away October 31, 2003 at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa. Etta was born on June 14, 1917 in Dumont, to Jens and Hilka (Miller) Folkerds. Etta attended Dumont Country Schools. She was married to George Reysack on November 11, 1936 in Dumont. Etta was a homemaker. She was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont. Etta loved to play bingo, cards and UNO. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She is survived by three daughters: Alice Campbell of Dumont, Hilda and husband Steve Metz of Hampton, and Tillene and husband Bill DeBoer of Allison; six sons: George Reysack Jr. of Dumont, James and wife LaVonne Reysack of Charles City, Johnny and wife Geneva Reysack of Coulter, Leroy and wife Cindy Reysack of Bristow, Jans and wife Cindy Reysack of Dumont, and Emmo Reysack of Dumont; twenty-six grandchildren: and thirty-eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband George, son-in-law Bill Campbell, grandchildren: Becky Campbell, Todd Metz, Tracy Metz and Cory Reysack. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 4, 2003 at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont with Rev. Robert Conner officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Jean Reed accompanying soloist, Ruth Tapp. Ushers were Harold Reents and Harley Cuvelier. Pallbearers were Jack Reysack, Carl DeBoer, Ralph Arenholz, Robert Hayner, Kendall Luchten-berg, and Leon Gemaehlick. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Dorothy B. Schwab

Dorothy B. Schwab, 90, of Shell Rock, Iowa died Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at the Waverly Municipal Hospital of natural causes. Dorothy was born on January 24, 1913, the daughter of Louie J. and Pearl R. (Miller) Miller in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on September 7, 1913. Dorothy graduated from Janesville High school. On June 30, 1934, she was united in marriage to Adam Schwab in Cedar Falls. The couple moved to a farm near Janesville and in 1942, they moved to a farm southeast of Shell Rock. Dorothy worked in food service at UNI for several years. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock, Know Your Neighbor Club and the Cedar Valley African Violet Association. Dorothy enjoyed raising violets and orchids, working in her green house and gardening. She is survived by her children, Larry Schwab and his wife, Alice of Allison, Gloria DeGroote and her husband, James of Shell Rock and Allen Schwab and his wife, Dorothy A. of Shell Rock; 14 grandchildren, Kevin Schwab, Rodney Schwab, Janell Slight, Marty Schwab, David Schwab, Dale Schwab, Deanne Martzahn, Barb DeGroote, Clint DeGroote, Darrell DeGroote, Eric DeGroote, Katie Schwab, Matt Schwab and Tanner Schwab; 16 great grandchildren; sister, Della Howe of Janesville and a brother, Don Miller and his wife, Sally of Janesville. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Adam on February 19, 1975; two sons, Darrell and Richard Schwab; and a grandson, Brian. Funeral services were held on Monday, November 3, 2003 at 10:00 am at Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock with Pastor Steven D. McGinley officiating. Burial was in the Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Cedar Falls.


Mary E. Bliss

Funeral services for Mary E. Bliss,73, of 12784 Ivy Avenue, Greene, were held Thursday, October 30, 2003, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Flag Presentation conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene, Iowa. Reid¹s Funeral Chapel of Greene in charge of arrangements. Mary Ellen d’Happart was born October 10, 1929, in Villisca, Montgomery County, Iowa, a daughter of Arthur d’Happart and Opal Pauline Sheppard d’Happart Bisterfelt, and died Monday, October 27, 2003, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton. She received her education at the College Hill High School in Cedar Falls. She entered the United States Air Force on August 16, 1949. While she was in the Air Force she was married to Arthur Barnes and to this union was born a daughter named Pamela Lee. Following her discharge on August 24, 1950, she returned home and worked at Rath Packing Plant as a secretary. She also worked at the telephone company in Kansas City. On March 10,1956, she was united in marriage to Bernard Nicklaus in Parkersburg. To this union were born Lynn Etta, Bernard Lawrence Jr. and Debra Sue. On June 19, 1981, she was married to Donald E. Bliss at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home ar 1261 East 18th Street in Des Moines, where she was employed by Kelly Services. They moved to their home in rural Greene in 1998. Mary enjoyed cooking, canning, crafts, bowling, gardening, polka dancing, and Blue Grass Festivals. Mary was a member of the Polka Club of Iowa and the Society for the Preservation of Blue Grass Music. She was baptized June 21, 1931, at the Methodist Church in Villisca. She was a faithful member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg where she taught Sunday School, and was active in her church circle and studied the Bethel Series. After moving to Greene Don and Mary were faithful members of St. Peter Lutheran Church. She will be sadly missed by her loving husband Donald E. Bliss of Greene; daughter: Pamela Lee (Dick) Kirkpatrick and their son Matthew of Waterloo; daughter: Lynn Etta (Steve) Gleason and their children: Trista and Kyle of Waterloo; son: Bernard Lawrence Nicklaus of Clear Lake and his children: Shawn, Rachael, Michael, and Justin of Shell Rock; daughter; Debra Sue (Fred) Taylor and their children: Jennifer, Melanie, Leslie, Crystal, Troy, Craig, Adam, and Eric, all of Thorton; stepson: Marvin (DeAnna) Bliss and their children, Jeremiah, John, and Chelsea of Janesville; seven great-grandchildren: Madison and Kelli Johnston; Tanner and Grace Shreckengost, Miranda and Tjaden Johnson, and Justin Vega; four brothers: Clarence “Bud” (Carol) d’Happart of Houston, TX, Larry (Pat) Bisterfelt of Jim Bean, TX, John Bisterfelt of Van Alstyne, TX; Floyd (Ann) Bisterfelt of Honolulu, Hl; two sisters: Shirley Mae (Dave) Smith of Ely, NV, and Laura Rose (Marlyn) Nicklaus of Parkersburg, and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving include special friends: Pete and Marilyn Peterson of Waterloo and Marvin Wente of Toledo. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her step father Lawrence Bisterfelt. Gladys Lucille Cook

Gladys Lucille Cook, 78, of Allison, Iowa, died on Thursday, October 30, 2003, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. Gladys was born on September 19, 1925, in Janesville, Iowa, the daughter of Merrill and Muriel (Ward) Mosher. After her mother was remarried due to her father’s death, she was the daughter of Odus and Muriel Bergman. On September 12, 1943, she was united in marriage to Harold Cook in Waverly Junction, Iowa. The couple have lived in the Cedar Falls, Waverly, Clarksville, and Allison areas throughout their marriage. Gladys was hired to work as a nursing assistant at the Waverly Hospital in 1941. She later went to work at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Gladys is survived by her husband, Harold, of Allison, Iowa; two grandchildren, Jeff Heine of Plano, Texas, and Tammy Grantham and Chad Miller of Allison, Iowa; two great grandchildren, Brianna and Jeremy of Allison, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathy Heine; one sister, Beverly; and twin sisters in infancy. Graveside services were held on Sunday, November 2, 2003 at Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock, with Pastor Allen Poore-Christiansen officiating. Memorials may be directed to the family. Margaret Tack

Margaret Tack, age 94, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Jacob and Anna (Garrels) Sluiter on February 16, 1909, Emdem, Germany. She migrated with her family as a small child to the United States. She received her education from a country school near Allison, Iowa. On December 25, 1934, Margaret Sluiter was united in marriage with Harvey Tack in Kansas City, Missouri. They made their home and farmed near Ackley, Iowa. They later moved and farmed north of Aplington until 1970, when they retired and moved to Aplington. Margaret accepted Christ as her personal Savior on Oct 18, 1929, and received her assurance through Job 19:25 “I know my Redeemer liveth.” and hugged her Bible and ran upstairs. She enjoyed being in fellowship with the Christians at the Hitesville Gospel Hall, where she enjoyed serving the Lord. Margaret enjoyed embroidery, gardening, flowers, cooking and baking. Margaret died Saturday, October 25, 2003, at the Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Tack on May 22, 1992; her parents; one sister, Anna Spieker; and three brothers, Adolph, Henry and Grant Sluiter. Margaret is survived by one brother, Warner (Elizabeth) Sluiter of Parkersburg, Iowa; two sisters, Bena Walters of Allison, Iowa and Fannie Leerhoff of Parkersburg, Iowa; two brothers-in-law, Melvin Tack of Grundy Center, Iowa and Kenneth (Beulah) Tack of Wellsburg, Iowa; and one sister-in-law, LaVerne Tack of Wellsburg, Iowa. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 28, 2003, at Hitesville Gospel Hall, rural Aplington, Iowa, with Mr. Robert Orr and Mr. Robert Orr officiating. Congregational Hymns were “Blessed Assurance,” “What Will It Be To Dwell Above” and “Safe In The Arms Of Jesus.” Ushers were Dallas Kluiter and LaVern Kluiter. Casketbearers were Royce Tack, Burdeen Sluiter, Boyd Meyer, Jake Walters, Kendall Tack, and Randall Sluiter. Flower Committee was Betty Williams and Lois Asche. Interment was in Hitesville Cemetery, rural Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Darlene Rowan

Darlene Rowan, age 70, of Aplington, Iowa, was born July 7, 1933, the daughter of Bert and Tena Rotgers Noble in Ackley, Iowa. She graduated from Ackley High School in 1951. Darlene was employed at S&S Groceries for five years. She was formerly employed at the Presbyterian Village in housekeeping until she retired due to failing health. She was an active fan of Aplington-Parkersburg sports and had enjoyed golfing in her younger years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Aplington. Darlene died Monday, November 17, 2003 at Presbyterian Village, Ackley, Iowa of Pulmonary Fibrosis. She was preceded in death by one son, Marlin Johns and her parents, Bert and Tena. She is survived by one son Patrick Rowan, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two daughters, Denice (Larry) Jelinek, Evansdale, Iowa and Patricia Johns, Ely, Iowa; five grandchildren; three brothers, Gene (Edyie) Noble, Evansdale, Iowa; Don (Darla) Noble, Aplington, Iowa and Gary (Linda) Noble, Aplington, Iowa; and a special friend, Arlene Meyer, Aplington, Iowa. Funeral Services were held 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 19, 2003, at the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington, Iowa, with Rev. Greg Smith and Rev. Harlan DeJong officiating. The organist was Lenee’ Pollock and the congregational hymns where “Amazing Grace,” “Sweet By and By” and “Safe In The Arms of Jesus.” The Casketbearers where Brad Noble, Jeff Noble, Rick Noble, Lance Noble, Brian Noble, and Scott Sandell. Burial was in the Oak Wood Cemetery in Ackley, Iowa. Memorial way be directed to the family of Darlene Rowan. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington was in charge of arrangements.


Kerry Jo Maitland

Kerry Jo Maitland, age 57, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of Keith W. and Bernice (McMaster) Johnson on April 6, 1946, in Cresco, Iowa. She received her education from the Lime Springs and Crestwood Schools. On December 14, 1962, Kerry Johnson was united in marriage with John Maitland at her parent’s home in Lime Springs. They made their home in Lime Springs. Kerry worked as a Teachers Aid and she also enjoyed teaching piano for many years. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lime Springs and served as a Sunday School Superintendent. Through the years while her boys were young, she was a Cub Scout Den Mother. In 1983 they moved to Parkersburg. Kerry was a member of the Parkersburg United Methodist Church and was active in Bible Study and the Mission Committee. She enjoyed many camping trips with her family they would take, especially to Clear Lake, Iowa. She also had a lot of fun attending and watching stock car races on TV. Kerry died on Tuesday, November 18, 2003, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa, of complications of Multiple Sclerosis. She was preceded in death by her father, Keith Johnson and her grandparents, Earl & Flosie McMaster and Bertiss & Laura Johnson. Kerry is survived by her husband, John Maitland of Parkersburg, IA; five children, Mark (Marjorie) Maitland of Rochester, MN, Jean (Darrin) Smith of Stewartville, MN, John (Tammy) Maitland Jr. of Waterloo, IA, Brent Maitland of Parkersburg and Aaron (Noriko) Maitland of Glidden, IA; 12 grandchildren, Nicole and Danielle Maitland, Brianna, Ashlyn and Carissa Smith, Ryan, Allison and Brandon Maitland, and Kyle, Grace, Hunter and Jack Maitland; her mother, Bernice Johnson of Lime Springs, IA; two brothers, Thomas (Barb) Johnson of Swaledale, IA and David Johnson of Lime Springs, IA. Funeral Services where held 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 21, 2003Parkersburg United Methodist ChurchParkersburg, Iowa, with Pastor Betsy Piette officiating. The organist was Sheila Groeneveld and Tom Teeple sang “How Great Thou Art”. The congregational hymns where “Hymn of Praise,” “He Leadeth Me Oh Blessed Thought” and “On Eagles Wings.” The Casketbearers were Earl Walker, Dennis Rice, Jim Wee, Ronnie DeBoer, Darrell Johnson, Darwin Kampman and Terry Grant. Burial was held at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs, Iowa. Memorials maybe directed to the Family of Kerry. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements.


Destiny Izabel Hernandez

Destiny Izabel Hernandez, age 1, of Dumont, Iowa died on November 17, 2003 at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus, Mason City, IA of natural causes. On April 24, 2002, Destiny was born to Maria Hernandez in Mason City, IA. Their church connection was St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Destiny enjoyed playing with her cousins, enjoyed horses, cats, dogs and watching Dora the Explorer and watching television with her grandpa. Survivors include her mother Maria Hernandez of Dumont; grandparents Enrique and Maria Hernandez; two aunts: Mercedes and husband Roy Alden and Maria R. Hernandez, all of Dumont; Uncle Carlos Hernandez of Dumont and cousin Jealousy Alden of Dumont. She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 20 at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont with burial in the Dumont Cemetery. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Marlys Annette Schrage

Marlys Annette Schrage, age 72, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of Jerry and Anna Sluiter Spieker on January 13, 1931, in rural Butler County, near Aplington, Iowa. She graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1949. On September 6, 1949, Marlys was united in marriage to Harold at the Harvey Tack residence, rural Aplington, Iowa. The couple made their home on their farm near Parkersburg where Marlys was a homemaker and farm helpmate. She was known for her hospitality and fine cooking. Marlys was in fellowship with Christians at the Hitesville Gospel Hall. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior on August 29, 1947, through 1 Peter 2:24. Marlys died Tuesday, November 18, 2003, at the Allison Health Care Center due to complications of cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Schrage on August 13, 1998, and her parents, Jerry and Anna Spieker. Marlys is survived by five children; Marcia (Ray) Barrett, Liberty, Missouri; Marilyn (Milt) Ulfers, Allison, Iowa; Marjorie (Don) Harbaugh, Cedar Falls, Iowa; Marie (Duane) DeGroote, Parkersburg, Iowa; Craig (Nancy) Schrage, Parkersburg, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Amanda (Robert) Kramer, LasVegas, Nevada; two brothers-in-law, Lawrence (Henrietta) Schrage, Parkersburg, Iowa; Orville (Joann) Schrage, Vinton, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Leona Walbaum, Parkersburg, Iowa and Berdene Schrage, Parkersburg, Iowa. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 20, 2003 at Hitesville Gospel Hall, rural Aplington, Iowa. Speakers were Allen Christopherson and Robert Orr. Congregational Hymns were “Safe In The Arms of Jesus,” “A Glorious Morrow” and “God Be With You.” Ushers were Earl DeVries, Dallas Kluiter, Tom Christopherson and Larry Asche. Casketbearers were Rhett Barrett, Landon Schrage, Scott Barrett, Taylor Schrage, Ethan Ulfers, Rick DeGroote, Travis Harbaugh, and Thad Harbaugh. Flower Committee was Dean and Elaine Wessels, Joe and Freda Wallbaum, Tom and Barb Christopherson and Earl and Mag DeVries. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Betty Joan Jones

Betty Joan Jones, age 71, of Aplington, Iowa, was born August 25, 1932, the daughter of John B. and Martha Hemmen Hook in Butler County, Iowa, near Aplington. She received her education in a rural school near her home. Betty was united in marriage with Harold E. Jones on May 12, 1953, in Dumont, Iowa. The couple lived a few years in Hampton, then moved to California where they lived for seven years. They moved back to Iowa and made their home in Parkersburg, Cedar Falls, Waterloo and then in Aplington. Betty was employed as a nurse’s aid in the Franklin General Hospital, the Grundy Center Hospital and at Sartori Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed keeping house and helping Harold. She liked to help make sure the family functions ran smoothly. Betty died at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa, on Saturday, November 22, 2003, from head injuries received in a fall at her home in Aplington on Thursday evening. She was preceded in death by her parents. Betty is survived by her husband, Harold E. Jones of Aplington, Iowa; one son, Steven (Eileen) Jones, Newburgh, New York; two grandchildren, Josh (Jenn) Jones, Waterloo, Iowa and Jim (Jodi) Jones, LaCrescent, Minnesota; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ron (Rochelle) Hook, Sibley, Iowa; Marvin (Joann) Hook, Parkersburg, Iowa; and one sister, Shirley (Paul) Brown, Denver, Colorado; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Carrigger of Texas and Dorothy Parks, Alexander, Iowa; two brothers-in-law, Dale (Cam) Jones, Salinas, California, and Chuck (Lorraine) Jones, Hampton, Iowa and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 25, 2003, at First Reformed Church, Aplington, Iowa with Pastor Harlan DeJong officiating. Organist was Lois Wessels. Congregational Hymns were “Standing On The Promises,” “Amazing Grace,” “Blessed Assurance” and “In The Garden.” Honorary Casketbearer was Sherman Frey. Casketbearers were Marvin Hook, Ben Meinders, Ben Hook, Shirley Brown, Darwin Hook and Alvin “Red” Dreesman. Flower Committee was Lucy Miller and Jolene Dreesman. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements.
